Exploring New Boundaries – My Guest, Larry Gates, from Port Republic Maryland. He is retired from International Paper as the director of the production department and now an endurance athlete enthusiast.
“Limits are yours to decide.”
My guest this week was born with an adventurous spirit that wasn’t afraid to pursue his wildest dreams. After graduating college Larry decided to take a year off and went on an adventure of a lifetime. He flew to Europe and proceeded to do a bicycle tour for the next year. This adventure lead him all over Germany and Italy and he would survive off of finding people to stay with in exchange for work.
On his final voyage he found himself nearing the end of his road where he would be loading up to come back to America. His final stretch was not what he had prepared for and the course was a daunting uphill battle. Larry had promised himself that he would not walk any hills, so in a symbolic nature Larry continued to grind until he made it to the top after some encouragement from a local.
When he returned home his desire for adventure and challenging himself didn’t resolve. He found himself entering the Army as a Ranger. This hard work and self-discipline led him to his career and the love of his life. He of course continued to do big things throughout his life but it was after he retired that our paths crossed on the hardest bicycle race in America known as RAAM. You must tune in to hear how a moment spent on the side of a mountain in Colorado eventually led him to one of his greatest challenges after the age of 70! Larry is a true testament to what is possible once you start to believe something is possible and then you pout hard work and perseverance into action!
