The first gospel promise ever given appears in an unexpected place – right after humanity's fall into sin. Dr. Papa takes us on a profound journey through Genesis 3:14-16, exploring what theologians call the "Protevangelium" – the first announcement of redemption hidden within God's judgment of the serpent, Eve, and Adam.

Delving into the multi-faceted nature of the curse, Dr. Papa reveals how sin's consequences rippled through all creation, bringing everything under "the bondage of decay." While Adam and Eve received judgment tempered with hope, Satan's sentence was final and irrevocable. The serpent's belly-crawling existence would serve as a perpetual reminder of mankind's fall.

At the heart of this passage lies the mysterious prophecy of Genesis 3:15 – the promise of enmity between the serpent's seed and the woman's seed. Dr. Papa masterfully unpacks the multiple layers of meaning in this verse. On one level, it represents the age-long cosmic conflict between those aligned with Satan and those who belong to God's kingdom. On another level, it specifically prophesies Christ (the woman's seed) who would crush Satan's head while suffering a temporary heel wound at Calvary.

The contrast between these wounds reveals everything: Satan's head wound is fatal and permanent, while Christ's heel wound is temporary and leads to his exaltation. In this ancient text, we discover God's redemptive plan unveiled from the very beginning – that even in the moment of humanity's greatest failure, God was already promising the Savior who would defeat our ancient enemy. Listen as Dr. Papa brings these profound truths to light, showing how putting Jesus at the center makes even the most obscure passages come alive.

country.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Papa, can you tell me a story?
Do you really want me to tellyou a story?
Well, you go, get your brotherand your sisters and I will tell
you a story.
Well, you go, get your brotherand your sisters and I will tell
you a story.
Welcome to Devotions with DrPapa.
Gather your Bibles, gatheraround and let's look into the

(00:37):
written word, which reveals tous the living word, who is our
Lord Jesus Christ.
Us the living word, who is ourLord Jesus Christ.
Today we're in Genesis, chapter3, verses 14 through 16.
Let me read those to you.
Then the Lord God said to theserpent because you have done
this, cursed, are you more thanall cattle and more than every

(01:02):
beast of the field.
On your belly you will go anddust, you will eat all the days
of your life and I will putenmity between you and the woman
and between your seed and herseed.
He shall bruise you on the headand you shall bruise him on the

(01:23):
heel.
To the woman he said I willgreatly multiply your pain in
childbirth and pain.
You will bring forth children.
Yet your desire will be foryour husband and he will rule
over you.
Now, today we're going toactually talk mostly about

(01:43):
verses 14 and 15, and we'll getto verse 16 next week.
The title of today's lessons isthe Dire Consequences of Sin.
This passage describes thecurse, which actually is several
curses or phases of the curse.

(02:06):
It's not just one single curse.
There's a curse on the animalkingdom, there's a curse on the
serpent, there's a curse on thewoman, and then there's one on
Adam and his descendants, andthen there's a curse on the very
elements of the ground itself.

(02:28):
Now let me read to you a littlepassage from the Genesis record.
Henry Morris's look at the bookof Genesis.
This is on page 118 of his veryscholarly interpretation,
interpretation of Genesis 118.
I'm sorry, genesis, the wholebook of Genesis, really, it's

(02:49):
just on page 118.
Since Adam had been appointedto exercise dominion over the
earth and since Adam was tobegin to die he's beginning that
whole process of dyingphysically his dominion also
would begin to die.
Since that time we know thatthe whole creation groans and

(03:13):
travails in pain together untilnow.
That's Romans 8, 22.
This condition is called by theApostle Paul the bondage of
corruption, or better, thebondage of decay, for the
creation was made subject tofutility.

(03:33):
That's Romans 8, verse 20 and21.
As for the personal aspects ofthe curse concerned.
God pronounced them in the samechronological order in which
the specific acts of sin hadbeen committed.
The first curse was on Satan, then on Eve, then on Adam.

(03:59):
For Adam and Eve, however, theirsubjection under the curse was
in hope, as Romans 8, 20 tellsus, a hope of eventual
redemption.
For Satan, however, it wasfinal and irrevocable.
He not only had rebelledagainst God in heaven, but now

(04:23):
he had also infected mankindwith his rebellion.
You see, god dealt differentlywith Satan than the way in which
he dealt with Adam and Eve.
Adam and Eve had a hope ofeventual redemption and a
reconciliation with theirheavenly father, but for Satan,

(04:47):
he was a fallen angel who hadonce worshipped in the very
presence of God, beholding theface of God, fully understanding
who God was, and now he hadbrought his rebellion down to
the creatures that God had madeand had infected them with his

(05:10):
rebellion.
And the condemnation, thedestruction that God brought to
Satan was entirely different.
There was no hope for Satan.
His eventual doom would be inthe lake of fire and in fact,
some of Satan's angels the Biblemakes it plain were immediately

(05:34):
cast into the abyss, and theBible tells us that they were
put into a place of eternaldarkness that was reserved for
Satan and his angels, the placewhere Satan would eventually
find himself.
Now let's look at verse 14,where it tells us that Satan was

(05:55):
cursed.
Above all, read the verse there.
In verse 14, it says Becauseyou have done this, cursed are
you more than all cattle, cursedabove, more than all the other
creatures.
Now, why would that be?
Well, it's because Satan wasdirectly culpable in deceiving

(06:16):
Adam and Eve, and this curse wasa perpetual reminder to mankind
of the cause of his fall.
And it was a reminder of thefinal destination of Satan,
whatever his beauty and posturebefore the fall.

(06:40):
Because you know, there aretheologians who believe that
Satan was a beautiful creatureonce before, and they believe
that he may have even walkedupright, and whatever his beauty
and whatever his posture mayhave been, henceforth he would
glide on his belly inhumiliation and be an object of

(07:03):
dread and loathing.
And, as I say to my friends,I'm not afraid of snakes, except
for big ones and small ones.
You see, snakes are an objectof dread and loathing.

(07:25):
And then, one more thing thatshould be noted that all the
other animals were brought underthe curse at this time,
although none of them had sinned.
The serpent was merely cursedabove all the rest.
But every beast henceforth hadthe sentence of death in its

(07:49):
members.
Each was a part of man'sdominion, and it was by man's
sin that death came into theworld, and man's sin infected
everything in that dominion.
Now just think about it.

(08:13):
It's logical.
Every man that came after Adamand Eve, all of Adam's
descendants, were also infectedby Adam's very bad and sinful
choice.
Had you and I done anything atthat time?
Of course not, but we areinfected by Adam's choice.
Had the animals done anythingwrong?
Of course not, but they wereinfected by Adam's choice.

(08:36):
Had the creation done anythingwrong?
No, but the creation wasinfected and affected by Adam's
choice.
Now look at verses 15 and 16.
Let me read verse 15 to you andI will put enmity between you

(08:57):
and the woman talking aboutSatan.
I will put enmity or hatredbetween you and the woman and
between your seed and her seed.
He, talking about the woman'sseed, shall bruise you on the
head and you shall bruise him onthe heel.
Now, was this curse pronouncedagainst the snake or against the

(09:24):
evil satanic spirit thatpossessed the snake's body?
Well, you know the answer tothat it was against the
malevolent spirit controllingits body and spirit.
Who was that old serpent calledthe devil?

(09:44):
Henceforth, satan is known asthe god of this world Since Adam
had forfeited his dominion overthe physical realm.
He forfeited his dominion overthe physical realm to Satan, and
that's why Satan is known asthe god of this world.

(10:07):
Satan probably believed thatAdam and Eve and all their, the
woman, would not be his willingally.

(10:35):
In fact, the scripture says Iwill put enmity between you and
the woman.
Satan may have expected thatshe would easily deceive her
husband and lead him by the noseinto following Satan, but alas,
such was not the case.
As God said, she would not ruleover her husband.

(10:58):
In fact, the scripture saysyour desire shall be for your
husband, but he shall rule over.
Satan may have expected thiswoman, whom he deceived so
easily, to produce an army offaithful followers in her own

(11:18):
progeny.
But once again, he was deadwrong when God said I will
greatly multiply your pain inchildbirth.
In pain you will bring forthchildren, perhaps, just as we
are.
Satan was blinded by his sin andhe could not fully comprehend

(11:42):
the full implications of thecurse that predicted that he
would only bruise the heel of aneventual savior of the world,
and that savior would crush hishead, dealing a fatal blow to
himself.
So let me ask you a questionwhat motivates Satan to continue

(12:05):
the struggle if he knows hewill eventually lose?
Is it hope inspired byspiritual blindness that cannot
comprehend the full implicationof the?
Or is it just plain enmitydriven by blind hatred and

(12:29):
animosity?
After all, it is his nature tolie, steal, kill and destroy.
He can't stop doing and beingwhat he is until incarcerated in
the lake of fire.
Now let me point out anotherthing to you.
Genesis 3.15 is known as theProtevangelium.

(13:00):
You didn't know that word, didyou?
It's P-R-O-T Evangelium.
P-r-o-t Evangelium that wordmeans the first gospel.
It's the first place in theBible that promises the coming
and victory of our Redeemer.
This prophetic verse alreadylooks forward to the time when

(13:24):
Satan will be completely crushedbeneath the feet of the woman's
triumphant seed.
This is a strange prophecy, since only man can produce seed.
Have you ever pondered that thewoman's seed Satan's seed?

(13:49):
It's certainly not Satan, because he is an angelic spirit.
Nor is it Eve who is a woman,so it must refer to some kind of
spiritual progeny.
So there are multiple layers ofmeaning in this verse.

(14:12):
First of all, satan's seed arethose who are knowingly and
willingly setting themselves atenmity with the woman's seed.
At enmity with the woman's seed, they possess the character of
the adversary and seek to opposeGod's purpose in creation and

(14:38):
in redemption.
Do you know people like that?
Have you heard the phrase?
He's got the devil in him?
Well, sometimes that phrase hasmore truth in it than we
realize.
When I was in college, mycollege roommate's grandfather

(14:58):
sometimes referred to people bysaying the truth just ain't in
them.
Well, that's a direct quotefrom the book of first john,
where the prophet the, thefollower of jesus john, would
say the truth isn't in them.
And he was referring to peoplewho claim to be Christians but

(15:21):
did not live by the commandmentsof the scriptures.
And he would say the truth isnot in them.
Well, there are people who arelike that.
There is no truth in Satan andthere is no truth in his
followers.
And there's no truth in peoplewho pretend to be Christians but

(15:42):
are actually the seed of Satan.
Then there's the seed of thewoman.
Who are they?
The seed of the woman are thosewho, by faith, are brought into
a right relationship with theheavenly Father.
They are the children of God.
To as many as call upon Hisname, god gives the right to be

(16:06):
the children of God.
There is an age-long conflictbetween the children of the
kingdom of God and the childrenof the wicked one.
If you have spiritual eyes withwhich to see, you can perceive

(16:27):
that age-long conflict in ourworld today between the kingdom
of God and the secular worldlykingdom.
Now there's another level ofunderstanding about the seed of
the woman and the seed of Satan.
There is another primary seedof the serpent, known as the son

(16:52):
of perdition, who's describedin 2 Thessalonians, chapter 2
and verse 3.
And he's none other than theAntichrist, to whom the dragon
gives his power and throne andauthority, as described in
Revelation, chapter 12, in verse3.
The dragon is the devil and hegives his authority to the son

(17:15):
of perdition, who is theAntichrist.
The Antichrist, the seed of thewoman, is the virgin-born,
conceived by Holy Spirit, lordJesus Christ, who battles with
and destroys Satan himself, crushing his head and destroying

(17:37):
the works of the evil one.
Yes, of course Satan bruisesJesus' heel at Calvary in a
temporary wound that appearsfatal but ultimately is not, as
God lays on him the iniquity ofus all, so that he may serve as

(18:03):
the final, perfect, sacrificiallamb, as Peter said in his first
sermon on the day of Pentecost.
But God raised him up again, putting an end to the agony of
death, since it was impossiblefor him to be held in its power.

(18:25):
Did you get that?
It was impossible for him to beheld in its power.
Just as we sing on EasterSunday, up from the grave he
arose with a mighty triumph o'erhis foes and he triumphed over

(18:47):
Satan, who was his perpetual foe.
Now I want to contrast thesewounds Satan's wound on his head
and Jesus' wound on his heel.
Satan was wounded on his head.
Jesus was wounded on his heel.
Satan was wounded on his head.
Jesus was wounded on his heel.
Satan's wound was permanent.
Jesus' wound was temporary.

(19:09):
Satan's wound was fatal.
Jesus' wound was superficialand non-fatal.
Jesus, I'm sorry.
Satan's wound caused thedestruction of all the works of
the evil.
One.
Jesus' wound resulted in theredemption of all mankind that

(19:30):
would believe on him.
Satan's wound resulted in himbecoming our defeated foe.
Jesus' wound resulted in himbeing exalted as Lord of Lords
and King of Kings.
Satan's wound brought him onestep closer to being locked for

(19:52):
a thousand years in the abyss.
Jesus' wound resulted inbringing him one step closer to
ruling on David's throne for athousand years.
Satan's wound caused him toknow for certain that his
eventual judgment would be inthe lake of fire.
Jesus' wound resulted in himknowing for certain that he

(20:15):
would reign with his Father onhis eternal throne his father on
his eternal throne and knowingthat he is worthy to receive
glory and honor and power andriches and wealth and dominion.
Now why, brothers and sisters, why is this verse in genesis,
chapter 3, and verse 15, soimportant to you and me?

(20:37):
Because it is the first gospel.
It is the proteevangelium.
It is that verse thatprophesied our eventual Redeemer
.
It prophesied the eventualredemption of all who would
believe in the Lord Jesus Christand put their trust and

(20:59):
confidence in the blood of theLamb that would eventually be
shed on Calvary's cross.
For you and me, and as I'vetold you over and over and over
again, if you put Jesus in themiddle of these verses that are
sometimes obscure, it makes themall come alive.

(21:20):
It makes them all come alive.
