In this episode "The Verdict" by Edith Wharton is a short story first published in 1908.
The narrative centers around an artist who abandons his painting career at the height of his success. The story is told from the perspective of Mr. Rickham, an acquaintance of Gisburn, who becomes intrigued by the reasons behind Gisburn's sudden withdrawal from the art world. It is considered a typical example of her writing particularly for its style, themes and social critique.
