Speaker 1 (00:45):
Good evening everyone, Welcome to the New Heights Show on Education.
My name is Manya Shukla and you are with me
on the another episode of Empowering HR within the Workforce,
your go to podcast for the ever evolving word of HR.
This podcast is the way of sharing insights on building
(01:05):
a more effective and efficient workforce while also focusing on
your personal growth. If you tune into our previous episode,
thank you so much for your support. We talked about
mistakes that HR professional do. If you missed it, be
(01:26):
sure to check it out. My dear listeners, let me
begin today's episode by asking you a question. How do
you spend your free time? Like the time when you
have nothing to do or when you want to do
what you what you love and I call that time
(01:48):
as my me time, So like, how do you spend
that time? Like some of you might enjoy singing, some
of you might enjoy dancing, playing struments or even embroidering.
But in this digital age, I have noticed something and
(02:08):
this is just my personal observation, that we often end
up spending more time glued to our phones endlessly scrolling
and actually doing the thing endlessly scrolling and just just scrolling.
Then actually doing the things that we truly love, and
(02:32):
hours pass by and we hardly realize where the time
has gone. So why not give ourselves a little break
from the screen, from the phone screen. And personally, I
like to spend my me time reading books. It has
(02:53):
become my bedtime ritual. I read a few pages before
going to sleep, and I especially enjoy fiction. And right
now I'm reading a beautiful book called This Stationery Shot
by Mrlin Coamily. And today I'm going to talk about
the same like I'm going to talk now, I'm not
going to talk about the book this Thistory Shop. I'm
(03:15):
going to talk about the reading as a habit because
many of my friends admire this habit and say that
they also wish they could start reading too. But their
most common excuse is like I don't have time, I
don't know how to keep a pace, and I don't
know how to finish or just keep my interest in
(03:39):
so many lengthy books and in so many lendy books.
So in today's episode, I will be sharing how you
can make reading a wonderful daily habit and how it
can positively transform your life. And before I start, I
just wanted to mention that all websites which helped me
(04:05):
from where I gained insights for this episode. I have
listed them in that description and you can also check
check these websites. So let's start with why reading is
important for you. Number one, stress relief. So when you're reading,
(04:28):
you are inside the writer's world, creating your own visuals
for each scenario, like you are totally emerged in that world,
which can take you away from your current issues and
problems for a time being. For me, reading is the
best way to stay connected with my goals and not
(04:50):
thinking about anything which is not fruitful to me. It
helps me keeping me away from gossips, negativity, and it
helps me to learn some thing positives from the character
that I read in their stories. The second one I
have is gaining insights. So when you are reading a book,
(05:13):
there are so many stories through which you can really
you can relate, you can relate to, but you will
also come across some stories where you will think like okay,
this also happens in the same world where you are
living in. Reading increases your knowledge about culture, perspective, and
(05:36):
emotional intelligence. The third point I have here is it
minimizes loneliness. So reading is a solitary activity. But when
you are reading again, you are in writer's word, You
are with characters, you are with their life, so you
(05:58):
are engaged some way, and this will help you to
This will help you to decrease your loneliness. The fourth
point I have here is better sleep. There are very
good reasons to mention like why reading before bed is
good for your sleeping habits. The main reason is the
(06:21):
decrease in stress, anxiety, and muscular tension, and reading helps
you to relax before sleep by taking away all those
anxious thoughts that can and this process, like this thing,
can really help you to sleep peacefully. The next I
(06:43):
have here is develops imagination and creativity. So personally I
find reading books better than watching movies. Nothing could be
better than having a quiet background and every imagination, the character,
the environment, the emotion, everything is in your brain, and
(07:05):
all this together gives you gives a good development to
your creativity and imagination improves vocabulary. It's a very common
real It's a reason that I think everyone everyone knows
that with reading books you come across so many new words,
(07:26):
which helps you to build a strong vocabulary, and sometimes
it also introduces you to the world to the like
to the vocabulary of different nations and regions as well.
Next one I have is reading improves relationship. So with
reading you tend to increase empathy. Like I earlier stated
(07:49):
that it is helpful in developing emotional intelligence, so like
it is helpful in improving the relationships. Studies have proven
link between reading literary fiction and increased and an increased
availability to understand emotions and thoughts of other better social
(08:13):
skills and relating to others whose life are different from ours.
So the brain doesn't distinguish reading about an experience and
living it. The same reasons are activated reading literally fiction
produces a simulation of reality which allows us to experience
(08:38):
the emotions and thoughts of characters. In this regard, literally fiction,
like literary fiction, acts as a bridge to better understand
and to better understand other people and point of view
and their point of view that are vastly different from ours.
(09:00):
The next point I have here is reading promotes wellness.
In twenty sixteen, study published in Social Science and Medicine
Journal found that reading for at least thirty minutes a
day extended the lifespan of participants by an average two years.
With book readers who read more than three hours every
(09:22):
week at an advantage over their peers who read magazine
and newspaper. The next point I have here is reading
helps to combat dementia and Alzheimer's. Research shows that elderly
patients who read book or play mentally challenging games are
(09:44):
two and a half times less likely to develop Alzheimer's.
Reading is also associated with lower risk of developing dementia.
The study found that it didn't matter how people begin
reading or other mentally engaging activity early or late in life.
There was there was a slower rate of decline either way,
(10:09):
so it is never too late to pick up a book.
The last point I have here is reading inspires success.
Many historical leaders were known to be avid readers, and
some of the most successful business leaders have associated reading
with their career success. Again, I study of the words
(10:33):
wealthiest people found that the only trait in common was
the fact that they read. So these are all the like,
these are all the ten reasons on why reading reading
is important. And now now you have now you know
(10:54):
why why reading is important. So before we move to
our next next segment of of letting you know how
to develop reading as a habit. Let's take a quick
break and we will be back soon.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
Welcome back listeners. So now we are prior to the break,
we discussed about why reading is good for us, and
now we are going to discuss about how we can
we can generate a habit of reading books. So to
start with, start like take trips to the library, like
(12:31):
I used to go with my baby when I think
he was he was an year old for some story time,
and gradually I just got some some of the books
that that I was really interested in, and I thought
to read them, and that's how things started. And I
(12:52):
also got a few recommendations from other other readers as well.
The second is that identify your area of interest. Identify
your genre, like whether you like fiction, non fiction, or poetry.
Like in fiction we have several categories like horror, mystery,
sci fi, romance, short stories, historical fiction, or literary fiction.
(13:18):
In the same way in the non fiction we have autobiographies, biographies, science,
self help, spirituality, health, history, and memoir. Well, I like
fiction books because they are full of emotions, and I
(13:40):
like historical fiction as well. To like to identify the
area of interest, you can simplify few reads of different genres,
and it is not necessary to read a huge like
lengthy books. You can you can start reading from like
short like short stories. The third point I have here
(14:03):
is set a time and read regularly at that time.
So I read my books when I'm going to take
a nap in the morning or not not in the
morning afternoon, and when I'm going to sleep at night.
I also carry a book with me whenever I'm going out,
like for anything, for an appointment, for any gathering, I
(14:26):
carry a book. The fourth is start with some short
books or if the book is lengthy, make a goal
to read at least one page or one chapter daily. Uh.
And this will help you to make your goal smarter
but achievable. UH. This way, you won't feel stressed out
(14:48):
or pressurized or you know, just you you will, you will,
you will enjoy your reading time. The fifth one I
have is try different for you can try audio books
or ebooks or paperback whatever suits you. Just try. I
(15:09):
like paperback format for my reading. And one of the
reasons I like paperback format is because I can try
different different designer bookmarks, Like there are so many beautiful
books bookmarks that you can find online, so I like
collecting bookmarks. So that is why I like paperback paperback.
(15:32):
But this is like one of the reasons I like
paperback formats. So yeah, you can just try the format
that suits you the best. The sixth one is talk
about books with your friends. So talking about books with
your friends will definitely give you some help. They can
give you some of the very good recommendation and maybe
(15:55):
you will find one of your friends and a good reader.
The seventh one is keep your phone aside. So while
and this is very important point while reading a book,
just simply keep your phone aside to avoid any distractions.
(16:17):
You will really enjoy reading once you are immersed in
the story. Don't read just to show others or just
to just to tell others that, oh, okay, I read books.
Just if if you are reading, just give your one
hundred person in that process as well. I'm not saying
(16:39):
to totally avoid phone. Avoid phones or you can take
important calls. You can take, you can do if there
is something important or urgent, but if you have donated
a time for reading, just just better to avoid any distraction.
So because reading, like I told you, like I said earlier, reading,
(17:05):
you will enjoy reading once you are fully immersed in
the story, whether the ending is sad or happy. The
feeling of getting attached to the story, to the character
is something which can't be defined in words. I still
remember when I read a book and I was I
was doing my I think I was doing my BBA
(17:30):
and I read a book called A Thousand Splendid Sons
by Khalid Husseini, and I got so attached to this
story that I cried for like two days thinking thinking
of the story. Uh. And like some stories, they just
move your move your heart and soul. So if you
like my point is my point here is if you
(17:52):
really want to enjoy this story, try to try to
avoid traction while reading the story. The last point I
have is set a goal. So set a goal, like
which books are you going to read this year or
this month or this week? So for me, there are
(18:15):
still four books left that I want to read by
the end of the year. Number one is like Kite Runner,
two is and the Mountain Ecode, three Spallas of Illusion,
and the four or fourth one is The Henna Artists.
So these are my These are my books which are
still in my bucket list, and I want to read
(18:38):
all of them by the end of this year. And
you should also. You can also start setting up your
like setting your favorite books, your favorite genre. You can
also go along and like this and just start making
your goals. So this was all about today's podcast. I
(19:01):
hope that it truly helped and I hope that it
helped you out to understand the importance of reading in
your life. I hope you enjoyed today's episode and thank
you so much for tuning in, have a good weekend.
(19:28):
