(16:13):
media to announce the news onMonday, writing in a Facebook
post that Shooter died fromesophageal cancer.
Quote I've just received wordthat Jim Shooter passed away of
esophageal cancer, which he'sbeen battling for some time.
I realize that for many he'sbeen a controversial figure in
the past, mostly with regards tohis managerial style, but my
(16:35):
experiences with him lay outsidethat realm and began with my
lifelong love for his writing, beginning with the first time I
ever picked up a copy ofAdventure Comics in 1967.
Born September 27, 1951, inPittsburgh, pennsylvania,

such legionnaires as PrincessProjecta, pharaoh Lad, karate
Kid and the 30th CenturySupervillains, the Fatal Five.
(17:23):
Quote.
For those who don't know, jimbroke into comics at the age of
14.
Let me say that again, 14.
I don't know about you, butwhen I was 14, I could barely
put sentences together on paper.
Wade wrote, quote during ahospital stay.
He'd been given some Marvel andDC comics and could clearly see
(17:43):
how much more exciting theMarvel comics were and wouldn't
understand why DC's bookscouldn't have the same vitality.
Having no idea how comicscripts were done, he literally
wrote and drew a Legion ofSuperheroes story on notebook
paper and sent it to editor MortWeisinger, who put him to work
immediately, having no idea howyoung he was until later Now,
(18:05):
the protege of then nationalperiodicals.

spinoff Dazzler, which Shooterconceived with Alex Donfeld and
John Romia Jr, with some helpfrom Stan Lee, al Milgram,
richard Stern and Tom DeFalco.
He implemented a quotecontinuity bonus unquote,
(19:07):
described by Shooter as thefirst incentive system in
mainstream comics to keepcreators on successive issues,
as well as life insurance forfreelancers, standardized career
contracts and a royalty systemQuote.
I fixed a lot of things, but mygreatest frustrations were the
royalties and artwork return, which were delayed by lawsuits.
I also increased rates, doubling them and then doubling
(19:28):
them again, because we startedto make more money unquote.
Now Schroeder recalled in 2010,.
Quote.
I tried to standardize andboost the rates up.
Superstars like Frank Miller hegot paid like the old guys
because he's Frank Miller.
I did respect the creativecontributions, like the age and
seniority of the guys.
I made sure guys who'd beenthere for 20 years weren't
(19:48):
getting the minimum.
I also respected genius unquote.
Now Byrne writer of AlphaFlight from 1983 to 1995,

That concept became MarvelSuper Heroes Secret Wars.
At the time, the biggestcrossover in the history of the
Marvel Universe.
The 12-issue series written byShooter, edited by DeFalco and

knew how to get to the heart andtruth of things.
That wisdom continues to informme both inside and outside the

music studio.
I am so grateful to him for hissage counsel and his
laugh-out-loud biting wit.
