Gunfire in Midtown: A Prayer for Manhattan

Good morning, everyone. This just in…

A tragic shooting took place just hours ago in a Manhattan office building on Park Avenue. A Las Vegas gunman armed with an M4 rifle opened fire inside, killing five people, including an NYPD police officer. The attack prompted a swift law enforcement response, and the suspect also among the dead, from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot to his chest.

The NYPD and FBI are actively investigating the scene. Two additional individuals were wounded—one remains in critical condition, while the other has non-life-threatening injuries. Mayor Eric Adams has urged locals to stay indoors as the area remains secured. Despite the chaos, officials confirm there is no ongoing threat to the public.

So Let’s pray.

Dear Lord,

We come before You, after learning of the violence that has shaken Midtown, Manhattan this evening. We lift up the lives lost in this tragic shooting, one of them an NYPD officer sworn to protect others, who leaves behind two young boys and a pregnant wife. Lord, be with her, as she now has to navigate being a widow and a single mom. Surround her with helpful people, a community to walk beside her. 

Surround the families of all the victims with Your comfort and peace that surpasses understanding. Be near to the wounded—bring swift healing to bodies, minds, and hearts. Strengthen the first responders, investigators, and city officials as they deal with the aftermath of all this.

Jesus, Prince of Peace, we ask that You shine light into this darkness. May your Holy Spirit be the promised Comforter and people’s distress, and your Church a refuge in the storm.

In Your name, Jesus.
