(03:19):
formerly known as Twitter, formerly known as Twitter.
Today, our main theme is howquackery can kill you, with
fascinating reviews of how oneso-called Dr Miracle promised a
cure for HIV-positive and AIDSpatients, plus a wannabe doctor

(03:40):
that created a cult-like retreatin Valley Center, california,
where he treated patients for avariety of disorders and
illnesses with intravenoustreatments made of quote natural
substances.
The latter, by the way, ispartly told by a woman who chose

(04:00):
quackery over traditionalmedicine and is now living as a
stage 4 cancer patient.
So why am I covering medicalmisdeeds?
I embrace herbal therapies as afirst line of defense for
run-of-the-mill infections,earaches, toothaches, headaches,

(04:21):
nausea and similar maladies formany years, but anytime my
symptoms are more severe or myherbal therapies aren't
immediately improving my healthsituation, I don't hesitate to
seek medical help, which Iconsider to be a second and
stronger line of defense.

(04:42):
I think the key for everyone, especially those like myself who
tend towards natural remedieswhenever possible, is to realize
that when you need help, youneed to trust the medical
process.
One of the greatest dangers forthose who don't trust the
medical system is beingsusceptible to fake gurus, who

(05:05):
are usually charismatic and knowhow to lead certain people down
an alternative and sometimesdangerous path.
The actions committed by thesedishonest self-proclaimed
experts were egregious, and thegullibility of their quote
patients made them perfectvictims for their scams.

(05:27):
I'm also covering lightertopics, so not everything will
be terribly serious For thecurious.
For instance, I'm going to betalking about Mr Ballin's
medical mysteries, as well assome fresh tea on Dance Moms,
the reality TV show, and whyAbby Lee Miller went to prison.

(05:50):
We are going to jump into ourprogram in just one minute, but

manage human waste.

by the way, is easy to do whenyou consider that there are over
350,000 active podcastersproducing shows.

(07:39):
Welcome to our news, updatesand highlights segment.

(08:08):
The Hysterical Podcast by RealmStudio has begun dropping its
12th season with a show calledthe Understudy.
It's a story about intrigue andnefarious activities that often
happen among theater casts andtheir supporting others, which,
in this case, are stage mothers, who are at the heart of

(08:32):
widespread jealousy and highlycharged emotions.
What could go wrong?
When I was a young adult, Ibelonged to a theater group, and
nothing in this story is toooutlandish or exaggerated.
I have so many memories fromlong ago that are whirling

(08:52):
through my mind right now, andbecause I don't really want to
mark this episode explicit, I'mjust going to keep talking about
the Adrenaline Podcast and theshow at hand.
The understudy is about how farmothers will go to not only
protect their children, but toalso make sure that they get the

(09:14):
parts that they so richlydeserve.
Stage mothers Carolyn, bronnie, elise and Kendall are bound
together by one thing their fourdaughters are best friends at
the highly competitive OrlaFlynn Academy for the Performing
Arts in London.

(09:34):
And wouldn't you know it?
There's also a backstory.
The mothers had an explosiveargument, but they've since
forgiven each other, realizingthat the four of them together
are much stronger than each ofthem alone.
Did the mothers really move on?

(09:54):
Well, that's hard to say, butwhen new threats surface and
accidents begin to happen, notto mention a mysterious new girl
who suddenly enters the sceneand becomes a lead understudy.
The mothers decide they musttake matters into their own
hands, and even though all theepisodes haven't dropped yet, I

(10:18):
am still anticipating a wildride as an FYI.
Realm Studios produces a lot ofdifferent podcasts in several
genres, including horror andsupernatural podcasts like
Harrowing, true crime likeRotten, thrillers like the

(10:38):
Pirate of Prague anddocumentaries like Noble and the
Inconceivable Truth.
They also do something that isunique.
As far as I know, I have notseen this before.
After several of their greatestpodcasts in a single genre have
had solo runs as standalonepodcasts, realm sometimes

(11:00):
bundles them under one roof or,in this case, very
genre-specific podcasts likeAdrenaline and then releases
these successful shows asseasons.
Here's a clip that explains alittle bit more about that
format.

Speaker 4 (11:18):
You know that moment when you realize that danger is
right around the corner.
Maybe you feel it on the backof your neck, those little hairs
that stick up.
Maybe the palms of your handsare hot and itchy at the same
time, or your heart is beatingso fast it's like a hum.
Well, I love that feeling, andI'm pretty sure that you do too.

(11:39):
So I would like to welcome youto Adrenaline.
I'm your host, neil Heligers, and I am thrilled to be joining
you on this adventure.
Adrenaline is a curatedcollection of Rome's most
riveting thrillers, meant tobring you to the edge of your
seat, like right on the pointthere, and keep you there like

(12:00):
forever.
So whether you're a seasonedtraveler of the Realm universe,
or maybe this is the first timeyou've heard of us, you're bound
to get caught up in thesuspense and the excitement of
Adrenaline.
Each season is the start of abrand new story, so you can feel
free to start wherever you like.
But just fair warning once youstart, you're not going to be

(12:22):
able to stop, but that's bydesign.
So get ready to embark on ajourney of adrenaline.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
If you would like to know more about my reviews with
the Adrenaline Series.
In episode 24, I reviewedGreetings from Salton Sea.
It's a great podcast.
C it's a great podcast.
And in episode 26, I reviewedEcho Park.

(12:52):
My last highlight for thisepisode is Mr Ballin's Medical
Mysteries.
Despite being around for lessthan two years, this podcast is
welllished in its genre andregularly ranks extremely high
on all of the podcast charts.
Although many listeners find thetopics of weird and mysterious

(13:13):
medical conditions intriguing, Ithink that the show's
popularity is also due to hostand storyteller Jonathan Allen's
ability to draw listeners intoeach episode by sharing
fascinating facts, compellingsituations and by humanizing the
people at the center of thesedilemmas.

(13:34):
I've also found that Mr Bowen'sMedical Mysteries has a way of
bringing forth our empathy andquite often making us feel
thankful that nothing thathappened to the people in his
stories is likely to happen tous or those we love.
Here's the trailer from theshow.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
Imagine waking up and hearing voices around you.
They say you're in a coma.
You try to tell them they'rewrong, but you can't move or
speak.
That's when you realize you'relocked inside of your own body.
Or what if you walked outsideand your entire hometown was
going insane?
You see people hallucinatingand jumping out of windows, but

(14:25):
no one can figure out why.
Or maybe you're feeling ahorrible pain in your stomach.
Doctors think it's a tumor andthey operate, but what they find
is so much worse.
What would you do if you foundyourself at the center of a
terrifying medical mystery, whenthe best doctors and scientists

(14:45):
in the world don't have answersand you're running out of time?

Speaker 2 (14:53):
Jonathan Allen is also two for two when it comes
to podcasts.
In 2022, he launched MrBallin's Strange, dark and
Mysterious, and in 2023, helaunched Mr Ballin's Medical
Mysteries.

(15:13):
Both of them are ranked veryhigh on the charts.
Just as a backstory, jonathanwent from being a Navy SEAL to
an incredible storyteller.
Gerald, oh, no, not you again, what are?

(15:50):
you listening to?
Are you spying on me?
What are you listening to?
Are you spying on me?
Ah, ais, you can't trust them.
But, yes, welcome to what?
Are you Listening To?
A segment where I share whatI've binged this week.

(16:15):
Were you a fan of Dance Moms?
You know the television showabout a dance instructor named
Abby Lee Miller and the youngstudents that she verbally
pummeled and punished with herinfamous pyramid and who placed
her students dead last if shewas mad at their moms that week.
The mothers were ideal stagemoms, whether their kids were in
the dance studio or performingin numerous dance contests.

(16:38):
It was so cringeworthy thatmost of us couldn't miss a
single episode.
We're going.
Oh my God, what is she going todo this week?
Loud, crude and beyondunpleasant.
That's being nice.
Abby Lee reigned supreme on thedance circuit for several years
until things started goingterribly wrong.

(17:00):
After years of being on thereceiving end of Abby's abuse,
the ever-present dance moms andtheir anger began to surpass
their need for their children tobe reality television and dance
stars.
Television and dance stars Afew dropped out.

(17:23):
You know make that stormed out.
And just when things couldn'tget any worse, abby was in legal
hot water and, as we graduallyrealized, was doomed to become a
guest of the federal prisonsystem.
I will tell you, there areseveral podcasts about Abby Lee
and the Dance Moms, but I findthat one stands above the rest

(17:45):
and that is Scamfluencers byWondery and hosts Saatchi Kuhl
and Sarah Hagee, episode 120,and the title is Abby Lee Miller
Scam.
Like Nobody's Watching, becausethe clip was so long I had to
trim it a bit.
You're going to notice that thehost mentions Brian.

(18:08):
Who's Brian?
Brian is the producer of theshow and he was responsible for
casting the kids, abby Lee and,of course, the dance moms.

Speaker 5 (18:21):
Abby walks up to her studio and finds a note from the
sheriff's office taped to herdoor.
It's a sales notice.
The studio is about to be soldout from under her and she has
no way to pay the bank what sheowes them.
So, at 45 years old, abby filesfor Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Chapter 11 helps people createa plan to repay creditors while
still keeping their businessopen.

(18:41):
It's a really tedious processthat can take years, but it
seems like this is her onlyoption.
But soon Abby will find anotherway to bail herself out of her
financial troubles.
All she has to do is step outsomewhere.
She never thought she'd becenter stage.
Initially Abby is supposed toplay a small part on the show,
but that all changes once thecameras start rolling.

(19:03):
The mom, who also happens to bea minister, is pissed that Abby
just kicked her kid out ofclass.
She starts yelling at Abby andso Abby calls the police.
When the police ask if thewoman has a weapon, abby says
just her mouth.
I mean, come on, best to everdo it.
It's perfect television, Ican't even fight it.

(19:24):
But Ryan doesn't realize howmuch Abby needs this show.
He doesn't even consider thatshe might be amplifying the
drama out of desperation.
He just knows that she's madefor reality TV, and his decision
to put her in the spotlightchanges Abby's life forever.
It's only been four monthssince Abby declared bankruptcy,
and while most people in hersituation would be struggling,

(19:46):
abby is now the lead on a TVseries.
She'll make around $8,500 amonth, but she'll also be
expected to turn most of thatover to the court to pay back
her creditors.
The timing is terrible.
If only she could have gottenthe TV show before she filed for
bankruptcy.
So she decides to take a riskand hide some of her new income.

(20:06):
Abby's looking out for numberone, but that decision will end
up costing her more than shecould ever imagine.
The pilot episode of Dance Momsdebuts on Lifetime in July 2011,
.
Just seven months into Abby'sbankruptcy filing, she's
introduced to the world as thetyrant ruler of her dance empire

(20:27):
, an empire that includes sixyoung dancers sitting
cross-legged in the middle ofher studio floor.
One of the girls iseight-year-old Maddie Ziegler.
Maddie has long brown hairpulled up into a tight ponytail,
larger than life, blue eyes andtwo buck teeth that make her
look that much more adorable.
Maddie looks up at the danceteacher looming above her.

(20:47):
Abby's in front of a chalkboardand she tells the girls that
they're here because they arethe cream of the crop in the 8
to 12 age group.
But that doesn't make themequals.
Abby swivels the chalkboardaround, revealing headshots of
all the girls taped in the shapeof a pyramid.
She's ranked her dancers andMaddie's picture is at the very
top.
By Abby's high standards, maddie is the best of them all.

(21:11):
If you haven't seen Dance Moms, this triangle with Maddie's
picture on top is Abby'sinfamous pyramid.
Abby publicly ranks her dancersat the start of each episode.
The rankings change from weekto week depending on how well
each girl does in the previousweek's competition and on how
Abby feels about their moms.
If a mom somehow pisses her off, their child gets a lower place

(21:33):
on the pyramid.
Well, abby teaches the girlsnew routines for countless
competitions they attendthroughout the season and as a
teacher she is a total nightmare.
She's harsh and abrasive.
She yells at the girls andcalls it tough love.

Speaker 6 (21:48):
I want to be Vince Lombardi and I want to pump
y'all up and tell you you'regoing to go out there and win,
but sometimes your best isn'tgood enough anymore.
Ding dong, look, grow up.
She's going to go, she's goingto do the solo, it's going to be
good and we're all going tohave fun.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
To be honest, I always thought it was scripted
like.
This is the drama that we'regoing to create today, but
apparently a lot of it wasspontaneous on Abby's part and
the reactions from the moms.
And then there was the abuse ofthe children, both by Abby Lee
and their mothers.

(22:23):
I can't believe that.
I'm even confessing that Iwatched Dance Moms and I feel
like I have to say your Honor, Iam guilty as charged, but if
you're a Dance Mom fan, youdon't have to admit it in public
like I'm doing.
Just go check out the episodeScamfluencers, episode 120.

(22:45):
And now it's time for our mainreviews.

(23:08):
Today I am reviewing twopodcasts that feature con men
posing as physicians and theabsolute havoc that they wreaked
on people's lives.
It's no secret that people fallfor scams every day, whether
it's buying a cashmere sweaterwith a $300 price tag for just

(23:31):
10 bucks, to buying anexorbitant supplement
subscription and we've all seenthis that promises to give them
a full day's worth of vegetablesin one tiny capsule, so they'll
never have to eat broccoliagain.
Scammers have been around foras long as mankind has walked

(23:51):
this earth.
Sure, their tricks have evolvedto keep up with the times, but
the motivations behind theirmethods have not Fear-mongering,
fear of missing out, desperation, unhappiness and
distrust in authority, includingthe government and medicine.

(24:12):
People want to believe faketestimonials and claims that a
single product can cure a widerange of diseases because of its
magical gobbledygook ingredient.
Once their interest is piqued, scammers move in for the kill by
pressuring people to sign upquickly before this amazing

(24:32):
once-in-a-lifetime offerdisappears for good.
Now, before you judge peopleinvolved in being scammed, be
honest with yourself.
Haven't we all fallen for ascam at least once in our life,
Whether it was buying somethingon a late-night infomercial or
trusting an ad on Facebook?

(24:53):
Because, after all, MarkZuckerberg wouldn't allow
disinformation of any kind thatwould dupe his members, right?
Hmm, it happens every day, andif you claim that you have never
been scammed, then you have notwalked on this earth longer
than a day.
With that thought in mind, bekind to the people who were

(25:16):
duped here.
They were desperate, they weresick, they were distrustful and
they found somebody who talkedtheir language, almost read
their minds.
The first show that I am goingto cover today about medical
quackery is Dr Miracle, theeighth season of a podcast
called Chameleon.

(25:37):
A wellness center named MiracleRanch and Nestled in the scenic
hills of Southern Californiapromised a luxurious escape and
a path to wellness through clean, alkaline living.
Its leader, Dr Robert OldmanYoung, attracted wealthy clients

(25:57):
with his quote groundbreakinghealth protocols and friendly
family man persona.
And friendly family man persona.
But beneath the serene surface,Miracle Ranch harbored many
dark secrets.
People who stayed there didn'tget better.
In fact, they got worse.
Through legal documents andinterviews with former patients

(26:20):
and employees, law enforcementofficials and family members of
those who died and cannot standup for themselves, this series
unravels the chilling true storyof one man who convinced scores
of people are you sitting down?
That cancer wasn't a cell, itwas an acidic, poisonous liquid

(26:44):
and the only way to rid yourbody of cancer was to go on an
alkaline diet.
Yes, folks, Dr Robert OldmanYoung invented the alkaline diet
, and cancer patients and otherpeople who are seriously ill
still use as part of theirregimen in the hopes it will
help either cure their cancer orat least stop it from growing

(27:08):
so quickly.
I can say that firsthand becauseI help cancer patients.
I help raise money for them.
I'm not an organization, I'mjust an individual.
But when somebody comes to meand they're out of hope and
they're out of money and they'reout of luck, I use my influence
on social media to raise fundsfor them so that they can at

(27:30):
least have a better quality oflife.
If nothing else, I have neverhelped one person that didn't
adhere to alkaline substances, alkaline foods and alkaline
water.
I don't blame them, it's noharm, no foul.
But this is the far-reachingeffects of one con man who
purported that alkalinesubstances would cure cancer.

(27:53):
The voice you're about to hearis Laura Beale.
She is the journalist whoinvestigated Dr Miracle.

Speaker 7 (28:03):
Let me take you back to a time before Gwyneth Paltrow
hawked bone broth and jade eggs, back to the mid-2000s, when
exercise classes were on DVD,when people followed the Atkins
diet or the South Beach diet tolose weight, and there was
another one that was really bigback then, a miracle diet that

(28:24):
would not only slim your waistbut make your body reject
diseases.

Speaker 6 (28:30):
Back to the garden, back to the greens, back to
God's butter avocado.

Speaker 7 (28:34):
It was called the alkaline diet, and tons of
celebrities toyed with it KateHudson, victoria Beckham, kelly
Ripa, even the Queen of Goop, gwyneth herself.
It involved drinking lots ofgreen juice and not very much
else.

Speaker 6 (28:51):
I dropped weight like crazy, but I wasn't dropping
weight, where I look haggardlike people do when they're on a
diet Right.

Speaker 7 (28:59):
The alkaline lifestyle was pioneered by Dr
Robert Young.

Speaker 3 (29:03):
Breakfast should start out with a fresh juice.

Speaker 7 (29:07):
But Robert Young didn't just promise weight loss,
he promised hope.
He promised a miracle cure.
Sick people, especially cancerpatients, desperate for that
hope, flocked to Dr Young.

Speaker 6 (29:22):
He called it the new biology.
He had a way of making you feelspecial and like you were on
this great crusade.
He just convinced her stay thecourse, follow my protocol.
It works.

Speaker 7 (29:36):
I've cured cancer.
Like she was desperate, shewanted to feel better.
Robert Young's followers calledthemselves Alcalarians.

Speaker 6 (29:44):
I just felt like a father feeling towards him and
Jesus Christ.
That's pretty powerful.

Speaker 7 (29:50):
They followed his protocol, even when it made them
feel sicker.

Speaker 1 (29:54):
Her stomach was so distended and I begged and
pleaded with her to stop doingwhat she was doing.

Speaker 7 (29:59):
And when patients' illnesses got worse, Robert
Young convinced them they wereactually getting better.

Speaker 4 (30:07):
She had a lump on her chest.

Speaker 5 (30:09):
It was the size of a golf ball and it was coming out
kind of like supporting what hewas saying, that it can't live
in her body.

Speaker 7 (30:17):
Dr Miracle isn't just about a diet.
It's about what happens whenyou follow the wrong guru.
It's about how we choose totreat our illnesses at a time
when health care is unaffordableand so many people doubt
science.
And it's about the search fortruth when everything goes

(30:38):
horribly awry.

Speaker 4 (30:41):
A good con man is an abrasive.
He's a likable guy.
He's telling them what theywant to hear and he's saying it
with conviction.

Speaker 2 (30:51):
There are losers, there are people that owe us
money.

Speaker 6 (30:53):
My mom's sucking on that bottle of greens and I took
it and I fucking threw it atthat woman and then I said
here's your check.

Speaker 2 (31:05):
Give me my mother.
Everyone's dying.
Why is everyone dying?
I want to add that, first ofall, dr Robert Oldman Young is
not a doctor at all.
It was part of his scam andeven today his books are still
selling, which makes him anexcellent customer of the
commissaries, because he is nowin prison.

(31:28):
My last medical quackery reviewtoday is by Dr Death.
Dr Death now has four seasonsand Bad Magic is season number
four.
The other three seasons are nowbehind a paywall, so if you

(31:49):
want to listen to everythingthat Dr Death has, you'll need
to subscribe to Wondery.

Speaker 6 (32:04):
Imagine your kid is sick, very sick.
You see the doctors.
You go through the tests, talkto all the specialists.
Everyone tells you the samething We've done all we can.

Speaker 1 (32:18):
They've pretty much come to the end of the line of
what medicine could offer them.

Speaker 6 (32:23):
But you're a parent.
You can't give up.
You'll do anything, even forjust a glimmer of hope.
And then you find him.

Speaker 1 (32:33):
Dr Sirhad has the type of brilliance that has the
capacity to see acrossdiscipline in science and
connect things that others don'tsee.
He's a researcher.
Scientists, doctors, renownedexperts were saying genius,
genius, genius.
A healer.
People that knew him wereconvinced that he saved their

(32:54):
life and a suspected murderer webelieve that he died from
multiple gunshot wounds to thehead and torso.

Speaker 6 (33:07):
Many put their hope in Dr Serhat.
His company was worth half abillion dollars.
His research promisedgroundbreaking treatments for
HIV and cancer.

Speaker 1 (33:21):
But the brilliant doctor was hiding a secret.
Do not cross this line.
That was being messaged to us.
Do not cross this line.
That was being messaged to us.
