No Nonsense Catholic

Good information about the Catholic faith is more readily available today than ever before. Yet, there is still widespread confusion about Catholic belief and practice. Officially, it is the job of the Catholic bishops to clear up such confusion. But in the current reality, lay Catholics need to take it upon themselves to know, share, and defend their faith.Every week Catholic author and speaker Matthew Arnold gives clear and simple witness to the Catholic Faith without obscuring, complicating, or watering down the exclusive claims of Christ and His Church. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ said, “I am the way and the truth and the life… and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 14.6; 8.32). And that is no nonsense.

https://youtu.be/boIY9jk6hOE Christians generally agree that after death we will face judgment, and consequently spend eternity with God in HEAVEN, or eternally SEPARATED from him in hell. But while faithful Christians (Protestant and Catholic alike) take heaven and hell as given, the question arises: what about purgatory? Where is purgatory in the Bible? Does the Catholic Church still teach purgatory or did that “go out with V...

https://youtu.be/fS8utSbfRFE The practice of Biblical apologetics is vital for Catholics in defending and sharing the Faith. But even more fundamentally, Biblical apologetics is essential for keeping the Faith. A deeper, Biblical understanding of Catholicism not only fosters spiritual growth but builds up resilience against doubts and challenges.

https://youtu.be/5EuhlGuc2Ls My last video (NNC Podcast 18: What did Jesus Really Say about Being "Born Again") exposed the biblical evidence for the necessity of Baptism. This prompted a number of comments from our "separated brethren" challenging the historical Christian understanding of being “born from above of water and the Spirit” (John 3:5). Several commentors asked “What about the Good Thief?” Others condemned infant ba...

https://youtu.be/9m3B-3el4zQ Once upon a time it was de rigueur for Fundamentalist door-to-door evangelists to open with the question, “Have you been born again?” But it is a simple fact of history that the term “born-again Christian” only became common in the 1970s. But, despite its relative novelty in the 2000 year history of the church, being “born again” is an allusion to Scripture. The question is: What was Jesus really ta...

Jesus taught the Apostles to understand “all that was said about him” (Luke 24:25-27; 45) in the OT Scriptures. In His earthly ministry Christ gathered disciples in a way that, from this perspective, would be easily understood as a hierarchy of discipleship. Also, no nonsense Catholic responses to accusations of so-called "paganism" that rear their ugly heads every time there's a new Pope! https://youtu.be/zw49GlLY7R0

Even though some non-Catholics will admit the primacy of the Bishop of Rome as "primus inter pares" (first among equals), only the Catholic Church holds the doctrine of Papal Supremacy. But why, when the word “pope” isn’t even in the Bible? It is true the word ‘pope’ isn’t in the Bible, but there are lots of words that aren’t in the Bible – words like “Trinity,” “Incarnation,” “Ascension,” and so on. Yet our separated brethren will...

https://youtu.be/3tm0xd6HrW0 The final installment of a trilogy of sorts on the Catholic priesthood addressing two classics of Catholic kryptonite: "Why do Catholics confess their sins to a priest, when only God can forgive sins?" And, "Why do Catholics call their priests 'Father,' when Jesus said call no man on earth your father?" Plus a follow-up on clerical celibacy.

The biblical understanding of clerical celibacy is grounded in the example of Christ, the teachings of St. Paul, the historical practices of the early Church, and the spiritual benefits that arise from this commitment. Clerical celibacy is not merely a rule but a profound expression of love, dedication, and service to God and His people. It allows priests to live out their vocation with a singular focus, embodying the sacrificial l...

The Catholic understanding of the ministerial priesthood is deeply rooted in Scripture and Tradition and centers around several key themes: the establishment of the priesthood in the Old Testament, the fulfillment of that priesthood in Christ, and the continuation of Christ's priestly ministry through the Apostles and their successors. All the Christian communities that can trace themselves to Christ and the Apostles (Latin and Eas...

As promised in the last podcast, we look at the Biblical evidence for the Catholic understanding of the Holy Mass as a true sacrifice. Including why we should not view Christ’s sacrifice on the cross in isolation from the Last Supper -- or for that matter, from the rest of His redemptive work. As well as what it means when Christ says He offered His sacrifice, “once for all.” https://youtu.be/1OdE9AGAW1A

https://youtu.be/GlBPX18IQPE Perhaps no other doctrine of the Catholic Church is more objectionable to our separated brethren than the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. But the Bible and the Early Church Fathers clearly teach that the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ - as the majority of the Christians in the world believe.

https://youtu.be/IKw-zCSEDuM Salvation is a gift from God, made possible through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ which involves being reconciled with God and receiving forgiveness for sins. But is salvation a process that involves the Church, which is the body of Christ, or are we saved by "faith alone" as some Protestant/evangelical/fundamentalist Christians believe? And what does the Church really teach abou...

https://youtu.be/UJvB_rfK_Os Reading the Bible today is a very different proposition than it was in the 1st Century, as a little history and common sense makes clear. It has been rightly said that "a text out of context is a subtext for a pretext!" And, contrary to the opinion of some modern Christians, reading Sacred Scripture "in context" begins with the context for which it was written, namely, the Holy Liturgy.

Some non-Catholics have Biblical objections to Catholicism that they think will admit of no answer at all, much less a Biblical one. I call this "Katholic Kryptonite." Most such objections are variations of "Where is that in the Bible?" But before we answer, we might ask our Fundamentalist friend, "Where did you get the Bible in the first place? " and, "Did you know that the Bible does not teach Sola Scriptura?" https://youtu.b...

One of the common objections to Catholicism is: “You say the Catholic Church is the true Church, but the words ‘Catholic Church’ are not in the Bible!” Or are they? 150 years ago, James Cardinal Gibbons said, “The Catholic Church is persistently misrepresented by the most powerful vehicles of information,” and “Those who make these slanderous statements are surprised if we feel indignant… We have been vilified so long, that they think we have no right to complain!” I’m sorry to say that both statements still ring true today. The question is, "With so much good information so readily available ...
