Frances's story is one of unwavering determination and resilience. She tragically lost two children to gun violence, Edward Cusseaux in 1984 and Michelle Cusseaux in a horrifying police incident in 2014. Michelle, who battled mental health issues after the murder of her brother, was fatally shot by law enforcement.
Frances has turned her anguish into a powerful call for change, dedicating herself to reforming laws and raising awareness. Her relentless efforts were instrumental in igniting the #SAYHERNAME movement, shining a spotlight on the stories of Black women affected by police violence.

Frances's advocacy also led to the establishment of a 24/7 mental health intervention task force within the Phoenix Police Department. Her vision is for similar task forces nationwide to ensure compassionate responses to mental health crises.
Despite her tireless efforts, justice remains elusive. The officer responsible for Michelle's death received minimal punishment, underscoring the urgent need for criminal justice reform.
Notably, Janelle Monáe, Teyana Taylor, and Beyoncé have used their platforms to elevate Michelle's memory and demand justice. Beyoncé even displayed a wall with names of people killed by the police during her Formation Tour.
Every year, Michelle’s family organizes a Christmas Toy Drive in her honor, where you can contribute to their cause.
