checking out the latest head lines in MMA and boxing.
Maybe a little bit of your d MS than some
of my she apt but Luke Thomas, back off the bird,
back where you belong in that chair. I would never
smell that chair under any circumstance. This is the chair,
by the way, where Pablo Torret finds out. Can't Pablo
get to the bottom of the Epstein situation? Uh? Well
would they kill him? They?
Speaker 1 (01:19):
You know, the vengeance has no boundance. But yeah, happy
to be back. Do you see that butt sniffer got arrested.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Yeah finally, Yeah, he had a good run though. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Well, I mean you know he is the MK fan
of the year. Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
My dogs would love that guy, you know, they really,
they really would. It'd be great right there, Luke, how
was your vacate? Please tell the people.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
You know me. I'd normally like taking these long ass vacations.
This one was about half the length of the normal
one and.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Only two episodes. By the way, the people that filled
in brought it. So shout out to those guys.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Shot Sean to tell Mike Bond who also filled in.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Rave Bartholomew bred Okamoto.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
Yes, yes, yes, so shouts to all those folks. Dude,
I gotta tell you. We went to Portugal and ten
out of ten, I mean, what what a what a
spectacular place.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Okay, the last time you were at something like this,
you fell in love with your wife and soccer in Madrid.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
So I went and toward the you've never heard of
this team, but I went in toward the Benfica Stadium,
And I told you I grew up in in like
a town that was called.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Little we We We stayed. I know about Benfico, two
Sporting I mean I get around.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, well, uh yeah, well the Sporting. I
didn't realize how close the Sporting stadium is. It's just
down the way. We stayed right literally right next to
the Benfica Stadium. And uh so we had to take
ubers in every day. Dude, Portugal is I cannot. I
cannot overstate to you. If you've never gone and you've
toyed with the idea of going, yes you absolutely must.
(02:49):
I was expecting it to be like Spain, where everything
is really nice except the people who are absolutely terrible,
and it was not that way at all, like the
in Spain, like they get shipped if you have to
speak English with them like that was not that way.
My wife speaks Portuguese for the most part, so it
was fine. But do English. Is everywhere, Everything's affordable, You've
got a million transportation options. The weather, oh my fucking god,
(03:12):
we see the weather is as perfect as weather gets
you hot enough, hot enough in the afternoon to go
to the pool, and then nice enough at night to
have just a small jacket.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
You healed part of your soul on this trip.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
It was really nice. It did lead to me to
have a question, because you grew up with a bunch
of people from Portugal. Yes, okay, so here's what I'm
trying to understand. How fucking stupid do you have to
be to look around Portugal and go we need to
leave this for Connecticut. You got to be the biggest
fucking moron on the planet.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
I did know a lot of families who, by design,
the parents would come to the States to start their business,
make the money with the hopes of retiring back.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
Yeah, that seems right, Like I cannot, under no circumstance
is any part of Connecticut and upgrade zero parts.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Tell that to Glover.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
By the way, tons of Brazilians there too, which obviously
makes a lot of sense. You can well imagine. I
will say, the food not nearly as good as Spain. Fine,
good enough. I had a lot of bacalao. Yes, I
had a pastel da Natas, I had pastel de b lam.
I had a bunch of I had a bunch of
good food.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
But now it's good a Spain.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
However, However, dude, if you want to go see history stuff,
they got it. If you want to do so, munch
I took took it to the to the aquarium there.
Oh my god, dude, it was incredible. I couldn't believe
how good it was. We took the fannicular from one
end of the boat to the beach to the other.
We took light rail, we took the we took the
They have took tooks everywhere you pay like you know,
I didn't really have that there everywhere everywhere, and some
(04:41):
of those guys, some of that can be a little
bit of a scam. Anyway, long story short, dude, if
you've ever thought, hey, I want to go to European vacation,
I don't want to break the budget, but I want
to see a cool place Portugal.

(06:14):
to say? I don't know what am I doing here?
Speaker 1 (06:16):
How were the shows? And I was going I did
not watch them.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
They were big and they were important, I thought, you know,
in terms of coming off of the pay per view
and then of course with the ALIAC news and I
don't know that was huge, Idad that what made you
more unhappy? Your boy Topooria siding with the milk boys
or Yahoo? Which one? I mean, which one he is?
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (06:36):
I mean, like I've said a million times, dude, these
guys make it impossible to like want to know more
about that.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
That's your boy, l L.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
And I saw that. I was like, all right, well
maybe it's good to have an interview.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Yeah, you know. You can also reach the show at
Morning Combat at gmail dot com for this Friday's return
of fan subs and dead wrongs and showing Mike Nicolar activity.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Yes, yeah, I saw you. I watched the highlights, but
then I fully watched last night the Max Dustin fight
from three eighteen. What is your opinion of how Max looked?
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Uh? Not pound for pound top ten, but still quas highly,
meaning that at any given fight at this point in
his age thirty three, he can either excel or he
could show us the beginnings of turning old, but then
can also turn that back, like Poorier's last six seven fights,
where it's like, you know, every third fight it looked
like it might be the end, and then he bounces
back big.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
I think I saw a resurgent effort in this window
of the tail end of him in big fights.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
I think that because we did preview that show, that
that fight together just very quickly, I wanted to say,
I thought that our pre fighter analysis, well my pre
fight analysis was and ended up being quite correct, which
was that Max's Max's career peak is him as featherweight champion. Yes,
he clearly is much better this time and looked much better.
Did you think Poorier looked washed? It looked to me
(08:00):
like his better days were yes, yes, yes, yes, it's
probably good way to put it.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
I mean, he got he did.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
He was an insane shape. But but I was just
gonna say like I felt like I felt like the
story about what the difference was for Max was the
story of the fight. However, I don't know that I
saw anyone in there that I thought was going to
beat to Poria or if Islam ever comes back, beat Islam.
I didn't see that.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Well, he might give up the belt to avoid Armine.
So there's a lot going on with your boy too.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Wow, I mean, he just said a bunch of bulls.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
You also did We didn't get to hear your thoughts
on usik Pa that's been going on.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
So one, Okay, is Daniel Dubois the dumbest motherfucker on
planet earthy?
Speaker 2 (08:42):
I don't think that party thing is as bad. He
had the party before the Joshua fight too. It wasn't
like he was drinking and grinding.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
With chicks Joshua Oh sick.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
I'm just saying, Look, I don't deal with like, I
don't look at him as a scholar per se, but
I look at him as that's the most dangerous version
of him. And look, he got God. And people are
now questioning not does he not have toughness, but does
he not have like the ability to bounce back after
being hurt?
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Like does he not have focus? Is a bigger issue
for me. But Usik all time fucking great. I mean,
he's just so fucking awesome.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Yeah, dude, I don't. Paco looked like, m yeah, yeah,
I hear you. You know, I hear you. It was fine.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
I guess all right, So yeah we're about to what
am I there's something that you gotta hit your levels right.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
When you don't have the levels right, it's like.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
It does suck. Also, can that's a question did they
give bullshit ask music for and Max's walk out. Did
I hear that correctly? Once they switched when Max was
walking out to the arena, I heard the Hawaiian kickboxer.
But before that there was some weird ass music and
correct me if I'm wrong. But by the way, what
the fuck was the point of Lil Wayne walking out
with If.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
He's just walking it doesn't seem like the UFC.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Yeah, everybody, there's little Did they.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
Not let him come out and do the boxing bit
where you sing? They don't let you do that.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
Deucy doesn't like guys to do anything different, so you
know it just ended up being that.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
But I mean, they let him change the shorts. But look,
we're on our way to a triple Monstopsony in combat sports.
I don't know if you've been following. Yeah, and the
Ali Act will be the way in for that to happen,
but that's not on our docket today. You've come probably
for our first category. But before I get in there,
you heard his name once? That is long Island Luke,
the bloke there, the top guy from an ausse.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Did you get done while I was gone?
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Nope?
Speaker 5 (10:31):
Still reigning defending boy Friend.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Of the Year Main card minute great podcast as well,
so thank you for playing this week. Luke. Let's kick
it off okay with our top story, and that is,
of course, what went down this past Saturday in Abu Dhabi,
a fight Night card that was pretty deep from the
standpoint of storylines. Fighters. We need to see that side
of the world does get better lineups and matchmaking. But
(10:53):
the main event, a middleweight tilt with title implications and
the potential crossroads fight, didn't necessarily see a Robert Whittaker
who still didn't have it. We had these two r
DR Raneer de Ritter and Robert Whitaker fighting on largely
even turns over terms, over five rounds, and the first
three rounds in particular being a little bit crazy and
fun to watch. In the end, our Dr scores a
(11:15):
split decision victory over the former champion. With that win,
Luke four victories in like eight and a half months
of the UFC fighter does Rneer de Ritter Is he
deserving of putting himself in line for the next shot
at the middleway title after August three to nineteen title
defense for Drikistuples against Hamza Chimaya.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
I'd like to see it. I'd like to see it now,
so you have if you just evaluate this performance and
then the place of the division more broadly. The only
other argument you could make for a title shot, assuming
that there isn't some rematch between DDP and Hamsat that
we have to entertain, would be Nesserdine Imovov. And he
is coming off obviously the win over is he a
former champion, but he's.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
In their doghouse in the same way that Ivel is correct.
Speaker 5 (12:02):
He's also fighting uh Kyle Bohalio.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
When is that?
Speaker 5 (12:05):
That is September on the so.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
It's almost okay, there's competing number one contender exactly right.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
So that's my point.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Though he's higher in the rankings, I think he's currently
sitting at right around one or two three?
Speaker 2 (12:14):
Is he three?
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Yeah, but Strickland's one.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Who's two?
Speaker 5 (12:17):
Now Strickland's two? And uh yeah. It's like DDP champ
Hams out.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
One point trying to make us Strickland's not likely to
get a next title shot. Hamzat's already there. So like,
Imovov has certainly pole position as it stands today, and
I guess if he beats Kyle Bohalio, to me, that
would be a pretty your your case for then giving
him a title shot at that point would be very strong.
We typically tend to look, at hey, if you beat
(12:45):
Robert Whittaker, that is enough given everything else that usually
have Historically you go right to the that's exactly right.
That's usually your your your get out of jell free Carter,
however you wants to put it, that's what I don't
know if that should be the same thing anymore. Now
we're gonna have a conversation about that. It's not like
it's not a good win over a good name who's still,
to your point, put up a credible offensive effort over
(13:07):
the course of five rounds. However, what I would say
is the fight kind of fizzled out the longer it went.
The last two rounds to me, were a lot of
RDR just kind of holding in the referee not necessarily
intervening all of the first exhausted. But this is my point, like,
you have a win if you're this is the UFC resume.
(13:28):
He beats Gerald meer Schart, he submits him, He beats
Kevin holl And, he submits him. He stops Bo Nickel
with strikes, and then you jump very high to the
top of the division and you eke out a win,
which is fine. I don't mind that part, but it
wasn't like there was any kind of late hardcore push
to really seal the deal. He kind of just coasted,
but there was no extra gear into the championship rounds.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
It was game game management round.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
Exactly what it was in those final rounds. So for me,
if they decided to give it to him, which is
the one I prefer because I just feel like he's
a very unique kind of fighter, with a unique skill set,
a very unique and weird body type. To be perfectly honest,
that to me is more fun. And again you can
make a credible argument, however, is his resume, for as
(14:15):
good as it is, is it more deserving of a
title shot than I Mavov assuming he gets that winner
for Bajolio more interesting, It's a lot more interesting, that's
the argument. The argument is ultimately he is more interesting
and fun, and god knows, we could use some of
that in middleweight, and they do. But it's not a
lights out case, no.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
But UFC does tend to reward a lot of activity
in a short time, which is what he's doing. They
tend to reward the hot hand who has the momentum
at that moment. Nobody's got more momentum right now than
our dr But this was supposed to be the fight,
if we're really being honest, where he was like kind
of found out over five rounds, Like if he didn't
get in an early submission. I talked to Mike Bond
(14:54):
and Your Spot on Friday, going like, is there actually
a path for victory for de Ridder here? By decision?
He shocked us all to whatever degree we had even
though he was a slight betting underdog coming in. I
felt for this fight to go that way. He was
gonna have to be on his terms. He's one of
those fighters. If it goes on his terms, he can
beat anybody. Look, this went against that grain and he
(15:14):
still got it done. This is not the guy that
had irresponsible defense against Meershower and get knocked around. What
has changed in the last eight months for him to
be from that version of Meershark to this one where
not perfect. He still gets hit, but there's moments where
his striking is effective and there's moments where it's not.
And his gas tank is there, his chin is there.
(15:35):
He's also like two and a half divisions visibly bigger
than Whitaker. How do you explain the mirror shark version
of RDR to this one, who, yes, is knocking on
the door for the title and I want him to
get a shot.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
I don't quite know what to explain in terms of
the meer shart one, because I agree with you. He looked,
I don't know, off balanced, like a newborn deer. I
did not think his striking was particularly interesting in this fight.
He haditional Okay, well, here's the thing. He has, those
knees to the body, which is the best thing that
he does. Those clearly had a monster effect on Whittaker
(16:07):
early and often. I love that about his game. It's
obviously what folded bow Nicol as well. They're a potent force,
God bless him to And the point you raise when
he's jabbing, he's quite effective with it, but dude, he
is falling over his feet and out of position constantly.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
No, he's not technically sound, but there's moments where it's effective.
There's moments where he gets off three four jabs in
a row and it's sticking him.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
And he never fires in combination, particularly hand foot combination.
If he does anything in combination, which is rare. It's
just hand hand hand and not much more.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
With it with slow squaredeness.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
Well, so, first of all, he's really big for the
way class as you indicated. I think that enables him
to absorb shots. Dude, that shot that Whittaker dropped him
with in round three, there was a video if you
guys saw it. Did you see the video that came
out was on Instagram. I think UFC put it out.
Someone was recording it from their phone, which everyone does now,
and you can hear the shot from the phone. Dude,
Whittaker aid it on him. The fact that he survived
(17:02):
that is fucking miracul.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
Wainker was just getting his ask kick for ten seconds,
so it was this crazy swing of momentum.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
So he can absorb shots, and then his passing is
pretty dynamic. His top control is pretty dynamic. He's big
and he can just blanket people both in the clinch
and on top and I think that actually explains a
lot of his success. But Dude, someone who is good
like Dude Imovov might chew him the fuck up. Because
if you can if you have fast feet, if you
(17:27):
can take angles, if you can hit, and then you know,
defensively react or move or set things up.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
He's there to be.
Speaker 1 (17:34):
Hit over and over and over and over and over again.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
I gotta pause you. I hear in my ear there
is breaking news. Let's bring in Lupinosita.
Speaker 4 (17:45):
So we heard rumors that Tatsuro Taira Amir Albasi was
off this weekend. There is a new main event, Tatsuro
Tyra is now taking on Hung Sung part.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
All right, we will break that down. The main event
in top is that we have that in the run
donor is this the no we don't have in the rundown?
All right, well, then let's hit that right now, Luke,
I don't. We're gonna get into it on Friday with
our preview of UFC warehouse. But is this one of
the worst Apex cards ever? And it just got worse
with a long with the loss of this main event
Hong Kong Park ten and zero.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
I think he's one of the road to UFC guys,
if memory serves yes, he is.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
He won it.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Twenty nine years old, coming off wins of Carlos Hernandez
We stopped in the first. All of his UFC fights
are come by way of stoppage. He stopped at Guy
Rode DFC Round one, round one, Round three, round two,
Round one. Look, I'll say this, I don't know what
to make of this main event. The ufc' is just
plug and play at this point. That's the business model.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
We know that, sure, and they've been great lately even
you know, I've liked the fight nights lately, especially when
they're on the road.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
But this is I guess my only question would be
ALBOSSI has had a series of health complications over the
last couple of years. Really, I do wonder if that
is playing a role, if this is just traditional Hey
I rolled my ankle in camp or something.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
I don't know. Interesting stuff right there. So a new
main event for Saturday. We're certainly going to have a
lot more on Friday show to preview that, Luke. What
we were in the midst of is certainly talking about
the changes of Reneer de rid Or made and the
parts about him that make him awkwardly elite. I mean,
you watch him visibly and he's so slow. So is
it like an off timing thing, because certainly you can
(19:22):
relate that to some other sports. I remember in basketball
people just have a off timing and boxing certainly if
you're he doesn't win by his boxing. His boxing is
just there to set it up. But in general, is
he just a thing that you can't pick it out
on tape. You got to feel it out in real
life to try to pick up his timing.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
Yeah, I would say that what you notice from Whitaker,
I think is going to be a pretty consistent issue
is that guys don't want to get wrapped up with him.
He's got that long arm to clinch over the back,
which he uses to trip or at least harassed or
a bare minimum stall out guys. And if he does
get the back or it does get on top, he's
obviously going to be a pretty significant problem they and
those knees up the middle are a problem as well.
(19:59):
They just don't want close contact with him. But he's
long and he's lanky, so they end up having having
to fight at a distance that I think is a
little bit difficult for them. That's what you're noticing. But
if you can make him miss, which does not appear
that hard necessarily for elite fighters, oh my god, dude,
he's there to be feasted on.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
He has his his.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
Positioning is terrible. It's terrible. It really is like I
hate I like the guy, don't get me wrong. And
I started this conversation by advocating that, you know, depending
on how things go, I would like to see him
be the title shot over Imavov, which I still hold to.
But there were so many times I was like, dude,
Whittaker engaged with this fucking guy, you can light him up.
And he did briefly obviously, but well.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
It speaks to the high level experience he got at
one championship. We know the two losses, but at a
higher way class to Mallikin. He was a two division champion.
That all lines up, but maybe the fact that he's
fighting so actively for fights in eight and a half
months that like people aren't as up on him. This
is a hard guy to pick up. He's also got
enormous size. He's also got an enormous gas tank. I mean,
(20:58):
he really answered eight of questions in this fight. Yet
when they went to the score cards, I really felt
ultimately I scored at three rounds to two for RDR,
but I felt like it could have gone either way
when those scorecards were read. Do you did you feel
like there was an argument for Whittaker.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
Yeah, I thought Whittaker might have edged it. Look at
these score cards here, so all three are consistent that
Whittaker won the first. All three are consistent. De Ritter
won the second.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
I gave Ridda the second.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
All three are consistent that Whittaker won the third, which
I think is the right call.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
And that's the wild round where de Rittter was dominating,
but then he got knocked down with that right hand,
and then he had success after that as well.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
And all three are consistent that Deritter won the fifth.
It's round four where you have a little bit of
change there.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
Between two, four or five. Deritter, what did you score
for Whittaker there.
Speaker 1 (21:43):
Whitaker, I had one three.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
Four. I think I would not have cried foul if
Whittaker won that, and it'd be an entirely different scenario
right now. And certainly I don't there's no there's no
rigging here.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
I mean, but the way, I don't think it's any
scandal like when like yeah or anything.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
But it was refreshing to see a new player in
the mix, even if it comes at the expense of
one of my favorite fighters of all time, a living legend.
It was refreshing to see this new guy on the
scene who has this demeanor. Now as like, this cool
guy that doesn't take anything personally, doesn't seem to put
a lot of pressure on himself, is obviously training his
balls off. Do you still feel like, how much did
(22:20):
this Whitaker fight do to increase the fuel of the
idea that any given night this guy could be the
next champion.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
I wouldn't say that that's what that taught me. I
did not look at that and think, oh he can.
Here's what it taught me. A fight between him and DDP,
And I mean this quite affectionately might be the goofiest
fight of all time, right because it's two guys who.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
Be in there with ben Askrin and Maya by the way,
which was the grossest striking we've ever seen. But I
don't mean it like that.
Speaker 1 (22:49):
I actually I actually mean like you might get a
lot of potent offense in either direction, but both guys
tend to have these really weird styles where the thing
that they do don't line up a lot of times
with what we would call textbook skill or textbook technical application,
and yet the results speak for themselves. I mean, there's
(23:11):
an argument to be made. We'll see what happens with
Morob against Corey Sandhagen, and if he wins it, I
think he's really locking it up. But RDR is in
play here for Fighter of the Year with the way
he's going. The year is still young. He hasn't locked
it up, but he's on I mean you mentioned the
hot hand, he's on the hottest hands. So like to
your point, there's a certain level of unpredictability, there's a
(23:32):
certain level of that they break the rules, and yet
there is a clear expectation and deliverance on winning and
offense and applicability. So like my point is that fight
was the one I like. The reason why I want
to see the fight is because if Hamza wins, I
think that RDR might get overwhelmed, but because he's good
(23:53):
on the ground, it would make it interesting. Sure, the
DDP fight to me against RDR is interesting because it
would be so outrageously weird. That Dudema mma is built
off the backs of weirdness. People think it's built off
the backs of wanton violence, and it is, but it's
also built off the back of just insanity.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
I mean, guys our age who got into the sport
in the midst of their early run in the nineties,
got into it for the insanity of we get to
watch a real street fight happened in front of them. Yeah,
but also like, no, that's the selling point for you, right,
That's how you got in sort of is you didn't
get in under this while I love Jesudes, No, you're
some punk kid listening to grunge music and you're like,
they're gonna Actually was the opposite.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
I had a friend who was a martial arts instructor
came to the house and said, you guys, see what
this Brazilian guy is doing.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
I really did backdoor this. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (24:37):
So so the what I'm trying to make is the
you don't get an opportunity to put a DDP and
an RDR together very often, particularly for a UFC title
at the same time. Sure, and for that reason, that's
to me, like we need more unique moments. There's so
much of MMA that just blends together. There's so much
of MMA this becomes gray and monotone, and RDR is
(25:01):
for all his faults, full of color. DDP for all
of his faults is full of color. And you white
guys just you know, I'm saying in a metaphorical sense
obviously fuck face, and so when you put them together
you get something weirdly magical.
Speaker 2 (25:17):
That's kind of what I RDR is, kind of delightfully weird.
We do have the streaking middleweight talking about what could
be next for him. Let's listen.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
In just said I want to thirty days of lying
on the beach eating barbecue in Florida. It's just rid
of the axing. That's what I want feel now. Just
my kids laid down for a while and then choked
treekas and hums out of dude.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
Can you can you mute that and show him one
more time? Or if that's possible or not? Is that possible?
Speaker 2 (25:46):
Dude?
Speaker 1 (25:47):
Why are you wearing the headphones over your fucking forehead?
What is that? He's wearing it like a nineteen.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
Twenties it's probably too he doesn't realize that you can stretch.
I don't know, but he does seem like an intelligent
man despite that performance right there. We also have r
DR talking about how close this fight with Whitaker was
and whether he thinks the scores were in line with
what we saw. How confident were you when they were
announcing the scorecard?
Speaker 6 (26:16):
That you won.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
I thought I was surprised that one judge scored it
like completely wrong. I thought I had three rounds at least.
But yeah, it is what it is. I shouldn't. I
hope to finish him, and I didn't, So you never
know what the judges make of it. But I'll be
sure to finish the next guy. Again.
Speaker 5 (26:39):
Which round did you think the three rounds that you won?
Speaker 2 (26:42):
In your opinion, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
I gotta watch his back, but at least the last
two rounds, right, maybe the second as well. I got
on top of a couple of times. I heard him
a couple of times with the knee. But this guy
is a tough guy. He was hard to put away.
He did amazing. I think I said it a couple
times already, but one of the best robs I've seen
(27:04):
in years. You're so calm, collected, very explosive. Yeah, it's
hard work. It's see what happens. There's a lot going
on in the middleweight division the next couple of weeks.
As you said, I'm I'm a top five fighter in
the world. Man, that's crazy. Who can say that year?
(27:26):
By the way, in one year? Yeah, and I think
I have a good chance fighting for a title some
day soon, so we'll see.
Speaker 7 (27:34):
In one of his interviews, Absati might have said that
he is going to give ten thousand dollars for anyone
who can submit him in training. Do you think you
would be able to do this?
Speaker 3 (27:44):
I hope to submit him and make a little bit
more than ten thousand dollars in the cage.
Speaker 7 (27:49):
If all of a sudden you see tells you do
you want to be a backup fighter for the championship fight,
would you consider.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
I'm gonna if once I heard here it is, I'm
going to take a full day in the ice bat,
recover from this, get in the HYPERBADCT the next day,
and then I'll be ready to go.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
There'll be too much of a company guy right there, Luke.
If it really did come down to be our dr or,
I know he's got it well the winner of Kyle Barrajo.
But ohio, oh, I have an update on this versus off,
excuse me, mov off. Then I think he would RDR
would win this. But is there any other scenario, like,
(28:31):
is there anyone else? What if does CHAMAIAV potentially win
the title, change this path and bring somebody else back in.
What I'm basically asking you is, if he doesn't get
the title shot next, should he sit out and wait
considering he just fought four times in eight months, or
is there another top middleweight that we could see him
against the not a Sogna or Strickland or something like that.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
Yeah, I mean those two names apparently, as he has
been calling out Strickland, who doesn't want it. Also Strickland,
as I understand it, now suspended at least for a little.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
While by the Las Vegas Commission, by Nevadicadematicmissions.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
I understand it. So I don't know how long that's
going to last. People be like, oh, you can just
fight somewhere else. No, you can't. If you're suspended in
Las Vegas, they are absolutely not going to book you
anywhere else. It's called reciprocal.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Yeah, sure, John Jones, they won't move you during Christmas week.
Speaker 1 (29:12):
But he wasn't suspended, get it. They just didn't know
what to do with him. It's a bit different anyway.
So there are other scenarios, but it just feels like
Imovov would get the NOD only if they had some
interest in taking him back to France, or if his
win is like uniquely amazing. Hen yeah, exactly in that case,
but because you know, obviously Rdyr did not get the
(29:33):
win or the finish excuse me. But short of that,
I think rdy rs and I think he's in, you know,
a good position here?
Speaker 3 (29:39):
Does it?
Speaker 4 (29:40):
Roman Delede have a big fighting I don't think he's
fighting Fluffy Hernandez not this weekend.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
Okay, but they're Fluffy is still technically in the winner's bracket.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
Right, yeah, but he's sub top He's in the top ten,
not top five.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
I'm still a further way back yet.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
So I have an update on Rinaldo Ronaldo I got.
I got a clarification on this.
Speaker 2 (29:58):
What the hell are we talking about here?
Speaker 1 (29:59):
Because you mentioned Bohelio and how you couldn't pronounce his name.
Speaker 2 (30:01):
I never can pronounce his name, and yeah, I can't
do it.
Speaker 1 (30:04):
It's like it's a mental block. I got an answer
to this from the Portuguese because I asked, like a
bunch of people.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
I knew you'd do this, Okay, I asked a.
Speaker 1 (30:12):
Bunch of them. Okay, so here's what we're misunderstanding. What
they told me was the Brazilians they do take the
R and pronounce it like we would take the H
or the two r's in the middle and like an
H about a hard R. Yes, so listen to me.
So it's hoist. It's hoist Gracie or not Ferrera, but fajta.
But what they said they do is something a little
(30:33):
bit different to them. They don't really consider it an H.
What they say is they quote curl the R, so
it's a in between an R and an H. Still
an R just slightly muted in that way so it
sounds like an H. But they actually say it's more
like what the French would say. There are is in
(30:54):
the back of the throat. Congratulations, there's your answer.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
I don't put anything. I want you to know that
except except five. Once I've seen you before we speak
on what could be next in Robert Whitaker's future. Please
put the camera on me, because now is a good
time as any to remember where Tequila's story truly began.
Let me take you back to seventeen ninety five. That's
I don't know when Quervo invented tequila. Since then, Quervo
(31:20):
has stayed true to his root, its roots. We're talking
the same family, the same land, that same passion on
top of it. Two hundred and thirty years later, folks,
Cuervo was still here. Okay, and every poor and every
margarita in every celebration. So enjoy the tequila that started
at all Quervo, the tequila that invented tequila Proximo Quervo
(31:41):
dot com. Please drink responsibly. Luke Thomas Quervo, the sponsor
of our rousing pregame preview UFC pay per view series.
We just had a great one three eighteen with Jed meshu.
Mm hm, who do you think we should have as
the third man coming up this August ahead of three nineteen?
Speaker 1 (31:59):
Sophia Virgo?
Speaker 2 (32:00):
Wow?
Speaker 1 (32:01):
Can we book her? We should just, you know, we
should do We should just book a porn star and
then just have her help help preview the fights. Yeah.
I don't, Yeah, I don't like asa. Okay, I'll just
leave it alone.
Speaker 2 (32:14):
I mean I would have questions though, for all right,
nothing this, okay, let's get back to it. Let's get back.
Speaker 1 (32:21):
I think the sponsors would really like it if we
brought in sex workers to do UFC previews.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
They would like that a lot. Transitioning here to topic
number two, and we're talking about Robert Whittaker, he has
had an exemplary career, and again three different judges there
on Saturday, he could be winning this and we could
be talking about where he fits in in this title picture. Instead,
we've got four losses in seven fights, all of course
against top level competition, which is a big part of
(32:48):
our dr breaking through and we're going to find out
if he is title ready. Tough conversation to have, because
he damn near won it. But is it true to
say here, Luke that the living legend, the Reaper, Robert
Whitaker's best days are behind him. If so, what would
be the evidence for that? And what do you think
is left that should keep him in MMA or UFC
(33:11):
in general? While he still got it, But his repeated
times to get back to the top, the door continues
to get closed on.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
I do think his best days are behind him. To
the point that we discussed earlier, he did not look
terrible to me at all. I know folks have said, ah,
he looks diminished in terms of his ability to take
a punch, but I don't know if he's ever really
had a great chin. He's had great resiliency, yes, which
is very different than the ability to just take a
shot and nothing happens to you. But I think a
(33:43):
couple of things are happening here. He is thirty four
years of age BC. This is the second time in
his career that he's lost back to back fights. The
first time was when he lost to Courtmuguee and WonderBoy,
which ultimately pushed him into middleweight. Those were back at
a time when he was at welterweight. But there's really
nowhere else for him him to go.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
Well here, John Jones at light heavyweight to fulfill your
longtime fantasy.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
I think the time on that one has expired. It
was a brilliant idea for its moment.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
I mean, it helps when he's in there with our
dr who's a giant, but he looks really small in there.
On top of it, he's always been He's always just
been this.
Speaker 1 (34:14):
He's been undersized. You look particularly undersized in this moment.
But the issue for me was that, yes, he doesn't
necessarily take a punch well, but he does have decent resiliency.
He looked to me like he was just kind of
out of ideas. He didn't really know how to overcome.
And this is a guy who during his peak had
the ability to diagnose what the problem was and then
(34:36):
effectuate a solution. He couldn't do that here. To me,
whenever that happens, that means the game is passing you by.
That's always what that means. You can't if you can,
if you can't really figure out a way to get
around a problem. And he also didn't have the motor
to do it. To be fair, now, he was getting
kneed up the gut consistently.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
I'm not saying he didn't undertrain to whatever I'm saying.
When we hit round four, he was kind of dune.
You kind of need the young legs in that extra
gear to pull yourself to a position where then you
could figure.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
Out how to write. To the point, he might have
actually known what the solution was and then couldn't physically
labor his way into it. So either he couldn't diagnose
it and couldn't deliver, or he could but he couldn't
deliver it. But either way way, he's not the same
exactly right, it's half a dozen one way, it's six
the other.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
So like, but we love him, we don't want to
see him be a gate keeper, well even an elite gatekeeper.
Which is kind of where he is right now.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
Well, this is where he's headed. This is exactly where
he's headed now. I suppose b SE could he effort?
And I'm not recommending it. I'm not recommending it. I
don't want it. Is it possible that he entertains a
return to welterweight as a consequence.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
Wouldn't it feel like our great friend sugar Shot Evans
when he went down to middleweight. It would kind of
feel like that, like it's this desperate late move. I mean,
he's determined enough to pull it off, but the welterweight
pool is even deeper.
Speaker 1 (35:56):
Filled the show. I totally agree. And also I know
what folks might say. They'd say, oh, he's only thirty four,
he's the same age as RDR, but RDR clearly has
less miles on him. He's a newer entrant, he's a
newer problem to the division. Like the best work. We
talked about this with Max Holloway. Max Holloway's peak came
at a time, but he's still I would argue, argue
doing his best work not achieving the same heights because
(36:18):
the game is different now. But he's better now. What
occur is not better now, No, I think it's a hard.
Speaker 2 (36:24):
Hill returns and more damage on top of there if
he stays. I think like I'm speaking for a man's
life without knowing you know, his situation, but at his
age and considering he's still got a pretty damn good amount.
But it we're seeing what happens when you meet the
very top of the division. Like him to take that
one to two years off. I'd like for him to
even publicly announce the retirement, but no, in the back
of his head, let me really let myself heal mentally physically,
(36:46):
and see do I want Is there a reason that
I want want one more run at this as of
right now? To just go back in line. It doesn't
he's see, he's too regal for that. In some way,
he's too good for that to have him fall into that.
But it also happens often, Luke, So what's let's hear
from him, then maybe we can kind of gauge where
he's at. This was him speaking after the loss about
the defeat a quote tweet here, I'm pretty butt hurt,
(37:08):
to be honest, that's interesting use of slaying there. He
did what he said he was going to do. I
thought I ticked all the boxes, but his pressure was
a lot. Yeah, it's kind of It's it's even though
that was a really large opponent on a hot streak
who was determined and was awkward all that stuff, it's
still where we're at. I'd like to see this guy
(37:29):
step away.
Speaker 1 (37:30):
There are big fights left for him. I mean, this
is the problem we've.
Speaker 2 (37:33):
Taken out of Sign of trilogy any day because I
thought he won the second one.
Speaker 1 (37:35):
Okay, he didn't, but the reality, I mean, is there
much of an appetite for that?
Speaker 2 (37:41):
Though?
Speaker 1 (37:41):
No, wouldn't you rather see, for example, what's your level
of interest in Whittaker Strickland.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
I mean, I wouldn't hate it, But we're still having
the same conversation we just had.
Speaker 1 (37:53):
Okay, but you have a case there where like Strickland's
gonna beat him up real bad. I mean, Strickland might win.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
Are you doing the whole like, what are you gonna do?
Point fight me bit?
Speaker 1 (38:02):
No, I'm saying like, you can give him big fights
where you're not risking him getting thrashed. But he could lose,
but he wouldn't necessarily get thrashed. And this at this age,
isn't that something that you would want to see.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
You can get volume punch to complete the joke. Yeah,
I get it. I hear what you're saying. But does
it would a win put him back? Do you think
he's earned the sort of thing where he's as long
as he's active and can still be the guy like
Striclan who's coming down. It seems from the top that
he's still a phone call away to get a title
shot if needed.
Speaker 1 (38:32):
No, I think that point passed.
Speaker 2 (38:33):
Then why keep going? Is my question? Because that's not
a big enough fight where it's like, Okay, well you
got that lottery ticket left in your pocket. It's not
Connor Nate three, right, So it's not like something that
you say, well, maybe we can do this one more time.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
I don't know what kind of financial planning he's done.
I don't know what his plan is for after fighting.
I don't know what I don't know what any of
that looks like. If he has a decent plan in place,
I think now it's time to hit the parachute. Yeah,
because here's what happens after this. He'll win some big fights,
he'll make some decent money, but he's this right now.
(39:07):
And the Humsaut fight was kind of a prelude to this.
Now that was a pre existing kind of thing, so
people are going to dismiss it. What happens after this
is it's not automatic losses. That's not my point at all.
But it will be more losses than wins because they're
going to give him big names, and they're going to
give him up and coming names. They're going to try
and feed him to. And this is where the terrible
injuries start to happen in the octagon. This is right
(39:29):
here where somebody breaks a jaw, where an acl gets
torn and you lose the fight on top of it.
This is where the problems begin to emerge. So to
the point raised previously about.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
Who he is, you're on the verge of being like
I think came Falescas would fuck you up, Like this
is one of those stuff of talks, right, No, I mean,
what are we doing?
Speaker 1 (39:47):
Okay, we're doing skits some bits here.
Speaker 2 (39:49):
You have that tone and that was like I was
feeling the moment. It kind of reminded me of.
Speaker 1 (39:52):
Well, here's who is again. These rankings will change the
here's who's ranked below him before incorporating Saturday's results. Six
is Kyle Bohala seven Cannoneer. Do you want to see
Whittaker cannon ear? I don't have much of an interest
in that.
Speaker 2 (40:04):
I actually would see that again because Cannon nearly.
Speaker 1 (40:06):
You have a heart on for cannon Ear always.
Speaker 5 (40:09):
Did Cannoneer break his arm in their first fight?
Speaker 2 (40:11):
Yes, Andrew and and badly hurt Whitaker around three but recovered.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
Yeah, I don't have much of an interest in the remam,
but I'm good, I mean finished. Eight is de ledes
A nine, Hernandez ten, Brendan Allen eleven, Paulo Costa. We
already saw that one. Marvin Vttori were neared. De Ritter
obviously just beat him, and then U a bus Magna
madeoff and then Rollman Copulaf who fought like ship by
the way at UC three eighteen.
Speaker 2 (40:35):
Okay, so we just answered our question. The answer is
Shara bullet really really seriously, like if you want to
keep fighting, that's kind of the perfect That's where you're
at with That's where you're.
Speaker 1 (40:42):
At with this.
Speaker 2 (40:43):
We do have Whittaker's resume to pump up, and if
he did never fight again, I call been calling him
a living legend for years, a guy that only had
one rain and it wasn't that long. He showed top
level quality thout his entire career. Luke, I had played
this on Friday, but it looks like, let's look at
it one more. These are the names that he shared
a cage with, didn't win them all. You certainly can
see the wonder Boy lost at well To.
Speaker 1 (41:03):
I thought the very best that his generation had to offer.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
Ten rounds with a prime dangerous l Ramero, ten rounds.
Speaker 1 (41:10):
Ten that took miles off of his fucking.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
And then that comeback run where he went through cannoneer
you know, and got hurt in that fight and wanted Vittori.
Is never an easy fight in terms of the durability there.
Fought brunts and fought Tavares, brought Jock Ray Till Gastolon,
paul A Costa the title level twice without a Sonia.
It's tough because I always assumed he would get back
and win it again.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
I always assume that, dude, once that title gets separated
from you, it is very very rare that you can
reconnect with it.
Speaker 2 (41:39):
I mean, Juliana Pana is one story, right, I mean, seriously,
so is Cookie Monster as Barza. Like that's kind of
rare that that happens.
Speaker 1 (41:46):
Okay, put you know what the fuck I'm no.
Speaker 3 (41:48):
I'm not.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
I'm not dunking on them. I'm just saying there's different
levels to this, but some great fighters just never get back.
Speaker 1 (41:53):
Yeah, in a competitive division, once you lose a reasonably
competitive anyway, not that middleweight is like the most competitive,
but you know, reasonably competitive once you lose the belt.
It's I mean, that's why even Izzy who got it
back then lost it again very quickly. Right, it's just very,
very very Your reign at the top is short. Like
leprechauns man what it is?
Speaker 2 (42:14):
Unforgiving sport of the most unforgivings and combat sports. This
one's really unforgiving. I mean boxing too, but boxing it's
like the long term damage. This is like the show.
Speaker 1 (42:23):
I would say slap fighting is pretty unforgiving, but it's not.
No one cares about it, so it's different.
Speaker 2 (42:28):
No, actually, uh well no, where are they on now? YouTube?
They're down to YouTube? Bro, I could put my balls
on YouTube. What are they? What is slap down to
for a TV deal? Ts?
Speaker 1 (42:39):
Yeah? Yeah, I think it's on YouTube?
Speaker 2 (42:41):
Truth social next. It'd be awesome. That'd be fantastic. Let's
go to topic number three Telegram. We're looking at the
co main event on Saturday's card, which saw former bandamweight
champion Pyotr Jan restore that image. A tough fight at
times against a thirty five year old but streaking Marcus
mcg just from the standpoint that McGee did land a
(43:02):
few big shots. But this is three straight wins here
for Jan, who is very much at age thirty two,
still looking like a dangerous out for any one thirty
five or with the three in the row, though, he's
got to be in consensus discussion to be next in
line for the winner of Corey Sanhagan's title shot against
Marob de vos Phili coming up right around the corner.
(43:22):
So that said, Luke, is there any reason to think
a fight with either Morob and Jan lost the first
time or Cory and he remember Yan beat san Haagen
in their meeting would look any different? So if he
caught the winner of this title fight to be a
rematch for him either way? Is how much do you
think has changed since the first time he fought those guys?
Speaker 1 (43:41):
Well, okay, I don't I don't know if anyone will
agree with me.
Speaker 2 (43:47):
On this. I mean, once I get my opinion on.
Speaker 1 (43:49):
I'd actually love to hear what Long Island Luke has
to say, because I think he probably represents a different demo.
Speaker 2 (43:54):
On this one, the Long Island demo, the Long Island.
Speaker 1 (43:56):
Demo, which is, you know, barely literate, but we love
them just the same. I see you, I see you.
Speaker 2 (44:03):
H okay.
Speaker 1 (44:05):
He looked great against Marcus McGhee. There were a lot
of questions about whether that was a suitable opponent for him,
and I thought McGhee had done some things to give
himself a bit of a boost and profile.
Speaker 2 (44:15):
Stay busy fight, he check on McGee.
Speaker 1 (44:17):
Stay busy, that's right, and you know it the kind
of thing where if you're slipping at all, McGee would
notice it. But Jon looked fantastic. For the most part,
he looked pretty great. Yon has a weird cult following
where his fans really love the way that he fights,
and by virtue of that overestimate how good he is.
Speaker 2 (44:37):
And they also love the way he talks. Seriously, he
gives cold.
Speaker 1 (44:41):
He gives great one landers. Let me explain what I
mean though, once again, how much of MMA just kind
of blends together where everyone is learning the same skills
and fighting with the same meta and doing all the
same things. It happens quite regularly, but in this particular case,
Yon has a very unique kind or not very but
a reasonably unique kind of style obc. Where he puts
interesting combinations and he has throws and trips and you know,
(45:05):
he just that one I think he hit like an
Osodo Gary and then goes right into that Uh no,
he hit the Yes, he hit the I think it
was Nosda Gary and then goes right into the Kemora
on Marcus McGee. He's got this very fun way of
doing that. But he's writing three decisions in a row.
McGee is a guy who you would have imagined if
you were if you believe that Yan is as good
as you as his cult would tell you that he is,
(45:27):
probably should have finished him. I think McGee's a good opponent.
Let me explain this, okay, So what is interesting about
Yan is he fights in a very i should say
again relatively speaking, a unique kind of way, and he
has put together enough quality wins where to me, no brainer,
he gets the title shot like of course, of course,
(45:47):
of course, But your question was do we expect it
to be different. I do not expect to fight against
Morob to be effectively different. I would expect Morob scored
fifty takedown She's attempted fifty takedowns on him forty nine
forty nine to be to be specific. Right, So even
(46:08):
if you have that right, let's just say twenty four, right,
because you can't do twenty four and a half. But
twenty four he's probably still gonna win. Also, Morob has
gotten better. The more interesting fight to me is not
that the more interesting fight is Yan versus Sandhagen two,
because sand Hagen actually.
Speaker 2 (46:28):
Has gotten a lot better. I feel like Yon too,
though I think you're okay.
Speaker 1 (46:32):
I don't think Joan's gotten effectively better.
Speaker 2 (46:34):
Okay, I'm not gonna argue with the fact that because
Morob is so unique and he's on such a hot run,
that it might look the same. I'll over again, it might.
I'm seeing a more calculated Yon without sacrificing the power,
the well roundedness, the explosion.
Speaker 1 (46:47):
That's why he's going to decisions all the time.
Speaker 2 (46:49):
Now, I know that, But isn't that a better isn't
that a better starting point to deal with Morob's spanning?
Speaker 1 (46:56):
That's good enough to get wins to a title shot.
It's not good enough to put you over the hump.
The more calculated way he's fighting is the thing that
is securing his title shot.
Speaker 2 (47:09):
It might also be the thing that catches Morob coming
in and disciplines. I don't think so. I would be
very surprised. I mean, I think he's got a better
chance of beating Sandagan, not just because he beat him already,
but I guess a style matchup in which his consistency
is well.
Speaker 1 (47:21):
To be clear, I would favor him in the Sanhagan fight,
but I'm saying Sanagan has made up enough ground now
where I'm like, Okay, are.
Speaker 2 (47:28):
You feeling yell after this fight? Because I'm feeling him.
Speaker 1 (47:30):
To get it. And then the stipulation is there's not
a question a long on Luke that he deserved the
title shot like that much is without debate. The question
is do you think you'd get a reasonably different fight
either in the Sanhagan case or in the Morob case.
Speaker 5 (47:42):
I think you nail that, Luke.
Speaker 4 (47:43):
I don't see it going any different with Morob, but
I could see it going different with Sanhagen.
Speaker 5 (47:47):
I could see it being a little closer. This time around. Also,
I tried to just google it quick. Am I making
this up? Didn't Sandhagen like haear is ACL or mcl.
Speaker 4 (47:56):
Or something against He did get injured, yes, I can't
remember from thinking that or the Dilla show fight they.
Speaker 1 (48:01):
Were Oh no, no, no, maybe it was the well
because Delashau got injured in that fight too.
Speaker 4 (48:05):
No, that might be what I'm thinking of getting injured.
Either way, I don't see them really going any different.
Speaker 2 (48:10):
I still see the ending being the same by decision,
but I see Yon being more dangerous and making it
a different fight. In the end, it's still the same thing.
But I'm not how can.
Speaker 1 (48:18):
You be more reserved and more dangerous.
Speaker 2 (48:21):
Because you're you're being more efficient at choosing the right moments.
Speaker 1 (48:23):
To be dangerous, you're also being more I feel like
you're also spending less in terms of offensive output.
Speaker 2 (48:30):
Right, But how can you to stay off he doesn't
want to be on his back as much as the
first fight. To stay off of it, you've got to
be more off the back foot and more in a
position to stop that.
Speaker 1 (48:38):
I mean, let me just be clear. The evidence is in.
You are not going to beat morob Holstering offense not
gonna fucking work. There's not a bantamweight alive. Corey stan
Haagen in Cline.
Speaker 2 (48:50):
Okay, But but the more aggressive Yan is, the easier
it is from Rob to take him down.
Speaker 1 (48:55):
True, but this is the problem with Morob. The issue
with Morob is that you kind of have to throw
I'm gonna say to the wind. But Corey Sanhagan to me,
I'm picking Morob to Until Morob gets beat, I'm not.
Speaker 2 (49:05):
Picking him with him, I'm still picking him to beat up.
Speaker 1 (49:07):
So let me just say this, until Marob gets beat,
I'm not picking against him. However, Sandagan has said something
I think is exactly correct in the lead up to
this fight, which is you're not gonna fucking beat this
guy by decision. They have to knock him out. You
have to submit him. Dude, How is he gonna make
it a boxing match? If Morob's not gonna let him.
Speaker 2 (49:26):
He won't be on his back as much. You'll see
a different Yannas what I'm saying, it's not gonna be
enough to win, but I'm saying that you're gonna see
him give himself a much better chance than the first fight.
Speaker 1 (49:33):
I think he'll make it where that's maturity. He's not
gonna get as run over as a consequence, but he's
also not gonna have as much high as a consequence
because he'll be so readide with those Russians.
Speaker 2 (49:43):
I'm gonna side with them on here.
Speaker 1 (49:44):
He's real, Sanhagen, san Hagen again, I'm not picking against
Morob until he loses. But Sandhagan's approach of I'm just
gonna go for the kill on this guy, I think
actually is gonna take you. The chance that that gives
you a win is higher than I'm gonna be careful
against Morob. Gonna be careful route to a unanimous decision loss.
Speaker 2 (50:03):
And that's what's gonna happen. Everyone is on their way
to decision loss. Let's see Yan react to the congratulary
treat tweets. That was a word from Morob, who wrote
great fight at peioder Yan Pyotr. Congratulations, thanks Morob, said
Yan in response, good luck in your next fight. Hopefully
it's me and you for the belt after I'm into that.
Where where's Umar fitting into this? Who's he?
Speaker 3 (50:24):
So?
Speaker 1 (50:25):
Umar has a fight coming up against too? They announced
it yesterday, long Islan Luke.
Speaker 2 (50:28):
Who was it?
Speaker 1 (50:29):
Oh yeah, no, is any is any fighting Mario Bautista?
Speaker 3 (50:33):
Did?
Speaker 2 (50:33):
Did Umar turned down a fight with Yan? Correct for
this past fight? It should have been Umar, but he
was hurt. He was hurt.
Speaker 1 (50:39):
As my understanding, I believe that they said he's I
believe I saw reports that saying he was fighting Mario
Bautista because I had someone send it to me, being like,
finally Umar is gonna beat this bump. People hate Mario Bautista.
Speaker 2 (50:51):
I don't what would you have?
Speaker 4 (50:53):
I got nothing, but uh, I'm trying to put make
that apology right now to see if he has.
Speaker 2 (50:57):
A rumored bat Can you play the tape here of
Pyotr agreeing with me that the Morab rematch will be there?
Speaker 6 (51:03):
Do you have a preference on who you would rather
win between Rob and Corey?
Speaker 3 (51:06):
Obviously you have a win over Corey and you'd like
to avenge the loss.
Speaker 8 (51:09):
To Mob I Gotshini. Yeah, obviously I prefer to rematch
me up, you know, to see how I'll do against
him when I'm healthy. But Corey is also a great fighter,
interesting fighter, had a great fight with him, and.
Speaker 1 (51:25):
I believe they're going to have a good fight.
Speaker 8 (51:27):
But I just believes pressure and I'm gonna be a
key factor. You know, at some point Corey is gonna fade.
Speaker 2 (51:34):
You're now close again to a title shot. If not
your next what would you do different? Let's say Morob
is the next sport?
Speaker 8 (51:43):
Yeah, first of all, I want to show up healthy
and now I understand that how I have to digest
my fight came and prepare better.
Speaker 2 (51:51):
For me up. You know, now, now I know what
to expect from him. I'm telling you, Luke, I'm telling
you so is Pyotre. Yeah, he gotta have that first
fight you're going to see in this remat. It's gonna
be a little bit different. It's still gonna lose. So
I'm not putting that much out into the world off
like this.
Speaker 1 (52:07):
You know what, then, what is the point of like
being I don't understand the nature of your argument. Oh,
it'll be different and he'll still lose. Well, who gives
a fuck?
Speaker 2 (52:15):
Well people that care about m No, No, I don't believe.
I don't believe that.
Speaker 1 (52:18):
I think you should have if you're going to argue that,
they're like you have enthusiasm.
Speaker 2 (52:22):
I think it's gonna be a great fight, that's going
to be close. But I think Morob just finds a
way out working in the end.
Speaker 1 (52:28):
I don't I don't understand how you can threaten Morob
w holsterring offense. I just don't understand that argument.
Speaker 2 (52:35):
But you gotta win three rounds against So that's the doing.
Speaker 1 (52:37):
What motherfucker doing what First, You've got to put it
on Hairst.
Speaker 2 (52:41):
Thing you have to do is dissuade him for taking
you down easily. So that's the first thing you have
to do. I think you also slow the pace down
and allow the offensive skirmishes to happen when it's an
advantageous position.
Speaker 1 (52:51):
For you that he's going to disaster.
Speaker 2 (52:57):
It changes. If you can give Morob caution on shooting
at will, then it changes. You have to do that.
Speaker 1 (53:01):
First, and who has done who has done that whole.
Speaker 2 (53:04):
Story Now, I'm saying, but now you got yan say
but he was hurt the first fight. I know everyone's hurt,
But I'm saying, like, now he's looking at as. I
got to come in with a different plan, different mindset.
You're going to get a tougher challenge and you got
the first fight. That's basically what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (53:15):
I think you might get a somewhat closer fight. I
don't think you actually get a tougher challenge. You're telling
me that Yan can do less and get more, and
I simply don't fucking believe that. Not against Morob, maybe
against other guys, not against Mob, no chance.
Speaker 2 (53:32):
Okay, we'll see when they when they fight. I mean,
things have to happen first.
Speaker 1 (53:35):
And also like what if he comes out and fights
balls out, in which case different story. But I'm under
under the premise of what you're saying.
Speaker 2 (53:41):
All right, the crowd on Saturday in Abu Dabu, they
started filing out, which is kind of becoming a trend
on foreign markets. We flashed back, of course to Ozer
by Jean Baku, where they they just walked out like
hell during that main event. David Shaw, the North America
or the international mouthpiece of the UFC, who ever really
(54:05):
has answers to things, was sort of like Dana promoted
the shit out of this. It was matched properly. Blah
blah blah. They're not going to change anything, is what
he's saying. What do you make of, though, of the
of the crowd being so kind of regional centered, right,
like they want the fights, they want their certain fighters,
or are they just not have interest in the matchup
in this manner.
Speaker 1 (54:25):
I mean, I just think it's like, dude, the way,
clearly the way the UFC puts their business together works
for their interest. There's really not a lot of argument
against that. But it's the if you're having guys, or
I should say, if you're having multiple cities where the
people are filing out before the event is concluded, despite
the fact that like that main event was great and
(54:46):
it was the two biggest names on the card, right,
I mean, I guess you could say, yan, maybe it
was a bit I mean not even really that, But.
Speaker 2 (54:51):
Is the answer to your question the same thing of
why would only thirty five hundred people show up to
Canelo fighting in Saudi?
Speaker 1 (54:59):
Yeah, it's just it's just also like the reality is
if you're going to construct your business in the way
that they are constructing it, where they're going to these
foreign governments for money, and then they're putting these fights
in places that I wouldn't.
Speaker 2 (55:09):
Be like, they're not HotBits, they're not HotBits.
Speaker 1 (55:12):
And also like more to the point, if you were
really trying to maximize a hot audience, where would you
take that fight? You take it to Australia, you take
it to the Netherlands right period, you're opposons, you could
go but to those places and they're not doing that,
and so there's just not as much audience investment as
a consequence.
Speaker 2 (55:28):
For those reasons.
Speaker 1 (55:29):
I think the UFC is probably like, well, we still
made a good fight, which they did, and if that happens,
it happens. It's just a little weird that's happening. Like
the Baku one was different to me because I did
that one air on linear TV?
Speaker 2 (55:40):
Or was that strictly I think it did air.
Speaker 1 (55:42):
On linear TV rights, So like they're putting fights on ABC,
you know, on network television where the audience is filing out,
and I'm like, I don't quite understand the value of
that part.
Speaker 2 (55:54):
Well, they're prioritizing the site fee obviously that they're getting
and not.
Speaker 1 (55:57):
I get it. It's the way they organize their business.
But like there's there's leak in the system, and one
of the leaks is the audience is like on TV,
but on in attendance, we don't give a fuck about
your main events, so.
Speaker 2 (56:07):
They still cashing them checks. What'd you make of middleweight
shar bullet bouncing back from the loss to MVP that
stopped his string, getting a thirty to twenty seven unanimous
across the board decision over a toughest shit Mark Andre Barrio,
but also like getting his nose popped and you knew
that dude was in surgery at the end. In terms
of the scoring, he dominated. He also got fucked up
(56:27):
at Churtin points in that FCE.
Speaker 1 (56:28):
Once again, the pirate gimmick is the lamest gimmick in
all of fights. R Maybe welcome to our medieval times.
I'm putting two together here. It's just, I mean, there's
nothing cool about a pirate that it never has been,
never will.
Speaker 2 (56:40):
Come on when Johnny Depp re reinvigorated pirratism, You've got.
Speaker 1 (56:43):
To can I tell you, I've never seen a single
Pirates of the Caribbean.
Speaker 2 (56:46):
It doesn't surprise me you would make a hardened opinion
on something.
Speaker 1 (56:50):
Who's the coolest pirate in history? The guy who took
Tom Hanks's fucking thing. I'm the captain now, that motherfucker.
I like that guy that goes all right, that was
pretty hard anyway, what I'm trying to make it.
Speaker 2 (57:00):
Bobby Bonilla and Barry Bonds pretty good. Okay, where's the
horn asshole one.
Speaker 5 (57:08):
Having a separate conversation.
Speaker 2 (57:09):
It's not his fault. He was bored before nineteen ninety eight.
Speaker 1 (57:12):
I guess the point I would say is there's another
one of these guys where there's a lot of hype
around charl Bullet, but.
Speaker 2 (57:18):
Like and he's clearly good. He's clearly good.
Speaker 1 (57:20):
He's not great and this is this is this is
the gap that you're noticing where he's not able to
get over the hump.
Speaker 2 (57:26):
He can still win.
Speaker 1 (57:27):
It can be good guys, but he's not like he's
like Hamzad just fucking tearing through the division.
Speaker 2 (57:32):
He's not that or not like light heavyweight bugged in
Guskov at least on Saturday. Well, you know what in
that first round demolition of Nikita Krilov forty sorry, in
the final minute of the first round, eight brutal finished.
Speaker 1 (57:46):
I mean Krilov just throwing naked kicks constantly and then
he gets timed with one. You know, I don't know
what to say, like, you know.
Speaker 2 (57:55):
But this is this for real? Is this who he is?
Speaker 1 (57:57):
I say, I'll say this, you know what, I'll pair it?
Speaker 2 (58:01):
What? Uh? What? What?
Speaker 1 (58:02):
Online analyst Jack Slack had to say, he's not good,
but he's definitely light heavyweight good. And that's good enough
for now.
Speaker 2 (58:08):
Four straight victories all by stoppage. Yeah, not against killers,
but a Ryan Span a Kree Love. That doesn't suck. Listen.
Speaker 1 (58:16):
He's beaten the guys they put in front of him,
and you can't say it hasn't been a little bit
of fun.
Speaker 2 (58:20):
He got subbed by no time Ozdemir in his last defeat.
Good though, had a four fight win streak before that.
So he's got to break through that.
Speaker 1 (58:26):
Yeah, exactly, he's got to break through the next ceiling.
But you know, theirs good. That's not that's not the
the worst laws ever.
Speaker 2 (58:31):
All Right. We're getting a lot of talk about the
officiating in the second fight of the evening on the prelimbs,
the featherweight bout between Steve Nuinn and Mohammed Yah Yah
Luke Jeff referee Jason Herzog, who yes, broke the rib
of Roschmarkozy at that time with that right referee referee
symposium thing. Yeah, okay, should he have stopped that fight earlier? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (58:52):
He sure was on fire over this, Yeah he should have.
I really hated that.
Speaker 2 (58:56):
What are we doing here? I mean, what are we doing?
Speaker 1 (58:58):
And this is to say nothing of like the trauma
that his brain took. People were like, oh, should there
be like a knockdown rule. No, there shouldn't be a
knockdown rule because I can imagine getting clipped and then
losing your balance, not like from like oh my head hurts,
but from the map being slippery or something like that.
Speaker 2 (59:14):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (59:14):
We don't need a formal knockdown rule.
Speaker 2 (59:16):
Bute.
Speaker 1 (59:16):
By the fourth one, I was like, dude, what the
fuck are we doing?
Speaker 2 (59:19):
There?
Speaker 1 (59:20):
Seven knockdowns in this six in the first round, I believe,
and then one in the second round.
Speaker 2 (59:24):
After he had that alien grow on his eye. They
kept it herzog let it go, Let it go, Let
it go.
Speaker 1 (59:30):
And then he did rock Steve Win, which people are like, oh,
that's it's great. It's sort of the interesting narrative there.
But dude, the amount of damage you take under repeated
knockdowns like that also like the kind of thing that
that signals is your defensive unpreparedness for the task at hand. Yes,
that should have been stopped inside the first round.
Speaker 2 (59:49):
I hated that.
Speaker 1 (59:50):
Lack of a stoppage and I've been very We've been
critical of Jason Herzog more recently than we have in
a very long time. Is that my imagination. It feels
like he's come up on you know that for example,
like in Henry Sujudo's about with the with the ipokes
and how he handled that in this case. And I
think it's been some other ones recently. Herzog has for
a very long time been one of my favorite referees.
(01:00:11):
It feels like in the last year or so, he's
made a series of decisions or lack of decisions that
have made me I just love it.
Speaker 2 (01:00:18):
I didn't love it. Even Herb has been like that lately.
You think that's when we going on longer, a lot longer.
He declined.
Speaker 1 (01:00:25):
Herb is not incapable of making good decisions. He still
has stoppages where I'm like, that's a great call, but
they're just inconsistent.
Speaker 2 (01:00:32):
Who is the best right now? Mark Goddard or that
dude that took the point away in that fight?
Speaker 1 (01:00:38):
Mark Goddard's pretty good? Oh who was good in the
Who was the Tabitha Ricci? And uh it was it?
Dan Movahetti.
Speaker 2 (01:00:46):
Yes, he's been climbing.
Speaker 1 (01:00:47):
Dan Ovahetti broke them up when that position stalled, I
think in the first round, and I was like, thank you,
Dan Movahetti.
Speaker 2 (01:00:54):
You were the Leo Leonardo DiCaprio meme. That's what. Yeah,
that guy.
Speaker 1 (01:00:58):
I was like, thank you for fucking doing that.
Speaker 2 (01:01:00):
So can we give props to forty one year old
welterweight Muslim Salikov, who had his third straight win, his
second by stoppage, and Islam was going, wow, I mean, look,
we're doing a live show here. I mean it's you know,
is sorry, Yeah, you're you're banging and tinging over there.
I mean, just be like my mom just turned the volume,
the ringer volume.
Speaker 1 (01:01:20):
I've I've often said if your phone audibly rings, you
deserve to be defenestrated. Yes, out of a.
Speaker 2 (01:01:27):
It was kind of it was powerful was against Carlos Leal.
It was in the first round. I know, this guy
isn't gonna be fighting for a title next to welterway,
but he looked like a killer.
Speaker 1 (01:01:34):
In this dude, carl l He's got another one of
these guys, got like a slightly weird cult following him
because he did get hosed in his last fight against
Renette fort For Krittonov. But dude, I want you to
pay attention the shot that Muslim Salakov stops him with
when he comes down then goes over the top is
real nice. However, I make this point all the time
because I see it on tape study and it drives
me fucking crazy. Pay attention to how many MMA fighters,
(01:02:00):
particularly in the UFC, get stopped as they are directly
squarely in front of their opponent. Being square with your
opponent isn't always bad. In fact, sometimes it can be necessary. Sure,
But if you're starting bladed and then you're winging shots,
and then you're bringing your back foot to come and
now face your opponent.
Speaker 2 (01:02:18):
As David Benavitez, you can't do.
Speaker 1 (01:02:19):
That unless your David motherfucking Benavidez.
Speaker 2 (01:02:22):
Stop fucking doing that.
Speaker 1 (01:02:25):
They so many fight and they get fucking hammered for
it by anybody with a competent trucking game. Muslim salakoff
in his forties, but he a target of opportunity, he'll
take it. Yeah, Oh my god, I hated that fucking
performance of carls Leo.
Speaker 2 (01:02:39):
And our featured prelim. In his first fight at bantamweight,
Bryce Mitchell got the win in a very hard fought
grappling match against sid nermalga Metov, in which Bryce would
ultimately say afterwards was the hardest fight of his career.
Let's let's hear Bryce's postfight comments.
Speaker 6 (01:02:54):
Yeah, dude, it was just really really hard fight, and
I wish it would have been more exciting for the fans,
but I was just fighting for my life. Like I
really was praying during a fight, like Jesus, just keep
me alive, because the fight felt like death. I remember
fighting for air. I remember getting hit and seeing lights,
and I remember like coaches telling me twain rounds like
you can do this, you can do this, just like
(01:03:16):
dig and dude, it was a really really hard fight.
And if you ever get in one of those, I
just recommend you pray because that's literally what I was doing.
I mean, I wasn't figuratively. I was literally praying Jesus,
please just keep me alive. And I was fighting with
all my strength, and like afterwards, I was like overheated,
like I could barely move.
Speaker 2 (01:03:36):
I was so hot it was like hard to breathe.
After the fight, he also gave a post fight speech
in the cage that was like a lot of love,
a lot of love.
Speaker 1 (01:03:45):
But then he referred to the Synagogue of Satan that
was coming after him.
Speaker 2 (01:03:49):
So he also said Arab Arabic. Remember he spoke Arabic
to the Russian reporter thinking he was Muslim. Because of
his actions, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:03:55):
I don't need to like him as a person, which
I don't.
Speaker 2 (01:03:57):
But does he look like a player at bandam weight,
because that's not He didn't look amazing, but he was gritty.
Speaker 1 (01:04:03):
Okay, so I'll give him credit. It was definitely a
gritty performance, no question about it. That was a tough
ass fight, but never gonna made off have some fight
IQ issues, especially as the fight goes long. So I'll
say this, he definitely grinded it out. He definitely did
what he needed to do to get the win, and
it was.
Speaker 2 (01:04:21):
Tough and he was tank held up in a new way.
Speaker 1 (01:04:23):
I will respect that. But I didn't see anybody who
was going to make a run at bandam weight. I
can tell you that that's fair.
Speaker 2 (01:04:28):
That's fair women's strawweight activity. Tabatha Ricchie getting the stoppage,
hitting Amanda Heboss and an elbow directly in the eye,
reaggravating a former injury, breaking her damn face. Yeah, she
was in the hospital afterwards. Riccie. She got close to
the top level, but didn't seem like she had finishing ability,
didn't seem like she brought enough danger. It was the
(01:04:50):
perfect shot at the perfect time. But could you see
her climbing now at one one five after this?
Speaker 1 (01:04:54):
Well, if she can keep doing that, I mean, I
don't know if I can say one performance gets us there.
But that was a really nice Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
She was more aggressive too, she was pushing the clinch.
Speaker 1 (01:05:02):
And so this is this is my issue with women's
MA more broadly, which is that they just don't have
enough offensive capability. And then her coach told her about
that elbow which it started at this angle and then
finished with this angle, which was fucking nice. Man, that
was really really nice. This is my issue with some
of the with the women's the state of women's MMA,
which is that there's just not enough skill development. So
(01:05:22):
if she can continue to build on that and do more,
it doesn't have to be like elbows against the cage.
But I think she's got something going here. I just
want to make a point. I've said this a million times.
Takedown defence is one part. If you're getting pressed against
the fence, literally stopping the takedown. But I cannot overstate
how critical it is, and I've been saying this for years.
At this point, you must have the skills to extricate
(01:05:45):
yourself and get your back off the fence. And I
understand Ricci was pressing hard and had the head position,
had the underhook many times. I get it not an answer,
and look at the consequence of the result. She's able
to whip up that elbow and then obviously score the stop.
Not being able to get yourself off the fence, especially
against a non championship level fighter inexcusable in UFC in
(01:06:09):
twenty twenty five, inexcusable.
Speaker 2 (01:06:10):
You must be able to do it. Even though this
is the better wait for Hebas. She does find a way.
She looked you look at it at times, but she
does a way to have too many holes defensively, what
opens up.
Speaker 1 (01:06:19):
Opportunity she had that she had the haragoshi she threw
at Landa that was nice, but she couldn't do a
lot with it, right, Yeah, So she gets this amazing
throw and then Ricci just kind of uses the fence
to get back to her feet. Ricchi put things together
here to answer the question. Let's see if she can
keep putting things together.
Speaker 2 (01:06:37):
Yeah, who did she come up above water and lose
to that? And that loss that stopped her when it
was Jan Shannon by decision that stopped a.
Speaker 1 (01:06:44):
U you know in fairness is real good and she.
Speaker 2 (01:06:46):
Dropped a split decision previously loopy Godina's. But she's be
pretty decent competition in between. Now she's gonna get a
step up for sure after this. The curtain drinker of
the night so a former one championship fighter, And is
it my fair say jiu jitsu legend or just a
cop practition. He's a legend. Marcus went in there against
(01:07:09):
the it means fat cheeks, the hanging love pouch of
Mark Martin Boudet who had fat cheeks on the I mean,
who am I to judge? You got the win, but
gas for being that jag. He had a couple of
good moments on the ground. But it's striking.
Speaker 1 (01:07:24):
Blows my mind. Is like, dude, if you were watching
jiu jitsu in the twenty tens and you watch the
wars between Busha and Judolpho Vieira, and then someone would
have told you, hey, both of these guys are gonna
end up in the UFC, you'd have been like, holy fuck, yes,
and then they both got there and you're like, damn,
this ain't shit, Like this is not at all what
I was hoping for. I know Boushetia had a decent
(01:07:47):
win against a mere al Bosi, but that win against
Ruggrug really to me, poortends what you're what you've got.
Speaker 2 (01:07:53):
With this guy.
Speaker 1 (01:07:54):
And dude, here's the part that drives me nuts. If
you watch Bouchetia's jiu jitsu career, he wasn't He was
very skilled, I want to be clear, like he was
very technical. Obviously, if you're gonna win multiple titles, win
and without the ge, you're very technical. But let me
be honest about something. B See, he won a lot
of those two that I had this conversation with a
high level black belt because he was such a fucking
(01:08:16):
dynamic athlete. Okay, he had a clear athletic advantage over
these guys. Dude, he did. He look more athletic to
you than Martin.
Speaker 2 (01:08:24):
He's pretty damn built, but he gassed.
Speaker 1 (01:08:27):
But he didn't like dude, he would move like a
fucking anther yea in jiu jitsu on the feet, He's
a little robotic on the ground.
Speaker 2 (01:08:33):
He didn't look that great.
Speaker 1 (01:08:34):
He fell off the back of Buddai one time, Yeah,
because he got a little high. I was like, dude,
he could have.
Speaker 2 (01:08:39):
Been a showcase entrance fight for him and instead it
completely he looked. Did it completely expose him? Or was
this like go back to get in better shape and
then we'll see it. It wasn't like.
Speaker 1 (01:08:48):
This one fight exposed him. What wasn't like the Bo
Nickel RDR thing. However, in concert with other lackluster performances
that had similar contours to this one, You're like, dude, ude,
what the fuck is happening here?
Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
Man? Just as very dr really makes one look good.
And people are tweeting about Wanton Mallikin in the octagon,
you know what I mean?
Speaker 1 (01:09:07):
Well, who doesn't want to see Malkin in theay?
Speaker 2 (01:09:09):
He's not young either, by the way, that fella Malka.
He's like thirty six, thirty seventies.
Speaker 1 (01:09:13):
Okay, but it's heavyweight.
Speaker 2 (01:09:14):
Yeah, yeah, I went with you right there. All right,
let's keep it going to topic number four. H Dana
White has made it has made a bunch of announcements
last week that really have the late summer and fall
looking red hot from a main event and comine event level,
but the missing link was the comin event to UFC
three nineteen August sixteenth in Chicago. We finally have it,
and we'll see featherweights as Aaron Pico, who lost his
(01:09:36):
UFC debut fight, now gets a replacement here in Loron Murphy.
They will square off, likely of course for title shot implications.
Pico feels like a hot product coming in here as
a free agent. This will be his debut. Luke, so
do you like this fight at all as a replacement
for the Pico debut or do you see potential trap
(01:09:56):
fight capabilities for Loroen Murphy in his style in what
should be a chance for Pico to come in and press.
And like we said, Asakura got a title shot in
day one, Patricio Pippole was kind of set up to
get a title shot if he had beaten Yairo Rodriguez.
There's a lot at stake here. Is this the right
opponent for the entry even though he lost his original opponent.
Speaker 1 (01:10:14):
So he was supposed to fight on Saturday obviously, Yeah,
and it fell apart obvious anybody, no fault of his
own so he has to extend his camp a little bit.
There's always a little bit of a concern with that,
but I actually think that's better than what you get
with Murphy, which is what three weeks notice or something,
which is hardly time to prep I'll say this tough
opponent in three weeks. Okay, I'm glad you brought that up.
(01:10:36):
It's out of the frying pan into the fire with
this one. So the problem with fighting Moulsar is that
he's just got dominating grappling and you would have thought, okay,
maybe Pico can stop that. But of course lots of
people have thought they could do that and then couldn't
get over it. But the difference is Moulzar is going
to create contact, right He's going to make contact with you.
He's going to wrap up with you. He's gonna shoot
(01:10:57):
on you, he's going to try and get your back.
He is going to make physical contact with you. Murphy
is not that guy. Pico's challenge here. It's not a
striker versus grappler because Murphy can grapple, obviously, but it's
a different challenge where now Murphy, and by the way,
I guess it would have been the same size cage.
Either way, it's gonna be the big cage. He's gonna
(01:11:19):
be playing keep away. And now now Pico has to
wrestle him a little bit or at a bare minimum,
find not just strike with HIMBC. People think it's striking
versus grappling. No, you have to find this guy. He's
a touch and go guy. That is a completely different
fight than Maulsar. Molsar is not that guy. He's contact.
Speaker 2 (01:11:39):
I get it on three weeks notice. And if fighting
ev Love was a major deal, because it's almost as
if UFC doesn't want to put him in the title
shot even though he deserves it. So you beat him,
you're getting catapulted. I think still, Laurrel Murphy is the
level of opponent a quasi title contender in this division
where he almost fits the same category. But is this
the right move overall, Luke, even with the original matchup,
(01:12:00):
it is out of it. They put you in the
frying pan, right in the damn deep water all your
uh I can use all those terms there. We always
they always do that. But is this the type of
guy you should do that too? Or should you almost
kind of set him up to look good in the
right style matchup, because he's young enough that you actually
could build around.
Speaker 1 (01:12:18):
So that's exactly the point. Not only could Pico lose here,
he could lose here in a way where it not
that he would get thrashed per se. Although you know
anything's possible. You can look limited and boring, bingo, bingo.
He can be made to look like low rent. Yeah,
he can be, which is not fair because Loroa Murphy's
real good. But I'm saying Laron Murphy's style, assuming he's ready,
(01:12:41):
Pico's gonna have to find a way to corner and
control him. So does he wrestle him? Does he get
too aggressive?
Speaker 2 (01:12:47):
Again?
Speaker 1 (01:12:48):
Like this is a ver this is a complete or
just a completely different challenge in mos Are in some
ways strategically a little bit more of a complex one
in terms of what kind of At least when moss Are,
you kind of have a sense of what what offense
am I going to have to have ready? What are
the pieces I'm gonna have to build around that? With
Murphy it's I think much much harder to figure that out.
(01:13:10):
So Murphy is coming in on shorter notice, and I
do think that changes the equation somewhat. Do we know
if it's five rounds. Is it a five round main
event Long Island, Luke.
Speaker 5 (01:13:19):
I think it's only three I can look into.
Speaker 1 (01:13:21):
Oh that's even worse.
Speaker 2 (01:13:24):
That's a tough st So originally a fire fighter, right,
originally the Evil fight was originally they have low fight.
I wonder if the three week notice on this bumps.
Speaker 1 (01:13:31):
Which is which is understandable for Murphy. I get it Murphy.
Speaker 2 (01:13:34):
Though, as we already know, sixteen oho to one, but
it is that last fight against Josh Emmett, the five
round decision in April of that.
Speaker 1 (01:13:41):
Emmitt is not as polished. Emmitt is a harder hitter,
but it is right.
Speaker 2 (01:13:43):
That didn't make you want to insert him into a
title shot. You got the feelings like he's going to
win safely and continue on and take, you know, put
the least amount of risk. He's one of those type
of fighters. He plays the edges. He's gonna he's gonna
do just enough to win in some cases while making
you look bad. You can in a in a sense,
the UFC can eliminate that. With Pico getting a tough
win here and then, like we said, he's going to
(01:14:05):
get elevated to the top.
Speaker 1 (01:14:06):
Well, either way. Had he gotten a win over Mosar
or Larone, either way, he would get a title shot.
I think there's just no question about that. So the
stakes in that particular sense don't change. But if you're
a Pico's team, man, you really have to. It's like like,
this is a very complicated.
Speaker 2 (01:14:23):
Great why this is Brian Ortega per se? Just like
as an example or a yeah Ar Rodriguez, you can
you can say, okay, I can see a scenario where
he could get a knockout yea, or he could control
on the groundever where he could make this work.
Speaker 1 (01:14:33):
Those guys force contact. Murphy is the opposite of that
kind of shit. So you really have to have a
strategic vision dialed in and a hardcore execution of it.
And by the way, you drop one round, man, and
then the other rounds are close. Like even if you
feel like you did enough, and we could say you
did enough, it doesn't matter.
Speaker 2 (01:14:50):
Let's see the tweet.
Speaker 5 (01:14:51):
By the way, it's three rounds.
Speaker 2 (01:14:52):
Oh man, dude, do you have odds on that from drive?
Speaker 1 (01:14:54):
That's a tough assignment.
Speaker 2 (01:14:56):
I'd love to get early odds. Can we also see
this tweet here from Laren Murphy I'm gonna ask you
to do three jobs at once. Here here's Larn Murphy saying,
never shot away from a challenge three weeks. Notice, no problem, banger.
Let's go. Considering though, that he's got that Loren's got
wins over Ega Barbosa. If he added Pico to it
and he's still unbeaten just the one draw on his
(01:15:17):
record right through seventeen pro fights, that he'd have a
much stronger case. And moving forward, He's also got another
albatross in front of him and Evil with, so maybe
they make those two fight each other just still and
also keep a limit.
Speaker 1 (01:15:27):
By the way, here comes jay On Silva taking on
Diego Lopez.
Speaker 2 (01:15:30):
Who's going to get a quick pass to the top
with easily easily.
Speaker 1 (01:15:34):
So, I mean, Murphy has the disadvantage of three weeks,
but he's got the huge advantage of Oh, here's a
name that people want to see you get beat by. Yes,
you beat that guy. He could do a lot for you,
except if he does it in another boring way that
it just kind of deflates the whole thing rather than
lifting himself up.
Speaker 2 (01:15:51):
And we got a post here from Pico on Instagram
after the fight fell apart, saying now.
Speaker 1 (01:15:55):
This no, no, no, no, this was after the mostar fight
fell apart.
Speaker 2 (01:15:57):
Yes, he's saying, not going to sugarcoat it that. I'm
pretty just a pointed you pulled out of this one.
I get that things happen, and I truly hope that
whatever's going on you recover quickly. That said, my camps
ain't cheap, aren't cheap, and I'm ready to get in
there and put on a show sooner than later. I
understand there's an opening for August sixteen. So he did
kind of talk his way into it in a lot
of ways. Here Smart moved by Pico.
Speaker 1 (01:16:15):
So we should just say it again again, this is
the way the business works. It's nothing new. Yeah, but
these plug and play scenarios where it's like, hey, you
got to take on a striker, Oh no, three weeks
later it's or a three weeks notice, it's a change,
and now it's going to be a grappler again, or
whatever the situation is. And that guy's coming in a
short notice and this guy's having to change last minute.
It messes with the kind of fight you would get
(01:16:37):
under an ideal sense.
Speaker 2 (01:16:38):
I get, that's the way I just said smart move,
but I meant it. If you want the smoke, and
Pico wants the damn smoke, yes, like he's kind of
been held chopping up a bit. Should have got the
Patricio title fight. Never got it that the merger to
PFL kind of kept them on the outside, which is
why they're gone Patricio and him. But he wants it,
So that's the way you get it. Say, Look, I
want to be there on the three nineteen. They gave
(01:16:59):
him a tough opponent. Let's find out. Did you get
any odds on that long now?
Speaker 5 (01:17:02):
They haven't been released yet, all right, it'll be.
Speaker 2 (01:17:04):
Interested to check that out. I want to talk to
you about this, Luke. Nothing beats relaxing at home on

Done right there, still to come your DMS and my shit.
But let's hit topic number five Saturday night with Xander
Zias in the main event picking up a vacant junior
middleway title in the WBO. It was the final card
for Top Rank in its current run on ESPN that
began back in twenty seventeen, and with it, the at
(01:19:00):
least for right now, officially a temporary end to boxing
on network television. You still have PBC on Prime, you
still have to Oonne doing their things, but Top Ranks
still looking for a new deal, and a lot of
uncertainty about the future and a new player arriving in
zoof of boxing. Luke, it's tough to hear this in
the fallout of HBO's demise in twenty eighteen, Showtime Sports
(01:19:22):
stopping boxing at the end of twenty twenty three. But
let's talk about what this moment actually means and how
daunting it is. While boxing could return to the airwaves
in the US soon on major television, we'll see how
it all plays out, this moment creates something of a
bookend to boxing television in the US. What's the real
reason in your eyes why TV networks have slowly walked
(01:19:44):
away from this sport, even though streaming wise, it's healthy
enough at the moment.
Speaker 1 (01:19:48):
So do we have the graphic of all the places
where it's no here it is so it used to
be on CBS, now it's not. It used to be
on ABC. It's not ESPN again, it could return in
some fashion, but it's not HBO. Certainly it's NBC. It's
not I mean again, good return, who knows, but it's
not Fox.
Speaker 2 (01:20:04):
Same thing.
Speaker 1 (01:20:04):
Showtime doesn't exist anymore in terms of the sports side,
and then USA Network Boxing has essentially at one point
and perhaps permanently, walked away from all of them. Listen,
I missed the whole conversation around the Ali Act, though
I'm sure you and Shaunza tell I saw something that
was brilliant. Yeah, let's put that aside for just a
minute because one of the real let's go back. I
(01:20:26):
know it might be Orwellian, but they're calling at the
Box among other names. They're calling it the boxing revival.
Revival is the act. There is a bit of truth
to that, not that they're the ones who are going
to revive it per se, but they're taking advantage of
it at a very important moment in time. They have
waited for the sport and the sports caretakers to let
(01:20:46):
it wither on the vine to such a degree that
now is, among other reasons, the perfect time for them
to try a takeover at a bare minimum, to assert
themselves into the marketplace in a very dominant way. The
reality is, we see, I went back and I looked
at this. Here are just some facts since the end
of the Pakia Mayweather era of boxing. Pay per views
(01:21:11):
never really recovered in this country.
Speaker 2 (01:21:13):
I mean the upgrade and illegal streaming, the ability to
do it even easier has been Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:21:18):
But you didn't really develop stars after that. I mean,
that's really the bigger issue to me. So that's one
something I didn't really fully appreciate until I looked into it.
The ratings of boxing before and after COVID collapsed. So
that was another part where they just never really were
as some other sports organizations you have seen included.
Speaker 2 (01:21:35):
You've also read hot, which could have stolen a casual
part of that audience.
Speaker 1 (01:21:38):
I think it absolutely did, and I think more broadly,
irrespective of the pandemic, MMA has taken away a part
of the sporting public consciousness that would pay attention to boxing,
and they just kind of redirected it to themselves, and
of course that you can expand the pie. It's not
altogether siphoning off people in that way. But the reality
is because the sport is so fractured, and because the
(01:22:02):
people charged with maintaining the sports excellence, in particular the
sanctioning bodies have done such a bad job, they have
helped guide its irrelevance, no doubt, There's just no way
around it. And so because you have an interesting regulatory
moment where the timing is right, if you want to
just deregulate and strip out protections, it's a good time
(01:22:23):
for you. And then on top of it, because the
stakeholders and the people who care for boxing have done
such a poor job maintaining its visibility and access in
ways they've ruined it. There is another component you mentioned
is doing well on streaming. I mean, I don't know,
I don't know if I buy that under linear television
considerations there was more much. I mean, I know there's
(01:22:46):
more money being spent on streaming, but in terms of
how much money was being made from television versus so
much money being made from streaming, most sports organizations made
more money from from linear television right, Well.
Speaker 2 (01:22:58):
We're in the midst of the change because Netflix is
doing so I'm boxing streaming huge well.
Speaker 1 (01:23:02):
Also, May of twenty twenty five was the first time
there were more people watching streaming than there were white
households than there were watching linear television. That the tipping
point was finally achieved. But the point I'm trying to
make is like a lot of streaming services are not
making a lot of money. In fact, streaming the churn
has been enormous and it's been very, very difficult. That
means that they're going to cut things that they can
(01:23:24):
rely upon less to generate revenue for them and outside
of big pay per views, which again the players in
the space have a hard time working together to make
the biggest fights all the time. Again, there's been some
change in that. What I'm saying to you is, if
you're running a streaming service PC and you need to
focus on things that you can guarantee are going to
(01:23:45):
make revenue, particularly at scale with consistency, A league model
for sports teams is going to go much further than oh,
we got a one off in February and then another
one in July, and then maybe that falls through because
tank Kid his girlfriend again allegedly in Florida. So all
of these factors to me have sucked the life out
(01:24:05):
of US boxing. And as a consequence, the timing is,
if you're just Dana White and pure, it's fucking perfect
for them to just snatch it up by the I
think of.
Speaker 2 (01:24:14):
The people that might be voting on this, you know,
congressional bill, people like, oh yeah, I remember when I
used to watch boxing. It was more fun and it
felt like it was more organized. We need something to
fix that. Well, they seem to have the perfect antidote
with the headlines of it's gonna be safer, it's going
to be all this. But we've you know, we got
into that on Friday, and I think you certainly know
our stance. I'm not going to say this is much
ado about nothing. I'm not gonna say this doesn't mean anything.
(01:24:35):
And I know it's going to sound like the typical
boxing guy as there's a fire behind him going nothing
to see here, We're fine. And that's sort of my
history in my coverage of boxing, and boxing is always
on fire in negative ways and then alternates quickly to
be on fire and good ways, but then can return
right there. I think a lot of it though, has
to do with the changing trends I mean networks, I
(01:24:55):
mean streaming is taking over the impact and the value
of network TV, so so of course you would see
some of those numbers changes. You also have to look
at things like Dezone is putting on like seventy percent
of the box and it's televised.
Speaker 1 (01:25:06):
These days, that's a disaster.
Speaker 2 (01:25:08):
I know, at least when it was in the showtime
in HBO era, you would have people who had showtime
in HBO for other reasons, scripted series, movies, whatever, and
that's like, oh, fights on, let me see who's watching.
You're never going to get that in the American market
on his zone. Yet they have all you know what
I mean. And then like it's like the part that
I really don't love about this a react is that
they're pushing it from the stance of like, can't you
see boxing's dead in America. Well, I think Turkey played
(01:25:31):
a role in that, not just putting all of his
fights on to Zone again where people can't stumble into it,
but putting fights out of Las Vegas and putting them
you know, too often or unnecessarily in certain Turkey so no,
I'm saying it all matters, it all plays in. Also,
this is the end of a current era, and I'm
not saying this was the best era. The last ten
to fifteen years. The era here where we went away
(01:25:54):
from what Prime, HBO and Showtime used to be, where
any promoter can come to them and they're going to
pay the highest dollar for the best fights. That went
away when exclusive contracts started and exclusive contracts allowed promoters
to you know, be up longer, have more money at
their disposable And we did have a good era of
big end fights, but that also breeds more segregation and
(01:26:17):
promoters not working together unless a fight is big enough
where you can do a two network pay per view.
This is the end of that era, and that era
has to die for a new one to begin. In
some ways, so I don't necessarily look at it as
can't you see this sport's dead. The sport's a niche sport.
It has the opportunity, when done right in the right matchup,
you shoot it to the masses. It can do bigger
than anything else in sports. That's still true, But we're
(01:26:38):
coming off of that era, which wasn't a fully healthy
one where the networks lost their teeth where they just
gave the keys to the promoter coming in that they
signed the deal with and said, you know, in some
cases you match make you do everything. You know, you
programmed this for us. That's the UFC model to be fair,
you know what in that regard, and I think we
got to get around that and see what's next. Is
Netflix going to become the new what HBO meant to
(01:27:01):
boxing in the late nineties, right where we're only the
best fights, no matter who the protra is. You bring
the fight to us, we'll give it to you. It's
gonna have to change in that regard. Also, you know
my sources telling me ESPN's not done at all with boxing. Yeah. Again,
it brings about to now we're.
Speaker 1 (01:27:16):
Only having this conversation at a moment where right now
there's I'm.
Speaker 2 (01:27:19):
Saying it could look worse than it actually is. I'm
not saying it's overly super healthy.
Speaker 1 (01:27:24):
You would agree, You would agree since the last five years,
in particular, the last ten boxing isn't is not as
healthy as it was even ten years ago.
Speaker 2 (01:27:32):
You could say fifteen, then I could tell you that
twenty twenty three was an insanely great sport. And that's
before Turkey even got here. It was insanely great year
for the sport. I met.
Speaker 1 (01:27:39):
Twenty twenty three was a great year. Great, but we.
Speaker 2 (01:27:42):
Also had post pandemic years have been pretty damn good.
Speaker 1 (01:27:45):
Okay, but with to me, the common denominator is the
withdrawal of network television from boxing has been in the
United States devastating because as I understand it, it's still
on network television in places like the UK, right, I mean,
they have something of a pa per view model there,
but they also have a lot of stuff that's on
over the air television.
Speaker 2 (01:28:05):
Sure.
Speaker 1 (01:28:07):
I did a sports radio show recently in my local
market and they were asking me. The question was what
happened to boxing? And I was like, oh, but look
at this, look at this, look at this. And they're like,
we can't name any top boxers. I mean, they know
who Canelo is, maybe, but we can't name any American
top boxers. How many people can name top American boxers anymore?
Speaker 2 (01:28:25):
I mean they really couldn't since the nineties, to be fair,
and that that's the.
Speaker 1 (01:28:28):
Diff Floyd is that everyone knew who Floyd was. Who's
Floyd's replacement in the American market, nobody.
Speaker 2 (01:28:34):
Well it was Floyd Ampacio and.
Speaker 1 (01:28:36):
Was not American in the American market.
Speaker 2 (01:28:38):
Okay, he was pretty damn so he was huge here.
I get it, I get it.
Speaker 1 (01:28:40):
But I'm saying, as an American fighter, who is the
guy who is that?
Speaker 2 (01:28:45):
Now? There was not a succeeder in that.
Speaker 1 (01:28:48):
Not even had we had to use whoever, Yes, not
even close.
Speaker 2 (01:28:52):
But that doesn't know what that didn't It doesn't matter
to me because up until basically this past year, America
was you know, the US was still the brightest stage
for boxing because of Las Vegas, right, So it almost
didn't matter to me with I get what you're saying,
but as long as it can be communicated to an
American audience in Pakia did that. Canelo did that to
a certain degree, Triple G for a short window to
a certain degree. It's really everything all at once. But
(01:29:14):
I don't think it's also the the end. This era
has to end for a new one to start, and
we're in the midst of that transition. What is the
new era gonna look like? That's what we're debating every episode. Yeah,
I mean it's not fully held, it's not great, it's
not a great stat to see all these networks not
covering it. But ESPN's a bound to bounce back. We're
gonna see zoof for boxing land in a big a
big channel could be ESPN.
Speaker 1 (01:29:35):
Boxing doing the UFC thing to me is not boxing's believe.
Speaker 2 (01:29:39):
Me, well, I agree with you on that uh top rank.
If you've seen Bob Ahriman interviews over the weekend, is
about to announce there they're going to be on streaming.
They said they're gonna be on regular cable like there's
gonna be a couple partners with there, So we'll see
what that plays out. It's still we have to get
away from a network's over paying promoters to play just
their fights, and we are getting away from that. Agree,
(01:30:00):
But what's it going to look like with you? Do
you not agree though?
Speaker 1 (01:30:02):
That there's a part of this conversation that has to
get made is one of the sanctioning bodies have fucked
everything up by not forcing the fights that deserve to
get made. Two the exclusive contracts. As you pointed out,
there has been if the promoters across the aisle were
more willing to work together to make big fights. Do
you believe network television would still be in boxing, I
should say, have a bigger footprint than it has now.
Speaker 2 (01:30:24):
Of course, okay about this, the boxing had to rely
on the pay per view system to its own fault.
Even they had to rely on that golden era of
Showtime and HBO competing against each other to their own
fault because it's split the market. You're no longer on
network TV, You're on pay cable, but at least there's
enough casual overlap and to pay cable on that.
Speaker 1 (01:30:41):
I'm as happy as the next guy to say that
what's coming I think is going to have a lot
of problems. But there's simply no denying that the architects
and maintainers of boxing as we understand it today have
played a substantive role in the reason why I think
a zoofa takeover is inevitable.
Speaker 2 (01:30:58):
But the answer is the zoof take The question is
is the zoos for take over the right answer? Or
are you just giving away all of your rights as
a fighter and as a rival promoter and allowing an
empty to come in and on day one have a monopoly,
because that's what we're setting this up to me.
Speaker 1 (01:31:12):
Let me say something very quickly. I want to connect
the dots here a little bit. Folks might say, again,
isn't there some benefit to monopoly and sports considering like
the NFL, for example, has it, and certain certain sports
leagues have anti trust exemptions expresses, we have players unions,
and of course, putting aside the fact that there's protections
and everything else like that, I'm just simply saying, isn't
there some kind of like if you're a network and
(01:31:32):
someone's like, oh, you can have all the best fighters,
They're gonna be like, oh yeah, fuck yeah, we want
that versus some fractured environment. It just works better in
that way. But I want to be clear about something.
If the game is to ultimately control what kind of
money is made by the athletes, I think people have
never I don't think people have connected the dots in
(01:31:53):
MMA as much like why is MMA in decline and
the way that it is? Many many reasons for it
now UFC per se, but MMA more broad, but UFC two,
like why is the heavyweight division so fucking bad? It's
many reasons. One of them has got to be that
you are not putting out enough of an incentive to
attract athletes over the course of generations that make this
(01:32:15):
worth it their while. So yes, could there be some
kind of benefit to consolidation for a network to then
really get behind the product. Yes, However, the long term
cost of making the athletes take less there's no such
thing as a free lunch. You will have to pay
that tax over the course of ten, twenty, thirty, forty years.
(01:32:37):
And I don't think it's going to result necessarily in
all of the ease and understanding that we typically have
with boxing.
Speaker 2 (01:32:44):
Will we end up comparing the Riact to the Patriot
Act and the same uh same uh overreact.
Speaker 1 (01:32:50):
I don't think you're going to get people marching in
the streets over the ri Act, but but.
Speaker 2 (01:32:54):
It's the same level of extreme overreaction, like something needs
to change and it's changed, dude, I mean changed. It's
so fun. The answer isn't one one store, and that's it.
The answer isn't Walmart.
Speaker 1 (01:33:05):
Let's just be very clear about it. T KO is
trying to use the federal government to write custom legislation
to entrench their market position.
Speaker 2 (01:33:13):
And now you've got an aikiso of MVP being like, Yo,
this is what needs to happen. We can be a
UBO too.
Speaker 1 (01:33:17):
Yeah, it's just unfucking believable. Well, that's what's happening. You're
having companies write federal legislation to entrench position. It used
to be the case that they wanted to, you know,
uh uh work with the government, right like we were
going to run towards regulation. And now what they're trying
to do is become so powerful that they get to
define what regulation even looks like regulators. So anyway, that's
(01:33:41):
what's happening here. And I just think long term, if
you're going to undercut what makes it valuable to the athlete,
that will hurt the product long term. And I think
some of those fruits are being born out here in
MMA today.
Speaker 2 (01:33:56):
And not all change is negative and and there there
could be positives to the sport of organizations.
Speaker 1 (01:34:02):
Good luck THEO Cruiser White Belt.
Speaker 2 (01:34:05):
I've seen the recent history that it's actually not beneficial
for the athletes themselves. Then that's that's where the argument
begins in my eyes. We have a tweetter from Dan
Rayfield to sum it all up on the impact of
this moment. The last top rank event of its ESPN
contract their Saturday. After that, there'll be no regularly schedule
boxing on linear TV in the US for the first
time since essentially the early nineteen forties when TV became
(01:34:28):
widely accessible. Shame on the stewards of the sport who
let it happen. I mean, I can't say he's wrong. No,
it's not wrong. And I can't say the four sanctioning
body system has been awesome for this.
Speaker 1 (01:34:38):
They've been thieves of the sport.
Speaker 2 (01:34:40):
But you're gonna, you know, you're gonna have to figure
out if you want the extreme opposite of that, and
that's the the UFC monopoly system. That's what you're getting.
Speaker 1 (01:34:49):
Do you want combat sports to turn into banquet food,
because that's what you're gonna get.
Speaker 2 (01:34:53):
Yeah, there it is. That's our take on that. Those
are your five topics for the week. Argue amongst yourselves
in the comments. Please also, we give you a chance
every Sunday evening to have your questions answered. Okay, so
we put out the bat alert light thing on Instagram
and on x that morning. Combat you'll respond to that,
you'll maybe get on the show. We got to complete
(01:35:14):
compete with flannels and JITs and dazz down there in
mahallow Land. This one's called d MS from the doll
I mean that just sounds so awful.
Speaker 1 (01:35:25):
Luke, I hate it, but the fans love it, and
so therefore we are stuck with it.
Speaker 2 (01:35:31):
First question you got, producers. It comes to us from
Jack Haggerty, Luke, who's next? We stole his thunder here?
And hilarious John Jones at the two five. I mean,
were you thinking?
Speaker 1 (01:35:45):
I was just trying to make the use of the
game as best I could. Dude, it's getting up here
and being like he should retire, Like there's just no
way that he's going to do that, right, I mean,
it seems so implausible, So like you have to think
of it, strickling fight to mek fight.
Speaker 2 (01:36:02):
I'd rather shower a bullet.
Speaker 1 (01:36:05):
See, now you're giving him fights that are going to
cost him some damage.
Speaker 2 (01:36:07):
In the long run. Yeah, yeah, I mean they all are.
They all will. Who we got next up in this piece?
Speaker 3 (01:36:14):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:36:14):
From our Kirk three to ten, Welcome to the party.
Love to hear your opinions on Rob de Valashvili. Cory
Sandhagen is coming up at UFC three.
Speaker 1 (01:36:23):
Well, we got to get questions that are picked that
are not derivative of the actual topics that we have.
They need to be distinct, say that fair question.
Speaker 2 (01:36:34):
You're excited for that fight, aren't you.
Speaker 1 (01:36:35):
I'm excited for that fight. And again I'm gonna say
one more time, I'm not picking against Morob until he loses.
Speaker 2 (01:36:41):
But smart of you talking about a guy on a
fourteen fight win streak.
Speaker 1 (01:36:44):
I'm just saying, like or looking for a fortu, what
is the best way to beat Morob san Hagen's way
is not if you fought him a hundred times, he
would lose the majority of them. Yes, however, saying fuck it,
I'm glad to go for broke on this fucking guy
I think is by far your best chance to do it.
(01:37:05):
You have to have to finish him to be smart.
Speaker 2 (01:37:09):
But you gotta be smart. I don't think you have
to finish him. I'm not saying it's easy. I'm not saying.
Speaker 1 (01:37:13):
Someone's to have an approach. We're finishing him. You're right,
you don't.
Speaker 2 (01:37:17):
You gotta win three rounds at the end of don't
make it hard.
Speaker 1 (01:37:19):
But you have to have an approach that legitimately threatens him.
And that means you have to fucking have a little
bit of recklessness.
Speaker 2 (01:37:26):
You've got to get you've got to discipline him, You've
got to take away him free will.
Speaker 1 (01:37:30):
And that's not holstering offense, that's letting.
Speaker 2 (01:37:32):
It go interesting. Let's hear from the next from the
next person that wants uh. If this is from Ethan Tagger,
how do you guys see the one hundred and fifty
four pound division playing out? A lot of great names
in and near the division right now, and I think
some of the best fights that can be made are
in this group. Yeah, they're definitely talking about boxing. It's
the deepest Shiit division.
Speaker 1 (01:37:51):
At the very top, Boots resigned with Matroom, Boots.
Speaker 2 (01:37:54):
At the very top, resigned with Mattroom, Virgil Ortiz Junior
at the very top, coming off the windrumv Bndora just
had the second win over Zoo. Then you've got ericson Lubman,
who's got a big fight coming up against who is it?
It's Bakramrtizali. He's going to be a tire fight. Rtizaliev
has one of the other belts. Terrence Crawford has a belt,
but I don't really consider him in this division at
(01:38:14):
this moment, although he said he might come back.
Speaker 1 (01:38:16):
Yeah, right.
Speaker 2 (01:38:16):
And then you've got who's the guy that dropped Virgil
Artist twice. Ukrainian guy, I'm Waffler's guy. Boichuk Boichuk, Sir Bowichuk,
another player at the very top of this division. This
division's freaking awesome. Jamel Charlow and Keith Thurman, two senior guys.
I'm still looking for a.
Speaker 1 (01:38:34):
Big fight out there. Do you consider him at all
a player?
Speaker 2 (01:38:37):
Eryl Spence another name throwing with those two old names.
And then you've got Xanderzayas twenty two years old, just
became the youngest male champion, didn't beat a killer. Some
people thought he was too defensive and and b performance. Yeah,
I'll give you that, but he is a player in
this mix as well. Who's who's going to be standing
at the end of it right now, I'll put my
(01:38:57):
money on I think it would. I think the finals,
if there was a tournament, would come down to Boots
and Virgil or if you made a tournament. Yeah, if
Fundoor's a wildcard.
Speaker 1 (01:39:05):
For Door's a wildcard, I totally agree. I've slept on him.
He just keeps winning. What I although, the Mendoza win
has hard me to like. Every time I see it,
I'm like, how do people keep losing this fucking guy?
But if you made a bracket, you'd have to put
Boots and Virgil on opposite sides your bracket.
Speaker 2 (01:39:20):
This is this, it's a great division. We'll see what
happens there. What else you got jin from Kevin Mitchell
underscore seven to nine? If you could transplant the Pride
rule set into any current promotion, which one would benefit
MOSTFL and would fans actually go for it? Let me
add in that Habib had an interview and he said
that he wished the UFC went to I believe he
(01:39:42):
said either fifteen minute first round or in title fights,
a twenty five minute first round. Just no rounds. It's
basically just fight.
Speaker 1 (01:39:47):
You're right, Yeah, I don't like that.
Speaker 2 (01:39:49):
If we took the Pride rule set, including the round
set up, including the barbaricness of it, you think PFL
could benefit from him?
Speaker 1 (01:39:56):
You would need to be an alternative to the UFC.
What better way to do that than have ten minute
first rounds against having big theatrics also soccer kicks stomps
score the fight as a whole, not round by round. Yes,
you have rounds, but you don't score the rounds.
Speaker 2 (01:40:12):
Would you like messy trash talk and like b KFC
style promotion. No can be profession style. Okay, I'm saying
in the way you in the way you market and
promote and like KFC is very like like white trash
fight at some day.
Speaker 1 (01:40:25):
Yeah, I mean people talking about swallowing seamen in their
press conferences. No, you don't have to do any of that,
but you you wouldn't. Again, you have to be an
alternative to the UFC, not UFC light, No one, No
one fucking wants that.
Speaker 2 (01:40:38):
Yeah, Donald's though, Don just got more investment money. You
see that, A lot more investment from where I forgot who?
From who?
Speaker 1 (01:40:44):
Do you see how much?
Speaker 2 (01:40:45):
Yeah? I forgot all the information that goes with that.
But Don Davis had just brought in another big whale.
Speaker 1 (01:40:51):
If I mean they keeps they keep I'm not gonna
say scamming investors, but they keep getting money from investors from.
Speaker 2 (01:40:56):
India, from India investment.
Speaker 1 (01:40:57):
They can't get the Hey, investors in the UFL, you're
not getting that money back.
Speaker 2 (01:41:02):
Just so you know, interesting stuff right there? Do we
have another one from these people? Oh from nang kissoor
who would win in an m M A fight? Right
now they're talking about this online. So Bellamir, the daughter
of Frank Mere improved to four and oh over the weekend.
Chicken wing chicken Chris ben Watta style cross wing chicken face,
cross face chicken.
Speaker 1 (01:41:23):
That's a very gotta be careful invoking that name.
Speaker 2 (01:41:26):
And now Bella was asked about it at her press conference,
the idea of fighting Maya Lesner.
Speaker 1 (01:41:31):
The wait class does Bellameir fight in?
Speaker 2 (01:41:33):
Do we know? I don't know, but Mir is interested.
It would obviously be a continuation of the of the
rivalry between their fathers. Did you see that Maya Lesner
has uh.
Speaker 1 (01:41:43):
She's in a relationship.
Speaker 2 (01:41:45):
With with an NFL player yet yeh, yes, I don't
know if they're those kids.
Speaker 1 (01:41:48):
Are those kids are going to be fucking hoss athletes,
NCAA champion. I don't know, but she's obviously decorated. Yeah, yeah,
you know, I don't know how to even answer this,
you know, all banking you, Ben, I don't think this
is quite like that. But Belamir looks interesting as a prospect.
I'll say that she looks like she's got something interesting
(01:42:09):
going on.
Speaker 2 (01:42:09):
Would you say the same thing about another amateur prospect?
I wish I grabbed the photos of video I didn't,
but he puts MK on the crotch. And his name
is Christian Daguero. And over the weekend, did you see
he won his final amateur fight. He's got the champions.
Speaker 1 (01:42:21):
I did some tape study for him recently.
Speaker 2 (01:42:23):
He's going to turn pro next.
Speaker 1 (01:42:24):
Yeah, I did some tape study for him.
Speaker 2 (01:42:26):
I love that he loved he.
Speaker 3 (01:42:27):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:42:28):
I don't know if he wants me to say this,
but he sent me some footage of him sparring, and uh,
I you know, did a little.
Speaker 2 (01:42:34):
Help for him putting that MK on the crotch.
Speaker 1 (01:42:36):
I mean, I gotta be honest. I don't know how
much help I actually gave him, but I tried.
Speaker 2 (01:42:39):
Ahead of his pro debut. Let's get him on the show,
all right. Love to love to talk to that guy.
He's been with us from he he came to the
three Margarita show.
Speaker 1 (01:42:45):
By the way, did he Oh that's where he did.
Speaker 2 (01:42:46):
I forgot him. He told me he's going to fight
in the UFC one day, and I was like, you're
damn right, all right, shout out to that.
Speaker 4 (01:42:51):
I just want to say Bellameir fights at one time.
Speaker 2 (01:42:54):
One Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:42:54):
I don't know, and I don't do we know how
much my als home. I'm wanna.
Speaker 2 (01:42:58):
Actually, I think I think my I had even said
that she assumes. I'm sorry, I think Bella had said
that she believes Maya's over two hundred pounds because of
the muscles.
Speaker 1 (01:43:07):
Yeah, so Maya Lesner are looking at her track and
field thing on she goes to Colorado State. Yes, they
don't have they just have all of her wins and.
Speaker 2 (01:43:17):
Was like, they don't have height and wait for a
young women, Well, I.
Speaker 1 (01:43:19):
Mean, I mean she's an athlete.
Speaker 3 (01:43:20):
Bro.
Speaker 1 (01:43:21):
Asking what they're height and weighted is not an unreasonable question.
Speaker 2 (01:43:24):
I ask women in their age though I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:43:26):
I don't know, I don't know what it is. But anyway, Yeah,
I'm not let bellamir have her own career, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:43:32):
And Maya Listner. Do you think Maya Lisner will end
up getting into combat sports at all? I hope not. Okay,
what about Rousey and Travis's kids.
Speaker 1 (01:43:40):
I haven't thought about it, right, what about Tisha and Rockies? Yeah,
once again, these are not questions I've pondered.
Speaker 2 (01:43:49):
Hey, this is what I did on Sunday, guys. I
went through the internet and I scoured the globe for
the highs and lows, the good, the bad, the ugly,
in the in between, in the worlds of combat sports
and beyond. Now, I don't want to boast. I don't
want to like call my shot Luke Thomas. But I
told Nocita this is going to get an a from
you today's patch.
Speaker 1 (01:44:07):
Let's see what you got.
Speaker 2 (01:44:08):
This is the kernels in my shit. Have you seen it?
Luke rip to our childhood arrows. But we have the
first picture of Hulk Hogan in heaven, Luke after his
uh death at the age of seventy one. That's that's
not acceptable, Okay, it's just wow. Wow.
Speaker 1 (01:44:32):
He loved the N word, didn't he. There was a time, Yes,
a time you mean you mean the last forty years.
Speaker 2 (01:44:38):
Yeah, it's a tough spot. I don't. I mean I
didn't like more in it because he was kind of
let me down as a fan.
Speaker 1 (01:44:44):
He was larger than life in the eighties. I remember
my brother got for his birthday. Do you remember the
hulkamani of workout set? Yeah, dude, I had a dumb
bells I had to I had that. He was larger
than life. But he loved the N word. That's the realcity.
Speaker 2 (01:44:56):
It happened. Also, we lost Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath,
Faith of Ola, Faith Metal, Faith of Biting bats, off
of the heads, off of bats. Here's a tribute to him.
Speaker 9 (01:45:07):
Crazy Train songwriter Ozzy Osbourne died today, which is a
coincidence because I had a crazy train ran on me
by eight mentally ill black guys at the truck stop
last night.
Speaker 1 (01:45:22):
Okay, that's that's very aggressive.
Speaker 2 (01:45:28):
Ozzy Osbourne. Apparently, Luke, let's go to Jeopardy. Did you
see this question? It's presumed to be fourteen and boys
and twelve in girls?
Speaker 9 (01:45:36):
Tom, what is the age of consent?
Speaker 3 (01:45:38):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:45:39):
Okay, okay, just wow, Tom, I'm going to have to
leave the stage.
Speaker 2 (01:45:43):
All right, let's get flatulant, Luke. This is this would
be you at a construction site. Yes, that was me
this morning on the train, the damn train. Oh my god,
that's discussion.
Speaker 1 (01:45:54):
Oh can I tell you one of my least favorite
things about Europe? Okay, the days? No, the day would
be great. First of all, my my my wife goes, oh,
the bathrooms in Europe are so much better. I'm like,
you're out of your mind. First of all, they don't
use urinal cakes in the men's room, just the automatic
red flag. But that's not my main complaint. My main
complaint is that they make you wipe and then throw
it in the garbage rather than in the toilet itself.
(01:46:16):
Let me tell you I didn't listen to that at all.
I threw it right in the fucking toilet. Oh, I
didn't want to know any of you.
Speaker 2 (01:46:22):
Have you ever been in the backseat of a car
when you had a crap and like your parents are like,
don't crap in my car? Yeah? I one time ship
my pants doing that? Really, this family, stop, quit, don't
you car? We're not now in the car he grabbing crapping.
Speaker 1 (01:46:44):
I've literally done that.
Speaker 2 (01:46:47):
While hosting this show. You have okay? Uh? Also, Luke,
why whyse words here from soccerate? You have respect for Socrates? Right,
a great philosopher thinker.
Speaker 1 (01:46:56):
Well, i'd be okay, yes, go ahead, I'm gonna do
a wo tang thing.
Speaker 2 (01:46:58):
But yes, they will forget in a day, but if
you shoot yourself, they will remember for a lifetime. You
gotta make big plays to be a big player. So crazy.
Speaker 1 (01:47:09):
I don't think that was Socrates. I think it was
he was right, As they said in Bill and Ted's
excellent adventure so crazy.
Speaker 2 (01:47:14):
Yeah, I just said, yeah, let's go to the hardwood. Here,
here's your baller of the week. This comes from somewhere
in Asia. Watch these moves. Oh shit, I don't know
if that's the Philippines. But watch this game. Okay, all right,

Why player's gonna play?
Speaker 3 (01:47:34):

Speaker 1 (01:47:38):
He seems delightful.
Speaker 2 (01:47:39):
All right, Luke, do you like basketball where everyone can play?
Speaker 1 (01:47:43):

Speaker 2 (01:47:45):

you know what, I think. Ten people just died on
the show. That's something.
Speaker 7 (01:48:18):
Here.
Speaker 2 (01:48:19):
Let's go to Big John Fury, father of Tyson, talking
about the idea of Jake Paul and a j boxing.
So say he's got a million pounds on Jake Paul knocking.
I'm saying, how does that work? And Joshua could knock
Jake Paul true or false.
Speaker 1 (01:48:39):
I don't want to see it, Okay, I wouldn't pay
for it.
Speaker 2 (01:48:42):
Okay, we've got ko's of the week, though. I think
you're gonna want to see this. Watch this bartender and

Court to overturn her conviction.
Speaker 2 (02:00:35):
So that's fun. Would you agree with those people that say, well,
if if Hunter Biden gets to walk, then she can walk.
Speaker 1 (02:00:43):
His interview with Channel five was fun, was it not?
Speaker 3 (02:00:45):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (02:00:46):
Dude?
Speaker 1 (02:00:46):
Was he not a connoisseur of crack?
Speaker 2 (02:00:48):
He in fact at a motel in my hometown as
we often talk about it. Oh, that's Ryan enjoyed both
crack and and hookers.
Speaker 1 (02:00:54):
Yes, he's been living life, brother. I don't think he hasn't.
Speaker 2 (02:00:57):

Speaker 1 (02:01:00):
Got I hope, well, probably yes, but I hope not.
Speaker 2 (02:01:03):

weekend to come, hopefully. Is there any box this weekend?
Speaker 1 (02:01:13):

Speaker 2 (02:01:15):
I don't think there's any.
Speaker 3 (02:01:16):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (02:01:16):
I think there's one fight and I forgot it offhand,
so I don't know nothing. I don't think there's anything.
Speaker 1 (02:01:21):
Nothing of significance. No, I think actually the UFCBJJ is Thursday, right,
first half.
Speaker 2 (02:01:25):
Of this month is pretty dead for all combat to
be fair until the UFC three.
Speaker 1 (02:01:29):
I think there's UFCBJJ two coming up. Long on Luke,
Am I wrong about that?
Speaker 5 (02:01:34):
I haven't really been paying.
Speaker 2 (02:01:35):
No One really likes scrappling likes it's like it's it's
like it's part it's part of a larger It's sort
of like like I like sour cream, but I wouldn't
eat it by the spoonful, right. I needed to be
like on like a taco. So to me, BJJ is
a is a condiment two fighting in general. MMA.
Speaker 1 (02:01:53):
So it's like ketchup on them straight, ketchup?
Speaker 2 (02:01:57):
No, No, you know what I mean.
