Speaker 1 (00:02):
Now what's next next time, next time? The next step
was taking next step.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Next time, next stop, next next time. This is next
time with stand Northfleet and Chris Gordy.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Let's see what Philip Good Philip Great on a football Friday,
last Friday of the month of August. Football season is
upon us raise the Good Lord's College action last night.
No NFL this week. When we returned from the Labor
Day weekend, how we it would be preparation for a
(00:42):
week one could stay in Northfleet here, good morning, welcome
in to next up for the next two hours. Lying
from the Sports Talk seven ninety studios Nelton in between
Uptown Park and River Oakes. I'm at stand Sportsman to
my left in for Chris Gordon Gordy's following LSU where
at the in Vegas versus than California this weekend, also
representing the Tyus from Beton Rouge. That's Dan Matthews. You
(01:05):
hear him producing the A team in the afternoons weekdays
three to six around these parts.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
And I think half of our office is probably in
Vegas too. You step out there, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Not enough going down, but I appreciate you as well
as there's Trey Walker he is in for one Connor
de McGovern who's somewhere doing something. Who knows what the
hell he just started to hear, like, yeah, we've built
up any damn vacation. Is what do we do? Joe
Missouri beat the doors off somebody last night, so he's
probably feeling good pound in his chest about his Missouri Tigers.
(01:38):
We will talk a lot of college football, including Barrett
Sale will be dropping by with us. That's a very
prominent name in the college football landscape. Who's he with now?
I know a lot of people changing changing chairs. I'm
sorry to put you on the spot. Dan Occomber, he
used to be with CBS.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Yeah, he was with CBS.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Now he's got his own show, college Football Smothered and Covered.
Good stuff there also right for OutKick and is also serious.
XM College does a show with Tom Logan Ball.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Oh yeah, Louis does a great job as well. So
we'll get into Dion Sanders and the Colorado Buffalo.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
I think per the conversation that obviously we were having
off air with Sean and Brian and Tripoli as they
were walking out the door, We're gonna go, just like
you know, all hat on a hat you know.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Why Banana, uh, you know, Tampa two.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
You know, that's that's absolutely what we're gonna do, you know,
I mean because callers like John out there, That's that's
what they want, you know, they they want, you know,
for us to get into the deep minutia of football. Now,
we're gonna talk some good college football there for sure.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
We'll also talk NFL. There are some things as it
pertains to the Texans. I was on location last night
at n RG for the annual season premiere, hosted by
Cal and Hannah McNair. Everybody was there with the organization
of course, uh Demico, Nick Casario, Greg, Grissa and everybody
was there. The wives are looking. We had a good time,
(03:01):
little gambling going on. Some people were hitting the soda
pops pretty hard, not yours truly. Nonetheless, we'll be able
to talk through that little bit. Up on the seven
ninety account posted some stuff from that event. We'll talk
some more about that. Let us not bury the lead
any longer. However, around here last night exclusively belonged to
the Houston Astros in the city as the Astros begin
(03:23):
a series versus the Kansas City Royals over at Minute
May Park, Trey. Let's cueue up this Astros audio. I'd
like to get this thing rolling. Let's do a scene, said,
shall we Astros get a dub? If you did not
know that, Dann Matthews, which I know you did, why
can I not see the score? Sixty three? What's the
score at Minute May Park? Last night, Astros gain a
(03:44):
half game on Seattle that is now up to a
four game lead in the Al West. Seattle did not play, obviously,
Astros did a lot of people to brag on. Just
an overall thought from you before we get started with
the game highlights.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Then, yeah, I mean, look, you know I appreciate the
resolve at the end, right, I mean, I think you know,
more often than not, we've heard it after losses. Joe
a spot of talking about how hard these guys fight,
and people are like, I don't give a damn how
hard they fought. They lost the game, But look, you
got the best of both worlds last nights. I mean,
you know, a lot of times you've fallen behind the
seventh inning, it hasn't gone your way, and you know
you get the walk heard around the world.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
And I've never.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Seen a walk celebrated like Zach Decenzo celebrated that basically
last night. Yeah, and then of course Doobie coming through again.
I mean, where would this team be without Doobie? Four
runs right there in the eighth and you're able to
pull off the wind. We were feeling a certain way
after that seventh inning, though I know I was.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
It was definitely unattractive baseball. And we will discuss what
all that was about. Let's get this thing going, and
we'll start with a guy, a name that I did
not think we would get into today's show going into
yesterday's game. It's the bottom of the fifth, zero zero
and a certain acquisition we know, Chaz get sent down,
(04:56):
Jason Heywork gets signed, so they exchange outfielders. The in
Jason Hayward, and he did not disappoint. Bottom of the fifth,
Ja hay Welcome to Houston.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
The two old rounded fair down the first base line.
It headed toward the corner. Payna scores single tip Terek
around third. He will score Hayward whether two run, double
tune it up the Astros.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Welcome to Houston.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
Jason Hayward knocks inting the first two runs for the
Astros today on his first game as an Astro.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
What a swing, Jason Heywood. So it was rumored for
a few days. Finally happens. Were you surprised, Dan? I
kind of once to see him out in right field,
so soon I thought I thought maybe they would work
him in veteran, been there, done that, a lot of
big games, won a lot of games. So I guess
(05:53):
it didn't surprise you. No.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
I mean you just answered your question right there at
the end. I mean, you've got a guy that's got
a World Series ring with the Cubs and has been
playing now for god almost fifteen years I think at
the major league level. So you get somebody like that,
and you know you're seeing teams right now. I know
that the Rangers quite a few others yesterday putting some
guys on waivers, and you know, you're starting to see
(06:15):
now kind of teams that they know that they're well
out of it and it's just not going to happen.
So some guys that can maybe get a chance somewhere
else that are not starters for you, they get that chance.
And he was a guy that kind of fell out
of favor a little bit. I mean, you got Mookie
Betts back out there in right field, so he's kind
of blocked where he could play with the Dodgers. And
I mean he's been a veteran since date one. I
(06:36):
mean I was around him there at the early part
of his career in Atlanta. And remember, I mean he
was a guy that he and Freddie Freeman, they both
came on at the same time. They were both on
Sports Illustrats covered together in terms of the being, you know,
the guys that were going to rejuvenate that organization. And
he carried himself like a ten year veteran even back then,
(06:57):
and now he's been in the league for ten plus
years after.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
That, this is your fifteen.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
I've said it numerous.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Times on Twitter that if the Astros are able to
pull this off this year and it's one of those
special seasons. The way that people in that clubhouse talked
about Trey Mancini, the way they talked about Michael Brantley,
They're gonna be saying the same things about Jason Heyward.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Let's hear from Jay hey how'd you end up here? Heyward?
I gotta believe other people wanted you.
Speaker 5 (07:22):
Baseball, playoff baseball, and this game back tonight. They're finding
a way out of no way and hanging in there,
so absolutely no panic from the guys and just having fun.
And it's not to see everybody come together right there
and rides up so water win and it's awesome to
be here first game to night in front of Houston fans.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
All I appreciate Jason Heyward on that one post game.
All right, So that was the first thing that caught
my mind or caught my eye. I'm like, all right,
then to your point, we started getting late in this
ball game and you and I were thinking the same thing.
I'm gonna fast forward. So that's the bottom of the fifth,
hey with let me remind the audience of busy since
(08:00):
June third, the Astros combined ops from the outfield is
the worst in baseball. They had to do something. So
look how many bodies they've thrown at first base. Now
they're throwing a hell of bodies in the outfield, an
area that we thought was surplus coming into the season.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Well, that's the way it was built out to be.
It was supposed to be, and I mean obviously, through
injury or just lack of production, it hasn't been. And
you know, I understand that. You know a guy that
wears a lot of the brunt of that is Jake Myers.
And you know, I saw you astros Twitter after that
final at bat last night. But I mean still, you know,
you're trying to find some sort of spark somewhere. And
(08:39):
I mean even to the point where Mauricio Dubon is
almost an everyday player out in the outfield now, yours
is getting time out in left field.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
Now.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
I mean you know, you're just trying to find some
sort of production anywhere you can. And I mean it
was a huge reason because you saw Chaz the other day.
I've never seen somebody who probably in that moment, should
have really just taken it all, went really enjoyed it.
You could see it on his face that he knew,
all right, well that's my parting shot, at least for now.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
After the two run home when you're talking two days.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Ago, because he knew.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
He obviously he's human, he's heard the news, and he.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
Alsoys you may have whispered something to him.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
But you also start looking around and you're like, well,
wait a minute. You know he's going to play the outfield.
You know, I'm an outfielder and I haven't been doing
very well. Uh oh, that's not good for me, and
sure and off it wasn't all right.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
So you had Dubon and left, Jake Myers and center,
and the aforementioned Jason Hayward in right. We talked about Dubon.
Jake Myers again in the field, didn't do much at
the play he went oh for four. So how do
we do this? Like I heard a conversation this morning,
I think it's interesting to get to on the other
side the buttons that were pushed and the substitutions that
(09:51):
were subsequent given those buttons being pushed. Jege Spottle, Let's
put him over the put him under the microscope on
the other side, warmed up on a Friday. Next up
Sports Talk seven Nightey.
Speaker 6 (10:02):
First always starts with altuva right, Ludolf Walk, he sets
the tone and then tonal good at batch Caratini, you
know the Censo that basis load of walk, staying in
the zone and not chasing.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
That's huge for a young player to.
Speaker 6 (10:20):
Have the presence and the capabilities just to stay calm
and understand the magnitude out of bat and get that walk.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
That was.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
That was that was big. Do we put another big knock?
Speaker 1 (10:32):
You know?
Speaker 6 (10:32):
I don't know how many times he's gone big knocks
for us this year, but you know this guy's ay.
They like big moments like that, so that's a huge
one there.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
When they started debating about gold, I'm not going say it.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
Manager Joel spot Up post game reacting to the six
three victory Astros over the Kansas City Royals. Astros now
ten games above five hundred game a half game in
the AL West. Welcome back in the next up, staying
northfold mean Dan Matthews, he is at Dan Matthews h
o U E caps.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
That's correct.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
You hear him on the A team getting those guys
sounding as great as they sound and chime in approprictly.
So tell us about those days. Tell me about your
Saturday show.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
At least the guy that sits in your chair. I mean,
you know, he's the straw starts to drink here. I'm
just kidding, Ac. Yeah, Space City Saturday coming your way tomorrow.
Be a lot of Astros in the first hour, obviously
trying to at least clinch a split in this series.
Tonight got fromber on the Mound, so you got that.
And then the second hour of the show tomorrow with
college football starting college football extravaganza.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
Speaking of college football, Bearsale's going to join us in
about ten minutes from now. JOEA. Spottle should be praised
for what he has done. It's a little unconventional. The
Dusty Baker astros don't substitute as much as these astros do.
But one of the feathers in the cap of Joe
(11:57):
Spotta is that he will get guys in and out,
move around the lineup. He is not air quotes married
to anybody at any time, so to speak. Uh, Now,
when everybody's healthy, you kind of have the ideal order
where you want people to go. But I mean, he's
pinching for dudes. I was reminded, who was that? Somebody
called It was that Paul and Huffman. Somebody called in
(12:18):
and reminded me Stan. I don't even know if he
sounds like that. Stan Dubond didn't start my bad. I
was at the Texan season premiere last night, so I
was trying to look at it.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Do come on, man, how dare you? I mean, look
at a box score here? What are we doing?
Speaker 1 (12:33):
And I'm looking at the box for at ESPN dot
com has it as Gamble.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Care about baseball over there? What are you doing?
Speaker 1 (12:40):
They had gambos starting getting right and then moving to left.
MLB dot com has it correct that being gamble started
and left and then moving on. There you go.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
You can go to the correct sources here MLB dot Com,
Brian McTaggart, The crew over there, they crosh it.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
They do a nice job. No, now, all right, joege spotted.
I asked gor to this yesterday about did he have
an issue taking out even though with a no hit
on the line, and even though they were beating the
but Jesus out of who was at Phillies? Did he
have an issue substituting alto ve em Bragman out right?
(13:17):
So substitution is the question that I bring to you
at this point, Dan, and I go, do you have
an do you have an issue? Excuse me with? Like
he emptied the clip, everybody on the bench came and
played last night there, Shay wickom Caratini, Descenzo, we mentioned Dubon.
I mean everybody played. Now it worked. You cool with that?
(13:39):
Or is that of a bad way? You call it
time overmanaging? No overmanaging, but bad habit.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
No, I don't think it's a bad habit.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
I mean, you know, let's let's start with the first
point you brought up there, of what you asked Fordy.
I had no problem with that, and I loved his
response after the game too, of saying, look, no Hitter's great,
that's awesome, but it's a fleeting moment. It's not going
to be something that if we don't finish this thing off,
that people are gonna be like, well, at least you
got that no hitter in Philly. People are gonna go
back to it and say, what are you doing?
Speaker 7 (14:07):
Man?
Speaker 3 (14:08):
If you could have possibly kept these guys a little
bit healthier, a little fresher, and they could have possibly
gotten you over the hump in the Alcs and gotten
you the World Series, Like why didn't you do it?
So that's something that I have zero problem with. And
again too, the presence of mind. I talk about this
all the time. He's a first year manager. He's a
guy that could make a lot of impulsive decisions. He's
a guy that could make a lot of decisions that
(14:29):
you're like, well, a veteran guy, Bruce Bochi doesn't do that,
you know, Joe Madden didn't do that, Like, what are
you doing? Man like, I think that that is something
that is a real point of confidence for me and
this guy, that he trusts his team as much as
he does and the team trusts him as much as
they do.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
But last night.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
Though, at the time and the result was great, but
at the time, when he's to your words, emptying the
clip of bringing in de Zenzo, bringing in Dubon, I'm
kind of like, man, you're over managing here, Like you're
down by one. You don't to go for broke right now.
But it worked out because both of those guys ended
up being the difference in the game.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
Yeah, there's an RBI for de Zenzo. You mentioned Dubond
tow RBIs for him, So hey, it works. Now while
we're talking about substitutions, this Shae wickhamb experience at third base,
this experience experiment, I'll get it together. Shae Wickham is
not the future third basement of this team.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Probably unlikely.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
I mean, you know, I saw the other night some
people sharing I think it was Astro's future on Twitter,
that Bryce Matthews getting work over there at third base,
and people thinking that maybe that could be a possibility
in the future.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
So I don't know.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
I don't know if they go veteran there, but I mean,
I like what the guy brings you in terms of
the at bats. I think just the kind of problem
with him is just finding a place for him to play.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
Yeah, like the fielding in third base. And Gordon and
I have had our roundabouts about Alex Bregman's value to
this ball club. But this is now back to back
games where Shae wickkom at third. Defensively, there been some snaffoods.
Now the problem is there is enough defensive miscues happening
all over the bleeping field. And yes they won, and
(16:12):
we want to put the emphasis on that. I'm just
thinking about moving forward and trying to claim this Al
West title. Astro's fourteen eras in the last twenty games
highlighted by Pinya's five over the last ten.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
See there's the one right there. The guy that should
not be making them is making a ton of them,
right And I mean it's either throwing last night. I mean,
physical errors are going to happen. I don't mind the
physical errors, you know, because it's just part of the game.
I think we probably you know, take for granted just
how good these guys are and how clean they are
fielding the baseball. Then when you have moments like this,
(16:47):
you kind of look at it and say, well, what's
going on here, like where the defense fall off? And
Joe Spot has even talked about it too. They beat
the Red Sox in that game. He was like, yeah,
this one was great, but yeah, we booted the ball around.
We can't have that. That loses us ball games. I
would rather have somebody make a physical error than make
a mental air, which, by the way, to Space City
Sports on Twitter pointing this out last night, you see
(17:09):
how emphatic John Singleton was of not only charging the
baseball at first base, but then telling Hunter Brown, no,
stay over there, I'm getting this out. Oh I'm a
toning for this one. I'm making this play and good
for him. Yeah, absolutely, let'son learned.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
Let's also take some time to brag on the other
side of this thing, Hunter Brown. Hunter Brown goes out there,
grabs a quality start six and two thirds for him,
allowing just two hits to two runs scored, none earned,
walking just to striking out four. Hunter Brown down now
to a three point five to five e r RA.
(17:43):
Let's bring up Hunter Brown too, mister Brown, your performance tonight.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
Sir, I thought I just mixed speeds really well.
Speaker 7 (17:51):
Yeah, they are a good line. They have a lot
of a lot of really good players, and you know,
just try to try to keep them off balance.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
And I did a good job of that night. Let's
roll on a brown four right behind it. You get
a quality start for you, Brent. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (18:05):
I mean I tried to focus on, you know, getting
better each each and every day, you know, and throwing
program bullpens things like that. So you know, over the
course of the year, you're gonna have ups and downs.
Unfortunately for myself, and you know, actually, you know us
the beginning was was was down for us.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
So it just shows, you know.
Speaker 7 (18:26):
The the type of team that we can be. And
you know, he can't count out, and you know we're
gonna keep coming back, keep fighting. You know, that game
today was was a it's a good representation of that.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
That's for him too. I mean that's for him as well.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
I mean, where the first time he saw these guys,
he came back this time and said it's not going
down that way this time guys. And I mean he
set the tone early. I mean he was a little wild,
a little erratic in the first inning, but able to
let his fielders work behind him, get Salvador Prez to
strike out, and sets his guys up for a chance
to be able to take the lead in the first
unable to do it. But I mean, we're seeing a
(19:02):
guy that's grown leaps and bounds this year as a
picture because you've seen him do it all. You've seen
him do the dominant performance. You've also seen him do
the grinded out performance as well. That's you know, that's
that's huge growth because for a young picture, you get
into those grinded out scenarios, you're kind of like, uh, oh,
it's not going my way today.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
I just don't have it. And we've seen Paris down
and go.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
We've seen great guys like Justin Verlander does it all
the time. I don't have my best stuff, But let
me at least eat up some innings growth and let
me get into this game and then they'll come, they'll
come help me out on the other side there. I
just want to bring this up, something that I was
reminded of. As we go to break, we'll talk Astros
again in the eleven o'clock hour. The Astros are now
(19:45):
six and forty three when trailing after six innings, excuse me,
six and forty three when trailing after seven innings. This
is a game three months ago. The Astros lose, no
doubt about it. This has been just one of the
I don't know what to categorize. This has been a quirky,
weird ass season in Astros baseball history, certainly in this
(20:08):
golden era. Now, I think they're still gonna make the
postseason and they'll be fine and have an opportunity to
get back and win a pennant. But like they pulled
out one last night, they normally would not have and
it was all hands on deck and the start again
in hunt of Brown. Now is Brian a Brey you
scenario Brian and Bray, you little bumpy here and there.
(20:30):
All in all, he's been all right, he's been solid.
And then Pressley and of course Josh hated. What is
that twenty nine consecutive saves for him? Quick thought from
you before we wrap up on this segment.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
Yeah, it was vintage Presley last night. You love to
see that.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
I mean, he gets the first guy on, but then
gets the double play in the final out of the inning,
gets out of it with a Bray you. I said it, dude,
you throw ninety eight ninety nine miles an hour. What
are you doing trying to trick the guy with a slider?
Burn his ass like Burnham inside. Wherever you throw ninety eight,
you tell them right there with the bases loaded, here's
(21:04):
my best.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
Good luck, try to hit it.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
I don't disagree what you have to say there. All right,
let's put a pin in astros talk. Now. We got
Bart Sali to talk from college football. Buffs were in
action last night. Somebody in the ACC's in trouble. They
get a trigger man that goes down. And we will
preview this weekend's games as I'm off to Austin at
the conclusion of this program, as the Horns welcome in
(21:28):
Colorado State. All right, let's do that. Take some phone
calls as well, once we get through with Barrett Salid.
The phone number anytime you guys want to get in
seven one, three, two two five seven ninety YO, gos
last us not anybody, good job, big foss shine. Halfway
through our one here in the sports talking seven ninety
(21:49):
studios on the Football Friday, college football is among us.
I'm on the road to Austin as soon as we
wrap up this program. But uh, I think something that
was intriguing one of the top tier storylines of college
football coming into this twenty four season with Deon Sanders
and his Buffaloes coach has been a bit onery last
night or leading into last night, as his Buffalo's had
(22:13):
their hands full with North to go to State. As
many of us anticipated that they would Buffaloes do win
the game. Shador Sanders, Travis Hunter, and others play well
Oklahoma in action tonight. Know Missouri played last night. Beat
up on somebody. Kansas ranked twenty two, beat up on
some folks last night. Without any further do, let's go
to the guest line. Now, welcome in someone that knows
(22:34):
the college football game and covers it as well as
anyone in our business. Barrett Sale joins us. Now, Barrett,
good morning to you, sir, Good morning. How we doing
doing well? You've heard Bear Sale allow me to do
that part serious sex him College Football also writes for
out kick, you know what they do over there as well,
(22:55):
doing good? God damn Matthews alongside. Let's start with that.
I thought most of the guys that weren't watching on
astros last night was watching what was going on in Colorado.
What did you think week one?
Speaker 8 (23:07):
Now that it is underway, Yeah, I mean with with Colorado,
it's the same exact team, right because this time last
year we were talking about Jajurrisanders, Travis Hunter, and Dylan Networks,
and now we're talking about Jerris Anders, Travis Hunter, and
Jimmy Horn. The offensive line still sucks, the defensive line
still sucks, the in game coaching is still not very great.
(23:28):
But you've got two of the best five players in
college football. They campell you out of a lot of issues.
So yeah, I mean, to me, it's we shouldn't over
react to anything Colorado does. We shouldn't also underreact to
anything Colorado does. Jerris Andrews is a superstar, Travis Hunter
is the best player in college football, and so to me,
(23:49):
I think it's, you know, take the bad with the good,
put it in proper perspective, and you know, let's see
if Colorado can get to a bowl game, because ultimately
that's the goal, especially with that schedule, you know, that's
the goal.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
And if they if they.
Speaker 9 (24:01):
Go to a bowl game, that actually is progress considering
how bad that schedule, how tough that schedule, is, So,
you know, I don't know if they can get there,
honestly after after watching that, because I mean, Shador is
running for his life and he's got five dudes in
his face and he's.
Speaker 8 (24:15):
Making all those throws. But eventually that that's going to
take a toll on him, at least you would think. So,
you know, it'd be interesting because now those those expectations
are pretty That's a good North Dakota State football team too,
so those expectations maybe not as as hyped up as
they were last year this time, but certainly that hype
train's starting to crank up again.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
And to your point, Barrett's, I mean, you know, don't
underreact to throwing the football second and eight when the
other team doesn't have any timeouts. You're up by five,
about a minute forty six left in the game. He
stopped the clock, and then of course you give him
the football back with the chance to throw for a
win at the volume. So yeah, let's let's not underreact
to that, you know, let's localize it here a little bit.
(24:59):
Is Stanna alluded to Texas opening up their season tomorrow
Colorado State. A lot of people high on this Texas team.
How do you see them shaping out in twenty twenty four.
Speaker 8 (25:09):
I am high on Texas as well. I think that
anybody who's taking Texas lightly in the SEC is doing
a disservice to themselves.
Speaker 1 (25:17):
We saw what Texas can do.
Speaker 8 (25:19):
We saw that Texas can win in Alabama in SEC
country the way SEC teams are supposed to win by
double digits, and that's how Starts built that program. And
you know, I think moving forward, look, they're going to
win the battle on the offensive line almost all the time,
and that's going to certainly help, you know, sort of
make up for what was it Now it's them running
(25:41):
back room. So I think Texas in my game by
game predictions, I got them going undefeated in the regular
season and then losing the SEC championship game. That's still
making the playoff. I think making the playoffs should be
the bare minimum for that team. You've got one of
the best players in the country in Quinn yours, You've
got a top five pick along the offensive line, You've
got four guys back there. I think the wide receiving position,
(26:01):
even though it's kind of a point of contention, will
be just fine. You know everyone's talking about is Avon.
I'm not necessarily worried about is Avon. I think you know,
when all is said and done, he's gonna be third,
maybe fourth in terms of wide receiver production because they've
got some dudes in that room too. So uh, I
think Texas will be fine.
Speaker 1 (26:17):
Now.
Speaker 8 (26:17):
I am Dan, I'm I've been on on board with
the Longhorns for a long time now and down here
in the in the SEC in Atlanta, that gets uh,
that gets people all riled up this year for this
now it's uh, it's legit. Sar I built a monster.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
The Voice of Bears Lee hosts college football Smother Than
Cover courtesy of Sirius XM also writes for out Kick,
joining staring north Fleet Dan Matthews, and for Gordon and
sticking with the State of Texas in the Southeastern Conference
game of the weekend. I think for me, there are
too Dan would probably say three, but I'm going to
(26:55):
uh this this noted Dame travels to Kyle Field Mike
Elkos game. There. What do you think God acts hail
for the Irish?
Speaker 8 (27:07):
I know that A and M's kind of been sort
of this chic pick now like people are starting to
look at him going Okay, I can see something there.
Speaker 2 (27:16):
I see something there.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
I just.
Speaker 8 (27:19):
I'm against Notre Dame. I don't at Notre Dame like
Riley Leonard is so good at quarterback and Notre Dame's
got such a good defense. And so I think, you know,
Mike Elko is the right guy for the job. But
I think putting like eight and four that number on
him right now is too much, too fast. Let's just
see how he does. Let's just see how he eases
into this, because you know, this is different than Duke.
(27:41):
This is a much different animal. And he knows that
he's been there as a coordinator. But I just think
with people are underestimating how good Notre Dame receivers are,
including Jayden Whitehouse.
Speaker 1 (27:52):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (27:52):
And it's it surprises me because usually Notre Dame is
the one that had the magnifying.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
Less all over. It's so, but I think.
Speaker 6 (28:00):
It will be fine.
Speaker 8 (28:01):
I just don't think we should overreact to to what
happens if they lose. And I think A and M fans,
you know, an nfls are known for their patients for sure.
Speaker 3 (28:10):
Yeah, I was gonna say both both of those, Both
of those are in large supply there and Brian College Station. Hey, Barrett,
it can be in the SEC, it could be outside
the SEC. Who's a program that people aren't talking enough about,
at least for this season?
Speaker 8 (28:26):
L s U.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
Well, and I'm not saying this Dan, we're friends.
Speaker 3 (28:32):
I don't want to make I mean, it definitely doesn't hurt,
but go on, please if.
Speaker 8 (28:37):
I wanted to, if I wanted to get Dan talking,
I'd say LSU sucked and then we could yell.
Speaker 3 (28:41):
I was gonna say then, then I'd say, Barry, it's
been nice talking with you. We'll we'll catch up soon, but.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
We won't because you never come home.
Speaker 10 (28:49):
But no, L s U.
Speaker 1 (28:52):
L s U.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
There's this whole idea.
Speaker 8 (28:54):
Jayden Daniels is gone, LSU is gonna suck or whatever. Garrett,
that's my is a legit superstar. We hadn't seen it yet,
but the pieces here and there we know we can play.
Losing Malik Neighbors is not that big of a deal
because Kyri and Lacy and they've got some other dudes.
(29:18):
How many people knew Elite Neighbors this time last year.
Speaker 1 (29:20):
It's a faint.
Speaker 8 (29:24):
Yeah, so I think they'll be fine. But if you
return six starting offensive Linemen six.
Speaker 11 (29:32):
That's what legitimately, that's the.
Speaker 8 (29:33):
Number you're gonna be, all right, and they're going up
against the USC team that's utter trash defensively. And I
know LSU was utter trash defensively last year too, but
I think they fixed that problem by bringing in Blake
Baker to coordinate that defense. But you know, l s
U A they're just gonna be good in general, but
be that schedule sets up really well for them to
make a run.
Speaker 1 (29:55):
All right, we'll get you high on this one. Barrasie
kind of enough to join us here on next up
for another cup seconds here. The other game of interest
for me National Championship implications, of course, Georgia Clemson gonna
face off in a pretty much a neutral site game.
We know that the Bulldogs are gonna be represented, having
won two of the last three national championships. Do you
(30:16):
have Georgia as your national champion? I do.
Speaker 8 (30:20):
I have Georgia as the national champion. I think they lose,
Like I said, I think they lose in the regular
season in Texas to get their revenge in Atlanta. And
I actually have Georgia being Texas the third time in
the National championship game.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
I didn't plan it that way.
Speaker 8 (30:34):
That's just the way it worked out. But yeah, I
think Georgia, I don't think think it'll be a close
game this weekend in Atlanta. I think that I'll be there.
I think it's gonna be I think Clemson's being overlooked
a little bit.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
I agree with that, but yeah.
Speaker 8 (30:45):
I mean they're gonna have a good offensive line. And
I don't know, I still believe in Kate Clubnick. I'm
not really sure why at times, but I really I
do and so, but yeah, I think Georgia. Georgia went
the national championship two deep, too talented and uh you
know ur He's party shits an incredible catch.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
He's definitely built a bohema there in Athens. Appreciate Barrett
Sali College football smothered and covered serious XM college football
as well as columnists for OutKick. Find him on social
as one hundred and thirty five thousand plus other folks
have done so at Barrett double R double T Sali
(31:23):
At that's s A L L double E. Appreciate you
joining us on a Friday and enjoy your holiday weekend.
Speaker 8 (31:29):
Thanks boys, Enjoy, Enjoy babysitting Dan, someone's got.
Speaker 1 (31:33):
I'm our fifteen account. I'm out of here. I'll talk
all right, We're over just a little bit. We'll come back.
We will take some phone calls, will react to what
we heard from Bed, and then to start the eleven
o'clock hour, let's do some Texans deep dive. Some predictions
for the twenty twenty four season have come out. This
is next up Sports Talk seven ninety. Let's wrap up
(31:59):
our one on a Friday. What say you?
Speaker 3 (32:01):
We should have had the Gordy version of this, the
Gordy version you've you've never heard Gordy sing this?
Speaker 1 (32:07):
No? Wow? Should I?
Speaker 12 (32:08):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (32:09):
Is it like good or bad?
Speaker 2 (32:11):
Incredibly good?
Speaker 1 (32:12):
Gordi kinsing Yes, No, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (32:15):
He nails he nails the shaggy part.
Speaker 1 (32:20):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (32:20):
I'll have to uh, I'll have to find the footage
and I'll pass it along. You'll be impressed.
Speaker 1 (32:24):
We'll get some Ranch Waterston and then we'll we'll hear
what got going on? Just heard from Barrislee serious ex
Sam talking from college football. Also, we'll get back into
some strolls as well as the Texans to start the
eleven o'clock out. With that being said, let's wrap up
these calls. Whatever you guys want to get in on
(32:44):
seven one, three, two, two, five, seven ninety. We just
got through talking about college football, so let me take
Brian and Humble. Good morning to you.
Speaker 13 (32:52):
Hey, what's going on, guys?
Speaker 1 (32:54):
How you doing? What up? Man? How you feeling good?
Speaker 13 (32:57):
First time caller? Man, I listened to all the shows.
Aren't that like five in the morning nosing on Saturday
when they're talking about gardening? Thank My question is you
all been talking about college football all day? And I'm hey,
I've been living in Houston for twenty five years, but
I'm a big Organ Ducks fan. I got got Ducks tattooed.
(33:17):
I mean, nobody's talking about Oregon. What's their chances? I
want to hear what you got to say about that?
And also Dana Brown, great moves. Until King Tuck comes back,
I'll shut up and listen. Thank you.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
I appreciate the call. That's our guy, Brian in Humble. Yeah.
I came under some fire last year because I was
very vocal about how Dan Lanning handled the game against
the Colorado Buffaloes and the Deon Sanders deal and so
Bo Nicks, and that was a team that was good.
I thought that they had an opportunity to buy for
(33:50):
a national championship. Now bow Knicks is gone, and I
don't know what to expect from Oregon this year. I'm
trying to pull up their schedule now, I know, Dan,
and this is where you and going to y'all get
going a little deep on college football right now than
I am. I have not seen a lot of Oregon.
Where are you at? Who's replacing bow Knicks? Where are
they going?
Speaker 3 (34:09):
Dylan Gabriel is going to be the replacement. Yeah, he
was the former UCF and then went to Oklahoma played
some pretty good football there.
Speaker 2 (34:18):
Now at Oregon.
Speaker 3 (34:19):
You know, the funny thing is is people still think
of Oregon as being the you know, high powered offense
that they were during the Chip Kelly days. No, Dan
Lanning where he came from Bama Georgia. He wants to
beat you up. And I mean in that conference now
against you know the big ten teams are gonna be playing.
They're gonna have a big one in the middle of
October at home against Ohio States. I mean, you're going
(34:39):
to have to go through a pretty good gauntlet there
to be able to try to get into the final
twelve of the season, so they got a good chance.
I don't know how the rest of the schedule breaks down,
but in terms of you know, how they want to
play you, they want Tom all you.
Speaker 2 (34:52):
That's that's how they want to beat you.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
Well, the good news for them. I am looking at
this schedule and now I remind people listening the college
football folks comes in this season ranked just ahead of
the Longhorns, number three in the country. They go Idaho, Boise,
Oregon State, U See La, Michigan State. Before they get
their first race.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
Sleep on Boise.
Speaker 3 (35:12):
A lot of people thinking that Boise is one of
those group of five teams that sneaks into the final.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
Twelve point taking this thing looks this conference realignment. I'll
have to get off on a tangent maybe in eleven
o'clock hour, and then kind of pisses me off. All right,
let's keep it moving. Shot. We Stros went action last night.
They incout one sixty three. Stros win game and a
half game over Seattle. Tom, and Cyprus has been holding
for a while. Good morning to you, Tom, You're next up.
Speaker 12 (35:37):
Thanks for the line, guys. Hey, I want to give
joe as Spotta some props. You know, I've been a
critic of Joe as Spotta. I never did it on
the air. I don't second guess. I'm not a baseball manager.
I don't have any idea of what I would do.
But I got to give him this props. This team
has struggled. You all know where they've come from the
beginning of the season. We questioned their pitching, rightfully shut
(35:58):
so and a spot. He's kind of stumbled and fallen
down quite a bit, and he's picked himself up and
he's kept going. I think that's something that's worthwhile to
point out. I think he's finally putting it together as
the team starts to get better. Now. I look for
this next three weeks for everybody to come together. I
(36:20):
like the moves they've made out in the outfield. I'm
going to miss Charles McCormick, but hey man, I think
we're going to be solid. I look for them to
win the division still, only because they're in that position.
I don't think there'll be a spoiler. I think they'll
win it out right, and once that happens, you never know.
You never know what could happen when the playoffs start.
(36:41):
So props to Joe Espada, I'm looking for great things
for the season. I still think they're going to do it.
I think this is going to be their finest, their
finest season yet. Thanks for letting me anyhow.
Speaker 1 (36:52):
Appreciate it, myman, Thomas Cyprus, have a great weekend. Final
call of this hour, Charles on the East Side Channel View,
what up?
Speaker 10 (37:00):
Yes, I have two questions for you. The first one
is did Tim Boys like the practice squad? And the
second question is do you know who made the practice squad?
Speaker 1 (37:12):
Got you appreciate the call, my man, Charles and chan
of you. Tim Bull did not make the practice squad
for the Texans. He was however, added to the practice
squad of the Miami Dolphins. The third quarterback on this
team right now, Keton Slovs of Byu, formerly of Southern California,
and remember him over there. He has been added to
(37:35):
the practice squad. So Gordon and I went through the
twelve initial signees from the day before yesterday. The Texans
yesterday announced the signing of the five additional spots. The
names that you would notice, there's Brandon Daniels and Cole
Further Gruden, I'm saying that wrong. Two guys out of Utah.
(37:57):
Its Xavier Johnson out Ohio State, Mark Perrys Safety out
of TCU so may be familiar with AM. And there's
Keton Slova, so there's the third street quarterback for the Texans.
He's on the practice squad. If the Texans had to
get to Keenan Slovas.
Speaker 3 (38:13):
No, you don't want to have to get there, and
it wouldn't get there. I mean, you know, I remember
living that life in twenty eleven of Jake the Loom.
He still plays well he didn't now he does. Is
that Jeff Garcia over there? Like, that's that's Jeff Garcia's grandpa,
isn't No, that's him all great out, That's that's the guy.
I will never forget seeing Jeff Garcia in the locker
(38:33):
room there over on Kirby and I was like, that's
that's not him, and somebody was like, no, that's that's him.
Speaker 1 (38:38):
I was like.
Speaker 3 (38:38):
That that looks like the you know, the older uncle
of Jeff Garcia. That doesn't look like the guy that
I remembered. But no, I mean, you know, if it
got to that point, you'd probably be bringing in somebody else.
In terms of veteran experience. Keaton Slovas, I can say
this pretty confidently will not be on the active roster
at any time this season.
Speaker 1 (38:58):
Let's talk and continue Talking Texans to kickoff second hour
of this program here on next up, final hour of
the week, going into a holiday weekend, Real Texans talking.
Listen Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 11 (39:13):
Now, what's next?
Speaker 1 (39:18):
The next step?
Speaker 13 (39:18):
We take?
Speaker 1 (39:19):
The next step?
Speaker 2 (39:19):
Next time?
Speaker 14 (39:21):
I'm next?
Speaker 12 (39:24):
What this is?
Speaker 2 (39:27):
Next time with Stan Northfleeton, Chris Gordy.
Speaker 10 (39:31):
Let's see watch next.
Speaker 1 (39:35):
All right, let's get business done and then we can
enjoy our holiday weekend work to do. First though line
from the Sports Talk seven ninety studios nestled in between
Uptown Park and river Oaks Galleria area is where we are. Damn,
it looks like it's gonna be a little great, little
wet this holiday weekend. Not gonna stop me from having
a great time. I'm head at d Austin. Uh. I've
been talking about it for days. I'm super giddy. Uh.
(39:57):
Going to d k R is on my sports bucket list.
I have not had a chance to do that in
the well over a decade that I've been living in
the state of Texas, and about eight of those years. Yeah,
about eight years or so. I in Hearson.
Speaker 3 (40:09):
You're talking about, you know, the weather. I mean, you know,
the thing that I'm concerned with is the sun doesn't
shine on the couch.
Speaker 2 (40:15):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (40:16):
I don't care about what the weather is inside. When
I'm you know, watching hours upon hours of college football.
That is not an issue for me.
Speaker 1 (40:23):
You're going to be enjoying some callbox, I presume, and
some other there there.
Speaker 3 (40:29):
There could be some some good treats this weekend. There's
no doubt about that.
Speaker 1 (40:33):
I have one or two myself. Gordie is out. That's
the voice of Dan Matthews. He produces the A Team
right here on seven ninety from three to six each
and every weekday. Find him on social won't you at
Dan Matthews h O U all caps in FORO Connedy
mc governor Trey Walker. On the other side, they appreciate
him sitting there with us on a Friday, Tom's in
(40:55):
the studio doing something with the laptop with up Tom.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (40:57):
Usually usually when engineering shows up, you got to start
to No, he does it. He's like he's like Jim
Cantore during you know, hurricane time. You see him coming
to your town. Well, you need to be somewhere else.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
Yeah, here to help. So is Jim Cantore.
Speaker 1 (41:12):
Doing this on a Friday? I mentioned sports bucket list
at least from a college football standpoint. We will talk
Texans here, uh momentarily seven one, three, two two five,
seven ninety as the Texans. I was in NRG yesterday
they did the annual season premiere. You go to the
seven ninety account. You'll see some of the faces and
what they were wearing. Guys had on some sneaks. I
(41:32):
gotta tell you that story as well. Uh, dk R
is on my college football bucket list. Horse you the
big House. Those would be the few that come to
mind first.
Speaker 3 (41:45):
Yeah, I've done the shoe and it's it's everything that
it's advertised us. Yeah, it's awesome. Columbus game day is
pretty awesome. To be where else.
Speaker 1 (41:53):
I've done Kneeland Stadium in Nacho. I've not been down
to bad Rouge. I've not seen you need to do
that has to be a game, has to be that game.
I've heard that more than once. So I got to
get on the big bosses here. See can they find
me some tickets? Put some pressure on Gordon's ass he's
supposed to be connected. Gord is out in Vegas watching
LSU in Southern California. We mentioned that as well, USC
(42:14):
going to oh shoot, why can't say it now? Well,
USC blaze, why can't say it?
Speaker 2 (42:19):
Oh these I'll say.
Speaker 1 (42:21):
Thank you doesn't do anything for him. Well, a college
football environment not anymore. I mean, because it's a shell
of what it was. Not the building itself, but the environment.
I mean when Pete Carroll was there and you had
you know, Ray mal Luga, Brian Taylor, Mays and all
those guys on defense. I mean, that place was rocking.
It was awesome to be I've been to the building twice.
(42:43):
Last time I was out in LA.
Speaker 3 (42:44):
It was a chance for me when I saw that
one of the gates was open, people can go in,
take a picture, Olympic flame, all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
And it's a cool building.
Speaker 3 (42:53):
I mean, it's it's just the problem is you see
it on what was PAC twelve after dark and there's
about forty thousand people there, so it looks like about
ten thousand people are there. It's just you know, a
half empty building. Yeah, I was gonna say, I mean
for all the venues you brought up ben the Neeland.
I was fortunate enough, being an SEC country to go
to most of them. Did both of the Bama schools,
(43:14):
and you know everybody right, I mean, you know at Tuscaloosa, Bryant, Denny, everybody. Oh,
it's such a great environment. It's fine. The stadium itself
is I think too big.
Speaker 1 (43:25):
They've they've definitely added on and done some things. Bama's
a cool scene. I think Georgia between the hedges is
a cool scene. I've done that now.
Speaker 3 (43:34):
It used to not be a Rackus atmosphere. It used
to be very much a wine and cheese crowd and
you know, oh, hey, we've got a football game today.
But Kirby came in and turned that around and said,
you need to be a factor in these games. Look,
I mean that fan base is all of a sudden,
I think overnight kind of it kind of becomes jerks.
I mean, like you know you're playing against them, if
(43:55):
you're the opposing team, you'll get barked at you, You'll
have all that stuff coming at you. But no, I mean,
Sanford Stadium has become quite an atmosphere. It's a lot
of fun.
Speaker 1 (44:04):
I just realized one that I want to add to
that list. I've never been to the Swamp, going to
and now it won't be the same now as it
was because Napier is on the hot seat head coach
of the Gators. How is that college game the environment?
I know you want to say something about the Swamp
real quick. Has anybody around here been the Oklahoma what's
oh you like on a game day? I hadn't seen that.
(44:25):
I just watched on TV like everybody.
Speaker 2 (44:26):
Else going to say.
Speaker 3 (44:27):
I mean, I mean, Gaylord Stadium looks fine enough, and
you know, obviously OU fans are proud, but never funny enough.
Had a chance to go to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium
the Swamp never did and I'd like to go there.
Speaker 2 (44:38):
And I'd like to go to Florida State too. I'd
like to check that out.
Speaker 1 (44:41):
I played in dope Campbell before. It is. It's an
SEC type environment. At least it was. I was there
in the Bobby Boden years, of course, when they were
at their peak and playing for a national championship. So
I mean, I've seen it at its best and it
was a thing. It's an SEC environment. Clemson is a
damn good rated another death Valley. It is a good
(45:03):
college environment's Death Valley.
Speaker 3 (45:05):
They're not Death Valley. They try they try to say that.
Speaker 1 (45:09):
A sensitive area. No, it's not.
Speaker 2 (45:11):
It's not sensitive because it's just not true.
Speaker 1 (45:14):
That that's where, literally say it's Death Valley. Rocket.
Speaker 3 (45:19):
That's cute. You can have your rock, you can run
down your hill. Don't twist an ankle running down the hill,
and make sure Dabo doesn't run you over when he's
doing his sprints on the field.
Speaker 1 (45:28):
He really does, all right. So that's let's uh college
football bucket list. I'm trying to think anywhere I played
in Penn State, so I know what Happy Valley is like.
I'm trying to think, is there anywhere else I really
want to go? Nowhere up north, nowhere out west. I'm
sure the Washington Huskies have a great scene stadium there
(45:49):
in Seattle. I'm good. I don't need to see that.
Speaker 3 (45:51):
I wouldn't mind going to Olson. I mean, it's a
smaller venue, but it's an incredibly loud venue where Oregon plays.
Speaker 1 (45:59):
I'm good. I think I've seen other than those four
five that I mentioned.
Speaker 2 (46:02):
Notre Dame was awesome.
Speaker 3 (46:03):
That that probably of all the all of the game
day experiences I've ever had. It was incredibly cool. Their
fan base couldn't have been nicer. Me being a good
Catholic boy. I went to Mass before and the the
concluding hymn was Notre Dame our Mother. So walked out.
The bells were ringing. I lit a candle in the grotto.
(46:25):
So I was.
Speaker 1 (46:26):
I was.
Speaker 2 (46:27):
I was a good Catholic that day.
Speaker 15 (46:28):
I was.
Speaker 1 (46:29):
If I had it to do again, I probably would
have signed to go play at Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (46:33):
Those gold helmets.
Speaker 1 (46:35):
Well, it wasn't that. It was really thinking about my future, Like,
if you're an average player at Notre Dame, you're going
to get a shot in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (46:42):
Well, I mean it's not only that, it's also I
mean the network you have there. I mean you're set
for life, no question. You have a degree from that school.
People see that, they're like, oh, you've got some brains
on it.
Speaker 1 (46:51):
The alumni base, now, UVA was the number one public
IV in the country when I came through there, so
I'm quite preudous of that. They found a little bit
u c l A proud there.
Speaker 3 (47:01):
You and Matt shab Or are you the first two
guys they show on the brochure?
Speaker 1 (47:04):
Now, I think they probably go with Matt First and
Chris Long and some mothers. Yeah, it was a good run,
all right, Oklahoma, by the way, in action tonight hosting
Temple on the four letter letwork, owe you and Brent Venables.
Speaking of Clemson, I'm surprised he's still there. I didn't
think that was gonna work. Their rank preseason sixteenth in
the country. Ohe you, favorite by forty two. Didn't know
(47:27):
we would strike a nerve with some of the folks here.
Let's talk some stadiums and some college football bucket lists.
We will talk Texans, I promise. Steven in Montrose, good morning,
Hey guys, how's it going all right? What else? Somebody?
Speaker 2 (47:41):
How you doing doing well?
Speaker 1 (47:43):
Thanks?
Speaker 14 (47:43):
Hey, So a couple of ones y'all just mentioned that
I've been to I've been to ohe you, it's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (47:51):
I got buddies that.
Speaker 14 (47:52):
Are Sooner fans. Their game day atmosphere is one of
the better ones I've been to. With the man, I'm
blanking on what they call it, but kind of like
their village or whatever campus corner. Yeah. And then another
one y'all just mentioned Washington. I went to a their
(48:15):
opener last year. Against Boise and we sailgated, so my
my wife's friends, her her father in law has a boat.
Speaker 1 (48:28):
Anyway, so we.
Speaker 14 (48:31):
To the stadium and basically you dock right outside the stadium.
Speaker 1 (48:39):
Niversity of Tennessee.
Speaker 14 (48:42):
Yeah, people are, you know, tailgating essentially on these boats.
And Michael Pennix's family came onto our boat and stuff
like you know.
Speaker 1 (48:51):
It was it was.
Speaker 14 (48:52):
A pretty pretty cool atmosphere. So Washington, I think is
a good uh wild card so to speak.
Speaker 1 (49:00):
I'll take that, appreciate it. When the Huskies were here
playing at NRG last year in the National Championship Game
versus Michigan, I had a chance to connect with some
folks that were in town from Seattle and they told me,
like staying real talk, you need to come. I've never
been to Seattle. It's one of the cities that I
am embarrassed that I've not been to. I think I've
been to almost every other major city, but Seattle is
(49:22):
one that has eluded me. So I might need to
spend some time over there and go check out what
they got going on there.
Speaker 3 (49:27):
Olson, Yeah, you hadn't lived until you've been at a
LSU tailgate. And Brandon Fojoko's family shows up and his
dad and everybody starts doing the hawka.
Speaker 2 (49:36):
Yeah, that was quite an experience, I'm sure.
Speaker 3 (49:38):
Like I was like, wait, that's for Hooko's dad, And
then sure enough he and his sons started doing the
hawka dance, and you're like, wow, all right, let's go.
Speaker 1 (49:47):
Burbon some good old boys and hawker dance with the
Polynesian and Pacific Island brother, I say, I mean, it's
an interesting me.
Speaker 3 (49:57):
It was an introduction of cultures, There's no doubt about it.
And of course you know right there it was say hey,
I thought we were wild.
Speaker 2 (50:05):
You guys just took it up a notch. We appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (50:07):
All right. I mentioned NRG with the site of the
college football National Championship Game. We remember last year. I
was in NRG last night. What did I see? What
did I hear? Let's talk Texans on the other side,
As promised Sports Talk seven ninety the legendary KB and Me.
Speaker 2 (50:23):
Next Up continues.
Speaker 7 (50:24):
Now I'm a new listener at already.
Speaker 4 (50:26):
A huge new listener.
Speaker 11 (50:28):
I love the show with Stant North playten Chris Gordy
on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 15 (50:33):
Ninety ye had two young football players that we think
can help us win. So I mean, I think they've
been very consistent going back to the spring. I'd saying
a lot of people might be surprised about Kamari Lasser.
I mean the least surprised people are the people in
our building. I means, starting with myself and Tamiko. So
(50:55):
he's got a good football player. I mean, go back
and watch any film you want to watch at Georgia.
I mean, played against the best people, very consistent, same
things that we've seen. So I'm glad he's here. I
say CB has.
Speaker 1 (51:06):
Done a good job.
Speaker 15 (51:07):
CB's got playmaking ability. You can take the ball away.
Even the play made against was it Pittsburgh or whatever
it was, I mean middle of the field. It wasn't
an interception, but not too many players can get to
that ball. So they're two good young players. They're two
really good kids that care a lot about football. So
you know, we'll see, hopefully they can help us win
some games. And if they can't, then you know, we'll
(51:28):
find somebody else.
Speaker 1 (51:30):
General Manager of the Houston Texas Nick Cassario. That was
I believe Wednesday after the roster cut down on Tuesday.
Give a take earlier in the week responding to Kamarin
Lasseter and Kaitlyn Bullock both making the team, speaking very highly,
we believe both will play a considerable amount, most certainly
(51:52):
kamar and Lassiter starting as cornerback two. I believe Kaylyn
Bullock by seasons in will be starting to get that
free safety spot, with Jaylen Petrie moving over to more
of a nickel role. Stay in Northfleet me. If you
missed the first hour and twenty minutes of the program,
go to Sports seven ninety dot com as well as
the free iHeartRadio w app to get caught up that'll
be posted at the conclusion of this show. I'm at
(52:15):
stand Sportsman. He is at Dan Matthews h ou all
caps Ian for Gordy. There is Trey Walker on the
other side there Connedy McGovern has already started his vacation.
Let's talk to some Texan, shall we. First of all,
the I did not see Lassiter, nor did I see
Kaylen Bullock last night at the Texan season premiere over NRG.
(52:39):
A lot of good things. They raised a ton of money.
I'm gonna make sure I get this in.
Speaker 2 (52:43):
Hey, it was one point four million. I saw it.
Speaker 1 (52:45):
I saw that for I retweeted as well for HISD
and the flag football excuse me, flight football program for
high school girls. Good for them. So one point four
million raids. So I appreciate Hallan k Hallan Kenner, Lord Cat.
Why can't say thank you? I don't know why I
(53:05):
couldn't get it out. I just drew a complete blank
right there. Appreciate them doing off the wheel.
Speaker 2 (53:09):
It's all right.
Speaker 1 (53:10):
It happened Friday, all right, So people looking good. Saw
and heard from Nick Cassario, he and his wife, Demiko,
he and his wife. Everybody's doing the thing two years now.
I'm gone forgot to wear my sneaks. I keep forgetting
it's a sneaker theme. And that's so. I had on
my heart bottoms last night.
Speaker 3 (53:27):
But it's football. You can't get too fancy, all right,
like you've got to. You've got to show some sort
of grit.
Speaker 1 (53:33):
People looking good. A lot of sponsors in the building
as well, so that part was cool. So the host
last night was Brevin Jordan. The previous year it was
Damian Pierce Dame. So Brevan Jordan is interviewing Nico Collins
and Damian Pierce comes out of know and grabs the
mic He's like, I just want all y'all to know
(53:53):
in the media, Brevan's not a better host than me.
Back to you, Brevin, and then he runs off. So
I was happy tos, but then it was also a
little bit sad, like Damn DP was the man coming
in the last season, and what a difference a season
can make. He doesn't have the same cachet. DP still
(54:13):
a great dude, just doesn't have the same cachet as
he did.
Speaker 3 (54:16):
You got to find it again. I mean, look, I mean,
that's that's life. I mean, it's not just sports of
you know, you're gonna be high one day and then
the next day it's well, there's somebody else that's better
than you. I mean, you know, you could either just
accept it or you can say, all right, fine, I'll
prove you wrong. And dp's got that opportunity. He's still
on the teams, so obviously they still have some plans
for him.
Speaker 1 (54:36):
Yeah, so I haven't asked you about this. Since we're
here with Damian Pierson, there's some other folks I want
to comment. You can go to the Sports seven ninety
dot com. It's where we are on the X platform,
and you'll see who is that there's Travis Johnson there,
there's way Smith got it. I wanted to see for
myself my own eyes. I wanted to see Joe Mixon, Nicocollins,
(54:57):
Petrie will Anderson Junr. So anyway, talking about the running backs,
DP haven't had a chance to hear you on this
five running backs kept. I think if a game was
tonight and it was second and eight and it's the
third series, fourth series, I think Cam Akers will go
in a game before Damian Pierce. What.
Speaker 3 (55:19):
Yeah, that's what it sounds like too. I mean it
sounds like and that's kind of a similar deal as well.
With a guy like Cam Akers who has played a
lot of years in this league, if they didn't necessarily
feel like they had any immediate role for him to play,
he's not here. He's in somebody else's camp right now.
Great Cowboys just signed Dalvin Cook. I mean held have
been there, he would have been anywhere else of somebody saying,
(55:41):
you know, we only have about three guys that we
can look at and feel somewhat comfortable handing the football
off too. So if that's the case, then that probably
means he's the second guy out behind Joe Mixon. Where
I look at this roster and I start to worry,
and this is gonna involve Stefan Diggs a little bit.
Let me get to that second. You talk about wanting
(56:02):
to be physical on defense, and probably your two groups
that you feel the least comfortable with are upfront defensive line,
especially the interior. You feel good about the edges what
I was gonna say, but the interior you don't feel
great about. And then linebacker, especially without Christian Harris. Right now,
now I get to the Stefan Diggs part. I mentioned
(56:22):
this last year with WEX when we were talking about
the roster. I said, CJ is not gonna have any
toys to work with this year. When you show that
you can do it, and you show that with the
cap space that you have out there, you can go
out and get toys, that's when they go out and
get toys. I think they went out and got and
did well enough in free agency. But my whole question is,
and I think Demiko, if you were being honest, would say,
(56:44):
wait a minute here, Like I'm talking about, I want
to set the tone defensively, you trade away one of
my guys I was gonna count on. We didn't bring
back another one and Sheldon Rankins. So we're gonna try
to be tough and physical upfront, and we're not gonna
have that part short up.
Speaker 1 (56:58):
So this is where my football acumen, in my opinion is,
and various opinions feel what you like. They clearly took
a step back in talent front end talent on the
defensive interior.
Speaker 2 (57:11):
See, and that's what I don't understand.
Speaker 1 (57:12):
Well, let me get to why I think he countered that.
So you lose Rankings and Collins, who, by the way,
it wasn't like we were doing a daily segment on
Rankings and Collins like they were pretty good. But these
aren't YO top Now, yes.
Speaker 3 (57:27):
Both of those guys, they were capable, they weren't going
to be the reason you want a game?
Speaker 2 (57:31):
Is that fair?
Speaker 1 (57:32):
Both of those guys? I would say fair. Both of
those guys are gonna start for the majority of the
teams in the league, which is cool. Not casting any spurgeons. Yes, yes,
these are not the best of the best of the best. Fine,
So what Domenko appears to have thought to himself is
I'm going to throw a different body type, a little
(57:53):
bit bigger, a little bit more size. Certainly, Polo Farticassi
falls into that category. And I'm gonna say he's a
I'm gonna add more size. I'm going to sacrifice some skill,
but I'm going to be deeper at the position. But
I'm going to elevate my edges. And that's when I
go get Denico Audrey and Denil Hunt right, and so
the D line as a whole.
Speaker 3 (58:14):
Mario Edwards, you know, Jerry Hughes, I get all of that,
but I mean it's also though too, Like receiver was
not your issue. Receiver was not a problem. No, Like
you knew that you were going to have Nico Collins back,
you knew that you were going to have Tank Dell back.
Speaker 1 (58:26):
Both both both with injury histories.
Speaker 3 (58:28):
Sure, I get that, but I mean it's also though too.
I mean it kind of comes in and I understand
what people outside say about Stefan Diggs, and I think
people are just waiting for one moment, and then of course,
you know, everybody wants to have somewhat of a prediction
without actually making a true prediction, and then you know
there's a moment on the sidelines in a point. See,
I told you I knew that was coming, Yeah, And
(58:49):
it probably is going to happen. Just prepare yourself for it.
That's not where I'm going with this. My point is
that again I was talking about the flashy players that
you want to have on your They sold jerseys, they do.
Speaker 2 (59:01):
All of that.
Speaker 3 (59:01):
Yeah, why necessarily rush to get that right now when
you had other pressing needs that possibly you could have added.
Speaker 2 (59:10):
Through a similar you know means so the line.
Speaker 3 (59:12):
You could have gone free agency, you could have gone
trade to address some of those issues that I talked about.
Speaker 1 (59:17):
Defensively, it's a hard cap. What they chose to do
is we're going to be less expensive on the defensive interior.
We're going to get a player. Denil Hunter is twice
the player Jonathan Grenad. That's why he's making twice the
money in this case. So they chose to go, all right,
we got a chance to get that guy. We're gonna
(59:37):
pay a Zase, who's an upgrade over Blake Cashman and
Denzel peenm right on. So we're gonna pay. We're gonna
pay a Ease, We're gonna pay Daniel Hunter. We're gonna
bring over a very versatile piece and one of the
Wiatt best signings on the defensive side of the football
in the league, and Denico Autrey didn't know he was
gonna be suspended for six games. But okay, you go
do that, and we're gonna use a rookie, our second
(59:59):
round pick or since our first pick of the twenty
twenty three draft. We're gonna go to SEC and get
a corner. He's gonna go option in Stingley. We feel
good about that. Cool. They chose to put the money
around the ricky quarterback, they chose to resigned shows had
to do that. We're gonna go get Steph Diggs on
a one year approven deal, and we're gonna go get
Joe Mixon to fortify his backfield and be better than
(01:00:21):
Singletary was a year ago. I get what.
Speaker 3 (01:00:23):
I think it was a wise decision, So I get
what you're saying, but it's also too You know, the
credit card bill comes due, and what I mean by
that is soon enough, you're going to have to pay
a ton of money to CJ. Then all those toys
on offense go away because you can't pay every single receiver,
you can't pay every single.
Speaker 1 (01:00:39):
Running back, but you can still pay people.
Speaker 3 (01:00:40):
And it circles back to what kept you from reaching
the AFC Championship Game last year.
Speaker 1 (01:00:45):
A lack of explosive weapons for one. I would say
the defense is really was, but.
Speaker 2 (01:00:50):
It wasn't your pressing need.
Speaker 3 (01:00:52):
You were still able to win football games even though
you really could not run the football.
Speaker 1 (01:00:55):
See. And I think that's where you and I have
subtle difference of opinion that I said it all off season, Gordon,
and I said right here in the studio and argue
for days on end, and I kept telling you people,
and I ended up being right. They cannot go back
out there with Jeff nic O'Collins and tang Dale. It's
not enough when you're going when you're in a conference
(01:01:16):
and a division like this, most certainly a conference where
people are scoring points, you can't win. They were playing
with one arm tie behind their back. They had to
go do something. It ended up being stuff did.
Speaker 3 (01:01:27):
But it's also though too here. Here's what it comes
back to is the basics is what wins. In January
and February, the Chiefs proved that the Chiefs, they did
the same thing. They paid Patrick Mahomes and everything. Hey
bye bye Tyreek Hill, bye bye everybody else. Now we'll
start drafting guys, and hopefully Isaiah Pacheco. Hey, that's awesome,
he hit That's great. But then how did they beat
(01:01:48):
teams last year? They mauled you defensively, they ground you down.
That's how they took care of Baltimore. And that's how
eventually they won the Super Bowl last year is because
finally with Christian McCaffrey, it got to a point of, hey,
we can't keep going to this guy because he's getting
beat up out on the field.
Speaker 1 (01:02:03):
This is just me and I'm a former defender myself,
playing on the edge for a little bit this league today,
in the NFL, if you can't score, you can't win
the Bowl. The Chiefs, in my mind, win the Super Bowl.
They play adequate defense. Spagnolo does an excellent job, but
they've got fifteen If you got fifteen and a Hall
of Fame An Kelc and Pacheco certainly has outrun his
(01:02:24):
draft star. And that's why I come back here at
home and looking to you talking Texas. On the other side,
the Texans, no c J. Stroud right now, we gotta go.
Rickie Deal a good offense in today's NFL, Trump's good defense.
Do you guys feel similarly maybe you feel differently seven
one three, two one two five, seven ninety and what
are the national pundits saying about the surprise for the
(01:02:45):
Texans this season? Caserio might have just given us a
sneak peek Sports Talk seven ninety KB and Me.
Speaker 11 (01:02:51):
Staton or Fleet and Chris Gordy.
Speaker 2 (01:02:56):
This is next up on Sports Sunk.
Speaker 1 (01:03:04):
Welcome, ladies and gentlemen to the eighth one of the world.
Twenty six minutes from now you will hear the voices
of Matt Thomas and Ross very An.
Speaker 2 (01:03:12):
Is that a threader or promise?
Speaker 1 (01:03:13):
That is a promise? The Matt Thomas Show coming your
way from noon to three. As we wrap up here,
that's the voice of that's Dan Matthews. He's in for
Chris Gordy is on a little bit of vacate, as
is Connor de McGovern. I'm still here for another twenty
six minus.
Speaker 3 (01:03:28):
There's a Bingo card two for the Matt Thomas Show.
There needs to be one. Matt and Ross make fun
of each other. Matt cracks on the Texans beat Core.
There's a lot of others that He's got his go
to moves.
Speaker 1 (01:03:42):
There's no doubt about it. I used the term on
Rey to describe I forget who we were talking about
earlier in the show. That would be Matt Thomas.
Speaker 3 (01:03:50):
I mean, look, his nickname should be Stray because everybody
catch everybody catches straight when you deal with Matt Thomas.
Speaker 1 (01:03:57):
He's a good dude. Though. I really appreciate Matt Thomas
and Ross. They make a great show and I appreciate
them being here on the station. All right. We were
talking Texas on the other side and about how this
team projects. And I want to get to this ESPN
dot com article here in just a second, But there's
something that happened overnight that I think is pretty interesting
(01:04:22):
as it pertains to what could it would have shut
up and Brandon Aiyu was at an impass with the
forty nine ers. He wanted his money. He essentially, as
they reported, took the deal that had been on the
table for like the last month. It ties in with
(01:04:44):
Tyreek Hill as the seventh i think highest paid player
in the league receiver rather on an annual basis. So
it makes me think, and I'm trying to pull up
the deal right now so that I can talk about
it in its entirety. Essentially, league the question is this
when we were talking about like the philosophy at Cassio
(01:05:05):
and Demico and how they built the twenty four Texans.
It's the second older at least it was prior to
the fifty three man cut down. It was the second
oldest roster in the NFL. They've done the right blend
of rookies and veterans They've chosen. We've got cat Room.
CJ's on a rookie deal. We're gonna equip him with
everything that he needs to go make a push and
get it done. All right. So now part of that
(01:05:25):
is Stefan Diggs. With the Ayuk deal being done, I
ask you, would you rather have Steph Diggs on a
one year prove it deal at twenty SOMEI million dollars
call it twenty four, twenty five million, whatever it is,
Or would you rather have Brandon Ayuk, a younger player,
second team All Pro this past season, multiple Super Bowls
he started and played in, clearly knows Bobby Sloyk's offense.
(01:05:48):
Would you rather have him had they traded for him
at essentially more money than Nico? You're talking thirty million
a year.
Speaker 3 (01:05:56):
The former And because for the most part, my rule
is you don't pay receivers because it's becoming it's becoming
the running back group and what it had been for
the longest time. Because but this is the exception of
the rule. Do you win with them or do you
win without them? Because the answer to the second one
(01:06:18):
is if you say to yourself, we take a significant
step back without this guy, then of course, yeah, pulling
up the money and pay him. And that's what Kyle
Shanahan the crew out there in San Francisco to side
with Ayuk. They said, we're not the same offense without
that guy on the field, So we need to make
sure that he's happy. We need to make sure he's
in the building, and then we can make another go
at this thing. Because I think that you look at
(01:06:39):
it and we're seeing this with the quarterback position now too.
Me and you were talking during the break about what
Dallas is going to do with Dak Prescott. Gone are
the days of, well, he's a good quarterback, so we
have to give him at least thirty five million per no.
Kirk Cousins ended that you had the team that he
was with Washington before. I was trying to remember, you know,
(01:07:00):
he obviously was somewhere before Minnesota. But Washington looked at
him and said, look, you're good, you're great, but we're
not winning because of you. We're winning with you. There's
a major difference there. And if you are, if you're
a guy that fits in that category, then I can't
give you thirty five million per like that's that's just
not the business strategy that we want to have. Receivers
now they're better than ever coming out of college. Quarterbacks
(01:07:22):
now are better than ever coming out of cass. It's
not only that, it's also too, I mean, a lot
of the concepts are already being run. The only thing
that's a difference is, hey, what do you call this
as opposed to what did we call it at Ohio State? Okay, cool,
So we're doing the same thing here. I can run that.
That's no problem. And that's why you found CJ having
the success that he had last year is because he
(01:07:43):
had the foundation already. He talked about it numerous times
of how well Ryan Day and the crew at Ohio
State had him prepared.
Speaker 1 (01:07:49):
CJ had to learn the verbage in the NFL, and
he had to learn how to get on the center
and not call off a play car he had to
learn how to actually announciate and collide. How do you
present an NFL play to NFL player?
Speaker 2 (01:08:03):
That's fine, I mean, because I can teach you how
to do that.
Speaker 1 (01:08:05):
I teach you that.
Speaker 3 (01:08:07):
I can't teach you how to be a game breaking
player like that cannot be taught. I can't teach somebody
how to run a four four forty. They either have
it or they don't. So I mean, if you've got
all of that, and you feel like you've got that
talent right there, and you can have them on a
rookie deal, why am I paying anybody when I don't
need to.
Speaker 1 (01:08:26):
So, I think it's subjective to where you are. If
I'm in San fran I'm going Look, we won a
lot of games with this core. Keep that core together.
In Kansas City, they chose the core minus tyreek Hill
because we have fifteen. He allows us to like he
(01:08:47):
can overcome the absence of Tyreek Hill. Now, had I
been in Kansas City at the time, I would have said,
do not let go of Tyreek Hill. He is unique.
He does things that no one else in the league
does and still does, which is why he's making them. Honey,
that he's making Now, if you have asked me again,
I would take Brandon a youth at thirty million dollars
a year, even with Nico Collins being signed. And there's
(01:09:08):
this thought that you can't pay everybody. Go look at
the San Francisco for the nine ers roster. Now Trent
Williams wants his money. They're going to pay Trint Williams.
They know that Trent knows that it's about how much.
Go look at the Eagles payroll, Go look at the
Dolphins payroll. You can pay You can probably pay ten
dues in the National Football League. You can't pay ten
dudes all number one money at their position, but you
(01:09:31):
can pay eight to ten dudes if you got a
quarterback that's on a rookie deal. If you believe your quarterback,
like if you've got Brock Party, they're probably choosing to
pay people because they don't have to pay Brock Purdy.
We'll see if they get pretty on top of the
market deal where we are in Houston. Because you trust CJ.
Because he's on a rookie deal, you can go get
(01:09:52):
all those other pieces. And I agree with how they
go went about building the team.
Speaker 3 (01:09:56):
The crux of everything that you just said right there
is how well do you draft? And if the answer
to that is not, well, then nothing else matters because
you don't money whip your way to a Lombardi Trophy.
You develop your way to a Lombardi Trophy. And that's
how teams like Kansas City are continuously in the position
they are. Look, number fifteen is a huge reason for that,
and you're not going to take that away from him,
(01:10:17):
nor should you because you can't. I mean, his talent
and what he does on the field is immense and
it cannot be ignored. But it's also too I brought
up Isaiah Pacheco earlier. Nobody thought Isaiah Pichecko was going
to be this guy. People wanted Clyde Edwards a lair
to be that guy. He hadn't been that job. But
then you go get a guy in the seventh round
and kind of the same deal too as well. Remember
when John Lynch got hired in San Francisco, people were like, well,
(01:10:39):
he has hired him because nobody.
Speaker 2 (01:10:41):
Else wanted to take that job.
Speaker 3 (01:10:42):
He clearly knew what he was doing, and he clearly
does know what he's doing because in addition to everything else,
they draft incredibly well.
Speaker 2 (01:10:49):
In San Francisco.
Speaker 1 (01:10:51):
They do draft well. They also developed well, which is
what makes me feel good about having Demico and Bobby
Slowick here. All right, on the other side, we will
take phone calls as well. Final segment of the show
seven one three two one two five seven ninety Fleet,
Dan Legendary, a KB and me, Yeah, y'all are crazy
(01:11:19):
If I'm interrupting nods and that drop right there, I
want to all right, let's get ready for a holiday weekend.
As this is our final segment twelve minutes from now.
Speaker 3 (01:11:27):
Mess he doesn't he doesn't get enough credit.
Speaker 1 (01:11:30):
Who nods by people that don't understand hip hop? Maybe
if you appreciate, if you know what hip hop, there's
no way you leave nads.
Speaker 2 (01:11:37):
Out of Everybody wants to talk about Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
Speaker 1 (01:11:40):
No, both of those wish they would ever be on
the same level, would not see them.
Speaker 3 (01:11:45):
I once saw an interview with ice Cube and somebody asked,
you know, hey, what do you think about the hip
hop game?
Speaker 2 (01:11:51):
Now he goes, it's whack.
Speaker 1 (01:11:53):
It's definitely different.
Speaker 2 (01:11:54):
Nobody has original ideas.
Speaker 1 (01:11:56):
It's definitely different. Like the movie industry, Marvel he's work
and keep making movies.
Speaker 3 (01:12:01):
I'm good with he there you go, Hey, can't we
put another Star Wars out there?
Speaker 1 (01:12:05):
Please?
Speaker 14 (01:12:06):
Do?
Speaker 7 (01:12:06):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (01:12:06):
By the way, didn't I see? Uh? Robert Downey Jr.
Has been cast as uh is it Doctor Evil? I think?
Is that the character doctor doctor Jill Jones?
Speaker 3 (01:12:17):
Because remember iron Man and you know, spoiler alert for
some of you out there, but iron Man died. So
now you've got to find You've got to find a
way to be able to you know, but just have
the acting chops still in the family.
Speaker 1 (01:12:29):
It's risky. Will we as the consumer the audience, will
we be able to view and hear Doctor Doom and
know that's Robert Downey Jr. In the same series, but
we know he used to be iron Man. I don't
know I've ever seen this.
Speaker 2 (01:12:43):
In a way.
Speaker 3 (01:12:44):
I mean he still could be Tony Stark, right, I
mean he he could be Tony Stark with the you know, sarcasm,
everything else that he has and and still do this character.
Speaker 2 (01:12:52):
I mean he was out of suit too.
Speaker 1 (01:12:55):
I think.
Speaker 16 (01:12:55):
And so it's a little different because we we have
a clear so iron Man one.
Speaker 1 (01:13:02):
Robert Downey Jr. Began the MC it all started from there, right,
But I think actually the halt was first. But I
understand your point. You're right, you're right, you're right.
Speaker 16 (01:13:10):
But we still have Marvel characters before that, We had
the Fantastic Four before that, we had Spider Man before that.
Speaker 1 (01:13:15):
Yeah, but it wasn't the same dude.
Speaker 16 (01:13:17):
Right, And I was just gonna say, Chris Evans played
Johnny Storm. Granted, not the same impact, not the same
icon obviously, but now he's looked at as Captain America
before anything else.
Speaker 1 (01:13:27):
That's why the show. I like it.
Speaker 16 (01:13:32):
But the movie's been out, I mean, Dead Pulling Wolverine
had been out BYuT a month.
Speaker 1 (01:13:35):
Now, go see it if you haven't already.
Speaker 16 (01:13:37):
But there they play on a twist there because they
know who you expect this actor to be. But he's
already had this role previously in the same universe technically
as but as a different character. I understand, And I
think with his talent, with already Jay's talent, he can
definitely convince you that he's Doctor Doom. What I think
(01:13:58):
I would have preferred, though, is it being a reveal
within a movie after a movie and a half or so,
as opposed to them coming out and showing it like
it's draft.
Speaker 2 (01:14:07):
Day, Like, yeah, I get the building.
Speaker 1 (01:14:10):
Yeah, you're trying to build it up.
Speaker 16 (01:14:11):
Yeah, especially because in these last couple of phases people
have kind of talked about Marvel kind of declining a
little bit, So I get why you want to ramp
that up, but I think that would have been a
much better reveal in theater seeing it for the first time.
Speaker 3 (01:14:25):
Yeah, you have to have the oblique moment at Comic Con,
so they had to have that.
Speaker 2 (01:14:29):
But it's also though too.
Speaker 3 (01:14:30):
I mean dead Pool Wolverine, you get Channing Tatum as
Gambit showing up. You get Electra, which of course she's
gonna have her own movie. Yeah, and then you get
Wesley Snipe's Blade.
Speaker 1 (01:14:40):
I saw. Yeah, they had all the cameos in that joint.
So maybe some of you watch the movies over the weekend.
I planned to watch a ton of sport as we
moved back into.
Speaker 3 (01:14:47):
And that was kind of the joke with Deadpool too,
that he would make the joke throughout the first two
that Marvel was really, you know, splurging the money of
only having a couple of the X Men available, and
then in this one they're like, all right, fine, you
get a third.
Speaker 2 (01:15:00):
We'll give you Wolverine, We'll give you a gain, but
we'll give you everybody.
Speaker 1 (01:15:02):
Else interested to take there. All right, let's do this.
As we wrap up. Dan Graziano talking about the Texans.
He's a senior NFL national reporter for ESPN. You see
him on all the shows. I'm reading an article from
him espn dot com predicting potential twenty twenty four surprises
for all thirty two teams. You scroll down here to
(01:15:22):
the Texans, and he says, don't be surprised if dot
dot dot rookie Kamari Lassiter cornerback two wins defensive Rookie
of the Year. He says the Texans coaching staff has
been impressed with Lassiter. Da Dada played at Georgia. Da
Dada likely starter his rookie season. A few people I've
(01:15:43):
spoken to in the building have told me, says Graziano unsolicited.
Mind you, about the way Lassiter has held his own
in battles he's had with Stefan Diggs during training camp. Obviously,
he's gonna be opposite of Darris Stingler Junior, establishing a
reputation across from Stingley, meaning they're probably not gonna testingly
as much. They're gonna throw at Lassater will present multiple
(01:16:06):
opportunities for interceptions. If Lapster can cash in on those ops,
that's the kind of stat that would help him win
the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. That would be
back to back years the Texans will have won defensive
Rickiet the.
Speaker 3 (01:16:20):
Yet, and you were talking about this little earlier off
air of the statistics start to kind of come into play,
because that's, you know, along with not testing well at
the combine, that was part of why he was in
the second round for this team. Because for defensive players
at Georgia, if you are going there with the sole
purpose of I'm gonna be a ten plus sack man
(01:16:40):
a year, You're probably not gonna be on the field
very often because they're going to ask you to cover,
They're going to ask you to be strong in the
run game, They're going to ask you to do all
of these different types of things that individual stars are
not necessarily permitted. On top of it all, if you're
gonna play secondary in that defense, you better be physical
and you better stick to your assignment. If you don't
(01:17:01):
do either of those things, then Kirby smart has no use.
Speaker 1 (01:17:04):
For you, Kirby. Kirby cut his teeth under Nick Saban.
Nick Saban cut his teeth with Bill Belichick. Bi Belichick
and Sabing both cut their teeth under Bill Parcells. I
can tell you you cannot play for Parcels, Sabing or
Belichick as a secondary defender, as someone that was a
product of the Parcels tree without being able to tackle.
Kamar Lassiter is here because yes he can cover. Yes,
(01:17:26):
the forty is we forty, but his short area numbers
he tested just fine. The question he had was he
didn't have enough plays on the ball. Why didn't he
take the ball away enough? Especially when you're at a
school like Georgia where you got down linemen and edge
defenders that are getting after the passer ball should be
coming out, Why don't you take away the ball? Historically,
look at Georgia recent history. They don't have corners or
(01:17:48):
brilliant players in the secondary that get drafted high, and
they don't have guys that take away the ball. It's
one of the knots on the Georgia program. Now that's
very different from lsu y'all got a whole bunch of
dudes take away the football. That's the pedigree that.
Speaker 2 (01:18:01):
It's coming back a little by little.
Speaker 3 (01:18:03):
Corey Raymond is back in the building now, so you
don't have to bring over guys that played at McNeese State,
or at Syracuse or any of these other places to
the transfer portal.
Speaker 1 (01:18:11):
He's starting to bring it back. But to your point, yes,
I would be surprised if Kamar laston. It would be
a welcome surprise. But I would be surprised if Kamar
Lassiter would win Defensive rickiet of the Year. And that's
why this shows up on the surprise list.
Speaker 3 (01:18:24):
Here's the train of thought though on that, to kind
of wrap this up, is they're not going to go
at twenty four with the amount of intensity that they
went at him for the last couple of years. That's
what the tape is out there. So fourteen is going
to be getting a lot of those footballs thrown at him.
Speaker 1 (01:18:41):
And I think forty one this dude Kaylen Bullock back there.
It would not surprise me if five years from now,
Kaylen Bullock is the better of the two. I'm just
not high on Kamari right now. It doesn't mean I'm
down on him. I'm just not as high on him
as some other people.
Speaker 3 (01:18:55):
And to your point too about Bullock, is you know
the couple of practices I was out there was that
guy that seemingly every single time you saw the ball somewhere, Hey,
there he is, Hey, funny enough, there he is again.
Speaker 1 (01:19:07):
And in the National Football League there's a premium on
being able to take away the football. Calen Bullock, ball hog.
I expect him to be, like I said, in this
starting lineup, sooner rather than later. Astro's last night real quick,
Hunter Brown, quality start from him. Twenty sixth birthday, Congratulations
to him, he looked good. Dana Brown, Dana Brown, Lord,
(01:19:28):
Joe Spotta, empty the bench played, everybody. Welcome to Houston,
Jason Hayward.
Speaker 2 (01:19:34):
Happy birthday to Joe Spotted too.
Speaker 1 (01:19:36):
Didn't know that birthday. Who else do we need to celebrate?
Last night? I saw Ozach Gazenzo, Yes, put bat on
ball or beyond for him? Who else?
Speaker 2 (01:19:47):
No, not bad on ball, looking at the ball and
not swinging.
Speaker 1 (01:19:53):
Shay Whitcomb, that third base thing not looking great, Jeremy
Pinya and all these damn errors defensively the Astros have
had here recently, Nonetheless, they do enough they win sixty
three Game one versus versus or Is versus the Royals
