In the lecture, the student will be introduced to the EMS system and how it evolved from a “White Paper” back in 1966. The student should have a fundamental understanding of the various certification levels of the EMS program, the 14 components of the EMS system, the science behind quality and assurance and the role the EMT plays as well as patient privacy concern as outlined by HIPPA. 

Knowledge Domains: 

  • The student should be able to define the emergency medical services system. 
  • The student should be able to name the four levels of EMT training and the skills associated with each level. 
  • The EMT should have a fundamental understanding of the historical background of how the EMS system came to be. 
  • The EMT student should know the 14 components of the EMS system. 
  • The EMT student should understand medical direction and the EMT's role. 
  • The EMT should have a fundamental knowledge of the mobile integrated health (MIH) care and community paramedicine program. 
  • The empty should be able to discuss the purpose of the quality improvement process of EMS. 
  • The EMT should understand how EMS plays a role in public education regarding disease and injury prevention. 
  • EMT should understand their roles and responsibilities and the attributes that an EMT is expected to possess. 
  • The EMT should understand how the health insurance portability and accountability act FX patient privacy.
