upon reflection.
This podcast is dedicated tosharing these anchoring memories
(00:26):
from everyone's unique storiesin order to collectively
remember and testify of thereality of Jesus Christ and his
presence in our lives.
I'm your host, lily, and I'mvery excited to share these
experiences together.
Good evening, everybody.
Tonight we have Matea on thepodcast.
How are you, matea, doing?
Good, yeah, yay, will you mindintroducing yourself a little
(00:49):
bit Sure.
Matea (00:59):
So my name is Matea
Borget.
I grew up in Anchorage, alaska, and met my husband at BYU-Idaho
when I was studying Englishwith a creative writing emphasis
, and then we moved down herebecause he works at FamilySearch
just down the street.
Oh sweet and anyway.
So we've been here living inthis neighborhood for four years
.
Yeah, yeah, four years.
Yeah.
We have two kids, both boys, asix-year-old and a two-year-old
(01:23):
almost three.
Both boys, a six-year-old and atwo-year-old, almost three, and
when I'm not playing with them.
I like to write fantasy books orread books.
Read fantasy books.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And I do acting and plays atlocal theaters when I can.
Well, that's so cool.
You have all these cool thingsthat you like to do.
Lily (01:51):
Thanks, so I'll ask you
the question, matea what
memories do you have in yourlife that you reflect on, that
break your heart in remembranceof Jesus Christ and anchor you
to him?
Okay?
Matea (01:57):
So the biggest one that
has been sticking with me for
the longest so far is a timewhen I was on my mission in
Arizona.
It was my like third or fourthtransfer, I can't remember
exactly when, but it was mysecond companion, and this was
(02:20):
in 2014.
So we had the ability to useiPads and we were supposed to be
proselyting on Facebook.
Yeah, and so we had about anhour every day where we were
going to be either on a computeror on our tablets trying to
proselyte to people.
Yeah, and I hate just startingrandom conversations with people
that I don't know or have anyconnection to and being like hey
(02:43):
do you want to talk about Jesus, right?
Lily (02:46):
No, I'm here to scroll
Facebook, exactly.
Hey bye.
Matea (02:52):
Exactly, and my companion
was great, she had been on the
mission for a while, but we justkind of butted heads sometimes
and I was really tired this dayand didn't want to, didn't know
what I needed to be doing and Ifelt a prompting to read.
It was Jacob 5, I want to sayit was 44 or 49.
(03:15):
I don't remember exactly whichone, but I didn't even know if
these verses existed, becausenormally chapters in the Book of
Mormon are about 30 verses, soI was like 44, that's a weird
number, yeah, like where do Iget that number from, right?
So I knew it was a prompting andI knew it wasn't my own
thoughts, yeah.
But I looked at it and 44,jacob 5, 44 says and now
(03:40):
beholdest that I also cut downthat which cumbered this spot of
ground, that I might plant thistree in the stead thereof, and
I was like, yeah, it's such aweird verse Right After reading
that I wanted to know more aboutwhat the chapter was talking
about.
So I went back to the beginning, the chapter heading, and I read
(04:03):
through it all and it's Jacob's.
Jacob is quoting Zenos aboutthe allegory of the olive tree,
right and the vineyard.
Yes, yes, and it's supposed torelate to the people of God and
the gospel Correct and all thedifferent influences the
gathering of Israel?
Lily (04:21):
Yes, all that kind of
stuff, yes.
Matea (04:23):
And then he burns the
Lord of the vineyard, burns the
vineyard at the end.
Lily (04:26):
Yeah, and I just remember
being in seminary being like he
dunged the tree.
Yeah.
Matea (04:32):
Yeah, that's definitely
in there, pruned it and dugged
it and digged about it, yep so,but for whatever reason, that
chapter just really stuck withme.
And the 48 or 49 later it talksabout pride, like the loftiness
(04:52):
of the branches, and I was like, oh, maybe I have been a little
bit prideful and so I was ableto relate this chapter to me on
my mission, being like, okay,I've been taken from my home and
I've been asked to do somethingthat I'm not always comfortable
with, right, and I have goodparts.
You've been grafted, yes, yes.
(05:14):
I have good parts of me andthere's bad parts of me that I'm
trying to get away.
But they can't go away quicklybecause then the bad would
overtake all of the good.
Lily (05:25):
Right, because it's all
about him, about Christ wanting
to save the roots.
Yes, right, like the good.
Yes, him about Christ wantingto save like the roots.
Matea (05:29):
Yes, right, like the good
.
Lily (05:30):
Yes, right.
Matea (05:32):
And so this whole chapter
I have notes of like okay, this
is when I went on my missionand this is when I was in the
MTC and this is when I waslearning from my training leader
, my first companion, yeah, andeverything.
And then later on I was able tolike predict my next couple
transfers in the mission.
Lily (05:50):
And it wasn't exact and it
didn't need to be exact.
Matea (05:53):
Right, but my favorite
verse that stood out from this
chapter that I keep thinkingabout yeah, and it helps me just
remember who I am is verse 74,close to the end.
This is right before the Lordburns the vineyard Right, and
(06:15):
this is like the last ditcheffort type thing.
He's calling in other servantsto do stuff.
So they begin to work with thetree, the first tree, and it
says in verse 74,.
And thus they labored with alldiligence, according to the
commandments of the Lord of thevineyard, even until the bad had
(06:35):
been cast away out of thevineyard and the Lord had
preserved unto himself that thetrees had become again the
natural fruit and they becamelike unto one body and the fruit
were equal and the Lord of thevineyard had preserved unto
himself the natural fruit whichwas most precious unto him from
the beginning wow and therethere's been like little hints
(06:58):
of precious fruit in thischapter and natural fruit, and
that my goodness is equal to hisand that I've always been
(07:19):
precious to him and that it's adiligent labor process of
drawing closer to him and thenjust going forward and spreading
that goodness around.
And so now, because of this, diligence has also really stuck
out to me as like a word that Ishould focus on and try to apply
(07:42):
the commandments diligently andtake care of my family
diligently, as hard as it issometimes.
Lily (07:50):
Yeah, it does seem a
little daunting and overwhelming
, because I just feel like whenI think about diligent, it's
like constant, nonstop, 24-7, go, go, going, yeah, and that's
exhausting.
But maybe I'm thinking about itthe wrong way.
Matea (08:04):
Maybe it's different.
It's constant effort, but it'seffort with a purpose.
Yeah.
Lily (08:10):
And Not like just busy
work.
Yeah, and Not like just busywork, yeah.
Matea (08:12):
Yeah, you're moving
towards something, yeah so, but
yeah.
So now, ever since then, I'vebeen really excited about trees
and being a good tree, basically.
Lily (08:23):
Yeah, yeah, that's exactly
what it is.
What did you think of ElderKieran's talk that he gave this
past conference that God'sintent is to bring you home?
Yes?
Ron's talk that he gave thispast conference that God's
intent is to bring you home?
Yes, and how the entire pointof the plan of salvation and
Jesus Christ and his atonementis to bring you back.
You know, yes, and that'sliterally what God was doing in
(08:43):
this vineyard.
Right, he was taking this treeand he was trying to do the best
that he could with it, and then, at the end of the day, he
collects the fruit and he moveson.
So I was trying to do the bestthat he could with it and then,
at the end of the day, hecollects the fruit and he moves
on.
Matea (08:59):
So I thought that was
just something I just remembered
.
Yeah, he just wants to give usa nice big hug when we get up
there, right?
Yeah, even still in, like, I'veknown people that have fallen
away from the gospel and justtrying to center myself on
Christ, seeing their process ofwhat happened before they fell
(09:23):
away and everything thing, itgoes back to again that
scripture um, where he talksabout the loftiness of the
vineyard and the loftiness ofthe branches, and just reminding
myself that I can't be prideful, right, and I can't be judgy,
and I just gotta stay rooted inevery sense of the word, to the
gospel.
Yeah, that's how I'll become thegoal of being the natural fruit
(09:44):
right is to become the roots.
Lily (09:47):
Yes, which is what?
Yeah, which is the originalgoodness?
I think it's valuable.
Yeah, I do.
I, like I said before, I don'tthink I've ever heard anybody
describe Jacob five like this, and I think when you put a new
spin on it, it really kind ofyou can look at it and you can
think this is how much work theLord does for me, because that
(10:09):
is the biggest thing.
When people talk about it, youknow, in regards to the
gathering of Israel or something, there's always this emphasis
on how hard the master of thevineyard works and how much he
slaves and toils and mourns andweeps over his vineyard, and so
when you apply it to yourselflike that, it just is kind of
mind blowing of oh my gosh, thisis literally what the Lord is
(10:32):
doing for me.
Matea (10:33):
Right, right, and it's so
individual.
Lily (10:36):
Yeah, like every he knows
how to, he knows how to care for
the trees.
Yes, even though it might hurtor even though it might look
weird, or even though you knowhe is like.
They call him the mastergardener.
Matea (10:48):
Right.
Lily (10:48):
Yes, he knows what he's
doing and it's up to us to be
like ow, like you're pruning me,but I guess it's going to be
okay, you're going to help megrow Right and at the end of the
day, you'll see, I bet it'sgoing to feel so good when we
can feel and well, I guess youcan feel the atonement in your
life right now of like truerepentance.
You really can feel that.
(11:08):
But I do think there's going tobe this even more magnificent
level once we reach heaven andwe can just see and realize and
look back and reflect and belike, oh my gosh, I did it.
Thank you, jesus, I did itRight.
Like, look at what you've donefor me, look at what we've done
together, like this is amazing, you know.
Yeah, and I think that's goingto be a really cool day, with
(11:31):
that giant hug that I hope lastsforever.
Matea (11:33):
Yes.
Lily (11:34):
Never let me go Right yeah
.
Matea (11:41):
You also mentioned, just
like sometimes, the pruning and
the dunging.
It looks weird and it hurts, and it's not Heavenly Father
giving us those bad experiencesto hurt us.
It's to help us grow, andsometimes they might even be our
own fault, but he's still therewatching over us and directing
(12:07):
us on how to grow.
Another verse or part of theverse chapter that I really
liked the Lord of the vineyardand the servant, who are
basically Heavenly Father andChrist.
They weep over the tree at somepoint, but he just wants us to
(12:29):
be the precious natural fruitthat we are.
Lily (12:33):
Right, exactly.
Matea (12:35):
Yeah, I don't have any
other things come into my mind,
so cool If you don't have anyother thoughts or any other
stories you'd like to share, then would you mind leaving us
with a testimony?
Yeah, I mean, I can definitelybear my testimony.
Um, I don't think there'sanything else I really want to
(12:56):
say Sure, so, um, I never feellike my testimony is very like
strong or powerful or amazing orearth shattering, but it's mine
and it's what I need and itkeeps me going, keeps me
(13:16):
motivated in the church, and itmostly just comes from reading
the book of Mormon and readingthe Bible and going to church
every week and seeing theexamples of the faithful around
me and the unfaithful around meand what's going well in their
(13:38):
lives and what might not be, andjust knowing that the Lord is
there through everything.
And so, from all of thoseexamples around me, I know that
the church is true and I knowthat Jesus and Heavenly Father
love us profoundly, more than Icould ever know, even just got a
little glimpse of it.
(13:59):
But, um, and they want so badlyfor us to be home with them and
they'll give us all of theopportunities in this life and
in the next too, as they can toreturn home to them, and it's
just up to us to follow as bestwe can and it's not always
(14:22):
perfect, but as long as we'rediligent it's not always perfect
, but as long as we're diligentwe can return back to them and
I've seen in my life times whereI've needed the Lord and he's
been right there, not very faraway at all, and those have been
(14:44):
great reminders to me that Ineed to stay close and I need to
do all that I can to stay withHeavenly Father and stay with
Jesus.
Lily (14:57):
So that's partly why I
wanted to share my story today.
Matea (15:02):
Because if I'm not
reading my scriptures every day
or praying every day, then I canat least share my testimony
with my friend.
So yeah, I say that in the nameof Jesus Christ, Amen.
Lily (15:13):
Amen.
Well, I am very, very, verygrateful that you said yes and
that you came, because you'vegiven me a lot to think about
with your interpretation ofJacob 5 and what the Lord has
revealed to you, and thank youfor sharing your testimony.
It's amazing.
Matea (15:27):
You're welcome, thanks
for having me.
