Speaker 1 (00:01):
My Burbank Talks presents another edition of the
Week that Was and the Week thatWill Be a weekly podcast
featuring highlights andcommentary on local events and
issues taking place right herein Burbank.
Now let's see what's on today'sagenda as we join our program.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Thank you, thank you, thank you, please sit down, sit
down.
Hello, burbank, craig Shorthere with you once again for
another the Week that Was andthe Week that Will Be, and
hopefully a short broadcasttonight with the holiday week.
But remember, as always, wehave a humble request that you
like this video and pleasesubscribe to the channel so

(00:39):
YouTube continues to recommendthis video to others like
yourself, and also think about achannel membership to support
us here at my Burbank.
Last week's Word of the Weekwinner was Mike Lopez.
A little ta-da for you.
There you go, of course.
The word was Magnolia, incelebration of Magnolia Park,

(01:00):
mike won a $25 gift card to alocal Burbank restaurant and all
he had to do was send it inemail with a single word in the
subject line and his address.
How easy can that be?
As always, there will beanother Word of the Week later
in the show, so please listenand send it in to us for your
chance to win that $25 gift card.

(01:23):
So last Monday we taped our Askthe Mayor show, which came out
on Tuesday, and Mayor NickSchultz gave us a lot of good
information, as always.
If you have time to take alisten to it, because, while he
is not the mayor anymore, hestill has some great information
and insight into the latestcouncil meeting.
Information and insight intothe latest council meeting.

(01:48):
So on tuesday uh, the citycouncil meeting on tuesday night
.
First they extended theirextension of an urgency
ordinance for the rancherneighborhood.
But there's all kinds ofquestions that even though they
extended for a year and all theprotections are going to end
within possibly four to sixmonths.
I think I heard for the oneyear extension that doesn't mean
much.
There are all kinds of statelaws about to be invoked and who

(02:10):
knows what's going to happenwith that whole situation.
I have a feeling that RanchoPupar are going to have some
headaches ahead.
The council also went ahead withthe parking meter program for
downtown Burbank, so expect tosee those meters coming in the
next few months there.
This is a pilot project, asalways, and anything else you

(02:37):
might see will work for otherareas of the city also.
So time will tell.
The council also approved thetemporary suspension of city
code parking requirements foroutdoor seating areas for
restaurants.
They'll come back with moresubstantial rules at a later
time, but it appears thatoutdoor dining will continue to
break for many years to come, which is also great news for the

(03:00):
restaurant owners as well asthe customers and, in some cases
, their four-legged friends.
The council also looked at apotential citywide minimum wage
and paid parental leaveordinance, but it really did not
seem like it had much traction.
They will look into it further, but I can't really see this
going anywhere, especially withthe state proposition being

(03:21):
voted down.
In all honesty, fast foodworkers are now at $20 per hour,
which I think is great, andwhile restaurant workers make a
minimum wage, they also receivetips which give somewhere
between $30 and $100 an hour, depending on how Gucci the
restaurant is.
On Thursday, some big news MayorNick Schultz announced he was

(03:46):
stepping down from the citycouncil as of today.
He was nice enough to sit downwith us for a complete podcast
to tell us all about his nextadventure in the California
Assembly.
It is interesting to note that,by state law, all assembly
members must be sworn in onDecember 2nd, which is why he
had to leave early.
This only gives him a couple ofweeks to put his entire staff

(04:08):
together and get used to his newdigs up in Sacramento.
Vice Mayor Nicky Perez willassume the duties of mayor for
the next couple of weeks untilthe reorganization meeting and
the council will only have fourmembers.
Until then, I do not anticipateany problems or situations
until the reorganization meeting, when Chris Rezati will be
sworn in as the fifth member ofthe council.

(04:30):
The police collection met onWednesday and we did not have
their agenda last week for themeeting, but that's okay.
Nothing happened and our secretpolice had nothing to report.
Hard to believe.
On Friday it was holiday in thepark.
What an amazing night.
Estimates were between 35,000and 40,000 people jammed in

(04:55):
Magnolia between Buena Vista andHugger Way to see the over 60
booths that were set up at theamazing car show.
Of course, viper Bank was thereand we had a booth and we
actually did a podcast ofdifferent people who stopped by.
Make sure you give that alisten, because it's a very
strange podcast, if I say somyself, with some dignitaries as

(05:16):
well as some people as youngkids who could only giggle.
We took everybody, so I hopeyou get a giggle out of that.
We had a lot of our new Burbankmerch for sale and we
appreciate everybody who pickedsomething up.
We were putting together anonline store that you can go to
anytime.
Our hot seller was the new myBurbank Calendar for 2025 and we

(05:39):
will continue to have those fora limited time.
Finally, not only do we want tothank you, I want to thank you.
I want to thank my threecaptains from the varsity
baseball team at Burbank Highfor giving me an amazing assist
on that night, but also thepeople who came up to me and
thanked my Burbank for thecoverage we gave of the city.
Sometimes you sit behind acomputer or sit behind a

(06:00):
microphone and you don't realizethat people are actually
getting some good informationfrom us.
We do try, just like Iappreciate everybody who listens
to this show on a weekly basis.
Many people told me they listento this show in their cars
going to and from work, and someput it on their YouTube channel
in the background and listen toit.

(06:20):
Either way, it is very muchappreciated.
So, once again, it is very muchappreciated.
So, once again, it was a greatevent.
I'm sure the merchants did well.
I'm sure everybody there had agreat time.
I heard of no problemswhatsoever.
It was packed.
It was absolutely packed there.
Everywhere I looked I could seewall-to-wall people.

(06:43):
So great job for making, showing up and coming out there.
Great job to all the merchants.
Great job to the Magnolia Parkcommittee who organized the
entire thing, and, like ViceMayor Nikki Prinsen On our
podcast, we need to have moreevents like this in Burbank.
So who knows what the futureholds?
Okay, after a quick word Fromour sponsor.

(07:06):
So who knows what the futureholds?
Okay, after a quick word fromour sponsor, which is a
commercial.
We will return Back in a second.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
Now back to our show.
Yes, thank you, thank you, thank you everybody.
Once again, craig Schroederwith you, and we're for the week
that will be so, starting onMonday.
Monday's a quiet day formeetings, as it always is last
Monday of the month.
Too bad, they can't put acouple of those meetings, that
bunch, upon other Mondays, onthis Monday.

(08:11):
But that's only my opinion andmy wish, which sure doesn't mean
a whole lot.
On Tuesday the City Council willmeet.
As we said before.
It will only have a four-membercouncil with now Intramayor
Nikki Perez running the meeting, and they'll be approving the
parking meters now as part ofthe consent agenda.

(08:31):
Also, the consent agenda isapproval of the Burbank Water
and Power Street Lighting MasterPlan.
Here's a fun fact for you thereare 9,451 lights in the city of
Burbank.
That Water and Power isresponsible for.
A lot of lights is astreamlined ministerial design

(08:54):
review of the 40-unitmultifamily residential project
in 910 South Mariposa Street,which is a SB35 project.
You know that the Rancho peoplewill be there in force and even
though we went and did a podcastusing a staff report, I had
calls from people saying thatthe information was wrong.

(09:17):
Once again, the RanchoNeighborhood is going to be
disappointed, but there's littlethe City Council can do about
it without denying the projectand losing another half million
dollars in a lawsuit, like theydid with Pickwick.
So we'll see how wrong theirstaff report really is and we'll
see if they make their pointsand if the city council listens

(09:38):
to them.
I don't know.
One of the last things on thatagenda is to fill two vacancies
on the Burbank Culture ArtsCommission.
I really think a policy changeneeds to be made where these
items are put at the beginningof the meeting, because if
people want to address thecouncil, they're going to have
to sit there for hours waitingfor all the other agenda items

(09:58):
to go by before they canintroduce themselves to the
council, if that's what theywish.
If that was part of the earlyagenda, these people could make
their comments at council andlet them be voted on and let
them get on with their lives, instead of having to sit there
and wait for three or four hours.
Just my observation.
That's about it for meetingsthis week, because of course the

(10:21):
rest of the week is part of theholiday week Wednesday.
Wednesday, of course, isget-out-of-town day and I'm sure
Burbank Airport is going to bethe parking lot.
So do yourself a favor and ifyou're going to fly, just leave
a couple hours early and relax.
Last minute Louie Going to donothing but stress you out,

(10:44):
trust me.
Thursday, of course Thursday isThanksgiving.
There we go.
And of course, when you hearthat Beautiful little alert,
that can only mean one thing andthat is the word of the week,
which is Thanksgiving, there yougo.

(11:07):
So If you made it this farthrough the show, send an email
to contest At myburncom.
Put the word Thanksgiving inthe subject line and send me
your address and we'll put youto running for this week's $25
gift card.
So good luck.

(11:27):
Besides spending the time withyour family, it's also a time of
reflection.
I would personally like to givemy sincerest thank you to all
those who listen to this show, watch or listen to other
podcasts, subscribe to mynewsletter or just read the my
website on a regular basis, andmy utmost thanks goes to our

(11:51):
sponsors, our amazingadvertisers, who support free
speech in Burbank with ourwebsite.
Without these people andbusinesses, we could not have
our writers and photographersout there covering events and
bringing you all the local news.
I would sincerely appreciate itif, when you visit one of our
advertisers or businesses, thatyou thank them for supporting my

(12:13):
Burbank Friday.
Of course Friday is BlackFriday.
I'm sure all the merchants atMagnolia really hope that you
come back and visit them.
After all the amazing deals yousaw at Holiday in the Park,
they could really use yourbusiness.
Don't make Holiday in the Parkjust a one-time thing.

(12:33):
Take a look at those businesses, take a look at what they have.
I'm sure they'll have BlackFriday deals.
Get in there, spend your money.
That only leaves one thing, andone thing only, and that's
Craig's comment.
My only comment is a very briefone and it's really not a
Burbank comment, but it doesaffect Burbank people, and

(12:56):
that's the cost of professionalsports.
Last night, the Rams andPhiladelphia.
They played and the Dodgers hadtheir season, the Lakers are in
their season, and it is amazingwhen every week at the council
meetings, every week, you're allaround town here.

(13:16):
Well, I can't afford my rent, Ican't afford to live in the
city town, I hear well, I can'tafford my rent, I can't afford
to live in the city, I can'tafford this, I can't afford that
, and I get that.
Those are all real concerns.
Nobody's you know, nobody'scomplaining just to complain.
But then I look at what it costsa family of four to go to a

(13:36):
professional game, a Laker game,a Laker game, a Dodger game, a
Ram game.
You're looking for not greattickets or just decent tickets,
being around $200 a piece.
You have to also look at theRam games.
They're charging over $100 topark in their lot, $100 just to

(13:57):
park your car for four hours.
Tell me that's not pricegouging.
So you look at a family of fourwho like to go to a
professional game and that'sgoing to cost way over $1,000
for one game.
Every $1,000 to $1,500.
You take the food, you takeeverything else going on.
That's a lot of money for onegame.

(14:20):
But you look at these games theRams 60,000, 70,000 people.
The Dodgers 50,000 every night.
The Lakers 18,000 people.
So somewhere these people havethe money to do this stuff.
It sounds on one side all I hearis nobody has money and on the

(14:41):
other side, where do people getthe money to spend this kind of
money?
Are they going to debt?
If you've got a kid or a couplekids and they really want to go
see a Dodger game, they want togo really see a Ram game, you
really can't deny them yearafter year and you finally take
them to a game.
But do you have to go into debtto take them to a game?
Nowadays, come on Dodgers Rams$100 to park your car.

(15:06):
Are you kidding me?
That's just greedy.
I know a Dodger stadium.
The Dodgers lease the entireland that they use for $1 a year
.
That's what they leased infront of the city of Los Angeles
.
They had a 99 year lease for $1a year, so that parking lot is

(15:29):
100% profit for them.
So, yeah, you feel ripped offon things.
Now, hopefully the city of losangeles gets smart and when the
lease is up after 99 years whichis coming up another 20 years,
I think it's 99 years but whenthe lease comes up, well, they
can negotiate a new lease.
And you know what?
I hope they get a little morethan a dollar a year because
they you know one thing to tryto lure a professional team los

(15:51):
angeles.
Now they're here and they'renot going anywhere.
So but my point is, the cost ofprofessional sports is getting
out of hand.
I think you should spend two or$3,000 in an amazing television
entertainment system.
Put that in your house andthere you go.

(16:12):
You don't need to go to games.
You really don't need to go atthat kind of money and then long
run you'll save yourself a lotof money.
You don't need to go to games, you really don't need to go at
that kind of money and thenlonger you'll save yourself a
lot of money.
I don't know.
I don't know what the answer is.
You know, I appreciate the LAteams really have to spend a lot
of money to get the bestplayers, because LA kind of
demands that I get that.
But I don't think other teamssuccessful teams throughout the

(16:37):
NFL, the NBA and MLB are allcharging that kind of money for
tickets, for parking, for food, for everything else.
I think they look at theirsocioeconomic status in the
community and they price itaccordingly.
I just think in LA you knowwhat Everybody here's got money.
We'll just gouge people Anyhow.

(17:00):
I could rant all day about this, you know, but I just hate
seeing people taken advantage of.
So that's my comment Take it orleave it for what it is.
I know it's not a Burbankcomment, but people from Burbank
do go to the professional games.
People in Burbank do havefinancial problems and I think
it's kind of relevant.
