(00:00):
Hello, fellow newbies.
(00:15):
My name is Adam Emberton and I am your noob or your host or whatever
it is you want to call me.
This is the first episode of this podcast, noob.ai.
I started this podcast because as I was getting into AI myself, I did really
what I always do when I get into any new projects or new hobbies.
(00:37):
And that was that I went out to streaming platforms or YouTube, and I looked for
information in podcasts or in videos, and I found a ton of information out there.
Now I don't want to downplay that at all.
I found a ton of information and it was all great information.
The tough part for me though, was that a lot of that information went over my head.
(01:00):
It was much further down the road than I was in my AI journey.
And I just didn't quite understand it.
So it was really hard for me to retain that information.
It was information that I will probably, or at least hopefully understand
someday, but that day is not today.
And I know a lot of people feel the same way.
(01:21):
Welcome to noob.ai, a podcast about a newbies AI journey that will walk
you through as you start your AI journey.
To start this off, I think we really need to start at the beginning, right?
We need to start with the basics.
Noob.ai, we're new to this.
We really need to go from the very beginning.
And I think the good place to start is really by talking about the term AI
(01:42):
or artificial intelligence.
A lot of people, when they think AI is a new thing, they're not going to
think of AI as a new thing.
They're going to think AI is a new thing.
They're going to think AI is a new thing.
A lot of people, when they think of artificial intelligence, they think
AI or artificial intelligence, aren't those the robots that
(02:03):
take over the world in the movies?
Yes, typically the movies that have AI in it, those are robots
that are taking over the world.
But think about this.
We also have movies with cars that travel to the future.
We have movies where there's wars going on in a different galaxy, in a galaxy
that's for legal purposes, a significant distance away.
(02:27):
And none of those things have happened.
At least not that we know of yet.
Now I mentioned these because these are my favorite types of movies.
So of course they're at the top of my head, but that's just it.
They're just movies.
After people get past that thought, their first real thought about AI is
(02:48):
Alexa or Siri or chat GPT or Google Gemini and so on.
I'm not quite sure how to help you with that.
As my AI starts talking to me.
Yes, these are types of AI that are out there, but they're just small
examples under the giant umbrella that is AI.
(03:08):
On IBM's website, they define AI as technology that enables computers
and machines to simulate human learning, comprehension, problem solving,
decision making, creativity and autonomy.
I think the part of that that really scares people is the
simulate human learning piece of it.
(03:30):
The other things that are listed after it, those all kind of fall under that.
But the simulate human learning is the part that really makes people think about it.
But I can tell you this as great as AI works, as smart as AI is, there is still
a huge human aspect to it.
So something to keep in mind as we talk about it, a question that I hear a lot
(03:52):
of times, and this, this may be a more realistic question, especially now as
we get into having more of a real world, but I think that's a good point.
Question, especially now as we get into having more access to AI, having
programs out there that are, that use AI.
And that question is, is AI going to take over my job?
(04:16):
Whenever I hear people ask this question, I give them the same quote.
And it's a quote that I absolutely love.
If you know me, you've probably heard me say this quote before, but I'm going
to share it with you today, or again, if you've heard it before, I'm going to say
it again, AI will not replace a human, but a human with AI will replace a human.
(04:41):
Take some time and think about that quote.
What that tells me is that we really don't need to fear AI taking over our jobs,
but we probably need to think a little bit more about AI or look
a little bit more into it.
I can tell you if I was up for a promotion or a job and they asked me,
what separates you from other people applying for this position?
(05:05):
I am not going to be afraid to let them know that I use those tools available
to me, such as chat GPT or Google Gemini to help me finish tasks quicker.
This is going to be an efficiency gain.
And I can tell you that supervisors love efficiency.
Gains.
So why is it an efficiency game?
(05:26):
Well, the reason why is because I'm taking on these tasks and I'm doing
it a lot quicker with the help of AI.
I'm brainstorming ideas with it.
I'm looking at trends from maybe similar projects that worked in the
past, building ideas off of that.
Or I'm looking at trends from projects similar in the past that failed to
(05:47):
make sure I don't go down that same route.
And I'm again, I'm doing this in such a quick matter.
It's not taking up a lot of my time.
It's not taking up a lot of my colleagues time.
So yes, it is an efficiency game.
Sometimes people may go, well, if I hit a roadblock, maybe I'll just get up and
walk around for a bit and it'll come to me.
(06:08):
Or sometimes I just have to go home and sleep on it.
And the next day it's there.
They're at the forefront of my mind.
That's great.
And I will say, if I hit a roadblock, I do the same thing.
I will get up and I'll walk around.
It helps refresh the mind.
But sometimes if I don't have the time for that, I will use a chat GPT and
(06:29):
build some ideas off of that.
Now is AI doing the work for me?
Absolutely not.
But it's helping me get through that mental roadblock that I'm running into.
Cause again, I'm brainstorming with it.
Now don't take this as me saying that if you use AI, it's definitely going
to land you that promotion or it's definitely going to get you that job.
(06:50):
It's not what I'm saying at all, but it is a great tool to help you in
really whatever path you decide to take.
If talking through this, you still have a fear of AI.
Let me give you a quick history lesson to kind of help with that fear.
The term artificial intelligence is a tool that helps you get through
the most difficult things in your life.
(07:13):
The term artificial intelligence was first coined in the 1950s, but the
first mathematical model of a neural network was created in 1943.
1943, which means the thought of this or a model of this is really nothing new.
It's been around for more than 80 years.
(07:34):
Now to keep going with the history lesson, there was a short break in the
1980s, which was a great year, but then it picked back up in the 80s and
really kept progressing from there.
Part of this history lesson isn't even about AI, but about other technologies
that came along in history that scared people when they were first coming about.
(07:55):
The first one is computers.
We all know computers.
We all have computers, right?
So here's a quote from Ken Olson, who was the founder of
digital equipment corporation in 1977.
This quote was made at a time when computers were really
looked at as industrial tools.
Olson said, there's no reason anyone would want a computer in a home.
(08:18):
Now Olson did later clarify that he was referring to centralized
home automation and not personal computers.
But again, they were looked at as industrial tools.
They weren't even in every office building yet.
They are maybe down the hall in one room and maybe it took up half the room.
So they weren't out there.
Another quote, and this one's about the internet, came from Robert Metcalf,
(08:40):
who is the inventor of ethernet back in 1995.
Now, let me tell you, when I first heard this quote, I was so shocked that this
came from the inventor of ethernet, but that's who it was.
Metcalf said the internet will collapse.
Now, a lot of times, if there's something that you do have a fear of, that is
something that you may be downplay.
(09:01):
Maybe you'll have a quote like this, like the internet will collapse just to maybe
lessen the fear of it, to bring that down a little bit, to help reassure yourself
of that.
And that's where I think he was maybe going with that quote.
Now I will say that Metcalf did end up eating his words and I don't just mean
metaphorically, we all know he metaphorically ate his words.
(09:21):
The internet's huge.
It's everywhere, but he literally ate his words as well as he took that printed
report, blended it up into a drink and ended up eating it or drinking it,
whatever it was.
The reason why I bring up these quotes is because this all sounds very familiar
to what we hear about AI today.
Could you imagine your home life today without a computer or the internet?
(09:46):
Could you think of your work life without a computer or the internet?
I know many places would not function without computers or internet.
So again, go back to those times when there was, those were coming along.
People were scared of them and just think with what we know today.
And it sounds crazy, right?
Not having those in our life.
Okay.
So history lesson over.
(10:07):
Hopefully you're still awake.
If not, I hope you have wonderful dreams.
And I really hope you weren't listening to this while you're driving.
This is how I think we should think about AI.
It is the future.
Really.
It's the now it will be a necessary tool.
And I do believe that someday we will be sitting here thinking, how did I ever
(10:29):
get through life without this tool?
If you're listening to this podcast, that means you're already in the right mindset.
Now, again, this is the first episode, so I'm not saying that this is the best
podcast ever.
I'm giving it high praises right off the bat.
The host is wonderful.
I'm not saying anything like that, but what I'm saying is that you're here.
Looking for your start, and I just hope that I can help you with that start.
(10:53):
In future episodes, we are going to be looking at different tools that are
available out there to us and the tools that may be available in the future.
We'll look at some that are maybe rumored and really just kind of decipher
if those rumors are true or if that's just false news that's out there and try
to look at the ones that are going to be coming out and take a deeper dive into
those.
(11:14):
This will probably be the last episode that I'm going to be talking about.
This will probably be the last episode that I give you a history lesson, but
don't hold me to that because I think that that is an important part of this
journey and that's exactly what it is.
It's a journey.
You've heard me say that word multiple times during this podcast.
I do want to say thank you for listening.
