Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to no Ducks. It's EuroBasket Elimination round fun right
now on a Sunday. I imagine it might be a
little silly. It might be a little silly Sunday today.
I'm tas Mellice tussles Molass during EuroBasket. Of course with me,

(00:23):
it's the man in the middle, Trey Kirby.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Ayo, A silly Sunday. What do you think, Uh, silly Sunday.
You think it's gonna be extra silly today? Yes, we're laughing.
You got our parlays in.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
If you're watching on YouTube, you just saw the smiliest
face that always makes us giggle. It's our old friend
Cam Giggly Stewart.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Do do you think do you think Cam Stewart is
aware that the EuroBasket tournament is happening right now?

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Oh gosh, no, there's no chance. You see, you'd think
there's a possibility because he is. He's a sicko. He
will go through every horse race that's going on, you know,
like so he goes deep. But right now we're talking
opening week NFL, the US Open Men's finals happening. There's

(01:17):
lots of stuff happening. So yeah, I don't think so.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Yeah, it's unlikely, but the fact that you can bet
on it means there is a chance that he is.
That's a good pointing a line somewhere.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
I imagine if he did make some bets, he may
have lost some money because here we are into the
round of eight and there were some upsets. If you
look at the bracket now the eight teams that remain,
Lithuania will play Greece, Turkey will play poland those happen
on Tuesday. Germany will play Slovenia, and Finland will play

(01:50):
Georgia on Wednesday. We'll have a show after that on Wednesday.
I didn't say Serbia that is an upset. Let's start
with that. Nikola Jokich was bounced in a round of
sixteen by Finland. Whoo Finland beating Serbia.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Tray, What an incredible game this was. I saw as
soon as it happened. The EuroBasket x account posted several
different tweets about this game. At one point they called
it the biggest upset of EuroBasket twenty twenty five. Okay,
fair enough, this is the favorite getting knocked off in
the round of sixteen. They followed that up by saying
this is one of the biggest upsets in the history

(02:27):
of basketball. Stretching out a little bit more there, but
now we're looking at two pretty wide ends of the spectacle.
The final one they posted was Upset of the Century.
You know, we're twenty five years in. Maybe it is,
maybe it is, I don't know, but an awesome game
to watch, an awesome performance by Finland and tasks. I

(02:48):
gotta say you kind of called exactly how this one
went down a You said Serbia was vulnerable. I don't
know if you thought it was gonna be Finland necessarily
that knocked them off. But after the innury to bog
Dan Bogdanovich, they didn't look quite as tough, a little
bit more beatable as we saw they were. And you
also said the five out attack of Finland is going

(03:10):
to be tough for Nikola Jokic to guard. And guess
what it was tough for Nikola Jokic to guard. Make
your market and lowry markin in twenty nine points, eight boards,
three assists, four steals. He was huge. Our guy Slim
Jesus came through in the clutch two three pointers in
the fourth, both in Jokic's face. Every time this guy scores,
he talks trash to the opponent, just always on the

(03:31):
line of getting a technical. I love that. And then
Valtin in big shots, big boards laid in this one,
hit a three, grabbed an offensive rebound, and then hit
another three down the stretch, all plays where Jokic was
forced to guard in space. This was the task Mela special.
What an upset by Finland?

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Oh wow? An old photo of me with cash on
my face? Yeah, I guess, And all anything any basketball
league says can be deemed as legitimate. Like they said, hey,
this is the biggest basketball upset forever. It's kind of
I mean it's big, but literally in EuroBasket in twenty

(04:14):
twenty two, the Serbs won every single game in the
round row and that opening week they're unbeaten, and then
they go and play Italy and Italy beats them because
they were kind of playing five out And that's what
I thought could happen again. And that's what the finish did.
I don't even care that Larry Markinen had a bad
shooting night. It wasn't all that efficient, but the guy

(04:37):
just brought it. That team brought it. And watching Serbia
in that first preliminary round. You could see they didn't
have it, especially with bogged down out. Larry Market on
the first possession had Jokic out on the perimeter and
he went right by him ready for a left handed dunk,
and he missed, but it didn't matter because he just
kept fighting. A minute later he had to put back dunk,

(04:58):
then he missed a shot, put back miss, then he
had missed it again, and then he got another put back.
So he was just going at it, and then he
had a four point play. Did he mean to bank
home a three and get felt the same time, Probably not,
but he was just going at it. He had the
step backs in the mid post. He had fourteen points
in the first half because he was really just going hard.
This team got up on Serbia, I mean right away,

(05:19):
eleven to one, thirteen three, sixteen, five, twenty nine. They
were bringing it, and the Serbs came back of Ramovic
or Buddy who got injured in the last game, but
he did come out. He was playing hard. Their double
bigs kind of did their thing, rebounding. Mitchich, who looked
old last game, had a huge deep three. He's going

(05:40):
to Israel next year. He ain't even coming to the NBA,
but they all fought back, and then you mentioned that
Valtonen who sealed it at the end for Finland. This
guy is definitely a role player who you wouldn't think
would put up eight points in the last two minutes
and just going at Jokic literally literally Adam under two

(06:01):
minutes left, I got Jokic, I'll do this. I mean,
he went Adam, he set up marketing, then he hit
a three with two minutes left that he tipped it in.
Then he hit another three, so he went crazy. But
you just look at Serbia in the preliminary round and
you look at the numbers of this game. Finland had
twenty offensive rebounds on forty four misses, so you're basically

(06:23):
getting an offensive rebound every second miss. I mean, do
you want it more?

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (06:27):
They did, and the Serbs just didn't look like it.
They didn't look like themselves. So you know, the the
Serbs just weren't themselves.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
They were control every now, they were chilling. They were
hitting some threes early on, and they kind of got
into settling mode. I thought. Down the stretch, especially Jokic
was great, thirty three points in thirty four minutes, but
he also had to play thirty four minutes, and there
were times when he was a target defensively for the
finished team. You're right, Balton in It seemed like the

(06:56):
two threes he hit late in this game, he was like, oh,
you're really gonna give me this shot because he jab
stepped into it. Jokic didn't move, so it's like, fine,
I'll take it if you're not going to step out.
Hit a couple of them, and you know, when you're
watching the highlights back, there is a lot of Number
fifteen in Serbia looking on as these baskets are happening.
It ain't Jokic's fault that they lost, but he was
on the receiving end of a lot of these buckets

(07:16):
from the finished team. That was just fun to watch.
I love this guy. Miran and Mika miran him. We're
calling him slim Jesus. He's eighteen years old. Literally, he
should be in a high school classroom right now. School
is back in session. Get this guy a book, but
it seems like he knows everything on the basketball court.
He plays like he's thirty six years old. Zero fear
in this guy. When he gets out on the fast break,

(07:38):
you're getting a highlight for sure. And then, like I said,
he's going to get a taunting technical almost every single game.
You would think it's the first time he's ever scored.
Every time he scores.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Yeah, you mentioned everything. Everybody loves that guy just because
he looks cool. And yeah, I really liked to see
in these In these things, elimination games, anything can happen.
So we mentioned that veltanin nobody on this side of
the Atlantic, nobody knows Elias Fulton really. I mean he

(08:10):
went to Arizona State. I looked him up, but he
was really strictly a role guy. But to see him
not just because the ball was rotating, but because he
could do a step chat and step back and hit
it in Jokic's face, I mean that's These are all
big moments and Finland can win a big game like this,
And people shut me up because I didn't talk about
marketing leading into this tournament as a guy to watch,

(08:32):
and bang he showed up. Not efficient, I think he's
like one for nine from three. Who cares, h he
kind of he led the way for this team and
they all had it. They all had it going on.
Let's move on to Italy. Slovenia, where Luca also showing up.
What a monster, the best Luka Doncic defensive game I've
ever seen. That ain't misinformation. I want EuroBasket to tweet

(08:57):
that is it real? Can you measure it? No, That's
why it's true. Luka Doncic was awesome. They just schooled
Italy from the get go.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Yeah, they had Luka Doncic and that was really the
only difference in this game. Forty two of the eighty
four points for Slovenia came at the hands of Luka Doncic,
only one assist, and he got it early on a
beautiful pass from basically half court out of the pick
and roll. Don't know how it got through, but when
you see Luca put up a forty two point game
with one assist, you know he's out there trying to score.
He was dripping wet. Afterwards, he tried to get Rudy

(09:29):
Fernandez a hug, and Rudy wouldn't take it because the
guy was way too sweaty, which means he was working hard.
That's how you can always tell if Luca. If his
hair is down on his face, you know he's putting
an effort in out there, but he looks like the
best player in the world right now, especially since Serbia
got bounced early. You can claim it's Luca, but he
looks like there's nobody who can figure out a way
to guard him. Here. He talked about getting he had

(09:51):
easy guarding early on, scored some baskets. I think he
had twenty two in the first quarter, so then they
started doubling him and guess what, he only had eight
in the third court the second quarter, so just a
mild thirty at halftime. I guess you could say that
Italy shut him down in the second half, only twelve points,
and it kind of looked like they were coming back.
A nice little boost by the Italians in the fourth quarter.

(10:12):
They had some momentum when Fontechio hit that crazy shot
from the corner to pull within one, but then Luca
just kept going to the line. Italy couldn't get a
stop without falling and Slovenia was able to knock down
some free throws and got a comfortable win on the
back of Luca. He's going up against the German team,
I believe next that's going to be a huge test
for him. But in a single game, elimination tournament, like

(10:35):
the Duke could have fifty and then you're going home.
That's exactly what happened to Italy.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
Yeah, he was sweaty, he was going at it. I
don't know if it was hot in Riga Latvia in
that arena, because I think the crew chief, actually Matthew
Lee Kllio, he's from Canada. That man was wet too.
I don't know what it is about the ref jerseys
during EuroBasket, but it looked like he had a bib
like he was ready to eat, like it was just

(11:03):
a sweat bib that he had going on. And I
don't know, maybe they should ask the NBA for their jerseys.
But either way, Luca was awesome and sweating because he
was really given it on the defensive end. I mentioned that,
and I think, like you said, he was thirty points
in the first half and twelve in the second half.
He had to slow down defensively as well. I mean
the first possession he was posted by Melly, he was

(11:25):
getting out in front of that post, in front of
that post up and then the second one as well,
he stole both times. He was trying to make steels
like all game he was really fighting hard, and he
was getting hit as well. He banged knees early in
this game. He went to the locker room after the
first quarter. He sat with two point three seconds left
in the second quarter just to get him more rest.

(11:47):
But he was classic Luca. I mean literally stepped back
threes and whoever's face. They tried to throw Semoni Fontechio
because he's kind of his size at him, nothing really worked.
He was just on fire. He was yapping with the referees.
He was just classic Luca out there. I mean, the
EuroBasket should make a montage of all the times he

(12:08):
bickers at referees because he does it so well. He's
just he'sn't natural at it, you know, like he's bringing the.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
Ball up, he does complain. You're saying he complains all
the time, but guess what, he still gets file calls
he's taking. He took sixteen free throws in this game,
made fifteen of them. I mentioned on our first show
he's the only guy who still gets NBA file calls
in FOBA. But he's the best guy out there, so
you kind of understand why.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
Yeah, I just I admire how he does it. Like
to start a possession while he's off the ball, while
he's asking for a foul on the miss like during plays,
after plays, he just he's really good at it. But yes,
he just gets it done after the game. Yeah, and
there was clips of you mentioned Rudy Fernandez and Jorge Garbajosa,

(12:52):
who are part of the Spanish Basketball Federation, and you
could just see Rudy just doing the what what is
this guy? I mean, they're just Spain's done, but they're
just taking in this game. Horay. Garbajosa didn't have much
of a reaction because I don't think he reacts anything,
but they just were watching this guy do it, and
Simone tried to give it to him and they all
tried to get back into this game. But weird four

(13:17):
on one that turned it into an offensive foul for
Italy in the third quarter when they were down nine
it would have been seven as they were trying to
come back. That hurt, but yeah, they got into such
a big hole, and that's what happens in these forty
minute games. They were down twenty nine to eleven after
the first quarter and couldn't fight back against that dude.
We will see him against as you said, Germany on Wednesday.

(13:39):
Tough one for Luca, but it'll be fun.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
Yeah, it should be an awesome game. And I mean
Italy did a good job to get back in the game.
They just didn't have Luca and Slovenia did. And I
think going forward, Italy will no longer have Danilo Gallinari
pulling in Nick Vucivich retiring immediately after the loss here,
so he's done. Booch is done. I think Scariola, the
coach from Spain retired after they got bounced before the

(14:05):
round of sixteen too, So you know, a new era
in euro Basket.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
People just want to party, I guess, and just say
I'm done. I'm gonna enjoy myself after my last game,
Let's have some fun. Let's move on to this next game.
I gotta be honest. I was definitely cheering on for Greece.
I was with all those Greek fans that made the travel.
I guess it's like I did the the Google maps.
It's like thirty hours from Greece to drive to Lafia.

(14:32):
It's a three hour flight if they're in that kind
of mood. But I was chearing with them. But this
was I think the worst game of these two days
that we watched here these eight games, Greece took care
of business. Yiannis was a monster, dropping thirty seven, getting
out to his classic self. He just looks so great.
You're we'll get to Greece and how they freed him

(14:54):
up and they did a great job. But maybe this
because this was game eight of eight, So why was
this Dudsville tray? Or is this just me?

Speaker 2 (15:04):
No, you're right, this one was kind of a snooze alert.
But it was the last game out of eight of them,
Like you're saying, we saw some amazing upsets earlier in
the weekend, and this was coming off of a forty
two pointer from Luca Doncins that was close to the end,
and this one was close to the end too, But
much like the Slovenia game, one team had it an
NBA MVP candidate and the other team didn't. Thirty seven

(15:25):
for Giannis. The only other guy who even made an
impact to me was semador Off seven points, four offensive rebounds.
This guy was all over the place. Anytime Grease missed,
it seemed like they were getting the ball back off
the offensive rebound, and when it came down to it,
they could just throw it up to Jannis and he
would dunk it pretty easily. So nice for the Greek

(15:46):
team to pull off the win.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
Here, Yeah, it wasn't all that exciting. I liked how
they didn't go to Giannis right away on the first
possession because Costa Slucas the oldie. He brought it up
and they just left him wide over and they could
have run a play for Jannest but he said, all right,
you're giving me that space, I'm going to hit that shot.
He stepped into it, he stepped on the line and
he hit a shot instead of running a play for

(16:09):
Jannis and making them a predictable team, which is what
I think Israel did. On on the other side, Denny
Avdio was taken out by Cosas Papa Knakalou as our
man Eric Reid used to call him at the Miami
Heat when Cosas Papa Nicolau was in the NBA, we
made a video of Eric Reed saying Cosas Papa Knakalou

(16:31):
he was. He did a great job of fronting of Dia,
not letting him catch the ball, and the first seven
minutes Avdia, Who's had a great tournament, he didn't get
anywhere close to the rim. He took him till late
in the first quarter to get there, and I thought
part of it was that part of it was not
playing Raman Sorkin, who was really good for this team.

(16:51):
He didn't start. I mean, he was playing like thirty
minutes a game through the early part of this tournament.
They decided, I guess, not to play him against Giannis.
They thought it could work. It worked for Lithuania, We'll
get to that Jonas Valentuna sitting for them, but it
didn't work here and they just had no flow, absolutely
no flow. They were dropping balls all over the place.

(17:13):
Like first in the first half, Grease shot two of
eleven from three, still up nine. Throughout the whole game
they shot four of twenty five from three, six of
twelve from the free throw line. They weren't that good,
but it doesn't matter because Jannis was literally kicking as
and I think it really just helped getting him that space.
Others were drawing some attention and he was dancing out there.

(17:34):
The eurostep was really happening here in the EuroBasket transition,
the baseline spins. He was just on fire. Well, Israel
couldn't do it. It complained so much about fouls and that
Denny wasn't getting the touches.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
But not in a good way like Luca. I didn't
like how they were complaining.

Speaker 1 (17:53):
Yeah, Luca, you're right. I hate how Luca complaints. But
today now, No, today was cool. I know, like NBA,
don't like, don't like seeing it every game. Today today
they had I mean, he's skilled, he's a skilled complainer.
I didn't think Israel really had it. I don't think
they had as much reason to complain. Although what they

(18:15):
should get in EuroBasket is the hawkeye camera. We saw
it last year in the NBA. It could have helped out.
Janis had a putback that they were wondering was that
after the shot clock, and man, it was so close.
They need the freaking hawk gye and they gave him
those two points that hurt, that hurt Israel. I see

(18:38):
this question here why is Israel in the euros from
Garren Luke. That's a great question. No one knows. No
one ever knows why Israel is playing in every is
in both the EuroLeague and the euro Basket. No one knows.
But the Greeks took care of business and they were gone,
right quick. This was one you just had to run
Yanis out there and yeah, Israel didn't not have it going.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
Yeah, Israel made twenty six shots in the game. Janis
made eighteen, so it was basically Yannis versus the Israeli team.
And guess what, Jannis is better than every single player
they've got, so they can substand withstand the Greek team
shooting four for twenty five from three. They didn't get
any free throw attempts, like you're saying, six of twelve
at the line, but also eighteen offensive rebounds, so when

(19:23):
they missed, Janis got the board and put it back in.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
My last note has nothing to do with basketball and
is only for the basketball media geeks. I will say
a Greek player, Paneotis kalia Zakis, kalia Zakis, he looks
like a young Joseph Kosharo of the score. There needs
to be a split screen of young Joe Kasharo and

(19:47):
kalia Zakis. I don't know if it's the size of
their nose or what it is, but they look so similar.

Speaker 2 (19:53):
That's it. Okay.

Speaker 1 (19:54):
Moving on, Let's get to Germany Portugal because Germany is
the freaking favorite in this tournament and they look like
it against Portugal, though, this was close until the fourth
quarter when they really turned it on.

Speaker 2 (20:07):
Yeah, this was like a ten point game going into
the fourth quarter, and somehow it ended up being a
thirty three to seven fourth quarter for Germany. They end
up winning by thirty. But I thought Portugal played pretty well.
I thought they were staying in the game. I thought
they were playing a little bit more under control than
the German team was. But maybe it was just a
matter of Germany not making their open shots. Because once

(20:30):
Maudo Low started getting hot in the fourth quarter, it
really was over in an avalanche. So I don't know
what the Germanic word for avalanches, but I'm sure it
sounds awesome and I'm sure they were screaming it as
they happened. Germany looked like they were in danger of
an upset, but then in that last quarter you're like, oh, right,
they're a well oiled offensive machine. They got every sort

(20:51):
of shot they want. I think Franz ended up with
only sixteen points, but he has been incredible in this tournament,
average in twenty a game on sixty percent shooting, and
it feels like if he gets the ball with a
step in transition. It's going to be a dunk or
a layup at the rim because he looks like the biggest,
fastest guy out there when he's running the wing.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
I'm gonna believe what two stream teamers are saying, because
it is it's not coming from one person, it's coming
from two. Well, it's coming down from three. The Germanic
word for avalanche is levine or levine or something like that.

Speaker 2 (21:25):
Great cool, that's what it was. Yeah, you've had a
cool story, bro.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
Yeah, Maodo Low what a great name. And you just
see l on the back of the guy's jersey. Yeah,
he came in and he changed the game in the
fourth quarter. They won the fourth quarter thirty three seven.
That guy comes in splash threes. He's a backup point guard.
Boom boom, boom boom. He hit four threes. Overall, they
just have enough because they are so deep. He is

(21:59):
just a guy you never really scout for. I imagine
too much anyway, But yeah, you mentioned all the other guys,
and Franz and Tristan Tristan da Silva actually speaking of
their depth, I made a note because Franz Wagner has
Franz on the back of his name. Tristan Da Silva
has Tristan on the back of his name. Will there
ever be a point where NBA players have the option

(22:22):
I'm gonna put my first name on my jersey. I
think that'll ever happen because it could mean Dalla dollar bills,
like it could mean a kid sitting there says, WHOA,
I gotta print my first name on my jersey, or
or you know, just that kind of thing, open it
up a little bit, or is that too gimmicky, like

(22:44):
to actually put a first name. I don't want to go.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
They should do it. They should do it. They should
do it for when teams released their city edition jerseys,
you should be able to pick whatever is on the
back of your jersey. We've had something similar. I think
it was the Heat versus the Nets played one game
with nicknames on the back. Ray Allen had Shuttlesworth on
the back of his jersey. Lebron had King James. So
it has happened. You can even go further back to

(23:08):
Pete Maravitch wearing pistol with quotation marks around it. That's sick.
When you can put extra punctuation on the back of
a jersey, I say, go for it, because if we're
gonna have these ridiculous jerseys, why don't you just go
to the next level and throw a nikola on the
back of it or a tarness smart.

Speaker 1 (23:26):
Yeah, if you isolate it just for city edition jerseys,
that can make sense. You don't have to do it
all the time. And there's you see, we're showing you
here Franz had from with Franz on the back of
his jersey and people saying here, oh, Nane used to
do that. Well, he changed his name and literally got
rid of the rest of his name, so that was

(23:47):
his name, like he was you know, Ronaldo or Neymar
or Pele or something.

Speaker 2 (23:53):
Fred. If I was about that guy who played for Brazil,
it said Fred on the back of the jersey.

Speaker 1 (23:58):
It's a great name. If Fred van Vliet came to
a game that bread on the bakery City edition, do
it at me, all right. We will see Germany versus
Slovenia on Wednesday and again we'll be back after the
last game on Wednesday, those two Germany's Slovenia, Finland Georgia

(24:18):
and a couple quarterfinals on the Tuesday before that, where
Lithuania will be a part of one taking on Greece
because they went into Lafia, went into Riga Lafia and one.
This was a fun, fun game. Is a great start
to this game for Lithuania. Their fans traveled. It was
a blast. As I said Jonas Fealatunas coming off the bench.

(24:40):
Obviously Latvia was into it. Good fight. What'd you think
of this game? Right?

Speaker 2 (24:45):
Yeah, good fight by the Latvian team, Like you're saying,
the crowd was completely insane for this one. Porzingis played
great thirty four points, nineteen boards, but it was Arnot's
Velitka who was the story for the Lithuanian team, stepping
in for the Yakabiitis. I believe. I think they call
this guy the babyface Killer. They also call him the
Baltic Mamba, and then of course people thought he was

(25:07):
Alex Caruso reincarnated. Twenty one points and twelve assists for Valitska,
and it was awesome because a few of the assists
were like, you know, Lithuanian system assists where I passed
it to the top of top of the key, there's
a guy coming and cutting up hitting an easy three.
But then there was a bunch of assists where he's
beating his guy off the dribble and pick and roll

(25:28):
and finding amazing passes where you're not even seeing a
guy come open. He was in complete control of the game.
And that was the difference for Lithuania. A little disappointing,
I think for Latvia to not get any sort of
performance from their backcourt and in the way that the
Lithuanian team did, but a major step up in performance

(25:48):
by Alex Karuskovit.

Speaker 1 (25:52):
Karuskavitts. He did it man, Yeah, you're right. The back
court was a little disappointing. There was the were showing
you the photoshop that people were doing. Not a great photoshop.
I will say. It's a big ass led touva jersey
that als Caruso has on him. He's just just chilling there.
But they didn't get anything from the back court. Zagers

(26:16):
archer Zago, who's usually awesome, three of twelve, and he
had some passing, you know, because that's what he does.
He had five assists. But even though christophs Porzingis was
out there, he was into a pregame. It looked like
the most expressive emotive Kris Stops I've seen him. He
was so into this game all those Lithuanian fans were

(26:36):
there for their team, and all of the Latvian fans
obviously there for them. He was into it and he
got he got to work. I mean he had it
off the ball block, like doing his post work. He
missed a shot from mid range and winning got the
miss and put it back, and then he did the
same thing with a missed three point shot. It bounced
up so high off the rim that he went and

(26:57):
dunked that like he was getting after it. Four to
three thirty four points nineteen fricking rebounds. Was fantastic, but
they just didn't get enough from their backcourt. And you
mentioned Vilichka twenty one points twelve assists with Tubellus, that
those two guys they were key. I think they just

(27:18):
were in, as you said, in their system. And tu
Bellis was really good that apparently this is his first
Yuro basket. I was unaware of that, but he had
key buckets early or to end the third, early fourth,
eighteen points twelve rebounds for that lefty. And I mentioned
as I said, Jonas coming off the bench, and it worked.

(27:39):
I mean they they thought, I think, to keep their
switching defensively as much as part of their system as possible,
and you know it's might be a little too slow
and offensively, just keep everybody moving instead of having that
guy as a focus in the post. And it worked.
He only played nine to forty seven, had nine points,
even though he's a legend. Yeah, he had no problem

(28:00):
doing that. I imagined, so very very fun game. Yeah, yeah,
we love.

Speaker 2 (28:05):
JV, but he is slowness Valancunas and Porzingis has legitimately
incredible range, especially in a EuroBasket tournament where it looks
like he's pulling up from half court on some of
his three So smart moved by the Lithuanian coach to
go with their more mobile guys to try and do
something against Porzing. Yes, it didn't necessarily work, but at
least the strategy makes sense.

Speaker 1 (28:26):
And it makes sense for both of the teams of
those guys coming into the NBA to be excited. Chriss
porzingis looking way more like himself for the Atlanta Hawks,
while even though valan chun Is coming off the bench,
that's what he's going to be doing for the Denver Nuggets,
and he did it well. He did it well throughout
this this tournament, and he had no problem coming off
the bench in a couple of games. He did it

(28:47):
versus Sweden as well. All right, let's move on to
France Georgia, where Georgia upset France.

Speaker 2 (28:54):
Although France didn't.

Speaker 1 (28:55):
Look like themselves throughout the early part of this tournament
without Wemby, they needed more from some of their guys.
They're deep, but they're super young, and Georgia took care
of it.

Speaker 2 (29:07):
Trey, Yeah, I saw after the game. Mam Wu said,
too bad Wemby wasn't here, because we would have beat
him if he was playing anyways, and maybe they would have.
Mam Wu had a pretty solid game fourteen points and
eleven rebounds. But we talked about how France has good
depth on the wing and they've got some good young
big guys, but maybe their back court was going to

(29:28):
be their Achilles heel, and it ended up being their
Achilles heel. Baldwin twenty four points for the Georgian team,
tornication Galia twenty four points as well. I thought they
both completely outplayed the French backcourt. It was shen Galia
early he hit a rondo the announcers couldn't believe it,
and then later on Kamar Baldwin was just getting hot

(29:49):
on the step back three, and then once they had
to respect the jumper, it was easy pickings getting in
the lane. France went six of thirty six from three.
Their team isn't the team that we're going to see
from France down the line, but some good experience for
those guys. Georgia has been one of the most fun
teams to watch because I didn't think it was just
Mamu taken over. Goga had an okay game. He got pulled,

(30:12):
he got very angry in the first half, but then
they just needed him to rebound later on, so he
came in and rebounded while the guards took over. That
was the difference was the backcourt.

Speaker 1 (30:22):
Yeah, you're right, France didn't have it, while Kamar Baldwin
comes in screating his own threes. He didn't need any help,
and he had fourteen first half points. Even in the
late real real key bucket with three forty left hit
the dcell. He was the best guard in this game,
no doubt. While France couldn't get enough from Isaiah Cordonnier'd

(30:45):
be great to have him in the NBA because I
know we're losers and nerds, and we look at the
spelling and we've never had an Isaiah spelled the way
he does it. I aia, that's it. And he was
a second round pick but never never made it to
the NBA. Other than that, I mean they were looked.

(31:05):
The thing is with this team, they go through Yabucel
over and over and over again, and he was doing
a lot. He was their guy, but they just couldn't
get enough from Bill Alkolibali, who was silent in this game.

Speaker 2 (31:20):
He had a stinker of a tournament. If we're being
quite honest, this guy was awesome in the Olympic Tournament
last summer, played major fourth quarter minutes in the loss
to the US, and I think he was like six
points per game, didn't score at all, and he just
looked kind of lost on the court after a pretty
solid start. I think he had a really good game

(31:40):
in their very first game, but it was like the
first game, yeah, exactly. You could tell he was just
the best wing athlete on the court. Every time he
caught the ball, he was able to put it down
and get to the hoop. Once the competition stepped up
a little bit, Koolibali was invisible.

Speaker 1 (31:54):
Yeah, I don't know if it's the environment, just being
in La Fiel the Nation round, because it felt like
him in Zachary Risachet, who's twenty. His first run when
he stepped on the floor coming off the bench, it
was a bad one. I mean, he just pushed to
Georgian to get a foul and then he missed two threes.
He missed a put back and then another foul and

(32:16):
then he went to the bench. I mean it was
it was bad. He got better as the game went on,
he got better than what Kolibali did, but it felt
like Coolbali in the first game was coming into his
own a little bit. But in this game, I mean,
he really could have had to steal the first possession,
but he just wasn't wasn't mentally there whatever was going on. Now,
he got a butt screen by Shngalia where it hit

(32:36):
his hip and he was holding his hip a little bit,
and he did shut down Mamu who I would give
him the MVP just because he talks so much and
I like hearing him talking. I want to see him
on the Raptors as a backup. But Kolbali just just
wasn't all mentally there. And that was I was a
problem for France. I mean, as I said, they were

(32:58):
relying on Yabusele. They had guys out there at cool
Vallei and Cordonier and Maledon, and you'd think a Cobo
or Francisco would come on and help out, but they didn't.
It was just it was more a good defensive effort
from Jet but no real great offensive. Like you mentioned
the Shengalia Rondo ball fake and you mentioned or you

(33:22):
said his name with a great pronunciation. Can you give
me that again, because I don't know how to pronounce this.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
Shengalia. Wasn't he a one time Brooklyn Net I'm not mistaken.
He probably has a ring or profile written about him.
He had three or four good games. So that's enough.
In the first quarter of this game, in the first quarter,
not five minutes in, One announcer says to the other,
just want to say, Jeff, the Georgian team has some
great beards. Jeff replies, they do. It felt to me

(33:56):
like other guy was legitimately impressed by the beards that
the Georgie the team was playing with. But I'm sure
he had seen them at some point. It couldn't have
been their first thing. I don't know.

Speaker 1 (34:09):
Yeah, it seemed like to me those guys were also
doing multiple games a day, and I think they're a
little a little tired. Jeff and the other guy whose
name was never said, what is.

Speaker 2 (34:19):
The other guy? The other guy always says Jeff.

Speaker 1 (34:23):
Yeah he does. It's like you see what they're running here,
Jeff and the other I would never say his name,
and I thought he kind of sounded like Jim Peterson,
who was the Timberwolves analyst.

Speaker 2 (34:31):
He does.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
Look and I'm googling, is Jim Peterson in laughy a.
Is he doing the EuroBasket? And he was in France.
He was close, But I don't think that was Jim.
No one knows what that guy's name is. I couldn't
find that guy's name, and he all he was saying
was I think Jeff asked him, you know, what are
you gonna do after this tournament. You're gonna go out,
You're gonna have some fun, and he said, oh yeah,
oh yeah, I'm gonna go out. I'm gonna go walk

(34:53):
and see the streets. I think he was just done working.
That's That's really no good story there. That's all I
gotta say about that.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
All right.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
Moving on to Turkey Sweden, because we were looking forward
to Turkey going into the elimination round, and they took
care of Sweden, although again got close, but Alprin Shangun awesome,
Turkey looking like a real squad from one to the bench, Trey.

Speaker 2 (35:20):
Please task call him Daddy Shangun twenty four point sixteen rebounds,
six assists, and two blocks. I didn't necessarily think this
was Sheng Goon's best game, just eight for sixteen from
the field, but he made a ton of big plays
down the stretch after the Swedes made a pretty decent
comeback in the fourth quarter. It was Sheng Goon getting
busy on the offensive glass or creating for others. He

(35:41):
is kind of the definition of the euro step right now.
I feel like every single one of his baskets in
the lane is him sidestepping a guy as he's rumbling down.
I would probably if they put it to a vote
right now, I would vote for Schenggun as MVP of
the tournament. So far, I wouldn't be surprised at all
to see Turkey pull off and upset and win this

(36:02):
whole tournament. They're completely clicking right now, and they're all
just riding on the back of Daddy Shangun.

Speaker 1 (36:09):
Yeah, you're you're totally right. I would definitely think about it.
I think Jannis has missed two games. If we're going
to get into the the finer print here and think
about Luca obviously was great. The fans out there calling
MVP for like basically anybody out there is hilarious. They're
chanting MVP literally for anybody. But Shangun has been so

(36:33):
so good, especially because he had such a great game
against Jokic. I mean, he's shaken defenders. You mentioned the
euro step that he's he's dropping guys when doubles are
coming for him. He's so ready that the assists are
so high. He had a great pass to Ursanosmani when
he's playing the two man game with Shane Larkin, so
they're just they're just clicking. The only thing not clicking

(36:55):
for him is the opening tip pass that he's trying
every game, which is fun, Like he just tries to hammer.
It's it's a slap like you go get it. Sometimes
it works, sometimes it doesn't. But those guys I couldn't
believe watching again, Sweden was hanging in. It was the
fourth quarter but Jeddy Osmin was so awesome in this game.
He had his first four to three pointers in this game,

(37:16):
he had seventeen points. Adam Bona coming off the bench,
did not expect this from him, but three big blocks
off the bench and under two minutes left yet hit
his last one. It was a huge one. So he's
going to be coming off the bench for the seventy
six ers. I think he's he's growing more into that
type of role. And Shane Larkin, as I said, that
guy plays almost every minute when he's out there for

(37:39):
this team, like literally almost every minute, and he does
his job out there. So this team is looking like
a strong squad going up against Poland in their quarterfinal game,
mainly because of Shangoun, but then everybody else falls in line.

Speaker 2 (37:53):
Yeah, they've just got a really solid lineup, and like
you're saying, they are a little bit of Thibodeau ball
where they're starting five plays heavy, heavy minutes, and that
even went up at the start of the knockout phase.
But you know, it's only another week of EuroBasket. So
if Shane Larkin is comfortable going thirty seven minutes able
to still produce laden games, that's probably how they're gonna

(38:15):
roll those minutes, probably get even bigger and bigger room
to get into like the semi finals and finals. Wouldn't
be surprising to see guys playing thirty eight, thirty nine,
forty minutes even.

Speaker 1 (38:24):
Yeah, and that's what Larkin does. I will say about Sweden,
there are one four going into this game, so it's
a pretty big win for them. I think to keep
it fairly close till the end. And I'm pretty sold
by guys being their Foeba cells and even I'm not
super sold on Pelly Larson contributing to the Miami Heat
this coming season, but he had a good turnment, so

(38:48):
that's it. That's so solid. It was a solid, solid,
Speaking of solid guys, our last quarter final, or I
should say last game of the round of sixteen that
we're going to get to Poland beating Bosnia, our man
Jordan Lloyd being Jordan Lloyd again, twenty eight points to
take out Bosnia as they move on to the quarter finals. Great,

(39:11):
great showing for Poland thus far.

Speaker 2 (39:13):
Yeah, and I think Jordan Lloyd's probably an all tournament
team guy, at least if they do two teams, he's
certainly on there. Maybe he got Shrewder and Luca ahead
of them as guards. But outside of that, I don't
think there's anybody on par with what Jordan Lloyd's been
able to do for them. Like you said, twenty eight points,
only one assist. He was out there looking to score.
I thought Punitka had a really solid game as well,

(39:35):
nineteen points, eleven boards. They got a solid one two punch,
and I just feel like Poland has been taking care
of business. They haven't had any crazy wins, I don't
think so far, but every single night, or I guess
for us, it's an afternoon, they go out there and
they look like a quality team who knows how to
play well together.

Speaker 1 (39:54):
I see this note here and I guess it's correct. Sorry.
Going back to the jerseys, we talked about the first
names being on the jerseys and Bim Bambino saying that, hey,
they've got the front of their or their first names
on the back of their jerseys because their brothers are
on the team, like Fronz and Mo Wagner and Tristan

(40:17):
and Oscar de Silva. So what happens? I guess they
both there was a I guess Moe had his on
his name on his jersey last.

Speaker 2 (40:25):
Year, I'd say, Moritz, I feel like.

Speaker 1 (40:27):
Oh yeah yeah. Anyway, although I like this this note here,
This is Skeet's chiming in that Jordan Lloyd needs Jordan
on the back of his jersey right now.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
He's playing like a Jordan right now, scoring like crazy,
had a huge block off the glass as well. He's
found where he fits in. I believe you know. He
was kind of a bit dude for the Raptors and
the little cup of coffee he had, but looks like
an absolute star. He's the new Rhndez Hollis Jefferson as
far as I'm concerned.

Speaker 1 (41:01):
That's a great comparison. I think Jordan Lloyd needs to
be asked by somebody out there in Europe if he
thinks that Kawhi was paid off by the Clippers. Were
they circumventing the salary cap? Because you know Kawhi, you
know him. Give us the details, Jordan Lloyd, what's going
on with Steve Balmer? As we show you a clip

(41:23):
here on YouTube of Steve Bomber given some thigh rubs
years ago at a Clippers game. That was a weird one.
But this dude, I will say this is his first
appearance as a Polish player. I mean he's never played
in Poland. Is he somehow circumventing the rules to be

(41:44):
able to play for Poland? Just making that up you
basically can naturalize a lot of players. But yeah, he
was awesome. Man the Ronde Hollis Jefferson. That's a good
one because we may be seeing peak Jordan Lloyd right now.
But he's playing, he's playing so well. It will be

(42:05):
interesting to see them against Turkey because the Poland's playing
at a really high level. Their entire team, Uh, they've
got they've got so many guys helping out. But Turkey
is playing so so well. So that side of the
bracket of those two with Lithuania and Greece, as we
show you here on YouTube, what the bracket is Lithuania, Greece,

(42:28):
Turkey and Pulled on one side, and on the other
it's Germany Slovenia which should be a freaking great game
in Finland and Georgia as your last quarterfinal. So those
are the eight teams. Again, they happen on Tuesday, Wednesday.
We will be back to talk about it on Wednesday.
Anything else to add basketball wise, Trey, do.

Speaker 2 (42:47):
You feel confident in the Greece Lithuania game. There ain't
nobody to match up with Jannis for the Lithuanian team.
I don't think they're going to start Jonis in this case.
I don't necessar really know who could handle him. But
it's also tough to beat a team like Lithuania basically
single handedly. But maybe jannist can do it.

Speaker 1 (43:08):
Yeah. No, it's a toss up whether the Greeks get
something out from from their guards a little bit because
they did get some, they got to get some a
little bit more because Lithuania is getting plenty from their guards.
So coin flip for me. Turkey I think should be
the favorite.

Speaker 2 (43:25):
In the other one, Poland is, like you're saying there,
they're a deep team and they play as a team
as well. I think that's a pretty solid matchup Turkey
and Poland. And you know, the Germany versus Slovenia game
is kind of similar to Greece Lithuania. Can one guy
beat a great team? And then I'm hyped for Finland
versus Georgia. These are like the two Cinderella teams. It's
kind of unfortunate they have to meet against each other

(43:48):
so early. It would be awesome if they could somehow
find a way to meet up like in the semi finals.
But that one should be pretty fun to watch. I
think I wouldn't. I think I would favor Finland just
because the five out offense. It's maybe a little tough
for guys like Goga and whoever there are other big
dude who comes off the bench for Georgia is he's
not the quickest dude as well, he's got some gray

(44:10):
in the hair like me and you. So I think
I'm favoriting Finland in that one.

Speaker 1 (44:15):
That's a good call, and whatever happens, it's totally cool
and totally right. If EuroBasket tweets, that is the biggest
win for Finland and their euro Basket history or Georgia
same thing, same thing, no matter who wins. I think
it is the biggest win for them going into the
semifinals and literally up for winning a medal. That would

(44:38):
be huge for both those countries. And that's it for us.
We'll be back on Wednesday to talk about those quarterfinal games.
If you haven't seen our latest episode of Jurassic Pals,
it's Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom. People seem to like it.

Speaker 2 (44:55):
Had some friends. I got to watch Fallen Kingdom this
weekend and they're tuning in and watching it and they're
feeling similar to how we did.

Speaker 1 (45:05):
Looking back, Yeah, because the part of it is kind
of like we were talking about eight games in two days.
We were taking in a lot of Jurassic Parks, and
maybe that changed our flavor of that movie. Because now
that I see I see here on YouTube, I see
the the photos or the screen grab of them sitting

(45:28):
against the was it the kitchen counter where the dinosaurs
around the corner, I'm like, yeah, that was fun, but
you know.

Speaker 2 (45:35):
Yeah, that's just me being nostalduseum. Yeah maybe. I mean
we watched a lot of them, recorded a lot of
them at the same time. So then this weekend when
I saw Jurassic Park was playing on TNT, I was like, oh,
I can't watch Jurassic Park again. But then guess I
turned it back on and it was at the t
Rex at the fence scene. I felt like it was

(45:56):
perfect timing and I was one hundred percent back in.
So what maybe fall Kingdom is good. Maybe it is
if you spread it out a little bit. I'm not
dipping in right now. To see, but maybe just maybe
tune into the podcast to find out.

Speaker 1 (46:11):
All right, that's it for us, unless, well, I'm gonna
go watch something on TNT. You never know what movies
they're thrown up on TNT and they're always good. They're
always good. So that's where I'm going right now. But
for now, Clipper bros.

Speaker 2 (46:25):
You heard it here first, have a great time, turn up,
love you guys awesome. Thanks for joining us, and remember
this was the greatest EuroBasket podcast of the century. That
is correct.

Speaker 1 (46:36):
Hopefully we top it on Wednesday after the quarterfinals. See everybody,

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
