quarterback Sean Salisbury, Baseball officionado Brian Olema, and just a
cool last dude of man, you're elmore Happy Friday, Good morning?
Speaker 1 (01:15):
What is it?
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Second day of August? And many things to converse about.
Obviously the scuttle butt it's so funny Texas playing the
Hall of Fame game last night, but the number one
story in the Houston from a sports standpoint, some what
are we now? That's Tuesday night? So Wednesday night Thursday night?
(01:36):
Is that right? Tuesday to Wednesday, Wednesday to Thursday Thursday.
We're approaching seventy two hours since the Kokuchie trade. Kakuchie
takes the bump the night over at minute May Park.
I presume a whole birchall you that hadn't planned on
going over. I don't want to go and see this deal.
I'm gonna say this, and I wish Kokuchi the best
because I do cheer for the Astros. Contrary to what
(01:56):
summer you believe, I do like the Astros. I respect
the hell out of the organize station. They do a
fantastic job. A lot of players I like, some people
behind the scenes I like, been very good to me,
but as a people, we generally like to see the
car wreck, and this thing with Kokucha tonight could go
real well, it could be a bleeping dumpster fire. So
(02:18):
we will see. Of course, we'll be watching. You will
be listening right here on Sports Talk seven ninety Homer
Astros Baseball. We'll get Astros on deck at six o'clock
and we'll get first pitched shortly after seven. Hall of
Fame game last night took a backseat again to Kokuchi.
Astros by the way, still sitting in first by to
(02:39):
hear their chanting chin as I keep saying. Over the
Seattle marriage. We'll talk more about that. Brian McTaggart dropped
by the show, excuse me, dropped by the station. Yesterday
the Matt Thomas Show and tags had an update on
Tuck that has a lot of people concerned. I heard
the Shawn Salisbury Show do a deep dive on that.
(03:00):
We will do so as well. That is coming up.
We will also ask sports director for Fox twenty six,
my boy will Conkle. He's at can't Ohio. Andre johnsonknops
to going into the Hall of Fame. That's eleven am
local time tomorrow. Conkle was at the game last night.
He will remain up there through the ceremony, so I'll
(03:20):
get Conko's take. He's been putting out a lot of
data on the Astros, also covering the Texans as well.
Dout to be hearing about twenty six minutes or so,
several other thoughts. Always taking your phone call seven one
three two one two five seven ninety. I saw I
haven't really been doing the Olympic update, but I saw
it coming in and get ready for the show. The
US men's national team for soccer beggetting to ask whoop
(03:42):
by Morocco. They're down three zero right now? The hell
is going on? We will pay homage to a local
Mount Rushmore icon, the great from all vows. He got
me thinking and I saw something in the chronicle. Gordy
asked me about this off air. I said, I bring
it on the air. Greg Rajan, He and I go
(04:03):
back and forth. We have a real interesting relationship. Shout
out to Greg does good job too. Mount Rushmore Houston
Sports where some home bios on here. Of course she is,
She's a bad ass, the greatest ever. Do it all right?
So last night, Conor, if you will let's get ready
to hear from Davids Mills and Dimiko. I say, it's
already in the system. So I appreciate that. Last night
(04:23):
I watched a Hall of Fame game game gets called
because of inclement weather in the area. Good news. They
did the right thing, by the way, by not resuming action.
There was no need to. We had seen enough Texans
fall twenty one seventeen to the Chicago Bears. Scored not
necessarily that important. However, there are several things to glean
(04:46):
from this. My overall thought process on the Hall of
Fame game is there was some things to light, there
were some things to be concerned about. I will start
with the rosters. Oh, and I mentioned the weather. They
did the right thing. Yeah, there was no need to
come back out there. We've seen we need to see.
No sense in, you know, having guys risk injuries on
(05:09):
and so forth. That's a rap. I disagree with Demiko
Ryans and the roster that he sent out there. Now,
Demiko doesn't give a damn, and quite frankly, nor should he.
But we should all have an issue. I'll start with
the very first one. I'm looking at the start of here.
I have the game book right here in my hand,
(05:32):
scratch second round corner. Kamari Lassiter doesn't go out there
for the Hall of Fame game. So Demiko on the
organization has just told us he's the starting corner opposite
of Dereck Stingler. I have a huge problem with that.
There is no way through ten training camp practices against
his own squad most of those days in past, that
(05:56):
he is ready to be the starting corner on his team.
He's not. And if you really listen to the whispers
from minicamp, it sounds like they're giving him the damn
job in minicamp. Camar Lassiter should have gone out there
last night. There are things he could He would have
been a better player by playing than not. This also
(06:18):
tells you something, Houston. This tells me Demiko Rimes is
very nervous about if something were to happen to Stingley
or Lassiter. They are not comfortable with that cornerback room.
I count eight eight defensive backs did not play last night,
which is why the middle of the field was wide open,
which is why there was several blown and busted coverages.
(06:39):
It's not hard, but this last of the thing, we're
gonna revisit this now. Maybe he's a stud. Perhaps he's
been going to get studrx dot com for all his
mail and needs. Maybe he's a stud. But after ten
practices at this level, he's not ready to go out
there and start right now. He hadn't earned that. Some
(07:01):
other folks surprised me. They would scratch Brevin Jordan, Damian Pierce.
Henry told, Told, doesn't go out there them? I know
some to toe. Henry told Told, who's the starting Sam
linebacker for the team. Played in fourteen games last year,
(07:21):
starting six of them. Touto hadn't played enough football. Okay,
they didn't play tang deal. I thought maybe there was
a chance I would have liked them seeing Tank. All right,
he didn't go out there. I get it, injury history,
not a big deal. Defensive tackle Tim Settle, he didn't go.
So I'm looking at who they did send out there,
(07:43):
and again there's some positives that took place, but the
big conversation based on who out there. And we'll start
here with with this quarterback scenario. It didn't surprise me
that they sent out Davis Mills to be quarterback to
the starter. Obviously CJ wasn't gonna play. I thought, quite frankly,
(08:06):
I thought Davis Mills looked pretty damn good. Ten of thirteen,
one hundred and two yards a tud No Picks passer
rating one twenty four point five. Yeah, there's some things
he's gonna get somebody hurt from a starting standpoint if
he doesn't get the ball down. Shout out to you,
Ben Skeronic for going up there, grabbing the ball, doing
what you gotta do to make a play. But Davis
(08:30):
Mills and I put this out on social during the game.
Demko and them lie about the depth chart because they
told us last year that Davids Mills was quarterback too.
He was in camp, he was through the preseason, he
was when you got into the regular season until somebody
actually had to go in there when CJ couldn't play,
and then they put in Case Kennon. Now, Case didn't
(08:52):
look bad last night. Some would say he looked better
than Davis. I don't know that I share that sentiment.
Seven or nine from kse eight yards he was sacked.
He also had a touchdown passer rating better than Davis
Mills one thirty nine point eight. Now I would say
Case were going again. Case went up against lesser backups.
(09:13):
But Case has played enough football. I'm not really worried
about him, meaning I would choose Davis to be the backup.
But it's really like, what do we believe the Miko?
What do we believe the Miko would do? If CJ,
for whatever reason, was out Game one at the Coats,
who do you think you would put out there? I
(09:34):
think Davis Mills did enough last night to be the
second string quarterback. Now I'm not gonna go to the
rest of the show talking about second stringers. It's just
where I wanted to start. Some guys that were bright
spots as I go to Northfleet's notebook. The second story
for me was this kickoff return deal. Gordy posted something
(09:56):
that he wasn't a big fan of it. I quote
tweeted Gordy. I thought it was okay, it just looks weird.
I thought it was all right. I think players will
adjust and it'll be fine. Remember the two point conversion
was a thing. What do you mean two point conversions? Oh,
then you can't. You can't form a wedge on kickoff return.
(10:18):
Players adjusted, You will adjust.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
Now.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
The thing about the kickoff rule that I found the
most creepy is. If it's a windy day or whatever's
going on, you can call somebody in to hold the
football to kick it off. But then during the kickoff
that player has the runoff and what the hell are
we doing this in the hockey this's in then exchange.
What do you call that, Connor? When they do the
shift change this, yeah, this in the damn line change.
(10:43):
But the dude's running off the fields. Weird. Oh the
Unis and I'm looking at the clock, will continue talking
this on the other side. The Unis, I thought looked
pretty sweet, Connor. The Unis thumbs up on the Texans
unions last night.
Speaker 6 (11:00):
Like you said, it's just different, but I like to
I think they look all right.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
Uh the blue is still a little too bluish black
for me. I'd like it if it was more blue.
But the Chicago Bears kind of got the same thing.
They got that dark, dark navy, that deep steal. So
in terms of getting started, we do have some injury
notes that we will get to on the other side
as well. I have gotten to the quarterback piece we
(11:25):
were here from, said quarterback Davis Min's I also want
to hear from Dimico on the other side, let's open
up the phone lines. I have tons of other material
to get here before we get to Will Kunklem at
ten thirty seven one three, two, one two five seven
ninety did you watch the Hall of Fame game last night?
Your takeaways? We'll get that address right here, Will Real
Texas Talk and listen Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
Ninety do it again, Onto done.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Next tarter, Now what's next?
Speaker 7 (11:54):
As more of Next Up continues now on Sports Talk
seven ninety Home your World Champion Houston Astros Hot.
Speaker 8 (12:07):
It's a great opportunity to go out there and play
live football, I think. I mean, we've been grinding so
far during camp and it's a battle each and every
day going against our own guys, So it's fun to
actually go out there and play a different opponent, different scheme,
and really see how the hard work were putting en
pays off. Obviously, we still a long way to go,
(12:29):
but I thought the guys that stepped up today played
well and executed their job.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Quarterback two for now Davis Mills post game twenty one seventeen,
in a game that was called early due to implement
and severe weather in the area, Canton, Ohio, Davis Mills
had himself a day look pretty good. Uh, there are
a couple of things here I'm thinking about you. You're
likely God. I hope this doesn't happen. Of course we
(12:57):
all do. But the nature of the football league say
you're gonna need your backup at some part. I would
like to think Davis will be better, healthy, offensive line,
more weapons, second year under slow it better coaching. I'd
like to think he's gonna be better. And if he is,
maybe Caserio can get something for him should they elect
(13:17):
to deal him, perhaps before the deadline. All right, welcome
back into the show. We'll continue doing North Least Notebook
Hall of Fame game reaction to the Texans opening up
the preseason twenty twenty four Up in Canton, Ohio seven
one three two one two five seven ninety. Somebody mentioned
(13:38):
to me, staying, why are you all up in your
arms about Kamari Lassa to not playing. You've been hating
on Lassa since he came. You know, the guys need
an off. The first of all, he's not a VET.
He hadn't proven a damn thing. That's number one. Number two.
The Texas practice schedule. The Texans practice on Tuesday. They
(13:58):
were off on Wednesday to try They played the game
last night. They're off today. They will attend as a
as an organization the Hall of Fame in shrimate ceremony
on Saturday. That's four days off Sunday, August fourth, right now,
a scheduled day off. That means Kamar Lasta will have
played football one, two, three, four or five days one
(14:21):
day out of five. I'm sorry during training camp that's
a problem for me. Now. On the other hand, I
don't know if y'all saw the same game. I watch
Kaitlin Bullock, the safety brother was flying around rocking that
jersey forty one. And if Wex, as my witness, Adam J. Wex,
(14:41):
looked one half of the A team, they do a
fantastic job for us. In the afternoon, Wex and I
did the Draft show the second day. At the draft show,
obviously that the Texas didn't have a first round pick,
and when they selected Kamar lasted or Wex will tell you,
I wasn't really blown away. I thought they could have
gone some other options. When they got to Kaylyn Bullock
probably would have gone with Siren Steel out of Michigan.
(15:04):
But I understood the traits that Kaylen Bullock brings to
the team long rangey sen center fielder. But what he
showed last night was something that he didn't show consistently
in college. That is a willingness to get down into
the alley and tackle against the run. He was a
sure tackling open field. He got down in there and
(15:25):
put his shoulder some people, forcing a fumble. Now we
got to do something about this premature celebration, Like the
play is still going on. Brody heads up, Ricky mistake. Okay,
I ain't gonna vilify him for that, but I thought
Kaylyn Bullock was outstanding, surprisingly physical given his physique. All right,
Uh so I'm thinking I'm watching Kaylyn Bullock and I'm going, huh,
(15:49):
last of that could have given me some show me something.
The over reacting stand, there's still three preseason games to go.
You get better or you get worse every day with
four off days out of five. Ask yourself if you
believe Kamari Lastad got better yesterday. I do not. Caitlyn
bulld did some other storylines? Do do? Do? Okay, let
(16:13):
me go and get this one out the way. Gordon
and I sat in here and Gordy's like stand oh
so this is when the Joe Mixon news came out, staying, Uh,
Cam Akers a guy recovering from a ruptured achilles in
both legs over the last four years. That's two achilles
over the last four seasons. He's in camp. I said, Gordon,
(16:34):
There's no way in hell cam Akers is making this team.
It's a camp body. Uh who did I see last night?
Greg Rosenthal does a good job. He's a respect what
is he at two hundred and forty eight thousand followers
on social He does a good job covering the league.
Greg Rosenthal, I believe he contributes to the NFL dot com.
(16:57):
He says, Camacers is made in this team. People. Cam
Makers looked explosive. Cam Acers looked definitive in his runs,
Cam Make he looked like a veteran that had been
there before. But the body is not betraying him at
this point, Cam Makes. Look now, I still need to
(17:21):
see some more. Before I started talking about him making
the team, Demiko was asked about cam Akers. Miko, let
me hear this, cam Makers and what you saw? Demiko too?
Speaker 1 (17:29):
Maybe Cam made a couple of nice plays.
Speaker 9 (17:31):
I think everybody saw the plays that cam made running
the football and also with the receiving touchdown.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
Cam has a.
Speaker 9 (17:38):
Very just savvy way of slipping off of tacklers making plays.
So I liked where Cam was tonight and he show
showed some playmaking ability which he has shown in the past.
Is just a matter of Cam continue to get reps
and build up of what he's done.
Speaker 10 (17:53):
Now, I'm not surprised from Cam.
Speaker 9 (17:54):
He's done it and the past done it for a
long time, so I'm not surprised by what he's done.
It's all about him just getting healthy, getting his feet
back under him, getting back in shape. But he has
to play making ability. Showed that really early in his career.
It's a matter of him just getting the opportunity.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
Demiko rans on the performance of Cam Acres. Now, obviously
small sample size. Acres had five carries thirteen yards. That's
two point six per the touchdown reception four yards. Kind
of a busted coverage case. Keenan found them all right.
Touchdown I wanted to see when we found out Damian
(18:31):
Pierce was not going to practice, who was going to
be essentially running back three, they decided to go with
Darrey A Goombiwalle and then after that was JJ Taylor
and then you got to cam Acres. We'll have to
watch what would that running back rotation look like moving
forward given what cam Akers put on tape. By the way,
(18:53):
darray of goombawle three carries fourteen yards. That's four point
seven per I'll take that. All right. Let's get to
these wide receivers. Let's have some fun. I thought Xavier
Hutchinson was excellent last night. Six targets caught, five fifty
six yards, average eleven per reception. Nice do y'all understand
(19:14):
now some things from being scronck Ben Skronick, I thought, again,
hell of a play making Davis Mills look good. Skronick
is going to be a utility piece on this team.
I still think he makes the roster. A guy that
I was disappointed about. Just two targets for John Metchi
(19:35):
the third he caught one of them for four yards.
That's it. I believe Xavier Hutchison and Metcha are fighting
for the final wide receiver spot. Call me crazy. I
think Steven Simms makes it just because he's the kickoff returner. Now,
if they get confidence in hutch to return kicks, then
(19:57):
maybe hutch goes back there. I just don't think there's
a world with Stephen Simms doesn't make this team healthy.
Of course, right now, I'd have to say Hutch has
the edge on match. They're both draft picks by Caserio.
We know Mitchi's story. I cheer for Mitch like the
young man a lot had a one on one with
him last year in private, just talking about the game,
(20:19):
and you know how he was doing, recovering the whole thing,
like the kid who else do good things? Out of
cast over fourth round pick out of Ohio State. I
saw again, like what somebody does in school, the moment
you step out there with grown men on Sunday, all
that what I did in school goes out the window.
(20:40):
It's a different game Saturday to Sunday. You'll hear me
say that over and over if you new to the station,
new to the show. When we get into the fall,
A whole bunch of guys ball on Saturday can't play
on Sunday. Whole bunch of dudes you ain't never heard
of on Saturday better suited for Sunday. It's a weird
dynamic cased over did some good things. What is he
(21:01):
caught two balls twenty six yards? What he average thirteen
per three attempts. I was actually more proud at the
grit that he showed. He took a shot to the
ribs down for a second, brother, got up, dusted itself off,
kept it pushing. I was happy that Stove was in there.
Let me also brag on a couple other people, the
big uglyes up front. So of course Lammy Tomsel doesn't go.
(21:23):
That means rookie. At least one of the rookie second
round picks had to play yesterday. Blake Fisher, he manned
the left side. I saw good things out of him.
He did not look overwhelmed. That look. It did not
look like the moment was too big for him. We
gotta get him ready to be the swing tackle, especially
(21:44):
with Charlie Heck currently being injured. Oh there's number seventy six,
Kenyon Green, and he was beside center Juice Scruggs. I
want to see more of that combo. They should play
as much football as humanly possible together, both of them. Overall,
for both Davis Mills and for Case, the pocket was good.
(22:06):
The Bears didn't really have a rush. Who was at
that that's read over there at the right guard and
there's Nick Broker over there at right tackle. So that's
just oh defensively. And Derek Barnett veteran, he went out there.
I saw Kurt Heinez do a couple things. I am
(22:29):
very concerned about this line backing room. That's what it
looks like. Without Aziz as Shy and Christian Harris. The
Bears were running the ball anytime they wanted to. Khalil
Herbert eight point eight yards of carry, Felton four point seven,
Johnson four yards of carry. I mean, the Miko's got
(22:50):
to be disappointed when he looks at that tape this morning. Now,
some of you will tell me, stand there you go
overreacting again, being too emotional. I can hear it now,
staying we were going up against the backups. No, no, no,
it's our backups versus their backups. It is relative. My
friends and their backups pushed hours around their offensive people,
(23:14):
pushed hours around. Colin Johnson out there, tight end form
a long horn, dunking on people. What did he have?
I know we got a break. Colin Johnson for the
Bears six targets, three receptions, fifty six yards and two touchdowns,
probably the best player on the field. All right, we'll
ask Will Concle Fox twenty six news director. He's live
(23:36):
in Canton right now. He would join us on the
other side. We will continue talking Hall of Fame Game.
Taking your phone calls on the other side of Kuncle
seven one three, two, one two five, seven ninety your
home in Houston.
Speaker 4 (23:46):
Sports next stop that next and back up now down
door pleets and Chris gordyons next up on Sports Talk
seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (24:00):
Connor trying to get me started. That's to night, Connor,
don't get me turned out right. Welcome back in the
next half an hour. Way into the show, Fleet flying solo.
Gordon's in the building, but he's somewhere doing the things
that Gordy does when he's not again with me. Appreciate
all of you hanging out again. We'll be with you
to twelve. New to the station, New to the show,
Texans Fall twenty one seventeen up in Canton, Ohio at
(24:21):
the Hall of Fame Game for more analysis and to
get some intail on what took place last night. Inclement
weather and all news director, excuse me, sports director over
at Fox twenty six. That's the great Will Cuncle. You
see his work on social media. You see his handsome
face on Fox twenty six will good morning. Appreciate you
(24:43):
rocking with us?
Speaker 6 (24:43):
Man?
Speaker 2 (24:43):
How you feel my.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
Man, I'm feeling good.
Speaker 10 (24:46):
I'm on the treadmill going up the incline at twelve degrees.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
I slowed down a little bit for you.
Speaker 6 (24:51):
So you got all my brothers.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
You know what? Really you do have like a you
look like a piloton instructor. If you met somebody and
you were like, yeah, I'm a piloton to try, I
would totally believe you. So it does surprise man here.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
I wish they had that Pelly here.
Speaker 2 (25:06):
I wish dudes would have played football last night like
Kamara Lassiter, like Henry told Toa, like Brevin Jordan, maybe
even a snap snip excuse me of Damian Peers. Were
you okay with Demiko Rans not playing eight dbs, including
young Lassater?
Speaker 10 (25:24):
I wanted to see him selfishly, I'm okay with it
because it's the extra game.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
So they still have three laughs.
Speaker 10 (25:29):
Like if we didn't have the Hall of Fame game,
would you be you wouldn't really have the room to
be so upset?
Speaker 6 (25:35):
Right, So what I do?
Speaker 2 (25:36):
So all right with it?
Speaker 10 (25:39):
What is radio without that emotion, not like I wanted
to see him, for sure, but I think three games
to be played and join practices against the Rams, there
should be plenty of time to see what Lasser.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
Can or can't do and then work on it from there.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
All right, the quarterback room, Davis looked all right. Hey,
if you had to select quarterback two for this team
right now through three quarters of a Hall of Fame game,
who would be quarterback two if they had to go
play a real game tonight?
Speaker 10 (26:13):
I mean, all things being equal contract wise in situation,
I think no doubt is Davis Millsley. He controlled the offense,
he looked poised, he's had things slowed.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
Down, and he did his job. Now.
Speaker 10 (26:23):
I'm sure we'll get to this, but listen, the defenses
were blown assignments everywhere, Like dudes were running open all
night long from both sides of the ball.
Speaker 1 (26:33):
So Davis looked good. Yes, At the same time, he.
Speaker 10 (26:36):
Probably looks better because of blown assignments by the Bears.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
Fair point by you. I like to look at it
like I look at it relative. It's our backup versus
their backups. Who has the better two than threes? Into
some cases for US Chicago looked a little bit better
than the Texans last night. Areas. Oh you know, let's
continue to celebrate some folks. I thought the pocket was there.
(27:02):
I thought some skill position players stepped up. What jumped
out at you other than the quarterback play from the
skills on the offensive side of the ball.
Speaker 10 (27:11):
I know Kenyan Green wrapped himself well, I mean I
don't think I don't know, you know, I don't think
the Bears are throwing the kitchen sink at him for sure,
and he obviously wasn't facing the best you know, pass
rushers that he's going to face. But I thought he
handled himself well. He moves some bodies in the run game,
he did well in the past game.
Speaker 1 (27:30):
He dropped his feet.
Speaker 10 (27:31):
I watched his feet actually specifically one play, and he
had good footwork, kept the guy in front of him
and created a clean pocket. So I thought Kenyan Green
really stood out.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
Is cam Akers gonna make this team? And why?
Speaker 10 (27:47):
Man? If he does, I'd like where because Dario and
Goomba Walle provides a lot for this team, and.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
We know they can't they trust I'm sorry for anywe you.
Speaker 1 (27:58):
Go ahead, No, you're good, you know you're right.
Speaker 10 (28:00):
So like and they trust dr they know what you're
gonna get from Dari And then Damian Pierce. It's all
about Damian Piers. Do they think he can finally figure
the system out or not? And then obviously Joe mix
it and so like as cam Aker is gonna be
your three third string four string guy, I don't know
he's gonna be in the league. Got three what he
put on tape last night? And that's what such a
(28:21):
bummer is last night. There's a lot of dudes that
want to put something on tape that don't have tape,
that didn't get the opportunity because of the weather.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
Very fair point by you. Was that a real thing?
I haven't asked you about that yet. Did you kind
of see that coming? It sounds like it was in
the area, like Joe Buck and Troy when the booth saying, guys,
we can see it in the distance from our boot,
there's a problem coming. How did it feel real time
there on the grounds.
Speaker 10 (28:44):
No, so we didn't really know it was as imminent
and as widespread and bad as it really was. We
knew that there was gonna be potentially some rain. We
thought maybe it was gonna skirt north and then all
of a sudden it was like damn. And then once
it was here because there there was actually a lightning flash.
I don't think it was I don't know if it
hit the ground versus a heat lightning flash, and they
played through it and they continued.
Speaker 1 (29:04):
And then there was another one.
Speaker 6 (29:04):
Then that's when they finally called it.
Speaker 10 (29:06):
So I think they were trying to hope that they
were gonna be good, and then all of a sudden
it wasn't. And then like looking at the radar, it
was all around and so that game wasn't going to
restart the earliest at midnight Eastern, So there was just.
Speaker 2 (29:17):
No had no point in that. No, they did the
right thing about calling the game and wrapping it up there. Uh,
those final two wide receiver positions, I'm gonna lump in
some names, Metchie Hutchinson, Steven sam Skronic. I think the
first four if you include Nora Brown in that mix,
which I think it's safe to do. How do you
(29:39):
think this thing plays out? What have you seen through
ten training camp practices and the three quarters of a
Hall of Fame game at the wide received position to
back end of that room.
Speaker 10 (29:48):
So let's look at training camp and what we've talked
about there. First, John Metchi has shown explosive speed, he
looks as healthy as he has he's ever been, and
then he's nowhere to be found in the Hall of
Hutchinson awesome in the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
Game.
Speaker 10 (30:03):
Clearly, Stephen Sims, I do not think he's gonna make
this team.
Speaker 1 (30:07):
So I'm yeah, I don't.
Speaker 10 (30:09):
Know, like where the spot is for him, and I
don't know where the spot is for John Matchi either.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
So you think hutch is in in your mind Hutches.
Speaker 10 (30:20):
I like schronic I can understand why they wouldn't go
with him, but I like Schronick because of position versatility.
Dimiko keeps talking about it, and that dude plays football.
He will do anything to be on the field, and
he's capable of doing anything on the field. And you
want athletes on your team because guys are gonna get hurt.
You just don't know where they're gonna get hurt and
(30:41):
who it's gonna be.
Speaker 1 (30:42):
So if you have a guy.
Speaker 10 (30:43):
That can plug and fill here and there, especially within
a game, and make adjustments in game, that's the guy
you want. You want one or two of those, and
then another guy's Darry You saw him do that as
a damn kicker, Like that's invaluable.
Speaker 1 (30:55):
They lose that game if he's not that guy.
Speaker 2 (30:57):
No question about it. Absolutely I want to do this.
Have not asked you about the kickoff on the kickoff
returns field level real time? I know obviously we're looking
at it on the screen. What do you think about it?
What are people saying now that we've seen one actual
NFL game with the new kickoff rules?
Speaker 10 (31:18):
Most of the people I talked to last night at
the stadium were just unsure, like there was like not
really sure, and you didn't see a lot of it
and it's still preseason, so you're not really sure what
you're getting.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
My personal view was that.
Speaker 10 (31:31):
It clearly it took the speed out of the play,
like they're the running down the full field and then
the ball carrier with a full head of steam is
not there and that's the intent. So job well done
by the NFL to get that out of the game,
because that was their intention. Whether you wanted it out
or not, that's up to you individually, but that was
a mission accomplished by the NFL because that's what they wanted.
(31:54):
I think it's going to take a little bit of adjustment.
I think it's going to be interesting to see how
the blocking schemes play out over time when we get
to the regular season, because like teams aren't gonna show
the breakout blocking scheme that they might have in their
pockets in the preseason game. You're gonna wait until you
see that in the regular season and force teams to
adjust when it matters.
Speaker 2 (32:16):
All right, Will Kunkle, sports director over at Fox twenty six,
We'll get you out of here on this one. I
know you're hanging out up in Canton today Tomorrow at
eleven am local time. Andre Johnson's going to go shopping. Actually,
he's gonna be gifted a really nice jacket. We've seen
him open the box already, but he's gonna put it on.
What do you expect? We will see what does the
(32:37):
gravity of this mean for this current team for Demiko
The camera paying to Dimko's face as Andre was introduced
last night. Just your overview of what this weekend, now
that the game has been played, means for the organization
in the city.
Speaker 10 (32:53):
Man, I don't know if I can overstate it, and
I don't mean that in a hyperbolic I'm drinking the
kool aid.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
Type of way.
Speaker 10 (33:00):
But this is one of the greatest players we've ever
seen in the NFL. He represented the city of Houston
so well, and he's the first Texan in the history
of their franchise to get into the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 6 (33:13):
And it's the dude that you would want.
Speaker 10 (33:15):
And it's not posthumous and I don't you know, I
don't mean that in a weird way, but you get
to see him there in the moment and see it.
He's such a Stolich dude that he doesn't respond to
so much. That's why that fight with Corny Finigan was
like so crazy and the fans loved it, and he
got a standing ovation at the Rockets game afterwards because
it just was so out of character and everyone's like, hell, yeah,
(33:37):
that's my guy, that's my dude from my team, rep
in my city. And it's the same thing here, like
this is their moment. They've never had this moment. Every
team's got that moment for the most part outside of
the Texans, So they have this moment. Is so big
for the city, it's so big for the franchise. It
puts him on the map and another way to put
a stamp on this franchise in the league after making
(33:59):
the playoff.
Speaker 1 (34:00):
So now having seen this shout and having these.
Speaker 10 (34:01):
Expectations, have it all come together in that perfect storm
of a recipe I think is even better. Like they're
not the laughing stock of the NFL. I was up
here for Sam Mills with the Panthers. Yep, the Panthers
were a bad team during that time, so there just
wasn't that type of hype around the organization. They didn't
play in the Hall of Fame game. They were the
Texans were here playing in the Hall of Fame game.
(34:23):
All that hype is real and it's all coming together
in such a cool time, not only for Andre in
the franchise, but the city as well.
Speaker 2 (34:30):
That is the voice of the great Will Conco kind
enough to join us from a treadmill somewhere in Ohio.
Make sure you follow Will councle. He does a great
job over at Fox twenty six. Of course he is
at will k U n K E L Fox. Well,
We appreciated.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
Brother.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
Will be following me to see what happens during the
ceremony tomorrow morning, man be will say travels.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
Back, Oh Man, God bless thanks brother.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
Always take here, Will Conkle again, Fox twenty six Sports Director.
Let's step aside, let us come back some other NFL
nuggets to get to and Houston, I need your help.
Let's do a Mount Rushmore, our lifetime Mount Rushmore Houston Sports.
There's somebody that has to be added to this mix.
And I don't know if prior to this week that
(35:17):
would have been the case. Seven one three, two one
two five seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (35:22):
Next up continues on your phone.
Speaker 7 (35:27):
Listen to Sports Talk seven ninety on any device with
our free iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
Let's wrap up our one on a Monday thanks to
Will Cuncle, Fox twenty six Sports director live in cat In, Ohio.
Was he as Andre Johnson eleven am tomorrow morning goes
into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Stand Northfleet. Here
at stand sportsman on social My radio partner at Chris
Gordy not here with me as he's taken care of
(35:55):
other matters here in the building. There's at Connedy McGovern.
Appreciate him. Ready follow on the station. Of course, we
are at Sports Talk seven to ninety. But I wanted
to say something Will oh I didn't get a chance
to ask Will councle about you, say Kakuchi who takes
the maund tonight he gets the ball on the bump
first game in the Astros unit Tampa Bay Rays in
(36:18):
town for three game set. We will have that for
you throughout the course of the afternoon and obviously into
the evening where Astro's on deck at six and then
we'll get first pitch shortly after seven. Robert Ford, Steve
Sparks per yus you while all right, as we'll conkle
a lot again about the Hall of Fame game last night.
Many of you don't care about the score. It was
(36:39):
good to see football on TV again. The kickoff rules
are what they are. I think we will grow to
accept it. It's not gonna be that big a deal.
Starters didn't play on both sides. I was shocked at
some of the people that did not play. Brevin Jordan,
Kamari Lassiter, Damian Pierce to some extent, Henry Told, Told
(37:00):
defensive tackle Tim Settle surprising. There were some standout performances.
Davis Mills and case Keenum. Those guys have started a
lot of regular season football games. Cases case and cases
case in cases situation, he has started a lot of
playoff games. But I thought Xavier Hutchinson was awesome. I
(37:22):
thought that the offensive line, Blake Fisher, Kenyon Green, Juice
Rugs on that left side. That's what I expected to
look like versus backups. And we may have something here
with Cam Akers and his two previously ruptured achilles. All right,
So that is that part speaking of injuries as it
impacts a former Texan. If you have not seen this already,
(37:46):
news out of Nashville yesterday afternoon, late afternoon Toron Davenport
ESPN dot com covers the Titans Nuke Hopkins suffered a
knee injury during practice recently. Sources confirmed the ESPN initial.
The initial diagnosis suggests a star wide receiver will miss
(38:06):
four to six weeks with a knee, wearing a visible
rap on his left leg during an individual period early
in Titan's practice Wednesday. And of course there's a video
also on the injury front. Sent a couple of shock
waves around the AFC for sure. Obviously that impacts the
(38:28):
Houston Texans, though they don't play the Chargers this year.
Adam Shefter posted yesterday afternoon, Chargers announced that Justin Herbert
was diagnosed with an injury to his planner Fascia in
his right foot. Per the team doctors have recommended approximately
two weeks in a boot followed by a graduated return
(38:50):
to play protocol, with the expectation that he will be
ready for the start of the regular season. End quote.
So we'll see what's going on. Not mad at Dimiko
Rans for not playing CJ. It's no need for CJ
to go out there. Many of us want them to
be bubble wrapped as we get into the regular preseason
(39:11):
before we go up to Indianapolis Week one. So NFL wise,
the only other thing that I saw that may be
of some interest is and where is this guy one
of these judges And I'm reading Mike Florio. I don't
know why I can't see the guy's name right now,
but essentially a judge has overruled the jury verdict behind
(39:36):
this NFL Sunday ticket. Many of you listening purchased that,
and essentially this judge came in and said, nope, Judge
Philip Goutier is with the stroke of a pen is
transferring fourteen point one billion back to the pockets of
the NFL owners. The original try awarded the public. You
(40:04):
all four point seven billion dollars and there's some stipulation
that even though that's the monetary award, there's a formula
where you multiply that and that's how you get to
the fourteen billion. Essentially, if you read the the five
prints something, you don't give a damn about that. I
understand why there's some legal mumbo jumbo going in here
where the billable hours are adding up. And essentially it
(40:25):
looks like the people that are hot with the direct
Sunday ticket in this class action lawsuit, they may seek
other representation. So you had some money coming back to
your pocket. Now you don't real quick, Let's grab this
phone call Jacob on the north side of Houston. I'm
out of time a little bit, but I did tease
and we can think about this and get into an
(40:46):
in eleven o'clock hour, the current Mount Rushmore of Houston Sports.
Who are your ford, Jacob.
Speaker 11 (40:53):
Karrent Well, I was just saying all time for I
got Eeryl Campbell.
Speaker 1 (41:00):
Warn move.
Speaker 11 (41:01):
Just imagine if Warren and had to go to Canada
and play quartum I'm gonna be I get okay uh
uh Nolan Ryan a lodgah one and honorable mentioned Clyde.
I gotta go with Clyde and A tonight, just gonna
you know, Kuchi, go start the Japanine shytlight Monk, you.
Speaker 2 (41:20):
Gonna tell it up.
Speaker 1 (41:21):
You're gonna have under two two E RI.
Speaker 2 (41:24):
I'll holler at you on Monday playoff under two e
r RA. I'm glad you brought up Kokuchi because I
gotta get to this. On the other side, he gets
the ball tonight, and uh, there are some folks that
would like some of us like myself that are not
fans of the trade to reconsider. I read something and
I saw something or heard something I should say and
(41:45):
I will pose that to you. On the other side,
some of us are hoping that Kokuchie can be a
stud in an Astros uniform like many before him that
have come over and gotten with this staff and organization
have been the best versions of themselves. To be the
best version of yourself when it comes to take care
of Mama. Go to get studarrex dot com a local, reliable,
(42:07):
discrete solution for your male performance needs. If you know
what I mean. They kicked off the ball last night.
Guys and the Astros have a new picture over there,
a new starter at that you know you're not gonna
have the time to entertain your lady or your spouse
as you used to. That mean we got to be
efficient and maximize that time. And you want to be
(42:29):
able to show up and show out when the opportunity arises.
Maybe you want to keep it discreete they'll deliver within
a fifty mile radius. You don't have to pull up
on the location here inside the loop off of the
Kdie Freeway. Whatever the situation calls for. Whatther you need
to perform like a stallion one of the solutions that
one of the compounds that I recommend you take a
(42:50):
look at a compound offering that you can take even
on a full stomach. And just like that, we're ready
to roll for more. Intael go to get start ourrex
dot com. Tell them stan Fleet said, what up? Sent
you over there to check out the good people at
get start orex dot com. Now what's next?
Speaker 1 (43:10):
Next stop?
Speaker 4 (43:11):
It's the next man off, next stop.
Speaker 2 (43:13):
The next step, take the next step.
Speaker 10 (43:15):
Next up stop, next next up.
Speaker 1 (43:18):
This team wants to be next.
Speaker 4 (43:21):
This is next up with Tad Northfleeten Chris Gordy.
Speaker 5 (43:26):
Let's see what's next next.
Speaker 2 (43:28):
Next final hour of the week here on Sports Talk
seven ninety studios. We in the Galleria area, West Loops
South to be precise, Good morning all of you on
a Friday. Appreciate you staying locked with us from the
Shaw Saisbury Show here in the next up until noon,
we will hand you off to the Matt Thomas Show
and then shortly thereafter the a team that gets us
(43:49):
into Astros Baseball tonight where we will see the Astros
debut of the polarizing you say Kakuchi Japanese brother leave
in the Toronto Blue Jays to put on the Astros
Orange and Blue. New to the station, New to the show.
Good morning to you, Welcome to Houston's best city in America.
Tell my people that each and every day stand Northfleet
(44:11):
me at stand sportsman on social My radio partner Chris Gordy,
he's in, but he's out today. There's Conneddie mcgoffn. Appreciate him.
You know he's he's a wizard. He's very astute when
it comes to our production and program the needs. If
you missed the first hour of the show, you go back.
It's readily available for you and it's free. Not just
(44:33):
the iHeartRadio app but also Sports seven ninety dot com.
In the first out, we talked a lot about the
Texans losing the Hall of Fame game last night, game
called due to severe weather in the Canton, Ohio area.
There was some good, some good, there was some things
not so good. We talked to Will Cuncle, sports director
Fox twenty six. You see his face. My brother does
(44:53):
a good job. You hear his voice as well, he
joins us. Occasionally you can find that to boot. I'll
take some punk as well as we start unpacking this
the last third of the season. The Astro still find
themselves in first place in the AL West, slightly ahead
(45:14):
of the Seattle Mariners. And here we go. Let me see,
where's my schedule. I gotta make sure I see my stuff.
Three games with Tampa before they go on the road.
So these three games over the weekend wrap up this
nine game homestand then they go on the road for
another nine games prior to coming back two weeks from today.
(45:36):
We will see or tonight the Chicago White Sox will
be in Tampa, all right, Tampa staying what are they?
Tampa is in the most competitive division in Major League Baseball,
the AL East. They are two games above five hundred.
They did sell off some pieces at the deadline. They
(45:57):
also retain somebody that the ass jees. We're in on
Yandhyds over there at first Base. We'll talk some more
about that, but for here and now, the conversation around
the city continues to be you say Kokuchi and how
we should feel about the trade. I saw something and
(46:20):
let me hear from Dana Brown again, because some of
us we heard this for some of you, some of
you have not. This is Dana Brown on the Seawan
Salisbury Show the Wednesday morning after acquiring you say Kokuchi
on Tuesday before the deadline, or that may have been
on Monday before Tuesday. Nonetheless, he came by to Sean
Salisbury Show on Wednesday. All right, Dana Brown, tell me
(46:42):
again what are we missing about this Kakuchi edition and
what it costs? Again him?
Speaker 12 (46:47):
Well, in terms of what are they missing about him?
You know, ultimately, you know, when you get a guy
like this, it's very important to a rotation. When you
get a guy you know who can.
Speaker 3 (46:59):
Give you winnings, he could get strikeouts when he needs strikeouts,
and the fact that he has power stuff, you know,
those those those are guys that you want in your organization,
particularly when you're when you're making a run for the
division and you're making a run for the postseason and
you're making you're trying to go deep back into the postseason.
(47:20):
So you know this guy, Uh, you can't always go
on on run average. You know, swinging miss is a.
Speaker 12 (47:28):
Big part of what we do. You know, we have
a really good defense. So I know our defense is
really good, and so you can't always go on run average.
It's not the it's not the telltale. You know. The
telltale is how much swing a miss is you're getting.
You know, is he giving you innings? And and can
you hand him the baseball every five days? That's very
(47:48):
important for the course of uh, you know, finishing out
of season.
Speaker 2 (47:54):
Gentleman er Dana Brown on the Seawan Salisbury Show on
Wednesday for his weekly He joined Sean and Brian and
Emmanuel at nine thirty. Okay, so I'm at the point
in this deal as we near seventy two hours since
this has gone down, or are we at seventy two
hours now? Nonetheless, there's nothing we can do about it.
(48:17):
He's on the roster. It is what it is. So
the question I post for you. We'll open up the
phone lines. Cond of people want to talk some more
Kokuchi and he's going Who's he going up against? Night?
Some kid I hadn't heard of over here. He's going
up against Shane Boz. It's spelled b a Z, but
it's like Wizard of Oz shamee Boz. He's owing one.
Is Shane Boz with a three point sixty six e
(48:39):
al ray one point four to two whip Brother's only
logged just over nineteen and two thirds innings on the season,
allowing nineteen hits, nineteen strikeouts, walking nine, and allowing two homers.
So he's gonna go up against Uh, you say Kakuchi,
And we know the numbers, and I'm not gonna necessary
(49:00):
get into those here. I will unpack a story that
I saw on cbssports dot com seven three, two on
two five some ninety. Are y'all going to see this tonight?
I mean all of us will be watching, But are
you going over to the ballpark or your thoughts watching
the game? Somebody just called in, uh, before we came
into the second half of this show to end the
(49:21):
previous segment, somebody said, Kakuchi is gonna go out there.
What do you say, Connor A below two E LRA
tonight for Kakuchi? Damn, I don't know about that. Maybe
maybe I read something in the chronicle that said, uh,
the pitching staff they have a plan for Kakuchi and
maybe they can tinkle with some things. And we'll get
(49:42):
into that now. Because this is a really comprehensive article,
I'm gonna try and not make it so worthy. You
know that can be a challenge for me, as I
can be long winded. I don't need y'all to remind
me of that, all right, So let's do a deep dive.
I'm looking at an article titled you say, Kakuchi Train,
Why the Astros steep price could be worth it for
(50:04):
the Blue Jays. Lefty. This is R. J. Anderson. He
writes for cbsports dot Com. He previously worked and wrote
for Baseball Prospectives. It's a very reputable entity for pro baseball.
We all reference it, all right. We know the deals
of this. Let me try and get through this thing
in pieces. Jake Bloss, Joey Lopofido, Will Wagner out in
(50:28):
comes Kokuchi. The article opens. The public reaction understandably hell
that this wasn't overpaid by Houston's part, and many would agree.
The Astros are parting ways with Baseball America. Another reputable
entity says that those three represent previously ranked number two,
(50:51):
number five, and number nineteen prospects in the Astros system.
You bring in Kokuchi a picture with an eighty five
ERRA plus over his first twenty two starts this season
for those that don't know R plus, and again, I'm
gonna try and simplify this as much as I can. Traditionally,
(51:12):
a starting picture falls with an r plus of ninety three.
Kakuchi has been performing below a starter level average ERRA
plus this year. That's all we need to know. Inside
the industry, however, says one RJ Anderston. The reaction to
the Astros acquiring Kakuchi has been perceived differently. Conversations with
(51:38):
multiple rival evaluators have painted a picture that the deal
was actually more fair than not. RJ Anderson and ESPN
dot excuse me, CBS dot com people gave the trade
a B for both parties. Here are the three reasons
why they're okay with Dana Brown doing this deal. Other
(52:01):
teams I remind you were in on Kokuchi as well.
It was later lead that they had identified the Astros
organization that this is the dude they wanted. Now, had
they not got him, we would have heard that. But
this is the liberty that you get to share when
you win the trade. All right. Here we go Many
teams like Kokuchi as the Astros, particularly his fastball and
(52:25):
his slider. His changeup also grades well, though the usability
of the change up is a bit more limited. Fan
grass stuff plus baseball prospectives stuff pro Robert Orris, pitch
quality metrics all agree Kokuchi has and Dana Brown mentioned it.
(52:45):
He's got some power. Fastball's gut, as is the slider,
all right, and to get that type of production from
a southpaw is also an added benefit. Also, the command
to walk just to batters per nine is a good deal.
And here's a word with the Kokuchi deal, and we'll
continue this on the other side. Here's a word with
(53:07):
the Kokuchi deal. The word is traits. Dana Brown and
his staff saw traits in Kokuchi that they believe will
translate to reasonable return on their investment. The three prospects
that went out the door Kokuchi's curveball, the concerns about
(53:28):
the curve. It's been his worst performing pitch this season.
He's used it as his main secondary offering, meaning the
curve batters are hitting Kokuchi's curveball for two ninety one
with the exit be low of ninety one point one.
Perhaps the astro staff can get him to reduce the
(53:49):
curveball usage in favor of throwing more sliders and change us.
We will be watching intently tonight to see if that
is the case. I remind you I've ether if Kokuchi
is back of the baseball card guy, then why is
he now in his third team being the former All
Star that he is. The other two reasons that people
(54:11):
in the industry don't necessarily have as big a problem
with the Kokuchi trade as we do locally on the
other side. Take your call on the Strolls back in
action tonight over at the real yard, Raised in Town,
Kokuchi on the Bump, Home of the Strolls, the legendre
KB and me.
Speaker 1 (54:26):
Jue the next episode.
Speaker 2 (54:29):
You can't even stop yourself.
Speaker 1 (54:30):
Bing Jon and Doerty next up.
Speaker 4 (54:34):
As Next Up continues on seven ninety.
Speaker 13 (54:43):
This is not like a Randy Johnson trade where this
guy's the number one starter coming in, he's He's just
a guy they're putting in the middle of the rotation.
Speaker 6 (54:49):
This rotation is still anchored by.
Speaker 13 (54:51):
Fromber Hunter, Brown, Ronel Blanco, Erlander when he's healthy, So
they don't need him to pitch at this elite level.
They just need him to be better than he was.
And yeah, that's that's gonna be a challenge for the
pitching guys for sure. But you know, if he can
go out there and give him ten starts with a
you know, a three five three six era, go six
five six innings every time, they take that, because I'm
(55:12):
not sure they would have got that from Jake Bloss
or anybody else in the rotation at this point because
the rotation was so thin. But you know, if he
gets to the playoffs, is Cacucie going to start a
playoff game for you? He might not, but he's also
a guy that you know, you could have it already
if you need him in a playoff start, and certainly somebody.
Speaker 6 (55:28):
Who can come in and give you innings.
Speaker 2 (55:29):
So lot of welcome back. In the next up here
on Sports Talk seven ninety forty minutes from now, Matt
Thomas and Ross very real, speaking of Matt Thomas. That
was Brian McTaggart covering the Astros for MLB dot Com.
He joined the Matt Thomas Show yesterday and he reacted
to the state of the strolls. Strolls were off yesterday,
(55:50):
which is why all of our eyes were on the
Hall of Fame game in the Houston Texans Astros back
in action tonight. Kacouchie gets the ball. Brian McTaggart on
what the impact he believes Kokuchi will have on this roster.
And I continue to read baseball people and what they
have to say about the intricacies and the nuances of
(56:12):
you say, Kokuchi's game. The Astros because Kokuchi, they've seen
him a few times, they've seen him this year, so
they have some intimate knowledge on what issues he creates
for batters, especially as a lefty. Now, I'm referencing a
particular article that I've read over the last day or
(56:33):
so from cbssports dot Com essentially why the price, the
steep price that the Astros paid to acquire Kokuchi may
end up being worth it in the end. Dana Brown
on the Shawn Salisbridge Show said the same thing, like,
wait a minute, We're not it's not the end of
the road. Yet we got a third of the season
left to go. Calm down, Okay, I've raised the hell
(56:58):
that I'm gonna raise about Kokuuch until he gets out
there and he's awful, and he will do some good
over these ten soul starts. He'll have some good. My
concern is the is the good outweigh another option? See,
they tell us that Kakuca was their prominent option. You
know what they don't tell us, Well, who was number two?
(57:19):
What were your other choices versus the package you sent out?
Not my words, I'm telling you what Baseball America ranked
number two, number five, and nineteen prospects and Jake Bloss,
Joey Lopofido, and Will Wagner. Speaking of the prospects, the
article continues, and again I'm just hitting the highlights here.
(57:43):
It basically says that none of these guys would be
considered the three that left. None of these guys will
be considered top prospects universally across Major League Baseball. From
the evaluators we spoke to, Jake Bloss profiles as more
of a back end starter. Well, isn't that way, Kakuchi
(58:04):
is I get it. Kokuchi's older seem more action, but
just saying Lopafito has struggled to make contact a worrisome
development given he's twenty five years old and offers. They
say limited defensive value. Now that's the one area I'm
gonna push back. If there's one thing we can say
about Lopes, I don't see limited defensive value. Now. I'm
(58:28):
not doing a deep dive on the metrics either, but
use your eyeballs. When low Pafito's out there in the outfield,
he makes plays, and he's done it routinely all season
since he's been called up. So defensively, I don't know
what they mean there. And then they said, essentially, Will
Wagner lack of in game power raises questions about his ceiling. Okay,
those are the prospects. They continue, and this gets interesting here.
(58:53):
Fangrass Eric Logan, excuse me. Longenhagen was basically tiquing the
Astros farm system. He says it's not really good for
a couple of reasons. The Astros got punished some picks
because the scandal. We know that the Astros also win
a lot playing late in the postseason, which means they're
drafting lower than most other teams in Major League Baseball. Also,
(59:17):
the Astros had to do some deals to ie get
a Justin Verlander, sending out some prospects. So this Eric
Longenhagen says the Astros prior to this trade had just
two players projected as league average contributors or better. Jake
bloss was one of them. The other one outfielder Jacob Melton.
(59:41):
They don't bring up Pedro Leon and they don't bring
up blue Ball in this piece. It is widely believed
that the Blue Jays did a better job with the
Astros than the White Sox did with Eric Fetti in
a return. The Astros were never gonna get Tarik Skooball
(01:00:04):
and they were never gonna get Garrett Crochet because they
just didn't have the ammunition. What Dana Brown chose to
do was secure a left handed starter who could, with
good and better instruction and a little bit of luck,
pitched like the players that were beyond Houston's grasp. Three words.
I want you to walk away from this article with
Kakuchi has traits that Dana Brown believes can help this team.
(01:00:29):
They're counting on better instruction and coaching better team around them,
and in this article from RJ. Anderson at cbsports dot com.
They're hoping they get a little bit of luck. Has
luck been on the side of the Ashtros this season?
Just saying, all right, let me wrap up this because
I want to hear Brian McTaggart again, because he dropped
(01:00:49):
the bombshell on us yesterday on Matt Thomas's show. The
last one is another piece where I pushed back on
this final aspect of what this trade means for Houston.
With Kokuchi coming to city, Houston's window is probably closing.
And there are two lines from this part as we
wrap The future is unknown for every team, of course,
(01:01:10):
but the uncertainty facing the Astros next few seasons feels
more severe than for the average Major League Baseball club. Essentially,
he's saying the Straws are in trouble. They got injuries
galore with the starting rotation. Kyle Tuck is gonna want
his money, likely gonna lose Alex Bregman. Far system continues
(01:01:31):
to lose prospects, and the prospects we do have don't
rank as high as some other folks. We got an
owner that won't cross the second threshold of the what
is it the collective bargaining tax competitive bargain at tax.
Thank you last line. Even if the Astros come up
short in their pursuit of yet another American League pennant,
(01:01:55):
we doubt they're going to wind up regretting this deal.
So those are just there's some moving pieces. Now. As
for Kokuchi, before we get to mc tagger, I saw
this from the Athletic. This is Jim Bowden, a man
that I like. He was in the organization when the
National was I was there as the GM. I like
Jim Bowden. Don't agree what everything he has to say,
but I do think it highlights points, and I kind
(01:02:18):
of cross reference the National guys from the local people
and I put the information together and then I use
my eyeballs and go, what do I think. Here's what
Jim Bolden had to say. Key takeaway from the Astros
deal to acquire Kokuchi. The Astros landed the veteran starter
that they were focused on acquiring when they traded for Kokuchi,
but they did overpay. We all know that it is
(01:02:40):
what it is. Kokuchi had a six point eighty six
RAY in June and a six point five to nine
ERA in July, which is concerning says Jim Bowden. If
I were Dana Brown, I would have preferred to pay
the price to acquire Tigers righty Jack Flaherty, who eventually
(01:03:01):
went to the Dodgers for much less, giving his back
ailment and some concerns with some physical components. Maybe Dana
Brown said, look, I got enough folks that are hurt.
I don't want to be dealing with that. Speaking of
being hurt, Brian mctagger dropped this on the Matt Thomas
Show yesterday and it's set Astro's Twitter ablaze. Brian mctagger,
why have we not and when will we see Kyle.
Speaker 13 (01:03:24):
Tucker Until we see him out there on the field
chasing fly balls and batting practice, running the bases and
some drills. He's not close to a minor league rehab assignment,
so I don't think he's close to doing either one
of those two things. There's a third of the season left.
They're exactly the two third point in this season, or
there's fifty four games left. And you know, if Tucker
(01:03:45):
started a progression right now to get ready for the
to come back, it would take him seven to ten
days with you know, the rehab and all that and
he's not close to that. So we're getting close to
saying that that Tucker might not be back towards the
end of August September at the earliest. And then you know,
at some point you run out of that runway. So
you know, I'm not ready to say he's not gonna
(01:04:07):
play again, but he's been out. I guess on the Saturday,
it will be two months since he went out, and uh,
you know he's I don't think he's anywhere close at
this point to coming back.
Speaker 6 (01:04:16):
So this is gonna be something in the next couple
of weeks.
Speaker 13 (01:04:19):
You have to watch real closely because his recovery has
really slowed down.
Speaker 2 (01:04:24):
Kyle Tucker. That was Brian McTaggart with Matt Thomas, Kyle Tucker.
It will be two months this Saturday tomorrow. Two months.
This is what we've seen Tuck mc taggart is. They
said he's not even close to a rehab assignment. I
(01:04:47):
don't understand what the ASTROS organization is telling us and
what is actually the reality of a situation. There are
some people starting and to whisper, damn sure, they just
shut Tuck down. You start getting into September before we
see Tuck in an Astros uniform in the lineup. Now,
(01:05:10):
have the Astros played well in his absence? Sure, they're
winning two games out of every three cents Tucker's absence.
They're getting on average nine hits per game, scoring five
runs per game, So it is admirable. How long can
they keep that up with Tuck out of the lineup.
(01:05:33):
Tuck's got some major money on the line. When do
the finances and the negotiation and arbitration kick in? Keep
telling Gordy the man's leg is broke. I just wish
they would tell us that. All right, let's step aside.
If you got phone calls, you want to get in
a comment, you want on Kakuchi, what all of these
(01:05:55):
national people have to say? You want to comment on
Tucky and the leg strolls back in action tonight three
game set versus Tampa Bay Rays seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. We go back to Canton,
Ohio on the other side as well, Texans in the
Hall of Fame game thirty minutes from now. Matt Thomas
Rosstery Real Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (01:06:15):
Next up continues now.
Speaker 10 (01:06:17):
So I'm a new listener at already a huge fran
new listener.
Speaker 4 (01:06:20):
I love the show with Stan north Fleet and Chris
Gordy on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:06:28):
What's going on to the good people at Age Town.
Appreciate you guys hanging out with us twenty six minutes remaining.
Thank you for allowing us to maintain us. Stay this
as your home for Houston sports, where real Texans talk
and listen. No need to go anywhere. We talk a
lot of football around here. We also talk about Dastros
when they do stuff like send prospects two, five and
(01:06:48):
nineteen out to get in a dude with a seven
point seventy five ray over his last ten games, ten stoughts,
excuse me, and he's zero and four. His name would
be yuse Kakuchi. He's gonna get the ball. He's at
the real yard tonight. We will not see Kyle Tucker
in action, and I don't know that we're gonna see
Tuck this month. Brian Tagger set off a five storm
(01:07:09):
on Astro's social when he came on Matt Thomas' show
and said Tuck's not anywhere close to being ready. Can
the Astros win a pennant without Kyle Tucker? I do
not believe so. Now, stranger things have happened. We'll see.
Do I think Kakuchi is gonna come in here and
all of a sudden, you know, have a magic elixir
(01:07:32):
and be fantastic. Nope, they don't necessarily need him to
be Fromer's the bill cale until JV returns. Blanco's been solid,
Hunter Brown has been mostly solid. Be all right, Kakuchi,
just keep this thing afloat. I understand he's here now.
I'm willing to give the man benefit of the doubt.
(01:07:53):
Let's see what he's got in an Astros unit. All right,
So we that's that business over at minute May park again.
Astros on on deck here six o'clock after the eighteen
first pitch, shortly after seven. If you're making your way
over to the ballpark tonight, give me a shout. Let
me know what are you looking forward to? What's on
your mind as you get ready to go over there.
What do y'all feel about this Tucker news? It may
(01:08:13):
be September before we see Tuck. And at that point,
at what point do the finances kick in? Do they
shut him down? Somebody told me, my man Kevin hit
me up on social stand Sportsman. The Astros have lied
to everyone about Tucker's injury, plain and simple. He kind
(01:08:36):
of looks that way. Before we get back to the
Hall of Fame game. Speaking of the Astros, I also
teased Greg Rajan Houston Chronicle. He had a comment about
the Mount Rushmore of sports in Houston. Who you got
up there all time? And if you haven't been following
(01:08:57):
the Olympics, and I haven't watched it, a ton, dude.
Carry the Olympics here on the iHeart family of networks,
not on this station, but you ord iHeart, You'll see
it there. You get the updates. I think WEX provides
those as well. For the second time. Houston native Simon
Biles is an Olympic All around gold medalists. She quite
(01:09:18):
simply is the goat when it comes to gymnastics in
this country period. Simon Biles from an athletic standpoint, she's
on the Houston Mount Rushmore. So since we're here, I
thought it's only fitting we are celebrating Andre Johnson going
(01:09:40):
into the Hall of Fame, the first Texan to do so.
He will be followed shortly enough by Justin James Watt.
Some people from a Houston pro football standpoint have both
Andre and JJ. Some people. We had a caller area
early excuse me that had who did he have had?
(01:10:00):
Warren Moon?
Speaker 12 (01:10:04):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:10:04):
And Erl Campbell? All right? Somebody? Oh, that same caller
had Hakeem and Clyde Drexler personally Mount Rushmore, I would
have Simon Vows, Hakim o Lodjewe in no order, justin
(01:10:27):
James Watt and jose L Tuvey. I think by the
time all of those individuals get to their respective end
of their careers. For those that haven't, obviously, Hakeem and
dre are done, as Haqem man JJ are done. Excuse me, Samon,
this is probably her last Olympics. I saw a funny
(01:10:51):
note about Simon. She was dealing with is dealing with
a sore left calf. They thought it would compromise the
team competition. It didn't. They won't go there too. Kevin Durant,
Kevin Durant, he said he's jealous of some mon biles
calf muscles. Oh, by the way, on KD. By the way,
the US men, they destroyed the Puerto Rican team, just
(01:11:15):
like they destroyed South Sudan. Coach k says that Kevin
Durant is the best player to ever suit up for
the US men's basketball team in Olympic competition.
Speaker 1 (01:11:27):
Quote.
Speaker 2 (01:11:27):
I think it's because of his longevity and his accomplishment accomplishments. Again,
it's unique. But the amount of points he has scored,
he scored a lot more than anybody else in US
Olympic competition. So that's coach k On Kevin Durant, Mount
Rushmore again for me? What say you, Simone Biles, Hakeem Justin,
(01:11:49):
James Watt? Who am I missing?
Speaker 6 (01:11:53):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:11:53):
Hose l tuva? All right? Before we pop over back
to the Hall of Fame game, A couple people want
to chime in. We'll go Michael in the Heights and
then we'll get Philip Oh Excuman Philippe. I don't know
why I keep saying, am I think about Phelipe's and
miss the challenge? Don't know? Michaeln Heights whatever?
Speaker 14 (01:12:10):
Brow dog? Hey man, we got distracted yesterday was the
Darth Vader House. But I was gonna say, man, hey,
good for cam akers Man. I think he's going to
make the team, and I think what a what a
valuable piece is going to be to possibly catch passes
out of the backfield and screens and stuff like that. Man,
I can't wait. The running game looks pretty good, dude,
(01:12:32):
Mount Rushmore. Oh wait, And also I think yesterday you
brought up like, you know, the Texans need to rebrand themselves,
you know, and I think they have. They went from
ashy to classy, you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (01:12:41):
They're still rebranding. They did an excellent job in your one,
but the process must continue. But yes, they should be
proud of how far they've come in such a short time.
Speaker 14 (01:12:50):
So Mount Rushmore's got four heads on it, right, yep.
So man four is tough. But someone's got to be
on their dreams. Got to be on there.
Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
Uh J two.
Speaker 14 (01:13:04):
Be on there right, there's there's there's a bunch. But
I'll tell you what. If C Shroud wants the super Bowl,
he's going up there, you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (01:13:15):
If he wins that, we're going to start by the
time he gets to the end. If he wins one,
we're gonna have to have a conversation.
Speaker 14 (01:13:21):
Yeah, man, they're gonna have to expand from Florida, you know, Mountain.
Speaker 2 (01:13:26):
Rushmore, absolutely not. Michael Linn Heights. You stayed out of
trouble this weekend. Brother. I appreciate you Can I also
say something I want to bring something to con I
want to get your on the other side, I'll get
you a Mount Rushmore as well. Can I bring up
something that y'all are gonna get mad at me? And
I don't want to get into it.
Speaker 1 (01:13:40):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:13:41):
I understand what Hakeem means to this city. Icon doesn't
get more iconic in sports in this city and alchem
O Lodge one but here. Pretty soon, James Harten is
going to surpass Hakeem on the scoring list. A Keem
is thirteenth in scoring. James Harden needs like a thousand point.
I wants to outscore a Keen. James Harden has one MVP,
(01:14:05):
just like a king does. I understand the postseason success
and the longevity in a Houston Rockets uniform. It's just
something I noticed in preparing for the show. When James
Harden passes a Keen for the most point or most
points in NBA history, I will be anxiously waiting that
conversation and the debates that ensue. Felipe over at Mini
(01:14:27):
may Park. Brother, give me like twenty seconds.
Speaker 6 (01:14:30):
Yeah, well, I think the trade. You know, we only
take that peace value. But if we look deep into it.
I think who is really.
Speaker 10 (01:14:36):
Gonna be great for us if the fishing Steff can
help turn it around. Local Fetos has been going blank
since you went to Toronto, and he's been doing that
since here.
Speaker 6 (01:14:46):
I mean, I have more to say, but you know,
one of the time crust. But I appreciate you saking McCallan, my.
Speaker 2 (01:14:50):
Man, Filipe my man heading over the Mini may Park
at some point this evening does a lot of good work.
When he calls into the show, Sorry for cutting you
short on time, Bro, we gotta get out the final
segment of the show. We'll get out to make way
for Matt Thomas and Rossville Yal. Still taking your call.
Seven one, three, two, two five, seven ninety. You want
to get in Mount Rushmore, we'll talk some Texans Hall
of Fame game and if you want to respond and
(01:15:12):
you're thinking about Kokuchie, You're home of the Strokes. Sports
Talk seven.
Speaker 4 (01:15:16):
Ninety Stanton or Fleet and Chris Gordy. This is next
top on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 2 (01:15:26):
Final segment of the week here for us on next
up stan Fleet Flying Solo. Chris Gordon will return next week.
Connedy McGovern He's on the other side thanks again, Houston
for hanging out with us all week man MLB trade deadline. Uh,
you say, Kakuchi, We'll see what all the hubbub is about. Uh,
(01:15:46):
he takes the bump tonight. Who's he going up against?
Who's this guy? I said his name earlier, Young Cat
Shane boz b a z Boz Shane boz oh and
one three point six six yr one point for two whip.
We'll see he's going up against the south Pard Kakucha.
Excuse me, let's talk some Hall of Fame game as well.
(01:16:08):
We also wove in the Mount Rushmore. Small Bos a
bad girl and highly decorated. Obviously, she's quite simply the
greatest US female gymnast we've ever seen, and we know
that she reps h town proudly. She's on the Mount Rushmore.
She might have been on there, if we're being real,
(01:16:29):
talk prior to doing this in Paris what she just did.
Somebody has an issue, Oh my route Mushmore. I can't
even talk my Mount Rushmore. Justin James Watt, hakeem Olajahwan,
Jose to Ve and small Boos biscuit. Sounds like he
has an issue with my Mount Rushmore. What up, biscuit man?
Speaker 12 (01:16:53):
Staying my brother from another mother?
Speaker 2 (01:16:55):
What am I tripping about about.
Speaker 5 (01:17:01):
JJ over Earl Campbell?
Speaker 2 (01:17:03):
No way?
Speaker 5 (01:17:03):
Staying no way? I want the Houston people call no way.
Speaker 2 (01:17:08):
It's not that hard.
Speaker 12 (01:17:09):
He carried carried a team.
Speaker 5 (01:17:12):
They went further than JJ's teams went.
Speaker 12 (01:17:15):
It's a team and it was in an instant replayed.
They probably would have made it to the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (01:17:21):
How can you not run? Listen, Earl Campbell was a
bad man, much respect. He represents Rose City, Tyland, Texas, Texas.
I understand all due respect to Earl Campbell. I'm gonna
ask you a question. Who was better at their job?
JJ was better at what he does than Earl Campbell
was what he did. That's just the facts, No disrespect.
Speaker 12 (01:17:45):
MVP said otherwise saying yes.
Speaker 2 (01:17:48):
Earl Campbell was MVP of the league in nineteen seventy nine.
JJ Watt was also three time Defensive Player of the
Year as a defensive lineman, not a corner, not a
linebacker in the old days what backers where everything. He's
not an edge defender any pass rusher. He was both
interior and an edge russier at the same time. Justin
(01:18:09):
James why in my opinion, And I'll give you some thought.
You know, I looked, I thought about you know, I'm
looking at Earl Campbe's accomplishments. I gotta go Justin James.
But I understand your thought. It's an interesting question, biscuit.
I appreciate the call. Three time Offensive Player of the
Year Earl Campbell respect seventy eight, seventy nine, and eighty
(01:18:30):
Offensive Rookie of the Year respect three times All Pro
did win MVP in seventy nine. We'll have to do
that another time, Earl Campbell versus JJ. And then if
you really want to be funky, if we're I would
actually bump Earl out and we got to get some
(01:18:50):
Warre Moon action. The only African American quarterback in the
Pro Football Hall of Fame. Mike and Spring getting here
on this rug more conversation to wrap up the segment.
All right, what's up, guys?
Speaker 15 (01:19:05):
I think that I think this conversation should be a
little bit broader, like this should be a mount rushmore
of each Houston sport.
Speaker 2 (01:19:17):
So each sport, the team sports. You put four folks
up there.
Speaker 15 (01:19:23):
Yeah, because I mean you think about like you're talking
about Mosel today obviously the greatest astroever. But there's there's
two Hall of famers, three hall of famers if you
count Nolan.
Speaker 2 (01:19:31):
Ryan agreed, But that's not how it works the Rushmore.
It's an interesting exercise, Mike. I'm not mad at you
for suggesting that, but that's just not typically how we
work this thing.
Speaker 15 (01:19:45):
But with the previous caller, with the previous caller, you
said who's better at their job? But you can't compare
football to baseball and who's better at their job?
Speaker 2 (01:19:53):
No, I brought that up relative to Earl Campbell conversation
versus JJ Watt. Now, Earl Campbell's got the MVP, no
question about that. That's huge. JJ didn't do that. JJ
got some votes, but he didn't pull it off. But
that's when I started saying, who who was better at
their job?
Speaker 15 (01:20:10):
If that was the oranges, when you're comparing gymnastics to
the basketball, to baseball to football, I mean, you.
Speaker 2 (01:20:21):
Can't compare them all. Of course I can. It's still
a competition, it's still a sport. And I'll be frank
with you, and this may turn some people off, y'all know,
I don't give a damn. I'm not saying you specifically, Mike,
what Simon Biles has accomplished going against the best in
the world's significantly more difficult than what any of those
(01:20:41):
other three on the Hall of Fame. Now get it.
Baseball is a global game. I understand NBA is now
a global game. Understand, but the level, in other words,
there are more people competing in some more bowles arena
than those others relative to the sport. I feel pretty
comfortable in saying that. So I understand your point, Mike.
He brings a unique dynamic team by team. If we
(01:21:04):
were to do the Astros Mount Rushmore, that's pretty easy.
The Rocket, the Rockets, Mount Rushmore, that's pretty easy. Houston
Pro Football, That Mount Rushmore is pretty easy. It'll be
some semblance of these five Andre Johnson, JJ Watt, Earl Campbell,
Warren Moon probably those four. Yeah, And in the Rockets
(01:21:33):
you would probably say hakeeen Clyde, James Harden and then
we'll have some fun with that other one. All right,
Kakuchi on the bump tonight. I'll try to wrap up
real quick with just some overall thoughts again from the
Hall of Fame game, Johnny and Missouri City, your next
up final call.
Speaker 5 (01:21:50):
Of today, Adam glad to get in. I'd like to
wish the astro's good luck today. I'm looking forward to
sharing what do be nice to have a good left
hander there and I think good things will happen.
Speaker 2 (01:22:12):
And I share that sentiment with you, brother. I hope
the very best. The deal is done, it is what
it is. Now. We have to make best on what
we can do. We got us some pro football in
our veins. I'm thankful to the Texans for doing that.
I would have liked to have seen Kamari lasta to
play football. Second round pick out of Georgia, he has
solidified that position through ten practices in a mini camp
(01:22:34):
as a starting corner on his team. I don't know
how he pulled that off. Would have liked to see
Henry Told told Damian Piercebrevin Jordan, and a few other
folks really appreciate what the offensive line, Blake Fisher, Kenyon Green,
and Juice Scruggs did over there on the left side.
The pocket was cleaned for both Davis Mills and case Keenum,
who respectively looked a part. Davis Mills would be my
(01:22:54):
quarterback too at this point. Love the wide receive a
battle coming down the stretch. I think it's about four
dudes fighting for two spots Xavier Hutchison, Ben Skearnic Metchi
and Steven Sims. That's four fighting for wide receiver five
and six. That is intriguing. Also, Cam Makers, I may
(01:23:15):
have been wrong, brother, you might still have something left
in the tank and Cam Makers might make this team
as a running back. He looked really good. All right,
let's wrap this up for the week for Connadie McGovern
and Chris Gordy's absence. Thanks to all of our guests
this week. Thanks to all of our callers that includes you,
