Shannon (00:00):
Uh, I didn't know I was on speakerphone.
(00:02):
It's like, obviously I would never call
you a slut to your face.
Leif (00:17):
Hey, Upper east siders, and all you scandal loving listeners out
there, you just tuned into the non judging breakfast pod
where the coffee is strong, the waffles are
fresh, and the gossip is hotter than ever. My name
is Leif and I'm, um, your seasoned Gossip Girl veteran.
St (00:32):
And I'm Steve. The newbie, the greenhorn,
the. I don't know, Leif. What, uh, am I now that we're in season
three?
Leif (00:39):
I'm not sure, but settlements are for the guilty celebrities
who run over people. The Catholic church, me, now.
St (00:44):
Yeah, but I feel like you settle for me every week, Leaf.
Leif (00:48):
True.
St (00:50):
So here's the deal, folks. Leaf has been
watching Gossip Girl since it first aired, and I'm diving
in for the first time. And to get together, we're your dynamic
duo, bringing you all the droma drama,
romance, and questionable fashion
choices of this iconic 2007
series.
Leif (01:07):
Bring your magnifying glasses, because each week we're dissecting
every juicy detail of the show one episode at a time.
We'll connect the dots, uncover those sneaky little Easter
eggs, and of course, serve up some piping hot behind the
scenes tea. And expect some iconic moments from
fandom. Because what's a deep dive without a little drama?
St (01:25):
And since we are all about inclusivity here at the non
judging breakfast pod, there is always a seat for you
at the non judging breakfast table. So go ahead
and grab your mimosa or maybe
some of, uh, Chuck's special medicine or your cup of coffee and
let's get into this.
Leif (01:41):
Well, today we're not settling just for you, Steve, because
we have a guest.
St (01:45):
That we've settled for a couple times.
Leif (01:47):
Before she's back for the third time.
Shannon Kelly.
Shannon (01:51):
Hello. I'm here.
St (01:53):
Be funny, Shannon.
Shannon (01:54):
Man, I can't. For this episode.
Leif (01:59):
Drink more coffee.
Shannon (02:01):
Gladly.
Leif (02:03):
So, uh, how much Gossip Girl have you watched since
you've last been on?
Shannon (02:07):
I watched the two episodes prior to this one.
Uh, I did not rewatch all of season three.
I couldn't do it.
Season three is like a dip for me in terms of
entertainment value.
Leif (02:21):
I like the college stuff at the beginning, but they
phased that out pretty quick, and now we're in the
deep part of the soap opera territory. Chuck's
mom storyline.
Shannon (02:31):
Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
St (02:32):
Well, and it's funny because I actually remember way
earlier on wishing that we had Shannon on because she's such
a Georgina fan. No, uh, Georgina in the beginning
of this season, I think is awesome.
Shannon (02:44):
Yeah.
St (02:45):
I thought that I hated her in season one.
Leif (02:47):
The dangina ship.
St (02:49):
Yeah.
Leif (02:50):
In full force.
St (02:52):
Yeah. It was
fantastic. I loved that. I
loved her role. End of season two and beginning of season
three, I thought.
Leif (03:01):
Yeah. You missed Steve's whole turn to liking
Georgina.
Shannon (03:04):
Yeah, I did miss that. Uh, that would have been interesting.
St (03:07):
I did a 180 complete
180.
Leif (03:11):
And it totally makes sense because in, um, season one, I think they
were still writing the character, thinking it was going to be Misha Barton.
Shannon (03:18):
Yeah, fair enough. It's interesting because I've been
rewatching House recently, and,
like, all the characters of Gossip Girl make little
appearances on there. And, uh, Michelle Trachtenberg
has a whole episode where she's like.
Like, kind of like a bubble boy type of situation where she. Her
parents are like, you're always sick, so stay in your room. Uh, but
then Blair has a little cameo appearance for a few
(03:40):
episodes, and so does Kevin Zieger has an episode as well.
So I just like watching how I was like, gossip Girl. Gossip Girl. Gossip
Girl.
Leif (03:48):
Yeah. I've actually. I finally found the Bedford
Diaries, which was a Penn Badgley
show before the mountain and before Gossip Girl.
Shannon (03:56):
Oh, I've not seen that.
Leif (03:58):
I'm surprised it didn't get a second season. It also has, uh,
Milo Vetimiglia in it.
St (04:03):
M. Um.
Leif (04:06):
Did you watch One Tree Hill?
Shannon (04:07):
Yeah, of course.
Leif (04:10):
The actual Derek, not the fake Derek.
The black guy is in it. He's a main character in this.
Derek Payton's, uh, brother.
Shannon (04:20):
Oh, uh, yeah, I forgot about that
storyline.
Leif (04:23):
Not psycho Derek, the actual Derek.
Shannon (04:27):
Okay. Yeah, yeah,
yeah.
Leif (04:30):
I've watched, like, two episodes so far. It's not bad.
Shannon (04:33):
You guys do a One Tree Hill podcast after this?
Leif (04:35):
Possibly.
That's a long one.
Shannon (04:40):
Can I be on every episode?
St (04:42):
Nine.
Leif (04:42):
Nine seasons, yeah. Ah.
St (04:44):
And I. Yeah. That is one I have not seen, though.
Is that the religious one?
Leif (04:48):
No, uh, it's basketball one.
Shannon (04:50):
Yeah.
St (04:50):
Oh, okay.
Shannon (04:51):
The, like, half brothers from separate sides of the
track.
Leif (04:57):
So one more thing before we get started. I was reading Reddit
this week, and, uh, there's a thread about people
complaining about Chuck Bass's facial expressions.
And there's one particular comment that stood out, and I got
their permission to use it. It was from user
dryice34.
Same crying emoji. My boyfriend was
like, why is this MF always whispering and
(05:20):
shaping his mouth like a butthole? Lmao.
Ah, Cry emoji. Cry
emoji. Cry emoji. I haven't unseen it since.
St (05:28):
Oh, no, I will never unsee
that.
Shannon (05:32):
Yeah, it is like the pursed parted
lips.
St (05:36):
The whole lips.
Shannon (05:42):
Oh, no.
St (05:43):
Yeah, I thought that was awesome. Chug bass.
Leif (05:47):
Passes an ass.
Shannon (05:50):
Good.
Leif (05:51):
And, uh, we are here to talk about season three,
episode 15, the 16
year old virgin original air
dates March 22, 2010 and
obviously based on the movie, the 40 year old
version.
St (06:05):
Yeah. Uh, would have just come out. I think that came out in
07.0505.
Leif (06:10):
Yes.
St (06:11):
Right. Oh, wow. Okay. Yeah.
Leif (06:13):
That was kind of Judd Apatow's first big break. Yeah, he already done
Freaks and Geeks, but that was obviously not that bad because it got canceled.
St (06:19):
Yeah.
Shannon (06:21):
Biggest trend to me.
St (06:22):
Oh, I do a Freaks. And I love Freaks and Geeks. Yeah.
Leif (06:25):
And then he also did Undeclared right after that, which is also good.
St (06:29):
Uh, yeah, Undeclared. I really liked a lot of
it. I hated when they did like, fraternity stuff because.
But I always get cringy whenever they do fraternity eternity
stuff because it's so over the top.
Leif (06:41):
But this episode was written once again by
Layla Gerstein. M. Previously wrote
Southern Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Rufus
Getting Married, and the Last Days of the Disco Stick just a few episodes
ago. Yeah.
St (06:55):
Yeah.
I mean, the Last Days of the Disco Stick has so
far my favorite opening scene
of Gossip Girl. Because it's right after the threesome. Uh,
and so Dan's like, walking down the street, high fiving
strangers. Yeah. The spin move.
High five. Best.
(07:17):
Best cold. No, not cold open, but best opening
scene.
Shannon (07:20):
Yeah.
Leif (07:22):
Episode directed by Wendy
Stanzler is her first and only episode of the
show. But 79 different shows she's
directed on.
St (07:31):
Wow.
Shannon (07:31):
Geez.
Leif (07:32):
Including Glee, Grey's Anatomy, Sex and the City,
Dollhouse, and a whole bunch of other stuff.
St (07:37):
Wow. So she knows her way around tv.
Leif (07:40):
Yes.
St (07:41):
And clearly gets hired.
Leif (07:42):
Mhm.
St (07:44):
Which I have no complaints on the directing.
Leif (07:46):
I don't think in this one, directing was
fine.
St (07:49):
Yeah.
Leif (07:50):
Steve, why don't you give us that vulture recap?
St (07:53):
All right. The expected loss of a
16 year old Jenny Humphrey's virginity was the
centerpiece of last night's episode of Gossip Girl.
As with most small inbred cultures, the
deflowering of this Upper east sider
cumbrooklinite became something
of a community affair.
(08:13):
Jenny's father, her stepmother, her
brother, and Nate all weighed in with their thoughts about
the emotional and physical consequences such an
act might have. Stepsister Serena
directed the younger girl toward a, uh, Patrick Swayze
movie for sex tips. And we're sure that
where and uh, we're sure that were Dorota
(08:34):
and Vanya around, they would have ordered advice
on pregnancy protection. None of
this, in the end, was needed. Damian
turned out to be a callous and unworthy suitor,
and Jenny was left not broken
hymened, but brokenhearted.
Shannon (08:50):
Not broken hymen.
St (08:52):
But this sad little story seemed
indeed like kid stuff compared to the
metaphorical screwing that was going on elsewhere.
Clearly, Lily is still doing something
untoward behind Rufus back. And
Chuck's mother and Jack Bass
are apparently planning to double team Chuck
in a betrayal of, um, epic proportions.
(09:15):
And so it was that we realized it's not really
the people you let into your vagina that can hurt
you. It's the people you let into your heart.
Leif (09:27):
Uh. Oh, vulture.
St (09:28):
Oh, vulture.
Shannon (09:32):
Yeah, that's good. That's a good recap because, uh, I
feel like, true, the whole
idea of her losing her virginity was so.
It pales in comparison to the other stuff going on
in this episode. But we'll get into that.
Leif (09:46):
But it was by far the best story, I thought.
Well, yeah, the best plot thread.
Shannon (09:51):
Mhm.
Leif (09:51):
I mean, I don't really like how it turned out, but
yeah, as far as entertaining tv. Okay,
so we move into act one.
We get a Gossip Girl monologue
from the day he brings his new birth girl home. A
father lives in fear that someday she'll get
(10:11):
hurt, that someday she'll hate him, and
worst of all, that someday she'll grow up.
Shannon (10:17):
That's such an eye roll of a quote. Like I
hate this trope of like daddy does
what is girl to fuck? Like, I
just hate it so bad in this episode.
St (10:29):
And I'll say like as, as a girl dad, right? I have
an 18 year old daughter and when, when she was
14 and lived with us, I had
the conversation with her of you'll know
when you are ready. Yeah, you
be safe. Be respectful. Be safe
with, with your partner. Be safe and
(10:49):
respectful to yourself and respectful to your. Toward your
partner. Whoever it may, will
never talk about this again.
You know, it was this, you know, I, it was, uh,
we're. I, I'm going to have
this conversation because I'm not
ignorant to the fact that my daughter
(11:09):
is growing up and is not
the little girl who picked
that flower years ago and is in that picture that
she is now at this point even
an 18 year old. So of course she's making her
own decisions. And
I am appalled by the dads that police
(11:30):
their daughter's vaginas.
Shannon (11:32):
It's really creepy.
St (11:33):
It's so creepy.
Shannon (11:35):
Yeah. The, uh, aggressive safeguarding of
Jenny's virginity. And this episode
is so unnerving. Um. Yes.
St (11:44):
Yeah.
Leif (11:44):
It's just such a throwback to the daughter
is a property.
Shannon (11:48):
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
St (11:49):
Exactly. And you can't
sell damaged goods. Like,
if we're really looking at the origins of these
feelings that dads have towards their daughters, that's
where. Why we were taught these things.
Leif (12:06):
So we open with Jenny is leaving the law for school, and
things are extremely tense between her and Rufus
as she closes the front door behind her. She
shakes out her hair and undoes the buttons on the top of her
blouse and calls the town car to take her to the Smith
Hotel.
St (12:21):
Yeah.
Shannon (12:21):
Nice little, like, slow motion. Hair comes
down. I was like, this is very dramatic for, like, she
just put her hair down.
St (12:28):
Yeah. And. And again, when
we're talking about Rufus being such a dumb ass that
Jenny is being punished because she ran
out that one night and she snuck out, but she came home.
Right. So she wasn't that
super out of line. I get being in a little bit of trouble,
but. But he's being a huge asshole about.
Shannon (12:48):
Yeah, he's right off the bat. Yeah, he. He
constantly is with her.
St (12:52):
Yeah, you're going to have. You're going to have lunch with
Headmistress Queller every day. Was that this scene or not? Later.
Leif (12:58):
It's later.
St (12:58):
Okay, think.
Shannon (12:59):
In this scene, he is kind of like, it's school, home. School, home,
school, home.
St (13:03):
Jenny says it, but, like, I get it, dad. It's
school, home, school, home. Um, but exactly.
Leif (13:10):
Blair is on the phone with Elizabeth, making plans
to spend some time with her and Chuck. As Chuck enters the
suite, Blair hangs up the phone and Chuck announces that he
is being sued by several Empire staff members for
sexual harassment. Chuck insists that he
doesn't do that kind of thing anymore.
Blair wants to fight the woman in court, but
(13:30):
Chuck plans to settle out of court.
Shannon (13:34):
Yeah, the idea of, like, Ed Westwick playing a
character with false accusations.
St (13:43):
Now.
Leif (13:44):
We'Re thinking, no, it didn't happen until after the show is.
St (13:46):
Okay, that's what I thought. That's what I thought.
Leif (13:49):
Yeah.
Shannon (13:49):
Gave him the idea.
Leif (13:50):
Yeah.
St (13:51):
Hey, can we write this in real quick just so that I can point
to it when I'm getting sued, which.
Leif (13:56):
You know, there's a chance the writers did know about it because they,
like. Like we did in the last episode. They're definitely
poking fun at, uh, you know, that. Weinstein.
Harvey Weinstein.
St (14:06):
For sure.
Shannon (14:06):
For sure.
Leif (14:07):
Did you catch that on the last episode?
Shannon (14:09):
I didn't realize because, like, I'm so
clueless in terms of, like, when these episodes airing and,
like, what was going on at that time, if that makes sense.
Leif (14:16):
It was completely unknown. Well, I mean, it wasn't completely unknown. It
was known to people, like, within that
community. Yeah. They're like, you know, listen to blind items and stuff like that.
But it was not. Because pre. Me too. And.
But yeah. So the character. One of the NYU
characters is Willow Weinstein. And it was implied that
her, uh. She's related to someone powerful in
(14:36):
Hollywood and she's very inappropriate.
St (14:40):
Yeah.
Leif (14:40):
And yes, she's shown her
sexually without giving.
Here, look at my sex tape. Without any
foreknowledge.
St (14:50):
And also wrote, like, a raunchy sex
play.
Leif (14:54):
Yeah, but that.
St (14:55):
I mean, that's very college humor, though.
Leif (14:57):
Yeah. It was a.
St (14:58):
What?
Leif (14:59):
Not burlesque, but cabernet.
St (15:01):
Cabaret.
Leif (15:01):
Yeah, cabaret. Lily
stops by the loft under the premise of being worried
about Jenny, but really she wants to talk about
Holland. However, before she can,
Rufus gets a call from Queller letting him know that Jenny has
been skipping classes all week.
Shannon (15:19):
I hate his line in the scene. It was like the. The
Hulk was furious. And Jed. There's no word
for what Jenny is like, what does that mean? I
don't like.
St (15:28):
And I love how he's like, no, she's really mad. And it's
like, why Rufus?
Shannon (15:32):
Yeah, right.
St (15:34):
Why is she really.
Shannon (15:35):
It's like. And he's acting like she's, like, so
overreacting. And it's like, she's been pretty, like,
even tempered.
St (15:42):
Yeah.
Leif (15:43):
I think she accepts her.
Shannon (15:44):
She's annoyed more than furious
for.
St (15:48):
For the knowledge that Rufus
has. This kid really
isn't. Hasn't done anything to seem
like a bad kid. Like, he brought these drugs over
because he panicked and didn't know what to do. That's the story
he gave.
Shannon (16:03):
Yeah.
St (16:03):
That Rufus seemed to accept the story.
Shannon (16:06):
Yeah.
St (16:07):
So it's. So, yes, we
learned Damien is a creep. And yes.
Automatic feeder.
Sorry.
Leif (16:18):
Cat needs to be fed.
St (16:20):
Cat needs to be fed. Sorry about that.
Shannon (16:26):
Right. Okay. M. The Damian seat. Like, he seemed to buy
Damian's story.
St (16:30):
Uh, yeah. And Damian really, on the
surface right now, isn't
a bad guy.
Shannon (16:38):
Yeah. And especially the way, like, he interacted with the parents.
Like, that is, like, he was very respectful in the way
he spoke in the last episode. And, like, a
very direct.
St (16:48):
And he fall for Jenny and
stepped up with that and all
of those things. So I just feel like
Rufus being like, wow, yeah, Jenny sure is
mad. But yeah, Rufus. Cause you
overreacted again
to something that Jenny did. Mhm. And
(17:09):
yeah, it's. It also kind of really
pisses me off that he was kind of right
about him too.
Shannon (17:16):
Yeah, you know, me too.
St (17:18):
I really hate when this show
rewards people for dumb,
bad, stupid behavior.
Leif (17:26):
We'll get to it at the end there. But I thought that ending was
bad characterization and bad writing.
Shannon (17:31):
Yeah. Um, I agree. I agree 100%. I
like, I do have that, like, note for later, and I feel like.
St (17:38):
I felt like his contract was up.
Shannon (17:39):
Yeah.
St (17:41):
And yeah, also, this is where we learned that the
party of the week is in honors for
Bart Bass.
Shannon (17:47):
Oh, yeah.
Leif (17:49):
The New York Historical Society.
St (17:51):
Yes.
Leif (17:54):
Nate and Serena are just wrapping up sexy time.
Serena gets a text from Rufus, who is worried about
Jenny is with Damien. Serena then
educates Nate on the appeal of bad boys and both want to
protect Jenny from Damien.
Shannon (18:07):
Every time I see Serena and Nate together, I think about.
You're like the one time leaf. I remember you
saying, uh, just two golden retrievers.
Like, oh, those two golden retrievers going at it.
St (18:21):
And it really is. What I've been saying for the past
few episodes is I love them as a
couple. They just need to be handcuffed together
at all times so neither of them
can see another pretty person
and run off with them.
Shannon (18:40):
Uh, but Serena makes the point in this scene that
Rufus is driving Jenny into
Damian's arms, which, like. Yes, exactly.
That is correct.
St (18:50):
Oh, yeah, 100%.
Leif (18:52):
Dan and Vanessa are also getting hot and heavy in
Vanessa's dorm room. They too are interrupted by a
call from Rufus.
St (19:00):
Oh, it's the keep it casual episode.
Shannon (19:03):
Yeah. My only note for this scene was Dan and Vanessa.
Ew.
Leif (19:08):
Yeah. So I. I was surprisingly
like them in the last episode. I thought the chemistry was really good. And
I like, I liked a bit about Vanessa being scared,
but yeah, it was gone this episode.
I'm already bored.
Shannon (19:22):
I like this. The, like, the little
relationship that they created in the last episode
with. With the girl like Michelle or what was her name?
Melissa. And then like. Yeah. And the. And
Paul. It's like, oh, that's funny if like those two get
together. But
yeah. I just don't care for Dan and Vanessa as a
(19:42):
couple. I don't. It doesn't interest me.
It doesn't like. I don't believe it.
Leif (19:48):
Well, my biggest problem is that it splits the cast up.
Shannon (19:50):
Yeah.
Leif (19:51):
It, you know, there. Dan and Vanessa. No. Have
no reason to be.
Shannon (19:55):
Yeah, it truly is. They're just like team Brooklyn in
Brooklyn and stay there. Yeah.
Leif (20:00):
But I did I did enjoy the chemistry in the last episode
when they were behind the little photo thing.
Shannon (20:06):
Yeah, fair.
Leif (20:07):
It got pretty hot there.
St (20:10):
But my, my notes on Dan and Vanessa for the
past several episodes have mostly been.
Yeah.
Leif (20:21):
Things are also heating up between Jenny and Damian in
a hotel room. However, Jenny pulls away before things
get NC17. Damian points out the
pattern of Jenny leaving right when things are moving towards sex.
Jenny insists she's not a virgin but likes to take her time.
Damien convinces her to make a sex date for
tonight.
Shannon (20:40):
Sex date. Every time I see Kevin Zieger's like the
very first thought I have is just air bud. I just
always think like, air bud.
Leif (20:47):
Air Bud.
Shannon (20:47):
Airbud.
Leif (20:50):
I remember he was also in a small delta. He was in an upset.
Um, he was a freak of the week.
St (20:55):
He does like oh, early. Right. Wasn't that
like three or four? Maybe M. Three or four. Yeah, I think I remember that.
Shannon (21:00):
I did. He was like in Fear the Walking Dead and also
dawn of uh, the Dead Red. So I feel like he's done some
like zombie horror stuff too. But it's just, I
don't know, every time I see him I just think like, that's the boy
did air Bud. He always plays
like a bad boy too.
St (21:17):
And, and in this scene I didn't
think that especially the first part of what he says. I
don't think he's out of line.
Shannon (21:25):
No. He sits super reasonable on that scene and like
he's speaking with.
St (21:28):
When I'm dating someone, I, I expect this to be
part of the equation.
Shannon (21:32):
Yeah.
St (21:33):
And so please talk to me about it and what's
going on.
Shannon (21:37):
Yeah.
St (21:37):
Now at the end when he's like,
so tonight, right?
Shannon (21:42):
No rush. No, no rush.
St (21:44):
No rush. But tonight. But we're going to do it tonight.
No rush.
Shannon (21:48):
My only note for like Jenny in this episode or like
in the scene is like if you're not ready
to tell somebody that you're a virgin, you're
probably not ready to lose your virginity to that person.
Leif (22:00):
Definitely at risk.
St (22:01):
Yes. Although how many 16 year old
girls really know that?
Shannon (22:06):
Yeah.
St (22:06):
You know like you're at uh. You are 100%
correct. And yeah.
Leif (22:13):
Uh, Gossip Girl takes us to the first act break.
There's always a moment a father can't let himself
fear. The day his little J decides to
lose her big B.
St (22:30):
It's terrible.
Leif (22:32):
So silly. And uh, we
move into Act 2. Chuck and Blair and
Elizabeth are walking down the street. Elizabeth
accepts Chuck's invitation to the Historical Society
gala. The trio are interrupted by a News
crew that runs up asking Chuck to make a statement about
the sexual harassment accusations.
Chuck is embarrassed for his mother to see this and
(22:54):
ushers her and Blair inside. Before Chuck can
also get away, he gets a call from Jack giving
him a good idea who is behind the accusations.
Shannon (23:03):
I like Jack in this episode.
St (23:06):
Yeah, I think he looks terrible. Uh, his hair
is ridiculous.
Shannon (23:10):
He's just entertaining. And I feel like there was not a lot
entertaining in this episode, but he was.
St (23:16):
Jack isn't entertaining.
Leif (23:17):
I like a good villain. Let's just hope they don't try to redeem him
like they did with Chuck and Chuck. Harder.
St (23:22):
Yeah. Um,
I also. I was a
little surprised that Evelyn is still
here.
Shannon (23:31):
Yeah.
St (23:32):
Because remember, uh, my prediction at the end
of last week is we're never going to see her again. Like, oh, plotline
resolved. She's gone. Sort of like Scott.
I thought she was going to be another Scott, where it's like,
we're going to be best friends and family. From M.
Now on. Ghosted.
Leif (23:52):
Nope, she's still here, unfortunately.
St (23:54):
Yeah, yeah, let's, uh. God
damn it.
Shannon (23:59):
Chuck has a mom, and her name is Lily.
St (24:02):
Thank you.
Leif (24:06):
Back at the loft, Rufus and Lily are binding over
parenting. Rufus turns down Lily's invitation to the
gala and instead calls Serena again. Lily leaves
the scarf from last week on the table for Rufus to find.
Shannon (24:17):
Rufus, grow the floor up. Like, I don't want to celebrate
your dead husband right now. It's like, he's
dead. Like, off.
St (24:25):
Yeah, dude.
Leif (24:26):
I mean, I kind of get that because she had just cheated with her other
ex husband.
Steve (24:30):
Yeah.
Shannon (24:31):
But, like, in my. And she has the
scarf, so.
St (24:34):
Yeah, well, and. And Rufus just can't
get out of his own way, though.
Shannon (24:38):
Yeah.
St (24:39):
Is his big problem is that, like, he.
All of Rufus's problems are
problems Rufus creates.
Leif (24:46):
Yeah.
Shannon (24:46):
Yeah, I agree with that.
Leif (24:48):
But you to Rufus on his parenting of Jenny and
this because. Oh, I. I. When am I gonna see my little
girl again?
St (24:55):
Yeah.
Shannon (24:56):
Yeah.
St (24:57):
They grow up. And. And if you
can't handle that, you're not
a good parent. The goal of parenting
isn't to. There's this idea
that parenting is all about protecting
your kids at all times, but no, it's teaching them how to be
a person. Yeah, it's teaching them. And it
involves protecting them sometimes, but
(25:20):
really involves picking them up
when they up.
Shannon (25:24):
Yeah.
St (25:24):
And if you never let your kids up, then they
never learn how to deal with up.
Shannon (25:29):
Yeah, exactly. I feel like Rufus, too. It's just the
way that he speaks. Like, he's just like, he's such a
child. Like, he just. He's so passive aggressive.
And, like, it's, uh. Like, I get that you're frustrated, and I get that you're
unhappy about xyz, but, like, he's just makes little,
like, digs when he's in a bad mood. And
it's so annoying to watch. You're like. You're a grown
(25:49):
man, supposedly.
St (25:51):
Act like.
Leif (25:54):
Speaking of Serena, she and Jenny are having a little girl time
and eating froyo. Serena emphasizes the
importance of a younger woman's first time and wishes she
had waited for someone better. Waited to Shakura
boyfriend. S. It's just about then that
Nate also walks in and Serena hands off mentor duties to
him.
Shannon (26:13):
This scene was such, like, a
quick decline for me. Like, it started out I
was like, oh, thank God. Like, Jenny has someone
she can talk to and, like, and I'm glad that it's like, a
girl who's, you know, um, like, just about her age,
and it's like, they can have this, like, nice, honest
conversation. And then Serena
(26:33):
just dips into, like, the thing about your virginity
is once she loves you can never get it back. And m.
It just, like, it just skydives from there. It just nose
dives into bad from there. And I'm like.
Leif (26:44):
And then.
Shannon (26:44):
Yeah. What is with Serena's comment? Like,
I'm like, didn't she lose it to Nathan, like, who she's
with?
St (26:51):
Well, no, we, uh, we don't know that she lost it to
him. We. He lost it to her.
Shannon (26:56):
Yeah.
St (26:56):
But there it was implied that she had lost it.
Shannon (26:59):
Oh. Prior. Uh, okay.
Leif (27:02):
But she hasn't. She. It was Nate. It was
spoilers. So really, if that
hasn't been real, I'm spoiling it now.
St (27:09):
Oh, okay.
Leif (27:10):
It was Nate.
St (27:11):
Yeah.
Shannon (27:12):
That was so confused. I was watching it, and I was like, I'm pretty
sure she lost it to Nate, so I don't get, like, why
she's, like, saying that.
Leif (27:24):
Because she also talks like, I ran away afterwards because, you know,
it wasn't.
Shannon (27:28):
Yeah. I feel like it's so sad that Jenny doesn't have a single
character in this episode telling her, like,
you know what? This isn't the biggest deal ever. Like,
if you want to make it special, like, you want to wait for, uh,
someone, like, a different time, a different, different person that, like, that's
entirely your call. But, like, when you lose your virginity, that's
one time. Like, you're gonna have so many more.
St (27:48):
Times that are probably going to be more special.
Leif (27:51):
Yeah.
Shannon (27:51):
Like, don't put this much pressure on lose like,
oh, you can never get it back. Like, who
cares? Stop making this the biggest
deal ever.
St (28:00):
Yeah.
Leif (28:01):
Uh, yeah. This would have been a great time to
use Vanessa.
Shannon (28:05):
Yeah.
St (28:06):
Yes. Yeah. Vanessa.
Leif (28:08):
We established they are good friends and.
St (28:10):
Could have really been a good big sister.
Shannon (28:12):
Yeah. Yeah.
St (28:14):
Whoops.
Shannon (28:16):
But she's too busy fucking Dan. Who, like
Rufus doesn't care about that at all.
St (28:23):
Yeah, right. Dan can fuck. He's a boy.
Shannon (28:25):
Yeah, Dan can fuck.
Leif (28:27):
I love the Chetty does call out that double standard later.
St (28:29):
Yeah. Yeah.
Leif (28:31):
Chuck is going over some paperwork at the bar when he's approached
by Uncle Jack. Jack claims he had nothing to do with the
lawsuits and that uh, he is here to protect Chuck.
Jack also says he saw Evelyn's body in the
casket and whoever, uh, Elizabeth is, she can't be
his mother.
Shannon (28:46):
Love it.
St (28:47):
Yeah, I love that. I loved it.
Um, one thing that we didn't address in the
previous scene was Serena handing
Jenny over to Nate to commemorate the special
day. Go out to lunch with my
boyfriend who you dated.
Shannon (29:03):
Yeah, yeah. He was like, oh, yeah, I'll take you for
whatever want. Like, what are you in the mood for? It's like. This is
weird.
St (29:09):
It's so weird.
Shannon (29:10):
Hey, the weirdest handoff.
St (29:12):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Leif (29:13):
They. They totally changed their. The dynamic between Nate
and Jenny in this season. Like now he's like full on big
brother mode.
St (29:19):
Yeah.
Shannon (29:21):
But yeah, in this, in this next scene, I do, uh,
I like that. Blair establishes Jack's
monster class as oo.
Leif (29:32):
Yeah. As Jack is leaving, he bumps into Blair
who also suspects he is behind the lawsuit. Jack
once again denies it and makes a creepy
inference to him having had sex with Blair.
Shannon (29:43):
Yeah. But honestly, it's a good, like he has some
great lines.
Leif (29:47):
Yeah, it's great.
St (29:48):
Yeah. Jack, I, uh. Jack
owned this episode. Every, everything
he did, just strategy and lot. His
lines were great.
Shannon (29:56):
The pleasure is yours.
St (29:57):
Yeah. So gross. Does
Chuck know that they bang?
Leif (30:03):
Yes. That came out season finale of
season two.
St (30:06):
Yeah. Yeah.
Leif (30:08):
When a gospel girl is just dropping everything.
Shannon (30:10):
Yeah, I like the like the, the question of
like. Yeah, this scene leaves a lot of open
ended questions that makes this episode more interesting
for me because this idea of like, okay, like, is
this Chuck's m. Mother? Like did his mom die? And then
also like, did Jack start the rumors? If not like, who
else is out to get Chuck? And yeah, it's just like an
interesting, like, oh, I want to find
(30:33):
answers now.
St (30:34):
Um, I feel like Jack
is almost the
lawful evil type to
not come in lying about setting
him up. When Jack said, I didn't do
this.
Shannon (30:49):
Yeah.
St (30:49):
I believed him. And my mind instantly
went to Evelyn.
Shannon (30:53):
Yeah.
St (30:53):
Instantly. It was like, Jack
is really defensive about this.
And Jack is really has that attitude of
like, I had nothing to do with this.
Shannon (31:04):
Yeah. And even him saying, like, whoever did is smarter than me.
St (31:07):
Yeah. Yeah. Like I, I
believed him instantly because I, I feel like
that I, I feel like
he would do something like this, but I feel like he'd
brag about it if he did it.
Shannon (31:20):
Yeah.
St (31:20):
I feel like he would have owned it to Chuck
or, or at least not
answered directly.
Shannon (31:27):
Yeah.
St (31:28):
And so when that happened, it's like, well, who else would be out to get Chuck?
Evelyn. Mhm.
Leif (31:33):
Well, I mean, they are all in together, but I still think this is all
Jack's plan. He was just working Chuck the
whole episode.
St (31:40):
I, I, I, Oh, I don't, I agree on that.
But I don't believe Jack called
the women. Um, that Jack said. I think Jack
pulled the strings to have
Evelyn do the things, if
that makes sense.
Leif (31:57):
I think it's just planned. She doesn't seem very
capable to me.
St (32:02):
Well, right. I, I get that.
I'm. Yeah, I think he's behind it. I
think he's the mastermind, but I don't think he pulled the trigger.
Yeah, they both suck.
Leif (32:15):
Serena is setting up a romantic lunch at the
penthouse while on the phone with Nate. She explains her
plan to Nate as he stepped away from his lunch with Jenny.
Serena's plan is to entrap Damien and have Nate and
Jenny catch him in the act. Nate thinks it would be best just to
call Rufus, but Serena just bulldozes over him.
Shannon (32:32):
Oh, Serena. It's such a stupid,
like, plan. It's, it's like if anything, you're
just, if this works, you're just hurting Jenny. You're
creating a weird, like, now dynamic
between you and Jenny as well. And also like, oh, uh,
just give me exactly 45 minutes.
St (32:50):
Yeah, yeah.
Leif (32:51):
She's that confident in her.
St (32:53):
Yeah.
Leif (32:54):
Which normally she would be.
St (32:55):
Right?
Shannon (32:58):
Like, give me exactly 45 minutes and then you walk in
at that exact.
St (33:01):
Moment, which implies she's done this before.
Shannon (33:04):
Yeah.
St (33:05):
Like she knows she's got her time down. Yeah.
Shannon (33:10):
Yeah. Such an annoying little scheme.
St (33:12):
Yeah.
Shannon (33:13):
So unnecessary.
St (33:15):
Dumbest idea.
Leif (33:17):
Dan is back in the loft getting the, the Jenny
scoop from Rufus. Rufus knows he's seeing someone
new. Just before Dan can let the cat out of the bag,
Vanessa shows up. Because of course, Rufus called Vanessa
and it's time to circle the wagons.
Shannon (33:32):
She's like family.
St (33:35):
Vanessa is not my sister.
Shannon (33:38):
She loves its incest.
St (33:39):
She's a friend. She's a classmate. Yeah, it really does
love its inc.
Shannon (33:43):
Like, Dan, you will never not be your sister.
St (33:50):
Yeah, where's the Danny
relationship? The. The. The Dan,
Jenny? Because even Nate
and Jenny were, like, at the time,
living together.
Leif (34:04):
Rufus takes a call and walks into the other room.
Vanessa goes in for the kiss, but Dan pulls back and goes
into a ridiculous ramble about friends only zones and
friends with benefit zones. Even he realizes it's a
bit confusing, so he's going to make her a map.
Vanessa is unsurprisingly annoyed.
St (34:20):
The friend. The map cracked me up.
Um, when she's like. When she's like. When we're sitting
on the subway at opposite ends of the car and he's like, still gonna
make a map. That really
cracked me up. As much as I hate the, uh,
Friends with Benefits storyline, you know, we've
seen it in so many Friends did it.
(34:41):
I'm sure Simpsons did it.
I just. I hated this storyline
because I'm so. I. I knew. And it's
like, we knew it had to happen, too, because they set it up last
episode that it had to be this
stupid.
Leif (34:58):
Serena is having a candlelit lunch with Damien, who
apologizes for his behavior at the state dinner.
Serena lies and says, but, um,
Nate and I are over. I have no feelings for
him anymore. Serena then leans about
70 of the way in for the kiss, but Damien backs off and
states that he really likes Jenny.
Shannon (35:18):
I love Damien in the scene, though. Absolutely loved it.
St (35:21):
Serena's just such a dumb narcissist.
Shannon (35:23):
Yeah.
St (35:24):
Like, oh, this guy tried to. This guy tried to make a
move on me once. I'll definitely steal him away from
my little sister.
Shannon (35:31):
There are two times, like, what was delivered in this episode,
and I really liked it. And this was the first time. It was just really
funny for him to be like, oh, I actually really like Jenny
and. What?
Leif (35:46):
Nate is, uh, still out with Jenny, who is starting to become
bored. Nate ignores a call from Serena. As he
stalls long enough for Rufus to show up,
Jenny gives Nate a betrayed look.
Shannon (35:58):
I hate the chastity belt line.
Leif (36:00):
Yeah, yeah. Gossip
Girls line is,
oh, uh, looks like this virgin queen's next
accessory may be a chastity belt.
St (36:18):
In. In the
morality of Gossip Girl. I do
think that I like that Nate does the. Everyone's looking
for Jenny. I'm gonna call her dad.
Shannon (36:29):
Yeah. Definitely didn't go with his plan.
Leif (36:31):
Yeah, it's definitely much better to plan Serena's.
Shannon (36:33):
Yeah.
St (36:33):
Serena's plan is horrible. And Nate did. I
really feel Nate did the right thing. This girl's
parents are looking.
Leif (36:40):
Skipping school.
St (36:41):
Or skipping school.
Shannon (36:42):
And she got two desserts, so.
St (36:44):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
She's well fed and can go home with her
dad now.
Leif (36:51):
It was Manhattan, so that coffee was probably, like, 11 bucks.
Shannon (36:54):
Yeah.
St (36:57):
No free refills.
Leif (37:00):
We move into act three. Back in Brooklyn.
Rufus is laying down Jenny's new marching orders.
Jenny takes a shot at Rufus in marriage and storms off.
Rufus finally notices the scarf.
St (37:12):
Rufus is being a bad dad. Uh, again.
Again.
Leif (37:16):
Yeah. So this is where we get the. Her new rules are
Ruis will escort her to and from school.
Weller will have her escorted between classes
and lunch in Queller's office.
Get a job, Rufus. You have way too much time on your hands.
St (37:32):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. What are you doing?
Leif (37:35):
Or maybe at least get some couples counseling with your wife.
Shannon (37:38):
Yeah, uh, yeah.
Seriously, focus on your relationship.
Leif (37:43):
And not just, yes,
we talked about this last time. But just
as they're about to, like, really get together,
Rufus sold his gallery and no longer had a job,
so now he is just a trophy husband.
Shannon (38:00):
Yeah.
St (38:02):
Which was pointed out on a previous episode with
Holland. When he met Holland.
Leif (38:07):
I don't see you coming and going much. You're just there.
Elizabeth brings home a new purple tie to wear to the
gala. Elizabeth finds out about Jack potentially
showing up at the party and decides she can't go.
Chuck asks her to stay for a drink instead.
Uh, yeah. This set up for the DNA test later.
St (38:26):
Yeah.
Shannon (38:27):
Yeah.
St (38:30):
But also her being like, oh, Jack's gonna
be there. I don't think I'm gonna go.
Shannon (38:35):
Yeah.
St (38:36):
Is.
Leif (38:36):
Even before that, she was acting weird. Like, the whole line about. Like,
about Bart liking purple. She's like, oh, maybe he's just
fucking with people.
St (38:42):
Yeah.
Leif (38:43):
Yeah.
Shannon (38:43):
I didn't get that.
Leif (38:44):
I was really weird.
Shannon (38:45):
Oh, like, I think he just told you that I was
m. Like, I don't get it. You just said
it was his favorite color.
St (38:53):
Yeah, and I wear it because he loathes it. And it's like, oh, maybe
he just told you he hates it to mess with you. So that.
Leif (38:59):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
St (39:00):
And. And, uh, later on, Chuck
does say, like, she doesn't know stuff about my dad.
Yeah, He. When he's. When he wants to get that. When he.
We. When we see the DNA
bag, he's like,
yeah, I. She doesn't know stuff about
him.
Leif (39:17):
I. I wonder if in the script or the director was
telling the actress act awkward
like, act like you're hiding something.
Shannon (39:25):
I don't know. I kind of think the actress just awkward.
St (39:29):
Yeah. I mean, she's such a soap opera actor
that I don't feel like I read much from her
other than just high drama.
Shannon (39:38):
Yeah. Also just the. Like, the storyline, it's
kind of terrible. Yeah, it's terrible. Like, there is no reason
to bring a question as to, like,
Chuck's. Like, Chuck's mom should just be dead.
It was a better, like, character arc
for him than this.
Leif (39:56):
Blair and Serena are getting ready and discussing Chuck when
Blair gets a call from Nate. Blair puts Nate
on speakerphone, so she continue applying her makeup. Nate
then proceeds to slut shame Serena, who snatches
the phone up and gives Nate a piece of her mind.
Shannon (40:11):
This is the scene where I realized even the
characters are bored with this episode.
When she picks the phone up and acts all indignant.
Leif (40:23):
It seems perfectly reasonable to me.
Shannon (40:25):
He's just like, uh, I didn't know I was on
speakerphone. Is like, obviously, I would
never call you a slut to your face.
Well, my.
St (40:38):
My other problem with this, though.
Serena is mad at Nate for
saying exactly what Serena said
to Jenny earlier in the
episode. Like, it's very special. You don't want
to do what I did. You don't want it to be
like I had.
Leif (40:56):
Well, he was implying that she didn't understand that.
St (40:59):
Yeah.
Leif (41:00):
Uh, but. And then also, I liked in the beginning where he's talking
to Blair, so it seemed like a peripheral. Reasonably to me.
That's what Blair says.
St (41:07):
Yeah.
Leif (41:07):
Because it's a Blair water nut job plan.
St (41:11):
Yeah. Speaking of things we've both shared,
I've really enjoyed
Nate and Blair during the
Nate Serena relationship. M. Their
banter. The. You know the one where it
was. The, uh, it's from. It's from
(41:31):
a book. You haven't read it? I forget what book it was. It's from Anna
Karenina. You haven't read it?
Leif (41:38):
Rufus finds Jenny following Serena's advice,
watching Dirty Dancing in her room. Jenny admits
it's corny, but, uh, good. Rufus
informs Jenny that he is bringing her to the gala tonight, but
he'll be watching her like a Lincoln hawk.
St (41:54):
I see what you did there. Because every time
she walks away or runs away, he takes. She
takes a piece of him with her.
Shannon (42:01):
Yeah.
Leif (42:06):
Indeed. Shame on you. Chuck
Bass reads the sign held by the protesters scream for
a boycott outside the Empire. Blair
finds Chuck gathering Elizabeth's DNA sample from
her cocktail glass. However, while Chuck is
explaining his doubts to Blair, Elizabeth walks in and
overhears them, Elizabeth storms off.
Chuck still plans to drop the sample off of the guy at
(42:29):
the nypd, but Blair seems to think
Chuck should believe Elizabeth over Jack.
Shannon (42:35):
Uh, Chuck absolutely should get a genetic test.
St (42:37):
Yeah.
Shannon (42:38):
You were told your whole life that your mother died during childbirth.
You. You. This woman just came into the picture.
You know nothing about her. You should
absolutely get a genetic test.
Leif (42:48):
Yeah. 100%. Yeah. I don't get Blair
advising against the earth.
Shannon (42:52):
Yeah. Stupid.
St (42:55):
Yeah. And. And even
Elizabeth to be upset about it.
Yeah, that's. That is sus.
Shannon (43:02):
Yeah, super sus.
St (43:03):
If you're gonna be. Oh, you know, don't
test my DNA. Oh, why are you.
Shannon (43:08):
Are you gonna show up out of the flu? You should be, like,
expecting that he's gonna want one.
Ready? Yeah. Should come with paperwork,
like.
St (43:17):
Like, here's a glass that I just
licked. And please take my DNA
sample so that you can know that it's
nothing out of line here. Yeah, absolutely.
Reasonable.
Leif (43:30):
And gossip girls lie as we go. To break is.
Um, Looks like the protesters outside aren't the only
ones who think Bass is an ass.
And we move into Act 4. We are at
the event of the week. Serena and Lily have a little run in, and
Serena doesn't have time for Lily's lies.
St (43:51):
Loved this. This is the first time they saw each
other since the hospital, right?
Leif (43:55):
Yeah, I think so.
St (43:57):
And I. I don't know if you remember. Serena was in the car
accident with Trip, the
congress person. Yeah.
Shannon (44:04):
Right, right, right, right.
St (44:05):
Yeah.
Leif (44:06):
Trip and Lily is really upset about her being with a married
man.
Shannon (44:10):
Sure.
Leif (44:10):
So, uh, she's not allowed home.
St (44:11):
M. And then they kind of had a little bit of
a makeup in the hospital,
but then they haven't.
Leif (44:19):
Yeah. She still is back living at Blair's.
St (44:22):
Yeah.
Leif (44:23):
Which brings another point. Nate and Serena were
having sex in Blair's bed.
Shannon (44:30):
Oh.
Leif (44:30):
It's also the same bed where Blair and Nate have had
sex. Chuck and Blair, Serena and
Carter, Serena and Carter. And also
Blair and Carter.
St (44:40):
Oh, geez.
Leif (44:41):
Blair slept with Carter for, like, two episodes
when they were Jen's turn.
Everyone sleeps in Blair's bed.
St (44:52):
Yeah. Dan and Vanessa need to head over, head off to the
Upper east side.
Leif (44:56):
Uh, how pissed off would Blair be?
St (44:57):
Oh, my God. She'd be. Yeah, that'd be
fantastic.
Leif (45:02):
Uh, Chuck enters the party, and
a crowd starts whispering. However, Lily
just smiles and gives Chuck a hug and asks about Blair and
Elizabeth.
Shannon (45:11):
The only good parent child relationship.
Leif (45:14):
Yes.
Shannon (45:14):
In the entire show.
St (45:16):
Only good. A good mom when it's not her kid.
Shannon (45:19):
Yep. And he's only a good son when it's Lily.
St (45:21):
Yeah. However, and, and Robin
pointed this out. Lily really
fought for this relationship.
Shannon (45:29):
Yeah.
St (45:29):
Like Lily really was patient
when Chuck was not ready to have
it off the rails. Yeah. And, and
blaming her with, with reason. I don't
think any 18 year old kid wouldn't have
the reaction he had toward his
stepmom dating someone else the day
(45:50):
after his dad died.
Shannon (45:52):
Yeah.
St (45:53):
So Lily then like really fighting for that
relationship. I, uh, felt
like it was really powerful for them to still be
so good together and for him to really have that
love for her.
Shannon (46:06):
Yeah. And I love like her attitude towards
the like possibility of meeting even M. Though, like I don't like
this character of like Chuck's mom. Uh, but
her being like, I was hoping to meet her. Yeah.
St (46:18):
Yeah. I'm, I'm excited to have this
part of your family into our family.
Exactly.
Leif (46:26):
Nate and Serena have it out in the stairwell. Nate
admits how hurt he was with the person that he lost his
virginity to. Serena abandoned, uh, him
immediately.
Shannon (46:35):
Yeah.
Leif (46:36):
I love that.
Shannon (46:36):
Like Serena starts the scene angry. She's like angry with mom. And then
she's like, now I'm angry with you, Nate. And then he just like turns
it around on her and she's like, oh, now I'm angry at
me.
Leif (46:45):
That makes, that makes sense. God
damn it, Nate. You made sense for the first time in your life.
Shannon (46:51):
Yeah. Twisted guy logic was the
most straightforward logic ever. Fuck.
St (46:57):
And I thought this was a good scene
for good Drama happens when
you have two people that aren't
necessarily right or wrong in how they feel in
the moment.
Shannon (47:10):
Yeah.
St (47:10):
And they both had legitimate feelings happening.
Nate did slut shame her. And
that's gotta hurt. And
he had reasons because he was hurt. But
he does love her and she does love
him. And so I just felt this was good
drama. And it was the kind of drama that I'm watching
(47:31):
thinking, this isn't going to break them up, this is going to bring
them together. Which for Serena is a
stretch because Serena is ready to
bounce.
Leif (47:41):
She's got to go.
St (47:42):
Yeah. She's just give me some
32 year old hunk walk by and
then I'm off. Off.
Leif (47:49):
Or at least someone who's read a book.
St (47:53):
You think Aaron's read a book?
Leif (47:55):
Uh, yeah. I mean he went to college art books.
Jack Bass is at the party and he makes a big show
of an apology to Lily. Rufus arrives just
in time to be self righteous and threaten violence.
Shannon (48:12):
This is the one moment was like, Jack, get The out
like don't talk to Lily.
Leif (48:16):
Yeah, yeah, totally messed up. But
I feel like Rufus was almost happy to see him just so he could be
self.
Shannon (48:23):
He's like, oh, somebody I can take out all my anger on
who deserves it and it makes me look good.
St (48:29):
What I like even more for one. For one
Rufus would. If Rufus ran up and just beat
the shit out of this guy sight unseen, I wouldn't
have been mad. I actually would have like
had a little more respect for Rufus if he would have
just been like, oh, Jack's here. Fists
up. But the frame be like
(48:50):
if you come anywhere near her again then uh, you're
gonna regret it. It's like Rufus,
as Jack shows us with the wink,
you are not intimidating
as much as I was like wow, Jack, that's really fucked up.
Like you said you like a good villain. And that
wink when Ruhnus threatens him, um, it
(49:11):
just, just all of the energy and power
that Rufus put into that threat was
just.
Leif (49:20):
Yeah. And he
deserved it.
St (49:24):
Completely. Completely. Yeah. Like fuck you, Rufus. Are you
uh, who are you fighting, Rufus? You gotta get your
guitar in hand. Bruised.
Shannon (49:31):
Despite like Rufus being like still kind of
pissy with Lily and passive aggressive towards her, I'm
glad he didn't use this opportunity to like throw her under
the bus. Or I was like, hey, loudy go off with Jack
or some like that. Like I'm glad he actually like still stuck,
stood up for her and was.
St (49:47):
Like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Shannon (49:49):
But no, he's not intimidated.
St (49:50):
He's not intimidating.
Leif (49:53):
Dan and Jenny have a brief conversation and Jenny
calls Dan out for buying into the double standard between boys and
girls. You tell him,
Jenny.
St (50:02):
Yeah, yeah. I
forgot to mention when Jack mentioned the lists of
drugs that he's, that he's on, he's like, like I
was drinking a lot.
Steve (50:11):
That was this.
St (50:12):
Some doctor prescribed this and some meth.
Leif (50:15):
Some over the counter, uh, medicine that's
recently got put behind the counter.
St (50:20):
Yeah, it ends
with and some meth. Yeah.
Leif (50:29):
Okay.
Shannon (50:32):
But yeah, Serena, uh, or rather Jenny makes the point.
Like when everyone, when you were 16 years old you
were in love with Serena and everyone thought it was adorable and it's
like, yep, yep, this is, this is true.
Like poor Jenny.
St (50:45):
And Dan's the one to say that to cuz he'll, he'll
internalize that somewhat. He's also doing
the dumb patriarchal thing of protecting his little
sister's virginity, which he has it.
It is the big reason that he and Nate aren't as close as
they could have Been now that they are again,
they're like friends again. But him
(51:05):
protecting Jenny's vagina is
why it would caused a huge rift between
him and Nate. And honestly, who on this
show would have treated Jenny
better than Nate?
Shannon (51:18):
Yeah, yeah, I know we talked about that last time
I was here and I like, you guys like convinced me. I was like, uh, oh,
now I kind of want Jenny and Nate.
Leif (51:26):
It looks weird on screen because the actors
ages and, and again, story wise,
I love them.
St (51:33):
Yeah, yeah. And also Chase, as
you mentioned a few seasons ago, had a big say in
that, that he didn't feel right because of the age
difference.
Shannon (51:43):
Speaking of, how old is Damien supposed to be?
Leif (51:47):
He's the same age as Serena. Uh, because she wants to school at Serena.
Shannon (51:50):
Oh, right, right, right. Okay, so that's, it's like 18.
Leif (51:53):
Uh, 19.
St (51:55):
Yeah.
Leif (51:55):
Okay, so he's the same, he's
the same age as Nate.
St (51:59):
Yeah, 19 by.
Leif (52:00):
So there's, there's two years difference.
Shannon (52:02):
Yeah, yeah. Okay.
St (52:03):
Yeah. And I even brought that up last week and then
was like, oh, yeah, that's like a, a
senior dating a freshman.
Shannon (52:11):
Really?
St (52:11):
Yeah, you know, it's a stretch kind of, but
it's, you know. Yeah, no senior.
Leif (52:16):
That's less than, yeah, senior dating a, a uh, sophomore.
St (52:19):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Which, yeah, I was
a senior dating a sophomore, so it's okay.
Leif (52:28):
Dan is quickly distracted by Vanessa who shows up
wearing a very tight dress. Vanessa just
smirks as Dan is drawn over to her.
Vanessa is still annoyed about the different zones thing
and teases a drooling Dan again.
Shannon (52:41):
Even the characters are bored by this Jenny plotline. Like
he's like, ah, you shouldn't fuck
Vanessa. Like, I
just love that. Like he can't be bothered. Yeah.
Uh, but yeah, it's not a friends only dress.
St (52:59):
Well, yeah, but V does not show up to play in this
either. Like she's definitely
letting Dan know. Like if you want friends only
zones and yeah, yeah.
M. Actually, I thought she looked good in that dress
too.
Shannon (53:14):
Like I, no, she definitely did. Yeah. Just like
I, I, I actually liked that Dan got
a distraction in the scene because I was so bored
with him talking to funny. So I
was like, thank God.
St (53:28):
Yeah, yeah. But, uh, yeah, I did think Vanessa
looked good. Uh, and although, and we've talked about
this before, they just don't know what to do with her hair half the
time. And I feel like that's such a
shame for her because, because she's
a very pretty person.
Shannon (53:45):
Yeah.
St (53:46):
And they constantly are just trying to like, do
Something with her hair. And nobody on
this all white cast knows how to handle
a woman of color's hair.
Yeah, yeah.
Leif (53:59):
Hair's not good, but the rest.
St (54:01):
Yeah, top notch.
Leif (54:03):
And yeah, thank God we're back to an Upper east side party, because we had
several episodes in a row with either no party or, like, an NYU
party, and there was a lot of bad fashion.
St (54:11):
Yeah.
Leif (54:12):
Mhm.
St (54:12):
Yeah.
Leif (54:13):
So all four of the women had nice, uh,
dresses.
St (54:17):
Yes, they did. Did.
Leif (54:19):
Nate approaches Jenny and apologizes for calling
Rufus. Jenny reveals the real reason why
Damen got aggressive with Serena. And Nate says Jenny can't
be involved.
St (54:28):
With someone dealing drugs.
Leif (54:30):
Jenny takes a shot at Nate's hypocrisy and
sees Damien enter the party. Nate tries to
stop Jenny from leaving with Damien, but Damien drops Nate
with a single punch. And that's when we get the
live from Gossip Girl.
Looks like little J. Is about to do some dirty dancing of her,
um, own.
Shannon (54:50):
This is the. This was the second. What? It was in
this scene when, like, Nate says
to Dan, he's like, oh, yeah, Jenny went off with
Damien and that guy deals drugs and what?
Yeah, I do. Like, Jenny's, uh, just like,
(55:11):
very, like, just so
monotone, like, go away, traitor.
St (55:18):
Well, and also,
Jenny, why are you telling Nate about the
drugs? Yeah, Nate has already
turned on you once.
Leif (55:29):
Yeah, I'm guessing she. She guys
assumed Nate would not care about drugs.
Shannon (55:34):
Yeah, I might be. I wrote big letters. Drugs.
Oh, no.
It escalated to punch really quickly, though. I don't
really get why he punched.
St (55:44):
Yeah, I. I actually had that thought
that he didn't need to. No, it could
just be like, okay, we're out. Okay, we're going.
Leif (55:53):
Well, Nate stepped in front of him and said, there's no way I'm leaving
with, uh, letting you leave with her.
Shannon (55:57):
Yeah. And then he just punched him. It was like two. Like, he's.
One sentence into that party, and he punched.
I was like, oh, my goodness.
Leif (56:06):
He knows Nate's style. He knows Nate was ready to fight.
Shannon (56:09):
Uh, yeah, he's probably, like, getting annoyed. It's like, okay, you already,
like, with my date with Serena at the last party.
Like, get out of here.
St (56:16):
Already over you now.
Leif (56:19):
So we go into Act 5, and Nate lets
Serena, Dan, and Vanessa know that Damien is a drug dealer
and Jenny left with him. Nate is going after
Jenny while the others are going to find Rufus and Lily.
Shannon (56:31):
Damien is worse than we thought. Uh,
like, what. What justification do
any of these characters have for hating Damien as much as they
do?
St (56:41):
Yeah. And we.
Leif (56:42):
Well, I Mean, from dating Serena's perspective, he did sexually
harass Serena.
Shannon (56:46):
Fair.
Steve (56:47):
That.
Shannon (56:47):
That. But that. They're saying that he's like, they're
basing this off of the drug deal.
Leif (56:52):
Yeah, but that. But now that.
Shannon (56:53):
Yeah, yeah. Are basing this off of the
drug deal, it's like, he's worse than we thought.
It's like. Oh, my God. It.
St (57:02):
And we also have Lily and Rufus making up
here.
Leif (57:06):
That's the next scene. That's the next scene.
St (57:07):
Oh, my bad, My bad.
Leif (57:08):
Yeah. So Rufus and Lily are having a quiet conversation.
Rufus admits that he went to Holland's apartment with the
intention to even the score, but couldn't go through
with it. They declare their love for each other and are about
to kiss when Serena, Dan and Vanessa show up
to tell them about Jenny.
St (57:25):
Great. Like, you're back together. Can we stop all the. The
fucking dumb drama? Can we make this show about the
fucking kids again? And like, as we know, by the end
of this, nope, Lily's gotta lie somewhere.
We've gotta keep lying about this same fucking thing. That.
That. I need to fly away for some reason. Fuck
you, Lily.
Leif (57:45):
Chuck's lawyer comes to inform him that the case has
taken a turn for the worse. Christian
conservative groups are threatening a boycott and the only
option for Chuck is to give up control of the empire
for PR reasons. Jack sneaks
up from behind the lawyer and volunteers himself for the job.
Chuck shuts it down, but Jack just smiles and
(58:05):
says he can wait till Chuck goes bankrupt and
buy the hotel for pennies on the
dollar.
Shannon (58:11):
I love Chuck's line in the scene where he, like,
talks about Christian conservatives and he's like, we have those in
Manhattan.
St (58:17):
Yeah, well. And
also Chuck makes the point of like, well, great.
Like that kind that can bring in the clientele
I'm looking for. Let them protest. And he's right.
It's dogma. You know,
this is exactly what you want.
Leif (58:35):
But as we find out later, the lawyer is in on it.
St (58:38):
Yeah, of course. Which, of course, also
super illegal. Totally get him
disbarred.
Leif (58:46):
Well, I guess he. You get a fat payout from Jack on this.
Or he's hoping to, obviously.
Nate shows up at the Smith Hotel and asks for Damian's
room at the front desk. We cut to Jenny and Damien making out
as they enter a hotel room. Then we cut back to
Nate being led into an empty room at the Smith
Hotel. And we go back to Jenny and Damien and it's
revealed they booked a separate room at the Empire.
(59:09):
Damian asks for Jenny's consent And she
agrees.
Shannon (59:12):
Now, see, Serena, that's how you do a scheme.
That was like. I enjoyed watching them walk into, like, the
bed main made a room. I was like, yeah,
got him.
Leif (59:26):
Um, yeah, I like how they shot that. They kept, like, cutting back and
forth.
St (59:29):
And once again, Damien isn't
an about this.
Shannon (59:33):
No.
St (59:34):
And if you think about it, pulling off
something like this, that's
exciting. That would be hot.
Shannon (59:41):
Yeah.
Leif (59:41):
Like.
St (59:42):
Like, Like, I don't feel like at this point,
Jenny is do it like had a scheduled.
Shannon (59:47):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
St (59:49):
That. Yeah. She, you know, she knew that this was going to happen tonight,
but now it's, like, exciting. And now I feel like she
has the buy in. She really wants to.
Leif (59:58):
Yeah, I think she wants to have sex with Damian.
She's not sure she's ready.
St (01:00:02):
Yeah. Yes. And I feel like in this moment,
she recognizes she's ready.
Leif (01:00:08):
And if Damian would have said the right thing,
it would have happened. Yeah.
Shannon (01:00:13):
Like, interrupt this scene, though, uh, with more.
Leif (01:00:18):
Yeah. Blair finds Chuck sulking at the bar and who
relays the info about the boycott and Jack's offer to take over.
Blair suggests first herself, and then Lily
has options, both of which Chuck declines. Chuck
gets a text and whispers DNA test
results. Looks like we got another choice.
Shannon (01:00:35):
So stupid. Who cares what the DNA test
results are? Like? You, like, it's like you
barely know this woman. Why the would you
sign your hotel? Why do you trust her?
St (01:00:46):
Yeah. Yeah.
Leif (01:00:48):
So silly. Not to you, Lily.
St (01:00:49):
Batman whispers through his butthole lips.
Shannon (01:00:52):
Yeah.
Leif (01:00:55):
We go back to Damien and Jenny. They are in the bed, and
Jenny stops the action for a moment to admit that she is a
virgin. Damien says it's not that big of a deal,
but Jenny disagrees and said it's a very big deal to her.
When Damian tries to push on, Jenny has second
thoughts and says she can't do this. An
annoyed Damien gets up, leaves, and tells
Jenny.
St (01:01:16):
I, uh, knew you were just a kid.
Leif (01:01:18):
Okay, dude, if you knew she was just a kid, why are you trying to
her then?
Shannon (01:01:21):
I hate this scene so much. I like,
it really made me give up on this episode. It's
just like, why can't Damian be an interesting
character where it's like, okay, he is kind of questionable. He does
deal drugs. He is, like, a little bit older. He did try to hook up with
Serena, but, like, maybe he does really like Jenny and maybe he
is, like, a good, like, partner for her. And, like, why can't we
(01:01:41):
have a complex character in situations? Like, nope, he
has to. It has to be so, like, Straightforward. He's a dick. He
just wanted to get her pants the whole time. Uh, all.
All of his. Like, him turning down Serena, saying, I really liked.
I really like Jenny. That was just. He just wanted to
her.
Leif (01:01:56):
Yeah, yeah, I had. Yeah. The same exact thoughts
is if he just cared about
sex, one, why turn down Serena? Two,
why not just lie in. In the moment?
Shannon (01:02:07):
Yeah, exactly.
Leif (01:02:08):
Or, you know, even just. Just, you know, wait a couple dates.
St (01:02:11):
And more than anything, like, had you just
finished the conversation you were having? You're like, can we talk
about this afterwards?
Shannon (01:02:18):
Yeah. After being like, you can talk to me about anything.
And like, what? Let's. Let's. And wanting to talk about it doesn't make
sense. Earlier that day I wanted to talk about it. And
so now all of a sudden you're like, I don't want to talk about it.
St (01:02:30):
When Jenny's like this. When he's like, it's not a big deal. And Jenny's
response is, well, it is a big deal to me. Oh,
I understand. That's not what I meant. But no,
he's like, can't we talk about this after I. After I throw it in you?
Can't we, like, can't we revisit this after?
You know, after I'm like, guys, I'm falling asleep.
Leif (01:02:49):
Just bad writing.
Shannon (01:02:50):
Yeah, really bad writing. I do like Jenny's line that I
chose you. I feel like she is, like, she
is more maturity than any character in this show at this
point, because it's like, it is her recognizing. Like. Like, I'm making a choice.
I have chosen you, and that matters
to me. Like, that is, uh, like, that's a lot for a 16
year old to recognize that.
St (01:03:10):
Yeah. And up until this moment, like you
said, Damien is a complex character
who is dealing with this really up
family situation with his dad on pills, and
now he's also dealing. So he's doing
bad, but, like, good people do
bad. Why did he have to stay a bad person?
Shannon (01:03:31):
Yeah. And he gets introduced as a complex character who was like,
very good in school. Like, that did better than Serena, was
like a really good grades and all this stuff. And so to have a
character who had so much promise and potential be,
like, also taking this kind of like, bad boy route.
It's like, he was really interesting.
St (01:03:48):
No, no. Was it his. His contract is up. Is
he. Do we not see him again for
ever? For a year?
Leif (01:03:56):
Um, he does come back. Um, yeah,
he's not. He's not done.
St (01:04:00):
Okay.
Shannon (01:04:01):
So you writers. Yeah.
St (01:04:03):
Yeah. You could have made him Better we.
Leif (01:04:06):
Go into the epilogue. Lily gets off the phone with
the NYPD and says they will continue to look for her,
but they probably won't find her. Tonight, Lily is at
the loft with Rufus, Serena, Dan and Vanessa.
Just then, Jenny returns home and announces her
breakup with Damian and the desire just to go to a
room to sleep.
St (01:04:24):
Parents, if you're listening,
your kids are gonna punish themselves
more than you ever can.
Jenny walks into this house
defeated.
Shannon (01:04:38):
That's my exact note. So defeated.
St (01:04:41):
Yeah, she's defeated. And
she has done this before. And every time
Jenny has acted out and done something
to piss off Rufus, whether she was right or
wrong in what she did, she has lost and come
back and beat herself up more than any
grounding, any punishment, any of that will
(01:05:01):
do. Like, Jenny's a good girl for the most
part. She does some weird up
sometimes, like getting involved with this drug dealer.
But again, like we said, people are complex.
You can be a good kid who gets involved the same, some
bad. And she's a good
kid. She's going to beat herself up
(01:05:22):
more than any punishment your
overbearing, stupid,
ridiculous father will give.
Shannon (01:05:29):
And why are you kicking your daughter when she's already down?
Like, I'm sorry for you, but that's what happens. And
like, he was about to say something like, so self
righteous and dickish and like, I'm, um, so
glad that she just cuts him off as like, like, can I go
to my room?
St (01:05:45):
Yeah.
Shannon (01:05:45):
Like, she's just so, like a poor Jenny. Like, she comes to
expect, like her life to be this. Because that's,
um, what her character is. It's just the world
on her.
St (01:05:55):
Yes. And. And. And her dad is the
anus that it comes out of, you know, like
he's the orifice of the world
because he's never handling her
with any kind of. Of good
parental.
Shannon (01:06:10):
Not even kindness. Like, there's not even
kindness.
St (01:06:14):
Yeah, no, it's an I told you so to your kid.
Shannon (01:06:18):
Unnecessary. She came home and like, and she just said
like, we broke up. Like, shouldn't you be a little
concerned for her feelings at all? Like, you'd, like, even
you should be celebrating for one for yourself. Yeah, like,
congrats, you won, Rufus. But now, like, actually
take care of your daughter. But no, it's like, she came back,
she broke up with the guy you didn't want her to be with, and you're still being
(01:06:39):
like, well, I told you so. Yeah,
such.
St (01:06:43):
Yeah, such.
Leif (01:06:44):
On a more positive note, I'm gonna give a compliment to both.
The combination between Taylor and the styling department because, like, for
most of this episode, she passes as. Like,
she could pass as young 20s. This scene,
she looks her age. She looks like a child.
St (01:06:58):
Yeah.
Shannon (01:06:58):
Yeah.
St (01:06:58):
Yeah.
Leif (01:07:00):
Uh, and.
St (01:07:00):
And even more so in the next scene. Yeah.
Leif (01:07:03):
Serena follows Jenny to her bedroom, and Jenny lies to her
about losing her virginity and blows it off as not a
big deal. However, as Serena leaves, we see a
sad face. Jenny listening to I've had the time of
my life from Dirty Dancing.
Shannon (01:07:17):
I'm so sad. Jenny has no one to talk to.
Like, and like, Serena could have been that for her, and
then instead she ski. Yeah. She.
Leif (01:07:25):
Vanessa's right in the other room.
Shannon (01:07:27):
Yeah.
Leif (01:07:27):
Nessa's right in the other room.
Shannon (01:07:28):
Yeah. Yeah.
St (01:07:29):
Why?
Leif (01:07:30):
Why? Is it Serena?
St (01:07:31):
Yeah. Yeah.
Shannon (01:07:32):
Truly. Yeah.
St (01:07:33):
And. And lying to Serena is just kind of
perfect.
Shannon (01:07:36):
Yeah.
St (01:07:37):
You know, like, you're going to come.
Yeah. You think you saved my virginity?
No, you. I'm going to make you think
I went through with.
Shannon (01:07:46):
Yeah. I kind of like that she. That she lies.
St (01:07:48):
Yeah.
Shannon (01:07:48):
Yeah. It's like, it's really business. And
you're not the person that I want to open up to about.
St (01:07:54):
Yeah.
Shannon (01:07:54):
So.
St (01:07:54):
Yeah. And I feel like had Jenny come in or Vanessa come
in five minutes later, she would have been like. Like.
Leif (01:08:01):
Like, let it all out.
St (01:08:03):
Tell her everything you know.
Leif (01:08:07):
Chuck goes to Elizabeth's hotel room, and as, uh, she is
packing to leave, Chuck admits that he should have trusted
her. He asked Elizabeth to take over the hotel for him.
She is reluctant at first.
Shannon (01:08:18):
So.
Leif (01:08:20):
So, so stupid.
St (01:08:22):
So dumb.
Leif (01:08:23):
This. This is why I should have trusted you, Bubby.
St (01:08:25):
I'm going to say this. That when she. When there was a
novel knock on her door before
she opened it and it was Chuck, there's the knock on the door, and I turn to
Robin, I go, that's Jack. And then it was
Chuck. I'm like, okay, he's got to sign it over to her first.
Leif (01:08:43):
This is why you don't give 19 year olds millions of dollars.
Lily gets a call from Cece who says she's passed
due for a test and Dr. Daddy is the best man for
the job.
Shannon (01:08:55):
Up.
Leif (01:08:56):
Lily lies to Rufus about her reason for flying out
to cc and Rufus tells her to go and says
he needs some time alone with Jenny.
St (01:09:04):
Clean slate. Clean slate. Starting when I
get back, right?
Shannon (01:09:08):
Yeah.
St (01:09:10):
Like when I land. It's a clean slate from then,
right?
Shannon (01:09:15):
Not.
St (01:09:15):
Not now.
Shannon (01:09:17):
Uh, just. Just remember that you agreed. Did this. This
was your introduction. Just remember that you agree that we remember
this conversation.
Leif (01:09:24):
So what. What are Your thoughts on this? Other than it's a bad storyline of
Lily lying. What. What is she lying about?
St (01:09:30):
Yeah, so that's.
Steve (01:09:33):
That.
St (01:09:33):
That is all of what I wrote down. Why the
lies? Why is.
Shannon (01:09:37):
Why not just say, like, my mother really wants to see
him. Yeah.
St (01:09:41):
Yeah. My ex husband is the best at
the. In the world at my mom's very
specific type of cancer, and she wants to
see him because she trusts him.
Leif (01:09:51):
Oh, so you didn't catch that, uh, what Lily's line or what her
line was? It's time for
your test, Lily.
St (01:10:00):
Huh?
Shannon (01:10:00):
Huh?
Leif (01:10:01):
It's time for your test, Lily. That's what
Cece said. Oh, you missed that, didn't
you?
St (01:10:07):
I did.
Shannon (01:10:08):
I did too.
St (01:10:09):
Is Lily sick?
Shannon (01:10:12):
I think they could have written that better, cuz I did. That
really went over my head. I thought it was just her, like, lying
about him again then.
Leif (01:10:21):
Yeah.
St (01:10:21):
Yeah, I. I missed that.
Shannon (01:10:23):
That's a good. That's a good writing plot. That's
way better than what I thought. Yeah, I wish I caught
that.
St (01:10:29):
Yeah.
Steve (01:10:30):
Because I.
St (01:10:31):
Because to me, it was just like
I'm sneaking behind my husband's back
to get medical treatment for my, uh, mom.
Like, why? Like I get. Your
husband is an immature prick, Rick.
Leif (01:10:46):
Or whatever. We got earlier that
Cece was well in like,
October. Yeah. And then. But she didn't get.
St (01:10:53):
Or she came home in October, but she was well in August.
Shannon (01:10:56):
Yeah, but like, cancer recurs and progresses and like, uh,
I don't know, she was.
Leif (01:11:00):
She was declared cancer free.
Shannon (01:11:04):
Cancer occurs. But why.
Leif (01:11:06):
But then it was like, why is Lily still
seeing him, um, three months later?
St (01:11:12):
And my thing was, I mean, I know that when
you are in remission, you still get testing
frequently, especially the first year. You get
several and then the following. So that's where my mind
went that, like, okay, we need follow up stuff.
Shannon (01:11:28):
Yeah. This to me, made sense.
St (01:11:29):
So it didn't. Yeah, it didn't hit any red flags
other than why wouldn't you
just be like, from the start, you
just had it all out and had this whole heart to heart with Rubus.
My mom really wants this guy to be the doc or
I want this guy to be my
doctor. Like, my mom tested for
this. Now I need to test to see if I have this thing
(01:11:52):
from what you pointed out. And
I want to go to the best in the world, and he
might have to, I don't know, see me naked.
He's a doctor and it's medical.
Why lie?
Leif (01:12:09):
Um, Dan shows up at Vanessa's dorm, and Dan and Miss. He
was confused and all mixed up because he had. They
had mutually decided to keep the relationship
secret. But that just isn't how
Dan likes to roll. The two make it past their
first fight as a couple and kiss.
Shannon (01:12:26):
I like the energy of this scene. I like the
kind of bit of, uh, like, I'm going to talk to Mike, my friend,
about the girl that I like. Yeah,
let's keep it.
St (01:12:36):
Yeah, it was cute. I'm
glad this is done. That
part of this.
Shannon (01:12:43):
I'm glad it took one episode and we're done.
St (01:12:45):
Yeah. That we're not high. If they would have
done an entire we are
sneaking around thing that would have been
more entertaining if it wasn't a, uh. We need boundaries, and we
need to know if it was a, uh, we're not telling anyone and we're going to
sneak around.
Shannon (01:12:59):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
St (01:13:00):
That's. That could have had legs. That could have lasted a
little while.
Shannon (01:13:04):
Yeah.
St (01:13:04):
But it was this stupid, like,
I like my friend too much.
Shannon (01:13:09):
Yeah.
St (01:13:09):
Like, I don't know.
I. Writers.
Leif (01:13:16):
Nate and Serena are alone, and Serena apologizes for
leaving after they slept together the first time.
They declare their love for each other and also kiss.
Shannon (01:13:26):
I'm glad Nate gets this apology from her. I
think that that probably was, like, something.
St (01:13:31):
Yeah.
Shannon (01:13:31):
Very healing. Uh, for. I was. I was like, oh, Like, I didn't
realize how hurt he was by that either. And
then, like, thinking about it the way he worded it, it's like, poor
boy.
St (01:13:41):
Well, and if you think about Nate in episode
one of Gossip Girl.
Shannon (01:13:45):
Yeah.
St (01:13:46):
When Serena shows up.
Leif (01:13:48):
Serena that.
St (01:13:50):
Well, that. That first shot, you know, when you see his
face and he's just like, uh.
Shannon (01:13:59):
And it's like. Honestly, it's. The one, like, bad thing he's ever
done is cheat girlfriend with
her best friend. Like, that was not a cool move. But it's like,
okay, like, if he, like, really, really loves
Serena and loved her and, like, had these strong,
strong feelings that it wasn't just kind of like a, uh, one off
for him. It just, like, she just bounced after.
(01:14:20):
It's like, oh, poor boy.
St (01:14:21):
He. He did. He was a little
shady during the political stuff with.
With, like, the gambling Serenas.
Leif (01:14:29):
Yeah. Nate. Nate does do some shady stuff on occasion.
He gets away with it just because he's so boring. No
one remembers it well.
St (01:14:36):
And he typically does it because he's just being
led into, like, he's just following
directions.
Shannon (01:14:42):
Yeah.
St (01:14:43):
He has no.
Shannon (01:14:43):
He has an obedient good dog.
St (01:14:45):
Yeah. Good boy.
Leif (01:14:47):
Who's a good point.
St (01:14:49):
Who uh, wants a milk bone. You go up in this guy's
political career and I'll give you a milk Bone.
Leif (01:14:54):
Yes. And sometimes your dog will rip the plant out of the planter
and there's dirt all over.
St (01:14:59):
There's dirt all everywhere. Every time, every now and then, your dog will shit on
the carpet. But.
Leif (01:15:06):
Chuck returns to his suite to find Blair waiting
with celebration champagne.
And Blair really sets herself up with this one
for the blame.
Shannon (01:15:16):
Because, yeah, yeah, she, she could have been
like. Cuz she goes, we're celebrating you for opening
your heart up to your mom. And then she looked at his and she
goes, and me encouraging you to do
it.
St (01:15:32):
And yeah. Once again, we
have Blair celebrating Chuck.
And I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Chuck has celebrated Blair to
Blair. Right. But I
keep waiting for him to have to
step up for Blair the way Blair has been stepping up
(01:15:52):
for him for the past 15 seasons.
Episodes.
Shannon (01:15:56):
Yep. If. If Serena
are dogs, Blair and Chuck, uh, uh, are cats.
St (01:16:05):
Love cats.
Shannon (01:16:07):
But yeah, I feel like it's. It's always going to be like Chuck is like
the wounded, you know. Yeah,
boy that, like, she needs to, you know.
Leif (01:16:21):
And the final scene, Elizabeth opens her
door to find Jack and Doug the lawyer with big
Cheshire grins on their faces. It appears
Chuck has been set up by
malpractice.
Shannon (01:16:34):
Yeah.
And like, where's the doctor that forged the DNA
test then? Like, because I still don't
believe it. And if I do believe it, it's like, it
sucks. It sucks no matter what this storyline.
St (01:16:48):
But if Elizabeth has a sister, which
her name was Evelyn at one point, now it's Elizabeth
come back. Or vice versa.
Shannon (01:16:56):
It wouldn't like either way. Like, she wouldn't test
positive as, like his. As his mother.
St (01:17:02):
Well, I'm. I don't know how. Like I,
uh. Just a police DNA test just to say if you're
related or not. Like, it may not be
as in depth as
a mayor. Like, like ancestry, like
as an ancestry test or something like that. It's just,
uh, is this a person, A match to be my relative? Could
(01:17:23):
this person be my mother? Because it's even not
an entirely exact science. So
like, could this person be my mom?
Leif (01:17:31):
But it would be just like Chuck to have a mother that would betray
him like this.
St (01:17:34):
It would be, it would, it would.
Shannon (01:17:35):
Be just like Chuck.
St (01:17:37):
It would be old Chuck
getting betrayed by moms again.
Shannon (01:17:42):
Old Chuck having to be like. Because
it's the only thing that makes him likable is having parents who betray. Betray
him.
St (01:17:48):
Right. Right. Well, and. And here's my other
thing about her not being the
actual mom, but being a sister or other relative
is the line that, that Bart
gave to Chuck when they first talked
about it, when he said, I can't look at
you and not see her. But, like,
(01:18:09):
you're paying her off every month.
Shannon (01:18:11):
Yeah, I, like, I don't want it to be real because, like, it really
doesn't. It ruins it retroactively. Ruins
a lot of, like, touching scenes from when. Like, from, uh,
that first season and, like, from the second when it's like,
yeah, yeah.
St (01:18:23):
Although it does make Bart that much more of an
ass. Like, you just lied. You'd be like, oh, no, no, I
don't hate you. I just see your mom when I hate you. I mean, look at
you.
Shannon (01:18:33):
And then, like, Dan's gonna have to take his story
back from.
Yeah,
Charlie Trout found his ball.
Leif (01:18:46):
Uh, and gospel girl ends the episode with.
And just like that, Chuck Bass is
celebrating a new love. Uh, careful, Chuck.
It's an open heart. It's vulnerable to the deepest
wounds. XOXO
Gossip Girl.
Shannon (01:19:06):
M. What?
Leif (01:19:08):
He's coming next.
St (01:19:09):
I. And. And I was waiting for that to happen at the end, and I
was. So. So. Because then
when Jack walked in. So
what's coming next? Well, Chuck's about to, uh,
lose his hotel. So there's going to be some kind
of scheme with Blair and
Chuck against Jack and Evelyn
(01:19:30):
to get this back. I. I don't see it happening
in an episode. I feel like this is setting up one of
those three episode arcs that
kind of tracks. So I think two more episodes of
Jack, maybe three, to
figure out what happens to this hotel and then does. Is
Chuck broke? You know, is Chuck gonna then be
(01:19:52):
relying on Blair's money
to survive? Or is he going to get the hotel
back or is he going to get another venture? So I'm. And
I'm curious as to that. Despite
the fact that I think that the entire storyline is stupid and I.
Shannon (01:20:07):
Hate it, so I actually, like, I don't remember what comes
next, so I'm not. I am actually, like, theorizing
here. So you think that, like, Chuck and Blair will unite over
this? Because this seems like the kind of thing historically that would
make Chuck turn on Blair.
St (01:20:20):
Like, I can see Chuck turning on Blair and
Blair trying to fix it.
Shannon (01:20:24):
Yeah, because that's what I see.
St (01:20:26):
I see Blair trying to scheme to.
Shannon (01:20:28):
Fix it and him just self destructing and, like,
being like, those girls that I didn't harass. I'm going
to now.
St (01:20:39):
Uh, we didn't even.
We. I don't think we addressed the. You know, I
was a kid then at my father's hotel.
Shannon (01:20:47):
Uh, last year.
St (01:20:48):
Chuck was, like, six months ago.
Leif (01:20:55):
Anything with Dan and Vanessa, Rufus?
St (01:20:57):
Oh, yeah. Dan and Vanessa, I think, have another couple
episodes in them, um, because everyone needs to see
it and put the idea in their head that they shouldn't be
dating because they're friends, and friends are going to ruin friendship.
I see that being the next step in
this. In that relationship.
I see Nate and Serena having
a little bit more time, maybe until someone
(01:21:19):
prettier pops up. Up. Uh, not. I don't
want to say prettier, but another pretty person gets in
between them at some point. Maybe someone from
the past or maybe someone new,
but I think that that's got a little bit of time left.
Lily and Rufus. Stop.
Just stop making a show.
Shannon (01:21:38):
He has to do something, like, horrible, like, he has to actually
betray her now, because if she is, like. If she
is sick, then, like, he has to do something bad
that he will feel bad about and regret when he finds out that
she's sick.
St (01:21:50):
Yeah, that and. Yeah. And, Lily, if you're
hiding being sick, that's really shitty.
Shannon (01:21:57):
Yeah.
Leif (01:21:58):
Any more final thoughts before we get into segments?
St (01:22:01):
I don't think so.
Leif (01:22:04):
Let's hop into the Wayback Machine that traveled to
the fan forums from 2010.
Hello there. Peabody here. And this is
the Wayback machine for traveling through time.
St (01:22:17):
And this is my boy, Sherman.
Leif (01:22:19):
Speak chairman.
Shannon (01:22:20):
Hello.
Leif (01:22:21):
Good boy. The overall
impression, they loved it.
Really?
Shannon (01:22:27):
Really. But fans love this
episode.
St (01:22:31):
This one, unfortunately.
Shannon (01:22:34):
Are you kidding? Why?
Leif (01:22:39):
Because they love Chuck and Blair.
Shannon (01:22:41):
Uh. Uh, okay.
St (01:22:45):
All right.
Leif (01:22:48):
We had the thing in season two where Canada was
getting episodes early, and they stopped it, but they apparently came back for
this episode for some reason. Um, they got early
episodes, so there was a couple pages of spoiler
tags. There was a lot of love
for Nate and Serena.
Shannon (01:23:07):
Exact same reaction.
Leif (01:23:10):
People wish Jenny would get some actual growth instead
of going through the same cycle of building her up to come crashing
down every season. Season.
St (01:23:17):
Yeah.
Shannon (01:23:17):
Uh, yeah. I don't think it's even that her character needs
growth. It's just, like, she needs, like, an opportunity to have a
life. Like.
St (01:23:25):
Yeah. The person.
Shannon (01:23:26):
Like, yeah. Give this character a story.
Yeah.
St (01:23:30):
That isn't about her crashing and burning, and it isn't about her
fighting with her dad over. She's typically right about.
Shannon (01:23:36):
Yeah.
Leif (01:23:37):
What are the writers setting up with Nate being the
main one to protect Jenny.
Shannon (01:23:42):
Yeah. I was wondering that, too, if, like, if there is going to be
trouble in. In his relationship with Serena now
that like Jenny and like it was kind of interesting.
Leif (01:23:50):
Uh, the after the punch that Nate goes after and not. Not
Dan. Dan just kind of like I'll hang out the party.
Shannon (01:23:55):
Dan just goes a what?
St (01:23:56):
There's also the line and it's kind of a throwaway from
Jenny where she goes. It's not like you're available.
Shannon (01:24:01):
That too. Yeah. It's not like you're available.
St (01:24:03):
Yeah, like, like you are the good
guy. You're the good guy today.
Shannon (01:24:07):
I want to be. You say that I deserve like the world.
St (01:24:10):
Yeah.
Leif (01:24:12):
So the Chucky Blair fans did like that. We got some the,
the. The lovey scenes. But they're also jealous. They didn't get the
sexy scenes like Nate and Serena and Dan and Vanessa.
St (01:24:21):
My one, my one note that I didn't say when,
when we got to the first time we see
Serena and Nate was. We get it. They
bang two episodes in a row. It's like they
have to let us know these two are banging.
Leif (01:24:34):
Uh, and you got the same thing with Dan
and Vanessa at the beginning.
St (01:24:38):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Leif (01:24:39):
And Jenny and Damian. And Damian
shirts open too.
St (01:24:43):
Yeah.
Leif (01:24:45):
But uh, Chuck and flair are fully closed when.
Shannon (01:24:47):
When Chuck opens his heart, he closes his
pants.
St (01:24:54):
I don't want to know what Count Chocula
vampire chest he has going on.
Leif (01:25:00):
And finally, as. As we mentioned, the ch. The final
Chuck and Blair scene definitely, uh, foreshadows
the outfall of Chuck and Blair there.
St (01:25:09):
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Leif (01:25:11):
And they love, love to hate Jack and now
Elizabeth as well.
St (01:25:15):
Yep.
Leif (01:25:17):
The Lily Chuck scene was adorable.
St (01:25:19):
Yes.
Leif (01:25:20):
Kind of messed up that Nate and Serena are having sex on Blair's
bed.
St (01:25:23):
Yeah.
Leif (01:25:24):
As we mentioned, it's really messed up. As we mentioned
that that bed is also experienced Serena and Carter, Blair and
Carter, Chuck and Blair and Nate and Blair.
St (01:25:33):
But I don't know. She changes the sheets. I'm sure before Blair
comes home. The sheets get
changed before comes
home.
Leif (01:25:42):
Well, the Blair doesn't live there anymore.
St (01:25:43):
Exactly. Yeah. So it's cool.
Leif (01:25:45):
Like she's just the metaphorical nature.
St (01:25:47):
Oh yeah. It's.
Leif (01:25:49):
Dan and Vesta should have gone to find Jenny instead of
Serena at the end.
Shannon (01:25:54):
Mhm.
St (01:25:54):
Yeah.
Leif (01:25:56):
And confusion on how much in
universe time passed during the long hiatus.
Shannon (01:26:02):
Mhm.
St (01:26:03):
Yes. Because it, because it
seems a few episodes back when we
first came back from it, it seemed like it was.
Leif (01:26:11):
Just a holiday break.
St (01:26:12):
Just a holiday break. Despite being three months.
I wonder if it was.
You know, they shot that holiday that first
One earlier, and then they were put on break
until the spring and then started shooting again.
Maybe it is. It is weird.
Leif (01:26:30):
That is it for this week in fandom. Let's move over to
episode grade grades.
I went first last time, says Steve. You get to go first.
St (01:26:42):
This week I went with a C
minus. I. I started at a
B and kind of worked backwards from there. Sometimes it happens when we
do the podcast that I'll start off with a, uh, grade, and then we'll.
I'll be talking about the episode and I'm like, no, this
is really bad. And it came down to a
C minus. And I think that's a little generous.
(01:27:02):
I hated the. The virginity plot line.
I hated the
Dan and Vanessa plot line. I hated the.
I hated it. Like, I didn't. I don't want to say hated it, but I. It
was not top tier Gossip Girl.
Leif (01:27:17):
How about you, Shannon?
Shannon (01:27:18):
I. I gave it a D for dog.
I thought it was boring and pointless.
I like the main plot line about Jenny's virginity.
Doesn't matter to me, uh, at all. Like, the
way that much it's handled is, like,
bad. It's just not fair for this character. Like,
I just want this character to have, like, something. Yeah.
(01:27:40):
Like, happen to. For her to move her story
forward, but instead, like, yeah, she does keep cycling
around just, like, the world shitting on her. And the
B plot was better than the A plot, but only
slightly. Uh, the most interesting thing about
this episode is the cliffhanger and that the rest
of the episode is just like, like, like even the
characters were bored.
Leif (01:28:01):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
For me, Mo, the Chuck and
his mom storyline is horrible.
It's the soap. Daytime soap worthy.
I mean, I, I don't like the whole virginity point of
the Jenny storyline, but I did like the
Jenny and Damian storyline overall,
(01:28:22):
up until that last scene.
Shannon (01:28:23):
Yeah, I think that last scene just kind of like rewrote it
for me where it's like, okay, well, well, yeah.
St (01:28:29):
Uh, but, yeah, that could have changed the. The
trajectory.
Shannon (01:28:32):
I agree.
Leif (01:28:33):
Yeah.
Shannon (01:28:33):
Yeah.
St (01:28:33):
Just a little bit. Yeah.
Leif (01:28:35):
Because if that would have ended up well, then that would
have actually been a good storyline. But because that was even, like, it
had that. That was the only one that really had potential to be a good
storyline and it still failed. So this episode
gets a demi.
Shannon (01:28:47):
I heard if, like, she lost her virginity. It was
like, he was sweet to her and, like, she was happy about
it. And then Serena comes in and she lies about that and she
says, no, we. I didn't do it. Like, I Would have been more.
Leif (01:28:58):
Oh yeah, way back.
St (01:28:59):
Better.
Shannon (01:28:59):
Yeah. Writers.
Leif (01:29:01):
But yeah, I, I give it a D minus.
Shannon (01:29:03):
D minus. Yeah.
St (01:29:05):
Yeah. That's your lowest, I think so far.
Leif (01:29:07):
I believe it might be
moving over to stockwash. Steve, who do you got going up?
St (01:29:15):
I have Jack and Elizabeth going
up.
Shannon (01:29:18):
Mhm.
St (01:29:19):
I have Vanessa going up
for her relationship with Dan. And I
have Nate going up. Up for,
uh, you know, looking out for Jenny in a
better way than other people did and for getting
Serena in the end. And that is all I have until
I hear what you guys have and might add something to it.
Leif (01:29:39):
Shannon, who you got?
Shannon (01:29:41):
Yeah, I had Jack and Elizabeth going up.
They're. They're scheming a lot of moving
parts. Uh, it seems to have worked in their
favor. I had Dan and Vanessa going up.
Um, they seem like they're
like hitting a stride that they're both
comfortable and happy with. And
I don't know, I guess like I initially had
(01:30:04):
Rufus and Lily going up because they had kind of
resolved things, but now I'm not sure about that
one. Yeah, I, I would keep them flat.
Leif (01:30:13):
Okay.
Shannon (01:30:15):
Yeah.
Leif (01:30:15):
For me, I had Jack. Elizabeth obviously
also gave Chuck's lawyer a little nod because he's in on the scheme.
St (01:30:21):
I thought about it, but I feel like
there's that part of me that's like this dude is committing
fraud. Right,
Right. But like he's like the lawyer.
Shannon (01:30:32):
He's the most deluious.
St (01:30:34):
Yeah. Most to lose.
Leif (01:30:37):
Um, I also had Serena going up because I.
She was trying to do the right thing even though it was the
ass battery awkward way to do it. Then Dan and
Vanessa going up. I did not have Nate going up. I had
him as neutral because he got punched.
Shannon (01:30:53):
I was like. For him and Serena, I kind of went back and forth
with it a little bit because it's like, okay, Nate got like his
apology and like uh, there.
Leif (01:31:00):
And Serena got her apology too.
Shannon (01:31:02):
Yeah, it's like things are going okay with them. I just. I
like ultimately left it on.
Leif (01:31:06):
Yeah, I would have had them both up, but I just
had to knock. Made the neutral cuz he got punch.
Shannon (01:31:11):
Yeah, he did get punched.
Leif (01:31:13):
Steve, who do you got going down?
St (01:31:15):
So I actually. Well, I'll start with Chuck and Blair
both going down for getting played.
I have Dan going down because he's with
Vanessa.
Shannon (01:31:25):
No.
St (01:31:27):
I did that last week too, that
Vanessa goes up. She landed Dan. And Dan
goes down because he landed Vanessa. I uh, have
Jenny going down because she's clearly once
again hitting bot him. I actually had Serena
going down Because I hated
her scheming in this episode. I thought that her
(01:31:48):
scheming was ridiculous and dumb and
led to the fight that she and Nate
got into. So I had Serena going down. I have
Rufus and Lily both going down as well,
because Rufus, for being such
an. To his kid this entire time, and
Rufus is. You're getting played.
(01:32:08):
You're getting lied to. And Lily, you're going down
because you're a liar.
And Damien. That's it.
Leif (01:32:17):
Shannon.
Shannon (01:32:18):
I had Chuck and Blair going down, obviously, for
obvious reasons. And then I had Damien going
down just because that, like, what a character
flip. Just total 180 on,
like, so much potential. So much
like, he'd, like, he could have had, like, a good relationship and
been in this, like, I don't know. There's a lot of potential there.
(01:32:38):
And now it's just, like, we might as well be off the
show. We're done with you. And that was
actually it. I didn't. I didn't have, like, anyone else going down. Just those
three for me.
Leif (01:32:48):
I had Damien because, yeah, he. The flip at the end just
killed his character. Jenny, because she's
all alone again.
Shannon (01:32:56):
No, she seems so, like, disinterested in
it now, though. Like, she's so unaffected by
her situation. Just like, she know she's nerdy
dancing, like, I guess I'll listen to this on my ipod.
Leif (01:33:08):
I, uh, had Chuck and Blair because, yeah, they were
played. And Rufus and L. Because they're
ridiculous and need to grow up.
St (01:33:17):
But here's the best outfits from the last
episode we seen.
Leif (01:33:25):
Moving to best outfit. Steve, who do you got?
St (01:33:28):
I gave it to Vanessa at the dinner.
I. When she came in in that to. To be
all sexy to Dan, I was like, I'll give it to you, V.
I thought that was a, uh. I thought she looked great, so.
And that giant necklace that she had. It's funny because Robin's like,
oh, that outfit. And I'm like, no, I love it.
That's my favorite. Yes.
Leif (01:33:47):
This. The strapless Lily dress from Diane
von Furstenberg.
St (01:33:53):
That one.
Leif (01:33:55):
Shannon, who you got?
Shannon (01:33:56):
I. I had a hard time choosing. I didn't actually like
a lot of the outfits in this episode. Uh, and I feel like they
didn't show them off either. Like, there weren't, like, a lot of.
St (01:34:05):
Shots that, like, this season has not
been as.
Shannon (01:34:08):
Ah, yeah. Fashionable.
Um, but I guess, like, I. I wound up landing on
Jenny's outfit at the end. The, like, black. Black
kind of, like, high neck that.
Leif (01:34:19):
Was from the Salvatore Ferregmo Fall
2009 collection.
St (01:34:23):
I almost put that one down. Yeah, that was my second.
Shannon (01:34:25):
It was very like straightforward. Wasn't like
flashy. But I. I think like in comparison to all
the other outfits of the episode, I think she looked best.
St (01:34:33):
And it had that like mesh.
Shannon (01:34:35):
Yeah, yeah. Ah.
St (01:34:36):
I thought was cool.
Leif (01:34:38):
Like that actually wasn't part. That was actually not even part of the dress.
The actual dress.
Shannon (01:34:42):
Oh.
Leif (01:34:42):
Really deep be.
Shannon (01:34:43):
Oh. I kind like. I kind of like the high neck, like
covered part. Yeah.
Leif (01:34:48):
Like a shirt on top of it.
Shannon (01:34:49):
I think that's um, what made me like it, like. Yeah.
St (01:34:52):
Because, uh, because it had like a fishnet kind of
feel to it, which just really tied it back to
Jenny.
Shannon (01:34:58):
Yeah.
Leif (01:35:00):
So also shout out to Serena's gray lace
jersey dress from Stella McCartney. But I ended up
landing on Blair's red flower print dress by Dior.
Her m. We've already kind of established that
Serena's color is gold yellow.
Uh, Jenny is definitely a black.
This kind of, I think is the first time we've really got
(01:35:21):
a prominent red dress from Blair and that is
definitely her color. My favorite
outfit of the whole show is her episode from season four,
episode two with the red Valentina dress.
Shannon (01:35:33):
Yeah, red is her color. I agree with that. That I actually
liked too Serena's like outfit with the kind
of dark purple jumper when she was
doing the like scheming. I thought that color looked good on
her as well. That like kind of like pinkish purple.
St (01:35:48):
Yeah.
Leif (01:35:50):
And Blair was also wearing. I'm not sure if it was Chuck's robe or
her robe with like a Japanese robe at the beginning.
Yeah, they didn't show the back, but I saw it
online and there's like a big dragon emblem on it.
Shannon (01:36:01):
Really? I love Blair in a row
robe.
Leif (01:36:07):
That is it for our segments.
Shannon, thank you once again for joining us. Do you
have anything you would like to plug this time?
Shannon (01:36:16):
No. Still no.
Leif (01:36:19):
I can. All right.
Steve, you plugged anything?
St (01:36:24):

I'm going to be doing a film with some friends and

called Best of this so I'll be
