(00:08):
You need to go on mine with him, girl.
Real dog is how to what's good word.
It's not My Brother's Keepers Podcast, a true crime podcast
about black dudes who killed in Today's episode is about a man
by the name of Byron Black. Byron.

(00:35):
Byron, let me say something.

(00:57):
The chick cutting up like that, I don't know what to tell you,
though. If a chick is cutting up like
that, I don't know what to tell you, gang.
But anyway, what happened? Now we're heading to Tennessee.
Yeah. Your boy name?
A man named Benny Clay has just married the woman of his life,

(01:26):
right? And now she is the now she is
named Angela Clay, right? And they just started a family
gang. Yeah, two daughters, Latoya and
Lakeisha, 2 babies, right? But you know, when these the,

(01:48):
the, the, the marriage, they have ups and downs.
And I know I listen to know whatI'm talking about because half
them is the divorced their faultlately.
But anyway, yeah, so they they they they get a divorce right

(02:09):
when I yeah, get a divorce rightnow, they separate attribute.
They separate it right. And she starts dating a guy
named Byron Black right now. Byron Black he he, he wants to,
he, he don't want Benny in the pitch at all.

(02:30):
He like, no, this is my, this isthis my family now he's my kids
now. That's the type of shitty yarn
right now. Byron Black, Byron Black, he
don't want Benny around at all. And I'm like, bra, like, why
not? Bro?
This ain't got nothing to do with you, right?
It ain't got nothing to do with you.

(02:51):
So eventually, you know, it comes to it comes to Benny, it
get back to Benny. And I'm pretty sure that was
cause Angela asked that God damnher.
Byron don't like you, bro. And he'd appreciate if you stop
coming around so much while he, while we dating now he's still

(03:13):
coming around. He like these my kids, we will
be separated and shit, but thesemy kids, I'm still gonna be
there. I'm still gonna come around.
Whatever, right. But one day, one day Byron and
Clay have finally ran across each other.
And all that small talk that Byron been talking Benny like

(03:35):
man was happening, was happening.
Partner. This is December of 1986.
Yeah, they got into a man. *** start fighting man.
And Benny was apparently was getting the best of Byron.
Byron. And pulled out the old gun,
right. And with the busting shots at

(03:56):
Benny, he didn't shot Benny in the shoulder.
Right? Now, your boy, after he shot
Benny in the shoulder, he ain't leave now.
Angela, she's running around screaming.
Holland. She even called the ambulance.
My husband shot this. Damn.
You know, they don't rush this *** to the hospital and they
don't threw your boy. They don't threw your boy,
Byron. Ass in cuffs.

(04:19):
Yeah, they have put Byron's ass in custody.
He has been arrested for assaultwith a deadly weapon, right.
So of course, being to say, man,I want, I want, I want this ***
charged to the furthest extent of the law, lock his black ass
up. And that's guess what they did,

(04:41):
right? He ended going to trial.
He was going to trial but ended up pleading guilty right to the
to the to the assault daily weapon.
And he was convicted and sentenced to two years.
But they sentenced and convictedhim and they he got sentenced
right. And they gave him two years.

(05:02):
And after he was in the jail a little while, he was granted a
word release so he would be ableto leave and go to work.
But you know, the whole time that he was in jail, you know,
Angela was still on his mind. And you know why she was still
on his mind? Because the prison was only a
hop skip in a jump from where the fuck she was at.

(05:22):
Yeah, she has been driving up there talking to this ***
visiting this *** I'm sure she'sdriving up there.
She putting money on this commissary, but no conical
visits, of course, because she they're not married.
But you know, Benny's still around.
He has the kids while she go visit this fool.
And I'm cool, right. So now that he's on work lease

(05:46):
when he's out and you know, had to be in jail at the time, you
know, he'd come visit her, he'd be having her call sometime,
pick her up from work. What?
Yes, I like he did. He's doing what now, bro?
He's still in jail. That's the thing.
He's still a fucking jail. Nikki.

(06:07):
You ain't picking me up, dog. You ain't picking me up right
now. The work release, you know, he's
supposed to be at work or whatever.
Sometimes, I guess sometimes they get days off with it,
right? But you know, Angela, she, she

(06:27):
is still like, she still likes this guy, right?
But she still has feelings for her husband Benny right now.
Now Byron is mad that Benny is still in the picture.
But bro, that is her. That is her father's, her kids

(06:48):
father, right? And not only that, not only
that, she doesn't told Byron, hey, I don't think it's gonna
work. I'm go back to my husband.
I need that in my life. I need some stability.

(07:08):
I don't want to be driving up tothis jail cell is seeing you no
more. So of course he sits there like
OK, cool, I get the picture. You don't want to you don't want
a real man you want you want this man what right.

(07:30):
So anyway, so anyway, on March 28th, he of course had been
furloughed or the rights would be at work, right?
And she eventually tells him, hey, I don't want to be with
you, whatever right? And he kind of played it cool

(07:52):
and shit right? Because of course he played at
school cool right? Because he he picked her up from
work after she told him this in her car.
Which makes no sense, bro, makesno sense to me, right?

(08:14):
But anyway, I'm going to assume that homeboy got his gun while
she was at work because it was never stated.
But anyway, they are back at thecrib.

(08:34):
He's they all over back at the crib, right?
She has went there and took her nap.
So has Keisha and Latoya. I mean, Keisha and Keisha and
Latoya. Yeah, they all sleep too, right.
So your boy is mad about the impending breakup.

(08:59):
She's told him. Me.
It it, it it ain't even look like we ain't doing this shit
game. We ain't doing this shit right.
So they asleep, right? And you know, he walks up, he
gets up, boom, walks through thethe master bedroom where Angela

(09:23):
is sleeping. Wow.
Shoots her right in the head. She never saw it coming, right?
And at this point, after he shoots her in the head, after he

(09:45):
shoots her in the head, he shoots Latoya, who raises up.
She raises up and screams. Bah shoots her once in the neck,
Bah once in the check, I mean the chest.
And she dies right there by her mother.

(10:05):
Now he's going to go find Keisha.
Keisha is in the other room. He opens the door, calls her
name. She raises up.
He puts the gun on her. She starts moving.
Bow shoots her in hip. Now she is screaming and he

(10:27):
walks up close to her. She puts her hands up.
Bow shoots her in her hand. Into her chest, Yeah.
She was 8 years old. I mean not 8.

(10:52):
Yeah. He shot through her hand into a
chest and he leaves. He leaves, right?
And he goes back to, I guess thehalfway house right now, them
family members have been callingLatoya because they have not

(11:13):
heard from her. They have not heard from her
since the day before after she she had told him that she was
getting ready to cut this *** loose.
Now state they, they know that she, she's already told her
family that she's going to cut this *** loose.
Like ain't nothing here. I'm gonna just go back, right.
And they've been calling, calling, calling, calling.

(11:34):
They ain't heard from her. Now family member ended up
stopping by the house the next day, which is Monday, because
ain't nobody heard from her. Ain't nobody heard from her
nothing. I mean, ain't nobody heard from
her. Now the family tells police,
hey, man, yeah. Can we get a where for a check?
We, we, we, we, we only see a car, but we don't see her.

(11:55):
I mean, we see, we heard her knock on the door.
The police go in, they found three bodies, three bodies, and
the family was like Byron did this shit.
And they told the police immediately about Byron.

(12:18):
They told him immediately. We know who did this.
This was Byron. They said Byron got a temple he
liked to fight and he carried the gun even though he shouldn't
have gun because his ass is technically still in jail right
now. This is moving fast right?
So they go to the halfway house in question Byron of course, and

(12:42):
he didn't do and he he tell him he do it.
He love her. He doesn't have access to no gun
and they they all and he also healso informed the police that he
also informed the police that this has some shit he do What
how didn't you just shoot a husband right now?

(13:04):
At that point, your boy can't work no more.
They just like hey, now you justsit right here and kind of ride
your time out right. We just gone.
We like we we investigating the murder.
Your name should be coming up and no murder.
So right now you just gonna kindof, it's gonna hold back on your
work and you're working, right? So this case at this point, at

(13:27):
this point, Lakeisha, Latoya andAngela, they all have been
buried, right? And all of a sudden the case has
hit, hit a historic moment. And when it's about historic
moment, this is one of the firsttimes when the forensics start

(13:47):
getting used to this one. This one of the first times that
the forensics have been used on like guns and bullets because

(14:15):
somehow, so this was the first one they had went back to the
shooting and got the bullet casing when he shot Benny in the
shoulder. And they compared it 2 shit
think I mean, excuse me. And they compared it.

(14:36):
They compared it to they compared it to the the bullet
cases they found at the scene. And they said, hey, man, this is
indeed a match. This is indeed a match.
And not only it was a match, butyeah, not only is it match.
Well, of course it was a match. I mean, it's the same fucking
gun. What are the chances?
So they book your boy on on triple murder, robbery and 33

(15:07):
counts of murder and robbery. Yeah.
Oh yeah. And kidnapping.
Yeah. So they were like, oh hell no,
*** Oh hell no. So he sits in jail all year,
right? He sits in jail the rest of the
year and the trial with trial 'cause he got arrested in, he

(15:29):
got arrested in April, April 28,April 21st of 1998, right?
I mean 1988, right? He had just shot and killed them
on March 28th. So it took him about a month to
arrest his ass. But this shit they like, are we
taking this *** to trial right now?
It's February 1989 and they're taking him to trial, right?
And he said he knew it, even though his alibis were no good.

(15:56):
He claims that he saw the bodiesonce when he went over there,
but he left. And, you know, shit just wasn't
making sense. So on March 8th, just on March
8th, he was found guilty. Yeah.
Nobody believed the story. They're like, *** you usually

(16:16):
shooting people this bullet cases match.
They didn't call them any witnesses because hell nobody
saw him. But they had already, they
already going by the patterns oflike he, he likes to shoot.
He had been informed that she was leaving his ass and he can't
prove where the fuck he was at all day, right?
So he was found guilty and they gave his ass.

(16:38):
He was found guilty and they gave his ass.
They sentenced their ass to death, right?
And not all they sentencing the death.
They gave him 15 years for the robbery and 10 years for the
gun. No, no, no, no, no.
But the story don't stop their game prayer.
So not only not only did they want this *** to be executed,

(17:05):
they want his ass executed within six months.
Yeah, they want his ass out of here.
And you know what? That the six months, it's all
that *** had left on earth and he went to following appeals
like a motherfucker, right? So he started filing these

(17:26):
appeals, right? And so he finally kind of got
like a stay. So he filed appeal and he let
him stay in like a pillar, right, because they wanted him
dead in six months. But the next appeal ain't come
till 1991. It was denied.
He didn't he he he, he got denied of of of appeal A couple
years later, September 27th 1995denied.

(17:47):
He applied again for no, he appealed for some oh shit, April
19 I mean April 1999 *** claimedhe was retarded, told them that
he don't know and then adjust tohim that you ain't got to be no
genius to kill nobody denied right?
In 2005, he claimed that he was retarded once again denied 2008.

(18:13):
He sends it up to the federal tothe Supreme Court.
They rejected the appeal 2005. So it like all this, this appeal
process he's doing is like, he'sjust, he's just playing.
But he's like, he just, he's fucking with the family room
because he just denied and they denied all this shit, right?
They denied all this shit, right?
So in 2011, the Court of Appealssent his case to a smaller court

(18:36):
because they ain't got time for that shit.
They're like, Oh no, I ain't gottime for this.
And in 2013, again, this appeal was rejected.
And then just four years later, in August, another appeal he
had, he had appealed again on some other bullshit about
council miss retardation and it was dismissed.
And in June of 2018 hit the hit the once again.

(18:59):
He sent it to the Supreme Court and they rejected it.
Alright, look here man, your ass's gonna die.
We, we, we ain't got time for this, right?
But he got a break. It is COVID-19.
Oh yeah, it is COVID. And would it be in COVID they
are suspending executions, But Nah man, we can't just be, we

(19:21):
just can't be stopping executionbecause 1 *** got them.
We can't be suspending executionbecause this *** don't want to
die. Hell, he's going, his ass is
going to die anyway, right? But anyway, during this time,
his health is deteriorating. He even got, like, he even got a

(19:42):
ICDA pacemaker or defibrillator, whatever you want to call it.
He got one of them put right there in his heart, you know,
You know, I'm coming up. Yeah.
And the ICD, it stands for impact inflatable cardioverter.
Cardioverter defibrillator, right?
It detects irregular heartbeats. It it sends electric shocks when

(20:08):
you have the abnormal rhythm. And it also sets the pace for
your heart. So it's keeping this *** alive
even though he probably should be dead already.
He was supposed to be dead within six months of feeling
filed guilty right now with all that saying he was, he didn't
have to worry about nothing about getting killed or nothing

(20:30):
less. COVID going to do it for three
years, right? For three years now.
It is April now, April 21st, right?
They told her, hey bro, we're going to kill you, gang.
We tired, we tired, we tired. We tired of your ass sitting up

(20:53):
here are you? You've been appealing for almost
30 years and finally, finally they get a death day for this
*** right? Finally, yeah, finally they were
like hey *** *** we is going to kill you on March 5th.

(21:21):
I know on March 3rd, 2025, because now COVID is good and
gone, they say hey *** we killing you August 5th, 2025.
Count your days motherfucker. Right now his lawyer has
informed the judge he has a pacemaker and that they told him
it would be it needs to be deactivated so he wouldn't.

(21:44):
It will be be active they said. He said need to be deactivated
so it wouldn't have such a painful death.
It was like hey man don't worry about it, it'll be good right
now he's been on death for 37 years.
In the day his came for his ass to meet his maker.
Now you got Benny who's there who won't see this *** die.

(22:09):
You got her parents there. I mean you got Angela's mother
there and like but the crazy part, you got all these fucking
protesters out there. Hey bro, y'all saying do you?
Did you read what this *** did? It ain't no fucking alleged this
*** did this bro. What's the chances?
What's the chances of this *** shooting these people?

(22:31):
That was the chance of somebody else randomly getting the same
bullets, same gun that he shot Benny with and shooting these
three people. He knew all of them.
Come on, now. Oh, and why was it so close?
Well, you got to look at this. Your boy was in Tennessee, but
he was in Memphis. She was over there in Nashville.

(22:54):
I mean, how far is that, really? He was going back and forth,
right. And not to mention the prison he
was at with only 20 minutes fromAngela.
That's why he was going over there constantly and she was
going out there constantly, right?
So it's the day before Byron's execution, right?

(23:20):
It is May. I mean, it's August 4th, the day
before, the day before the execution, right?
And they have moved his ass to the death watch.
Which is right? Across the hall.
Of where you gonna? Be executed at and you have to
stare at this shit for your last24 fucking hours.

(23:47):
What you are literally looking death in the face.
You ever see, I don't know movies and see like me, I've
been able I'm gonna look me in the eye right before I in this
shit. Guess what he was doing.
They sent you right there. They sit you right there in
front of the motherfucker for your last 24, *** how the fuck
am I order a fucking last meal when I'm looking at this ***

(24:09):
that's gonna kill me? Right?
So August, I mean, he ended up getting his last meal.
It was on. He had pizza with a pepperoni
pizza with mushrooms, mushrooms and sausage Donuts.
Some butter became ice cream in around 2.

(24:31):
AI mean around 10:00 AM they finally moved his ass to his
final resting place. Right right now, behind the
glass you have Benny Clay, that's Angela's husband.
You have Mary Bell, which is Angela's mother.

(24:54):
Byron's. Sister who have been fighting
for him for the last 37 years. Girl yo-yo, your brother did
this shit. Your brother did this.
Shit, he's just trying to hide it, right?
He did this. I mean, there's no doubt about
it that he did it. We know he did it.
He. Come on now.

(25:17):
So they had asked Mary Bell, excuse me, before the before the
before the execution. Right now she's 88 years old.
She said she had been waiting for this a long time and she

(25:39):
wouldn't miss this shit for nothing in the world.
This *** got. To go today, right, Benny was
like, man, I was not missing this shit.
I was not missing this shit. They should have been got rid of
this *** This is what Benny and Mary are saying to the to the
newspaper. Hey, like man, he should have

(26:00):
been gone. He he ain't been normal wasting
taxpayers money for almost 40 fucking years.
Right now the whole family is talking about we're not supposed
to believe in monsters, but herewe go right here.
He's a fucking monster, right? And at 10:23 he has already been

(26:25):
laid down and strapped and aboutto be poked and injected with
the lethal injection, right? Right.
So at 1023, he's been in poked. In the stuff the the.
Stuff is going through his body right?

(26:46):
And it's about 10 minutes in andat 10:33 he yells and shakes on
the table. He said.
Oh man, this hurts really bad. Oh fuck.
This hurts, really. Bad, right?
Do you know why it hurts really bad?

(27:09):
Because. They always say that the lethal
injection is more humane. They don't feel nothing.
It's like they're here and then they're gone.
Cool. Unless you got a fucking
defibrillator on your heart thathas not been deactivated.
So remember when I said your heart starts trying to catch a

(27:33):
rhythm and it'll pace it or you think you're dying and it might
shock you? So peep this.
He's almost to to the pearly fucking gates of hell and he
gets a shot and gets up and revived and it went on and on
and on. They say he screamed and
hollered until he died. He felt pain the whole way

(27:56):
through. What bro let?
Me tell you something. Karma is a real thing, gang.
Karma is a real thing because you can't.
You can't script no shit like that.
You can't script no shit like that, bro.

(28:18):
You can't. You can't.
You can't. That's.
Just flat out karma bro. That's just flat out karma bro.
You took them people you, you killed them girls and and and
the woman you loved. Right.
And then? The other guy you tried to kill
is watching you die now. I won't tell you right now,

(28:39):
Marie. Marie and Benny probably had the
biggest grin on a face. I would.
Because he died. In pain, agony, he was
screaming. Bro this *** was.
Going through it on the other thing was going through it his
last fucking 20 minutes, he was going through it and at 10:43,

(29:07):
homeboy is dead. After that they have a press
conference, Benny and Marie said.
Hey, I'm glad that motherfucker gone.
Benny, I mean. Marie, who's 88, said I can.
I can leave in peace now. Because she said she.

(29:30):
Didn't want to die before he left this earth.
Didn't want it to. Happen.
So now she has her wish. She's 88 years old, she said.
She ain't got that many more days left when she definitely
wanted to make sure that he was in the ground first.
