S1 (00:03):
You picked a great time to listen to mornings with
Tom and Toby, because we're talking about prayer on this
National Day of Prayer. I figured it's a great opportunity
for us to kind of start doing a little preview
of the Chattanooga Area Leadership Prayer Breakfast. And joining me
right now is Tyler Howell. He's an area director for Cbmc,
which is Christian Businessmen's Connection. Good morning Tyler.
S2 (00:23):
Good morning Tom. Thank you for having me.
S1 (00:25):
Oh so excited to just get to know you a
little bit more now. Now you are still kind of
new in this gig, right? So tell us a little
bit about you, your background and a little bit about Cbmc,
which some people here in the Tennessee Valley are still
learning about.
S2 (00:39):
Well, thank you for the opportunity. I am I'm from Chattanooga.
My wife and I live here. Lindsay is her name
with our four beloved and wonderful children. And, um, I
have a background in, uh, professional sales consulting. Uh, but
I got tied in with Cbmc about two years ago
or so. I started attending a one of our small
(01:01):
group teams. Cbmc is a professional ministry that focuses on businessmen,
marketplace men, evangelism and discipleship. Uh, and for many years
we have been helping with the Chattanooga Area Leadership Prayer Breakfast. Uh,
I started in September. It's my first year on the board,
(01:22):
and it's I'm very grateful for the opportunity, and it's
a real blessing.
S1 (01:26):
Yeah. Tyler, thank you so much. You're hearing from Tyler Howell.
He's with Cbmc. What a fantastic. I'll call it a
discipleship engine. I know it's more relational than that, but
if you're looking to grow in your faith, consider Cbmc
just they do it well one on one discipleship. And
it helps us grow as men in the body of Christ. So, Tyler,
(01:46):
thank you for that. But what I'd like to ask
you a little bit about is the prayer breakfast itself.
And now it's been going for a long time. Tell
us a little bit about the history of the prayer breakfast.
S2 (01:58):
Oh it is. This is the 46th year for the
Chattanooga Area Leadership Prayer Breakfast. It was established in 1978
with about 2000 men, women and students that are coming
together to pray for the community and hear an inspiring
story from a leader whose life embodies the values rooted
(02:20):
in the purpose of the prayer breakfast, which is to
encourage morality and ethics in our personal lives and professional lives.
It's been a linchpin of the Chattanooga community for many years,
and it's a morning of encouragement and connection and prayer for, um,
(02:41):
all kinds of different things, but particularly for our leaders.
S1 (02:46):
Now, I love the prayer breakfast. I just have to
say now, Tyler, I've only been in the community for
about four years now, and just each and every year
there is a speaker that speaks right to the heart
of whatever is going on at that moment, even when
we had to use the substitute teacher just a couple
of years ago. Right. Something happened. And and the person
that was scheduled to work, you know, got sick and
(03:07):
wasn't able to be here. So there's like a speaker
in reserve. And no matter what, the message that comes
out is exactly what we need exactly at that moment. So, Tyler,
I'm going to ask you a couple questions about this
year's prayer breakfast coming up here in just a couple
of moments, who the speaker is, maybe one of the
reasons somebody might want to pray about being a part
of it. But before I do that, what is the
(03:29):
date for the Chattanooga Area Leadership Prayer Breakfast this year?
S2 (03:33):
The date is Tuesday, May the 20th. Doors open. Breakfast
buffet opens at 6:45 a.m. the program will start promptly
at seven.
S1 (03:44):
The Chattanooga Area Leadership Prayer Breakfast is right around the corner.
We are in May and it's coming up on, I believe,
the fourth Tuesday. Tyler Howell is with us. He's the
area director for Cbmc, but he's also intimately involved in
the Chattanooga Area Leadership prayer breakfast again that date for
the prayer breakfast. It's a Tuesday, right?
S2 (04:04):
Yes, sir. Tuesday, May the 20th. Uh, doors and buffet
opens at 645.
S1 (04:10):
So like.
S2 (04:11):
40?
S1 (04:11):
Yeah. Thank you so much for that. 46 years of
history of the of the prayer breakfast. But, you know,
I want to just move history aside just a little bit,
even though it's a great and rich history. I'd like
to talk about this year. All right. So first of all,
who is the guest speaker that's going to be involved
in this year's prayer breakfast?
S2 (04:29):
We have former Major League Baseball World Series champion, uh,
Darryl Strawberry, the straw man.
S1 (04:36):
You know, Darryl's story is really powerful. Just, uh, the
way that, uh, he shares it. And I'm so excited
to have him here in the Tennessee Valley. Their sports
are a big part of this community, but also is
the Lord. And there are people that have this pathway.
And I'll just say this, Tyler, some people think that
sports is a ticket out, right? But Darryl will share
(04:57):
his story that that it that it may look like
a ticket out on the outside, you know? But there's
a lot of trappings that go with it that could
take you off course very, very quickly. Have you heard
a little bit of his story before?
S2 (05:09):
This will be my first introduction to his story. I've
heard him speak on a on a number of other things.
Little clips of him. He's very engaging, uh, and, uh, very, uh,
interesting speaker and obviously has a wide variety of experiences
in his life and, uh, a compelling communicator. I'm really
looking forward to hearing the full thing.
S1 (05:30):
Yeah, I am too. And, well, let me just share this, um,
and ask you this question. Tyler. Uh, we're hearing, uh,
you share a little bit about the prayer breakfast, a
little bit about the history, a little bit about who
the guest speaker is, but somebody listening to this and
just planning their month out, why would somebody why should
they make that decision to be a part of the
(05:52):
prayer breakfast this year?
S2 (05:54):
I know for me personally, throughout the years, I've never
left a prayer breakfast without having been moved in some way, um,
towards Christ and with a deeper connection to our community.
It's an incredible morning of connection with others. Fellowship of
encouragement and prayer. And there's great food too. So I
(06:17):
would highly encourage anybody listening if they have been before.
Please come back if they haven't been. It's a wonderful
year to get involved.
S1 (06:25):
Yeah. Um, it's great to get together with the body
of Christ. It's great to hear a wonderful speaker to
come together. Um, you know, just denominational walls down, just
uniting in prayer for our community. Very similar to the
National Day of Prayer, which we are enjoying here today
in our country. So the 46th Annual Prayer Breakfast is
on the calendar right now, Tuesday, May 20th, 7 to
(06:49):
8:30 a.m.. Breakfast buffet opens about 645. Breakfast is going
to be great opportunities to pray for our leaders and
for our area. That's going to be great. Darryl Strawberry
is going to be sharing a message that is designed
for you, and really pray about being a part of
it this year, and don't just come by yourself. Bring
some people with you so you can talk about that message.
(07:10):
So it's not just a one day event. And Tyler's
we're wrapping up here with you. I think that's one
of the things that I would love to see with
events like this, that there would be afterglow moments. So
it's not just we heard a great thing and then
we went back into our lives. Is there a way
that we can maybe filter this into our lives throughout
the week, throughout the year? Maybe something that Cbmc is doing?
S2 (07:31):
Absolutely. There's many different avenues to get connected to what
we're doing here at Cbmc. Small groups, peer advisory groups,
one on one discipleship, um, and the prayer breakfast continues. Uh,
check out the website Chattanooga Prayer Breakfast Comm. There's a
variety of different links on there that can go deeper.
(07:51):
Previous audio, a variety of different things that can, as
you said, afterglow, uh, as we go forward.
