Dr Robert Jackson (00:16):
Papa, can you
tell me a story?
Do you really want me to tellyou a story?
Well, you go, get your brotherand your sisters and I will tell
you a story.
Well, you go, get your brotherand your sisters and I will tell
you a story.
Welcome to Devotions with DrPapa.
Gather around, grab your Biblesand let's look into the written
(00:37):
word, which reveals to us theliving word, who is our Lord
Jesus Christ.
Today we're in Genesis, chapter3, verse 20 and 21.
Now the man called his wife'sname Eve, because she was the
mother of all the living.
The Lord God, made garments ofskin for Adam and his wife and
(01:00):
clothed them.
And clothed them.
Previous verses that we'vediscussed pronounced the great
curse which we have discussed atlength.
God also promised a comingRedeemer.
When God promised a Redeemer, instead of doubting God's Word
(01:24):
like Adam and Eve did when Satanfirst tempted them, this time
they believed God's promise.
Now, how do we know that?
Well, look at what Adam namedhis wife.
He didn't continue to bow up infurther rebellion and anger
(01:48):
after God had pronounced thecurse.
He didn't name her Cursed Oneor Rebellious One, a repentant
(02:11):
heart, a trusting attitude and awillingness to now submit
himself to the Lord and obeyGod's original command to be
fruitful and multiply by namingher Eve, which means life.
Now, why would he do that?
Well, it's because she was tobecome the mother of all the
living.
Obviously, both of them hadrepented of their rebellion and
(02:36):
were now willing to do what Godexpected.
Well, what God expects of allof us, which is to trust and
obey.
For there's no other way to behappy in Jesus but to trust and
(02:56):
obey.
Many of you remember that songfrom way back when, when most of
us in our childhood sang hymnsout of the hymn book and we
learned that the only way to behappy in Jesus was to trust and
obey.
And what's true for you and metoday was true for them Trusting
(03:18):
and obeying God is the only wayto experience true contentment
in this life.
Now, there's a lot of truth inthat hymn and I want to say that
again.
Dear listener, get that downdeep in your heart.
Trusting and obeying God is theonly way for you and me to
(03:42):
experience true contentment inthis life.
God promised that the seed ofthe woman would bring eventual
salvation to all mankind.
So they chose to believe thatparticular promise and they set
(04:03):
about to obey His command, to befruitful and multiply.
True faith in God's Word isalways preceded by personal
repentance.
So Adam and Eve repented oftheir rebellion and they began
to obey God.
(04:24):
That was true for Adam and Eveand that's true for you and me.
True repentance is alwaysfollowed by sincere obedience.
When you and I meet so-calledChristians who are all talk and
no action, in other words, hypocritical folks, their
(04:46):
repentance is fake.
Adam and Eve had no way to seeinto the future and understand
the long-term consequences oftheir brief rebellion against
God.
But I do believe they repented.
They cast themselves on themercy of God.
Therefore Adam named his wifeEve, meaning life, because she
(05:17):
was the mother of all living.
Now let's look at verse 21.
Now we've talked about thisverse briefly, let's talk about
it at length.
Today.
The Lord, god, made garments ofskin for Adam and his wife and
clothed them.
Here is the beginning of thescarlet thread, the trail of
(05:52):
blood that runs throughoutBecause of their grievous sin.
God made coats of skin for Adamand Eve and clothed them
himself.
With great sadness, adam andEve watched as God killed one or
(06:12):
maybe two of their formerfriends, spilling their blood to
make for them a covering toatone for their wickedness.
Listen to this verse inLeviticus, chapter 17 and verse
11, and you'll better understand.
(06:32):
For the life of the flesh is inthe blood and I have given it
to you on the altar to makeatonement.
That word atonement means acovering To make atonement for
your souls, for it is the blood,by reason of the life, that
makes atonement.
You see, elsewhere the Biblesays without the shedding of
(06:55):
blood, there is no forgivenessof sins, there's no remission of
sins.
Adam and Eve in this experience, they learned from the very
start that a man-made coveringthat means the fig leaves was
inadequate and only an atonementprovided by God himself would
(07:21):
suffice.
That's why God had regard forAbel's blood sacrifice a little
bit later and rejected Cain'svegetable sacrifice, which led
to Cain's wrath and eventualmurder of his brother Abel.
Much, much later, when Noahexited the ark, he sacrificed
(07:46):
animals in a blood sacrifice asGod directed him.
And we see this trail of blood, the scarlet thread, continuing
to weave its way through thescriptures.
And then later, abraham, uponGod's direction, nearly
sacrificed Isaac, his only son.
(08:06):
But then God provided asubstitute when he pointed out a
ram in the thicket, which thenpoints to our eventual
substitute the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Hebrews sacrificed thePassover lamb on the night
(08:27):
before leaving Egypt, creating apermanent picture of our
eventual Passover lamb, the LordJesus Christ.
And that scarlet threadcontinues to weave its way
through the Holy Scriptures.
The Levitical system ofsacrifices, instituted by God
(08:49):
through Moses, involved manyblood sacrifices, but each one
pointed to a promised Messiahwho would one day come and
deliver us from our sin.
And you see, that trail ofblood is woven into the warp and
(09:11):
woof of the sacred pages, andHoly Scriptures can only be
understood in the context of thescarlet thread that is woven
throughout.
The scarlet thread of bloodsacrifice is continuously
pointing to the climactic eventin Scripture, which is the cross
(09:34):
of Calvary, where God, theFather, poured out His just
wrath on the sin of man, on Hisonly Son, who paid a debt we
could not pay and died a deathhe did not deserve to provide
for us a salvation so great thatwe can barely comprehend.
(09:59):
But please understand that youwere not redeemed with
perishable things like silver orgold from your futile way of
life inherited from yourforefathers, but with precious
blood as of a lamb, unblemishedand spotless, the blood of
(10:19):
Christ.
As Peter told us, the trail ofblood started in the garden when
God sacrificed a lamb to coverAdam and Eve's sin.
He continues to cover our sintoday with the blood of Jesus,
our Passover lamb.
Now let me ask you a questionwhat can you do to erase a
(10:45):
single sin?
The answer is nothing.
We sing a song out of our hymnbook that says what can wash
away my sin?
And the answer is nothing butthe blood.
When you stand before God inheaven and he says why should I
let you into my heaven?
(11:05):
Dear listener, don't startsaying anything about how good
you are, or your lack of badness, or your church attendance, or
singing in the choir, or goingto the women's missionary union,
or giving money to the church,or that your granddaddy was a
preacher, or that you were aRepublican and you voted for
(11:27):
Donald Trump.
Don't say any of those things.
The only right answer is thatyou trusted in the blood of
Jesus.
This is my only hope, this ismy only plea, but that thy blood
was shed for me.
O Lamb of God, I come.
