Aaron and Samantha convince Wimarc to return to the Alps to assist with their school’s protection while they ride on to rescue Rachel. After securing her from the Nunnery, they return to the destruction of the Western school to uncover the reason behind the assault. Meanwhile, the Master Guides in the Alps make preparations for an eminent attack.

Aaron, Samantha, and Wimarc infiltrate Pierre’s camp to disrupt their pursuit while enroute to rescue Rachel. In the meantime, the death of Pope Urban moves Pasquier to invoke the next steps of his plan for domination of the papacy. Meanwhile, the Master Guardians struggle with trying to find answers as to who is hunting them and why the deceased of the Western school are unable to communicate through the veil.
Aaron, Samantha, and Wimarc stealthily leave the temple-school to hopefully find and rescue Rachel. Entry into civilization presents its pitfalls, as Samantha engages in a risky tavern game, revealing her and Aaron’s Muein training. Meanwhile, “souvenirs” from the Western school assault lead Renier and Pasquier to the realization of the Alpine compound’s location, giving them another opportunity for an attack.

Elouan faces his father in a tribunal where he is forced to submit to the religious inquisition for his previous actions, while also dealing with the plague himself. Meanwhile, Rachel struggles to find a way to rescue him but is encumbered by the disease … as well as something more.
