Karl (00:13):
Hi everybody, my name is Karl Darden, and I'd like to
welcome and thank all of you forjoining us today on Navy Sports
Central.
I'm your host, and this is theofficial podcast of the Navy
Sports Nation, where we take adeeper dive into Navy Sports.
We are well into the fallsports season, and that means
we've got quite a bit to covertoday.
Unless you've just crawled outfrom under a rock, you know that
the uh football team is off toa 6-0 start, but uh things are

(00:34):
gonna get much tougher fromhere.
Of their six remainingopponents, uh, one of them,
South Florida, is stillundefeated in conference play
and two are ranked.
So we're gonna take a look athow the team has performed
through the first half of theseason and then assign some
midterm grades to the offense, defense, and special teams.
And we'll also catch you up onsome of the other false supports
going on, so don't go anywhere.
We are just getting started.

(00:55):
Alright, it's great to have youguys with us.
Thanks so much for dropping in.
I really appreciate you takingthe time.
It is great to be back after alonger than anticipated break,
and um I'll speak to that injust a minute, but I can tell
you right now that gettingthrown off schedule, especially
during football season, has beena real drag.

(01:17):
Now, those of you who are partof the Navy Sports Nation
Facebook group may recall that Ibegan dealing with some pretty
debilitating low back pain abouttwo months ago.
There have been times in thepast where I've had to deal with
the occasional sore back or youknow also some some back spasms
here and there, but uh this wascompletely different.
Uh when I looked in the mirror,I noticed that my hips were

(01:37):
completely out of whack.
The uh right one was clearlytilted higher, and when I
walked, I had this noticeableleft lean to keep the pain to a
minimum.
Um I guess that over time Ideveloped this crazy muscle
imbalance that had pulled mylower spine out of alignment.
And finally, my back decided ithad had just about enough.
Forget about sitting down.
That was out of the question.
The only way I felt 100%comfortable and pain free was

(01:59):
when I was flat on my back.
Needless to say, I wasn'thaving a whole lot of fun.
And uh this is how bad it got.
Uh yeah, I'd be lying down onthe floor watching TV or
something, and then of courseI'd get hungry.
So now I've got to ask myself aquestion.
Is getting something to eatgonna be worth the pain I was
gonna experience when I pulledmyself off the floor and limped
over to the kitchen to fixmyself something to eat?
I can tell you that at leasthalf the time I'd just say to

(02:21):
myself, nah, I'm good for a fewmore hours, and considering how
much I like to eat, that'sthat's really saying something.
But I'm doing much better now.
I found this really goodtraining program that does a
terrific job strengthening theuh the deep core muscles that
attach to the spine.
I do those exercises everymorning, and they've made a huge
difference.
Now I'm no longer walkingaround looking like a question
mark.

(02:41):
Anyway, it feels great to bejust about back in fighting
shape, so let's get you caughtup with some of the sports going
on in the yard.
We will get to our mid-seasongrades for the uh football team
in our deep dive segment, but uhwe can start things off by
talking a little bit about waterpolo, women's soccer, and men's
cross country.
So here we go.
Okay, uh taking a look at waterpolo, the mids are currently
15-7, and they also have a 7-1conference record.

(03:05):
Um, about a month and a halfago, they defeated Air Force uh
to hold on to the Freedom Vase.
That was a pretty excitingmatch.
It was 15-14.
Uh Mids got off to a prettygood lead and had to hold off
the Falcons down the stretch towin by one goal.
And right now, the Mids are inthe middle of a three-game
winning streak.
And uh as far as individualplayers go, Kiefer Black, uh,
who is a junior, is the Mids'leading scorer and also their

(03:28):
leading points producer.
He's got uh 53 goals on theseason to go along with 42
assists for a total of 95points.
The conference championshipstarts in about a month, and the
uh mids will be looking to getback to the finals.
Uh last year they were takenout by Fordham, so we'll see if
the Mids can't turn the tableson them this season.
Moving on to uh women's soccer,uh, they are currently 9-5-3

(03:50):
with a 2-2-3 conference record.
And uh right now they'resitting in fifth place in the uh
Patriot League.
Um their uh leading scorer isuh Marlee Heaven.
She is a senior from Rockville,Maryland, and she currently has
here, nine goals, threeassists, and that's for a total
of 21 points.
Uh you recall when theycalculate points in soccer, you

(04:11):
get two points per goal and thenone point for the assists.
Um conference tournament startson November the second.
Now, the one thing I willmention here is that uh in the
annual star match against Army,uh the Mids ended up with a 2-2
tie.
And you know that one had thesting a little bit because they
jumped out to a two-zip lead.

(04:32):
And um actually, let's see, this yeah, they were up one-zero
at halftime, picked up thesecond goal fairly early in the
second half, and then Army gotone back, and it was two to ones
going back and forth, back andforth, and then right at the
end, I might it was like withless than 30 seconds left in a
game, Army got the uh game tyinggoal.
So that one went down as a tie.

(04:53):
But the good news is theydidn't take the loss, which was
important when it comes to theStar Series because what that
means is instead of 14 wins uhto secure the um the competition
this year, the Mids only need13.
And um, so although it wasn't awin, it's certainly better than
taking the loss.
Um okay, so that does it forsoccer.

(05:14):
Uh women are actually playingpretty well this year.
So they, I mean, they sit infifth, but there's a bunch of
teams that are kind of tied forlike second, third, and fourth
there.
So there's a pretty good chanceif they get on a hot streak,
they could uh they could gopretty deep into the tournament
and maybe even come away withit.
Who knows?
But uh Army's gonna be tough tobeat.
They're pretty good this year.
Okay, we're gonna finish upwith men's cross country.

(05:35):
And the good news here is thatthey uh just picked up their
seventh consecutive star overArmy in their annual meet, which
took place uh this pastweekend.
It wasn't easy though.
Uh the score was uh 26 to 29,and just to refresh your memory,
remember the low score wins incross country because they just
add up the points based on howthe uh runners finish.
Justin Mumford, who is asenior, took the individual

(05:56):
title.
In fact, he he took charge ofthe race pretty much halfway
through and won by a solid 15, Ithink it's like 15 to 20
seconds.
Um teammate Patrick Gandini wassecond, so that was a nice
strong start for the mids.
Uh, and then the remainingpoints came from James Partlow,
who uh finished sixth, LoganFlement, who finished eighth.
Uh Logan, I hope I'mpronouncing your last name

(06:17):
correctly there.
And then uh we hadJackson Nguyen who finished uh
ninth.
So those last two spots werecritical because if an Army
runner had finished eighth andthen bumped Partlow and N
guyen down to ninth and tenth, the Black Knights would have won
the meet.
So uh congratulations to themen's cross country team on
another terrific win over Army.
Uh they will be looking todefend their Patriot League
title on October 31st at LehighUniversity.

(06:39):
Okay, that's gonna do it forthe sports update.
Um, our deep dive segment iscoming up next where I will be
handing out some midseasongrades to the football team, so
you will definitely want tostick around for that.
So I thought it would beinteresting to hand out some

(07:12):
grades seeing how the brigadejust finished up midterm exams.
First of all, I wanted to givea big shout out to the Navy
coaching staff.
Uh, one of the things I'velearned since starting this
podcast is that coaching at allthe service academies adds a
layer of complexity.
Um, not every coach is a goodfit, and right now I think the
football team is fortunate tohave a staff that understands
what it takes to mesh the goalsof the team with the overall

(07:34):
physical mission of the academy.
So I just wanted to point thatout as the mids head into the
second half of the season, anduh judging from the teams left
on the schedule, it's gonna bequite a grind.
Now let's get to the gradesstarting with the uh offense.
First up is the uh offensiveline.
Um I will say that this grouphas been a really nice surprise
overall.
Uh the team lost some goodexperience last year when Brent
Self and Connor McMahongraduated, but the reps that the

(07:56):
underclassmen got during keygames is really paying off this
year.
Uh Ben Purvis at left guard,Cam Nichols at center, and Hoke
Smith at right guard make up thecore of the interior line, and
they've been doing a terrificjob.
Purvis is a senior whileNichols and Smith are juniors.
And uh by the way, I didn'twant to forget Sean Crowley at
left tackle and Jalen Acevedo atright tackle.
Uh they are both sophomores.

(08:16):
The only thing I would like tosee tightened up during the rest
of the season is the pre-snappenalties.
Um they weren't that much of anissue over the first four
games.
It's only been the last couplethat they've been kind of piling
up, but those penalties have away of really killing drives,
and the Mids aren't going to beable to afford that against
teams like South Florida andMemphis, not to mention Notre
Dame.
Uh on balance though, I'd saythe offensive line has
definitely stepped up despitelosing two key players from last

(08:38):
year, and they are the bigreason Blake Horvath has been so
productive.
Through six games, he's got 640rushing yards, and that
averages out to be about 106 pergame.
He's also run for eighttouchdowns.
And as far as passing goes,he's thrown for 980 yards and
seven touchdowns whilecompleting 64% of his passes.
More important than all ofthat, though, is the fact that
Horvath consistently makes gooddecisions.

(09:00):
And uh yeah, there've been acouple of passes that have
gotten away from him, butoverall, his accuracy has really
improved compared to lastseason.
Uh he does a great job ofputting the offense in the right
play, and what I like the mostabout Horvath is that he is
really patient when it comes tosetting up his blocks.
On that touchdown againstTemple, they got them within a
point.
He waited for Ben Purvis topull around to the right and
then exploded through the holeas soon as Purvis sealed off the

(09:22):
linebacker.
Alex Tecza took care of hisguy, and so did Cody Howard
downfield.
And in fact, nobody laid afinger on Horvath on his way to
the end zone.
So he is doing a fantastic jobrunning Coach Cronic's offense.
Okay, jumping over to uh EliHeidenreich, um, looking at his
rushing numbers, he's got 266yards, averaging about 7.6 yards
per carry and three touchdowns.

(09:42):
He's also caught 23 passes for485 yards and four scores.
In fact, the uh the lasttouchdown he caught, which uh
came against Air Force, made himthe career leader in touchdown
receptions at Navy with 14.
Heidenreich is extremelyproductive.
Uh anytime he gets his hands onthe ball, he is a legitimate
threat.
Um right now he's averagingabout 21 yards per catch.

(10:02):
So I'm looking for him toreally continue uh having the
same kind of impact for the restof the season.
Okay, now let's get over to uhAlex Tecza.
So far this year, he's got 409rushing yards.
That works out to be about 6.4yards per carry.
Um he's gotten into the endzone five times, and on top of
that, he's added uh six catchesfor 71 yards.

(10:22):
And of course, the biggest onethere was the uh two-point
conversion he caught fromHorvath against Temple that uh
put Navy ahead, and of course, the uh defense was able to close
things out.
Tecza has been a little bitbanged up this year, but I'm
hoping the bye week gave him thechance to get all healed up.
Um, the offense is really goingto need him over the last
couple of months.
But again, uh here's a guy whoconsistently comes up with big

(10:43):
plays when the team needs him.
And not only that, but he's oneof the best blockers out there
amongst the uh the uh fullbacksin the receiving core.
The last person I wanted tomention was Brandon Chatman at
the snipe position.
He's currently at 152 rushingyards, averaging about 6.1 yards
per carry, but it is hisblocking that I find the most
impressive.
Um Chatman is listed at 5'9,174 pounds, and and that might

(11:06):
be a little bit generous, butum, here's a guy who puts his
body on the line.
I've seen him do this so manytimes over the last two seasons,
and and most of the time he'sgiving away at least 40 pounds.
That doesn't seem to phase himthough, and and as a result,
he's wound up springing Horvath,Tecza, and Heidenreich on some
huge gains.
So um, I would like to see himactually get his hands on the
ball a little bit more often.
He made a really nice catchagainst Air Force, and uh,

(11:29):
whenever he gets his hands onthe ball, it's pretty exciting
to watch him run.
All right, let's just finish upwith some general stats for the
team.
Uh, offense, in terms ofrushing, they're ranked first in
the country at 305 yards pergame.
And the red zone offense isranked 11th, so that's uh that's
pretty efficient there.
And as I mentioned before, oneof the things I'd like to see
the offense kind of tighten up alittle bit is the untimely

(11:51):
pre-snap penalties, which putthem behind the sticks and
really create a lot of problemsfor them.
So, overall grade for theoffense, I'm gonna go with A-I
think that uh they've done aterrific job, but there's
definitely some room for growththere.
And I'm hopeful that these lastcouple of weeks uh they've had
a chance to really get dialed inand focus on this next game
against Florida Atlantic, putting everything together in

(12:12):
that game and seeing where theycan go from there.
Now let's talk a little bitabout the defense.
Um, starting with LandonRobinson, he is having another
strong year.
Uh currently he is third on theteam in tackles with 33, and uh
he leads the defense in sackswith five and also tackles for a
loss with six.
And um, I gotta say that uh I'mcontinuing to be impressed with
Robinson's athleticism.

(12:33):
I mean, I if you guys rememberthat game against Air Force uh
in that last drive that theFalcons had, Jackson Campbell
had deflected that pitch up intothe air back in uh Robinson's
direction, and he actually dovefor it and caught it out of
midair.
So I mean that was prettyimpressive because he was in the
process of fighting off a blockat the same time.
So uh again, great job by himand helping secure that win for

(12:54):
Navy over Air Force and uh justa phenomenal athlete in terms of
uh what he's doing atnose guard there for Mids this
year.
Uh next up we have LukePierrus.
He is uh second on the team intackles with 45 and third in
tackles for a loss.
And he's also got a fumblerecovery this year.
Um, in fact, he always seems tobe around the football.
And and one thing that reallyillustrates this is the number

(13:15):
of assisted tackles he's got.
Uh, out of his 45 uh tacklestotal, I think 30 of them are
assisted.
So basically he's he's alwaysaround the football and always
looking to make a big play.
And then uh the third guy Iwanted to point out today was uh
Marc Anthony Parker, who is asophomore linebacker.
He actually leads the team intackles with 52, and he also has
one and a half sacks.

(13:35):
Now, I believe that Parker hasa chance to add his name to what
is becoming a very long list ofgreat Navy linebackers.
This guy's IQ when it comes todefense is really off the
charts.
Uh I was listening to apost-game interview, I think it
was after the I want to say therice game, maybe.
The uh question he was askedhad to do with the defensive
schemes that uh Coach Volckerwas running in that game.

(13:56):
And he made a reallyinteresting comment.
He said that one of the thingsthat I really work hard at doing
is just focusing on my job andnot getting bored with it.
Because the second you stopgetting bored with your job, you
start looking to do otherpeople's jobs.
And uh and that's whenexplosive plays can occur and
you end up giving up a bigscore.
So I thought that was somepretty good insight from a guy

(14:18):
who's who's only a sophomore, sohe's got a really big future
here at uh Navy, and uh I'mactually wondering how high his
ceiling is.
So those are three players thatI think are really excelling
right now on the field for theNavy defense, and uh they do
have some things to tighten up,though.
Um, as you guys know, they lostmost of their secondary to
graduation.
So uh that's been a little bitof an adjustment getting those

(14:38):
guys up to speed, but it'scoming along.
Um, I think communication onthe field, especially when the
offense shifts into um differentalignments prior to the snap,
that's caused some problems ondefense, especially coverage
breakdowns, and it has resultedin some explosive plays.
Uh Coach Volker also mentionedthe need to improve um, you
know, some basic fundamentals asthey relate to the different
schemes that the defenseemploys.

(14:58):
So we'll see how things go inthe coming weeks.
I hope that the uh bye week didthem a lot of good and that
that things really improve onthe communication side in the
last half of the season.
So as I'm looking to assign anoverall grade, um, I was gonna
say C plus, but I did want togive them credit for the key
turnover that helped secure theWin over Air Force and really
standing their ground againstTemple with the game on the

(15:19):
line.
So I think that gets them to aB minus.
What I think they need to do tobring that grade up to an A is
to get to the point where theyare making the offense react to
what they are doing.
In other words, just becomingreal disruptors again.
That hasn't been the case asmuch this year.
Um certainly I think they'rethey're doing well against the
run.
I believe they're ranked 45thagainst the run.
So that's you know, top thirdin division one, so that's

(15:41):
pretty respectable.
And um I did want to mentionthat the mids are ranked 20th in
red zone defense, so that'sreally good.
But uh yeah, it's the passcoverage breakdowns that have
been giving the uh the defensesome problems.
So hopefully they can get thatcleaned up uh over the last half
of the season.
Okay, now on to special teams.
And I know when people thinkthis uh category, they think
strictly field goal kicking, butwe're gonna talk about punting

(16:02):
and also uh kick returning aswell.
Um Nathan Kirkwood's beenNavy's kicker for the last
couple of years, and uh thisyear he's not had a lot of
opportunities, but he has madethe most of them.
Uh currently he is five of sixwith a long of 48 yards, and
that one came against Temple.
You guys remember that one?
He was looking like uh a PGAtour player there, drawing that
ball in from the right to theleft, squeezing it inside the

(16:23):
upright.
But uh his only miss has beenbeyond 50 yards.
And with Kirkwood, leg strengthhas never been an issue.
It's always been the accuracy.
And the uh the one thing I cantell from this year compared to
last is that uh his accuracy hasreally improved.
Last year, Kirkwood onlyconnected on uh five of nine
attempts, and he had a I thinkhe had at least one miss inside
of 40 yards.
So that that was a little bitiffy.

(16:43):
Um Coach Newberry has said thathe feels a lot better about the
kicking game this year based onuh Kirkwood's improvement.
So that's that's really greatto see.
So now let's go ahead and talkabout punting with uh Jacob
Carlson.
He is a sophomore from Plano,Texas, and he's currently
averaging 44.6 yards per punt.
Um he's been on the field 15times this year.
Six of his kicks have beenlonger than 50 yards, and seven

(17:05):
have been inside the 20.
So those numbers are prettyconsistent with the ones that uh
Riley Reithman was uh puttingup last year.
Okay, now let's look at the uhkick returners, and the uh guy I
want to focus on there is uhIsaiah Bryant.
Uh he is averaging a solid 21yards per return, and his
longest has been uh 43 yardsagainst Air Force.
I think Bryant's got a realshot at taking a kickoff back

(17:27):
for a touchdown before the yearis out based on what he's done
so far.
I mean, last year he almostbroke one against the Army, and
he he's come close a couple oftimes this year besides that uh
return he had against theFalcons.
So uh you never know.
We'll we'll see what happens.
Uh as far as an overall gradefor the special teams, I'm gonna
go ahead and assign a B.
And I think that's largely dueto the uh nice improvement that

(17:48):
Kirkhood has made with hisaccuracy and also the uh
consistency that uh Carlson andBryant have shown in the uh
punting and uh kickoff returngames, respectively.
So uh great job to the specialteams.
Just to kind of sum things uphere, if I'm gonna uh give the
team an overall grade, uh takinginto account offense, defense,
and special teams, I think B isappropriate.
Um the offense has definitelymet expectations in my view.

(18:11):
And granted, there's somethings that can kind of tighten
up there a little bit, but uhoverall I think you'd have to be
pretty pleased with that.
And then special teams, they'vedone slightly better than I
thought.
The uh defense hasn't been upto its usual standard when it
comes to consistently causingdisruption, but uh they have a
lot of talent and they just needto build that chemistry up that
they had uh last year.
So uh the way to do it isbasically what's happening right

(18:34):
now.
I mean, there's no experiencelike game experience.
Uh right now the Mids are infirst place in the uh in the
American conference.
Uh South Florida and Tulanealso have no conference losses.
So it's basically one game at atime from here on in.
Um I'm I'm curious to get yourtake on how the season has gone
so far.
What grade would you give theMids?
Uh let me know.

I'm looking forward to havingyou join us.
We'll be right back.
This is the second day of theannual star match against your

(20:09):
arch rival army.
You are the fifth of sevensingles matches that are being
played today.
Following the four-ballcompetition that took place
yesterday, your team was tiedwith the Black Knights at two
points apiece.
The team that wins at leastfour of the seven points
available in singles would earnthat much coveted star.
So far, things have gotten offto a good start.
Your teammates have taken threeof the first four matches to go

(20:29):
up five to three, with threemore on the course.
But there's still a long way togo.
Coming off the 14th green, youfind yourself down two holes
with four left to play.
You also know that your othertwo teammates still on the
course are trailing in theirmatches, so Army seems to have
the advantage.
This match is extremelyimportant to you.
Navy has not defeated Army ingolf since 2021.
You entered Annapolis in thesummer of 2023.

(20:52):
This means you have not yetexperienced the feeling of
beating Army, which is arguablythe most important thing to
every Navy athlete.
You did have that opportunitytwo years ago.
As a freshman, you held thelead in your singles match, but
it slipped away down the stretchand your opponent went on to
win in extra holes.
That resulted in the BlackKnights taking home the star for
the second year in a row.
As you make your way to the15th T, you try to stay focused.

(21:14):
Coming back from a two-holedeficit this late in a match
won't be easy, but you've beenplaying golf long enough to know
that things can change in ahurry.
Sure enough, you fight your wayback, winning two out of the
next three holes.
And by the time you and yourarmy counterpart are ready to
hit your drives at the 455-yard18th, the match is all square.
The gallery begins to sensethat it is this contest that

(21:34):
will decide which team wins thestar, because the two teammates
still on the course with youcontinue to trail their
opponents.
But that's not what's on yourmind.
All you want to do is put theball in play and give yourself a
chance to close out this match.
Your t-shot isn't exactly whatyou wanted on this challenging
final hole, but it is playable.
Then, things changedramatically when your opponent
hits his drive out of balance.

(21:55):
After taking a penalty stroke,he teases ball up again and hits
his third shot into thefairway.
You punch your second shot outof the left rough to the
fairway, but you're still 120yards from the pin.
Meanwhile, your fellowcontestant winds up hitting his
fourth shot wide of the green.
You follow with your thirdshot, which lands just short of
the putting surface.
But you still have some work todo.

(22:16):
After your rival gets his fifthshot onto the green, he misses
his putt for double bogey.
And when your chip shot stopsinside of three feet, he
concedes the hole, giving youthe win.
The feeling of being able tocome through after being down
late in the match is absolutelyincredible.

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there.
