Speaker 1 (00:01):
My Burbank Talks
presents another edition of the
Week that Was and the Week thatWill Be a weekly podcast
featuring highlights andcommentary on local events and
issues taking place right herein Burbank.
Now let's see what's on today'sagenda as we join our program.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Hello, burbank, thank
you.
Thank you for that nice roundof applause and how are you
doing this week, burbank?
Well, it was an exciting weeklast week, wasn't it, with the
election and everything.
But before we start, as always,we have a humble request that
you like this video and pleasesubscribe to the channel so
YouTube continues to recommendthis video to others like
yourself, and also think about achannel membership to support
(00:43):
us here at MyBurbank.
Last week's Word of the Weekwinner was Greg Schwartz.
The word was electioned.
Greg needs to send in hisaddress so he can send out his
gift card.
And here is a bonus.
Greg is also a paid member toour channel, so we will be
enclosing a special my Burbankgift along with the gift card as
(01:04):
a way of saying thank you foryour monthly support.
All right, let's get into.
Last week and Tuesday, ofcourse, it was election night.
We're going to bring up ourelection results from last week
also, so you can see them Ifyou've been watching our channel
at all.
Last week also, so you can seethem If you've been watching our
(01:26):
channel at all, you've beenseeing these on the channel, and
there were nine candidates forcity council.
Let's come down to three personrace.
With ballots still to becounted, my Burbank projected
current council memberConstantine Anthony to be
re-elected based on the votedumps.
Coming in the other seat isstill too close to call, with
Chris Rosati in front of JudyWilkie by about 600 votes.
(01:49):
Yes, it shows your vote isimportant Now.
Friedman easily won acongressional seat vacated when
Adam Schiff vied for the Senateseat.
Instead of running again, burbank Mayor Nick Schultz will
also be moving up the totem poleas he moves into the Freedmen's
Assembly seat.
All three won by convincingmargins against their Republican
(02:10):
opponents.
The school board saw theirmeasure A-B-Z win coming in with
around 62% of the votes.
At this point it only neededabout 55% to win and has
maintained or increased thatpercentage after every vote
dumped.
That means, with that win andthe passing of State's Measure 2
, there is a lot of money cominginto the Burbank School
(02:32):
District for improvements.
The board has promisedaccountability and we will make
sure there is just that movingforward.
While Emily Weisberg did notappear on the ballot because she
ran unopposed, she has beenre-elected for another four-year
term.
In District 1, loretta Connelldefeated Tom Crowder and in
District 5, armand Agahanianturned away challenger Annie
(02:56):
Markarian to retain his seat onthe board.
These are not official results,of course, because there are
still votes to be counted, butthey maintain the raised results
in every vote done so far as ofSunday night.
Two interesting things which Iwant to see play out.
One is the passage of CountyMeasure A.
(03:19):
It repeals Measure H, whichcompletely screwed over Burbank,
and we will now pay a half-centin sales tax for homeless
services.
Measure H was terrible forBurbank, with the city receiving
only about 5% back of the moneywe paid into it, causing us to
reach into our own budget toprovide homeless services.
Will we get our fair share now?
(03:40):
Share now?
It does not say how it will bedecided but unlike Measure H,
which has sunset clause, measureA can only end by a vote.
So we are stuck with probablyforever, as people will forget
about it and just be designed topay higher sales tax.
The other was State Prop 33that gave local cities controls
(04:02):
over rent control.
That did not pass, so we willsee what that means to Burbank,
with the council currentlyworking on their own version of
rent control for the city.
The last of the votes isexpected to be concluded by
November 26th and I think it'saround December 8th in that area
(04:24):
, or December 12th, which theycertify the election as over and
done with.
For those who watched our liveelection covers on YouTube, I
say thank you.
We initially had some audiodoubling difficulties in the
beginning, but got it worked outin our first live telecast.
So once again, thank.
Thank everybody very much forparticipating, for listening and
(04:47):
for giving us a shot on that.
Okay, let's come back here tothe, come back here to the full
camera shot here.
There we go.
So last Thursday Burbank HighBaseball team held their second
annual Appreciation Night forveterans.
It was a great night withveterans honored, some nice
(05:10):
raffle giveaways and highattendance.
Both Vice Mayor Nikki Perez andCouncil Member Zezette Mullins
dropped by to honor the veterans.
Before the game between GraceBranson and Burbank On Friday,
the first round of the CIFplayoffs saw the Burbank
Bulldogs defeat the MonroviaWildcats 47-42 at Monrovia, as
(05:31):
they continue their journey fora CIF championship, it was an
exciting game that even saw a15-minute delay for a power
failure.
The Bulldogs will now come backhome to Memorial Field to take
on Highland, who defeatedCerritos 21-17 in the first
round.
So go to the game.
Go to the game.
(05:52):

(12:11):
But I didn't say that.
Okay, we've gotten to the end.
Now Time for Craig's comment.
It'll be a short one this week,but I think it's something that
is important Now that theelection's over.
Let's end the hate speech now.
Okay, it is still great to haveyour own opinions, but your
(12:33):
opinion is just as correct toyou as someone on the other side
is to them Make a pledge thatyou will not write anything on
social media.
If your name is hidden, thatyou would not say to someone's
face in person.
I don't think it's really thattough to be a good person it
really isn't but because ofsocial media and everything else
(12:55):
, the way people have to hidebehind it, they think they can
write whatever they want towrite and not use their name.
And now it's okay to attackpeople.
No, it's not okay.
Hate speech is still hatespeech.
We all need to get along and dothings properly in this world.
We need to work together inthis city.
We can't attack each other.
So all I'm saying is, if you'regoing to say something, put
(13:19):
your name to it or say it tosomebody's face.
Okay, at least have the guts todo that.
Anyhow, that's my comment forthe week, not a long one, but
hopefully it's a pointed one foryou.
Please, once again, do notforget to subscribe and like
this video and please, as always, consider that membership to
(13:40):
the MyBurbank YouTube channel Tokeep us going so we can keep
bringing you this content.
That's it for another week.
For the week that was and theweek that will be.
This is Craig Sherwood from theElection Control Center.
We'll be back to our regularstudio next week for those of
you who care, which I doubt manyof you.
(14:00):
But what should I tell you?
Anyhow, have a good week, makesure you thank a veteran today
and let's be kind to each other.
All right, we'll talk to youlater.
Bye.
