S1 (00:03):
This is Moody Radio 89.3. Mornings with Eric and Bridget.
S2 (00:07):
I love how diverse South Florida is. Even our communities.
You know, you think about Broward. It has a different
feel at times than Palm Beach County and definitely than Miami.
Miami can feel like a whole nother world, can't it?
S1 (00:19):
One thing I learned when I moved down here is
it's not even. It's every block can have a different
feel to it as you're just walking around or driving around.
Oh yeah. And there's a different feel. And it's just
it's it's because there are so many groups and different
types of people here. And we are a different type
of community. You don't experience, you just don't experience this
(00:42):
up north. It just doesn't happen. When I moved down here,
I was so surprised by the the variety and the
interest and the the community as it bubbled together in
a way that I just had never really experienced before.
S2 (00:55):
And we are richer for it. And I was going
to add to the word to your words flavours, all
the flavours as well. And Church United is of course
a ministry that's helping to kind of bridge all different
types of cultures and worlds together, especially for the sake
of the gospel. Eddie Copeland is joining us. And, Eddie, uh,
just give us an understanding. What is Church United?
S3 (01:18):
So good to be with you all. Good. Good morning. Uh,
Church United is a movement of churches across South Florida.
It's not a denomination. It's not even really a network.
It's just pastors and churches coming together to say, what
can we do together that we could not do on
our own? And that requires us to take a long
term view of transforming this region for the gospel. It's
(01:41):
a it's a 30 year view of transformation, not a
three year view of transformation that brings pastors and leaders
together to pursue healthy leaders, thriving churches, and flourishing cities.
So really, at the end of the day, it's pastors
and ministry leaders becoming friends, building trust together and going,
let's go on mission and own the lostness, the brokenness
and the pain of our region together.
S1 (02:02):
I read something in an article. I read something about
Church United and it said it's not just another network.
Church United is a network of networks. Could you explain
that to me? Right. What does that mean?
S3 (02:12):
Absolutely. Absolutely. It means that, you know, I think in
church world, there's there's two different types of identity, right?
You have like, a tribal identity. Okay. I'm a Baptist,
I'm a Presbyterian. I'm a part acts 29. But then
you have an identity for impact. And I think we
really deeply believe that that identity for impact is going
to look different in every region. So it's stacking hands
(02:35):
with other leaders and saying, hey, I'm not trying to
replace your network. We're not trying to say, hey, like, come,
come join our thing, but why don't we find a
space within church United to say, hey, why don't we
become friends and stack hands with other pastors to become
known more for what we are for, rather than what
we are against as the evangelical body of Christ. So
(02:56):
when we say network of networks, it's we are living
at that 60,000 foot level, connecting other leaders, other pastors
and ministries together for the sake of South Florida, not
for the sake of a denomination or a tribe.
S2 (03:10):
And you mentioned region. So it's already in Broward, it's
in Palm Beach, but something new is happening.
S3 (03:17):
Yeah, it's beautiful to see what God is doing in Miami. Uh,
for now, we we've been going at this for 11
years now. And I think transparently, Miami has been our
hardest soil. Uh, there's a spiritual stronghold over that city
because I think it's the most influential city in South Florida. Uh,
it is so shaping as the gateway to Latin America.
(03:39):
It is so shaping the world. I mean, the way
that we do ministry today in Miami is going to
shape the way that we do ministry everywhere tomorrow. And
God has really been, uh, opening up a whole new
crop of leaders down in Miami raising up not not
not just someone that really has this in their heart,
but to see groups of churches now coming together to say, hey,
(04:02):
we have to work together, this, this division, this identity
of just, hey, I'm Baptist, hey, I'm Presbyterian, I'm only
going to work within those confines. That's not working for us,
because Miami is only getting more and more lost to
the gospel. And our hope is let's actually stack hands
together for the sake of the kingdom. And I love
(04:22):
what I'm seeing happen in Miami.
S1 (04:24):
Well, a man who is stacking hands with others is
pastor lead pastor of Crossbridge Church, Carter, Brown and Carter.
How long have you been, as Eddie put it, working
the hard soil of Miami. How long have you been
in this community?
S4 (04:39):
Good morning everyone. Wonderful to be with you. Um, I
have been in Miami for ten years and working primarily
in this church church unity space for about five years.
In terms of intentionally developing relationships with other pastors and
leaders in the area.
S2 (05:02):
And what is in your own experience and perspective? What
is unique about ministry in your region of Miami?
S4 (05:11):
I think Miami is unlike any of the other regions
of South Florida. I'm born and raised in South Florida,
and being in Miami for the past ten years is
like living in a completely different world. Sometimes we say
Miami is the closest city to the United States. It
is very unique, and I think part of the uniqueness
(05:32):
is that there's a spiritual climate here that is interesting
to navigate, because you have a lot of people that
are raised in the church or raised primarily Catholic, but
they come to Miami for business, for fun, for pleasure,
and the last thing on their mind is getting reconnected
with their spiritual heritage or with the gospel. And so
(05:55):
you're competing against, you know, the reasons that brought them here,
which were other than, you know, church and faith and
the gospel. And so there's a high competition culture in
the church world, or at least there has been. And
so that's something that we're, you know, seeking to break
down over this kind of stacking hands together as pastors
(06:17):
and leaders and caring together about the city instead of
our individual churches.
S1 (06:22):
Is it a community, as you were saying, that I
know eventually people will get disillusioned by what they came
for and then they will leave. Is it is it
a transient community, or is Miami more of a. We've
been here forever. We've built our family here and we're
staying here. Who who are you finding in Miami?
S4 (06:42):
So I would say it's both. It depends on the neighborhood.
There are neighborhoods, especially the farther you go outside the
city where people have been here for a long time
and they're rooted. But the closer you get to the
urban core, it is highly transient. Some of our churches
in the urban corridor of Miami, we see about 30%
(07:02):
of the church leave every single year. And that's a
consistent it's it started to slow down after the pandemic,
but then once the housing prices went up, it has
increased again in the transients of people just getting pushed out.
S1 (07:18):
So you're planting a new church every two years basically
is what you're saying?
S4 (07:22):
Exactly.
S2 (07:23):
Wow. Well, that obviously has its challenges in its own congregation.
But now you're talking about bringing congregations together not to
be the same, but to be unified, which is really
what Jesus talked about in his his prayer in John
17 that we may be one so that the world
may believe. So talk to me about the impact of unity.
(07:47):
Why is that important to strive for?
S4 (07:50):
Oh it's amazing. We have seen, um, ten plus churches
come together in the past year to say, let's take
a long road at unity by really just investing in
trust and relationship with one another. Miami is a very
event driven city. So over the years, most of the
(08:10):
church unity, uh, attempts have been around events which has
caused skepticism and made many people feel like, what do
you want from me? And what we're seeking to do
is to say, we don't want anything from you. We
just want you to come in, engage, find soul care,
find friends that you can share your ministry struggles with,
(08:33):
and offer free resources that might bless churches, um, in
given neighborhoods to connect together, to be better on mission
for the gospel and to navigate the complexities of Miami
by learning from one another. And so that's what we're
seeking to do. It's a long vision instead of a
quick hit. Multiple events. And we're seeing God rise up, um,
(08:59):
churches from all different denominations, all different sizes coming together
to say I'm in for that.
S1 (09:07):
But we don't believe the same thing. You know, my my,
my end time belief is a little different than yours. My, uh,
my my view of baptism might be a little different
than yours. Uh, some. We have some differences. How do
how do we unite under that?
S4 (09:22):
Great question. The main thing that we unite under is
our belief in Jesus. It is our belief in Jesus
and our heart for the city, and knowing that the
city needs the gospel as the power of renewal more
than our programs, more than our individual theological, doctrinal positions.
And in order for this to work, this community movement,
(09:44):
we have to be able to lay aside our secondary
doctrinal issues and say, when Jesus prayed that prayer in
John 17, he. It's not as if he didn't know
that there would be doctrinal distinctives and differences between the
churches that would come forth from Jerusalem. He knew this,
but he also knew that we're united under him and
in his name. And it's his church. And so that
(10:07):
vision of we unite around Jesus and we don't have
to compete against, uh, who has the right secondary issue
has been the tactic. And that's what all the churches
are leaning in for. But this also takes trust and
takes that time of really building connection as pastors and leaders.
(10:32):
And so you can trust each other in these, uh, endeavors.
S2 (10:37):
Yeah. Okay. So this is going to be maybe a
unique type of question. Pastor Carter Brown is with us
of Crossbridge Church in Miami, heading to helping to spear
up Church United Miami, bring congregations together. I just returned
from Turkey and there you can actually. And part of
what we did is the Churches of Revelation tour. And
(10:58):
so in revelations two and three, there are seven churches
that Jesus speaks to. And in every letter he most
letters there's a commendation. He says, this is what I
love about what you're doing. But then he often switches
and says, but here's one thing I have against you.
If we were to get a letter to the church
in Miami, what's one thing we can say? We're doing
(11:21):
great at this, but here's something we need to work on.
S4 (11:26):
Wow, that's a great question. I would say where we're
at right now, I think that the Lord would tell
us that our churches are being faithful with the resources
and the people before them. I think that across Miami
(11:48):
you can go to small churches, large churches, and the
pastors are deeply concerned for their people, their neighborhood. They're
trying to steward the little resources they have. Well. So
I think faithfulness would be the the accommodation where I
think we need to grow is to have eyes, um,
(12:12):
for each other and to learn to celebrate each other.
I think that there's still a spirit of competition, and
part of that is the the little number of people
that attend church in Miami. And so I think that
this is why Church United is so crucial and so important,
because every revival in the history of the world begins
(12:37):
with two things. One is prayer. The second thing is
a unity and a movement of the church. And we
want to see revival in Miami. And it's going to
take more than just faithfulness of my individual congregation. It's
going to take a commitment to be united with other
churches in prayer for the sake of the city. And
I think that's where we can grow.
S1 (12:58):
Well, you mentioned two things that come with revival. The
other thing is opposition. How how how are you preparing for.
How have you prepared for that battle?
S4 (13:09):
The opposition battle?
S1 (13:10):
Yeah. The enemy doesn't want unity through prayer.
S5 (13:14):
Yeah. Yeah.
S4 (13:16):
It is. Uh, that's all we can do is trust
on the Lord and ask the Holy Spirit to give
us wisdom and guidance. You know, James has been a
really encouraging book for me in particular, where he says
that if you ask the Lord for wisdom and you
do not doubt, he will give generously. And I have
found that when you press into the Lord, and through
the power of the Holy Spirit, you ask God, give
(13:38):
me wisdom, and you do not doubt. The Lord shows
up faithful every time in generous fashion.
S1 (13:43):
So if there's a church that has 20 people that
show up on a regular basis, or maybe a church
that has 200 people show up at a regular basis,
and this is the first time they're hearing about Church
United and this opportunity. What do they do? How do
they connect? How do they find the the help and
the the camaraderie that you're talking about?
S4 (14:02):
That's thank you for asking that. The the easiest way
would be to go to our website, Church United and
you can find connection pages there. If they just Google that. Uh,
the second thing would be is that we have an
event actually coming up next week for all the churches
in Miami. It's on May 14th at Crossbridge Pinecrest at
(14:24):
10 a.m. we're bringing in Glue and Barna to do
a state of the church and State of Miami to
resource churches in the area to better serve their neighborhoods
and their region with the gospel.
S2 (14:38):
Oh, excellent. So May 14th at Crossbridge Church in Pinecrest
at 10 a.m.. Pastors. Church leaders, you can gather there
to hear about the state of the church in your region,
and then to start that collaboration and coming together in
that unified fashion that Jesus prayed for in John 17.
This is an you. In an article in the Good News,
(15:00):
they called it. Or maybe you all called it a
kairos moment. What does that mean for you? Just as
we close right now, the moment that we're in and
the opportunity we have to unite.
S4 (15:12):
I think that it's a moment that we have to
take advantage of. You know, the world is looking at
Miami as it explodes and it grows and it has
global influence and power. And my prayer, my heart is
that when people see Miami, they don't just see South Beach,
they don't see the growing food scene. They see a robust, healthy,
(15:35):
united church that is loving their city well and as
loving one another. Uh, my heart is to see churches
of different denominations praying for churches of other denominations, celebrating
wins of what God is doing in the neighborhoods and
region of Miami, and that people come to Miami because
(15:56):
they want to be a part of what God is
doing here.
S1 (15:59):
Excellent. Well, Pastor Brown, thank you for your time today. Again,
we have a link to Church United, and that information
about that event, I'm sure, is that that website. All right.
So go to Eric and you can click into Church
United and find out about the event he was talking
about and how you can really find out more ways
to serve your community. If you're a church in Miami
Dade County.
S2 (16:19):
And don't forget Broward and Palm Beach Church United is
there as well. But of course, we've been highlighting the
new work God is doing in Miami. You can find
out about all of it at Eric. Org. We'll link
you to Church United.
