(00:13):
Well, hello and welcome to the Movie Guard Society podcast
brought to you by Nurtropolis. I'm your host Sean Toshiba, the
mayor of Nurtropolis and join meas always is my Co host Drew
Vanhausen, the professional media and movie mastermind and
well, I guess a happy 4th of July.
I mean, it's early, but it's almost there, a few hours until.
It's 4th of July, Eve, yes. I guess we can call it that.
(00:36):
That should be a holiday too. I feel like 'cause today was
kind of kind of like 1/2 day I think for most people as well.
Yes. But we're excited to be here
'cause we're trying to find timeover this holiday weekend to do
something and we're able to cause Drew got around to finally
watching Jurassic World Rebirth. But before we do get into that,
(00:57):
I want to mention quickly one ofpie, honestly my favorite movie
of the year, F1. And Drew, you told me you got to
finally see it. You can check out my review on
our tropos.com. I honestly gave it a full 5 star
review. I think it's the best movie of
the year so far, the best racingmovie ever made.
I thought was a great epic IMAX experience.
But Drew, what do you think about F1?
(01:19):
I did. I enjoyed it.
I had a not very good theatricalexperience not to throw any
theaters under the bus but I didgo here in Houston to see it in
IMAX which I don't usually do like.
I went to go see and the real deal IMAX it was a rainy day
with bad weather. The theater was having power
electrical issues due to the badweather and the projector had
(01:41):
issues and the movie started about 45 minutes late.
And then around the time that itwas starting, I had an important
phone call, had to step out. So I missed like the 1st 15
minutes of the movie where there's a huge race scene that
apparently is very good. I missed that.
And then I had a commitment after the movie and because the
movie started late, I had to leave before it was over,
(02:03):
missing the last couple of minutes.
So I, I saw most of the whole thing.
I'm just full transparency here.I, I actually, I'm eager to go
see it again because I. I want to tell you this, if it
was going to start late I would have just cut my losses.
They will refund you. It's a great theater.
They will give money back. Reschedule Drew when things like
that arrive. Next time just walk out, get a
(02:25):
refund and just reschedule because you want the best.
Experience complimentary, like rain check.
They did hand those out after soI can go see a different movie
there. It just was like it was a prime
time in my day where I was out and about to see it and then
going to an event after and it would have been more out of my
way to go back home in between. So I stuck it out, but then the
(02:47):
phone call messed things up and then me having to leave a little
bit early. Now I saw like the conclusion to
the racing storyline in the movie.
I think there's just maybe we'relike a couple more character
moments after the facts. Like, you know, I don't feel
like I missed much there, but the opening race scenes
apparently are really cool and Imissed that.
(03:09):
That being said, from what I saw, taking that with a grain of
salt, I, I, I, I probably like, I know that you've rated it so
highly is one of your favorites of the year.
I think this is probably one of the best movies to see in
theaters this year because the racing and the way it looked now
seeing it in IMAX, it was super crisp, it was loud.
(03:32):
It was absolutely the ideal way to see it.
The race scenes, the way everything, the way it looked
was incredible. And just like Top Gun Maverick,
the way I would have described that it's a movie movie like
this is what you go to the theaters to see.
I thought some of the performances were a little
shoddy, like Brad Pitt, who I enjoy, felt like there were
(03:53):
parts of it that were really good.
Other parts felt like he was phoning it in from the
performance side, from the racing side.
It seems like that's what he wasinterested in, right?
Like he was doing a lot of thoseraces.
I mean, they filmed this at, they filmed this at real F1
races. Those are real tracks, a lot of
real footage walking the the pitlanes, All that stuff is, is
real. And yeah, watching IMAX,
(04:15):
Emmanuel says he saw F1 and 40X and it was amazing.
I don't know if Emmanuel has a really good chiropractor to go
visit after all these 40X screenings that he does 'cause I
can't do that. I, I highly recommend watching
it again, Drew and Apple, Apple, whatever, original film,
whatever. Apple in general has really
(04:35):
knocked out The quality of filmsand television that they've been
doing have been really great andI'm glad this got a theatrical
release. And that's what I'll just say
about F1. I definitely highly recommend
that. Yeah, there's a whole other
conversation about Apple theatrical releases and I think
all of those movies have been very good, but to but box office
success has been something that's been lacking there until
(04:56):
F1 so far has been a success forApple.
They don't have any other theatrical movies on the slate
upcoming, but I'm hoping the F1 changes that 'cause I know that
they've been investing a lot andnow we've actually seen a little
bit more of a box office success.
So, and especially cause F1's huge internationally and, and to
be honest, it made me want to investigate a little bit of F1.
(05:18):
Like I kind of have a little bitof interest in the sport and I
don't even know where to start but.
You have a little need for speed.
It seems like Drew, a little gasoline got in your blood.
Yep. That's that's awful here.
Yeah. No, it really kind of got me
back into like, I really want toget back into the racing side of
my life, which I had fun times going on road courses and drag
(05:39):
trips and all that stuff. I kind of miss it.
So maybe I get back into it. Who knows?
But yeah, on today's episode, we're all about Jurassic World
Rebirth. It's the latest entry to bring
back, you know, this iconic franchise, maybe back to life.
Well, you know, we'll talk aboutthat.
If it's a true rebirth. Did it work?
We'll have our thoughts. But before we dig into the new
(06:00):
movie, I want to rewind a littlebit.
Jurassic Park, honestly, the original film, one of my
favorite films ever. I'm a big fan of the franchise
in general, big fan of Dinos andI think that first film is super
untouchable. Lots of wonder, suspense, the
dinosaurs, the the practical effects, building that out.
If you watch the documentary, I forget what it is, there's a
(06:20):
bunch of them, but there's one, I think the movies that maybe
the movies that made us, I thinktalked about Jurassic Park and
then the behind the scenes stuff.
Anything you can see about that film is amazing.
So, Drew, I want to start off with asking where the original
Jurassic Park ranks for you, anddo you remember the first time
watching it? Well, it's a five star
masterpiece, easily. I've seen it countless times.
(06:42):
I just rewatched it this year, probably a couple months ago,
knowing that this was coming out.
And so, yeah, endlessly rewatchable.
I love it. I think The thing is, is it came
out when I was 4 and so I was probably a little young to see
it in the theater. I actually saw The Lost World
before seeing the original Jurassic.
(07:03):
Park I think I was the same way I think I was the same way with
you because I remember seeing lost world in theaters, the
blockbuster, you know, maybe watched it at home the.
First one, The Lost World, I would have been 8 when it came
out. So it was this just absolutely
prime age to see it in theaters. And so that I loved that one
because I saw it then and then of course then went back and saw
(07:24):
the original and would switch between them all the time.
But I had, I remember having theThe Lost World VHS tape that had
like this holographic dinosaur on the front.
It was like a really cheesy VHS cover.
But those are the types of things.
We had them in the 90s. Yeah, that's true.
I mean, I think I remember the VHS we're talking about.
I do remember watching The Lost World vividly in theaters and
(07:46):
that scene, obviously when the dinosaur is on the boat and they
get into the towards the end of the film and then obviously
comes into the town, very, very scary.
Honestly, that was very terrifying.
And I don't think that movie also gets a lot of love.
I don't know why. The Lost World actually, I think
is very watchable and actually areally good installment.
(08:06):
I know it's definitely differentthan the the first film, but I
think it it fits the franchise very, very well.
When they announced Rebirth after the last two films not
being what I wanted, I was superhopeful.
Drew, were you hopeful about this film?
Where were I guess Fallen Kingdom and Dominion worth of
(08:29):
those land for you? They didn't land very well, I'll
put it that way. I actually liked.
There's a lot of things online you can read or watch about the
original Jurassic World movie and people tearing it apart.
I think that's a great popcorn movie and I enjoyed seeing that
in. Theaters the first Jurassic
World movie is actually really good and really fun and it was a
(08:52):
great way to bring back the franchise it.
Definitely has a lot of flaws, but as far as like a fun popcorn
experience with dinosaurs, everything on the big screen, I
think it's a really good experience.
Fallen Kingdom, Lesso and Dominion I pretty much outright
(09:13):
rejected as I was watching it like my my brain did not like
that movie and I just as it was happening, I was like, why, why,
why is this happening? Were you we I did a podcast on
fresh out the podcast. My other podcast, we did an
episode. Were you on that episode?
We talked, we talked, we talked Dominion and I'm pretty sure I
was with you all on that one. I think you.
(09:33):
Were you can go find that in the.
Archives. I think we all felt that about
Dominion. So like when they announced this
film and they said, like Garth Edwards is part of it.
They're bringing back the original screenwriter, Jurassic
Park. I thought this was going to
recapture that spark. But man, I'm going to say it
right now. This movie was extremely planned
(09:54):
and an utter disappointment to me.
I'm going to just come out. Just come out and just say it.
Drew, I have to get it off my chest.
But I need to ask you though, what were your expectations
going in anything like mine, especially with the kind of the
team behind it? And did you bite into the hype
before watching it? No, I feel like I was cautiously
optimistic because it felt like from when Dominion came out to
(10:19):
win, which like ended that trilogy, right?
Like the Jurassic World trilogy for when they announced this
one, it felt like a really quickturn around.
And Universal was for sure trying to play with the
narrative here. If they had stuff out there of
like we received a script that was just too good to be true.
(10:39):
And then there is the narrative that like Scarlett Johansson
like was begging to be in a Jurassic World or Jurassic Park
movie, like she actively really wanted to do 1, which that part
of it is true. She did she, she likes this
franchise, wanted to be in one of these.
But it sounds like the real narrative is, is that Universal
was looking at their slate and didn't have a big blockbuster
(11:02):
for the summer of 2025. And they're like, we need to
fast track a Jurassic World movie.
And that's how they made this one happen.
It's like the hybrid kind of mutant dinosaurs that appear in
this movie. I feel like that's kind of what
this screenplay is. There are some cool set pieces
and and cool moments in it, but in a a pieced together package
(11:26):
that does not all work. My, my to go with what you were
saying Sean, my letterbox reviewjust said wound period that that
was my reply. Therapy.
Entertainment. I walked out within the 1st 20
minutes. It was that bad for me 20.
Minutes are tough. It's a lot of information
(11:47):
overload. It was weird, but I'll tell you
I would have. I was about to walk out in
general because our our theater had no AC.
That's tough because if. There's anything that's going to
affect your movie watching experience.
It's not having AC in the theater.
The whole point of the theater is to get out of the summer heat
and get into the AC and watch a movie and.
(12:07):
I was on this island, apparentlywatching it.
I will say that I have to say this.
You know, you talk about Scarlett Johansson.
Yeah, she's a big fan of the franchise, so they gave her the
film. I do want to mention you see
this clip here. I thought this was going to be a
high intensity scene and it was not because in the trailers you
see like a tail coming up behindthem and they're like, all
(12:29):
right, this is going to be a high intensity scene and it was
not at all. I'll say this, I just was bummed
out about all these characters. None of them stood out to me.
I didn't feel connected to anyone.
The stakes kind of felt low and the story was just kind of
there. So did you have any characters
you actually enjoyed or was it the same for you?
(12:49):
Like no one to root for, no one believable.
I didn't believe Scarlett Johans's character knew how to
handle a gun because when she's like on the boat trying to shoot
it, she's struggling a little bit to even just like to hold
it. I know they're on a speeding
boat, but when it's calm, there's like 1 scene where she
can't really. She just looks into the scope
oddly, like she's not really themercenary or whatever she's
(13:12):
supposed to be on it. I thought Scarjo's performance
was fine, but the character was kind of was just very meh.
And I feel like Mahershala Ali was underused in it.
I thought Jonathan Bailey was decent.
Like I feel like he's kind of charming and he's on a good run
from Wicked and has, you know, Wicked for good coming out later
(13:34):
this year. And I, I actually enjoyed him
for the most part, but there's also a family that's introduced
in this movie and that really felt like really unnecessary.
It it, it really felt like it, we're going to put these in
there so that we have a child inperil because that's what they
always need in the Jurassic Parkmovies.
(13:54):
And I I just like because they really served no purpose.
This was odd, I didn't think we needed this.
Honestly. The adding more characters in
the movie that already feels small made no sense.
There's really not that much risks from like in a crazy
amount of scenarios. It's really in the beginning the
(14:16):
same Dinos coming back for Part 2 to kind of get more revenge.
I do want to mention another comment here from Nerd Champs
that we're torn. One of us thinks it was far and
away the worst, one of us thinksDominion Fallen Kingdom were the
worst, but both agree this is not the world that cried and
imagined it's. It's odd because there are parts
of the book that wasn't used in the first film that are in here,
(14:39):
which a couple of scenes are actually pretty good.
But adding this family and then you have this team that really
didn't have chemistry with Mahershala Ali and Scarlett
Johansson. It's like they really didn't
know each other. And it's funny.
You're watching the press. If you watch the press tour,
they're all awesome together andfriendly.
But that chemistry you see during the press tour, I did not
see that in the movie, especially if they were.
(14:59):
They've worked together in the past and so forth.
So yeah, there's like really no one likable to me.
Well, and you mentioned that, you know, David Capp, the is is
a screenwriter they brought backfor this one.
He Co wrote the screenplay of the original Jurassic Park with
Michael Crichton. And so like, you know, in in
(15:20):
doing so, you kind of got like the Force Awakens version of
Jurassic World, but worse, because there is a lot of like
replaying the hits of the first movie, the scene that you
mentioned earlier with the tall grass like that you showed the
picture of. And you know, it seemed like
that pretty much just ended up being a total replay of the
(15:40):
brontosaurus scene from the original movie.
There's a scene in the towards the end of the movie that takes
place in like a convenience store that kind of is
reminiscent of the Raptor scene at the end of the original.
There's just there's a lot of like just almost feeling like
homage, but lazy it like it justit didn't have the same effect.
(16:04):
Like those things didn't have any, I don't know, didn't have
the gusto. It didn't have like the tension
or or the the. Feels obviously, going back to
that one picture I show with Scarlett in the grass.
And then in the trailer it showsthem kind of sneaking around and
a giant tails behind them and you're like, all right, this is
danger. No, we get these dinosaurs that
(16:25):
are in love. That's what the scene is.
There's no action at all. And then there's like 1000 of
them up over, you know, towards,I don't know, in the Canyon or
whatever you want to call it. And the problem is I'm in the
human element too. I think the, the dinosaurs and
everything else that kind of follows it because these mutated
dinosaurs, I don't know, we love, I love the Jurassic Park
(16:47):
and Jurassic World because obviously they don't look
realistic cause science said, you know, they have feathers.
Dinosaurs didn't look like what we saw in Jurassic Park.
They have more research on that. But introducing brand new like
mutated dinosaurs from imagination and making them look
kind of cheesy or just kind of aRIP off of other stuff was not
the way to go. I didn't like kind of the
storyline where they needed the DNA from these three massive
(17:10):
Dinos just so they can't help cure, where they try to cure
just. Heart.
Disease, heart disease, extend life and stuff like that and I
honestly thought they would justneed DNA from that crazy mutated
1. And going back to that.
The beginning scenes of the movie were probably some of the
best scenes. I thought the intro.
(17:32):
What year did they say this tookplace in?
Do you recall when this what year this was supposed to be?
It would. Have been 2008 because I think
it said 17 years previously and I believe this movie was taking
place in 2025. OK, if that's the OK, well,
Dominion takes this movie takes place five years after Dominion,
so. Well, they said at the opening
crawl or the opening deal, it came out and said like 32 years
(17:57):
ago, dinosaurs were brought back.
And that lines up with 93 when the original Jurassic Park movie
came out. So that's why I assumed like
we're kind of on a real timelinehere.
Yeah. And so this this scene was kind
of odd because it was like they had these like a summary of
whatever, like AI don't know what you call what do you call
(18:17):
those like the prelude or whatever to keep touching.
It's, it's the Yeah, that's right.
Like the, like the prologue, theOR, you know, whatever you
describe it as. I was like, this is odd.
Is this like a Star Wars film where they're like, all right,
this happened and now since thenthis has happened and.
And that was weird. And this was probably the most
terrifying part of the movie, honestly, in the very beginning
(18:38):
and. I would agree.
I also find it terrifying that ascience lab this advance can be
completely disrupted by a Snickers wrapper.
And the way they had that Snickers wrapper was a joke to
me. I was like, you're really
thinking that guy's that not caring about protocol when
you're dealing with something like that.
I always thought this would be the most tight fit.
I thought everything was just a lot of weak spots.
(18:59):
It it just didn't make sense fora state-of-the-art state art
facility and and so forth. And the CGI was not that great,
you know? Which is a shame because Gareth
Edwards, this whole thing is, ishaving great CGI kind of on a on
a budget. You know, he's, he is a visual
effects artist and, and like I thought the creator, you know,
(19:23):
the last movie he directed looked amazing.
It had some plot problems too, but I was so fascinated with how
that movie looked that I was able to overlook that.
And I I just never felt that wayin Jurassic World Rebirth and
you know, comparing to the original, it's like you rewatch
Jurassic Park and the scene where the giant T Rex head is
(19:44):
nudging the Jeep and it's a practical giant head that they
built. Or the scene with the Raptors
where they are puppeteered Raptors and things like those
things hold up now and look great.
There's a set piece in the middle of this movie that
actually is a scene. I really liked it.
One of the set pieces I liked the most, which involved the T
Rex. But there's a part where like
the. T Rex head goes between two
(20:06):
rocks and it is clearly a CG T Rex head and I'm like it just
doesn't have the same effect as like a giant puppeteered T Rex
head. That is truly scary.
Yeah, you can tell a lot of times how much was that blue
screen. So much of it you could tell was
blue screen. And they just inserted the
actors in there. And I hated that because we grew
(20:27):
up with with technology wasn't what we have today.
And they can't make anything that looks as great that you can
actually touch these dinosaurs in person.
That's how I felt like with the first two films, that you can
actually like reach out and touch these, you know, dinosaurs
that looked amazing. And yeah, nothing was nothing
stood out to me and I wanted to see more.
I guess they call this the D Rex, right?
(20:48):
This is the D Rex, Not even the T Rex.
I guess maybe. No, I think the D Rex is the.
Oh, is the big one the mutation?Alley.
Yeah, that's what they're calling the D Rex.
Oh, OK. Well, this T Rex looks a little
different to me, so I don't knowwhat you want to call them, but
I would rather have seen this T Rex chase everybody until they
got to the Big Daddy, because the other ones were just
(21:09):
pointless. The the I'll, I'll say this like
watching this movie, it's not like Dominion where I watched it
and I was outright like, why is this movie about locusts?
I don't like anything about this.
Like I was outright rejecting that movie as I was watching it.
I didn't have that this time with this.
I just kind of felt nothing the whole time.
(21:30):
Like I didn't hate it. Like I, I wasn't actively
disliking it as I was watching it, but there is also no
excitement or tension for me as I was watching it.
Like I was just like, OK, let's just see what the next big set
pieces and see what the dinosaurs aren't.
Like there's a a long time wherethey're on the water in in the
first half of the movie. And I thought a lot of that was
like pretty decent. I really liked the T Rex scene.
(21:54):
As I mentioned, we talked about replaying the hits where they
kind of recreate the brontosaurus scene from the
original movie. That's fine.
You do the big sweeping score. Yeah, there you have it, the
image of it. You have the big sweeping score.
But again, I'm like, I've seen this before.
And the only part where I actively was kind of like not
feeling this was the end, like the climax.
Because the big mutant dinosaur that has been teased and all the
(22:18):
promos and everything for this, I just, I wasn't feeling it.
I was like this. I don't find this scary.
Well, you don't think? About this, that looks real.
I mean, you could barely see it.Like I just, I don't like it.
I don't like this. Yeah, Emmanuel says none of the
dinosaurs interact with each other.
Everyone got their own solo scene, which is weird.
And and the island didn't seem that big.
(22:39):
There was not really much Dino on Dino action as much as you
would want. I kind of wanted to see there
was a couple maybe, but not so much.
And and yeah, going back to thisbig daddy right here, night
time, a lot of smoke, couldn't really tell really how big it
is. It's like, where's all the smoke
coming from? It's like all of a sudden
there's smoke everywhere. When this dinosaur's coming out.
(23:00):
I'm like, I like fog. Yeah, I guess it was fog.
And then apparently, and then wehave the big what?
These pterodactyl, pterodactyl type things, whatever you want
to call these mutated birds thatlive in a cave that apparently
humans lived in before, right. So some type of civilization,
(23:21):
some type of civilization was here before.
And then that got me interested.I'm like, well, what is this?
Can can we get some back story on what was living on this
island? And kind of odd.
Why, why did they have to make it look like a civil, a
civilization way back in the daylived there.
There are random caves sometimesin the side of the mountains or,
you know, cliffs. So you didn't have to make it
(23:42):
look like people lived on this island at at at some point.
Like I said, I made a mistake watching this in a pack theater
with no AC, so that made the struggle hard.
But I just like you said, I didn't feel anything as well.
I just thought this was a pointless movie.
It's similar to Jurassic Park 3,which actually I like, but I
know a lot of people don't because it's kind of pointless
(24:02):
as well. It's just a way to just offer
another Jurassic Park movie. This is where I feel about this
one. Jurassic World Rebirth is just
another reason to give us another Dino movie but not
really what quality. But I still think Jurassic Park
3 is a better film than JurassicWorld Rebirth.
Yeah, this to me is just completely middle of the pack
Jurassic Park movie. Like I, I was kind of doing my
(24:24):
rankings before and despite likeI like I know we've been kind of
dogging on this or the, the, thetone of the conversation hasn't
been overly positive. Like I probably I like this for
sure better than Fallen Kingdom and Dominion.
And I probably like it a little bit better than three also,
although I think they can be kind of interchangeable.
But like I would rank Jurassic Park and Jurassic World and the
(24:45):
lost world above this one. And then the other three I would
potentially put below. Like this is just to me right in
the middle of the pack. Again, I think there are some
cool set pieces in it. Is there though because a lot of
it CG, how many are actually built?
I'm trying to figure out like how much was actually built out.
I'm just saying like action, like action sequences that
(25:06):
worked for me, like the Mosasaurus stuff was was kind of
interesting. The I do really like, you know,
the sleeping T Rex on its back and then how that transition
like I enjoyed that sequence. Did you like Dolores?
Did you like this little Dolores?
No, not really. I heard someone else compare
(25:26):
this to like, we have to have a Baby Yoda S character in this
movie, like to sell toys. And I didn't think of it that
way as I was watching it. But in hindsight, I'm like,
yeah, I guess that's kind of what this was because I mean, I
I honestly thought Dolores was like going to end up being
nefarious. I'm like, gosh, she's feeding
this thing licorice. But like, what's it going to do
or what's it going to lead to? And like, nothing, it ends up
(25:48):
being just this like, little friendly companion.
But yeah, you know, that's another thing that's interesting
too. Is that this movie, the 7th
movie, it's a, it's a new, you know, all new characters.
I do think. What's Sam Neil's character's
name? Alan.
Alan Grant. Doctor Alan.
Grant, thank you. Like Alan, Grant is referenced.
(26:08):
Oh yeah, I thought that was so like forced.
Super forced. Yeah, it like so, So I mean they
are kind of trying to to tie it in, but like this does not end
with really any kind of cliffhanger.
It doesn't set up anything new, which I thought was interesting.
I'm like, for a franchise, it's a huge franchise for Universal
(26:29):
that you presumably they're going to want to have another
one coming out and, you know, by2028, but it's didn't really set
up anything like, is Scarjo going to come back for another
one of these? Please don't just just I don't
want to follow this group any longer.
I, I was not a fan of this team.I, I was not a fan.
And going back like this was probably one of the best scenes
(26:51):
was the the raft scene and but also a lot of CG as well.
If they made this practical, I thought the scene would have
probably held a little bit better.
But this was probably the most exciting scene to me was the
river raft scene. But I did not want the family
part of it. I would rather have the team
have to deal with this. Like I said, it's two stories in
this. You're following the family,
(27:11):
you're following the team, and then they collide because they
get saved and then all of a sudden they split up again and
then they come back together andit's just like, why even split
the story that much? It's.
It's also worth noting, like youhave the main characters, you
know, you kind of your, your main four really.
(27:34):
You know, you got Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali,
Jonathan Bailey and Rupert Friend, who's kind of like the
like the benefactor, you know, like the one leading this
mission, you know, comes from representing the, the
organization, right? Like the, the, the, like the
company that's that's funding all this.
So you have them. Then there's a few like
(27:55):
additional people, part of the crew that are never like even
really given names. They're never fleshed out.
And it's clear from the beginning, you're like, this is
fodder for the dinosaurs. And Ed Skrein is in this movie
who if you know that actor, he'sjust always a bad guy.
Like he's just a heavy in every movie.
And I'm like, they like he's clearly not good news and and is
(28:17):
going to die. And then there's actually only
one character in this movie thatI was certain would die and that
I wanted to get eaten by a dinosaur.
Don't say who it is. That's that's our buddy.
No, not the boyfriend. Yes, I'm sorry, as Xavier was
like, you know, they kind of make this guy like, for lack of
(28:41):
better word, a tool bag and which?
Is funny because David's awesome.
I talked to Dave. The actor who plays him is in
Fair St. Prom Prom Queen and I did
interview with him and he's fantastic.
Yeah, his his character is douche his.
Performance is fine. It's the writing of this
character. He is purposefully written to be
(29:02):
like kind of a tool and but likewith the opportunity for
redemption. And he does have some moments
where he like shows heroic qualities, but then immediately
would say something afterwards. I'm like, well, I don't like you
anymore. And so this is the one character
I thought for sure was going to get eaten, that, you know, I
won't spoil what his fate is, but it was.
(29:23):
Not he's like messing with the dad at the same time, I feel
like, I feel like he's just trying to be.
He's like awkwardly funny, but as a douchebag way.
And it's his only way to kind oflike, I don't know, it's his
defense mechanism. I feel like it's kicking it.
Yeah. Again, he's not supposed to be
likable to a lot of people, but he did get a lot of laughs in
the theater, I will say that. OK, mine was pretty quiet but I
was also it wasn't a packed house.
(29:44):
But I don't know, it's just likewhen he's the boyfriend of the
daughter who was brought along on this trip, there's just no
moment where I'm like, why wouldshe be with it?
Like I never saw other than one time where he saves her.
I was like, I don't understand what she sees in this guy.
Yeah. I think that's more of a screen
writing issue than a performanceissue.
(30:05):
Which is weird because I broughtback the guy from the original
Jurassic Park and I don't know and he has made, he has written
great stuff. I just had what he has done.
He also roadblock bag, which I really liked and let me pull
this up. Oh also I wanted to bring up if
you want Jurassic Park, JurassicWorld great stuff and I will
(30:27):
keep telling people on Netflix watch camp Cretaceous and chaos
theory that run adjacent to the Jurassic World movies.
Fully animated, great, great voice cast, lot of Dinos, a lot
of battles, a lot of eating, a lot of adventures.
Like it's actually a really goodsegue away from the films that
feel authentic to the first film, honestly.
(30:51):
And you get more of the insides of the business and like, who's
really bad in this world of Jurassic World and the companies
and what they're doing. But the screenwriter for this
film other than the original Jurassic Park recently wrote
Black Bag wrote the Indiana Jones the Dial Destiny wrote the
screenplay to the Mummy movie did like Jack Ryan screenplay
(31:14):
for angels and demons. I mean, there's a lot that he's
done. He.
Wrote Ghost Town. Tom Cruise Mummy movie that
started and killed the the universe, The Dark Universe,
Yeah. But he also wrote Ghost Town,
wrote Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Zathira.
He did. Where Are the World?
'S and I and I liked Presents, which was the Soderbergh movie
that came out. Panic Room.
(31:35):
I'd like Dial of Destiny, you know, there's a lot of these.
Well, look. Panic, Panic Room.
Stir of echoes. He wrote the first Spider Man
movie. Apparently, too.
He's a writer on that. I mean, come on now.
Like we can't. He wrote the law.
Clearly, I mean wrote the was was a writer on the original
Jurassic Park, like clearly has a great history, but the.
First Mission Impossible film, but it's like this is what we
get. Without some stinkers.
(31:56):
But I mean, after the stinkers we got in in Dominion, Fallen
Kingdom, which I actually like those now, I'm telling you, you,
you kind of ranked George the fact I like those more just
because Rebirth should have donesomething greater and better and
it didn't. It didn't do what it was
supposed to do to bring the franchise back, other than
making what I think I made a lotof money already.
(32:18):
Yeah, I mean, it's it made in itlike its first day over $30
million. This movie set to make, it's
projected to make over $100 million opening weekends like
it's going to do fine. The Jurassic World movies I
have, you know, the Jurassic World, the first one made over a
billion dollars and then I thinkfallen Kingdom and Dominion made
(32:39):
progressively less, but still did pretty well.
I would imagine this one's goingto do really well.
I don't, I don't know if it's going to hit a billion dollars
because I think the mid reviews and and some of the poor word of
mouth might get around, but I don't know, I I've seen some
positive takes on this movie andI I just feel like I'm right in
(32:59):
the middle, right, right, just straight down the middle.
Emmanuel is is asking if we've seen the Jurassic Park Survivor
video game trailer. I think I have says it's based
on the person left on left behind in the first film.
You know, there is that one movie.
What was it called? Like 6 man?
What is it called? The I would like to see a
survival a survival type Jurassic World movie that's more
(33:22):
it leans into the horror and survival of it.
I'm trying to figure out what that dinosaur movie was that
time travelling one with. 65. 65.
Thank you with. Adam Driver with Adam Driver
yes, which I love. Adam Driver 65 is actually a
decent watch. It is stuff that Jurassic World
part can take off just on the survival side of things and
(33:44):
really hitting human against dinosaurs especially surviving
it. And I thought this film, there
was not much high stakes, not really much real danger, and I
felt like everyone was a superhero, it feels like,
because they all outrun every single crazy dinosaur that are
mutated and super genetic or whatever you want to call them.
(34:05):
And yeah, that's what I'll just say on that.
I mean, I always loved this franchise since the first one,
but I'm just getting a little exhausted of the failure.
You can see some of my Jurassic Park stuff behind me too.
You know, I haven't got that popcorn bucket, which was
interesting. It's actually a popcorn bucket
and drink holder. It's.
Just clear, like we don't need another one fast track just to
(34:28):
make money. Like we do need somebody to come
in with a good idea. Like dinosaurs are always going
to get me in the door, you know,in premise.
And I have enough love for the Jurassic Park movie, for the
original that I will punish myself by seeing bad Jurassic
World movies as long as they putthem out.
But as soon as there's a hidden gem, you know, or or not, not
(34:53):
even a hidden, just a gem amongst them, I'll be like, I
never gave up on you, you know? But as of right now, it is
tough. This this is again some cool
sequences, but just kind of likestitched together with some poor
(35:14):
characters, you know? And all the dinosaurs are CG and
it's like it is a big summer blockbuster, but it just leaves
you not feeling anything. And that's too bad considering
how much I feel still to this day when I rewatch the.
Original well, a good thing is too.
We have a lot to look forward tothis month.
Next week we're going to talk Superman the following week, I
(35:35):
think, or whatever week it is for Fantastic Four and I'm.
Feeling hyped I. Feel good and then I'm pretty
sure you and I I mean I hope you're there, but I know what
you did like last summer. Hopefully we can talk about that
and I'll have cast interviews actually this Monday to drop for
I know what you did last summer. So there's a lot to talk about
(35:56):
so I'm glad we got this one out of the way so far for me, F1 is
the movie of the year until we hit these other big movies
coming out. Hopefully drew also gives F1
another chance because pretty pretty awesome but you said you
already got the need for speed. So I think Centers for.
Me is probably still kind of themovie of the year, but F1 for
sure is like if you're going to go see a movie on the big screen
(36:18):
this year, like go see this justbecause the theatrical
experience is worth it. I do have a question about your
screening, Sean, because I know that you went to the early press
screening for Jurassic World Rebirth.
Yeah. Did you get, did they show
during that screening, the teaser trailer for Christopher
Nolan's The Odyssey before? The film.
(36:39):
You already know that answer. We don't get any teasers or
trailers before these screenings.
So I know you typically don't, but because.
So you did, did you? I did.
I did. OK, so why are you been asking
me? You should have told me so we
could have talked about in the beginning.
Because I'm excited now. All right, tell me.
Tell me about the this trailer trailer for the Odyssey.
I mean, I mean, I don't have it like memorized.
I got to see it once. Apparently it did leak out
(37:02):
within the past day or two. I didn't watch the leak.
I saw it. Here's the thing that was
interesting about it. I forgot that that trailer was
supposed to be like if you see this movie in Dolby or whatever.
I don't know if it's like only for certain screenings or not,
but I had heard it was attached to this movie.
I, I saw this in the theater. It did the trailers like
everything. And then it did like the Dolby
(37:24):
opening and the lights dimmed like the movie was starting.
And then the trailer screen cameup again.
I was like, oh, there's another trailer.
And then I saw the syncope logo for Nolan.
I was like, oh, shoot, I'm getting that to see teaser.
So like, I was immediately excited.
There's voice over from a few different characters that you
can't see. There's like beaches and the
Trojan Horse and stuff like thatis all really cool.
(37:46):
And then you do get to see Tom Holland having a conversation
with a bald, bearded John Bernthal who just looked
awesome. Like looked so cool.
What's his dialect like? What's what's their normal?
Speaking in normal John Bernthalvoice and Tom Holland was
speaking with his like native British accent.
(38:07):
A lighter version of it, I'd say, but it was there.
Tom Holland, I believe, plays the son of Odysseus.
I don't I don't know the character names at the top of my
head in this. So you briefly see him.
You do see Matt Damon's Odysseusmarching from the back.
But then you it like kind of theend of the teaser.
You see him like on a raft in the middle of the ocean looking
(38:28):
pretty wrecked. So you just, I mean, it's like
some brief glimpses, but boy, I mean, it looked amazing.
Yeah. It's all shot on all IMAX
cameras on film, Just the grit and everything.
It looked like it got me hyped. It got me hyped.
Up. It looked like cinema to you.
That is cinema. It sure did and in that movie
(38:50):
comes out a year from now like it's I believe it's this
weekend. You know your and.
Then followed by Spider man. Oh, what's the new title called?
Oh, is it brand new day is. It brand new day.
Sorry. I think they come like almost
the same month, don't they? Yeah, I believe that's.
Right. So it's like it's the summer of
(39:11):
Tom Holland. Yep.
And do you see? The rumors of the conversation
for Bond, there's no way that. Happened.
Oh, that's not happening. That is not happening at all.
No, sorry, guys. I mean, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong,
but sorry guys, that our spider man is not the next, next Bond
for many reasons. And honestly, he is small.
(39:35):
That's a fact. I'm not, that's nothing against
him, but he's not the James Bondstature that they're looking
for. So I don't know why they keep
reporting all that stuff and they no.
Manual. It won't be Timothy Chamay.
He's. That's what he's saying.
No, that ain't happened. No, but I'm excited for next
(39:56):
summer as well. But this summer is also going to
be a hit. So I can't wait to to dive into
that as as we continue on. But that's going to do it for
our episode of the Moviegoers Society talking Jurassic World
Rebirth. It didn't really do it for us,
more for Drew than for me, but hey, I still hope you go check
it out this weekend. Yeah, yeah, like your review, I
think you you're, you know, not to not to beat you to the punch,
(40:18):
but I believe your, your verdictwas a two 2 1/2 stars out of
five. I'm probably at like a three.
So I'm like 1/2 star above you, but yeah.
Yeah, that's where I land on that one.
But yeah, if you did end up watching it, hit us up.
Let us know your thoughts. I know it's been all over the
place, but thanks again for listening to another episode of
the movie Gear Society. We'll be back soon for more hot
(40:41):
takes, more reviews. Once again, I'm Sean Todsworth,
the mayor of Nurtropolis. Andrew.
I'm Truman has the professional media movie mastermind.
And we'll see you at the movie.
