Julie Rogers (00:05):
No one ever said life is easy, but I believe by
giving yourself permission youwill find you have more control
over your life than you realize.
I'm Julie.
I hope you will join me bytaking responsibility for
yourself, by only controllingthe things you can and letting
go of the things that you can't.
By doing this, you will havediscovered the secret to having

(00:30):
happy, healthy and morefulfilling relationships.
This is Nearest And DearestPodcast.
I'm Julie Rogers and you arelistening to Season 3, Episode 3
, Finding Happiness.
I wear a baseball cap that hasa patch on the front panel.
It says in white letters WickedHappy.

(00:52):
I lived in Connecticut for over20 years, so the word wicked,
attached to any adjective, isused as slang for New Englanders
, meaning very or awesome.
My son, Sean, got it for me oneyear for Christmas.
I actually asked him to get itfor me.
Woody and I enjoyed the showMaine Cabin Masters and if you

(01:20):
have never seen it, it's a funshow about a close-knit crew who
live in Maine and they'recontractors that work on
restoring or renovating oldercabins.
Their accents remind me of NewEngland, and the work they do is
outstanding.
One particular episode a fewyears back showed Chase, he's
one of the owners and he waswearing a particular baseball
cap that caught my attention.

(01:42):
I kept looking at it and Irealized it said Wicked Happy.
I love that.
I use Wicked a lot in myconversations, especially when
I'm extra excited.
I feel I'm a Wicked Happyperson.
So I googled the hat from theshow and found a website that
was selling it.
I forwarded it to Sean andAshley and told them this would

(02:05):
be a cool gift for me forChristmas and, if I remember,
they both laughed about it.
But by Christmas that year Iopened the present and there it
was.
I was wicked excited.
I wear that hat every morningwhen I walk or I take a hike,
even when I need to hide a badhair day.

(02:26):
It's a great reminder about howI feel about my life.
Of course, I'm not 100% happyevery single moment.
I have life's ups and downs, just like you.
I'm so very grateful for thewonderful happy moments that
have become etched into my heartever since I can remember.
Being mindful about realizingwhat makes you happy is an

(02:51):
ever-evolving journey that willconstantly change and adapt to
your own life's perceptions thatonly you get to realize is true
for you.
When I decided to talk aboutfinding happiness, I wanted to
search my memory from as farback as I could.
I believe happiness comeseasier when we were kids.

(03:14):
I was lucky to pull out thesecherished times that still give
me my first glimpse into howhappiness feels.
I have many, many happy momentsfrom my childhood.
Soft serve ice cream fromClark's it was a small town ice
cream stand in Dexter, New York.
It is definitely a big part ofmy happy childhood moments.

(03:39):
My favorite memory was sittingin my parents' station wagon
along with my siblings.
My youngest sister, Jo-Jo, thebaby of the family, was having a
hard time with keeping up witheating her soft-serve ice cream
on a cone before it startedmelting everywhere.
So as a good older sister, Ioffered to help her out.

(04:02):
She handed me her cone cone andI would gladly slurp it to stop
the dripping and then hand itback to her.
Getting ice cream in the summerwas a big treat for us and if
you are ever in Dexter New York, you can go to Jody's Dairy Bar,
which used to be Clark's orLickety Split Ice Cream Shop.

(04:24):
I might be a little biased, butboth places offer delicious
soft serve.
The Twist is my favorite.
Most of my treasured childhoodmemories that left me feeling
happy involved being outside.
I was lucky to have lived inBrownville, a small town where

(04:47):
kids could hang outside and playhide-and-go-seek, hopscotch,
mother may I, tag and ride ourbikes.
We lived right across thestreet from where the summer
recreation playground was.
Many happy memories came fromthere.
Well, one year I was aroundfive or six.
I was in the end of summertalent show.
Pug, who was a wonderful adultwho was a volunteer of the

(05:09):
summer rec program, convinced meto sing a song which, by the
way, I will never claim to be agood singer, but it never has
stopped me from singing.
But I was a little kid and Imust have shown some spunk.
It was Raindrops Keep Fallingon my Head by BJ Thomas.

(05:30):
She would invite me over to herhome for practice.
She would play this song overand over again on her record
player until I knew every word.
I have a memory of singing thesong in front of the audience,
which consisted of the familieswho had their children in the

(05:50):
show.
I think the audience got tovote for their favorite.
I vaguely have a memory ofpeople writing down a name and
turning it in.
To my surprise, I was votedqueen and Tommy Gonseth was
voted king.
It was a special, happy momentfor me.
I remember I had a homemadecrown and a long red robe, and

(06:15):
so did Tommy.
We had special chairs thatresembled a throne that we got
to sit on.
He was older than me but Ithink I gave him a quick kiss on
the cheek.
There might have been someencouragement from everyone
around us.
Pug also worked at my elementaryschool in the cafeteria.

(06:36):
She knew me from school as wellas the summer rec program.
When I broke my left arm in thefirst grade, I remember her
assisting me with my lunch tray.
I know I wasn't the only kidwho felt special around her.
She touched many lives and Iwill always be happy listening
to Raindrops Keep F alling On MyHead.

(06:59):
Here's one of the verses.
"But there's one thing I knowthe blues they send to meet me
won't defeat me.
It won't be long till happinesssteps up to greet me.

(07:21):
Raindrops keep falling on myhead, but that doesn't mean my
eyes will soon be turning red.
Crying's not for me, cause I'mnever gonna stop the rain by
complaining because I'm free, nothing's worrying me.

(07:46):
" Okay, here's another fun fact.
This song was written for themovie Butch Cassidy and the
Sundance Kid in 1969 with PaulNewman, Robert Redford and
Katharine Ross.
It's easier finding happinesswhen things are going your way.

(08:08):
You got that promotion youdeserve.
You found the love of your life.
The officer gave you a warningand not a speeding ticket or
countless other things thathappened to you that puts a big
smile on your face.
When the sun is shining andyou're on vacation, you
appreciate the time with yourfamily or friends.
You might still have worries onyour mind, but your focus is

(08:32):
going to be on the present.
That's when you get to relax.
Enjoy quality time with yourloved ones.
Use this opportunity to feelconnected.
Our friends Pat and Michaelvisited us in Puerto Rico
recently.
We were grateful to havebeautiful tropical weather along
with plenty of sunshine to warmour spirits.

(08:55):
Woody and I were tour guides.
Even though we are stillfiguring out this wonderful
island ourselves, we are proudto show our friends our second
home away from home.
Last year, during the wintermonths, was all about getting
our condo settled and furnished.
Woody had just finished ourguest bathroom before our

(09:16):
friends arrived.
We are happy with how our hardwork mostly Woody's talent and
muscle made our condo our home.
We checked out some places wehave been before, but also some
new ones as well.
I'm happy to say we have beendoing more relaxing this winter
than last.
Just a couple more smallprojects to tackle next winter.

(09:44):
So how do you find happinesswhen things aren't going your
way?
I remind myself that happinessis a state of mind.
The key to discovering tochoose to be happy is easier
than you think.
I found some tips to share withyou from happiness.
com.
Number one trick your brain.

(10:06):
Happiness starts with a smile.
There are studies showing thatsmiling sends positive feedback
to the brain, even when you'reforcing it.
This is because the brain canpick up cues from our body to
generate certain moods byreleasing a bunch of feel-good
hormones.
Also, smiling calms us down byslowing our heart rate.

(10:30):
So putting on a grin canimprove your mood at times when
you need it the most.
My tip, I smile at anyone Icome across in my path on my
everyday walks or the grocerystore, wherever I am.
It doesn't matter if I knowthem or not.
I simply say hello and smile.

(10:55):
I'm putting a positive out intothe world and it makes me and
the person receiving it feelgood.
Number two count your blessings.
Stop focusing on what you don'thave.
You think you'll be happy whenyou get whatever you want, but
that's not always true.
Instead, think about the thingsyou do have.
That makes your life precious.

(11:16):
I have written down myblessings, things I'm grateful
for.
It helps when your life ischallenging and it's harder to
think positively.
True gratitude will help shapeyour happiness as a choice.
Number three start your day theright way.
Give yourself 10 to 15 minutesand try meditating.

(11:40):
Don't be intimidated about whatthat looks like.
Just clear your mind and focuson positive thoughts.
Think of something that bringsyou peace.
It can be as simple asappreciating your ability to
breathe.
Recognize your breath, haverunning water to shower with a

(12:03):
roof over your head.
You decide what your positivesare.
Number four change perspective.
If you're like me, dreary, coldweather with no sunshine can
affect my attitude.
I need the sun and warmth togive me energy, and if you are

(12:23):
dealing with serious problemsand the weather is making it
worse, try looking for sunshinein another way.
Maybe read a book about adestination you would like to
visit someday, or watch a moviethat makes you laugh.
Scroll through your own photosof memories that make you smile.
By changing your perspective, you are giving yourself the

(12:47):
power to find happiness, nomatter what.
I kept a little video of mygranddaughter Eloise when she
was around three.
I used to watch a morning showon HLN called Morning Express
with Robin Mead.
Her tagline was good morningsunshine.
I wanted Eloise to say thatexpression so I could record it.

(13:10):
I have three different littlevideos of her wearing her cute
little flower nightgown andbelting out good morning
sunshine! Whenever I need alittle boost myself, all I have
to do is bring up that video.
It puts a big smile on my faceevery time.

(13:34):
Number five find and givesupport.
Isolation and loneliness arealways around us and can make us
feel miserable, even when wehave reasons to be joyful.
I have had those moments when Ichoose to interact with my
friends or family during thosetimes I feel better than
handling it on my own.

(13:55):
When you find the right supportwith others, it not only helps
yourself, but also you give backto them as well.
Surround yourself with positiveinfluences.
You will attract morelike-minded people who have your
best interest at heart.
Number six do a kind act a day.

(14:18):
The power of kindness is thereal deal.
Being nice is proven to boostyour mood, lower your stress and
reduce anxiety.
It can be as easy as holding adoor open for a stranger to
helping a senior get an item offthe top shelf in a grocery
store.

(14:38):
The limits are endless.
The world needs more acts ofkindness and you can make a
difference every day.
Look for those opportunities.
Number seven find meaning andpurpose.
I've talked about this before.
As I'm getting older, I havethe desire to find purpose,

(15:02):
especially at this stage of mylife.
I'm retired and making thispodcast a part of my life gives
me a sense of both.
I feel very blessed to have thelove of my life right beside me
.

(15:22):
Woody always encourages me tochallenge myself.
One of the biggest joys in lifeis exploring and discovering
what we're here for and what wecan contribute to the world, or
at least to those around us.
Number eight cut down sources ofunhappiness.
This is a biggie.
Spending too much time onsocial media can contribute to

(15:46):
insecurity when we compareourselves to others.
This can lead to feelings ofdepression and a sense of
dissatisfaction with our lives.
Don't compare your life toothers.
Have your own goals and dreams.
Focus on what you have to do toobtain the life you want.

(16:08):
No one has it all.
All of us are navigating ourlives, weaving in and out of
challenges, obstacles andhardships that set us back.
By choosing happiness as yourmindset, it is a personal,

(16:29):
intentional decision that youare encouraging yourself to find
joy in your everyday life'sjourney, not a bad way to
finding and keeping your ownhappiness.
I would love to hear about howyou choose happiness as a
mindset.

com.
I will share it on a futureepisode.
Let's focus on the positives inour lives.
There is so much negative outthere in the world.
Each of us can make adifference by smiling every
chance you get.
It's contagious.
