presents another edition of the
Week that Was and the Week thatWill Be a weekly podcast
featuring highlights andcommentary on local events and
issues taking place right herein Burbank.
Now let's see what's on today'sagenda as we join our program.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Thank you everybody,
thank you, thank you, thank you
Well, hello Burbank.
Clay Shorty here once again forthe November 18th edition of
the Week.
That Was and that Will Be, and,as always, we have a humble
request that you like this videoand please subscribe to the
channel so YouTube continues torecommend this video to others
(00:42):
like yourself, and also thinkabout a channel membership to
support us here at my Burbank.
Last week's Word of the Weekwinner was JB Long.
The word was midnight and hehas won a $25 gift card, and
don't forget to continue tolisten for another chance to win
(01:04):
this week when that word of theweek pops up.
One last time.
Let's go back to the MyBurbankCommand Center election
headquarters and finish up withour election coverage.
It came down to a three-horserace and it was Judy Wilkie, the
(01:24):
odd one out, as Burbank votersre-elected Constantine Anthony
and Chris Rizzotti, who was notelected in 2022, but now makes
it to the dais in second place.
I fully expect to see Judybattle again in 2026 when we
elect three to the council.
(01:45):
I found the school board racevery interesting in the fact
that people seemed very upsetwith the incumbents, but when it
came time to the election, oneof them ran unopposed and one
was automatically re-elected andanother was elected by a wide
margin, which tells me thatpeople are happy with the
direction the schools are taking.
(02:05):
Measure ABC also passed and nowI challenge the new board to be
transparent and to make it workand to benefit all schools and
facilities.
There are a couple of sportsfacilities that really need
upgrading, as well as structuresin different schools.
We will stay on it.
(02:28):
On Monday we had our annualVeterans Day celebration at the
War Memorial at Cambridge Park.
We'll go back to our live feedagain and hopefully show you a
couple of shots from the day of.
Ross Benson was on scene andgot some great pictures.
I unfortunately could not makeit.
That's like getting a littlefood poisoning on Sunday and
(02:49):
being scared to go, scared todeath to go out in public on
Monday with no facilities inplace.
So I apologize for not beingthere.
I was disappointed.
I missed it, but I heard thecrowd was not as large as
expected, which is sad.
I can only imagine that morepeople must have ate the same
place I did on Sunday and thatmust be the reason.
I know the Burbank Highbaseball team was in attendance,
(03:11):
however, which I know ourveterans appreciated.
Let's move on now to Thursday, where we saw the new John
Stewart Green Lantern statueunveiled.
That was in a place calledHangar 28 at the Empire Center.
I have to be honest with youthat I have never heard of
(03:35):
Hangar 28 until this pressrelease came across our desk.
It's a magnificent statue ofthe Green Lantern, but I do
question as to number one, whyit is put on private property,
and number two, why it is put inan area that is not easily
accessible.
My only hope is that the GreenLantern could actually use its
powers to decrease crime at theEmpire Center.
(03:59):
I hear that there's anotherstatue still to be worked on in
Burbank, but we do have three, with Wonder Woman at the Warner
Brothers Tour Center and Batmanat San Fernando and Palm.
When will Superman make anappearance?
Police sent out one of theirrare press releases seeking
(04:20):
information about a woman whohad been impersonating a nurse
at St Joseph's Medical Center aswell as other hospitals in
Southern California.
It'd be interesting to know ifany of the people she treated
died, if they're now able tocharge her with murder because
of that and they did not say inthe release, so we don't really
know but then they don't say alot in their releases Friday.
(04:42):
I know it's not a Burbank story, but I fell for the stupid Mike
Tyson-Jake Paul fight onNetflix when it was over it
really looked like some58-year-old guy getting beat up
by a 27-year-old guy.
You kind of wonder how anythingelse could be really the result
.
I was happy, however, that Paulwas respectful in his victory
(05:05):
speech and they just enjoyed hispayday.
Not sure if that is.
They're not sure if that or theUCLA loss was more depressing
on Friday night.
But here's another part of thedepression for you.
That is Burbank local.
For Friday night and that wasFriday Night Lights saw the
Burbank Bulldogs fall to theHighland Bulldogs 42-18 at
(05:31):
Memorial Field.
Burbank actually led the game28-21 at halftime.
The loss ended the Bulldogsseason but was still as
successful as they took secondplace in the Pacific League and,
as far as Burrows goes, theyparted ways with their coach,
who was only hired about sixmonths ago, and now the search
begins for a new football coach.
(05:52):
Okay, that's it for the weekthat was.
We're going to have a quickcommercial break and come back
for the week.
That will be in a few minutes,so stand by and we will see you
in a second.
Speaker 3 (06:08):

Now back to our show, and wewill get back to you.
Now back to our show.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Yo, thank you, thank
you, thank you very much.
No, no, please sit down.
Sit down everybody.
Thank you very, very much, craig Schubert.
Back with you again for theweek that will be, and starting
with today.
So on Monday, we are recordinganother Ask the Mayor episode
tonight, Really looking forwardto talking with Nick Schultz
(07:07):
after his decisive victory inthe assembly race and to see
what's up in his last six weeksin the Burbank City Council
before transitioning to theassembly.
Well, what's funny about thatrace is that I saw him
campaigning numerous times anddid not see the opponent once in
Burbank.
If you want to know why theydon't get votes, I think it's
(07:28):
great having a Burbank residentat the state level and he will
look out for our best interests.
Also, today you can stop byromancing the beat at Ford from
four to 6 PM to talk to Burbankwater and powers general manager
, mandip Samara, about allthings that power Burbank.
So just stop by the chat andyou can ask questions or share
(07:51):
your thoughts on how BurbankWater and Power can serve you
better.
And I bet she'll even buy you afree cup of coffee, but don't
push it for a free scone.
Do they even have scones atRomancing the Bean, I don't know
.
Anyhow, as far as meetings go,the Sustainable Burbank
Commission will hold theirs on 5o'clock at the Community
(08:13):
Services Building, where theywill nominate somebody for their
Green Spotlight Award forJanuary of 2025 and discuss the
meeting schedule for 2025.
And besides that, only their adhoc committees will report at
that time.
Well, I'll tell you to go tothe Planning Commission meeting
(08:34):
afterwards, but the PlanningCommission meeting has been
canceled, so I guess there'snothing on Monday that needs to
be planned.
Right, everything has beenplanned.
That needs to be planned.
Alrighty, let's move on toTuesday.
So Tuesday is a city councilnight.
Tuesday brings city councilsback after a three-week absence,
(08:57):
and they're going to have ajoint meeting with the parking
authority.
Side note, the city council isalso the parking authority, so
it's nothing really more thanlegal speak.
So let me clue you in here thatthe meeting is actually broken
up into two parts, with thefirst part coming at 4.30, where
(09:19):
they're going to get twodifferent study session reports
On number one, the general fundfinancial status as of September
30th, and also an update on thenew Burbank Central Library and
Civic Center project.
Now, if you want to comment oneither of those things, you have
to be there at four o'clock forpublic comment because these
two items are not part of theregular council meeting that
(09:42):
then starts at six o'clock.
Interesting that they do notput this as part of their agenda
, but we found found it, so nowyou know all about it.
So at 6 pm the council will onceagain start up and, of course,
public comment will happen forthis part of the meeting and
they'll also be voting onseveral items on their consent
agenda.
There is an ordinance about thetransient occupancy tax and
(10:05):
they're going to award acontract for the community
services building securityenhancements projects.
They're also going to acceptsome funding grants and funding
for the library, approve somesalary adjustments for the city
employees and they're going tobuy themselves another police
helicopter along with the cityof Glendale for $1 million yes,
(10:27):
that's $1 million or a policehelicopter.
I wonder whatever happens tothe helicopter that Clint
Eastwood donated.
Are they using it?
They're also going to improvetheir audio and visual equipment
in the community servicesbuilding for all those meetings
they're having there, which isnice.
Also Moving on, there will alsobe a public hearing on adoption
(10:52):
for a second extension to theurgency ordinance establishing
interim development standardsfor the Burbank Rancho
neighborhood and the Equestriandistrict, you really have to
wonder if it's such an urgentmatter, why do they have to keep
extending it?
I'm sure the Rancho people willall be there to have their say,
but all they're doing is justextending what they already have
(11:13):
in place.
They're not going to decideanything.
Next is the big one, and that'sto report to the council to add
an ordinance to establish aparking meter zone in downtown
Burbank, and they're going tohave a citywide fee schedule for
parking fees and parkingviolations.
So you're going to need to hirea gelada.
(11:34):
They've been talking about thisfor a while and right now
they're looking at only puttingmeters on the streets in
downtown Burbank, with a goal ofabout 20% open spaces at all
times, with the pricingadjustable depending on how busy
it is.
I think the advantage is justthe fact that employees will no
longer be parking in areas thatcustomers can now park in.
(11:55):
Unfortunately, this is thefuture Burbank, so we're going
to start getting parking metersall around town down the line,
and while I do not like it, I dounderstand it, because parking
structures do not get built forfree, or at least maintained for
free, and our parkingstructures are very old in the
city.
I just hope that the money madeon parking meters goes into
(12:19):
parking lots and streetimprovements in the areas they
are in, and not just the generalfund.
Not just the general fund.
I think we will take a deepplunge in that subject after the
meeting and let you know whathappened on our notebooks for
our notebook LM friends.
Another hot topic on the agendais going to be review of the
citywide outdoor dining inprivate parking lots and the
(12:42):
approval of the development of acodified outdoor outport
outdoor dining program with withexecutive standards for
citywide outdoor dining.
Always a mouthful, without adoubt.
Dining in the parking lots forthese restaurants and dining on
the sidewalks is a boon and I am100% in favor of continuing to
(13:04):
help out our restaurants thatstruggle as they are.
For the longest time, berwickwas so strict about having one
table on the sidewalk, likeother cities, and now we have
finally turned the corner andbecome restaurant friendly,
which increases the number ofdiners a restaurant can have and
hopefully increases theirprofits.
So we're going to have theRancho people probably there
(13:27):
complaining about the Ranchothings, and we're going to have
the Rancho people probably therecomplaining about the Rancho
things, and we're going to havedowntown parking people talking
about parking things and therest of the people there talking
about the restaurant things.
So why not include the bussystem in this?
So they're going to have areport from their subcommittee
on the Metro bus route fromNorth Hollywood to Pasadena
(13:49):
called the Bus Rapid TransitProject, better known as the BRT
.
So we all know that the BRTpeople will be there in support
or opposition of saving that oneminute and 30 seconds on Olive.
And just to end the meetingwith one more item, it's going
to be a task force for acitywide minimum wage and paid
(14:13):
parental leave.
I wonder where they will gowith this.
The voters just turned down astate minimum wage increase, so
we will see what Burbankofficials have to say about that
.
My only comment is I know fastfood workers want up to $20 an
hour and, yes, my McDonald's andmy Burger King burgers all cost
a little bit more money, asdoes my Wendy's, but it's good
(14:36):
to know that these people aremaking a good wage and don't
have to work 60 hours or twodifferent jobs just to pay their
rent.
So, yes, while I don't likepaying higher prices, I like the
fact that people actually makea decent wage to live in
Southern California, which istough enough as it is.
(15:00):
Let's move on to Wednesday.
Okay, here's a puzzle for youto figure out.
On Wednesday the TransportationCommission is having a special
meeting and when I go to thespecial meeting agenda to see
what they're going to talk about, it says the meeting was
canceled.
So the special meeting they'rehaving is not so special after
all, I guess.
And the Police Commission isscheduled to meet on Wednesday
(15:22):
at 6pm at City Hall, but theproblem is no agenda has been
posted.
I guess the Burbank PoliceDepartment has not decided what
PR matters they want the boardto bring up for them.
Take up for them.
I will give them the suggestionMaybe bring up the
officer-involved shooting thatrecently occurred and find out
why an officer pulled his weaponand fired it.
(15:43):
What did the suspect do for himto fire his gun?
To this day, no report of anyweapon that was found on the
suspect has been reported byBering Police and in fact a
suspect who was a transient wascited at the police department
for being in a stolen vehicleand then released.
Thank God we voted a new DA,but I'm sure that is much too
(16:07):
much a controversial topic forthe police commission to
actually deal with.
And of course you know they'llprobably be off in december
anyway.
I really don't blame the policecommission, I blame the system
that has put this smoke screenin place.
Okay, I'm into that.
You know how I feel about thatsometimes.
Friday okay, friday it's kind ofmuch anticipation and from what
(16:32):
I can see, we're going to havesome great weather.
So, thank goodness, it is theannual holiday in the park on
Magnolia.
Wait a second, did I just sayMagnolia?
Yes, that can only mean onething and that means that
(16:53):
Magnolia is our word of the week.
So send an email to contest atmyburbankcom and in the subject
line put Magnolia I know howmuch you must love that alert
(17:14):
and send it in to contest atmyburbankcom and you'll be
entered for a $25 gift card fornext week's.
And we'll find out next weekwho wins.
So, hopefully, good luck.
So the holiday in the park isonce again going on magnolia
between Buena Vista andHollywood Way.
That is probably the most wellintended event in Burbank every
(17:36):
year, with at least 35,000people expecting to show up.
There's going to be a ton ofactivities there, with live
music, and I hear Santa willeven be there to make a special
appearance.
Moving on to Saturday to bethere to make a special
appearance.
Moving on to Saturday If youactually recover from Friday
(17:57):
night, there's a lot going onSaturday the plan for a greener
Burbank being held from 9 to 11am at Johnny Carson Park, and
they make reference to plantinga tree or something of that
effect, or planting many trees.
Anyhow, that's one thing.
For Saturday morning, at 930,there's going to be a great yoga
(18:17):
hike at the Stout Canyon NatureCenter.
This sounds crazy, but I'llread it as they wrote it.
It says take a hike to the viewwhile fun-lo, loving goats
interact with each and everyparticipant.
Enjoy the yoga sessionoverseeing the city, taught by a
certified yoga instructor, along with some furry friends.
(18:38):
I have nothing else to say.
From 10 to 2 at the BurbankAnimal Shelter.
On Saturday, they are going tohave another kitten fair.
So there you go.
Finally, the Winter Waiwaireturns, I'm sorry, and the
whole street and a street fairtoo.
(19:00):
It's going to close down SanFernando and the street fair is
free to the public from 12 to 8.
The Wine Walk actually is awine sampling and it's from 4 to
8.
The Wine Walk actually is awine sampling, and it's from 4
to 8 pm and you must be 21.
(19:20):
Yeah well, I always thought, however, there should be an
exception for anybody serving inour military that they're
allowed to drink at 18.
If they're on leaves, why givethem a high-powered weapon and
teach them how to kill, but theycan't drink a glass of wine?
I guess you got to shake yourhead at that one, anyway.
And finally, on Sunday it'sgoing to be a wild creatures
(19:46):
walk at the Stout Canyon NatureCenter from 1130 to 1230.
And they're going to have youhike in the mountains and talk
about what kind of animals youcan find.
If you find a mountain lion, don't pet it.
Finally I know you like theword finally, don't we all?
(20:08):
It's time for Craig's comment, and it's about Holiday in the
Parks.
So I have two requests.
Number one is that you takesome time and stop in all the
stores and hopefully purchasesomething, or else look for
things for your Christmas listthat you want to go back and buy
later.
These businesses pay a lot ofmoney to put on Holiday in the
(20:32):
Park, so it's really importantthat we as a community support
these businesses and look at alot of great shops, a lot of
different things too, and smallrestaurants and everything.
So it's your time to get.
Don't just walk up and down andlook for free stuff in all the
(20:52):
booths and places.
Go into the stores also.
But that brings us to thebooths.
So, number two stop by the myBurbank booth that's going to be
located right around, rightaround the corner on Magnolia
and California, and stop by andsay hi, we're going to be doing
a podcast and we're going tohave a lot of swag for sale.
(21:16):
Don't you think you'd look goodin a new my Burbank hat or
t-shirt?
I think so.
We're also going to have freepens to everybody that has a
stylus on the back side to usewith your phone or your tablet,
of course, while supplies last.
This is one of the best eventsof the year in Burbank and I'd
(21:36):
love to see more people from theHill area come down and enjoy
it also.
Anyhow, that's it once again formy comment.
Not a long comment, but onceagain, support Magnolia Park,
support all Burbank businessesVery important.
So please, once again, donotolia Park, support all
Burbank businesses Veryimportant.
So please, once again, do notforget to subscribe and like
(21:58):
this video and please, as always, consider a channel membership
to the MyBurbank YouTube channelso we can keep going and
bringing you this great content.
I hope it's great content.
I hope you enjoy the content.
I hope it's great content.
I hope you enjoy the content.
I hope you enjoy the weeklyupdates.
Anyhow, that's it for anotherepisode.
(22:21):
We will hopefully see you onFriday night at Holiday Park and
that's about it for anotherweek.
So once again, craig Sherwood, saying thank you for watching or
listening in the park, andthat's about it for another week
.
So once again, craig Sherwood, saying thank you for watching or
listening in your cars and wewill talk to you later.
You.
