Speaker 1 (00:24):
He's got the feeling
in his toe-toe.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
He's got the feeling
and it's out there growing.
Hey everybody, this is Jim Boge, and you're listening to Music
In my Shoes.
That was Vic Thrill kicking offepisode 69.
As always, I'm thrilled to behere with you.
Let's learn something new orremember something old.
So, jimmy, I got with familyover the weekend.
(00:52):
I was out of town, went to seean aunt and we were in the car
and we're listening to a 60station on satellite radio and
we got into this debate.
I'm not sure if it's a debate, but who was better, frank
sinatra or tony bennett?
(01:12):
Oh, to me it's hands down it'sfrank sinatra.
It's not not even close.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
So I mean yeah, I
would go.
Frank sinatra too, I mean meanTony Bennett.
I feel like here's thedifference Frank Sinatra passed
away when he did, and then TonyBennett suddenly was the number
one crooner.
He wasn't.
There was never a conversation.
When they were both alive, frank Sinatra was numero uno.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
I would agree with
you on that.
I definitely would agree withyou.
But I mean, if you look attheir work, everything that
they've done, my aunt honestlydidn't think that Frank
Sinatra's voice was all thatgood and I think it's fantastic.
Especially when you listen tosome live versions of songs.
He sounds great to me.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Yeah, I mean he had
his own style.
He would talk certain phrasesyou know it was more like his
speaking voice and then he wouldhit a long note or something.
You know.
He would kind of talk your waythrough the song sometimes.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
That he would do.
And then she kind of mentioned, you know, we got to the point
where now we just startedplaying Frank Sinatra, then Tony
Bennett, and we kind of wentback and forth and then she was
like, well, maybe, and then shegoes.
Well, what about Dean Martin?
Oh yeah, forget that so DeanMartin gets added to the
conversation and you know hedidn't really do too much his
(02:37):
claim to fame was Frank Sinatrabeing part of the Rat Pack yeah
that, that really was yeah, thatreally was it.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Now Sammy Davis Jr.
That guy was a greatentertainer.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
The Candyman Ken yeah
.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
No, he was an awesome
drummer, dancer, singer,
everything.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
I have seen him drum
actually.
He actually really surprised mewhen I saw him.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
I was like wow.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
It's kind of like
Karen Carpenter.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Yeah, I forget, she
was a drummer.
She was a drummer.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
She was a drummer at
first and then they didn't want
her to drum.
They wanted her to, you know,be out in the front singing
because she has that beautifulvoice.
But she would get on that drumkit and she could do some things
.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Yeah, I know it was
such an unusual thing,
especially for back then.
Yeah, I know that was such anunusual thing, especially for
back then.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah, I agree.
So when we were kids my motherdid not like Frank Sinatra
whatsoever, didn't like that.
You know he was, thought he waswho he was and that you know he
was connected and all of that.
So around my house Wise guyyeah, it connected to the wise
(03:47):
guys my mother would always callhim Frank snot nose.
That's how she referred to himand growing up that's all you
ever heard was Frank snot nose.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
I'd never heard that.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Yeah, but yeah, I
just thought that was kind of
cool just to kind of break outinto a, a topic.
Um, you know, frank Sinatraversus Tony Bennett and then all
of a sudden you know you've gotDean Martin in the conversation
and I really enjoy that stuffwith my family.
That's a cool thing ofdifferent, you know, family
(04:15):
members and differentconversations, of music and just
really cool stuff to me.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
So who was the fourth
member of the Rat Pack?
You had Sinatra, Dean Martin,Sammy Davis Jr.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Joey Bishop.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Joey Bishop.
You don't really hear about himmuch anymore.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah, and I think
Peter Lawford was part of the
Rat Pack.
Okay, and Peter Lawford, Ithink now don't hold me to this,
but I think he was theconnection to JFK, all right,
and I think he was theconnection to Dennis Hopper and
(04:52):
just a bunch of other differentpeople.
That's going off the top of myhead, all right, that I just
whacked myself in the head inthe headphones with my hand.
Oh, you got whacked as I'mtalking with my hands here.
Yeah, listen, I don't want tothe headphones with my hand.
Oh, you got whacked as I'mtalking with my hands here.
Yeah, listen, I don't want togo swimming with the fishes, so
maybe we should move on, yeah,Okay.
So I read this article onlinethe other day and it was about
(05:17):
the 10 healthiest andunhealthiest fast food
sandwiches in 2024.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
I know we're music in
my shoes, but this article kind
of fascinated me.
Like I'm into what is maybe notwhat's the healthiest, but I
look to see what's on theunhealthiest that I might eat.
So, I thought some of thelisteners might enjoy it also.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Like a badge of honor
type thing or like maybe I
should avoid that.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
As I'm when I was
younger, it would be a badge of
honor as I'm older now.
Maybe I should avoid that.
Yes, it's both of them, as I'vegrown older and wiser, as they
say.
So it's not sandwiches like hamand cheese, it's more like
hamburgers and chickensandwiches at a fast food place
(06:08):
the healthiest by far.
They're not on this list, butthere was another list I saw,
and I think all 10 of them weresome sort of veggie sandwich
where it was just veggies on apiece of bread.
We all know that's thehealthiest.
There was no sauce, there wasnothing on it.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Wow we all know
that's the healthiest.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
There was no sauce.
There was nothing on it.
We know that's healthy, butthat's not what we're talking
about today.
So the top 10 revenuerestaurants that offer
sandwiches are what make thislist.
That's how they looked at it.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
And this is fast food
only.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Fast food, and I'm
going to name the 10 restaurants
that they looked at Starbucks,KFC, Burger King, McDonald's,
Chick-fil-A, Subway, Wendy's,Popeyes, Jack-in-the-Box and
Firehouse Subs.
Wow, Now, the first thing thatand Firehouse Subs.
Wow, Now the first thing that Iwant to tell you.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
No, taco Bell.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
No, taco Bell, they
don't have a bunch of sandwiches
.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
You know it's more.
You know burritos, so this isrevenue from sandwiches.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
Yes, okay okay, but
Firehouse Subs I love Firehouse
Subs, I do, I do too, but I wasshocked that they made it in the
top 10 as far as revenueproducing for sandwiches.
I agree, great sandwiches.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
The.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Italian is my
favorite hands down there.
Well, we're not going to talkabout that because we're going
to go into the list.
They might or they might nothave some on the healthiest or
the unhealthiest, all right.
So I think we'll start with the10 healthiest fast food
sandwiches.
Number 10, the EngineerSandwich at Firehouse Subs.
It's a turkey Swiss provolone.
(07:56):
I like that.
That's up my alley.
Number 9, the Classic ChickenSandwich at KFC.
I never thought KFC would havea sandwich on the healthiest
list.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
So is it a grilled
chicken sandwich maybe?
Speaker 2 (08:12):
I think it is.
I don't know, when I go to KFCI don't get a sandwich.
That's not what I'm getting, but I think it must be.
Number eight the grilledchicken sandwich at Chick-fil-A.
Number seven the hero sandwichat Firehouse Subs, and that is
(08:32):
roast beef, turkey ham andprovolone.
All right, another combinationthat I like.
Number six the Chick-fil-Asandwich, which is the number
one on their menu.
We just order number one.
You get a Chick-fil-A, thefries and the drink.
I mean, that's their mostpopular.
That's the sixth mosthealthiest fast food sandwich.
(08:58):
Number five, and correct me ifI'm wrong.
You know I always havesomething that I struggle with
the word.
And correct me if I'm wrong.
You know I always havesomething that I struggle with
the word.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
The Asiago Ranch
Classic Chicken Club.
Okay, that's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
From Wendy's.
Now, what surprised me aboutthis is usually anything with
ranch makes it unhealthy.
So the fact that thisparticular one, you know
whatever ranch they use, ormaybe they don't put a ton on, I
don't know.
Number four the deluxe sandwichat Chick-fil-A, which I think
(09:33):
is just the chicken with likelettuce and tomato.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
Yeah, lettuce and
tomato.
Oh, and you know what?
I think the deluxe actually hascheese on it too.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Oh, does it.
Yeah, oh, okay.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Because I know that,
because I often order a
Chick-fil-A sandwich withlettuce and tomato and they're
like, oh, you want a deluxe.
And I'm like I don't want thecheese on it.
I like cheese on a cheeseburgerand a sandwich, but on a
Chick-fil-A I don't like it.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Yeah, I don't think I
want cheese on my chicken
either.
Now I sound like I'm doing aBarenaked Lady song or something
.
Chickeny China, yeah.
Number three the Cajun ChickenSandwich at Firehouse Subs.
Number two the New York SteamerSandwich at Firehouse Subs.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
Wow, this place is a
health food joint.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
Now, if you ever had
it, it's the corned beef and
pastrami with provolone.
It's actually really good.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
It sounds great and
are you sure this is the
healthiest list.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
This is the
healthiest list.
Okay, that surprised me as wellthat that was on the list.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Is this list made by,
like, the Beef Association of
America?
Speaker 2 (10:39):
It is not Okay.
No, Number one the sourdoughgrilled chicken club sandwich at
Jack in the Box.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
Oh see, I've never
been to Jack in the Box.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
I haven't been to
Jack in the Box in a really long
time.
I used to travel and when I wasout in California I would go to
Jack in the Box.
I don't know if they have anyhere in Georgia, do they?
Speaker 1 (11:02):
It seems like I heard
that they did come this way, or
at least close to Georgia.
I don't know if they have anyhere in Georgia, do they?
It seems like I heard that theydid come this way, or at least
close to Georgia.
I don't know if they have themin Atlanta or not, but I think
they have moved from just beingout west to being closer to here
.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
What will now happen
is the next time I see a Jack in
the Box, I will make sure thatI stop and have one of those
sandwiches, just so that I couldhave the healthiest sandwich at
a fast food chain.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Now see if I'm in LA.
There's no way I'm going toJack in the Box, I'm going to
In-N-Out Burger.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
And you're going to
order something from the menu
that doesn't exist.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
I've done that, but I
kind of just like the stuff
that's on the menu.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
It's a very limited
menu when you look at what they
have.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
You've got to be in
the know to really get what you
want, but it's just a reallygood basic cheeseburger and you
get the toppings you want on it.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
It's good, I've been
there.
I like it.
It's good Speaking of good.
That's what we just talkedabout.
Now we're going to speak aboutthe 10 unhealthiest fast food
sandwiches.
In other words, not very goodfor you.
Number 10, the Jumbo Jackcheeseburger at Jack in the Box.
(12:14):
I think when something startswith jumbo, that's a telltale
sign.
It's probably not good for you.
Number nine the Whopper withcheese from Burger King.
Oh, I love the Whopper withcheese.
I do too, and I usually get thedouble Whopper with cheese.
Speaker 1 (12:34):
I'm going to be
totally honest I love the double
Whopper with cheese.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
So yeah, number nine,
that's making me think.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
Sometimes I get the
double Whopper with no cheese,
just if I'm feeling healthy.
But maybe I'm not as healthy asI thought.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Yeah, After hearing
this list, maybe not Number
eight the Big Mac fromMcDonald's.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
Mm-hmm, another one
that I—.
Special sauce probably does youin the extra bread in the
middle.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Yes, it's smaller
than what it used to be, but
it's still the Big Mac.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
Is it smaller than it
used to be, or do we just
remember it being bigger?
They're all smaller,everything's smaller.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
I mean, I got a
double cheeseburger the other
day.
It looked like they had takencorrugated cardboard and cut out
round patties.
They were so thin.
It was just unbelievable.
Crazy Number seven the Meatballmarinara at Subway.
I don't go to Subway a lot, butwhen I do I get the meatball
(13:29):
marinara I normally get it withpepperoni on it.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Okay, yeah, that
probably makes it even more
unhealthy it probably does.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Number six, the
chicken junior sandwich at
Burger King.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
How are they getting
this list?
How is the junior sandwich lesshealthy?
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Because they look at
calories, they look at different
types of fats.
There's different things thatgo into this list to make it
what it is.
All right, Number five thecrispy grilled cheese on
sourdough at Starbucks.
I don't go to Starbucks, Idon't know anything about it,
(14:10):
Nothing at all.
I did see something funny theother day.
I was in Charleston in SouthCarolina and I saw like a little
mom and pop coffee shop andthey said with a sign it said
something to the effect of Afake mermaid doesn't make burnt
coffee taste better.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay, it took me a sec.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
Wow, that joke went
over really well.
I think it's hysterical, butmaybe you don't, maybe the
listeners don't.
I just found it funny.
Number four on our list theclassic chicken sandwich at
Popeye's.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
Oh, is that the one
that everybody goes out of their
way for?
Speaker 2 (14:54):
I don't know, I don't
get sandwiches at Popeye's.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
You didn't hear about
that whole craze a couple of
years ago that there were linesout the door at Popeye's for
their chicken sandwich.
No, oh yeah, it was a thing.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Really, yeah.
Well, it made it to number fouron our list of unhealthy.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
I mean, it kind of
explains why it's so addictive,
true Mm-hmm.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
Number three the
original chicken sandwich at
Burger King.
Speaker 1 (15:21):
Yeah, overrated.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
It's not very good.
No, number two the classicsmash jack from Jack in the Box.
Classic smash jack from Jack inthe Box.
It's a burger.
You know, smash away.
You know, take the ground beefand smash it and do all that.
Number two and number one thisdid actually surprise me, I'm
(15:42):
going to be honest.
The big fish sandwich at BurgerKing, now, it's not something
that I would eat, but I, in mymind, immediately think
something with fish is going tobe good for you.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
Now, is this the
renamed Whaler, or is this a
different sandwich and they gotrid of the Whaler?
I don't know.
I think they probably renamedit because I don't know.
You know, it doesn't sound verygood.
I don't know why they named ita whaler in the first place.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
I don't know, you
know what?
Speaker 1 (16:13):
Nobody wants to eat a
whale.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
No, I don't think so.
We don't even want the oil froma whale anymore, do we?
Isn't that what they?
Speaker 1 (16:20):
used to Did you used
to want the oil from?
Speaker 2 (16:22):
a whale.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
Isn't that what they
used to oh yeah, yeah, the Inuit
people live off that stuff.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
No, nor do I, and nor
should we, because it's the
unhealthiest sandwich, assumingthat the big fish is the whaler,
anyway.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Well, you know what,
Jimmy?
I'm glad that we shared this.
I'm going to take a look atsome of the unhealthy things I
eat.
Maybe you should also.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
Oh, wow, okay, I
didn't know, this was an
intervention.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
It's not necessarily
an intervention.
It's just that I care, andthere's just too many things on
here on the unhealthy that I eat.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
I'm just glad the
Italian from Firehouse Subs
wasn't on the bad list.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
There you go.
That's a good thing, Jimmy doyou know?
What time it is.
No, yes, jimmy, it's Music inmy Shoes.
Mailbag time.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Music in my shoes
mailbag.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
So episode 63,
Shangri-La over troubled water
Matt in Pennsylvania comments.
Matt in Pennsylvania comments.
Comeback is a great tune, matt,I agree.
He's referencing when we spokeabout the Jay Giles Band and the
1980 album Love Stinks.
(17:42):
I love that album and a bunchof people that I know that
listen to the show, that haveseen me have talked about Love
Stinks, oh good.
I know that listen to the showthat have seen me have talked
about love stinks, oh good.
And that you know that that's agood song.
That you know, uh, come back,or love stinks, or you know, you
(18:05):
know it.
Just, it's a great album.
I really, you know, when Idownloaded music for the first
time it was one of the firstcouple albums that I put on my
phone that I was like I have tohave this.
So episode 64, another week, another day.
Let's rock this episode.
We spoke about getting olderand health.
Well, hey, on episode 68, we'redoing the same thing with the
(18:27):
list that we just gave with thelist that we just gave yeah, and
a listener from Shirts, texas, comments Shirts, that's the way
I believe it's pronounced.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
Okay, that's cool, I
didn't know that.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
Not to be morbid, but
as I listen to your stories I
realize that I am closer to theend than I am the beginning.
This is a real email that wegot.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Yeah, wow.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
This is not something
that I'm making up.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
No, no, you never do.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
No, but I want to
make sure someone understands if
they're listening for the firsttime that someone wrote to us
and is really asking this.
I'd like to know your deathplaylist.
Seriously, I'd like to knowyour death playlist of songs
that you would want at yourfuneral.
(19:20):
Have you already built it?
Oh, wow, the answer is yes.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
Oh, really Okay.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
I gave my daughter,
jessica, a few songs that I
would want played.
She has it saved on her phoneand the other day I said, hey,
do you have that list?
Because I wanted to make sureshe had it handy.
And she sent it to me and it'scalled Dad Funeral Songs.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
Oh, okay.
Yeah, that's sad, it makes mehappy.
Oh, it makes you sad.
It makes me happy that she hasit.
Okay, it was a happy story.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
I'm sorry, it's happy
because of the fact that, not
that anything's going to happento me now or hopefully in any
time in the future, near future, but the fact is that the songs
they're ready.
Now they can make arrangementsand say, say, hey, this has got
to be part of what we're doing.
Yeah, so the first song, and itdoesn't have to be played in
(20:18):
this order by any means, justthese three songs.
I'll let up to them to figureout where each song you know
fits into the whole theme.
All things must, must Pass by.
George Harrison Song that talksabout, you know, even though
something is like this right now, it's going to pass.
(20:40):
It's not going to be that waylater.
Nothing's good all the time, nothing's bad all the time it
doesn't rain, all the time itdoesn't.
You know, sun's not out all thetime.
I think that's a fantastic song.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
I don't know it,
sorry.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
Broke Down Palace by
the Grateful Dead and it just
kind of talks about you knowwater and you know rest in your
bones and just a song again.
That to me is a good song inthe time of a funeral.
And then my final one, againnot in any order Hell yeah, by
(21:17):
Neil Diamond and it talks aboutthis is a song came out later, I
think it came out.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
So at your funeral
you want a song with the word
hell in the title.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
I had to think about
it, okay, but yes, I do.
Okay, this album came out, Iwant to say, in 2005.
I'm going to say it's about 20years old.
Neil Diamond hadn't doneanything in a while.
I'm a huge Neil Diamond fan, let's just put that out there.
But Rick Rubin wanted to dosomething with Neil Diamond and
(21:51):
to get together and he bringssome of the musicians that he
used when he did the you knowJohnny Cash thing.
Right, and this song Hell yeah, where he kind of talks about
were things worth it and doingthis and doing that, and
basically he just goes hell yeah, you know, it was all worth it,
(22:13):
everything was.
And I just think that that songis so inspirational.
When you're questioning thingsin your own mind, you know,
should I be doing this or shouldI go down this normal path that
everybody goes down or whatever?
And listening to that song justmakes me feel fantastic.
(22:33):
Now, when I'm in a coffin at myfuneral, I'm not sure if it's
going to make me feel different, but knowing that people are
going to be able to hear thatand the other songs and know,
kind of what I was thinking andwhat you know was going through
my mind and how I wanted them toremember me that final moment
(22:54):
that they get to view me.
That's the answer.
So I guess for you, do you haveany songs?
Is that something that youthink about or don't think about
?
Speaker 1 (23:06):
You know?
No, I have not thought about it.
I would say we brought up FrankSinatra earlier and I think my
Way is kind of fitting.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
That's a good song.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
And I love Sid
Vicious' version of it as well,
but the problem was SidVicious's girlfriend, nancy
Spungen, rewrote the lyrics totry to make them outrageous, and
so there's some stuff in therethat's just stupid and kind of
(23:44):
hasn't aged very well.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
Doesn't it at one
point to think I killed a cat or
something?
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (23:51):
And so there's a few
things in there that's like,
well, I definitely wouldn't wantthat played, but yeah,
something like that andsomething that makes people
happy.
I actually picked out the songs.
I unfortunately had a friendthat passed away just in the
past year and, very unexpected, and my contribution to the
(24:14):
service was picking out themusic for the service, and so I
just picked out, went throughhis playlist because he was a
huge music fan and found somethings that made everybody there
think of him and so that's whatI would hope People would just
play stuff that's like, oh, thissong makes me think of dad or
whatever.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
I like that.
That was pretty noble of you todo that.
I'm sure it was not the easiestthing because, you have to try
and choose these ones that youknow represent this person and
not represent necessarily whatyou think of this person or your
memories, but for for everybodyyou know.
So I've kind of cut out themiddleman and I've made my list.
(24:56):
Like I said, my oldest daughter, jessica, has it and you know,
should something happen, thoseare the three songs and if
anyone ever loses it andsomething happens to me, jimmy,
please make sure you just say, hey, let me listen to that
episode again.
Speaker 1 (25:11):
Yeah, everybody here
listening to the podcast.
You know you're on the hook.
If Jessica loses the playlist, you got to tell her.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
Yeah.
So again, I think you know ourperson that sent this in didn't
leave a name.
They are from Texas and I guessI should have asked what their
list is, what, what you know, ifyou're asking us and especially
if you're thinking that you'recloser to the end than the
beginning we are, I mean we'recloser as we get older.
(25:40):
Every day you get end up, youknow, at some point you become
closer to the end.
It's inevitable, unfortunately.
But I guess you know what aresome of your songs that you
would have since you asked it,and if anyone else out there has
any songs you know, please letus know.
(26:00):
We would definitely like tohear about them.
Let's move over to episode 65,vision Quest and Vineyard Vibes.
Paul in North Carolina writesVision Quest is an absolutely
(26:22):
epic movie.
I lived in.
Sp Carolina writes Exclamationpoint and that's cool to be able
to say that you've actually runover that bridge.
That's in the movie that Jimmynever saw.
That's really cool.
Yeah, I just find that reallycool and thank you for sending
that in.
Paul.
Friend of the show Vinny fromLong Island says another fun
(26:45):
episode this week Especiallyenjoyed the Morrison Hotel
backstory stuff and on that sameepisode we talked about
Morrison Hotel.
We talked about them taking thephotos for the album and then
we talked about it burning and afire, which I believe was in
December of 2024.
A special thanks to BuckleyVineyards for sharing the
(27:09):
episode on their social media, got a lot of people that
listened to the episode andhopefully some people are new
fans.
We do appreciate that.
That's pretty awesome, and ifyou want to contact us about any
of our episodes or you want totell us your funeral songs, feel
(27:29):
free by emailing us atmusicinmyshoes at gmailcom.
Please like and follow theMusic In my Shoes Facebook and
Instagram pages and I think, more than anything, if you can
share any of the social mediathat we do with your friends,
(27:50):
that would be great.
Speaker 1 (27:52):
Get them turned on.
Yeah, let's get more peoplefinding out about the podcast.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
Getting them turned
on to Music in my Shoes and
maybe they'll like it and maybethey'll want to write in also.
So thank you to everybody.
So, jimmy, a couple of episodesago you had asked if there was
an update on Matthew Sweet andat the time I did not have one.
(28:19):
But I just recently saw that hehas posted video of himself at
a rehabilitation center makingprogress and talking about what
happened from knowing all of asudden.
You know, I think he said hesaw like bright or white lights
(28:39):
and you know his hearing wasgoing and knowing something
wasn't right.
And you know this is in OctoberOctober 2024, when he had the
stroke and the video is.
It's really cool being able tosee what they do to help someone
that has had a stroke and theyhad a machine that, because of,
(29:04):
you know, not being able to move.
You know one side of his body.
This machine holds up your arms.
Know one side of his body thismachine holds up your arms.
The machine makes it so thatyou can concentrate on your legs
and not have to worry about thearms and and and different
things to really be able torehabilitate, you know so is he
getting motion back in thatother side of his body, or is he
(29:27):
just working on working withoutit?
he, he's getting, I think youknow where.
At one point he said he wasprobably never going to play the
guitar again.
He's kind of at the fact of Iprobably won't, but I'm trying.
(29:57):
I'm trying to do everything Ican.
He struggles picking up the arm, and the arm I mean that
happened in October.
You know he makes a livelihoodfrom being a performer.
And just to kind of see himtalk about it and talk about
what this rehabilitationcenter's done for him was pretty
cool.
It really was.
Speaker 1 (30:16):
Good yeah.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
Then we have Brian
Setzer, who is the
singer-guitarist from the StrayCats, who can't play guitar
anymore, and I'm not sure ifyou've heard about this.
No, he's got an autoimmunedisease and he says no pain but
(30:39):
feels like he's wearing gloveswhen he tries to play, and he's
just been able to hold a pen andtie his shoes.
Oh my gosh, and you know I meanthat just sucks.
Speaker 1 (30:50):
I mean no other way
to put it he's such a great
guitar player too, he is he is I.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
You know I saw the
stray cats in 82, you know a
long, long time ago, and youknow I've seen him do.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
He used to do that
christmas show with his
christmas show, the brian setzerorchestra right.
Speaker 2 (31:08):
Um fantastic when to
me.
When I watch him, it reminds meof all those great people from
the 50s, you know like you justget to get that same vibe that
same feeling rockabilly andswing and everything.
So hopefully you know hecontinues to make progress and
he can get back out there again, because I know everybody would
(31:28):
like to hear him and hear newmusic and see him out on the
stage.
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
I hope so.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
So, jimmy, let's
revisit some great music from
the past.
Let's start off with thetraveling band Who'll Stop the
Rain, double A Side.
It was a single peaked atnumber two March 7th 1970.
Love those songs.
So on the album Cosmos Factorythey released three Double A
(31:56):
Side 45s.
Meaning that they could havereleased six singles, but they
released three, just doubleA-side, which you have a lot
less in sales.
It's a lot different for theradio play what you're promoting
and stuff.
And I know that people used tosay something to him and you
know John Fogerty was just likeI don't care, I just want to get
(32:17):
the music out to the people.
I want to get it.
You know I'm fine with it.
I think you know, know, backthen people didn't look at the
financial end of it, but today Idon't think anyone would do
that no, and well you know whowas looking at.
Speaker 1 (32:29):
The financial end was
the record company, because
they got all the songwritingrights and publishing and
everything and he didn't evenhave the rights to play his own
songs anymore right, right, I, Imean, you're right.
Speaker 2 (32:42):
You're 100% correct
on that.
That's why they didn't try andtalk him out of anything.
Sounds like a great idea?
Yeah, sure, let's do it.
So Traveling Bands is athrowback to the 1950s.
You know the 1950s rock androll style and you know, maybe a
little richer I'm trying tothink who else, but you know,
(33:02):
it's just good guitar.
You know old style rock.
Speaker 1 (33:06):
Yeah, it's kind of
like Boogie Woogie or something.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
Yeah, real good song.
Did you have something else tosay on it?
Speaker 1 (33:11):
Oh, I saw them play
Traveling Band one time live on
a TV show and you know it wasjust an old recording of who
knows what it was.
It was an American bandstand, but something like that.
And they're playing live and itwas so good.
I mean, I just like his vocals, his guitar playing the bass and
the drums.
They were such a great band.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
Oh they were.
I definitely believe it wasgreat to watch.
His voice is so distinctive man, his guitar work just good.
Then you have Who'll Stop theRain, a great folk song that
asks many questions and it's notjust about the rain, it's about
(33:54):
just so many things that aregoing on in the world at the
time and I think you know rainis the metaphor for it.
You know who's going to stop it, and I read one time that he
played the song and his kid waslike, daddy, you're going to
stop it.
He's like, yeah, no, I don'tthink I'm the person that's
going to be able to do that.
But I mentioned that it went tonumber two on Billboard and it
(34:15):
was held off by the number onesong, bridge Over Troubled Water
, and I know we've mentionedthat on multiple episodes that
it's held off different songs.
It was number one, I think, forsix weeks and a couple of songs
that we've talked about overthe last few episodes have been
held off by that song.
Still, the rain kept pushing, falling on my ears and I wonder
(34:41):
Still I wonder Who'll stop therain?
The Guess who.
That's not who's gonna stop it.
That's the name of this band.
American Woman album came outin January 1970, first single no
Time, released in November 69and peaked at number five on the
Billboard Hot 100.
It was the first song on theirprevious album, so they released
(35:06):
an album in 1969.
It was called Can Wheat andthen they didn't like it so they
re-recorded it and put it onthe American Woman album.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (35:16):
And it became a hit,
went to number five.
Speaker 1 (35:20):
That's what Green Day
did with Welcome to Paradise.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
Yes, yeah, what was
the album?
It was on.
Speaker 1 (35:25):
It was on Kerplunk,
yes, yes, yes.
And then it was on Dookie.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
Much better on Dookie
to me yeah just total better
production.
The song American Woman and noSugar Tonight were released as a
single one on each side.
It wasn't double A side, it wasA and B yeah, on one on each
side.
It wasn't double A side, it wasA and B, yeah, but they were
both on it and peaked at numberone on Billboard May 9th 1970.
(35:49):
There's two versions ofAmerican Woman, also the album
version that starts the song offacoustically before the
well-known guitar riff kicks in.
You know, he's kind of somebodyyou know plays the guitar it
could be Bachman for all I knowand playing it, and then the
(36:10):
singer is, you know, singing itkind of slow and then all of a
sudden the guitar riff comes inand they're full into it.
The single just starts with theelectric guitar.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
As does the Lenny
Kravitz cover.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
Yes, the Lenny
Kravitz cover.
What year was that?
99?
, somewhere around then.
So that was definitely a goodsong.
I liked it.
I like the song, so hearingsomeone do it, it was pretty
cool.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
It fits him very well
.
He plays it in his live show alot.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
It does fit him.
I think you're right about that.
That's good.
So would you believe me if Itold you no, sugar Tonight has
two versions also?
Speaker 1 (36:52):
Do they both have the
new Mother Nature in them?
They don't.
Okay, that's the difference.
Speaker 2 (36:57):
Very good Album
version is no Sugar Tonight
right into new Mother Nature, and the single version is just
the song by itself.
The album peaked at number nineon the Billboard 200 album
charts Best album that they everdid.
Right there hands down.
(37:17):
Whoa.
According to my watch, it'sMinute with Jimmy.
It's time for Minute with Jimmy.
Minute with Jimmy.
Minute with Jimmy.
It's time for Minute with Jimmy.
Minute with Jimmy.
Minute with Jimmy.
It's time for Minute with Jimmy.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
Minute with Jimmy
Minute with Jimmy.
Okay.
So in 1990, 35 years ago, I wasin college at University of
Georgia and I worked at theradio station and I had a show
on Fridays.
It was called Fridays Only andwe did it live and we would have
album reviews and sometimeswe'd interview bands and at one
(37:49):
point somebody brought in thisreview for an album by Lou
Barlow who had recently left.
Dinosaur Jr Got kicked out ofDinosaur Jr and he started his
own project with JasonLowenstein doing these bedroom
recordings which nobody wasreally doing at that time, these
real lo-fi recordings.
But they put out an album with40 songs on it and they were.
(38:13):
I just fell in love with it.
Like it's just these reallygreat pop songs but you really
have to listen hard to to getpast the fidelity of it, you
know.
But you really have to listenhard to get past the fidelity of
it, you know.
And then they ended up you knowit was called Sebado and Sebado
ended up re-releasing the songsas full production, still like
lo-fi rock, but on their lateralbums.
(38:34):
And so a lot of great songs onthere and Sebado was one of my
two favorite bands of the 90s.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
And what was your
first favorite?
Speaker 1 (38:41):
Sebado and Pavement
were my two favorite bands of
the 90s.
And what was your first?
Speaker 2 (38:44):
favorite.
Sebadone and Pavement were mytwo favorite bands in the 90s.
I knew Pavement was up there.
Yeah, well, that was good.
I liked that minute with Jimmy.
I don't know a whole lot aboutthem so that you know when you
bring up stuff that I don't know, just like the listeners when
they hear stuff that they don'tknow that we bring up, I go and
I check it out and see what it'sall about, because you wouldn't
mention it unless you thoughtit was good.
Speaker 1 (39:05):
That's right.
Yeah, so this album was calledthe Freed Weed and again it's.
You know, it's them on acousticguitars, like in their bedroom
on a four track recorder andthen, if you like it, maybe
listen to some more Sebado.
They have a bunch of albums.
My name is Jimmy.
A bunch of albums my name isJimmy.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
The Psychedelic Furs
self-named debut album the
Psychedelic Furs was released onMarch 7th 1980.
Three songs that I really likeon this album.
The first song is called India.
I like that Two of my favoriteall-time Psychedelic Furs songs
Sister Europe and Fall.
Speaker 1 (39:42):
Oh, I was hoping you
were going to say Fall.
Speaker 2 (39:44):
Yeah, I love those
songs.
They are just fantastic.
Now, this is another one ofthose albums where the UK
version was different than theUS version.
There was a bunch ofdifferences on it, but these
kind of are my three favorite onthere.
Any other favorites for you offthis album?
Speaker 1 (40:00):
Man, I'd have to look
at the track list, but those
were.
Those are the ones that I wouldhave named yeah Fall I just
that song it's.
There's no other song like that, you know, no, it's got this
like insistent beat and it hasthe horns in it and it's it's
almost like a rap, you know yeah.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
I wonder if they
recorded it like he did a few
lines at a time and then cameback and did it.
Speaker 1 (40:25):
I heard back then,
and I don't know if any of this
was true, but I heard thatRichard Butler would come into
the studio after the band hadbeen working on all the
instruments and that he would doone take.
He would come in after, youknow, being at the pub and he
would do one take and that wouldbe it.
Wow, I don't know if it's true.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
Well, again, we've
talked about it before.
His voice is a little gravelly,so I think you can get away
with stuff.
I love his voice, I love it.
Speaker 1 (40:55):
He still sounds great
to this day, he does.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
Extremely unique.
Speaker 1 (40:58):
Maybe even better now
, because I think he's kind of
cleaned up his act.
Speaker 2 (41:02):
That does help.
If you get some sleep and cleanyour act up a little bit, you
do sound better.
Buy a car and watch it rust.
Sisters, see them fall to dust.
They fall around In anothercrowded room.
Paint me like the shirt I'm in,honestly, sister of mine, home
(41:24):
again.
And speaking of home, it's timefor me to go home.
That's it for episode 69 ofMusic in my Shoes.
I'd like to thank Jimmy Guthrie, show producer and owner of
Arcade 160 Studios located righthere in Atlanta, georgia, and
Vic Thrill for our podcast music.
This is Jim Boge, and I hopeyou learned something new or
(41:48):
remembered something old.
We'll meet again on our nextepisode.
Until then, live life and keepthe music playing.
Thank you.
