(00:00):
So you like to listen to peopletalk about crime, But did you ever
wonder why criminals do the things theydo, like what makes them tick?
My name is Debbie and I'm theprofessor at True Crime University. Join me
in the classroom Thursdays wherever you getyour podcasts for intellectual discussions about crime,
(00:21):
psychology, and why criminals do whatthey do. See you there. Down
this road is a small city, once thriving, full of life, but
(00:41):
now desolate and abandoned. Well, abandoned save for the horrors rumored to reside
within, which I presume is whyyou're here now. There's nothing wrong with
a little morbid curiosity, but pleaseremember to stay close to your guides.
You wouldn't want anyone to get leftbehind. Now. Hello, everyone,
(01:08):
Welcome back to Nopeville, wonderful cityfilled with all the horrible, terrible things
that make you say nope, nope. We are your tour guides. I'm
Christine, I'm Jen. We knowit's been a while. We're so sorry
we missed out on our favorite monthof the year. We're clawing our way
through all the cobwebs that have takenover Noteville. Yes, luckily everything is
(01:30):
still contained as far as we cansee, Yes, but but it's dirty.
And also as a result, withreal life being what it is,
we're going to be taking a verybrief break again. We're very sorry,
but we will be returning. Thegoal is beginning of March, so keep
your eyes and ears peeled for ourreturn everywhere. Look at our social medias,
(01:52):
yep, go to our social media'sNote Fille cast on Twitter, Noteviille
podcast on Facebook, and Instagram. We will be there. Sort of those
have kind of died a little too, but that's okay. Well' Twitter's just
a closer fuck right now anyway.Yeah, we all know what's going on
over there, so we're just adumpster fire or just kind of. Even
(02:13):
the inhabitants of No Bill don't wantreally much to do with that. We
do still exist over there, butyou know, but you can always reach
out to us on our email orour contact us warm if you have any
questions or you have any stories youwant to share with us that we can
do on our camp fire upon ourreturn, or any paranormal investigators that want
to reach out and collab with usat some point as well. We'd be
(02:34):
more than happy to have you onour Haunting Hour. We've been doing some
paranormal investigating ourselves, which brings usto what today's tour is. This location
is near and dear to Jen's heartand I have grown fond of it as
well recently. It is the WhalleyHouse in old Town San Diego. Yay.
We've been meaning to do this, but we knew that it was an
option to investigate it, so wewanted to do that before we brought you
(02:58):
everybody else's hauntings. Yes, andI've done it three times. I've done
it twice, and we plan todo it privately at some point. Yes.
So we just did their public tourand it's public in that the cap
it at like ten people per investigationand it's not too bad. Yep.
And if you're lucky, you'll getsome nice, courteous groups like we did.
(03:21):
And the guide is amazing. Hisname is Sam. Shout out to
Sam. Highly recommend doing that. And I think Sam does all the paranormal
investigations right as far as we're aware, he's the only one who does any
of the night time stuff that happensat the Whayey House. So tell him,
we said, Hi, Yeah, tell him we sent you. He's
well aware of us now, Yes, I bothered him enough times. All
(03:42):
right, So today we will bestarting off with our dear historian Jen.
I guess that's what I am now, kind of I'll take it. I
earned my boy Scout badge. Historyhaunted. History reminds me of the little
kid from up. I have thisbash, this patge, this page right.
(04:03):
The Whaley House. So, theWhale House, as tour guide Christine
said, is located in San Diego, California, in an area called Oldtown,
actually just a couple blocks away fromthe Cosmopolitan Hotel that we've had a
previous tour and a paranormal investigation ofConstruction on the Whale House began on May
six, eighteen fifty six, aluxurious two story Greek Revival style home designed
(04:26):
by Thomas Whaley. When he beganconstruction on his home, he declared,
quote, my new house, whencompleted, will be the handsomest, most
comfortable, and convenient place in townor within one hundred and fifty miles of
here. Interesting, very specific, very bold, but you know what he
did it. He's not wrong. It is a lovely home. When it
was completed, it was furnished withmahogany and rosewood furniture, Brussels, carpets,
(04:49):
damask curtains, and made with bricksliterally created by Thomas Whaley's personal brickyard,
because when you don't have one,you make it yourself. Of course,
that's how they did it back inthe day, and that's exactly what
he did. So what he didis he bought two brickmaking machines from New
York for twenty five dollars and utilizethe clay deposits and sand from part of
(05:10):
the eight and a half acres heowned in Old Town, and utilize seashells
from the beaches of San Diego touse as plaster for the walls. Apparently
seashells had to be used for plasterto reinforce the bricks since San Diego doesn't
have lime deposits. Really, Yeah, so they literally use seashells plaster,
right, Isn't that cool? Ididn't even know there was a thing you
(05:30):
could do. Yeah. But thenhe also used the ground around the Whaley
House to make the bricks that builtthe Whalley House, which again is another
fascinating thing to me. See,that's one of those things that like in
the very very back of my mind. I know that's the thing that people
do and can do, is justlike take elements of the ground and make
it into stuff to actually make ahome. But like, yeah, it's
not something that you immediately think ofever. Yeah, you never think of
(05:55):
how the sausage is made, right, It's just there and you're just eating.
Okay, cool, Yeah, sometimesyou don't want to know. Cheer
As it stands. A whale housestill has the original woodwork you can admire
as you saunter through its historic halls. It was all cut elsewhere and to
be shipped to this location in metalboxes to keep it safe from rats on
the ship. Back then, parishableswere packed in barrels of flour, grain
(06:16):
or anything else that could provide acushion to protect the pieces. Therefore,
you can imagine it wasn't that cheapto get this stuff over here. Right.
Once it was completed in eighteen fiftyseven, the construction costs totaled to
over ten thousand dollars, which todaywould be just over three hundred forty thousand
dollars. But compared to current homeprices in San Diego, that's still not
(06:36):
that bad to be honest, that'slike my parents paid for a home.
Yeah, that's like a third ofthe median home in San Diego right now.
But anyway, I digress in fishing. It was said to be the
finest home of its kind in southernCalifornia, and it was the first brick
building to be erected in San DiegoCounty. So he wasn't wrong. It
(06:57):
was the handsomest home. He wasnot roy It was the handsomest within one
hundred and fifty months we throw outthere. The roughly thirty six hundred square
foot two story home was considered amansion for its time. That's interesting.
Having been in the house, thatis very interesting. It's like a three
bedroom home. That's crazy, andit's a mansion, yeah, compared to
like the Winchester House. Look what'sgoing on over there. Thomas Whaley was
(07:20):
a great businessman. He found opportunitywherever he could, and it showed in
the fact that while the Whales livedin the home, parts of it were
rented out and served as a granary, a general store. Rooms were rented
out for a long term and shortterm stays. It was also the second
County Courthouse, San Diego's first commercialtheater, a ballroom, a schoolhouse,
a billiard room, a polling place, and a storage for official court documents
(07:43):
and records for the San Diego Countygovernment. So he's just like, I
built this thing, use it asyou may do whatever you want with it.
It's space, and while you're doingit, I will live right there
exactly, just gonna pay me fordoing what you want to do. But
first, who is Thomas Whaley andwhy was he important enough that his family
home was turned into a museum thatwe can still visit over a century after
(08:03):
his death? Who? Indeed?Thomas Walley was born October fifth, eighteen
twenty three, in Manhattan, tofather Thomas Alexander Whaley Senior and mother Rachel
Pie. He came from a Scot'sIrish family that immigrated to Plymouth, Massachusetts,
in seventeen twenty two. His greatgrandfather, Alexander Walley, participated in
the Boston Tea Party in seventeen seventythree. He was also a gunsmith and
(08:24):
provided flint lock muskets for soldiers duringthe Revolutionary War, and allowed General George
Washington use of his house when hewas in Long Island. Oh wow,
Yeah, Thomas Whaley Senior continued thefamily business as a gunsmith and also served
in the New York Militia during theWar of eighteen twelve. His wife,
Rachel's family owned a lock manufacturing business, and the Pie and Whaley firm was
(08:46):
established after they married. When ThomasWhaley Senior passed, his older sons John
and Henry took over the family businessalong with their mother Rachel. For Thomas,
who was only seven years old atthe time, it was his father's
wish that his son received a formaleducation. Thomas Waley went on to get
that education at the Washington Institute, where he acquired part of his business acumen.
After he graduated, he toured Europesolo for a little while, and
(09:09):
upon his return he wanted to liveon his own. He found a room
for rent at Madame Victoria Delauney, where Thomas met her younger daughter, Anna
Eloise Delauney. Anna was a studentat Missus Green School for Young Ladies and
was an accomplished musician who played thepiano, guitar and melodeon. I Love
at first sight. At the time, Anna couldn't speak a word of English,
(09:30):
as she only spoke French. Thomaswas infatuated with Anna, and he
began courting her. Anna's first lettershe ever wrote in English was to Thomas
at the ripe old age of eight. So gross. So Thomas Walley is
about nine years older than Anna,so he was like seventeen at the time
(09:50):
he started according her, and shewas eight years old. So yeah,
there's that. So like an agegap of nine years, it doesn't sound
bad in a certa, it doesn'tsound bad. But when you're eight verses
seventeen, right exactly. So whenpeople say age is just a number or
like, you know, age gapsaren't really a big deal, it's typically
applied when you hit the age oftwenty, so it's really Yeah, the
(10:15):
eighteen hundreds were a different time,so that's true for sure, for sure.
Enchanted by the thought of success andriches of the California gold Rush,
Whaley headed to San Francisco in eighteenforty nine, where he opened up his
own general store. While still technicallycourting Anna. He didn't want to marry
her until he was able to befinancially successful and capable to care for her.
So he's just like, I'll beback for you in a few years.
(10:37):
Let me make some money first, and then we're going to do this
thing. So yeah, by thenmaybe she'll be old enough. It's romantic,
it is. He set up amercantile store with his business partner,
George Wardle, selling locks and hardwarefrom the family business Pie and Whalley in
New York at the age of twentysix. He was so successful he was
able to have his own store onMontgomery Street, have his own two story
residents, and operate a boarding house. However, this newfound success didn't last
(11:01):
long. In May, at eighteenfifty one, a fire was started in
an upholstery shop on Montgomery Street, nearly destroying the entire business district. Wally's
businesses unfortunately, fell a victim tothe fire, and Wally lost everything.
Instead of choosing to rebuild in SanFrancisco and not wanting to return to New
York and feel like a failure,Willie decided to explore the rest of California
and head down south to Oldtown SanDiego. In eighteen fifty three, he
(11:26):
finally earned enough money to return toNew York and marry Anna Delauney, which
they did on August fourteenth, eighteenfifty thirty. Nice. He partnered with
a few others in the general storebusiness, one of which being his own
brother, Henry Hurst Whaley, andthey called their general store Whaley and Waleie.
Henry and Thomas didn't get along well, and Thomas eventually found out that
Henry was swindling customers by overcharging forproducts so he could pocket the surcharge,
(11:48):
and Thomas didn't like that, sohe dissolved the partnership. That's good,
at least he was an honest man. Yep. In eighteen fifty five,
really purchased eight and a half acresof land well. This land was once
home to the town's gallows god.During Willie simon San Diego between eighteen fifty
one and eighteen fifty two, hewitnessed three hangings. One very notorious.
One was James Robinson aka Yankee Jim, who was sent to his death for
(12:09):
the attempted robbery of a pilot boat. And two other men who took part
in a plot by local Native Americansto take back their land, named William
Marshall and Juan for Dugo. Yes, Thomas Whaley came to San Diego witnessed
the hanging of these three men andsaid Yes, this is where I'll settle
with my future wife and children, and I'll do so right on this very
plot of land. This is whereI want to make a home. He
(12:30):
was a businessman, after all,A deal is a deal, one,
you know. Zach Begans would doit. Yes, do it, but
for different reasons. Not because hegot a good deal, but because people
died there. He would pay sevenmillion dollars. Yes, to build there,
he would. Yes, the plotof land had its desirable aspects,
and that it was a corner alot with its own natural well. But
many others weren't too keen on snatchingit up for its vile history. Thomas
(12:54):
was just like wells news, you'lllose more land for me. Watch what
I'll do with it, right exactly, and he showed people so. Back
to the Native Americans in eighteen fiftyone, and uprising among the local Native
Americans occurred, led by a mannamed Antonio Gotta. Antonio Gatta was a
well educated and multi lingual man.He was educated at the Mission San Louis
Ree and was chief of the Kopanostribe. The uprising had been brewing for
(13:18):
some time as the Americans were heavilytaxing the Native Americans but not producing anything
that would help them out. Theydo, Yeah, so they were taxing
them on land that was not theirs, right, But anyway, the Native
Americans were essentially being charged to occupytheir own land, right. That's so
disgusting. MTE. Other tribes innorthern California were said to be getting aid
(13:39):
with their tax dollars. However, his tribe and other Southern California tribes weren't
seeing any such benefit. Antonio Agatagathered the other tribes to rise up against
the white settlers before more came tothe land and imposed their taxes and governess
on them. According to an LATimes article, he devised a three pronged
attack where the combined tribes would atackSanta Barbara, Los Angeles, and San
(14:01):
Diego. They would also attack CampIndependence along the Colorado River, since this
area is where a lot of theAmericans would be able to cross the river
easily and come to their land right. He and other Native Americans entered the
camp under the guys that they wantedto trade horses with the Americans. There
were only about a handful of Americansin the camp, and there were hundreds
of Native Americans surrounding the camp,so they could have easily overtaken them.
(14:24):
However, one camp commander was suspiciousof the transaction and he refused entry to
the Native Americans. When they refusedto leave, he ordered his men to
aim the camps one pound howitzer,a long range weapons similar to a cannon,
at the Native Americans. Knowing theirbows and arrows were no match for
the heavy artillery, Gotta ordered hispeople to retreat. Gotta returned home feeling
(14:46):
defeated, when he heard that someNative Americans were going to attack Warner's ranch.
He was unable to participate since hefell ill. John Warner shot and
killed two Native Americans in the attackand was able to get himself and his
wife to safety. Gotta's son tookpart in the rage, killing Americans at
a nearby hot springs. Gotta wroteto Juan Antonio, the chief of the
quayas to help with the war efforts. Chief Antonio wrote back, requesting a
(15:07):
face to face meeting. When Goddashowed up to the meeting, Juan Antonio
had set up a trap. JuanAntonio was jealous of the esteem that his
people held Forgotta and decided to doublecross him and turn him in. Juan
Antonio turned Gotta into General Joshua Bean. Maybe that's why your people hold more
esteem Forgotta, because he's because he'srespect fighting for your people, not the
(15:28):
Americans. Yep, okay. ChiefAntonio Gotta and his son were taken into
cussody and taken back to oldtown SanDiego, where they were tried and found
guilty of treason, murder, androbbery. To quote the La Times article
quote, Goda's defense attorney argued thathis client couldn't have committed treason since he
never swore allegiance to the United States, and he couldn't be guilty of murder
(15:50):
since as chief he had the powerto make war. That's fair. So
he was guilty according to American laws. But he was not American, right,
Yeah, so he was on hisown land that the Americans stood from
him. He allows me nothing here, yep. So regardless, the Americans
found god A guilty of all charges, then convicted him to death on the
afternoon of January nineteenth, eighteen fiftytwo. He was marched with his hands
(16:12):
bound to a freshly dug grave atthe local San Diego Catholic cemetery called the
al Campo Cemetery, just about ablock away from the present day Whale House.
He was knelt before this grave andhis captors urged him to say his
final words. Gotta said, quote, gentlemen, I asked your pardon for
all of my offenses and accept yoursin return. End quote. Seconds later,
(16:33):
the firing squad of twelve men,one of which was Thomas Whaley himself,
fired upon Antonio Gotta and he fellinto the grave. The reason why
we know Thomas Whaley was part ofthe twelve men in this firing squad was
because there was a letter found thathe wrote to his mother's in January.
He says, quote, the painfulduty to fall to me of the twelve
to carry out the execution. Sohe was an eye witness to all of
(16:57):
it. So he was regretful tobe part of it, but he felt
like it was his duty as partof the community of Oldtown. So it's
like that social pressure, yeah, pretty much, yea. As for his
man accomplices, William Marshall and JuanVerdugo, they were hanged at the gallows
on December thirteenth, eighteen fifty one, less than a month prior to Gara's
execution, of which Thomas Willey wasalso a witness. James Robinson or a
(17:22):
Yankee Jim, was a Canadian Frenchmanwho stood at an imposing six foot four
inches. While the average height ofthe day was five foot five, Jim
definitely stood out. One night,he and two of his friends, James
Grayson Loring and William Harris, stolea row boat belonging to Joseph Stewart and
an enos Wall. The two menfound their boat a few days later after
a washed up on the beach afew miles down the coast. The boat
(17:45):
itself was undamaged, so it's likethey just kind of took it for a
joy ride. They just borrowed it. However, the three men were arrested
and charged with grand larceny. Atthe time, the city had passed an
ordered instas stated that any theft overone hundred and fifty or two hundred and
fifty dollars would be even a deathsentence, given that the rowboat did not
have that monetary value. Added onto the crime that the men were stealing
(18:07):
the rowboat in order to steal themuch more valuable pilot boat too, they
were assuming that they took the rowboatto go get the other bigger boat.
Oh god, which then they couldbe tried for grand larson, Like we
want to kill these men. InAugust eighteenth, eighteen fifty two, the
court ruled, quote, your jurorsin the within case of James Robinson have
(18:30):
the honor to return a verdict ofguilty and to therefore a sentence him James
Robinson, to be hanged by theneck until dead. Quote is it really
their honor? Though apparently despite thethree men all taking part, Yankee Jim
was handed the harshest of verdicts. His two companions, James and William,
were sentenced to one year in prison, and after their sentence was up,
(18:52):
they left San Diego and never returned. Like you're tall and weird, we're
going to hang you. Pretty much. At first, Yankee Jim laughed about
the sentence. He was even seenlaughing throughout the trial because he felt the
crime did not fit the punishment andthat they were just trying to make a
show of him. Yeah, he'snot wrong. In fact, all the
way up to the time when theyput the noose around his neck, Yankee
Jim was in denial that they'd actuallykill him for stealing a rowboat that was
(19:15):
found in return to the owner undamaged. Right, the Catholic priest would visit
him in his jail cell, tellinghim he needs to get his affairs in
order before his death, but hestill didn't believe he was actually going to
die right. Unfortunately, once thecourts made up their mind, the decree
was unchangeable. On September eighteenth, eighteen fifty two, Yankee Jim was taken
from his adobe cell, placed ona wagon and was taken to the town
(19:36):
gallows, accompanied by two Catholic priests. The gallows were made of two beams
planted in the ground and a heavybar across the top. The wagon parked
underneath the beam and a rope wasplaced around his neck. He delivered a
farewell speech to the crowd the gallard, of which Thomas Whale he was in
attendance. He told the crowd hewas a good man that had given piles
of gold to help Poorman Right. At a quarter to three o'clock in the
afternoon, Sheriff Crossway ordered the wagondriver Stop Fisher, to drive the old
(20:00):
man, whipped the mules on thewagon moved forward. It was said that
Yankee Jim had kept his feet onthe wagon for as long as possible,
but finally they were pulled off.Since Yak Jim was about a foot taller
than the average man at the time, unfortunately, the measurement of the noose
wasn't correct for a man his size. When his feet came off the wagon,
his neck did and snapped, givinghim a quick death. No Winstead,
(20:21):
he quote swung back and forth likea pendulum until he strangled to death.
And so he hanged after one andWilliam, yes, and I remember
hearing that one William also strangled todeath. Yes, So whoever did he
fix it? I was to say, whoever created this gallows didn't know how
to measure is an idiot. It'slike measure twice, cut once, and
(20:44):
this guy just fucking eyeballed it.Measured once, cut once and was like,
yep, that's it. Probably didn'teven measure at all, just so
that looks right, Yep, thatwould hang me, so should hang everyone.
These are the only three men thatwere recorded to hang at these gallows
on all three of them did nothave a quick death. That's so sad.
Mm. No one of this houseis fucking haunted. Yes. And
(21:06):
also he made the bricks, Iknow from the ground. But these house
himself is made from the soil uponwhich these men died. Yes, so
it is in the walls forever.Yep, because that brick not going anywhere.
No, no, it's not so. The gallows were in the very
spot where the archway inside the WhaleyHouse parlor now stands. M. M
(21:29):
Anna and Thomas Whaley both believe thatYankee Jim haunted the home even when they
lived there. They'd hear heavy footstepsaround the house, and Anna would clean
to see shadow figures roaming the hallwayswhen she was alone in the home.
It said that when Anna and Thomaswould entertain guests in the home, Thomas
would mention the fact to his gueststhat as they stood under the r very
archway, hey this is where YankeeJim was hanged. Sam likes to do
that too, He's like, Hey, that arch does that Jim likes to
(21:55):
hang out in there? Yeah, dark humor. It was later thought that
the backstory of Yankee Jim being athief and a murderer who killed miners after
robbing them of their golden trinkets wasfabricated in an effort to get the crowd
against him so that the court couldjustify their verdict. The fact that he
also stood out in appearance among theaverage man of the time didn't help his
(22:15):
case either. After the Native AmericanUprising, the San Diego area was kind
of in a state of lawlessness, and the courts and the lawmen felt they
needed to do something to show theywere still needed and useful and that they
weren't afraid to put men to deathfor breaking the law. Unfortunately, the
Yankee Jim drew the short end ofthe stick there and was at the wrong
place at the wrong time. Ifhe's still haunting the Whaley House, I
wouldn't blame him for wanting revenge forthis wrongful death. See. But like
(22:37):
in that case, why didn't theyhang the other two guys too? So
like why specifically this one man ofthe three people that committed the exact same
crime was this one man? Whydidn't you just hang all three? You're
not opposed to it, clearly.I don't know why they pinpointed Yankee Jim
as being the ringleader. The onlything I can think it was because he
was a foreigner. No, Ithink that's to get out. I just
(22:57):
don't know why they get rid ofall three, Like if you're not opposed
to killing people for nothing to provethat you have, unless maybe the idea
was like, well, we're notoverbearing in our judgments, Like some times
they're like we have some sense ofmoral. Everybody's going to die if they
go to trial, yeah, right, Or just to kind of scare people
(23:21):
where it's like yeah, you willor you will not, like you're scared.
Maybe you never know. It dependson how we feel that day.
These two got off, but thisone didn't. Yep. So back to
Thomas Whaley. In eighteen fifty six, Whale first built a single story granary
on the property he purchased with bricksmade from his own brickyard, and construction
on his home began soon after. He'd hired local Native Americans to do the
(23:45):
brickwork and paid them in groceries fromhis general store that was in the plaza.
See that's useful to them, Yeah, I think so. At the
time the home was built in eighteenfifty seven, Thomas and Anna had two
children, Francis Hinton Whaley, whowas named after his business partner, and
Thomas Whaley Jr. Once the homewas complete, he opened his general store
on the first floor. It wasn'tlong after they moved into their new home
that Thomas and Anna started hearing strangenoises that go bump in the night,
(24:07):
and a letter Anna had written toThomas while he was away on a business
trip in June eighteen fifty seven, she said, quote, I'm often startled
out of my sleep in the nightthinking you have come home. End quote.
In January eighteen fifty eight, theiryounger son, Thomas Junior, fell
ill and died of Scarlett fever atthe young age of eighteen months, right
in the nursery upstairs. Six monthslater, in June, Anna gave birth
(24:30):
to their first daughter, Anna AmeliaWhale. But tragedy struck again when,
just two months after the birth ofAnna Amelia and Arson set fire destroyed Whale's
business at the Plaza. I wasgonna say, I swear I remember hearing
somewhere about their being an arson shortlyafter Thomas Whale Junior died. Yeah,
because I remember whoever heard it waslike wow, the timing on that,
(24:52):
Yeah, pretty much. This losswas devastating to the Whales, and they
decided to go back to San Franciscoand attempted to sell their home. At
this time, a friend and colleagueof Thomas Whaley moved in as caretaker and
rented out the rooms to other tenants. The Whales had three more children over
the years they were in San Francisco, George hay Ringled Whaley, Violet Eloise
Whaley, and Kurin Lillian Whaley.Thomas Whaley also took charge of three government
(25:15):
transports with stores in Sitca and Alaska, while Anna stayed with the children in
San Francisco. In eighteen sixty eight, Thomas Whalley returned to oldtown San Diego
to do some much needed repairs onhis brick home and convinced Anna to bring
the children back and they'd try theirhand there once more. Anna refused to
move back since they had settled sonicely into San Francisco. Wale was anxious
(25:36):
for a buyer or a renter forhis brick home, and that's when Thomas
Tanner, a leader of a travelingtheater troupe, came into Whaley's life.
Nice The second floor of Thomas Whaley'shome was transformed into San Diego's first commercial
theater and the second floor. Bedroomswere rented out for the performers to live
in. A set of stairs wasbuilt so theater patrons could go straight to
the theater rather than walk through theWhaley's home, which Thomas Whaley was in
(25:56):
the process of remodeling the main parlordownstairs. The theater was big enough to
supposedly fit one hundred two, onehundred and fifty patrons quote comfortably. There's
no way, and I say thatin air quotes because having been there,
Yeah, there was no way,no fucking way that one hundred, one
hundred fifty people could fit there comfortably. Maybe fifty, and I still think
it'd be uncomfortably. Yeah. Andthe stage is tiny, room is tiny.
(26:22):
Yes. In October of eighteen sixtyeight, a major earthquake shook Anna
and the children, and she decidedto move down to San Diego. After
all, it's almost like this,Yeah, that's a place that's definitely be
rocking. The Whalies stayed on thefirst floor and Tanner and his troops stayed
on the second floor. Tanner hopedto make the shows a weekly affair.
After months of preparation, the theateropened for their first show on December second
(26:45):
at eight pm, with admission costingseventy five cents for reserve seats and fifty
cents at the door. Children werehalf price. Wow. It was,
for all intents and purposes, asuccessful opening. The San Diego Union reviewed
it, saying, quote, theperformance of this troop on last on the
evening, considering the circumstances, wasvery creditable. The house was filled to
utmost capacity, which is a matterof congratulation to the manager. And I'll
(27:07):
seem pleased with the first attempt inthis place at least a theatrical performance,
notwithstanding the perfectly apparent indisposition of misterTanner, the bronchial affliction of Miss Soulidad,
the rawness of the novices, thedefective musical arrangements, the want of
capacity in the seating room, andthe smallness of the stage. We may
be pardoned for saying that our theateris a success. I'm like, that
(27:30):
has a rollercoaster ride of like insultsand praise. I'm like, what are
you trying to say? It's acompliment sandwich. Okay, that's how you're
supposed to do it. You're supposedto compliment give them, So that's just
that's how you deliver bad news ina kind way. That's what I only
seemed like, and I'm like, this is fascinating, but like I was
(27:53):
wondering what the conditions work, becauseit was like, we would consider this
a success under the conditions. Yep, during these certain specific conditions that would
not be successful otherwise, right, and I will proceed to list them out
alphabetically. Unfortunately, the indisposition thatwas affecting Thomas Tanner didn't improve, and
(28:14):
fifty five year old Thomas Tanner passedaway on December eighteenth, just two weeks
after their opening show. Regardless ofthe show went on one more time,
and the troop disbanded shortly after.Oh I thought there was only one.
Nope. They tried to do itagain, and the San Diego Union said
it was successful, but the TannerTroop was no longer the Tanner Troupe because
(28:34):
Tanner was no longer a thing.Now we're just a troop, and I
don't know if we can keep ittogether. We need a leader, so
they disbanded after the second time. The theater closed on February twentieth, just
two months after it opened, andby August of eighteen sixty nine, the
County of San Diego was renting thespace for storage of court records and to
be used as a meeting space forthe Board of Supervisors. The former granary
(28:56):
was transformed into San Diego Second Courthouse. After the theater closed, Whale partnered
with Philip Crossway and opened a generalstore on the first floor called Whale and
Crosswath General Store. If Crosswath soundsfamiliar to you, I mentioned him earlier,
yep, in the fact that hewas the sheriff and executioner of Yankee
Jim almost twenty years prior. Iwas like, that name sounds familiar.
(29:18):
I remembered her saying that, yep. And we only partnered with him to
open up a general store in hishome because that makes sense. Two hats.
Unfortunately, the store wasn't successful andit closed. They had a liquidate
all of their items. Walie thenturned the store into a saloon and purchase
a liquor license that was to berenewed quarterly. You know, when life
(29:38):
gives you lemons, you make liquor. I again, yeah, you make
a gin and tonic. Now youmight be thinking, how can he sell
liquor right next to the courthouse. It was an odd set up having the
bar right next to it, buthe offered only to operate the saloon when
the court wasn't in session, andthe court was okay with that. That
(29:59):
makes sense. They're like, allright, cool, as long as you
kids aren't around you while we're doingsome growing up stuff. Good. So
it's like as soon as like courtsout of sessions, so it's done for
the day, the jurors can gonext door happy hours, I mean,
drink before I make this decision.Man, exactly, this is exactly how
we're doing. In eighteen sixty eight, Newtown was starting to be established and
(30:23):
a movement began where they wanted torelocate the seat of government to Newtown.
Oldtowners refused to hand over the courtdocuments. However, one night, while
Thomas Willie was gone on business, men broke into the Whaley House through the
staircase that led right into the oldtheater now store room, and they broke
the French doors to gain entry.Anna Whale was home, and the men
held Anna at gunpoint on the stairswhile the children were in their bedrooms upstairs,
(30:48):
and stole the records to move themto Newtown. Sounds a whole lot.
Like the law stuff wasn't working hangingpeople willy nilly. It only works
when they wanted to, when theyhang people willy nilly. But they lost
their gallows. Yes, they're supereffective gallows. Yeah. Despite Thomas Waley're
writing numerous letters to the Board ofSupervisors telling them that their rent agreement wasn't
expired and that they needed to payhim for rent and the damages they did
(31:10):
to his home, his letters wereignored. Surprise, surprise. After the
court relocated to Newtown, Thomas Whale, they closed the saloon and opened a
real estate office in its space. He then transformed the place into a new
schoolhouse to replace the one room schoolhouseas children attended nearby, because why not
have the space. He's like, well, I don't need this anymore.
It's not a corethhouse anymore. It'slike, ah, yeah, I'm gonna
(31:32):
I want my kids to learn here. Let's just like, you know,
work from home exactly. We don'thave to have to take you to school.
It's right there, it's right nexttime. Just go through those doors.
You have no you literally have noexcuse anymore. You wake up,
you go downstairs. Thank you, wake up you have breakfast, and you
go to school exactly. In eighteenseventy three, Thomas had to return to
New York to settle his late father'sestate with the siblings, since they had
all not received their inheritance. Thelawsuit dragged on, and Thomas Waley was
(31:56):
forced to be apart from his familyfor six years while at the ship.
What the fuck? Yeah, Ihave no fucking clue what the fuck happened.
Thomas Waley's financials were also dwindling atthis time, so he needed the
money. While Thomas was away,Anna and the children kept themselves entertained with
parties and gatherings. Anna loved musicand loved entertaining guests. Eventually, Thomas
returned home to his wife and children, who were now very much croton like
(32:20):
they do. Over the years yearsthat you were six ships you were gone.
That's insane. Yeah. George Wallyleft the home in eighteen seventy nine
after getting into constant arguments with hisfather about wanting to be a musician.
Thomas wanted his son to follow inhis footsteps and be a businessman. He
found refuge at a downtown die barand played his violin. He also adopted
his mother's maiden name de Launie anddropped Whaley from his name. He later
(32:43):
performed at the Horton Hall in eighteeneighty and was well received. And he
said that he was self taught theviolin for two years and he did really
well for himself, so music ranin the family. On January fifth,
eighteen eighty two, Anna Amelia Whaleyand her sister Violet Eloise Waley married in
a double wedding to their spouses.Anna Amelia married her first cousin, John
T. Whaley, the son ofThomas Waley's brother, Henry Hurst Whaley,
(33:06):
and Violet married a man named GeorgeT. Bertolachi. When Violet was on
her honeymoon, two weeks later, she woke to find a letter by her
husband stating that he was leaving herafter he discovered her family didn't have enough
money to pay off his massive gamblingdebts. He admitted to being a con
man that only married Violet for herfamily's money. Well, at least he
admitted it. I guess yeah.George said he returned to her once he
(33:27):
got a ship together. However,Violet was ashamed and returned to her family.
Her family forced her to divorce George, but being a divorced woman in
that day and age was a deathsentence. No one wanted to associate with
Violet, and she never recovered fromthe humiliation she felt by being abandoned by
her husband manager. She was onlywet nineteen, She was young going through
this. She's only nineteen going throughall this and only maid considered. Yeah,
(33:49):
of course she feels like her lifeis over, especially at that time
when a woman's worth was only whoshe was married to. Yeah. So
on July fifth, she attempted suicideby throwing herself and the family sister,
but her father caught her and wasable to rescue her and pull her out.
She was then held in the masterbedroom under suicide watch, essentially,
and she continued to journal in hersorrow. She was diagnosed with melancholy,
(34:09):
which was just a fancy word fordepression. Then on August nineteenth, eighteen
eighty five, at about six thirtyin the morning, Violet took her father's
thirty two caliber revolver with her tothe outhouse in the back of the house,
aimed it at her chest and fired. At the time, her father
was in the kitchen and had justcalled out to her, asking if she'd
like a beach. Then he heardthe gunfire. He ran outside and saw
(34:31):
what she had done, and broughther back in the house and laid her
on the couch in the parlor room. Violet had just missed her heart and
hit her lungs. She spent herlast minutes alive in complete silence until she
passed away. She had written asuicide note that she was tired of life
and quoted a poem by Thomas Hoodcalled The Bridge of Size, saying quote
mad from life's history, glad todeath's mystery, swift to be hurled anywhere,
(34:54):
anywhere out of the world. Andshe was only twenty two years old
at the time of Violet's death. Her younger sister, Krin Lilian, was
engaged, but her fiance broke itoff for fear of scandal. After all
the tragedy he encountered, Thomas Walleydecided to build a single story home at
nine three three State Street in downtownSan Diego, where he lived until his
(35:14):
death on December fourteenth, eighteen ninety, at the age of sixty seven.
The Whaley House remained vacant until nineteeno nine, when Thomas's son Francis decided
to restore as it was left indisrepair for more than two decades, only
being rented out occasionally to people whowere just passing by. He reopened the
home as a museum and tourist attraction, and he entertained visitors by playing the
guitar. Anna Karan, Francis, and George Whaley all lived in the house
(35:37):
again in nineteen twelve. Anna Waleydied in the house on February twenty fourth,
nineteen thirteen, at the age ofeighty. Francis died a year later
on November nineteenth, nineteen fourteen. Then George died January fifth, nineteen twenty
eight. Kurrin Lilian lived in thehouse until her death on September fourteenth,
nineteen fifty three. Anna Amelia Waleypassed away in Modesto, California, at
(35:59):
the age of forty five in nineteenoh five. In nineteen fifty six,
the house was put up for saleand it was going to be demolished until
Jim and June Reading stepped in andconvinced the County of San Diego to restore
the home and open it for publictourism again. The Whalley House museum reopened
in May nineteen sixty and June andJim Reading handled its operations until they Save
Our Heritage organization took over in twothousand. It's now owned by Historic Tours
(36:21):
of America and you can visit ittoday. I've gotten probably over ten times,
mostly nighttime tours, now three paranormalinvestigation tours, which I highly recommend
if you're ever in San Diego. They're great. The dosins are all great.
The house is really cool. Theyhave a lot of like original furniture.
Paranormal investigations are awesome. It takesplace that like eleven PM to like
one am. It's one of herfavorite things to take people too when they
(36:45):
visit her. Yes, come visitme. I take you to Whaley House
and we get some Mexican food inall times. Yeah, delicious. That
is the history of the Whaley House, setting you up for all the paranormal
stuff that's going to happen. Yeis one of the most No, this
is the most haunted house in America, America's most haunted house. Yes,
(37:07):
as they advertise on the signs outsideof it, Yes, exactly. They've
got nice lights on them and everythingfancy. It's legit, and as you
mentioned, a lot of the familymembers were documenting that they were noticing that
the house was pretty haunted even beforethey passed away. So to start us
off on the more chilling side ofthe Whale House today, let's take a
(37:29):
look at the time Ghost Adventures visitedold town San Diego again to check out
the most haunted house in America forthemselves back in twenty fourteen. As far
as I can tell, they werethe first paranormal investigators with a film crew
at least to do an investigation ofthe Whaley House. Back in season eleven.
During their preliminary investigation, they speakwith the founder of the San Diego
Ghost Hunters to discuss and look ata photo she had taken of what appeared
(37:52):
to be an apparition of what couldbe a man coming in through the upstairs
window near the door to violence room. Yeah do In this photo is also
one of the head Dosins, JokiTolentino, whom they had spoken with earlier
on and had told them she oftensees figures around the house, but they
are always turned away from her.I wonder why. When they asked her,
she said something about like she figuresit's kind of a way of like,
(38:15):
I don't bother them, they don'tbother me, you know. They
acknowledge that I'm not here to harmthem, so they're just kind of doing
their own thing, is the wayshe kind of viewed it. Okay.
They call her in to ask ifshe had ever seen the photo before,
to which she says that she hasnot, and Zach and Nick tell her
that once they realized she was theperson in the photo walking toward the figure
in the window, Nick made theconnection with what she had told them earlier
(38:36):
about how the spirits follow her around. Nick notes that it must feel kind
of nice to have validation like thatphoto of what she has been seeing and
experiencing. I don't know if nicewouldn't be. That's literally how he phrased
it. He was like, itmust be nice to have that kind of
validation that these things do in factfollow you around the house, which she's
not being gasol, I guess.Zach takes this one step further and says,
(38:58):
it's chilling to note that the figureappears to be looking away from Jokie,
though I honestly don't know how hegets that from this photo, since
the figure doesn't have any defining featuresof like where the head appears to be,
Like you can see where the headis, but there's nothing to tell
you which way it's facing. There'sno hair or anything like that to be
like, oh, no, it'sdefinitely facing outside, but it's coming in.
(39:19):
So did he just get that fromwhat she was mentioning that when she
sees them, they're usually facing awayfrom her. That's what I think.
I think he saw that and waslike, oh, yeah, it's looking
away from you. Yeah. Duringthese interviews, I think is where the
first ideas of Yankee Jim specifically targetingpolice officers comes from, as the founder
Lady from earlier on talked about thosebeing kinds of people that would often end
(39:43):
up with the marks around the neckas though from a noose. I remember
at our last paranormal investigation, Sammentioned that there's an idea out there that
Yankee Jim seems to target police officers, but how would he know, Like,
how would he know a that you'rea police officer. They have an
air about them, They have anair about them. Yet because like the
officers nowadays, even if someone wereto show up in uniform, they don't
(40:04):
look the same as they did whenhe was alive. So, going back
to our last priormal investigation with Sam, he showed us a woman that had
the red marks around her neck.Yeah, so he showed us a photo
of a woman's neck. Yeah,he didn't say if she was a police
officer or not, but like, but we did see a photo of someone
who had recently had that mark.Yeah. We also learn that one time
(40:25):
in nineteen sixty four, while RegisPhilbin had been visiting the house, he
claimed to have seen the apparition ofViolet through the archway and the parlor.
During these early interviews, Nick tellZac about suddenly feeling as though he had
pressure on his chest and like hecouldn't breathe while he had been standing talking
to Aaron. And that was theend of that I felt when when we
were in violence room that one time. Oh, interesting, we'll talk about
(40:49):
our experiences. Yeah, we dohave to sell, but we have some.
So after getting the stories of otherpeople's experiences in the house, the
guys get ready to make a gameplan for their investigation, and even mentioned
bringing in Bill Chappell to join themfor this one. If you don't know
who that is, he is theman responsible for creating a lot of the
gear that the guys use on theirinvestigation, including the ovolists and I think
(41:09):
even the SLS camera. Okay,so he is the creator of the obelist.
Nice Bill sets up an elaborate systemof microphones and mirrors and the hopes
of being able to use science tohelp make EVPs be audible in real time.
So there's an ambient sort of hummingsound from this system when they enter
the house through the door at theback. So it's not a very quiet
investigation. So it's like having yourspirit box on full blast. It's not
(41:31):
even like the spirit box per se. It's like having your digital recorder playing
while you're talking. Does that makesense interesting? Yeah, Like it's just
like some sort of baseline noise that. Yeah. They get some interference with
the lasers a couple of times, which results in a louder sort of static,
but no actual voices coming through oranything, although Zach claims to have
(41:53):
heard a harsh whisper which isn't pickedup on camera. While Zach continues to
try to communicate with whoever is inthe room with them, they note that
the energy felt like it shifted, and then soon after a loud thud has
heard upstairs. I'll be honest,I'm glad we don't hear any like real
loud banging sorts of noises whenever we'vebeen in the house, So we will
talk about this. But the lastone we went on wells, the first
(42:15):
time I ever heard like shuffling witheye. I heard with my naked eyes.
Is that what you do when yourise? That's what I've been doing
wrong all this time, listening withmy naked ears, not my naked eyes.
Dammit, do you hear with youreyes? Aaron, here's footsteps coming
(42:37):
from upstairs, which again isn't pickedup, but he goes to investigate,
and though he doesn't find anything,he says he can feel like something is
up there. He sits down inthe theater and comments on how the sound
from the speaker system seems to begradually getting quieter, which you can hear
when suddenly a weirdly like rhythmic sortof humming starts, very briefly, and
then a quiet male voice is pickedup, seeming to say no power okay.
(43:00):
Zach proceeds upstairs to try and gentlyprovoke Yankee Jim. He really does
gently provoke which is bizarre for him. Gently into manifesting, and when he
asks the spirits to make a soundto show him where they are, Bill
hears a thump from the master bedroomthat is picked up by Nick's audio but
not heard by Zache, so theycan hear it downstairs coming from upstairs,
(43:22):
but Zach, who is upstairs, doesn't hear it. That's weird. It
is weird. Nick goes upstairs soonafter this, and they initially think they
hear a woman's voice, but debunkit as a squeaky step that Nick stepped
up, which is kind of afunny thing watching Zach sort of like shimmy
about, yeah, shimmy back andforth on this one step to make it
make the noise. Not long afterthis, the alarm inside the house starts
(43:43):
going off about an hour before theteam was told it would, and when
Zach follows the employee inside to turnit off as soon as it's quiet again,
you can hear the whispered sound ofa man's voice. This was one
thing I definitely heard, even beforeit was mentioned, and Zach says before
they replay that they can't figure outwhat's being said, but I swear I
heard it. Saying he heard mevery fucking clearly. And you know how
(44:07):
much hearing disembodied voices like this clearlyunsettles me in these videos. Yeah,
and it's clearly an intelligent haunting becauseit's reacting to something that the guys did,
that they're doing right then, Yeah, exactly. The alarm starts going
off again about half an hour later, which they've been told is one of
the way his spirits let investigators knowit's time to get the fuck out,
(44:28):
which Zach of course takes to meanthey've hidden Nerve. So he goes to
the theater with Aaron to take somephotos while Aaron just talks. After a
while, Aaron leaves and Zach callsNick to film behind him because he feels
like nails are slowly moving down hisneck and back and leaving a sort of
electricity charged feeling behind Oh. Hecontinues taking photos of the stage and catches
(44:50):
one where white, translucent hands withlong nails seems to appear in the bottom
right. Oh like that. Zachof course decides he wants to be alone
with a s it now, andwhile he feels the feeling on the back
of his neck again as he movesonto the stage and makes his way to
the master bedroom. He doesn't captureanything further, and that concludes the investigation.
Moving on to twenty seventeen, Ryanand Shane of BuzzFeed Unsolved decided to
(45:13):
pay the home a visit, andthey've recently gone back again. But I
kind of felt like Shane was abit more respectful the first time around than
he was this most recent time.Yeah, with the new show that they
have, Yeah, he was purposelylike fucking with Ryan. Yeah, he
was purposely knocking, calling Hay stufflike that. Like he was deliberately just
being in general kind of an ass. Yeah, the first time around.
(45:36):
He still does that a little bit, but it's not that bad. Still,
with their method of investigating, theydidn't really turn up a whole lot
of evidence worth noting here. Butinterestingly, Ryan hurd a disembodied breath in
his ear the first time and adisembodied voice saying hey the second time,
So both times they got a disembodiedsomething. But I mentioned the way they
investigate because neither one of them seemsto take it all that seriously. Like
Ryan is genuinely terrified of being thereand doesn't want to communicate with anything and
(46:00):
Shane could care. But also thesecond time someone said hello or hay to
Ryan too, So whatever this thingis wants to communicate with him. Yeah,
so twice most times he was there, they said the same thing.
Yeah, exactly. Other than that, the first time Ryan got a strange
feeling in one of the chairs inthe jury box shortly after Shane's flashlight died
(46:21):
inexplicably, and the second time theygot some responses through the estis method,
but nothing that made any kind ofsense. Next up, we have the
Halter files from back in twenty nineteen, so much more recently, but not
nearly as recently as the YouTubers Ifound that have visited, so still back
when the house was still mostly filledwith original artifacts from when the whales lived
(46:42):
there. And let me tell you, this crew got some interesting stuff.
Oh yeah, because Hans Holter wasthere, when Richards Filman was there,
right. Yeah. So, Now, if you've never watched this series before,
like me, the premise is thata group of modern paranormal investigators have
recently discovered or gained access to thefiles of one of the first ever ghost
hunters, Hans Holtzer. They gothrough the files and revisit the places he's
(47:04):
investigated to verify or gain new evidencefrom these locations. This particular episode starts
out with two of the investigators sittingwith hans daughter watching a film on a
projector of a session that appears tobe in the courtroom with medium Sibilique under
a trance during a seance, talkingabout someone having had control of Violet when
she killed herself, saying, quote, there's a great deal of confusion in
(47:25):
this house. There's a young girlin the parlor chess trouble. Someone had
control of her due She goes onfrom that to say, quote, people
quarreled in this spot. He diedhere unhappy. He wants all this house
for himself. He is laughing endquote. I don't know if it's Henry
or Gotta. Yeah. See whenyou were telling me all the things you
(47:47):
were finding, I had this episodein mind, and you're gonna get You're
gonna get all kinds of things. At this point, they talk about Yankee.
Jim introduced who he was and whatthe land was before Thomas Whaley built
the house, and one of theinvestigators mentions having spoken with the director who
owned the Whaley house at the timethis director had expressed a desire for the
(48:08):
team to reopen the case since staffand visitors had been experiencing an increasing amount
of activity within the home. Forreference, The team is made up of
psychic medium Cindy Kaza, equipment expertShane Pittman, and paranormal investigator Dave Schrader.
Cindy is sent up into the housewith Shane, who was recording with
(48:28):
a thermal camera, and Cindy,of course, is mentioned to be going
in blind of the entire case, and the guys don't know anything outside of
what was within the Holter files.Cindy mentions feeling dizzy and like this is
a very active house, and alsothat she feels pulled to the parlor.
She talks about feeling creeped out inwhat is currently known as the Legacy Room
and that someone either died in thatroom or spent a lot of time in
(48:51):
their unwell, stating that the roomfeels heavy. I don't like the legacy
room and it was a bedroom yes, once upon a time. Next,
she feels pulled to the kitchen, where she says she keeps seeing a pool
of blood, lots and lots ofblood, and that she gets the sense
that it's the woman she mentioned beforewho died a gruesome death angry with her
husband. But why the kitchen. That's not where violent? I know,
(49:13):
I was thinking the same thing,is it? Because that's where Thomas had
to bring her in through the doorthat was next to the kitchen, to
bring her into the parlor. Thatwas my suspicion. But why specifically did
she go into the kitchen. Granted, she was in the doorway of the
kitchen when she was saying, Oh, it's because Thomas was in the kitchen.
I'm cutting the dining room. Oh, Thomas willed the kitchen adjacent to
(49:34):
the dining room. Yeah, buthe was in the kitchen cutting peaches and
that's when he heard the gunshot whenhe said, hey, vileent, you
want a peach? And then pool? Oh. Never interesting. She also
says that she was feeling that thiswoman sensed she was left for another woman,
and that she felt betrayed, sobetrayed in fact, that she loses
her mind completely. Yeah. Cindyproceeds upstairs, stopping halfway to say that
(49:55):
the energy ahead of her feels unsettledand angry and crazy. When she reaches
the second floor, She stops betweenthe Violet's room and the nursery and says
she feels like she wants to dosome automatic writing down on the bed she
felt uncomfortable sitting on downstairs, soback in the legacy room. Interesting.
She sits down with a sharpie andillegal pad on the bed in the legacy
room, and after a moment, she starts writing several pages. You don't
(50:16):
actually see what she's right like. You can see her writing, but she
doesn't write allegedly. She starts writingseveral pages, saying she feels a male
and a female presence within the housethat never seemed to interact, as though
they each have their own separate realmsthat they exist within. Oh. She
says that the man likes causing painand seeing people hurt. Also that he
(50:37):
affects electricity and is going to makethe camera turn off. Not long after
this, Shane's thermal camera turns offand he can't turn That reminds me of
what we got. Yeah, wewill talk about that. Keep that in
your brain. Cindy says she doesn'tlike this guy and that she wants to
leave, then stops mid sentence, staring past Chain, which of course he
(50:58):
doesn't like because nobody likes that. No, he asks what she sees,
and she says he's right there standingbehind Shane and that she can see him.
Fuck. No, Shane points outthat they're brand new camera is dead,
and Cindy says they should get outof there. Falk the fuck.
The next day, while speaking toDean Glass, the historian, about the
(51:19):
history of the house, he becomeshesitant in his speech while talking about Yankee
Jim, and when Dave asks aboutthis, Dean states, quote, even
if they're not right here with me, they're hearing me, and I want
to be careful what I say, which struck Dave as odd because why would
a grown man be afraid of whatsome centuries old ghosts think of what he
has to say? Because he's hada century to charge his power. Well,
(51:43):
also, I mean, he's obviouslyexperienced some shit. This makes him
wonder about if Dean is the onlyone who has feelings like this. And
they speak to an employee who hadfelt dizzy and fainted under the archway while
he had been vacuating the parlor. The boy stated that when he came to
he's suspected that perhaps he had donesomething wrong, and Dave clarifies that this
kid's first thoughts upon waking up aren'talong the lines of am I sick,
(52:07):
but instead more like I must havedone something to deserve this, which the
employee confirms, which is again kindof an odd way to think about that,
unless something in there is making youthink that way. Yeah, Like
it's my fault on the problem, right, Like, oh, I shouldn't
have been doing that. Yeah.Shane proceeds to play a portion of the
seance with Sybil, where when askedif there's anybody with her, she says,
(52:30):
quote, he does not like noiseexcept when he makes it. He
will make even more noise unless yougo away. So they suspect the sound
of the vacuum probably pissed off themale spirit. Later that night, in
an effort to confirm or deny ifYankee Jim is the dark presence within the
Whaley House, Dave and Cindy visitthe nearby graveyard El Composanto, where he's
(52:50):
allegedly laid to rest, and Cindyleads Dave to a random spot among unmarked
graves and states that you can seetwo men planning an ambush to take back
their land to barn on fire. She also says that Yankee Jim is definitely
not the dark force haunting the house. Oh, now you're understanding why I
wanted you to look into him.Yes. The next day, Dave is
(53:13):
presented with some new information explaining thethings that Cindy saw in the graveyard the
night before, about Antonio Gata andJuan Verdugo and William Marshall. He is
also presented with some letters from AnnaWhale confirming that the house was haunted even
back when the Whalies were living there, and that the house is doomed and
possessed of evil spirits yep, perAnna's actual writing. The night of the
third day, the group of threedoes their investigation of the home. To
(53:37):
start, Dave goes upstairs to thetheater with a motion detection camera essentially an
SLS, while Cindy and Shane andgo to the downstairs bedroom with a thermal
camera. So back to the legacyroom with the two of them, Cindy
feels the presence of a woman pacingbehind her back, which is not picked
up on the thermal camera, butup in the theater, Dave picks up
a stick figure anomaly on the stagein front of him. Dave asks the
(53:59):
anomaly to give him a sign thatit can see him by raising its arm,
and it disappears. He's like,no, yeah, it's like,
I don't want to do that. But when he plays back the audio on
his audio recorder because he was doingan EVP kind of session, then from
that moment a voice says yes veryclearly, as he says, let me
(54:19):
know if you can see me likeI can see you. I'm not going
to do your parlor tricks, butI see you like I ain't gonna dance
for you, but I do seeyou. It's like you didn't pay me
seventy five cents to be here,so I'm not going to perform for you.
We're just kind of hear benefiting mein any way. They meet up
again downstairs to talk more about thethings Cindy is feeling, and while they
are talking, you can hear aclear thud in another part of the house.
Cindy starts feeling a tightness in herchest and like a man is standing
(54:42):
behind her, so Dave asks ifthis is the energy that's been there,
and another thud and some footsteps canbe heard, maybe by the stairs Cindy
says she doesn't like the feeling ofthe presence behind her and that he's just
standing there being threatening. That it'sthe same man from the night before.
I don't like that. She mentionsthat he's telling her quote, I'm going
to fuck up his knees, andthen she asks Dave if he has bad
(55:05):
knees, which he confirms. Shestarts feeling like she's going to fall over
and sits down in a nearby chair. A creek can be heard behind the
guys shortly after that, while noneof them are moving now, mind you,
Cindy has not learned any of thenew information that David had learned.
After hearing what she thinks sounds likeJohn Vargas, Dave comments that that's very
similar to one Verdugo, one ofAntonio Gada's men that have been hanged at
(55:30):
the gallows where the arch and theparlor now stands. Cindy states that she
thinks that might be who is thenegative presence, and Dave says they're going
to do an EVP session under thearch. While Dave asks his questions to
Juan Verdugo, Cindy comments that he'slaughing at them and has been the whole
time. Yea. When Dave asksif he influenced Violet to commit suicide,
(55:52):
Cindy says that he's repeating quote theytook from me, now I take from
them, and before she starts coughingafter saying that this is a thing that's
happening. She starts to cough andthen a loud bang can be heard from
somewhere else, and Dave says itsounds like a gunshot. Oh shit.
They decide this is a good timeto listen back on the audio recorder,
(56:13):
and when Dave's voice on the recordersays, quote, let us know that
you're here. Now, there area couple of bangs that were not heard
during the session, and then he'sshoved sideways into Shane and falls to the
floor. What you literally see thishappen? Oh wow? Now, the
way this plays out honestly looks likewhat he says happened, That something shoved
him. He leaves the house toclear his head, and Cindy tells one
(56:34):
that his time is up and thatit's time to go. She also mentions
that the house is evil before sheand Shane go out to check on Dave,
which kind of makes sense when youconsider the fact that it is made
from the very soil upon which thesemen died. Yeah, Dave makes a
comment similar to a theory, andI thought I've had since visiting the house
to investigate ourselves and hearing about someof the other experiences that this presence has
(56:59):
been parading around this house under theguise of Thomas and Violet and Yankee Jim.
But now they've given him a nameand he's angry. While reviewing their
evidence the next day, Shane showsDave something he and Cindy had yet to
find out about. After Dave leftthe house after being attacked, Cindy had
called out and asked, Juan Verdugo, is that you in the recorder?
(57:19):
The response that can be heard tothat is a very deep, slow laugh
that almost sounds demonic. Nope,And that is the last piece of evidence
that gathered from their time in theWhale House. Suck. Yeah, that
one gave a lot to think about, Yeah, especially our last investigation.
Now we move on to some ofthe YouTubers yea, all right, that
(57:42):
have taken the opportunity to do privateinvestigations within the house. Something we're planning
to do ourselves in the very nearfuture. Hopefully near future, but future
we're hoping. I mean, theplan is there though, the plants.
Yes. First, we have achannel that's simply called Overnight, and they
investigated back in February of this year. Although these investigations were this year,
yeah, because for a few yearsthey stopped doing the paranormal investigation. So
(58:07):
when they brought it back, Ijumped on that shit. So essentially,
the premise of this channel seems tobe like this group of four friends Elton,
Corey, Corbin, and Matt andin their Overnight series of haunted locations,
they film in the house overnight foreight hours, and stuff starts happing
pretty much right away for them.As their guide is talking with them in
the legacy room, the curtain dividingthis room from the parlor falls down behind
(58:28):
Elton for no apparent reason, fallsdown. He's not touching it, it
just fell, okay, Yeah, and one of the camera guys lights die.
While they're talking about the dead lightbattery. The sound of something scraping
along the floor right above their headscan be heard, like furniture moving.
M the fuck. Yeah, Andthat's like the nursery the room right about
(58:49):
the legacy room is violence room.Yeah, that's not okay because there's nothing
in there that can be moved aroundright now. Not. Then, after
finishing their tour of the house, the guy's accompany their guide outside and do
a short trivia quiz to decide whichthree will later walk to the Al Campo
Santo's cemetery down the street to seewhere Yankee Jim is buried. What was
(59:09):
involved in this quiz? They're veryeasy questions, but it's whoever like raise
their hand first, okay, andwhoever was the last person to not get
a chance to answer was the onewho has to stay alone in the house
while the other three go to thecemetery for the entire length of the time
it takes them to get there andcome back. Corey ends up losing because
(59:30):
it gets darker there. Yeah, and no, the camera guys are leaving
too, Like, it's literally justhim. He doesn't have light. I
don't remember I feels a flashlight withhim or not, but he's just alone.
But this is the one thing that'sgoing to happen later in the episode.
So the boys, all four ofthem, well technically six, re
enter the house, Corey claiming tohave seen someone, so he had like
(59:50):
disappeared to go to the bathroom. As he's walking into the house to rejoin
the gentleman with him, he swearshe sees someone sitting at Thomas's desk and
he thought it was one of theguys. But then when he saw where
the guys were and he looked backat the desk, there was nobody there.
So he saw an operation, likea full bodied operation, just sat
(01:00:12):
in a chair at the desk, which Sam says, the desk has a
trigger object because that's actually Thomas Willey'sdesk. Yeah, so it could have
been Thomas, Yeah, he said. Whoever he saw sitting there was just
wearing black. The four then decidedto do a seance in the courtroom to
open up communication, just as likea friendly hello, this is who we
are and we are here to sayhikay. Corbin suddenly gets up and leaves
with stomach pain, which Elton worriesis a huge no no, similar to
(01:00:37):
leaving a wigi board session without sayinggoodbye. Yes, not sure if that's
true. They just didn't know. They tried to close it in a way,
any kind of communication session you're doing, you have to close it.
You can't just walk away. Youhave to say okay, thank you,
we're done, goodbye, like anytype of communication, ucation, WIGI,
seance, EVP, all that stuff. Yeah, as long as you do
it before you leave, yes,the building. But I feel like something
(01:01:00):
something like a seance and something likeWeiji board, like their actual sessions,
that can have an opening and andclosing two versus when you're just doing your
investigation and you're doing EVP s,spearitbox things like that, and at which
point then you can just do yoursas you leave, overarching goodbye as you
leave. But like, I feellike a seance and Weiji board session have
like a certain formality to them thatcan't have the opening and closing. Yeah,
(01:01:22):
like you're connected, Like he getsup, breaks the circle and leaves
the building. Yeah, and thatstomach pain could be something forcing him to
break the seance to get away fromeverybody. Yeah. So, while Corbin
seems to be throwing up in thebathroom outside, Shelton speculates that Matt is
the next one to have something happenedto him since something has happened to the
(01:01:43):
other three. And while they're talkingabout this, the cat ball they set
up on the table starts going off, as well as the one on the
final destination judges bench behind him takeoff one end. They're like confirming that,
I guess it's his. When Corbinleaves the bathroom, Corey asks him
if he's okay and what happen, and Corbin tells him it just suddenly felt
like something was stabbing him in thestomach. When Corbin returns to the courtroom,
(01:02:06):
the rempod, which had not goneoff at any point yet, starts
going off just out of nowhere. When this one gentleman walks in, Elton
teases right from the beginning that he'sbrought along something incredible to aid them in
their investigation, and it has beensitting on the judges bench covered up since
before the other three entered the building. When he starts slowly pulling off the
velvet covering to reveal a second covering, both catballs go off simultaneously, so
(01:02:30):
again, the one on the tableand the one of the judges bench.
Something's excited. Yeah. He pullsoff the second covering to reveal the Annabelle
doll in her k Hey, whyit can't be the real one? It's
not, but he doesn't say thatuntil the end. I think, I'm
not going to give it. What'shis name, Tony, Tony. He's
not going to give it to him, I know. At this point,
(01:02:50):
Elton decides it's the perfect time forthe three guys to leave Corey alone in
the Whiteley House while they go tothe cemetery. So he unveils this Annabelle
doll and he's like, all right, we're gonna leave now bye. He
decides to hang out in the parlorto keep himself away from Annabelle, and
he sets up the music box ona nearby chest to point at the space
in front of him while he sitson the couch at the front of the
parlor, so he's like at thosefront windows. The music box goes off
(01:03:12):
briefly, and not long after that, clear footsteps can be heard further in
the house. More footsteps and maybelike a thud kind of like a door
closing can be heard, and thenthe ram pod starts going off. Where's
the ram pod? At this point, if I remember right, it was
under the arch and he's in there, because it wasn't like right next by
the front window. Yeah, andthe music boxes on the chest like right
there under that window. Corey asksfor confirmation that the spirit he had seen
(01:03:37):
earlier was Thomas Whaley, but noneof the devices go off, so he
asks it perhaps it was another spirit. Yep, and the ram pod starts
going off again. It stops assoon as he asks whatever is there to
stop touching it. Oh polite. This happens again when he asks for confirmation
if the entity is an adult adultbehind. Soon after this, the others
(01:03:57):
return and they all get something tostand in front of the music box to
keep it going by promising it they'lldance with it, and they do all
the music store going they're dancing.Hey, that's like when you were dancing
with not Peter. It's a cosmopolitan. They really seem to enjoy that.
They they like when you interact withthem instead of just talking at them.
It seems like they ask whatever itis to step away from the music box
so they can ask questions, andit does. So. It had been
(01:04:19):
going off NonStop up until they saidokay, now can you step away,
and it stopped. It sets themusic box off again when they ask if
it was executed on the property, and again when they ask if they're standing
in the place it was executed. As they move up to the arch.
Soon after, the music box stopsworking. Like the lights keep lighting up,
but the crank isn't cranking at all. That's weird. Yeah, it
(01:04:42):
was a bizarre one because they wentto go check and see if the if
the track had been removed, andthat wasn't. That was fine, It
just stopped cranking. That's so theymove upstairs to the master bedroom to do
the STIs method, and after afew responses that don't make much sense,
they seem to be communicating with Violet, hearing words like sadness and my heart.
But while they're speaking with her, their GoPro dies and the light in
(01:05:03):
the nursery shuts off. WHOA,you're not allowed in the nursery. Either
they set up a GoPro outside orthey set up a camera outside or something
like that. And you can seethe light next to the doll. Yeah,
I mentioned that because nobody's allowed inthe nursery, so nobody went in
there to turn it off. Yeah, they have like video footage of the
light turning off because they kind ofcomment like something changed, what turned off,
(01:05:24):
But they don't know they had theroom that you're not allowed in.
Yeah, the doors literally locked. Then they get the word draw through the
spirit box. So they decided todo a spirit drawing thing, which is
like using a planchet with a pencil. I've seen it in like Sam and
Colby videos too interesting, where youjust sort of let the spirits guide the
pencil to draw something that kind oflike they get what they call it a
(01:05:45):
dead flower kind of, but youdo it more collectively. I think it's
they were like, oh my god, it looks like a dead flower.
And if we're talking to Violet,Violet's a flower. It's a stretch because
it just looks like durables in thepaper. It's like when you're playing draw
something or pictionary with somebody. That'swhy I don't give much credence to it,
like how is that a flower? But while they're doing that, they
(01:06:06):
hear wood creaking in the theater,But that's where the GoPros all died,
so they have nothing to sort ofcorroborate that, So they move into the
theater to perform impromptu poetry readings. One it's time and the cat balls respond
to the idea of sending one ofthe cameramen up rampod going off. When
he finishes as if they're good job. Yeah, at least they're jovil there.
(01:06:30):
Yeah, they I think they usedthe cat balls to decide who was
going to go up, like ifit flashed or if the rampod or something
responded to like the suggestion of whowould go That was how they decided.
And then how they decided what thepoetry would be about was they used to
the opulus, so the spirits decidewhat you were going to talk about,
too, So they had to makeup a poem. Okay, how many
(01:06:53):
of them roses are red, violetsare blue? None of them did that
because you could like they it literallyhad to be whatever the spirits picked you
to talk about. They only showedlike the cameraman's poetry reading everybody else they
didn't show any of that. Theymove on to the dining room after this
and get nothing. But once theydiscuss returning to the courtroom, they hear
a thud like something fell in thedining room or in the courtroom. They
(01:07:14):
were in the dining room, butthey were talking about going back to the
courtroom. Okay, now I haven'tmentioned yet, but for most of their
time investigating, they have an audiorecorder set up with Annabelle in the courtroom,
and periodically they'll show like they'll playthe EVP. Yeah in the video,
they'll play it like they don't gocheck this out. It's something they
discovered later. So you can hearsounds of movement periodically getting picked up,
(01:07:38):
as well as an EVP saying letme out no thanks, yeah, no,
how about no. When they enteredthe courtroom, they found that the
thud they heard from the dining roomwas one of their cameras that hadn't been
recording, but it had been knockedover. It just on the floor.
It was like, fucking camera,it's not even on. Fuck it.
(01:07:59):
They decided to go finish the nightwith another seance in the courtroom, which
they fast forwarded through, so I'mnot sure what message they gave to the
spirits at this point. When theyleave the house, Elton reveals that the
Annabelle doll is not quite the realone again, but a replica he bought
and he brought to the B threeforty on the Queen Mary to have,
which is trapped all of the negativeenergy from when they were there into the
doll. So it is haunted. So it's haunted, but it's not the
(01:08:20):
original Haunted Anabolt doll, because Tonywould never let you have that if you
absolutely not. Next up, wehave Mackie and Amanda, who investigated and
posted their video back in April ofthis year. Amanda is a medium that
has been along with Sam and Colbyon a number of their investigations, though
the boys themselves don't appear to havebeen here yet, so maybe they'll show
up in the future as well.I'd be interested to see what they get,
(01:08:42):
because they got a lot of stuffat the Cosmopolitan Hotel. It would
be very interesting. Yeah. Soafter getting a full tour of the house,
the girls head upstairs with their guideand immediately hear a light sort of
tapping sound that the describe is soundinglike a bead or marble falling on the
floor, which their guide simply saysit's just the kids playing, before carrying
on with unlocking the padlock he was. Soon after that, they hear a
(01:09:04):
sort of metallic sound coming from downstairsin the dining room, like perhaps a
fork dropping. Mackie calls down thatif there's a spirit to give them a
sign. There's silence for a momentbefore another faint metallic sound afterword, Mackie
mentions having seen what she could onlydescribe as a cattail whipping around the top
part of the nursery doorway. Yeah. Their guide, Banjo, asks Amanda
(01:09:28):
how she feels in the theater, and she mentions that the room feels like
it has the most mellow energy toher, which he says he agrees with
because at some point in time thatroom had been the family's parlor room.
He calls it a very inviting roomand says that there are other rooms in
the house that are not so inviting. Mackie asks which rooms those are,
and he says for him, theyare the dining room and master bedroom.
(01:09:48):
Interesting, master bedroom being significant toour guide. Mackie starts looking behind him
again Everyone's favorite and says she justsees like a shadow, which could be
the dark framed mirrors on the wall. But they venture inside, Amanda immediately
says she feels like she has apain in her entire back, like a
(01:10:09):
pressure on her back, as ifshe fell off the bed and knocked the
windo out of herself. Suddenly, the temperature sensor starts going off on the
ram pod that they left at theback of the theater. Just as Amanda's
asking whatever is touching it to stepaway, the sound stops. Mackie says
she hears a voice say like hmmm, just behind Amanda, but she doesn't
hear it, and I couldn't pickit up in the video because it seems
(01:10:30):
to happen. At the same time, Banjo whispers something like so cool.
So you just hear a whisward socool, And I'm like, I'm pretty
sure that's the guy. Amanda asksfor whatever is there to reach out and
touch the red light of the rampod again, and not long after it
starts to go off again. Justafter, a faint sort of dragging sound
can be heard, like the samekind of dragging sound that the other guy's
(01:10:51):
got, like dragging furniture, buta lot more faint, like it was
further away from where they were atgross Mackie goes back and the master bedrooms,
who plays another rampod, and whileshe's in there holding it and listening
to Banjo talk, the green lightsgo off briefly in her hands. She
puts the rompod down and they startsetting up some cat balls when the ram
pod goes off in the theater again, stopping as soon as Amanda asks again
(01:11:15):
for them to stop. Amanda missesthe cat ball in the master bedroom doorway
going off at first, but whenMackie asks whatever is there to make it
go off again, it promptly startslighting up again. The ram pod in
the theater goes off again, stoppingbefore Amanda finishes asking them to stop again,
but then the one in the masterbedroom starts to go off, and
a moment later that one also stops. The cat ball in the doorway also
(01:11:35):
starts to light up like something movingthrough. Mackie introduces herself to Missus Whaley
and asks for permission to play thepiano in the theater, and both rampods
start to go off at the sametime. Amanda tells her to stop the
rampods when she's ready for Mackie tostart playing, and they stop going off.
Mackie starts to play, and Amandatells Anna to set off any of
(01:11:57):
their devices if she's enjoying the music, and the cat ball starts light up
again. While Mackie is talking aboutsuddenly feeling really hot while playing the piano,
the temperature sensor on the rampod andthe master bedroom starts to go off,
and then their camera overheats and shutsoff. Oh wow, mind you.
Aside from the one time I mentionedthe green light going off, the
only thing going off on these rampodsis the temperature sensors the entire time.
(01:12:19):
So it's not like something's like walkingaround it. Yeah, it's just manipulating
the environment. Yeah, changing thetemperature in the room. Yeah. At
this point, they start recording withtheir phone and the rampods keep periodically going
off, as well as the catball in the master bedroom doorway, but
none of the other catballs. Theyplace their AMF on the first bench in
the theater and it quickly starts tospike up to orange periodically. Amanda busts
(01:12:41):
out of flashlights, put the doorwayacross in the master bedroom, and they
also put down the music box.The flashlight turns on or off per their
request for a bit, as wellas the rampod in the bedroom. They're
not very good at this point atlike communicating. They just kind of keep
saying, if you're here, touchthat, if you're here to do that,
if you're here to do this,if you're here to do that.
So there's not like a whole lotof intelligent type of communication. Happening,
(01:13:02):
which is why it's just kind oflike a oh, this one starts going
off and this one starts going off, going off. They're just asking for
signs of a presence and their devicesare going off, just confirming that there's
something there, or the devices arejust going off while they're they're talking with
their guide or whatever, and thenimmediately responding when they ask them to stop.
So that's kind of what the dynamicseems to be is what's strange.
(01:13:26):
So it's like, it's interesting thestuff that they're getting, but it's not
if that makes sense. It's interestingto see, but not to explain,
right. Mackie asks Amanda how shefeels about putting the boo Buddy in the
nursery. I want a boo Buddy, and immediately the master bedroom rampod starts
going off and the music box goesoff for the first time since they put
it down. Yep. They finallystart talking about going downstairs that Mackie feels
(01:13:47):
someone put their hand on her side, almost like a child running up to
their mother because they want the boobuddy. They pick up like a baby
giggle or whimper as they're walking downstairsas well. In the parlor just outside
the legacy room, they hear likea jingle, kind of like a dog
collar a couple of times, andnot long after they're talking about the child
(01:14:09):
spirits that Amanda has been seeing aroundthe house, Banjo mentions that he's suddenly
started feeling incredibly uncomfortable and like hecan't be alone. So they all decided
to step outside for a breather.Tound familiar, sound, familiar, so
they do. If they go outsideand they spend a little time outside in
the parlor, they get whiffs ofa sense they can only describe as man
(01:14:32):
for us, and then they getsome rampod activity and one of the cat
balls going off. When Amanda jokesthat she's a lawyer, they pick up
a couple of thuds in the houseas well. They also pick up maybe
like a faint woman's chuckle or whimper. While trying to communicate with anything in
the parlor, they hear a thudand then the camera loses focus for a
decent period of time. Out ofnowhere, the rempod behind Amanda starts going
(01:14:56):
off, and she says she can'tturn around, but she doesn't feel like
gets Yankee Jim that's there, butone of the other criminals. Up to
this point, the flashlight Mackie setup in front of herself had been flickering
but not going off completely until afterBanjo mentions the name Juan Verdugo. They
talk with something that keeps responding toYankee Jim with the flashlight in front of
(01:15:18):
Amanda and the parlor, and evenhear something to describe as spurs, which
you can hear. When they decidedthey're going to venture into the courtroom,
the rumpods in the dining room andparlor both start going off at the exact
same time, and Mackie comments thatmaybe that's what's happening, is that something
is trying to warn them to stayout of the courtroom. Amanda asks whatever
(01:15:40):
is there to make them stop ifwhatever is in the courtroom is bad,
and they go silent soon after, but they decide to go inside anyway.
They immediately feel pressure in their headswhen they enter, and Amanda feels a
hair get pulled out of the backof her head. Mackie asks Amanda how
she's feeling in that room, andshe says she's feeling terrified and sick.
Then they or like a chair gettingmoved, and a disembodied male voice say
(01:16:02):
let's go. They leave to graba rampod, and as they're exiting the
courtroom, you can hear a fainthey. And then while they're in the
parlor grabbing the rampod, Mackie seesthe flashlight on the judges bench slowly go
out, so now it's just pitchblack. Amanda calls out, if there's
something in the courtroom, turn theflashlight back on, and it immediately turns
back on. The flashlight continues togo on and off, and they hear
(01:16:26):
a dragging noise and a tapping whileAmanda is stating that they are all protected
by God and nothing may touch them. It's like challenge sein. A fun
thing to note is that while theywell, I don't know how fun it
is for the spirits when they wentout to grab that rampod, that they
asked again, like, can youmake these go off if you're warning us
or if you don't want us togo back in there? And nothing happens.
I think it's Mackie who comments thatthe feelings you got from that silence
(01:16:49):
was more like a lea didn't listento us the first time, so why
would we do it again? Imean, yeah, respect the spirits,
right, Like, if they're tellingyou don't go in there, you probably
shouldn't. They finally decide to doa spirit box session in the courtroom.
When they ask if anyone's there withthem, yep comes through. Mackie asks
for their name and they get Myname's Jim and possibly I'm Thomas. When
(01:17:13):
asked again, then they hear likea hiss and stop it now, suicide,
I hate you, and police justall come out without any prompting.
What fuck? Amanda asks if Jimis there and you can hear I'm here,
they hung me, please and don'tkill me. Before they turned it
off because they were feeling weird. They describe the feeling as being like a
(01:17:33):
fever where they have chills but feelincredibly hot at the same time. Interesting.
One of the last significant things theydo is Amanda asks if there's a
portal in the courtroom, and theflashlight and a nearby cat ball both turn
on simultaneously just as they're about toleave. Mackie comments that she feels a
stinging on her back, but there'sno scratches when Amanda looks. However,
while Amanda is looking, Mackie feelslike a hand get placed on her back,
(01:17:57):
and then they hear a spur soundout towards the gym Earl store.
As they're walking out, they getthe scent of lemon interesting. And finally
we have Phase Rug aka Brian, who visited and posted his video in August
of this year, and is joinedby Jokie, whom we were first introduced
to back in Ghost Adventures, andSam, a gentleman that we have had
the pleasure of becoming acquainted with. When we visit Sam's Green, the two
(01:18:20):
guys take time to briefly explain someof the history of the house as well
as the equipment they have available tothem to use, which is pretty standard
of how these investigations go these days. Also, like the way they do
the history and the way they dothe investigation in this video is all kind
of like a mixed together, whichmakes explaining it kind of odd. Sam
(01:18:41):
shows them how to use the dowsingrods by asking the question is there somebody
in this room? And when hetakes his thumbs off the rods, they
immediately cross, indicating yes, thisis in the courtroom. Before leaving the
courtroom, Brian asks if he canplace the rampod in the chair believed to
experience the most activity within the jurybox, and shortly after he placed is
it. The green light goes offbriefly and then the temperature sensor starts going
(01:19:02):
off. Next, they place therampod on Thomas Whaley's desk and it starts
going off when they turn off thecamera. They catch the tail end of
it when they turn the camera onagain. Because spirits don't like being filmed,
they're shy sometimes. After placing therampod on one of the benches in
the theater, it immediately starts goingoff, so they all move away from
it to make sure it's clear thatnone of them are setting it off.
(01:19:25):
After a moment of everyone leaving,it stops, so Brian asks if someone
is there to make it go offagain, and it reacts immediately. While
they're preparing to start a spirit boxsession, the rampod is silent, and
right before they set up the SBeleven, they get one word go from
the spirit box while the rampod continuesto get random activity. They decide to
move the rampod to Anna Whales rockingchair in the nursery, so they can
(01:19:45):
communicate with whatever is in the theaterthrough the spirit box, because they believe
the spirit is maybe choosing one orthe other to communicate through. Just before
they start the spirit box up again, the rampod and the nursery starts going
off again. When Brian asks whatis there? Just like the MF to
Orange, it does shortly after, and then they start randomly getting some weird
melodic beeps from the sp eleven withoutany sort of verbal response, which is
(01:20:09):
highly unusual melotting beeps. Yeah yeah. They hear a bang downstairs and decide
to head down there to the parlorwhere they place the rampod on the couch
in the spot where Violet died.Brian places his four catballs in front of
the couch. I believe this isthe first time Sam ever saw these things
as legit ghost hunting items, becausenow their standard equipment. For him,
there's like more every time, yep, everything is multiplying. He's like,
(01:20:31):
no, I have twenty two.Congratulations, I have twenty two, and
one of the ball starts going offand it's the only one that goes off,
so like they move it away, they move into the ball in its
place. Nothing happens. Even whenthe ball is moved away, it's not
going off anymore. When they putit back in its place, it's not
going off. So it was justlike in that moment, the clock and
the parlor starts going off something ithas never done, because it is an
(01:20:56):
artifact that does not work. Yeah, it doesn't tick nothing, it it's
just there sits. Brian and Samsay they heard a whisper or growl or
something, and then the rampod, which was moved back into the courtroom,
goes off a few times as well. Before the group makes their way into
the dining room, Brian comments onhow cold the room feels. Remember it's
August when they're here. Yeah, and it should be hot because in San
(01:21:18):
Diego, August and September are fuckinghot. And there's no there's not really
like ac in this place. Ibet that they kept the doors, the
doors and windows close to keep outnoise pollution, so it gets hot and
yep. The cat balls are placedon the dining room table and one starts
going off. As Joki is talkingabout the Whaley's granddaughter Marion, one of
(01:21:38):
the guys swears he saw a handunder the dining room table, so they
place the music box under the tableand it goes off continuously, so instead
of just doing its calibration thing,it never stops. When they turn it
to face elsewhere, it stops andone of the cat balls starts going off.
They recalibrate the music box and itstops going off under the table,
but the rempod in the courtroom startsgoing off, so they comment on it
(01:21:59):
feeling like little kid playing a gamewith them. Yeah. They decide to
end the video by doing the SISmethod in the parlor. The RAM pod
on the couch starts going off whilethey're setting up, and when Brian puts
on the headphones to begin the STIsmethod, he comments that it doesn't sound
like it's supposed to, so it'snot doing the cycling channels thing like it's
supposed to. While Sam is checkingit out, both the clock and the
(01:22:19):
REM pod start going off again. They discuss how weird everything is, and
the temperature sensor on the SB elevenstarts going off at a plus two,
so it's raising the temperature. Theydecide to try the spirit box again,
just out loud for everyone to hearin Both Sam and Joki say they hear
a woman's voice say help me whenBrian asks if Violet is in the room,
(01:22:41):
and the rem pod starts going off. So in terms of the temperature
thing, it's interesting that in allthe instances where the temperature change, they
would raise the temperature. I wonderwhy that's what the temperature should go down.
Yeah, it's got to be.They also hear the word death,
followed by go back when Brian asksif they should leave, and then growls
(01:23:04):
come through the speaker. So withthat they all hastily exit the house.
Good respect them, they say,get out, you get out. Lastly,
I will leave this bit of WhaleyHouse horror by mentioning that there is
a movie called The Haunting of WhaleyHouse that claims to be based on true
events. You're more than welcome tocheck it out if you want to.
