Amanda Benbow Lunn (00:11):
Hello friends, thanks for joining me
and the NC Deep Dive.
I am your host, Amanda BenbowLunn, and we are delving into
the 2024 primary election.
Each episode will cover adifferent race that will be on
your primary ballot thiselection.
When you go to vote, you willbe handed a ballot based on your
address and party affiliation.

(00:31):
If you are unaffiliatedsometimes also referred here as
independent then you will haveyour choice of which party's
ballot you would like to vote.
Please note that you are onlyable to cast one ballot and that
there are no primary ballotsfor the Green Party or the no
Labels Party.
Moreover, candidates for thegeneral election in November who

(00:52):
do not have a primarychallenger will not appear on
your primary ballot.
They get a pass directly to thegeneral election.
Due to time constraints and theplethora of candidates, and my
belief that having as muchinformation as possible is of
vast importance, our primaryelection segment will consist of
me covering one race at a time,as time allows, and going over

(01:16):
each candidate's website andwhat I can find on a simple
Google search, in case it iseasier for you to take in
information this way.
If you are short on time, youcan check out our NC Deep Dives
Voters Guide for the 2024primary election, found pinned
to our Facebook page or on thisepisode's show notes at www.
ncdeepdive.
com.

(01:39):
It will be an easy way toaccess each candidate's website
and research the candidates onyour own.
If that's a better use of yourtime.
Without further ado, my friends, let's dive in For this race.
We are going to be talkingabout the North Carolina Supreme
Court Associate Justice, seat 6.
On the Democratic primaryballot, the two candidates are

(02:01):
Allison Riggs and LauraChristine Cubbage.
We are going to start firstwith Justice Riggs.
Looking at her website, it saysMeet Justice Allison Riggs.
It has been a tremendous honorto serve on the North Carolina
Supreme Court since myappointment by Governor Roy
Cooper in September of 2023.
I'm excited about theopportunity to run for November

(02:24):
2024 for a full term on thecourt.
I've spent my entire careerfighting for equal justice under
the law for every person, regardless of wealth or skin
color.
Prior to my appointment to theNorth Carolina Court of Appeals
and then to the North CarolinaSupreme Court, I served as the
co-executive director forprograms and chief counsel for
voting rights at the SouthernCoalition for Social Justice in

(02:47):
Durham, north Carolina.
For the 14 years I was there, Ihad the privilege of advocating
for those who had beenmarginalized and disenfranchised
.
Arguing before the US SupremeCourt in several landmark
redistricting cases, my passionfor justice led me to become a
justice on the North CarolinaSupreme Court, where I am
building bridges to deliver onthat promise of equal justice

(03:08):
under the law.
I'm proud to approach all thecases that have and will come
before me with thoughtfulness, compassion and a commitment to
the rule of law in areas rangingfrom criminal law to family law
to business law.
As a justice, my guidingprinciples are integrity,
transparency, consistency andempathy.
Justice for all means that thedoors to the courthouse are not

(03:30):
arbitrarily slam shut, and Itake seriously my role in making
our judicial system accessibleand understood.
I earned my bachelor's degree, master's degree and jurors'
doctor all at the University ofFlorida.
Since then, I have devotedmyself to serving the community
and my profession throughassociations ranging from the
North Carolina Bar Associationand to the American Constitution

(03:51):
Society.
If elected to a full term, Iwill continue to work hard to
ensure that the Supreme Courtdelivers justice to all North
Carolinians without fear orfavor.
She does have an Instagram, facebook and Twitter or
ex-account.
Her endorsement she's beenendorsed by Governor Roy Cooper,

(04:13):
the NC State AFL-CIO, theSierra Club, the Progressive
Caucus.
She's been endorsed by theDurham Committee on the Affairs
of Black People PAC, the YoungDemocrats of North Carolina, the
People's Alliance, the CarolinaFederation PAC, the
no-transcript County VoterEducation Coalition and she's

(04:34):
been endorsed by ReplacementsLimited PAC for promoting
progressive candidates in NorthCarolina.
She has a tab for her opinions, some of the court cases that
she has been party to.
According to one website that Isaw, it discusses some of her
opinions as associate justice, including one that reversed a

(04:55):
lower court's opinion to denysuppressing evidence that was
collected by police during atraffic stop and that she also
ruled in favor of a news outlet, wbtv in Charlotte, over city
council when she ruled thatcertain records that the city
held were subject to disclosureunder the Public Records Act.
But there are eight cases thatshe lists here so you can read

(05:18):
her opinions if you'd like, andthat is basically the end of her
website.
Doing a Google search didn'tbring up anything outrageous
that I think would be cause forconcern.
She is listed on ballotpedia sothat's be a LLOT P-E-D-I-A dot
org.
You can search her name, alisonRiggs, there.
And for campaign finance forthe 2024 election, starting

(05:43):
January of last year.
Through December 31st of thisyear, her total contributions
have been $369,329.
She has 1,088 uniquecontributors to her campaign.
Her expenditures have totaled$59,375, and she's had 72 unique

(06:06):
payees.
She has not completed thecandidate connection survey on
ballotpedia but she did takepart in the NC Deep Dive Voters
Guide so you can read a littlemore about her there.
I do believe something came upfor the Raleigh News and
Observer their Voters Guide aswell for Justice Riggs.
Next up is Laura ChristineCubbage.

(06:28):
Her website iscubbage4ncsupremecom, just in
case I didn't mention Alison's,hers is Riggs R-I-G-G-S
forourcourtscom and that's F-O-Rspelled out.
So Riggs for our courtscom andLaura's again is Cubbage for the

(06:50):
number four NC Supremecom.
So that's Cubbage, the numberfour NC Supremecom, and it
starts with meet Judge LauraCubbage ensuring your rights.
For 17 years, judge LauraChristine Cubbage spent many
hours behind a barber chairgetting to know about the cares
and concerns of the citizens ofGreensboro, north Carolina.

(07:10):
It was there that she realizedshe had a higher calling to
serve and a space that wouldallow her to affect societal
change and impact toppolicymakers and leaders.
Laura has since served NorthCarolina as an Assistant
District Attorney, assistantAttorney General, district Court
Judge and as a Superior CourtJudge.
It lists an endorsement byMayor Mitch Colvin of

(07:33):
Fayetteville, north Carolina, and it looks like she has a
Facebook, linkedin, instagramand it looks like she has a
Facebook linked in Instagram andYouTube account that you can
find as well.
More about Laura Meet JudgeCubbage.
Superior Court Judge.
Post high school, laura embarkedon a diverse career, from a

(07:53):
city letter mail carrier toroles in manufacturing plants in
her hometown.
A pivotal move to Greensboro, north Carolina, unfolded a new
chapter as she embraced theidentity of a master barber.
For 17 years, laura's barbershop became a sanctuary for
candid conversations about thepoignant issues of judicial
inequality, shaping herperspective on the profound

(08:14):
impact of the justice system oneveryday lives.
Motivated by these heartfeltconversations, laura
courageously stepped out frombehind the barbers chair.
As a single mother, she pursuedhigher education, earning an
undergraduate degree insociology from North Carolina
agricultural and technical stateuniversity.
Her journey continued to theUniversity of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill School of Law, whereshe obtained her Juris

(08:37):
Doctorate.
This transformation from abarber to a legal scholar was
fueled by a burning desire toaddress the profound concerns of
inequality entrenched in thejustice system.
With her law license in hand, laura became the assistant
district attorney for GuilfordCounty from 2006 to 2011.
Her pursuit of justice wentbeyond incarceration, as she

(08:57):
actively contributed todeveloping alternative programs
for litigants, a testament toher compassionate approach to
accountability.
As an assistant attorneygeneral, she delved into
criminal appeals and workers'compensation cases, further
honing her understanding of thecomplexities of the legal
landscape.
In 2016, laura's journeyreached a milestone as she was
elected as District Court Judge, followed by a triumphant 2018

(09:21):
campaign for Superior CourtJudge for Judicial District 18A
of the North Carolina FourthSuperior Court Division.
Judge Cubbage's tenure on thebench, marked by an oath of
office on January 1, 2017,reflects eight years of
unwavering service to the state.
Her judicial philosophy, rootedin administering justice with

(09:41):
mercy, stems not only from legalexpertise but from her own
life's tapestry.
Laura's candidacy for the NorthCarolina Supreme Court is
imbued with a profoundunderstanding of the law's
governing cases, especially incivil rights and voting rights.
Her unique experience presidingover cases in both direct and
superior courts positions her asa judge who comprehensively

(10:02):
understands the impact andprecedent of every decision.
Yet, beyond the courtrooms andlegal chambers, laura Cubbage is
a pillar in the community, actively engaged in various
organizations, including theGreensboro Bar Association, nc
Bar Association, delta, sigma, beta Sorority and the Lynx
Incorporated.
She is not just a candidate buta community advocate, serving

(10:24):
on boards like the Board ofVisitors for North Carolina A&T
State University, piedmontCapital Funding and Family
Services of the Piedmont.
Laura's commitment extends farbeyond the confines of her
judicial rule as the March 5,2024 primary election approaches
.
Judge Cabbage's campaign forthe NC Supreme Court is not

(10:44):
merely about legal expertise.
It's a passionate call forchange, a change that bridges
the gap of mistrust between thejudiciary and the public,
addresses concerns of racialequity and advocates for
much-needed criminal justicereform.
And there is a video there aswell.
And then there are links tovolunteer, register to vote and
to donate.
Coming up Laura on ballotpediait does list her campaign

(11:09):
finance information, so for this2024 election, she has a total
of $96,569 in contributions.
The number of uniquecontributors is 54.
Her expenditures have totaled$11,492 and she's had 33 unique

(11:30):
payees.
She did not fill out the 2024ballotpedia survey responses.
There is something that shewrote in 2016 that was pulled
from her campaign website.
At that time, laura didparticipate in our NC Deep Dive
Voters Guide, so you can checkthe show notes for that, and I
did not see anything in IndieWeek in their Voters Guide for

(11:54):
this race at all.
Again, this was on theDemocratic primary for North
Carolina Supreme Court AssociateJustice seat six between Alison
Riggs and Laura ChristineKhabbage.
On another, when I wassearching Google, I did see a
site that said that Lauracurrently works as a Superior
Court Judge, a position she wasappointed to by Governor Roy

(12:18):
Cooper in 2018, and that she'sbeen endorsed by the African
American Caucus of NorthCarolina and the Guilford County
Simkins PAC.
I did not see either of thoseon her website, though, so I
cannot fully confirm either ofthose.
And again, this is for theDemocratic ballot for the NC
Supreme Court Associate Justiceseat six between Alison Riggs

(12:41):
and Laura Christine Khabbage.
Democracy is the foundation ofall we hold dear.
We are better as a community, state and nation when we all
take part in our civic duty bybeing informed and casting our
vote.
The candidates in offices onyour ballot can have a major

(13:01):
impact on our everyday lives andcan have real consequences.
They create and enforce ourlaws, invest in our future
well-being, fund all the thingslike our schools and roads,
ensure we have safe drinkingwater and food to put on our
tables and advocate on behalf ofthose they represent, hopefully
keeping in mind both the littleand the big picture of it all.

(13:24):
Early voting is now going on andwill continue through Saturday,
march 2nd.
Our closest early votinglocations will be the WE Hunt

(14:06):

We were blessed to have manycandidates take the time to
share their thoughts and speakto voters within Southern Wake
County.
The Voters Guide is arranged byparty affiliation and organized

(15:11):
in such a way to make itrelatively easy to find the
races or candidates you might beinterested in.
All candidates' websites arelinked.
If I was able to find one, Ialso consciously chose to
arrange the Voters Guidestarting at the end of the
ballot.

much about, or take the time tolearn about the smaller races.
