Julie Rogers (00:05):
No one ever said
life is easy, but I believe by
giving yourself permission, youwill find you have more control
over your life than you realize.
I'm Julie.
I hope you will join me bytaking responsibility for
yourself, by only controllingthe things you can and letting
go of the things that you can't.
By doing this, you will havediscovered the secret to having
(00:30):
happy, healthy and morefulfilling relationships.
This is Nearest And DearestPodcast.
I'm Julie Rogers and you arelistening to Episode 25, Get
Going Goals.
Before I get started with thistopic about goals, I'm happy to
(00:53):
tell you that I am nowofficially Julie Rogers.
Woody and I tied the knot onFriday, August 19th.
We are so thankful that ourfamilies and friends were able
to join us in celebrating ourlove.
Goals are part of your life.
(01:13):
From the moment you took thatfirst step as a baby, when you
were learning how to walk, youhad already achieved a milestone
goal.
As humans, we achieve goals ona regular basis and don't even
think twice about them.
Accomplishing long-term goalsare the hardest ones to see
(01:39):
through.
You have to make it a priorityto work on that goal within a
sustainable timeline.
You also have to accept thatyou will have some failures
along the way.
Half the battle is knowing youwill have obstacles, challenges
(02:02):
and possibly no support to keepyou going forward.
You have to ask yourself howimportant is this goal for me to
obtain?
You are the only person who cananswer that question truthfully
.
When I decided to create thispodcast, I was ready to make it
(02:27):
a priority in my life.
I was finally ready to putmyself out there and start doing
the research and learn theskills to actually put together
my own show.
You have to start at abeginning.
My beginning was to buy a bookabout podcasting and take notes
(02:53):
at the end of each chapter.
I called it Doing my Homework.
I would read and take notesfrom Monday through Friday.
I would begin right afterbreakfast and go off into a room
by myself and begin eachchapter.
I decided to read the chapterfirst, along with listening to
(03:18):
the audio version of it, andthen rewrite the chapter with my
own notes for me to referenceback to.
I connected with the bookquickly by using my headphones
while listening to the audioversion.
I was using all my senses toabsorb the material.
(03:41):
It also was cool that theauthor was the narrator.
By doing this, I almost feltlike I was in a private
classroom with a teacherexplaining how to start a
podcast.
This all happened in the wintermonths of 2021.
(04:05):
I took dealing with the COVIDreality we all were experiencing
and turned it into a chance forme to get the work done.
Woody and I were in NorthMyrtle Beach, South Carolina, in
a condo on the beach for thewhole winter.
(04:26):
Because of COVID restrictionsand protecting ourselves the
best way we could, we didn'tsocialize like we normally do.
I had nothing but time and nomore excuses as to why I wasn't
(04:47):
making this personal goal happen.
Timing is everything.
You have to align yourself withthe reality that, whatever your
goal is, you have to commit toit.
Of course, there were manytimes when I was getting
(05:08):
frustrated about figuring outall of this podcasting stuff,
but I wouldn't let it stop mefrom continuing on.
I would take a break.
It didn't consume my whole day, just a part of it.
I felt good at the end of eachday that I worked on it, that I
(05:31):
could enjoy my progress and taketime to appreciate Woody and
the beautiful scenery of notonly North Myrtle Beach but the
rest of South Carolina and NorthCarolina.
I was juggling a balancebetween my long-term goal and a
happy, healthy relationship withmyself and with Woody.
(05:55):
A well-balanced life shouldinclude time for yourself, time
with your significant other, family, friends and working
towards your own set of goals, one at a time.
Full disclosure here I havenever finished a very personal
(06:20):
long-term goal before.
Yes, I finished high school in1984.
I worked hard my whole lifewith various full-time jobs and
part-time jobs.
I raised my children.
I went to broadcasting schoolin 2002.
(06:42):
I made a demo for voiceoveracting in 2012, but I never
finished my demo to be on theradio.
This was my chance to createsomething, work hard to achieve
it and own it by putting it outthere for the world to embrace
(07:08):
it.
I needed to prove to myselfthat I could finish a very
personal goal, discover just howfar I could push myself and
break those self-doubts and facemy fears of failing.
(07:32):
I'm lucky to have support.
Woody has been one of mybiggest supporters.
He believes in me and thatmeans the world to me.
But I also believe that whenyou don't have that special
(07:52):
person who believes in you andyour goals, that you can still
achieve them.
That's where you have to loveyourself first, and no matter
what the naysayers say or howextremely hard it's going to be.
(08:13):
You can set that goal and workon it.
No one is going to hold youaccountable for your success.
You have to hold yourself tothe highest standard for you and
your accomplishments.
It could be your weight andyour health that you want to
(08:40):
change, or ending that badrelationship in your personal
life that is stopping you frombeing truly happy, or wanting to
end a job that you are dreadingto go to, or even figuring out
who you are and your purpose.
(09:02):
It all falls on you.
Once you start the real workneeded to obtain your goal, make
sure you are celebrating yoursmall wins.
When I finished my book, whichwas called The Big Podcast by
(09:23):
David Hooper, I knew it was thestart of a real beginning of me
becoming a podcaster.
I felt it.
I knew I was going to start thenext step, which was forming my
concept for my own show, andwas eager to begin.
(09:46):
I broke down the steps intoobtainable challenges and gave
myself a timeline that I knewwould be achievable.
Once I did that and held myselfaccountable, my success was
(10:06):
unfolding right before me.
There is nothing that isn'tobtainable if you are willing to
do the necessary work to obtainit.
I came across this quote bySteve Garvey.
He was a professional baseballplayer during the 1970s.
(10:30):
He played for the Los AngelesDodgers and the San Diego Padres
.
Quote "ou have to set goalsthat are almost out of reach.
If you set a goal that isattainable without much work or
thought, you are stuck withsomething below your true talent
(10:56):
and potential.
And quote I also learned alongthe way that it's okay to ask
for help.
When I was working on my radiodemo tape, I was overwhelmed
with how I was going to make ita success.
(11:18):
I didn't ask for the extraassistance I felt I needed to
guide me and for that reason Ihad self-doubt and fear.
When my personal life camebetween that goal and success, I
(11:40):
did what I needed to do andworked on my first marriage.
It was the right decision forme at that time.
Life happens and you do the bestthat you can, but don't let
that goal, when life'schallenges present themselves to
(12:04):
you, fade away.
You might have to refocus onthe reality in front of you, but
make sure you come back to thatgoal that consumes your mind
and soul.
Your goals come and go.
(12:26):
You either achieve them or youdon't.
Life will always be movingforward.
You can't get time back, butyou can make the most of it,
along with your own goals, andface the challenges and push
(12:47):
yourself.
Make the mistakes, learn fromyour failures, ask for help when
needed.
Find the supportive familymembers and friends, because
when you do, you will havediscovered that anything worth
(13:08):
having is worth all your effortand sacrifices.
Don't have regrets.
It's when you stop having goalsthat you give up trying to be
the best version of yourself.
Now go, get going on your goals.
(13:37):
