Well, with that. Yeah, this is a lot for a title.
Very dramatic title for what we got.
Very JRPG. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was, it was
a bit much of but hey, let me let me let me give the summary

and then we'll move on to the actual talking points.
All right, so a samurais path leads him to a young waitress
whose hometown was destroyed by a dragon.
He doesn't want any trouble, butit finds them anyway.
In a quick story surrounding thefabled Ryuma from the One Piece
series, a samurai that was proclaimed to have slain a

dragon long ago within their universe.
And in addition to that, this particular character is also
simultaneously featured in one of ODA's original one shot works
known as Monsters. This series predates One Piece
as we know it today and one O 3 mercies Dragon Damn Nation is
Oda's cheeky way of making thesetwo original works collide in a

short and sweet adventure. Following this young plucky
samurai, we get to see first hand the story of slaying the
dragon come alive. So yeah, we did.
We did do that. We did watch this one, this one
random episode that that tries to justify Ryuma existing as we
know his tale today by, I don't know, just just vibing,

starving, and then finding villain of the week #17 yeah,
and then killing a dragon. So when I when this was in the
docket I I was expecting it to be more than an episode's worth
of length. No, no, it's literally just 130
minute, like in and out, quick adventure, Yeah.
So I over prepared for today. How did you over prepare?

I I don't know why I tried to tell you last week.

how I felt about it because whenI first saw like the because you
know, the what the site I went on, you know, I saw that the
outline, I was like, oh, is thislike a thing with me, Hawk?

Because like, I saw Mustache manon the cover and I was like, oh,
this might be neat. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, you know, this site, this
might be neat that I heard, you know, Zorro's voice.
I was like, OK, so it's gonna, you know, maybe a little start
and then nothing. Nothing relating to that
whatsoever, really. Yes, it was.
It was all about Ryuma. Yeah, yeah.
And I was like, and then I just just vibed.

I just went, OK, this, this, this is a vibe.
Yeah, I liked it. I liked the very first sequence
where they're like panning through the town.
That was cool. I like that.
I liked the beginning a lot and I liked the end a bit.
There's a lot of crap in the middle that I'm like boy howdy
are we going from .8? I think the only thing that was

worth watching in the middle waswhen Cyrano fucking stabbed the
dad. Like cuz that.
I don't know what made that scene feel so gruesome because
it didn't show anything damn butthat that shit was good.
I did like that bitch. Oh yeah, could you imagine if
actual one piece was this fucking?
Brutal. Yeah.
Like you do literally just walked up to the dad covered in
in rubble and like you just hearthe sound effect.

But like the implication is thathe literally just like casually
forward stabbed through his skull.
I don't know what about that imagery just really like kind of
makes me wince a little bit. That was kind of brutal.
I like that. Even worse, I got the sentiment
that he just shoved the sword down his throat forcefully.

Which is even more metal. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

How'd you like it, Christian? You know, there's three people
here. You know, I had a decent time
with it. It looked pretty.
There's really not much to substantiate the existence of
this otherwise. But it I mean, it's a, it's a
fun little story. You don't.
So I, I had for 25 minutes of mytime, I, I would say it was
fine. It was worth it.
I liked seeing the little, the little snippet of this one

character that we've gotten introduced to way back in the
day and now being able to see a little bit more of him because
it was he, he clearly seemed to be a significant figure back
then. And we just didn't know anything
outside the fact that he was a samurai from this land called
Wano We didn't know about. And he was super strong and

Zorro couldn't actually beat him.
And now we've got this extra little tidbit of seeing him slay
the dragon and how he just sort of lived his life and it was his
Neat. I I had a decent time with it.
My only complaint is I wish thatthey spent a little bit more
time on the fighting. Yeah, You know, I actually, I

think that that's not that hot of a take.
I think that's a very lukewarm take because I've seen this
before. I watched this before.
We watched this this evening, you know because I I consume
most One Piece meeting as it is available to me in in dub
format. Yeah, right in the vein.
Yeah, right in the vein. And I came out of this being
like, yeah, it was like maybe itwas 6 1/2 out of 10 experience.
What? Not to say that's bad, it's just

that I think it suffers from twosmall flaws #1 it is literally
just inspired from Oda's one shot Monsters, which
unfortunately even though I do like it as a writer, monsters is
very not fleshed out. It is very archaic.
It's the formula that One Piece had back when we were in the
East Blue saga. Which I don't think that there

are parts of the E Blue saga I dislike, but when everything is
like buggy style villain of the week, you know, I I think we.
I got a lot of buggy energy fromsomeone.
There's a lot of buggy energy and these plot development in
this one, which is fine, I'm here for fun too.

But like, you know the best partabout fun is that like, I get to
routinely return to these characters and they're dumb
shenanigans. I'm only in for one quick
adventure and my time is still precious in real life is all I'm
getting at. One quick adventure is in One
Piece podcast. Well, no, that's the Stockholm

syndrome that One Piece has actually done to me.
But anyway, monsters. On the other hand, I am
fortunately not Stockholm yet anyway.
There's always time. There's always still time.
I think unfortunately it just doesn't have the secret sauce
and it also didn't wean into enough of the comedy for me to
feel like it was classic one piece either.

But anyway, I'm getting I'm getting too lost in my own
thoughts. I also agree that the fighting
which is what brought us here. I think like the money making
shot with which there were two in this was one when he iced
Cyrano, which was cool. It did the black and white.
It did like you know your your standard like now sliced his ass
back-to-back to manga that that's cool and then the dragon

am I wild? I felt like they did not have.
It was underwhelming. Yeah, they didn't do anything.
They just like had him cut the head off, which is fine, but
they didn't they didn't milk it to make any of this feel worth
it. You.
Didn't feel the. Strike.
It didn't feel like the build up, the climax that we achieved
was like, man, I'm so glad that I spent like 20 minutes of my

time building myself up to this one strike.
I'm not saying it was bad, it was fine.
It was fluid. That's cool.
You know, I'm not trying to shutdown any animators, but like the
justification in this 25 minute one shot is probably to
demonstrate how cool Ryuma is and I don't know if we did that
in a vacuum. There was only one part that

made me feel anything in particular, which was the scene
where it's just Rima and the girl in the town and he
literally draws a sword on her head as she's about to turn
around. You're going to try and stop Mr.
Mustache, huh? Hey, hold on.
Do you mock him? This is a man who wants to save
people's lives, not murder them.Come on, don't go.

I enjoyed. That, yeah.
But like, because he's like, no,I don't want you to turn around
to see what's happening behind you.

There's, there's, there's littlePeppers of like really good
visual representation in the, inthese people that's like
actually unique in it. But it, I don't know if there's
enough of it. And then that's that's where my
heart starts to break. It felt like the first episode
of a completely different anime.Yes.

is like part of the point right?Because to be fair, it is.
It's a different series. If you're unfamiliar, Monsters
goes beyond just this one guy. He just so happens to be the
samurai the the original Zorro that ODA drew up for his for his
franchise that would soon to be known as Monsters that he
basically threw in the garbage can and restarted and called it
One Piece. But he did he didn't like draw

up a few other like chapters. I don't I don't know how many
off the top of my head. But where's episode 2?
I wanna see the love story develop.
I wanna see her get magical powers.
I was just I was just curious how much of monsters still
involves for Yuma or is this mostly.
It I think this is it. OK, I think this is literally

So my memory is hazy and my knowledge on Monsters is not
nearly as expansive as One Pieceproper, but my understanding is
Monsters had like two or three independent one shot chapters.
One of them starred Luffy as we know him, with a cast of
characters that are completely different to his crew today,

with a little bit of a differentpremise.
Like Garp was there, but he was like more of a Shanks role.
It was a whole thing that that chapter exists and that.
Dog or no dog hat. No dog hat.
He even had the straw hat and everything.
Fuck terrible zero to 10. It was basically like imagine
the beginning of One Piece, but instead of Shanks being in the
picture at all, it's Garp. And Garp is a pirate and he's

the one who gave Luffy the hat is like basically the bit I hate
it. And instead of there being
marines and pirates, there's like good pirates and bad
pirates. That, that was that was the,
the, the, the, the, the pitch, Iguess.
So you could either, you could either roam the seas and be a
pirate who's searching for adventure, or you could be a
pirate trying to be an asshole. And Luffy was like, I'm going to
be a cool pirate like my grandpa.

It was a whole thing. Well, we definitely improved on
that premise. Yeah, yeah, there's definitely a
lot of improvements I'd say fromfrom that original pitch.
And then this one shot that thisis based off of just is like a
completely separate, well, not separate, it's still within the
universe. I supposedly like if ODA would
have continued to flesh this outat some point, this Shimotsky

(17:24):
Ryuma character that we saw in this would at some point join
Luffy's quest, however expansivethat quest would become later
down the line as the Zorro to Luffy's crew or whatever.
Since none of that happened, youjust kind of have like these
three individual like separate one shots with characters that
are reminiscent of characters wehave in the main franchise
today, but with completely different backgrounds.

The monsters version of USOP. He's actually holding a gun.
Oh. Shit.
There actually is a version of Monsters Usop, but, well, he
doesn't look anything like Usop,But there's a guy, there's a
gunslinger in Monsters who actually look, you know, you
remember Koza from Alabasta? Yeah.
Yeah. He kind of looks like him, but

he's a gunslinger and he's on the crew.
Oh, yeah, that's that's that's like the gunslinger they brought
into Luffy's crew back in Monsters Day.
Nami's there. She has blue hair, by the way.
I don't know why I'm giving you all this other context.
This is completely unnecessary. I mean, it's cool.
Like we, we're never going to talk about monsters again
probably. So like, might as well do it
here, right? No I do think believe it or not

later in the series they do do an anime version of this
monsters premise that I'm describing where instead of like
it's Shanks and Luffy it's like Garp and Loopy.
Loopy Luffy Loopy. It's Luffy from Team Moo.
I think, I think it's like a because you know, like One Piece

doesn't really do fillers anymore.
At one point in a few 100 episodes, I believe there will
be a time where they do animate the monsters original chapter or
something that we that we'll be able to watch I guess.
So that'll be cool. But it's an actual episode of
the show. Yeah, yeah, it's an actual
episode, but it's like a filler episode.
It's like, it's like, oh hey, you know, we did a lot of really
cool stuff. So anyway, we're going to take a

minute because we need to pump the budget back a little bit and
we're just going to remake the first episode again, boring,
make the monsters version and get in, debut it, and then we're
going to go right back to normalcontent.
Down to watch it if it's it's not egregious.
So it's the first episode of OnePiece, but with the monsters
versions of their characters. Actually this is a good

question. I don't know if that episode
plays out like the original monsters chapter plays out but
what I can tell you is there is an episode, a filler episode
where I believed it was the original monsters chapter as it
was originally drawn up and thenanimated.
Oh, I see. But I'm telling you, it plays
out like the first chapter of the of the One Piece manga does,

just with like the monsters versions of the God, which I
don't know I'd even read the monsters chapter myself.
I don't know what the original chapter, how it plays out or
whatever. I just know the little bits of
knowledge and information from the franchise or whatever.
So that would be kind of fun maybe.
Imagine being this big of a One Piece fan and not reading
monsters. Dude, yeah, OK, fine.

back to Mr. Rehuman here. So this character is the quote
UN quote Zorro that he that ODA would have made if he fleshed
out monsters, which he did not. So as an homage, I don't know.

then just gave it to this other schmuck that he named Ryuma in
One Piece. And then he was like, Oh yeah,
he killed the dragon, which is what this guy did in his
monsters. One shot.
That's that's how this all, that's where the lines come
together. And he's a king.

He's he's known as the King in the one shot.
You know what his other nicknameis in the One Piece series?

way to stretch out Rheuma's story into something that could
last. I guess the equivalency of a
filler arc, that would be sick. I'd watch more of just.
Even if it was just villain of the week style like this, that's
where he just goes from town to town, fight some stupid goon and

then kills them or does some other bad ass shit.
I'd watch. I'd watch a couple episodes of

I I almost wish we could have even had this version of this
villain but like with a few moreepisodes it all just happened so

So something that's really funnyabout this whole monsters 103

dragon damnation thing is that these characters, Cyrano and
Ryuma here. Clearly at one point ODA decided
that the best swordsman in the universe was going to be a
fucking Spanish conquistador. I don't know why, and he stuck
to that light glue because between both of these versions
of of Zorro, there is still a swordsman that is quote UN

quote. Well, I won't say better because
he's not better in the monsters version.
And we see that by the end of this, this one shot thing or
whatever, but like when you first meet him, you're like, oh,
he's better or whatever. And he's a fucking Spanish King
Quistador. And we still have that today.
This has to be a Highlander jokewith Sean Connery as the
Spaniard. I don't know.
I mean, maybe, I don't fucking know.

How old is that movie? I don't know it was like 80s
nineties and it might be cuttingit kind of close if it's 90s.
Especially if this predates One Piece manga.
It was a very popular like. Trope for a long time, you know?

Cyrano comes back and he's aboutto die.

And then he he explained or he like recites one of the letters
from memory to the woman and she's like, Oh my God, it was
you all. And he was like, yes, it was me.

funny. So the original Cyrano story the
the reason why the dude thinks he can't have the lady is
because he has like a like a grotesque nose.

like a cold open for for towns. Yeah, I feel like that's just
like a general anime thing to do.

I don't disagree but I just think there's a lot of ladies
that have that own bars in townsthat ODA introduces a lot.
Well, to be fair, I think this, I think this time, I don't know
that flair actually owns that bar, but yeah.
