Speaker 2 (12:17):
Let's go to the
Marvel News begins with Kevin
Feige discussing Marvel Studios'past present and future with
(12:40):
Kevin Feige, discussing MarvelStudios' past, present and
future.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
Kevin Feige, head of
Marvel Studios, recently offered
insights into the studio'strajectory in a rare candidate
interview at the Marvel officesin Burbank.
He revealed ambitious plans forthe MCU extending seven years
into the future, a departurefrom the traditional five-year
outlook now reaching 2032.
Addressing the too-much-contentera, feige acknowledged that
(13:06):
the post-Adventures Endgame erasaw a significant increase in
content.
While Marvel produced 50 hoursof stories from 2007 to 2019,
the six years since Endgame hasyielded over 100 hours of
content, including 127 hours forthe multiverse saga, including
animation.
Instead, this rapid expansion, partially driven by Disney+, led
(13:27):
to an overabundance of supplyrather than a drop in demand,
leaving audiences feelingoverwhelmed.
Feige emphasized his beliefthat this quanti-trumps-quality
approach, which Marvel hashistorically avoided, was a core
issue.
He cites the success of DCStudios' Superman as evidence
against superhero fatigue.
He cites the success of DCStudios' Superman as evidence
against superhero fatigue, highlighting the quality of the
film.
Now shifting focus less TV,more focused films.
(13:51):
To address these challenges, marvel is significantly scaling
back its television output tojust one live-action show per
year, and these shows will haveless overlap with the feature
films.
The goal is to remove theexpectation that audiences need
(14:11):
to watch everything tounderstand any given MCU project
.
Feige referenced earlier TVshows like Daredevil and Agents
of SHIELD, which had a losercanon to the films, as a model
that they're returning to.
While some character crossoverswill still occur, such as
Punisher appearing in both a TVspecial and Spider-Man, the
overall volume will be much less.
Now this reduction has led todelays for completed projects
like Ironheart and Wonder man, which Feige dislikes.
(14:33):
Now.
Diversity remains a priority, but Miles Morales is on hold.
Feige affirmed Marvel'scontinued commitment to
diversity, evident in projectsincluding women, people of color
and LGBTQ plus characters.
He praised Iman Villani, aka MsMarvel, as exceptionally
casting and expressed excitementfor her future appearances.
(14:54):
However, he was more cautiousabout the potential for a young
Avengers project, saying it'spotentially on the horizon,
dependent on finding the beststory and character dynamics.
Now, regarding Miles Morales'introduction into the horizon
dependent on finding the beststory and character dynamics.
Now, regarding Miles Morales'introduction into the MCU, feige
was definitive Quote that isnowhere unquote.
(15:14):
He explained that Sony Pictures, which holds the film rights,
has requested Marvel stay awayuntil the animated Spider-Man
trilogy concludes in 2027.
Now the Marvel method willendure with cost adjustments.
Feige defended Marvel'sinterpretive filming process, or
plussing, where films arecontinually refined throughout
production.
Crediting Walt Disney for theconcept, he said that Marvel
(15:36):
never started a movie without afull script and is never
satisfied with the script, always striving for improvement.
He emphasized the value oflistening to actors' ideas,
especially those who have playedcharacters for years Now, while
the creative process remainslargely unchanged, marvel has
focused on reducing film budgets.
After ballooning costspost-Endgame, primarily due to
(15:57):
the pandemic and drive forspectacle, films like Daredevil
and Wolverine through theFantastic Four are about a third
cheaper than two years prior.
Marvel even consulted with theteam behind the creator to learn
about their cost-effectiveproduction methods.
The MCU feature is global andpost-Kang.
Upcoming Avengers films, doomsday and Secret Wars will be
(16:19):
produced in London's PinewoodStudios, a decision driven by
securing soundstage rather thansolely subsides.
The Feige anticipates futureMarvel films will return to the
US production hubs like Georgiaand New York, due to the more
competitive film incentives.
Feige also confirmed thedeparture of Jonathan Majors as
(16:39):
Kang the Conqueror, evenrevealing that the studio had
concerns about Kang's impact asa character before Quantumania
was released.
Robert Downey Jr will return tothe MCU to play Dr Doom, who
Feige believes has thelong-standing comic book
gravitas to be a majorantagonist.
Avengers Secret Wars in 2027will not only conclude the
Marvel vs Saga but also act as areset for the entire MCU,
(17:02):
including a new cast for theX-Men films.
While major cameo characters'futures are uncertain, feige
hinted at the return ofcharacters introduced
post-Endgame in future projects, embracing the comic book
tradition of charactersappearing anywhere.
He also teased a post-SecretWars film that will return to a
singular storyline by embracinga certain genre we haven't seen
(17:25):
in a while.
Feige also expressed excitementfor the Fantastic Four joining
the MCU among, aiming to makethem A-listers, emphasizing that
the film will be ano-homework-required movie not
connected to prior MCU projects.
Revealed his current interestin watching classic films from
(17:45):
the 30s and 40s, seeing them asa reminder of, quote, what
cinema is and how everything oldis new.
Again.
Regarding his own future, feigeexpressed a desire to continue
making big movies for bigaudiences for years to come,
saying quote Marvel's a greatway to do that for me right now,
but I hope to make big moviesfor lots of people forever.
Unquote that for me right now,but I hope to make big movies
(18:07):
for lots of people foreverunquote.
So yeah, I think that the youknow King was never the lead
story, as kind of BS yeah he was.
They wouldn't have included himin post-credit scenes and stuff
like that if that wasn't theway they were actually going to
go.
Frankly, I'm fine with orwithout Kang, but don't say oh,
(18:32):
we had reservations about it sowe just decided that wasn't the
way we were going to go.
Yeah, baloney.
Anyway, despite numerous falsestarts, mahershala Ali's debut
as the vampire slayer Blade isstill in the works.
According to Kevin Feige Quote, mahershala is still attached.
(18:54):
Feige told a room full ofjournalists gathered at Marvel
Studios which would see thetwo-time Oscar.
The project would see thetwo-time Oscar winner assume the
role originated on screen byWesley Snipes, who played the
part in the late 90s and 2000s,as well as 2024's Deadpool and
Wolverine.
Quote.
The obstacle was Ryan Cooglercalled and said we'd love some
(19:15):
costumes for sinners.
He joked referring to costumescreated by Ruth E Carter for the
abandoned Blade film thatMarvel commissioned, then sold
back to Carter for Coogler'svampire movie and we said take
him man, no problem, he's a goodfriend.
Take our costumes, we'll holdoff on the movie, unquote.
In all seriousness, feigeexplained that the prolonged
delays on Blade were a symptomof Marvel's overexpansion, and
(19:37):
how the executive characterizesthe studio's response to
Disney's mandate to produce morecontent for the Disney Plus
streaming service.
Feige has stated to use adramatic term like fallout to
characterize the resultingsituation, but for the very
first time ever, quantitytrumped quality.
Now he said a lot more, but wewon't go into that.
(20:02):
Anyway, spider-man Beyond theSpider-Verse has a new release
date of June 25th 2027, pushedback three weeks from its
original June 4th 2027 slot.
Now this marks another delayfor the film, which was
initially set for March 29th2024, but was moved due to the
2023 strikes.
(20:22):
The third installment in theSpider-Verse series concludes
the story of Miles Morales, whois on the run across the
Spiderverse and discovered aparallel version of himself.
Had become the villainousProwler in a New York City
without Spider-Man and rampantwith lawlessness.
His friends, including Gwen, may not be able to save him.
The first two films, 2018'sSpider-Man Into the Spider-Verse
(20:45):
, an Oscar winner for BestAnimated Feature, and 2023's
Spider-Man Across theSpider-Verse, have collectively
grossed $1.8 billion globally.
The intricate animation styleunique to each film requires
significant effort and a sourceclose to the production noted
that Across the Spider-Verse wasstill being worked on up to its
June 2023 world premiereindicating the dedication
involved.
(21:06):
Beyond the Spider-Verse isdirected by Bob Pruschetti and
Justin K Thompson.
The screenplay is by DavidColumn, phil Lord and
Christopher Miller, with Lordand Miller producing alongside
Amy Pascal, avi Arad and JinkoGuth.

Speaker 2 (01:06:47):
I'd like to take you
now on wings of song, as it were
, and try and help you forget, perhaps for a while, your drab,
wretched lives.
Here's a song all aboutspringtime in general and in
particular about one of the manydelightful pastimes that the
coming of spring affords us all.
Spring affords us all.
(01:07:14):
Spring is here, a-suffering ishere, life is skittles and life
is beer.
I think the loveliest time ofthe year is the spring.
I do, don't you?
Of course you do.
But there's one thing that makesspring complete for me and
makes every Sunday a treat forme All the world seems in tune
(01:07:40):
on a spring afternoon when we'repoisoning pigeons in the park.
Every Sunday you'll see mysweetheart and me as we poison
the pigeons in the park.
When they see us coming, thebirdies all try and hide, but
(01:08:02):
they still go for peanuts whencoated with cyanide.
The sun's shining bright, everything seems all right when
we're poisoning pigeons in thepark.
We've gained notoriety andcaused much anxiety in the
(01:08:22):
Audubon society with our games.
They call it impiety and lackof propriety and quite a variety
of unpleasant names.
But it's not against anyreligion to want to dispose of a
pigeon.
So if someday you're free, whydon't you come with me and we'll
(01:08:46):
poison the pigeons in the park.
You come with me and we'llpoison the pigeons in the park,
and maybe we'll do in a squirrelor two.
While we're poisoning, we'llmurder them all amid laughter
and merriment, except for thefew we take home to experiment.
(01:09:08):
My pulse will be quickeningwith each drop of stricken and
we feed to a pigeon.
It just takes a smidgen topoison a pigeon in the park.
Speaker 1 (01:09:26):
Thank you, tom Lehrer
.
Thank you for the music, goodnight.
