KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson joins Next Up following the NFL 53-man roster deadline. The Houston Texans cut down their training camp roster. The players most notable to be released/waived include Ben Skowronek, C.J. Henderson, Desmond King II, Andrew Beck, Noah Brown and Tim Boyle. "It was a tough roster to make," Wilson said. The Texans now have five running backs on the roster, and veteran wide receiver Robert Woods remains on the team. However, the deadline does not determine the final 53-man roster. The Texans will "make some changes" before their week 1 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. General manager Nick Caserio will look to add depth to the defensive line, especially at "defensive tackle."

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Rosster cut down day. You did an excellent job, not
just with the tax sans, but with the rest of
the league as well. At Aaron Wilson underscore NFL. What
stood out to you the most?

Speaker 2 (00:08):
You know, they kept a lot of running backs and
wide receivers. I think that was the most interesting cutting
Noah Brown ultimately just a product of him continuing to
have shoulder issues not being available. Availability is a big deal,
and there are other receivers that are practicing and playing
every day and producing. He's a very tough player, you know,

(00:29):
had a lot of production, but he does get dinged
a lot. I mean, among the injuries, he had a
torn labor him to end last season. He had a
situation with his shoulder, a new one this preseason, and
he had a transferse process fracture in his back last
year and among other injuries. So just someone consistently gets dinged.
So that was why that happened. And then you look

(00:51):
at the wide receiver room it's seven. Now is it
going to stay that way? You know, are they going
to make more moves? I think, like Nick and Serrus
sad it pretty well this morning. The fifty three May
roster right now is the initial one kind of written
in pencil, and they'll make some changes. They'll look for
it the line depth, they'll look at a few things.

(01:11):
Practice squad of course, will be today. I don't know
they'll be a big team on waivers or not. But
they're not ranking real high in the priority order. Panthers
are first. So yeah, I thought it was a good
cut day. Unfortunately, they have a couple of guys that
can't play right now, like Christian Harris Key guys. Christian
is still sideline with the cast. They did a short
term into reserve. Probably the best thing for him for

(01:32):
the long length of the season, but you know, tough
to not have him for the whole first month, Aaron.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
With keeping British Brooks, it just it's screaming to me
like they didn't want to They didn't want to risk
cutting this guy, trying to stash him on the practice
squad and somebody make cup and grab him. But in
cutting both full backs, I mean, is this legitimate? You
think they will utilize British Brooks as as the primary fullback,
mixed in with maybe Stover and you know some of

(02:00):
the tight ends is kind of the h back role
or what's the thought process there.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
They're gonna look at him and see if they feel
like he can be, you know, a lead blocker. I
think it's going to be a collective, not just one guy.
Like those guys you mentioned Bill all play some football
and you know, be out there blocking for Joe Mixon,
and I think that they need everybody. But they've done
that before and it wasn't like Beck was an old school,

(02:27):
like bad breath stop fullback. He was the pass catcher,
he was able to do some things. He ran back
a kickoff. So is he got dissimilar from these taller
tight end guys that also have some pop and can
position block and move a few guys out of the
way and maybe peel off and get it get someone else.
And Brevin George is a very athletic guy cable blocking

(02:48):
more than one guy in the open field. I think
it's you know, it's gonna work, but time's gonna tell.
I mean, Andrew was a very experienced fullback, but he
just it's like Noah wasn't available. I mean, he's been
out with his cast the whole month. He practiced just
a couple of times before he hurt his calf again,

(03:08):
and he was out talk with.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Aaron Wilson our Texans inside of here at seven ninety
just a couple more minutes. He's live at practice right now,
first practice of the fifty three. Continuing to look at
the defense, I don't think there are any surprises at
that linebacker spot. They kind of have what they have.
Maybe Jamal Hill, the rookie sixth round pick making the
team might catch some people's eye, but really in that secondary,

(03:34):
there were some folks that wonder if indeed Jeff Okuda,
he's been banged up a lot this camp. Miles Brian
is someone else that has been thought to be on
the chopping block. And then there's Chris Boyd, a special teamer.
Many people feel like he had a solid camp. Your
thoughts just on the back end of that defense.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
If you will, You know, they had to make a
decision on Desmond King and Miles Bryant, and Miles is
a lot more consistent and dead muff the punt Miles
off played for the Patriots as possible Dead could be
back for practice squad, but no firm.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Commitment on that if that's gonna happen yet. But I
think they had to make a decision on health like CJ.
Henderson had an ankle that you know, some inconsistencies in practice,
and you know Kuda is when they have a bigger
investment in He's also this is his first practice back,
so hopefully his hip is fully healed and he can

(04:30):
stay out there and be the third corner like the
Shaq Griffin ball from last year, and you know, normally
that guy doesn't play much. They just keep the corners,
the outside corners in the field the whole time if
they're healthy. With Tamara Lasher and during Singly Junior. I
look at the secondary and you know, I don't think
it was a ton of surprises. I thought there were
gonna be a few more for Frank Ross's special teams.

(04:51):
Lonnie Johnson Junior is someone that's good on special teams.
But ultimately, you know, you look at the moves and
I thought it was fairly logical. In the secondary linebacker.
You know, Jamal Hill's a talented guy. He would have
gotten claimed by someone else. He runs a four to
four to one. He's a pretty good developmental prospect and
someone that they want to keep working with. I don't

(05:12):
know how much help play right away, but I think
they've got, you know, you kind of have a balance
between big picture development and just trying to feel the
competitive team. There was some other spots, you know, I
thought wide receiver was probably the most interesting where you know,
Robert Woods at one point we were talking about his contract.

(05:33):
When that was they decided, you know, just to carry
the money and that they could afford it. They have
enough cap space to do that, so they did and
gives them some quality depth, kind of a mentor type.
But I look at the whole roster and it was
a tough roster to make, you know, lots tougher than
last year. And I think the decisions took longer because

(05:54):
they had more to consider and you know, a lot
of strategy involved. But I think they did the best
they could with trying to cut these guys and make
some decisions and have a kind of a balancing act.
I kind of wonder if one of the reasons they
didn't have more pure special teamers like a Mike Ford
who are signed here to do that now he's going
to the Browns practice squad was because the kickoff doesn't

(06:18):
look like he's going to be as relevant a play now.
And I think a lot of people are going to
kick it out of the end zone. So do you
necessarily have to have you know, a stud on every
position when you're talking about the kickoff and the punt team?
Maybe not.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Interesting. So we know you got to get back to it, Gordon,
unless you have something quick for Aaron, Guys, really quick, Aaron,
is there?

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Do you think there's any position they want to with
all these guys hitting.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
The waiver wire?

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Like, is there a guy there a position they still
want to grab somebody? Or you think this is kind
of it?

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Nick said today after the podium session ended that defensive
line is somewhere where the depth that they have might
be coming from somewhere else. So that's the possibility that
they would look at that. I mentioned special team Zeke
Turner is someone that's under consideration. He has a lot
of options from teams for special teams, but maybe for

(07:11):
the practice squad. But yeah, I could see him looking
for a defensive tackle in particular.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
All right, Eric, we'll let you go on that one.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Brother.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
We appreciate your working over there, and the roster is
not done. Initial fifty three is out. We'll continue refreshing
your account on social media at Aaron Wilson underscore NFL.
We appreciate it, Bubba, We'll catch on the side.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
Thanks KTS, great to though always
