(00:26):
insightful commentary on popculture.
This is Multiverse Tonight.
Now here's your host, thomasTownley.
Hello and welcome to episode239 of Multiverse Tonight.
I am, of course, your host, thomas Townley.
And well, it's a quiet day forme.

(00:49):
Yesterday my mother-in-law cameover and we did some yard work.
I also put the weather stationup and put a new bird feeder
that has a camera so I can seewhat birds come and go, and did
a little organization in thegarage.

(01:11):
I mean, I basically kept myselfbusy all day yesterday.
So today I'm just kind oftaking it easy, you know,
watching some Mystery ScienceTheater, having a little pizza.
You know taking it pretty easy.
Things have been going prettywell.
We've actually gotten somemeasurable rain.

(01:31):
We actually got the droughtindex back to dry, which is good
.
Weather would be better if wegot there a couple inches,
especially a nice sustained rainlike a monsoon would be great.
But beggars can't be choosers.

(01:53):
So with that, let's go on tothe Marvel Comics News.

(02:19):
And Marvel Comics News beginswith Jeremy Renner, in a candid
interview on high performance, shedding light on the reasons
behind the absence of a secondseason for the Disney Plus
series Hawkeye.
According to Renner, theprimary sticking point was the
substantial pay cut proposed byDisney Plus for his return as

(02:39):
the titular character, clintBarton.
He revealed that the streamingservice offered him only half of
his salary from the firstseason.
Now, this offer was deemedunacceptable by Renner,
especially considering what heanticipated would be an even
greater workload spread acrossan extensive eight-month
production schedule.
Adding another layer to hisdisappointment, renner also

(03:02):
speculated whether the reducedcompensation was connected to
his near-fatal snowmobileaccident back in 2023.
He openly wondered if Disneyperceived him as only half the
Jeremy.
Following the traumaticincident and his subsequent
recovery, renner recounted theharrowing details of the
accident where his massive14,000 plus pound snowcat ran

(03:25):
him over as he was attempting toassist his nephew.
Resulting injuries wereextensive and life-threatening,
including multiple broken ribs, fractures to his knee and ankle,
a broken leg and a brokenshoulder.
Underscoring the severity ofthe ordeal he endured Now,
Renner was careful todistinguish his frustration from
any animosity towards MarvelStudios itself.

(03:46):
He clarified that his issue laywith what he prescribed as penny
pinchers and accountants withinthe larger Disney organization.
He felt that theirsignificantly reduced offer was
not only unfair but alsoinsulting, leading to his firm
refusal to reprise his roleunder those terms.
Despite the contagioussituation, renner has made clear

(04:06):
that his affection for thecharacter of Hawkeye still
remains strong and he is notruling out potential return to
the Hawkeye universe in thefuture.
However, he emphasized that hisreturn is contingent upon
receiving fair compensation thatis at least equal to what he
earned for the first season.
He admitted that he feltdisheartened by the contract

(04:26):
dispute and the perceiveddevaluation of his contribution.
Nevertheless, he also offered asomewhat pragmatic perspective,
acknowledging that his body islikely benefiting from the break
and the absence of a demandingfilm schedule.
The first season of Hawkeye, which debuted on Disney Plus in
late 2021, was met with positivereviews and featured notable
performances from HayleyStenfield as Kate Bishop and

(04:49):
Florence Pugh reprising herroles Yelena Belova from Black
Widow and now Thunderbolts.
The series quickly gained adedicated fan base.
As at the time of Renner'sinterview, as at the time of
runner's interview,entertainment news outlet
Variety reported that theirrequest for an official comment
from Marvel regarding the statusof a second season and runner's

(05:10):
statements have gone unanswered, leaving the future of the
Hawkeye series in question.
Now let's go on to the DC ComicsNews.

(05:34):
Comics news, and DC Comics Newsbegins with.
Production plans for DCsuperhero film Sergeant Rock,
helmed by Lusa Guadaladino andstarring the penguins' Colin
Farrell, have been put on hold, according to Deadlinecom.
Originally slated to beginfilming in the coming months,

(05:54):
the movie is now expected toshoot next summer.
Studio sources indicate thatproceeding with a summer shoot
proved impractical due to theneed for a rushed prep period to
align with the optimal weatherconditions.
The film is primarily set to beshot on location in the UK and
filming outdoor scenes duringthe winter months would have

(06:15):
present challenges for the castcrew and equipment.
The news comes as a surprisethat Sgt Rock received a $65
million budget and a plannedAugust production start.
Several months ago, sourcesfamiliar with the project
reported that Guadagnino wasreportedly scouting locations
and that the film was inadvanced discussions with David

(06:37):
Johnson of Alien Rhymelis andMike Fast of Challengers to join
Farrell In this World WarII-set superhero action film.
Farrell was cast as SergeantFranklin John Rock, a character
created by Robert Kayer and JoeKerbert, who first appeared as a
World War II infantry soldierin DC's Our Army at War in 1959.

(07:00):
The character gained prominencewith his own comic book series,
which ran from 1977 to 1988.
Now Sergeant Rock is envisionedas part of the DC Universe
being developed by studio headsJames Gunn and Peter Safran,
separate from the world ofFarrell's the Penguin and
overseen by the Batman's MattReeves.
Farrell agreed to the lead roleafter Daniel Craig considered

(07:21):
it briefly, potentiallyreuniting with Guadagnino.
Following their collaborationon A24's Queer, the project was
also set to reunite Guadagninowith Jason Curtisakis, his
screenwriter on Challengers andQueer.
Guadagnino's next release isAfter the Hunt, a Me Too-themed

(07:42):
thriller for Amazon MGM Studios, starring Julie Roberts, andrew
Garfield and Ayo Adebri.
It's scheduled for October 10th.
The director has also beenexploring a revamp of American

Karn, among others.
Buzzy was an immediate standoutfor her character, gladys
Orenfby, a pretty spinster typewith a hairnet that she knotted

(23:19):
in front of her forehead andclad in drab sweaters and
dresses.
Buzzy's glass would appear insketches with Ari Johnson's

apparently obscene come-onswhile sharing a park bench with
Gladys.
Her response was always towhack him with her purse.
Buzzy's other laughingcharacters, including Flicker

(23:40):
Farkle, the youngest child onthe show's Farkle family, and

(25:52):
turn pencil strokes into livingbreathing.
I swear they're going to walkright off the page and punch in
the throat works of real art.
But more than that, they knewthat they were going to get an
honest answer from Butch, notsome canned, milky, watered-down
version of what they needed tohear the real deal.
He earned the respect of hispeers because they knew that
they could trust him and hiswork.

(26:13):
Artwork once laid down on paperor canvas or whatever medium he
was working with at the time,is solid, and the proof is that
the end result a man's word, whatever you can put Now.
Geist began his career withfanzine work and his first

(26:37):
published artwork came from1982's the Crusaders, although
he has done ghost work with PatBroderick in ROM, annual no 1.
Marvel editor Al Milgramnoticed his work on fanzines and
his work on ROM and decided togive him some work with Geist,

(26:58):
He ended up drawing up the next10 issues of the book, all the

Superman comics since theSilver Age, showed exactly what
he could do on comics.
First, superhero Geis' issuesof action were great, his

(27:42):
detailed line work and stylereally gelling with the book,
and he was responsible for theeradicator issues of action
comics during Reign of theSuperman and was able to do a
fantastic job with his darkerversion of the man of Steel.
Geis' work on Superman broughthim to the masses, who jumped on
the book because of the deathof Superman, with an entire new

(28:02):
generation of comic fans gettingto see what all the fuss was
about with his work.
Geis' best work for a lot offans was Resurrection man,
written by the team of DanAbnett and Andy Lanning.
Resurrection man followed MitchShelley, a man who resurrected
after he died, with a differentsuperpower each time.
Resurrection man ran through1997 to 1999 for 28 issues

(28:27):
numbers 1 through 27 and 1million and Geis' work really
gave the book its own visualidentity.
Geis was the kind of artist hiswork seemed simple, but his
style was one of a kind.
Geis worked with some of thebest modern writers in the
history of the modern comic bookmedium Mark Waid, brian Michael
Bendis, chris Claremont, warrenEllis, abnett and Lanning, and
