Speaker 1 (00:03):
Hello and welcome to
another episode of Movies, colin
.
They're pretty good.
I'm your host, travis Studding, and today we conclude our Set
in the Snow non-Christmas movieseries with Quentin Tarantino's
eighth film, the Hateful Eight.
So, without further ado, let'sget into it.
(00:27):
So we open on a great, beautiful shot of the Teton
Mountain Range in Wyoming, whichis where this takes place, and
we get the opening credits overa snowy, snow-covered statue of
Jesus and we get thatNeomorocone score that I talked
(00:50):
a little bit about in the Thingepisode.
But amazing score Like just soperfect.
I even have the vinyl righthere.
Just a great score, very goodat tension building and mood
setting.
It's everything that a score issupposed to do.
(01:14):
We see a stage coach coming fromthe background into the
foreground and it stops for alone man out in the snow with a
pile of dead bodies behind him,and this guy is played by Samuel
L Jackson.
The character is Major MarquessWarren.
Basically, his horse got hurtand had to put her down, her,
(01:40):
him, I forget.
But the stage coach is tryingto get to Red Rock, wyoming, but
there's a blizzard on theirtail and this is why everybody
is kind of in a hurry andneeding to hitch rides and stuff
(02:01):
like that.
So, but the stage coach driversays like, hey, you got to check
with my passenger.
He paid for a private ride, soit's up to him really.
And so he goes and talks to thepassenger inside and this is
Kurt Russell playing John Ruth,a bounty hunter, and his bounty,
(02:22):
daisy Dommergou, played byJennifer Jason Lee, and he's
very like you know, has hisrifle on him and everything, and
he's like hey, hold it rightthere, like you know, put your
gun down, nice and slow, andwhat's your business?
Like what you know what's goingon.
And they just kind of explainthe.
(02:45):
You know, major Warren explainsit to him, just like he did
with the driver, but he does lethim ride.
And so, while he load up thebodies on top and start heading
on their way and this is wherewe get a little more character
(03:07):
building and backstory, all thattype of stuff and we find out
that that this Daisy Dommergouhas a $10,000 bounty on her head
and basically it's the reasonthat he's taken her to Red Rock
(03:28):
is to get to hang there.
You know, collect the bounty, the doctor could execute it.
And then they just have thisdiscussion on the difference
between the two of them asbounty hunters, you know,
because all Warren's guys aredead and she, you know he's got
(03:50):
her shackled to himself and youknow keeping her alive.
And then you find out that JohnRuth's nickname is the hangman,
and you know, whether it saysdead or alive doesn't matter,
because he's gonna make sure youhang.
I guess he likes to get thesatisfaction of it, I guess.
(04:12):
But here we get a nice littleneedle drop, something that
Quentin Tarantino's very good atdoing in his movies.
But this is Apple Blossom, apple Blossom, apple Blossom
jeans, Apple Blossom by theWhite Stripes.
And you wouldn't think, like inthis like you know Western in
the 1800s, that this you knowindie rock song from the 2000s
(04:36):
would work.
But it does Like it, like Isaid, he knows what he's doing
and he's really good at findingthose ones that fit the mood,
like just perfectly.
But after, like a short littlemontage set to that song, then
we cut back to the inside of thestagecoach and, like John Ruth
starts to ask like, hey, like doyou, do you still have it?
(05:00):
And he's like still have whatyou know, the letter, the
Lincoln letter.
And he's like, yeah, like I gotit.
And he's like, well, can I seeit?
And he's like has his head tolet him see it.
But he takes it out of hispocket and shows him the letter
and you know John Ruth gets out,is like reading glasses and
(05:20):
everything, and he's reading itand he starts to get like choked
up and he reads the last partout loud.
He's like Old Mary Todd'scalling.
He's like, oh man old.
You know just like he's likevery moved by this letter and
you know that, as one probablywould be from you know reading a
letter from Abraham Lincoln.
(05:41):
But then he like is showing theletter to Daisy who spits on it
and then, after she spits on it,warren punches her, which makes
her fall out of the stage coach.
But she shackled to John Ruthso he flies out with her but
(06:04):
while they're arguing andwhatnot about this, and the
stage coach says like hey, likethere's someone else out on the
road, like you know bythemselves.
And then now now John Ruth'slike extra suspicious because
(06:24):
he's like assuming that it'ssomebody who's there with major
Warren and that or that it'ssome you know plot to to let
Daisy go, and all this stuff andyou know so he makes makes
Warren put cuffs on which he'snot too happy about, but he does
(06:45):
like a blige.
So then we meet this newstranger out on the road and
it's the interest of himself asChris Manix and that he's the
new sheriff of Red Rock and he'splayed by a Walton Goggins.
One funny line is that once helike realizes that it's John
(07:08):
Ruth and it's major Warren, he'slike, oh, y'all having some
kind of bounty hunter picnic.
And I just thought that's afunny line.
But we come to find out that hewas part of the rebel renegades,
which is a group of southernersthat kept, you know, fighting
(07:30):
after the war was over, you knowso sore losers.
And but we also find out thatmajor Warren, during the civil
war, had a $30,000 bounty on hishead and it like slowly
lessened over the course of thewar, ending with like a $5,000
(07:50):
bounty.
But you know, no one evercaught him and all that stuff.
But it was put on him by theSouth like not just from the law
, just, you know, upsetsoutherners basically.
But the reason that he had abounty on his head is because he
was in a prison camp in Iforget I forget which prison it
(08:14):
was, but basically, like toescape, he burnt the prison down
, and so the Confederate armyput a bounty on his head and but
then, you know, we also findout that it wasn't just
southerners that died, it wasalso Union soldiers as well, and
(08:37):
so the he, basically he gotaway with it for the most part,
but you know, he also got likein trouble.
I mean, it's that that stillhappens in the military, like
especially when you're anofficer, you get in trouble, but
not that much trouble.
(09:00):
So they established earlier thatthey weren't going to make it
all the way to Red Rock becauseof the Blizzard.
But there's a place thatthey're going to stop called
Mini's Habitashery, where theydo stop.
They get there, they're greetedby someone, introduces himself
as Bob, and they're like, hey, like where's Mini and sweet Dave
(09:22):
?
And they're like, oh, they'renot here.
They left me in charge forwhile they're gone.
And but Bob Obi, the, thecarriage driver, and then Chris
and Major Warren all put thehorses and the carriage away,
and all that while John Roof andDaisy go inside.
(09:47):
They have to kick the door open, like they're trying to get in,
and there's like voices insideyelling like you got to kick it
open.
And so they kick it open, andthen then they're yelling at him
like you got to nail it shut, you know, and there's a lot of
overlapping voices all sayingthe same thing.
(10:07):
So yeah, if there's like a pileof wood and a hammer and nails
next to the door, they have tonail two pieces of wood just to
keep the door shut becausesomeone broke the latch or
whatever.
So John Roof's trying to getlike a run down of like who's
all there and so he's got totalk to like every single person
(10:29):
, because he's already like avery suspicious person.
But just the fact that he's gotthis famed $10,000 bounty
person with him, you know he'sassuming that someone's going to
try to break her free.
So we're first introduced toOswaldo Mowbury and he's an
(10:51):
English gentleman played by TimRoth, and he's very skeptical of
of John Roof and he's askinghim a lot of questions and he
asked to see like his papers andstuff to prove that you know
that he's not just likekidnapping this woman and he
shows, shows the bounty and hesays that he's going to be the
(11:12):
or is already, I forget, buthe's the hangman in Red Rock.
So basically you know he's theone that's going to hang her
once she gets there and standstrial and everything.
So now we see the other guysoutside.
They're putting the horses away.
Ah, that's good.
Those 2 girls, bob and majorWarren, take care of the horses
while Chris and OB make a line.
(11:37):
Basically because there's gonnabe a blizzard, they need like a
Bunch of like stakes, likeevery ten paces with a rope
inside, so that way they canlike hold on to that and not get
lost in the in the blizzard andbasic all that stuff.
So, yeah, they basically splitup and two guys are doing that
(11:57):
and two guys are doing that andthey basically have a line from
the, the house to the barn sothey could check on the horses,
and then another one from thehouse to the outhouse so they
can go take a shit.
So cut back inside.
And Oswaldo Moabry and John Ruthand Daisy are having this
(12:20):
conversation about thedifference between justice and
frontier justice and he's sayingthat, like you know, if you
know you, you know, say you'reguilty, you murdered people and
and this guy's bringing you toRed Rock, you stand trial, they
(12:46):
find you guilty and I hang you.
That's justice.
But if the family of thevictims were to come barge into
this, this establishment, andTake you outside and kill you
themselves.
That would be frontier justice.
(13:06):
And basically saying that thedifference between it is that
the, the hangman, is a, adisinterested party, basically,
so there's no emotion in it.
And it's like basically sayingthat the only difference is the
absence, the absence or presenceof emotion in the matter and
(13:30):
that.
But also like saying, you know,he's just getting real
philosophical about it, like youknow who's to say what's like
actually, like yeah, in the eyesof the law, one one's right and
one's wrong, but you know, morality might tell you Another.
You know what I mean.
So then John Ruth notices theone of the other guys in the
(13:51):
corner who's been, you know, alittle quiet, and he's like, oh,
I need to go talk to that guyand find out who he is.
And this is a Joe gauge playedby Michael Madsen, and he's been
sitting at the table writing inthe book the whole time they've
been there.
I go talk to him.
He says he's writing a memoir, basically, and Says that he's on
(14:15):
his way to Red Rock, to or no,he's going past Red Rock, but
he's gonna go meet his or gostay with his mom for Christmas,
basically.
And and John Ruth's like, youdon't seem like the meet your
mom for Christmas type, and he'slike, well, I don't know what
to tell you because I am,because that's what I'm doing,
(14:35):
and you know, a John Ruth's notreally buying it but there's no
like hard evidence To thecontrary.
So you know, he's kind of.
He's basically just to let themknow like I, I'm suspicious of
you, but you know, I'm justgonna keep my keep an eye on you
, basically.
(14:55):
So then he goes to talk to thefinal person inside that he
hasn't got to like meet yet andas a older gentleman sitting by
the fire, he goes like hey, likeI Forget what he calls him, he
calls him something.
And he's, you know, lifts uphis wrist and shows like the
Insignia is like general, I waslike, oh sorry, general like and
(15:20):
but he's played by Bruce Stern.
And he just like tells himstraight up he's like you're a
hyena and I don't want to talkto you.
He's like all right, fairenough.
And then you know close andleaves him alone.
Then there this interactions, interrupted by Chris and OB
(15:42):
coming back inside from the snow, and then we get the same exact
like Like you got to kick itopen, you got a nail it shut,
you got to use two pieces ofwood, you know, and everyone's
just yelling like over eachother.
It's just complete chaos.
But that will happen At leastone more time.
But once those two start gettinglike settled in and warm and
(16:04):
everything, chris and Mobri meetand because they're, you know,
gonna be working together in RedRock, so they get to talk and
and then at some point Mobriasks Chris, like about if he has
(16:25):
a letter from Abraham Lincoln.
And they're like what, he's,like what?
I don't have a letter fromLincoln.
Man Mobri's like, I was toldthat you had a Letter from
Abraham Lincoln, and he's like.
And then Daisy says like no,the other guy, the, the, the
black fellow.
But oh, that's not what shesays, but that's what John Ruth
(16:47):
says.
But yeah, you know it's notonly is it a period piece that
shortly after the Civil War,it's also a Quentin Tarantino
film, and so the N word is useda lot, unfortunately.
Then we cut back to the, thebarn outside, and Warren and Bob
are putting the horses up.
(17:08):
Warren's starting to kind ofinterrogate Bob because he's a
little suspicious, because, because he's just suspicious of
the fact that many, you know oneleft, and To put anyone else in
charge because, like that'slike her pride and joys, this
establishment.
But then back inside ChrisRecognizes the general and is
(17:34):
like super excited to meet him.
He's like starts fan-growingout about him, I guess because
he's just a big Confederate armystan, I guess, and so, yeah,
he's getting all excited.
Gets to talking to the general, you know, asked like why he's
traveling.
He's like, oh it's, you know,my, my son lived out here but he
passed away and it's been a fewyears and I just wanted to come
(17:56):
out here and like buy him likea nice plot of land at the
cemetery and red rock and youknow, that way he has like a
nice burial and all that stuff.
And after all this, then Chrisis like you know, let's toast to
your son and goes and get somebrandy from the table where Joe
Gay just sitting at and and thenshortly after the toast, bob
(18:19):
and Warren come back in and thenthis is where we get the other
time with them, like yelling athim to, you know, kick the door
open and nail it shut and allthat.
But as Warren's like gettinghis coffee and getting warm and
everything, he notices a pieceof like a red jelly bean on the
(18:42):
on the floor and he clocks thatand he looks up on a shelf and
notices that there's jars ofcandy With like an, an empty
space where it seems likeanother one should be, but there
isn't one.
But he doesn't say anything, hejust we just noticed that he
notices.
But he also Talks to Bob.
(19:02):
He's like hey, like so manymust have like a laxed on the no
hats rule.
And Bob's just like hey, likeyou're right, I'm not, I'm not
running the place the way thatshe would, but since there's a
blizzard, I figured, you knowthe, I'd let it slide on the, on
(19:24):
the hats, and tomorrow we'll gohatless, or you know whatever.
He's just kind of playing itoff.
And then major Warren goes overto talk to the general, who you
know, being a Confederategeneral, isn't too happy to be
talking to anyone black, and sotensions start getting high and
(19:48):
sees like they, these startslike yelling at him and stuff.
And then I think, just to easetensions, oswaldo is like hey,
like why don't we just split thecabin in half, like this can be
, like there could be the northside and the south side, and
(20:08):
then the dinner table is neutralground, you know, and and
everyone's just like yeah, whatever, like most, most people
don't care, it's basically justthe general who's getting all
uppity about it.
And then Chris tells thegeneral about the, the bounty on
his head, on major Warren'shead, like the old one that you
(20:32):
know, and he's like that's theone, like that's the guy right
there, and but then John Ruth, major Warren and Daisy is there,
but and OB is like hey, like Iknow, like, because they had
(20:52):
made a deal, they're like hey, like I'll help you protect your
bounty if you help protect mine, you know.
And so it's like alright, Iknow someone here is working
with her.
You know at least one personhere, maybe two, maybe more, but
I know like something, something's not right and like.
(21:15):
So we got to trust each otherand figure out who else we could
trust.
So then John Ruth makes anannouncement.
He's like, and it justannounces this is like hey, like
I, I know someone is liketrying to help her.
So if no one wants to just comeright out and say it, I'm gonna
(21:36):
assume all of you are.
So let me have your guns.
You know he takes everyone'sguns, you know, for the most
part very reluctantly.
When he's getting John Gage'sgun, that's who he takes first
and Warren comes up behind himand holds a knife to his neck,
you know, so gets all the gunsand then puts them all in a
(22:00):
bucket.
Well, first he like breaks themapart and or takes them apart
and then puts them in a bucketand has OB go out in the snow
and dump them in the outhouse.
And well, and OB is like, well, why don't I got to do it?
He's like because you stillhave your jacket on and you know
I forget what the other reasonwas so reluctantly he goes and
(22:21):
does it.
Then Bob makes an announcementsaying that the stew is ready,
so they start serving up.
Chris is trying to talk thegeneral to go sit at the table
and eat something and he's likeI'm not sitting there with and
word and you know all this stuffand you know just being a
difficult old racist man.
(22:43):
And John and Daisy are havingtrouble eating when they're
cuffed together.
So John gets annoyed enough touncuff Daisy, like just while
they eat, and but says like, hey, if you try anything I'm gonna
shoot you.
And so they're eating.
Ob finally comes back in.
(23:03):
He was like trying to get backin but was just like freezing
and no one could hear him.
But he finally gets in and like, says like I'm not going back
out in that shit again, and like, pulls some cow hide off the
wall and wraps himself in it andjust lays down, like right in
front of the fireplace and then, like Bob goes over and checks
(23:27):
out and he's like you good, youwant some stew.
He's like oh, all of stew later, let me just get warm.
Then they start Chris brings upthe Lincoln letter and then so
they're asking about it and andhe's like man, do you really
think that Abraham Lincoln, thepresident of the United States,
(23:47):
would be like corresponding withjust a soldier?
You know, and you know it'sjust like.
And then John Ruth's likedefending him and everything.
And then, but then Warrenadmits he just kind of laughs
and says like, yeah, it's fake.
And then most of them laugh andeverything, and even Daisy's
(24:10):
like that's a good one, warren, you know stuff like that.
Then, but then John Ruth's likesuper upset.
He's like it's like we likethat was a dirty, rotten trick.
And he's like oh, what, I hurtyour feelings.
And he explains like hey, theonly time that that black folks
(24:31):
are safe are when white peopleare disarmed.
And this letter disarms them.
And he's like call it whateveryou want, like I think it's a
dirty trick or whatever.
And he says something like it'ssomething you know, super
general and racist.
He's like it's like you knowthey're right about you.
(24:52):
People, you can't trust a wordcome without your mouth.
And he's like hey, like it gotme out, like this letter got me
on that stagecoach.
You know, I would have beendead if it wasn't for this
letter.
So, you know, think whateveryou want and and I know you
don't have the experience that Ihave to understand and you know
(25:16):
I'll give you the benefit ofthe doubt but it worked, you
know, and maybe you know, if youthink about it, you might
understand why.
So major warren gets up and getsa refill of the stew, but then
gets another bowl and takes overthe general and he's like hey,
like you know, can I, you knowyou mind, like if I sit here,
(25:42):
share a bowl of stew with youand or, you know, said something
, oh, yeah.
Then Chris is like hey, likeyou, leave him alone.
And he's like hey, like Ishared a battlefield with this
man.
And and then he turns to thegeneral.
He's like or would you deny methat too?
And he's like no, I suppose youwere there, but he's a little
(26:02):
hesitant.
But then, like, I guess it haslike a little bit of respect for
him, at least you know, andthen he's always sits down
across from him and then Bobgoes over the piano and starts
playing a silent night.
But the two of them start totalk about you know.
He's like, hey, like how's lifeafter the war?
(26:22):
And like you know, you knowit's good and you know, says
that you know he had a wife andbut she died.
The general saying this andlike, yeah, like we're both from
Georgia and you know she wasjust a great wife and you know,
just talking to like all thisstuff and just about his family
(26:44):
and everything.
But then I forget who bringshim up.
But warren says that he knowsthe general son is like what,
like you know my boy and butlike, since he doesn't know,
like what happened to him whenhe died and all that, he's just
like desperate for anyinformation on that.
(27:05):
And he's like, yeah, I knowyour son and I know I knew that,
I know the day that he died.
And he's like what?
Like, like you know he.
Then he gets up to walk awayand the general grabs his arm,
is like hey, like, like, do youreally know my son?
Like, and he's like you knowthat you know when he died.
Or is like, how would you, would you like to know?
(27:26):
And he's like, yeah, he's likeit was the day he met me.
And then, right after he saysyou know, is the day you met me,
takes a pistol out and puts iton on the chair, because earlier
I forgot to mention this when, like tensions were getting high
and they're yelling at eachother, warren like kind of
pulled his gun out or like wentfor his gun.
(27:48):
And they're like, hey, likeeveryone's like, hey, calm down,
you can't just shoot it on ourman, you know, and all that
stuff, and and Ruth saidsomething, it's like, yeah,
that's the thing with these oldguys is you can push them down
the stairs but and say that theyfell, but you can't shoot him.
And so you know he's startingto get him riled up and you know
(28:15):
gave him a gun, so now he's notunarmed.
And he starts to say how abunch of people came, came up in
the Wyoming looking for himbecause of that bounty that was
on him, including the generalson.
And then he's talking aboutlike how he was, you know.
(28:37):
But you know most of those guysdied because, you know, they
either didn't find me and ifthey did find me, then they
ended up dead.
And then he starts saying how, like he started like hey, like
just let me go and I'll likenever, I'll never come back, and
all this stuff.
And then he's saying how hemade him strip and it was like a
(28:59):
cold, cold day, like a coldblizzard and all this stuff, and
made him strip naked and walkthrough the snow and all this
stuff.
And then how he started likebegging, not for his life and or
anything like that, but wasjust like begging for a blanket,
just because he was just socold, and that's like all he
(29:23):
could think about.
Then he says like well, he wasbegging and he said he'd do
anything for a blanket, so Imade him crawl through the snow,
but you know, butt, ass nakedand basically, and suck him off,
you know.
And but you know he's beingreal funny about it, like and
(29:47):
he's, you know, just trying toget get the general worked up
and he's like it's like, yeah,he's sucked on that warm black
dingus and you know all thisstuff.
And then they basically workshim up to wear the.
The general grabs the gun to goshoot him, like he actually
(30:07):
does pick it up, and you know hedoesn't just like reach for it.
He picks it up and aims, butthen, you know, warrants way
faster.
So, you know, shoots thegeneral dead.
And now it's self-defense.
So he shoots him, uh, and bobquietly shuts the, the lid on
the piano and fade to black.
(30:29):
And then we get like the next, like chapter, because there's uh
like chapter introductions onat the beginning of these scenes
.
Uh, and then this one's calledDomourgoo's Got a Secret and uh,
we come back on with anarration from Quentin Tarantino
talking about what's going on.
He's talking about how they're,you know, taking the general's
(30:52):
body out to the snow and allthis stuff.
But the most important thingthat gets mentioned is that, uh,
while all this was going downand the generals are getting
riled up, daisy or someonepoisons the coffee, and daisy's
(31:14):
the only one that saw it.
So after the narration's over, daisy asks, uh, john, because
she's still on coft, and shesays, hey, like can I go play
that guitar over there?
And he's like, yeah, whatever,just don't.
You know, no funny business.
You know I'm still all, becauseI'll still shoot you.
And then, um, so she goes andpicks up this guitar and starts
(31:35):
playing, uh, a song called uh,jim Jones at Botany Bay.
And while she's playing, we see, uh, john ruth goes over to the
coffee pot, which we know hasbeen poisoned and daisy knows
that's been poisoned, and hepours a cup for himself and a
cup for ob.
She keeps playing and singingand, uh, we see both of them
(31:59):
drink the coffee and she alsonotices that john drinks the
coffee and kind of has like asmirk on her face.
And then he comes over to herand he's like hey, like you know
, that's the song you like tosing.
Uh, in the carriage, huh, likeit's actually kind of pretty,
just have another verse.
And she says yeah, and shestarts to sing it.
But then it starts to have likesome like stuff about john and
(32:25):
she ends with the line that saysand you'll be dead behind me,
john, when I'm in mexico.
And then so this is like allright, that's it.
And he picks up the guitar andsmashes it, and so some
interesting trivia that I mean,I think a lot of people know,
but maybe not.
(32:46):
Um, but uh, so the guitar shewas playing was actually a, an
antique, like actually from thetime period in the late 1800s,
and the way it was supposed togo, like yeah, he's supposed to
smash the guitar but the scene'ssupposed to cut, and then they
(33:06):
switched the guitar.
Um, I guess someone didn't tellkurt russell this, but or he
forgot, or you know, or what Idon't know.
But so you could actually seejennifer jason lee break
character during that scenebecause she's like hey, hey,
whoa, whoa, whoa, wait, you know, when he smashes the guitar and
(33:30):
she like even like looks, youknow, not at the camera, but
like, uh, like probably like theprop person or you know someone
, terentino, I don't know, butyou know you could tell like
she's a little out of character, but I'm glad that they left it
in because it still fits.
But, um, yeah, just, oh, thatthat just sucks, you know,
(33:53):
because it just destroyed thislike artifact, you know, but it
happens, you know.
I mean like the value wasdefinitely covered and
everything, but you know, thennow that's just gone forever.
But then, uh, chris goes andpours himself a cup of coffee
but right before he takes a sip,uh, john ruth and ob start
(34:21):
vomiting blood, just likeprojectile, like you know, it
comes out like all over thetable.
And then, uh, you know, basically saved his life.
And then, but you know, he'sstill like about to drink it.
And then, but john ruth, like,as he's like dying, says, like
the coffee, you know.
And then so chris like pours itout real fast, um.
(34:45):
And then, uh, as um, as johnruth is like vomiting blood,
daisy like turns to him and likelooks him in the face and
smiles and says, when you get tohell, john, tell him daisy sent
you.
And then he punches her andthey both like get knocked to
(35:08):
the floor because they're stillcuffed together or they're
cuffed together again, um, andbasically like wrestle is like
wrestling with her, and he getson top of her and like barf's
blood like right on her face, and but then she, during this
time, grabs his pistol andshoots him.
(35:28):
So you know, I mean, I guess, puts him out of his misery, if
you really think about it.
But but then, uh, before shecould shoot anyone else, uh,
warren comes up, puts the gun toher head and is like give me
the, give me the gun, or I'mgonna blow your brains out right
here.
Um, so she gives him the pistoland then he has everyone you
(35:49):
know everyone but her, becauseshe's cuffed to a dead body get
up against the wall.
And so they all go up to thewall and put their hands against
the wall.
And then, um, once they're allthere, he has, uh, he has chris.
He's like chris or manics, whatever, come over here.
And uh, he's like take mypistol.
And then he's like, well, pointed at them.
(36:10):
And then, you know, he's allconfused, like okay, like am I
not in trouble too?
And then he's like, uh, butyeah, he basically knows that,
um, the reasoning is like hey, like someone poisoned that
coffee, and I know it wasn't you, because you almost drank it.
So, uh, you know, I just stilldon't like you, but I know you
(36:33):
didn't poison the coffee, so Icould at least trust you a
little bit.
But he's like hey, like someonepoisoned the coffee.
Obviously.
And there's a couple otherthings are kind of funny here
because, like, I know thatthat's not minnie's stew.
And he's like, and he says, like my mom, you know, made stew
and like she, it always tastedthe same, like you could just
(36:56):
tell that it was her stew.
And my uncle also made stew andyou know, I also had that my
whole life and, um, while they, like you know, they were both
really good, I could always tellthe difference, like you know.
I could tell my uncle charliestew and I could tell my mom
(37:17):
stew, and he's like, even thoughit's been six months, I've
since I've had minnie stew.
I know for a fact that ain'tminnie stew, so or no, that is
minnie stew.
Um, so if you say that minnie'sbeen gone for a week, then why
is her stew fresh like today?
(37:41):
You know so, I know.
So that means she made it thismorning and that her and sweet
dave are somewhere dead out back.
And then he goes over to uh,sweet dave's chair and you know,
also points out that if he wasgoing anywhere that he would
have taken that chair with himand he lifts the uh blanket off
(38:04):
of it and there's a blood stain,he's like, and that sweet
dave's blood right there.
So, but then, um, bob's like, because he's, you know, he's put
, he's put most of this towards, towards bob, and because the
bob's the one that said that hemade the stew and like all that
stuff, and he's like, he's like,well, he's like.
You're throwing around a lot ofaccusations, but, but I
(38:26):
couldn't have poisoned thecoffee, because while it got
poisoned I was over playingsilent night said, says, uh, I
know you didn't poison thecoffee, but you're working with
whoever did.
And his final piece of evidenceis that the uh like, if you've
been working here then you wouldhave known about the sign that
(38:48):
used to hang over that on thatwall right there and it used to
say no dogs or mexicans allowedand um, and it hung up there
until the day she took it downand the reason she took it down
was because she started lettingdogs in.
Basically that minnie didn'tlike mexicans and there's no
(39:09):
that, there's no reason whythat's given um, but you know,
and bob, being mexican, wouldmean that, like, there's no way
that she would have hired himbecause she was racist against
mexicans.
So now that he's like, givenall the evidence he needs in his
(39:30):
eyes, he shoots bob and killshim right, right then and there
shoots him to the ground andthen goes over and blows his
face off, basically, but nowthey're like okay, so who did
poison the coffee?
And chris like just alreadydoesn't like joke age.
So he's like, I know, I know, Iknow who did it.
It was him like and uh, he.
(39:51):
He admits he's like all right, fine, like I poisoned the coffee
because I think he's gonna juststart like shooting or whatever
.
So he admits to it, uh, uh.
After that, like right afterthat, the camera pans down
through the floorboards and wesee uh chanting tatum in the
(40:12):
basement and he says, say bye toyour huevos.
And shoots a gun through thefloor up at uh, major warren,
shoots him right in the crotch, basically, and then he hits the
floor.
And then and this whole nextpart all happens in slow motion
major warren hits the floorscreaming in pain, uh, oswaldo
(40:35):
pulls a gun out and shoots uhchris in the leg.
Chris shoots uh oswaldo andhe's on the floor now bleeding,
and then it cuts to anotherchapter thing and then it just
says that we get like a littlecard, just says earlier that day
(40:58):
and, um, that's a stage coach,come in.
So we see the stage coacharriving at minis.
Like I said earlier in the day, four guys get out.
Uh, we recognize three of themas joe gauge, uh, oswaldo, mobri
and bob.
But then the fourth one, chanting tatum, we learn is
(41:21):
named jody.
And so the four of them arriveat minis.
Uh, they're driven by a maleand female stage coach driver
team um minis there.
Sweet davis there, her husband,uh, mini being a black woman,
sweet dav, like an older whiteguy.
(41:42):
There's another young blackwoman there, her name is jemma,
um, I don't know.
And then also another, uh,another worker there, I don't
know if they say his name, buthe's working outside.
So as they're inside, uh, beingall like sweet and everything,
um, uh, we see that uh, mobriand gauge like kind of wink at
(42:04):
each other and like give like alittle signal and then each of
them asks, uh for candy.
Um mobri, from jemma it says, hey, like you know, I heard like
you're the best jelly beansalesman in wyome, or something
like that, and uh asked for somejelly beans.
And then, uh, joe gauge istalking to mini and asking about
(42:28):
the?
Um, they're like hard candysticks basically, while uh, and
then bob's over by um sweet davwho's playing chess with the
general, who just was alreadythere when they got there.
Um, but after, uh, after theyget their candy, or I think
(42:51):
she's still up on the laddergetting the jelly beans, but um
joe gauge gets his candy frommini, mini goes back and is
talking to jody, who's being alllike flirty and gentlemanly to
her and everything.
Um, and then uh, joe gauge istalking to uh six horse judy,
(43:14):
who's the, the woman who was uhdriving the stagecoach, and uh,
basically, while everyone's kindof talking to someone, uh they
give the signal again and juststart killing people.
Uh, jody, uh channing tatum, hekills mini and the male
(43:38):
stagecoach driver, uh bob killssweet dav.
Uh joe gauge kills judy and uh,uh oswaldo kills uh jemma,
who's uh standing on the ladderholding the jelly bean jar and
(43:58):
gets shot.
And then the jelly beans goeverywhere.
So that's the, the missing jarand the jelly bean on the floor
that uh warren noticed when hegot there.
So, yeah, they kill everybodyexcept for the general who's
still there.
And then they're kind of talkingto each other like, okay, like,
do we kill this guy?
And uh, I think it's jody uhkind of sticks up for him, or
(44:25):
maybe someone else does too.
But uh, yeah, they like stickup for him because, um, they, it
makes it seem more realistic ifthere's another person there.
And so jody goes and talks tohim and he's like, hey, like
this is the deal.
Uh, some guys come in with mysister and they're gonna hang
(44:49):
her and we're gonna save her.
So, like, if you have anyproblem with us stopping that,
let me know.
And he's like I don't care, Idon't care about her, I don't
care about you, I don't careabout that guy.
So just leave me out of it, andyou know, and I'll stay out of
(45:12):
it, you know, whatever.
And so he's like all right, youknow, I'll, uh, that's a good
answer.
So you can, you can live, youknow, just keep your mouth shut
and otherwise one of us willkill you, you know.
So they, uh, they spend likefour hours, uh, just getting the
place ready, you know, makingit look like there's the one
(45:33):
that are supposed to be there, and cleaning up all the blood
and shit.
Um, oh, yeah, because joe gaugealso went outside and killed
the, uh, the, the stable handthat was outside, uh, and he's
like, oh man, like whateverproblem you had with with them,
like I just started working here, it's that.
You know, I have nothing to dowith it, but you know, these
(45:53):
guys are just uh, ruthlesskillers, so it doesn't matter to
them.
You know, all they care aboutis their, uh, well, their sister
and or friend, daisy.
But, um, it's cool because thenwe get the, the scene where uh
they first arrive, um, just froma different perspective, so we
(46:17):
could see, uh this time, thatwhat we couldn't see before, um
is how, uh, they're kind ofgiving some signals to uh daisy.
Daisy obviously recognizes allof them and then, but she's also
letting them know because, uh,joe gauge is ready to shoot john
(46:40):
roof right then and there, while he was like getting coffee
, uh, and but daisy's like kindof, you know, lets it know, lets
it be known that the newsheriff of red rock is here,
plus this other bounty hunter, and so they're not alone.
(47:03):
And you know, basically it'snot going to be as simple as all
that, so you need to be patient, uh.
So then we uh get back to wherewe uh left off, uh, in the, you
know, in the present of thestory, and major warren's on the
(47:23):
floor screaming again in pain, and uh, then, uh, he gets up on
the bed and, um, we see that, uh, you know, he's bleeding pretty
bad.
Uh, chris is bleeding prettybad, but he's like walking
(47:46):
around with a chair for a walker, basically.
And uh, but he gets over tomajor warren's side and they
both have their pistols drawn onthe trap door to the basement
and, uh, they're basically liketelling uh, jody down there,
it's like like, whoever you are, like um, it's like you, you
(48:10):
know, come out a real uh, uh,blower head off, you know.
And and he's like, all right, like I'm coming out.
I was like, but don't come out, like too fast.
You know, just, uh, toss yourpistol, your weapon up first.
And so he tossed uh.
Or he's like, swings the dooropen.
Uh, he swings the door openreal fast.
Once they're like, uh, that theythreaten to kill a sister, uh,
(48:35):
so cellar door pops open, um,then they're like throw out your
gun.
And so he throws out one pistol.
And they're like, uh, um.
And then they're likewhispering to each other, like,
uh, he might have another pistol.
They're like, throw out yourother pistol.
He's like I only got one pistol.
And then uh, warren's like, well, you better shoot a pistol,
(48:55):
because if you don't toss oneout, then uh, then I'm gonna
shoot her.
And then, you know, here comesthe second pistol.
He's like, oh see, what did Itell you?
So then they tell him to come up, and he comes out with his
hands up and he's sitting thereand uh looks around and then he
uh turns and sees, uh, hissister, daisy, and they smile at
(49:18):
each other and you know calleach other like sibling names
and stuff like that and and asthey're having this like sweet
moment between like twomurderers, uh, his head just
explode, the back of his headjust explodes, because warren is
behind him and shot him in thehead and so he and then falls
(49:42):
back into the basement and thendaisy's screaming and they're
like why'd you do that?
Like he was giving up.
And he's like, oh, he took toolong.
And then, you know, he's justlike.
You know why, you know whatreason do I have to like be nice
to you at this point?
You know, plus, he shot me inthe nuts.
(50:04):
You know I'm gonna let him getaway with that.
So then, uh, joe gaige is stillover against the wall and uh, he
tells um, or warren tells himlike hey, like why don't you sit
at the table?
Because he just wants everybodylike in his, then their
eyesight, you know.
And um, I was walled, thoselike got back up onto one of the
(50:26):
chairs, like he's still alive, you know just very much bleeding
to death.
And uh, so joe gaige sits downat the table or I think he asks
like can I sit down.
And he's like, yeah, sure,whatever.
And so he goes and sits down.
Oh yeah, and where he sits is,uh, where there is a hidden gun.
(50:48):
We saw, like during the montageof them getting ready after
killing everybody, um, that oneof them hit a gun under the
table, so that way they wouldstill have one once they've
given up their guns.
So then, um, daisy starts to uhtry to uh negotiate with chris,
saying like, hey, like we'lllet you go and you can make a
(51:14):
lot of money by you know takingthe bounty for, uh, you know,
bob over there and all thatstuff.
And he's like, oh, why would Ido that?
And then he's like, you're,like, we're, we're gang members,
we're part of the jodydomingray gang, and like he
(51:36):
doesn't know who they are, butuh, warren does, and and he's
like, oh yeah, he had like a$50,000 bounty and all the
members had a $10,000 bounty, which explains why daisy had a
$10,000 bounty.
This is also where we find out, like the, the real names of a
lot of these people, because youknow, obviously they're just
(51:58):
using pseudonyms and everythingand pretending to be other
people, uh, so, uh, oswaldoMoabry is actually, uh, english
Pete Hickox.
Uh, bob was actually Marco theMexican and Joe Gage was
actually, um, grouch Douglas, you know, and some of them had
(52:21):
like bigger uh bounties than youknow 10,000.
So, uh, warren makes a pointsaying that, like, how are you
gonna get money off of Bob?
Like I blew his face off, likethey're not going to know who
that is.
You know, this is obviously waybefore DNA Uh evidence became
like uh usable or even likedetectable.
(52:46):
And then, uh, she's trying tosay that there's uh 15 other
gang members waiting in Red Rockand if, if we don't show up,
then they're told to killeverybody in the town and all
that stuff.
But they and the, the deal, youknow, is like he gets to go
free if he just kills, uh, majorWarren, and just Warren, like
(53:10):
at this point, shoots her in thefoot just to like shut her up
and everything.
And you know she's just sayinglike, hey, like you know, the
deal still stands, you just gotto shoot him and uh.
But then, when uh, so Warrenshoots her in the foot, um, they
uh go, uh, you know they try togo for him and uh, they end up
(53:34):
shooting Pete and Grouch, youknow, because Grouch, you know,
reaches for the gun andeverything and uh, but then
Chris, just you know, continuesto string her along.
They, you know, after theseother guys are dead, and then
you know it finally just says nodeal, you know I'm not, I'm not
(53:55):
doing a deal with you.
And then she's like you'regoing to regret this and that,
basically, is like this wholething is dependent on me
believing that you have 15 menwaiting in Red Rock.
And I don't think you do,because there wouldn't be so
much desperation here if therewas like other people waiting.
And she's like no, like youdon't know what you're messing
(54:18):
with.
Uh, my brother's got an army andthen he's like bullshit, like
my daddy ran an army, 400 menfor a lost cause.
And it's like I like this partbecause it's, you know, he's
like showing, you know it's notjust like pride.
(54:40):
And my dad, like you know for, because he admits like that it
was a lost cause, like, but youknow, and all this stuff, I
don't know.
I thought that was aninteresting wrinkle to it, but
you know, it's like you know youdon't know shit about an army.
Like my dad ran an army.
You know 400 men, like, and Iknow like you don't have like 15
(55:03):
guys out there.
But then, after, like he yellsthis at everything, he passes
out in the middle of the roomand it's.
And then so Daisy is trying toget over to him to like grab his
gun and uh, warren is stuck inthe bed.
Uh, you know, he can't movebecause he's bleeding out and
(55:26):
he's just like yelling, like youknow, like wake up, wake up.
Like you know, wake up, whiteboy, you know all this stuff.
And she's like desperatelytrying to get over there but
she's still handcuffed to JohnRuth.
So she like gets to where shecould get to like a uh, like, uh
, either like a machete or likeuh acts or something, I forget.
(55:48):
And she just starts uh cutting,uh chopping his arm to where
she could like pull, pull free.
And now she's like got his armlike dangling from a handcuff
and uh, trying to go for the gun.
But right when she gets likemobile, chris finally wakes up
and shoots her and um, but notlike dead, or like I think what
(56:14):
is he?
I think he shoots at her, butshe doesn't, uh, like he doesn't
kill her, right then.
But um, uh, she's about, he'sabout to blow her head off.
And Warren's like wait, wait,wait, don't, don't.
It's like what do you mean?
Don't shoot her.
He's like why wouldn't I shoother?
He's like for John Ruth likeyou know, he died like to make
(56:37):
sure, and you know he not onlysaved our lives from the
blizzard, but, you know, uh, sowe should like honor him by, you
know, killing her the way thathe wanted to and and basically
like that shooting her was liketoo good for her and uh, so then
(56:59):
, like, uh, it cuts to them, like uh, struggle into, like
pull her up on a rope.
She's got a new surround herneck and they're like got her
like up around like the one ofthe beams in the ceiling.
And uh, chris is saying, as myfirst and last act of, uh,
sheriff of Red Rock, I set inSioux to death by hanging, and
(57:22):
you know, and they're just likewatching her die, laughing and
smiling, and it's like it'spretty like without context,
it's like real fucked up.
But then it's like, well, she, she, you know, definitely
deserves it.
But um, well, you know, if, ifthe stories are to be believed,
(57:42):
but uh, so then after she dies, then they're just kind of just
lay in there bleeding out anddying together.
Um, but then, like, uh, chrissays like hey, like you still
got that letter.
And he's like, yeah, he's like,can I see it?
And you know, warren likestruggles to get the letter out
(58:05):
and they, they both just likeaccepted that they're gonna die.
And um, so he gets the letterout and uh, chris reads it out
loud and uh, he gets to the partwith the old Mary Todd is, uh
is calling, so I got to go andhe's like, man, that's a nice
touch.
And then, uh, yeah, and justkind of like zooms out and it's
(58:28):
like a weirdly beautifulpoignant moment, uh, where two
guys are bleeding out next tothe hanging dead body of a woman
and that they just executed, plus like five other dead bodies
.
So, yeah, then, uh, then itgoes to credits and we get this
(58:48):
like old uh country song andeverything and that's the end of
the movie.
So, um, but uh, before like Iwrap everything up, uh, I wanted
to point out because I talked alittle bit about it in the uh
episode for the thing, how, uh,not only was their recycled
(59:10):
score like unused stuff, for thething that any a more Akona
used for this, but a lot of theuh, um, like a lot of parallels
in the story and everything too, because I mean a you know Kurt
Russell and both the and theAmorakone score and both, uh,
(59:32):
it's a bunch of people trappedin the snow, you don't know who
to trust, and a lot ofaccusations and a lot of people
end up dead and it ends with twoguys dying who didn't really
get along throughout the filmbut are now like in it together
and uh, like kind of on the sameteam and dying together.
(01:00:01):
You know, just like, at the endit was uh, uh, keith David and
Kurt Russell, and then this one,it's uh Walton Goggins and uh,
samuel Jackson.
Um, I mean, you can even go asfar to be like, oh, one white
guy, one black guy I don't knowif that's like you know was on
purpose, you know who, withTarantino, who knows it could
(01:00:23):
have been but, um, yeah, uh, Ifeel like there's a couple of
other ones too.
But, yeah, I've loved this movie.
I got to see it, uh, when itcame out in the uh special, uh,
70 millimeter screening, so Igot to see it with an
intermission and it was theextended version, uh, which is
(01:00:45):
the version that's on Netflix, but the way that that it's done
on Netflix is broken up intofour episodes, like it's a mini
series which is easier forpeople to watch.
You know, like, if they didshit like that with, uh, like
you know, this year we hadOppenheimer and killers of the
flower moon, both over threehours long, uh, but you know
(01:01:08):
some people can't get over thathump.
I've never had a problem withthe length of a movie like that.
Like, I mean a little whenwe're talking about going to see
it in the movies, that's onething, but but like, when it
comes to being at home, like whogives a shit?
You know you're going to sitthere, watch a whole season of a
series, but you can't watch athree hour movie.
You know that's just me, butyou know I got.
(01:01:29):
I know people have like ADHDand you know can't sit still or
don't have attention spans, andyou know it's just not for
everybody.
Everyone's different, so nojudgment there.
But I know there's a lot ofpeople who make excuses that are
very contradictory to theiractions.
But yeah, I got to see it in 70millimeter.
Uh, it had the intermission.
(01:01:50):
Um, I wish I could.
Uh, I have like a little likeprogram that came with it too,
which was always always like thereal cool thing about going to
see stuff in 70 millimeter, because they make it like a
whole big event and you get aprogram and all that.
I have it somewhere along with aPhantom Thread one.
I don't know if I talked aboutit in the Phantom Thread episode
, but uh, yeah, this is I thinkthe first Tarantino film that I
(01:02:16):
saw in theaters.
I'd say like it won't be thelast, but he's only done one
since then and he's only doingone more.
So you know, but I'll try tosee the other ones because you
know a lot of theaters will dolike screenings of older movies
and everything.
So it'd be cool to go see uhlike Pulp Fiction and shit like
(01:02:36):
that.
Um especially, it would be coolto go see something at the New
Beverly and uh, la, because heowns that Um, and then he just
he just bought another one too,I forget which one, maybe the
Arrow, but it might be adifferent one, um, but yeah, a
great movie.
Um, I know it's like one of hismore divisive ones.
(01:02:56):
There's a lot of people thatreally don't like this one, but
I've always been a big fan of itand I think, um, but I just
like a, a who done it or amystery, and you know, and this
is, it's one of those and, uh,it's just really fun.
Uh, great performances fromeverybody and, uh, I just find
(01:03:18):
something like new every timethat I enjoy from it.
But, uh, great movie, uh and uh.
So, yeah, that's that's it forthat series.
Like I said, I was going to doone more because there is
