Laura (00:02):
hello and welcome to money and career mastery from
overwhelmed to ownership.
I'm Laura Sexton, your abundanceand legacy coach here to help
you navigate the world of money, debt payoff, and career growth
with confidence and clarity.
In this podcast, we'll tacklethe financial and career
challenges, holding you back, optimize your income and build

(00:22):
the freedom that comes with trueownership.
If you're ready to break freefrom overwhelm, create a budget
that aligns with your values anddesign a legacy that empowers
future generations.
You're in the right place.
I make too much money to be thisbroke.
Hey, accelerators, welcome backto the podcast.

(00:44):
Today we are going to be talkingabout that statement and what it
means to me and what it means toa lot of the people that I work
with.
You see, I make too much moneyto be this broke is something
that I hear all the time, butit's not a failure.
It's a turning point.
I want you to know that ifyou've ever felt this way, I

(01:06):
have too.
And I've talked to people allthe time that tell me the same
thing.
I make too much money to be Thisbroke this week.
I talked to Paul and Ina, he's asurgeon, she's a lawyer.
What they said to me was theyhave nothing to show for it.
All that hard work, those extrayears of college and education

(01:26):
and residency and trial practiceand all of the work that they
have put in and they said theyhave nothing to show for it.
Sure.
They look like they're doingwell.
They've got the fancy cars andthe nice house and they wear all
of the nice clothes, but theirnet worth is still negative.

(01:48):
They feel like they work so hardto barely get by.
It's terrible, but I knowexactly how they feel.
Before we started this journeyin 2016, my husband was making a
really solid income.
I was able to come home fromwork.
I could take some time off, butthe payments, they were piling

(02:10):
up.
And I had my head in the sand.
I wasn't paying any attention toit.
Bill came in, I wrote the check,he got out to eat.
No big deal.
We didn't have the money in theaccount today so we could put it
on a credit card.
We were normal and normal sucks.
I didn't know that I was broke.

(02:31):
I didn't feel the pressure ofit.
But eventually all of theobligations made it impossible
for me to get ahead.
And then I realized what we wereactually facing,$372,347 of past
decisions that were coming homeand demanding to be paid for.

(02:54):
It is really easy to outrun yourfinancial mistakes for a while,
but eventually they will catchup to you.
They catch up to all of us.
A high income doesn't alwaysmean high confidence.
I work with too many high incomeindividuals to ever believe that
they could be associated, but Iknow how to fix the gap.

(03:17):
Your income can create a falsesense of security that hides
deeper, deeper financial habits.
I have a couple that I work withthat make over$20,000 a month.
You may hear that and be like,I'm sorry, what?
I make that every six months howthey make$20,000 a month and
they spend$22,000 a month.

(03:39):
That's how they're not gettingahead, and you see that is
finally caught up with them andthey had to actually consider
bankruptcy.
Can you imagine having that highof an income and have to
consider filing bankruptcy?
Your confidence doesn't comefrom the money that comes in.
Your confidence comes fromclarity.
It's not about how much youmake, it's how you manage what

(04:01):
you make.
When I talked to Paul and Inathis week, I gave them one
really blunt truth, and I wannagive this to you as well.
Coming from a former ostrich me,I used to have my head in the
sand.
I wasn't paying attention.
I looked at Paul and Nina and Itold them that they had a
decision to make.
They could either keeppretending that they were okay

(04:26):
and continue to feeloverwhelmed, or they could face
the numbers, own their story, and choose a new direction.
They couldn't put their headback in the sand.
There's no red pill, blue pillsituation here.
There's no option.
Now that you were staring itdown and looking at the truth,
you don't get to decide youdon't wanna see it anymore.

(04:46):
I've painted this picture foryou.
It's bright, vibrant colorsright in front of your face.
You are going to sufferlong-term because you are not
paying attention to your money.
Or you can choose today to makea change, but you can never go
back to not realizing.
You have to make the choice.

(05:08):
It's completely up to you, butyou can't pretend like you don't
know what your options are.
Ownership.
Ownership of the situation.
That is the antidote tooverwhelm.
I know what it feels like to beoverwhelmed.
I know what it feels like to bedrowning, and it was not after I
finished paying off nearly$400,000 of debt, that I became

(05:33):
calm.
That money began feeling easy.
It was the day that I decided.
I was no longer going to letlife happen to me, but I was
instead going to happen to life.
When I took ownership of mysituation.
The day that my husband saidthat we were going to have to

(05:56):
talk about filing bankruptcy, itnever got past that.
It never got past him saying, well, we need to look at this.
We never looked up what itlooked like to file.
We never called a bankruptcyattorney because we decided that
day that we were in charge ofour future and that we were
going to make a change.

(06:17):
That is the day that I changedmy life, not the day that we
finished.
Not the day we crossed thefinish line.
No, no, no.
The day we decided that we weregoing to run the race, that's
the day I won.
And I want this to be the sameday for you too.
When you stop blaming the math, you stop blaming the market.
You stop blaming the moment thatyou're in.

(06:40):
That's when you gain the powerto shift everything.
It's a hundred percent in yourcontrol.
You just have to take ownershipof it.
There's one truth that I want totalk about quickly, money story.
Now, you may be asking aboutwhat a money story is.
In simple terms, it's the storywe tell ourselves about money,

(07:00):
but in more complex terms.
It's what we learned about moneygrowing up.
It's how we've handled moneyover a period of years.
A lot of times people come to meand inside their money story,
there's a lot of shame andguilt.
Shame is going to keep youstuck.
So I want you to look at yourmoney story and we need to get

(07:21):
clear on what is actuallyhappening because clarity is
going to set you free.
When people feel shame about asituation, I like to take a step
back and look at that situation.
What is the actual circumstanceand what are your thoughts about
that circumstance?
Because the circumstance, wecan't change anything about what
has happened in the past, butyour thoughts about that are

(07:42):
going to cause your feelings.
That's where the shame comes in.
So I need to change yourthoughts around the
circumstance.
That's where we're gonna getclear what actually happened,
what was our actual role inthis, and once we gain that
clarity, we can also receivefreedom from that.
Shame.
You are not broken.
If you're listening to thistoday and you're hearing.

(08:06):
I make too much to be thisbroke.
I have nothing to show for it.
And there's this negativeconnotation how you feel about
your money.
You are not broken.
You're normal, but normal sucks.
So let's find something that wecan do better.
Let's find a better system foryou.
Let's find better support.
So I wanna ask you to take alook and reflect on your money

(08:27):
story by asking yourself thesethree questions.
First, what are you avoidinglooking at when it comes to your
money?
What would it feel like to be incontrol again of your money?
And what does thriving look liketo you?
Not just surviving, butthriving?
What does that look like?
When we get clear on thesethings, we'll be able to better

(08:49):
implement a system.
But when it comes to thesupport, the support that you
need, if you feel like you'renot getting it from the people
around you, I want you to joinme in my Money Mastery program.

attention and allow yourself tocontinue to stay in the
overwhelm, or you can face yournumbers, own your story, and

(09:33):
The choice is completely up toyou, but as of right this
moment.
You have to make a choice, andby not making a choice, you are
choosing to put your head backin the sand.
You are making a choice.
So which one do you want to takeownership of?
Whichever one you choose.
