Speaker 0 (00:00):
What if I told you your next big breakthrough could
happen in just five seconds?
Sounds too simple, right?
But sometimes that's exactlywhat we need.
Today, I'm going to be divinginto Mel Robbins, top
motivational speaker across theworld, and I'm going to be
talking about her five-secondrule, the simple yet powerful
tool that has helped millions ofpeople break through
procrastination and fear, andwe're going to be talking about
how you could use it to level upyour personal life, business

(00:21):
life, professional life, whatever it is all around.
If you're new here, welcome tothe More Than a Side Hustle
podcast.
My name is Anthony Hartzog.
I am a seven-figureentrepreneur who has been able
to build these businessesoutside of his nine-to-five job,
and now we help other people dothe same.
We've coached thousands ofentrepreneurs, and our goal is
to show you that it's not onlyjust for successful people.
Everyday people can buildbusinesses outside of their jobs

(00:43):
.
So, whether you're juststarting a side hustle, looking
to scale, make sure you continueto tune in.
What exactly is the five secondrule?
So, essentially, it's aboutdoing something with
uninterrupted hesitation, according to Mel Robbins, so
whenever you feel the urge to dosomething.
So, whether it's waking upearly, talking to your boss,
having to make that phone call.
You count backwards from fiveand then you take action.

(01:05):
Now why do you do that?
The purpose of it is because itforces us out of the everyday
autopilot of our lives and itkind of puts you in that fight
or flight mindset, right.
So you do this before yourbrain can actually talk you out
of it.
One of your brain's primaryfunctions is to help you out of
feeling discomfort.
Essentially, we're wired toprotect ourselves from being
uncomfortable.
So with the five second ruleactually removes all discomfort

(01:27):
from that feeling.
So let me give you an examplewith that.
So when I actually want torecord this episode of the
podcast, normally what wouldhappen is I would have a nice
setup, I would put the threecameras up, I would do all these
things and I would sit down, hit the record button.
I said I am not going to wait.
The five second rule said five, four, three, two, one, hit
record, turn on the camera.
I actually still have my do-ragon and I even realized it

(01:47):
because I hit the five secondrule and I took action.
Guys.
So that's an example of it andit may not be that for you.
It may just be going on live.
It may just be hitting recordon YouTube.
It may just be asking your bossfor that promotion.
I remember the first time I didthat as well.
It was like you know what I'mgoing to do this, and I ended up
asking my boss for thatpromotion.
Let's talk about a few ways youcould actually implement the

(02:08):
five second rule today.
Step number one I actually wantyou to identify the moments
where you hesitate on taking anaction.
So I need you to pay attentionwhen somebody asks you a
question or there's somethingthat you have to do, and you sit
there and you freeze.
Now it may not be as easy toremember that, but I want you to
think about it.
Maybe it's before a toughconversation, maybe it's before
hitting post on Instagram orhitting subscribe on YouTube or

(02:29):
something like that, but makesure you are identifying the
moments where you pause.
Step number two once youidentify that moment, this is
when the actual action takesplace, right?
So we're going to start bycounting backwards from five.
So now you are getting out ofyour head and you're starting to
take motion, so you don't haveto wait.
Then, obviously, step numberthree is that action, that

(02:50):
acting immediately.
Do not wait, do not hesitate, get started today.
So again, this could be pickingup the phone call, booking that
call, calling that client backasking for that review, whatever
it is in your business.
We are taking action after weget to the number one.
That's step number three.
Again, the five-second rule isabout building momentum and
actually implementing thesesmall steps can actually lead to

(03:11):
big results.
We talked about what we need todo to take action, but we need
to understand why does this work?
When you think about fight orflight, if you are about to get,
let's say, someone's comingtowards you, that fight or
flight fear is going to tell youwhat the next steps are.
Some towards you, that fight orflight fear is going to tell
you what the next steps are.
Some people may freeze.
That is you not taking action.
Some people are like I'm goingto jump and spring out of that
fear.
If a dog is chasing you morethan likely not you are not

(03:33):
going to stand there and waitfor that dog to bite you, right,
you are probably going to run.
So that is the example of yourbrain getting out that
discomfort and taking action.
So this is why this works.
So, as we wrap up this episode,I want you guys to think about
what are some of the next stepsthat you need to take.
So I want you to think aboutwhat's one thing you've been
hesitating on.
It doesn't have to be the nextbig idea.
It could be something small, itcould be something as just

(03:55):
picking up the phone and callingyour family member or just
going for that walk.
I don't know exactly what youhave going on, but for me, it
was hitting record.
That was literally the purposeof me doing this and taking
action.
So I challenge you to implementthe five second rule today Five
, four, three, two, one hit, subscribe and also tell me what

(04:18):
was the thing you implementedunder this video on YouTube or
tag us on Instagram.
That's an example of youutilizing a five second rule
right after this episode andtelling us exactly what you did
whether you left a review, whether you left a comment,
whether you tagged us onInstagram.
You are taking action today byfollowing that five-second rule
and I promise you these smallactions will lead to big results
down the line.
Action beats hesitation everytime and you're one small action

(04:39):
away from changing your life,guys.
