I have a collection of fancy bath bombs and salts I’ve been given as gifts. But when I went to take a bath the other day, I hesitated to use them in case the kids got in the tub with me; I didn’t want to waste them if it was going to be a kid bath.

Because I’m so in tune with my relationship around money during my “$100K in 100 days” challenge, it struck me as a scarcity belief – which is what today’s mini-episode is about. Where do scarcity beliefs come from? And how do they hold us back?

Why didn’t I feel I could use the fancy bath bombs and salts? And similarly, why don’t I burn my nice candles? Part of it involves wanting to save these things for a “special occasion” – but honestly, we’re not guaranteed tomorrow. Why not enjoy them TODAY?

I did take a bath with the fancy bath bombs, and my kids did join me. And you know what? They thought it was amazing, seeing flower petals floating around. It became a beautiful, special moment, and a core memory for us.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

  • How technically, the bath bombs and candles were sunk costs; the money had already been spent, so where was this mentality coming from?
  • Part of this scarcity belief is me feeling I don’t deserve these things and that I shouldn’t have spent the money to begin with
  • Another scarcity belief: that I had to “earn it” and do something big that day to be able to do something nice for myself
  • The idea of “saving this for the future” or for a special occasion – which is an indication I’m living more in the future than in the present
  • Self-reflection: what nice things around your house are you not using? What clothes/make-up/soap/salts/ingredients do you only wear or use sparingly?
