Israel Vallarta fue detenido junto con Florence Cassez el 8 de diciembre de 2005. Al día siguiente se organizó un montaje televisivo para utilizar su detención como un acto de propaganda. Esta detención ilegal terminó en la liberación de Vallarta veinte años después de haber permanecido en prisión sin haber sido juzgado.
