Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, today's
sermon is called you Can't
Handle the Truth.
Anyone know what that's from Afew good men, right?
Jack Nicholson?
He, you know Tom Cruise is theyoung upstart lawyer.
Jack Nicholson is the grislyold, cranky veteran in the army.
(00:21):
And the lawyers he'squestioning him on the stand and
asking why these guys died.
If you haven't seen this, it'slike 35 years old, so you should
have seen it by now.
But anyway, tom Cruise yells athim I want the truth.
And Jack Nicholson responds youcan't handle the truth and I
(00:43):
love it.
It's great.
The way that we handle the truthmatters, okay.
So do you guys know Jesus lovesyou?
Good, you should know that.
All right, everyone says it allthe time Jesus loves you, jesus
loves you.
But what do you do with that?
How do you handle that?
What does that mean?
Are you free?
(01:03):
If you've listened to anythingI've said for the past 15, 16
weeks, are you free in the Lord, like you're forgiven?
I want to hear yes, I'm free,I'm amen, yes, okay, excited.
This is the good news, thegospel.
Feel free to be excited andhappy about what Jesus has done
for you.
Yes, we are free from all oursins, so we're not going to be
(01:25):
judged by your sin.
Everything you've ever donewill do.
It's all forgiven.
You are a child of God.
He loves you.
It is great.
What are you going to do withthat information, that truth,
that is true.
What are you going to do withit?
What you do with it matters, and that's what we're going to
talk about today, in kind of aroundabout way, you'll see,
(01:45):
because the chapter we'restudying we've been going
through the book of 1Corinthians and we're in chapter
8 this week, and in chapter 8,it's about things offered to
idols.
Okay, so let's begin reading inchapter 8 of 1 Corinthians Now,
concerning things offered toidols.
Let's stop right there.
What in the world is thattalking about?
We don't have temples to deitieslike they did in the world that
(02:13):
this was written to.
Okay, what does this mean?
So these temples where theywould worship these false gods,
which are actually demons?
Okay, they would offer meat tothem, and so the question is
well, let me just explain itreal quick.
So this meat would be offeredon these pagan altars, and so it
(02:35):
was dedicated to demons.
So it's like we'll call itdemon meat.
You could go to the store andbuy demon meat.
So this meat would be dividedinto three portions when you
took it to your demon church, and one third would be burnt in
honor of the demon god and onethird would be given to the
worshiper to take home and eat,and the other third was given to
(02:56):
the priest and he could dowhatever he wanted with it.
Well, if the priest didn't wantto eat his portion because he
was vegan or something demonpriest probably would be, but
just kidding he sold.
He would sell his demon meat atHEB, and when HEB would get
(03:23):
their demon meat, it would be alot cheaper than the grass-fed,
free-range meat that theyusually sold.
So you had this cheaper meatand people loved to bargain,
even back then.
Even Christians loved tobargain, okay, so now we have
these questions that arise inour mind after we're learning
about this Are demons gods?
(03:48):
No, they're not gods, okay, butthey were angels.
So does everyone know thatdemons are real?
They were angels, okay.
God created a race, you couldsay, of angels there's all kinds
of different kinds of angelsand they were made to serve God
and he had them here on theearth, like you know, and they
were kind of taking care of men,and then a third of them
(04:12):
decided to join Satan in hisrebellion against God.
So when Satan said I think Ishould be worshipped and I think
I'm a better God than God is,then a third of the angels were
like, yeah, let's rebel.
And so they became demons.
So they're still angelstechnically, but they are fallen
angels and that's what demonsare.
So are they gods?
(04:33):
Well, they would talk to peopleand they would pretend to be
gods.
So you had Baal and Ashtorethand Molech and all these ancient
gods.
You heard about them and peoplewere like sure that they were
talking to a god.
And sometimes these demonswould do things to make them
think that they were a god, werereal.
(04:55):
But we know the truth they'renot gods, they were just angels,
okay.
So the second question thatcomes to mind can we buy cheap
meat if we know it's just meat?
Well, yes, we'll see, that'sjust fine.
What if someone serves us somedemon meat at their house?
So we go over to someone'shouse, they're like, let's all
(05:16):
eat some demon meat, is thatokay?
Well, we'll find it.
What if we go to a restaurantthat's the demon meat restaurant
?
Can we eat the demon meat atthe demon meat restaurant?
Good question, and does any ofthis matter to us in 2025?
Very good offer to idols.
We know that we all haveknowledge, so just picture, paul
is kind of saying this a littlebit sarcastically.
(05:37):
What he's saying is we all knowthe truth, guys.
We all know the truth.
This really isn't maybe worthmy time, because I already know
the truth about it.
Maybe that's true.
Maybe you already know that thedemon meat is not really demon
meat, it's just meat, and you'refree to eat the demon meat.
Okay, because it's not reallydemon meat, it's just meat.
(05:58):
But it's the way you handlethat truth.
That's the point of thischapter.
It's the way you handle thattruth.
That's the point of thischapter.
Okay, because just knowingwhat's right and wrong isn't the
definition of success for achild of God.
In fact, that's still the oldcovenant.
The old covenant is is thereanything wrong with the Ten
Commandments?
(06:18):
The law?
No, it does exactly what it wasdesigned to do.
It tells you what's right andwrong, but it's not a way for
living.
It's not possible for us tokeep it, and the old covenant
was never meant to be somethingthat you lived by, because we
suck at living by it.
We are terrible at living bythe law.
(06:39):
We can't do it.
It doesn't give us life.
So all we're left with isourselves trying to keep the
rules.
So just knowing what's right andwrong doesn't make you a
Christian, even though that'swhat most Christians think makes
you a Christian.
Oh, what makes you a Christian?
Well, I believe in the TenCommandments.
People say that.
(07:00):
People say that, or let's putTen Commandments in every single
classroom and see that that'llmake everyone Christians, or
let's put 10 commandments inevery single classroom and see
that that'll make everyoneChristians.
That'll make us a Christiannation again.
But that doesn't work either.
See, just knowing the truthdoesn't?
It's not the life that Jesusgives you, it's not the love
(07:21):
that Jesus gives you.
It's important to know thetruth, but that doesn't define
what success is.
So just knowing what we shouldor shouldn't do or we can do
isn't the good news or thefreedom that we've been called
to.
So let's do a little exercise.
Let's put a name on thesituation, so maybe it hits a
little closer to home.
So we could say, like Paul, weall know the rules, we all got
(07:45):
our opinions on what's right andwrong, okay.
Like we all know that cursingis bad, we all know getting
drunk is bad.
We all know gossip is bad.
We all know looking atpornography is bad.
We all know hating people isbad.
We all know greed is bad.
We all know fornication or sexoutside of marriage is bad.
We know adultery or sex withsomeone else besides your wife
is bad.
We all know fornication or sexoutside of marriage is bad.
(08:05):
We know adultery or sex withsomeone else besides your wife
is bad.
We all know.
Fill in the blank, there's somany things that everyone would
pretty much agree yeah, it's bad.
And then we know good thingstoo.
We know it's always good tosave a buck, to be frugal, it's
always good to give generously,it's always good to work hard,
it's always good to be dedicated, it's always good to avoid this
(08:27):
or that.
So we all got these opinions.
We all have these things andthey may be true.
They may be mostly true.
They may be true sometimes andnot other times, but we have
these opinions on how we shouldlive and how other people should
live.
By the way, do you know that anopinion without 3.14 is just an
(08:50):
onion?
Think about it, write it down.
You'll get it.
Because pie yes, you take pieout.
It's just onion.
There you go.
Well done, you got it All right.
(09:10):
So just because we know thetruth, just because we know
what's right and wrong, doesn'tmean you can live or treat
people without love.
That's the point of what'sgoing on here.
Just knowing right and wrongdoesn't mean you can treat
people without love.
Because what does he say here?
He says knowledge puffs up, butlove edifies.
(09:34):
That's the principle of thischapter.
Okay, it doesn't matter if youknow all the rules and how to
apply them.
If you choose to not be loving,it doesn't matter.
Knowledge can lead to pride orarrogance.
Okay, knowledge can lead topride or arrogance.
Okay, it does lead to pride orarrogance.
When individuals rely solely ontheir intellectual
understanding.
(09:54):
They become self-centered andself-sufficient, focusing on
their own rights or freedomswithout considering the impact
on others.
So this kind of knowledge cancreate a superiority and a
division within the community, like I know what I'm supposed to
(10:16):
do and you guys are just a mess, but I'm better than you.
Love, on the other hand, prioritizes other people.
Just making people a priorityin your life, listening to them,
paying attention to them, serving them that's what matters
most, he says.
He says without love, itdoesn't matter how much you know
, because pride and self-focuswill ruin our kingdom impact or
(10:40):
our ability to serve God andbuild his kingdom here on earth.
That's what God cares about.
Okay, god cares about hiskingdom of love and redemption,
saving people in this world.
And if we're self-centered, ifwe're only focused on me, my job
, my life, what I have going on,or my freedom, what God has you
(11:01):
know, I'm just enjoying mylittle bubble then we will not
be beneficial to his kingdom.
And this is the only thing thatyou'll regret when you get to
heaven, because all your sin isgoing to be taken care of,
you're going to be forgiven, you're going to be saved, but
you will regret makingself-centered choices, every
(11:21):
self-centered choice.
You'll regret it.
You'll think in heaven whydidn't I just trust him
completely?
Why didn't I serve him with mywhole heart and life?
It says here if anyone thinks heknows anything, he knows
nothing yet, as he ought to know.
(11:41):
But if anyone loves God, thisone is known by him, as he ought
to know.
But if anyone loves God, thisone is known by him.
So he's saying it doesn'tmatter what you know, it matters
who you know, or really whoknows you.
That's pushing us, that pointsus towards relationship that we
have with God.
That's what it's all about.
(12:03):
Following the new rules andknowing what's right and wrong
never invites us into a closerrelationship with God.
There's this idea that well, ifyou know God, you'll do what he
says.
But that's not always true.
You have to know God and knowhis love.
Then that transforms yourbehavior, not just you deciding
(12:24):
well, god is worth it, god isgood, so I need to do what is
right and or not do what iswrong.
So this relationship, it'sabout who you know.
It's about being connected toGod through Jesus.
That's what produces this love, instead of just knowing what's
right and wrong.
God loved us first.
(12:45):
God connected us to him throughJesus.
So knowing someone in the Bibleis a description of intimate
relationship.
It's not just I know who DonaldTrump is.
If I was a picture of people, Iwould be able to pick out his
tan.
It's unique, right, I know whohe is, but if you were to ask
(13:10):
him, he does not know me.
At least, I don't think so,because we don't have an
intimate relationship but withour Father.
When we say we know God and Godknows us is describing an
intimate relationship.
I know my Father and he knowsme, and that's what it's all
about Us personally connectingto God through how does that
(13:33):
happen?
Through faith only.
It never happens by knowing therules or keeping the rules.
What you do matters, but that'snot how we get connected to Him
.
It wasn't your good choicesthat led you to God.
It wasn't your keeping therules that led you to God.
It was grace and love thatsaved us.
(13:55):
Right, amen, amen.
And it's the same grace andlove that is transforming us
every day, as we receive it, aswe remember it, as we focus on
it.
So knowing that truth is thebasis of humility.
It's not about what I do.
(14:16):
It's about what God did.
What you did or do doesn't movethe needle.
What God did is our whole life.
Our confidence isn't in ourworks or our wisdom or our
opinions of the rules.
We need to walk in humility andconsider others as more
(14:38):
important than ourselves.
To reveal that our lives arecontrolled and impacted by God's
love.
To reveal that our lives arecontrolled and impacted by God's
love, not just the rules.
Okay, so in 1 Peter 5.5, itsays this.
It says likewise you youngerpeople, submit yourselves to
your elders.
Yes, all of you be submissiveto one another and be clothed
(15:00):
with humility, and be clothedwith humility, for God resists
the proud but gives grace to thehumble.
So humility impacts ourrelationship not just with God
but with other people.
So it matters.
Humility matters in how youconnect with and how you
interact with all other people, and it's the only way that we
(15:25):
can really love people is whenwe consider them as being
important.
Does that mean you have tothink less of yourself, like, oh
, I'm just trash, nobody lovesme?
No, that's not true.
That's not the truth and that'snot what humility is.
Humility is not thinking lessof yourself and thinking, oh,
everyone is just better than me.
(15:45):
Humility is not thinking lessof yourself and thinking, oh,
everyone is just better than me.
It's just not thinking ofyourself at all.
Just don't think of yourself, don't worry about yourself,
trust God with you and yourbusiness, and then other people
think about them, love them, lift them up.
That's how humility, and Godsays, when he sees that, that he
pours out grace upon that loveand it becomes powerful.
(16:08):
He says, therefore, going backto our text in 1 Corinthians so,
therefore, so he just told us,if anyone thinks he knows
anything, he doesn't know, as heought to know.
So humility.
You got to have humility,therefore.
So, in light of knowledge puffsup, but love builds up, and
humility it's all about lovingothers, he says.
Concerning the eating of thingsoffered to idols, we know that
(16:30):
an idol is nothing in the worldand that there is no other God
but one, even if there wereso-called gods, whether in
heaven or on earth, as there aremany gods and many lords, yet
for us there is one God, theFather of whom are all things,
and we for him, and one, lord, jesus Christ, through whom are
(16:53):
all things and through whom welive.
Okay, so here's the truth.
He says that you do need toknow we live.
Okay, so here's the truth.
He says that you do need toknow.
Idols are pointless because theyworship a god that doesn't
exist or has no power.
Most idols, again, worshipdemons.
So demons do exist, but theyaren't gods at all.
(17:15):
They can't help people in anyway and they wouldn't want to.
They just want to destroypeople's lives.
So the entire system ofworshiping false gods is
pointless and a waste of timeand we don't have to worry about
it, he says.
But even if they were powerfulgods, he says it doesn't matter
to us because we have one who'sstronger and more loving than
(17:38):
any of them, and he, jesus, iseverything to us.
We need nothing else besideshim.
He is our source of life.
He is our whole purpose, ourwhole life.
Simply put, we live only forJesus.
So we are completely free.
Nothing else matters to us.
He is our God and more thanthat, he is our father.
(17:59):
So our love for him isn't justlike a slave to God thing.
It's like being a son to afather, and that's what's so
like.
Messed up in the world at theway that they view being a
Christian, and even a lot ofpeople in the church they think
being a Christian is about.
I have to follow the rules ofmy.
(18:21):
They call him father, but theyjust really mean tyrant slave
owner.
If I don't do these things,he's going to be angry with me.
And Paul is saying listen, weall know the truth.
The truth is he's our father.
He's never going to reject you, even if you screw up every day.
He loves you so much.
You're his beloved child andthere is grace for you.
(18:41):
That's the truth.
So where am I at?
I lost my spot, okay?
So he says back in 1Corinthians.
However, there is not ineveryone that knowledge.
For some with consciousness ofthe idol until now eat as a
(19:02):
thing offered to an idol andtheir conscience, being weak, is
defiled.
So not everyone understood thesimple truth that God is the
only God.
Back then it was very, very, very common to believe that
there were more than one God,that Jesus was just one and he
was one that a bunch of peoplewere following.
But you know, there's othergods and I got to kind of go to
the God grocery store and pickout which one I want for me and
(19:28):
they were like competing and youjust had to choose Jesus as one
of them.
So a lot of younger believersthought that if they ate this
meat that was sacrificed to anidol, they were actually
choosing that idol and Jesus wasgoing to abandon them and Jesus
was going to excommunicate themand kick them out of his family
, because that's how all thegods acted.
(19:51):
And Paul is saying listen, that's not reality, that's not
the truth.
So they were thinking if I eatto this idol, that means I'm
worshiping it.
Jesus is going to be angry withme and I haven't been loyal, so
then I'm going to go to hell.
That's what they're thinking.
He says.
But food does not commend us toGod, for neither if we eat we
(20:13):
are better, nor if we don't eatare we worse.
So again, we should all knowthe truth and understand that we
aren't in any danger at all.
Jesus has completely saved us.
Nothing can take us from hishand, even our own dumb
decisions.
And notice, he says neitherchoice makes you more spiritual
than the other.
And this is the point wheremost Christians stumble in this
(20:37):
issue of Christian liberty.
So you have things such asmovies Okay, are you going to go
see rated R movies?
No, never.
What about Passion of theChrist?
Well, that one's okay.
Okay.
What about drinking?
(20:57):
If I drink this or that, doesit make me unspiritual, unholy?
What about music?
Can I listen to anything andeverything?
What about television?
Can I watch anything?
Or everything?
I know in my mind and in mylife there are certain things
that I should not do.
I know that I'm free.
Okay, if I watch all the things, I'm not going to hell.
(21:20):
You can do it, you are free.
That is the grace of Jesus.
It was very expensive grace.
It's not cheap grace.
It cost him his very blood, buthis blood is worth so much.
He says you are 100% free, buthow do you handle that truth?
I know I'm free to watchwhatever I want, but my wife and
I have talked a lot aboutthings that we watch and don't
(21:41):
watch, and it would harm ourrelationship greatly if I chose
to watch certain things, likethings that have nudity in them.
That would harm ourrelationship.
So I choose, because of love,to lay down my freedom, because
I love my wife and I know itwould hurt her and it would
honestly mess up my own thoughts.
That's what this is all about.
(22:03):
Are you free?
Yeah, you're free, but use yourfreedom for love.
If you're using your freedomfor selfishness, that could lead
you to sin and then, evenfurther, it could harm other
people, and that's not evenbeing a reflection at all of the
love that God's given to you.
It's destroying that witness.
(22:27):
So here's what's wrong.
A lot of people will then taketheir stance and impose it on
everybody else.
I just told you my stance onone thing you have to make your
decision of how you're going tolive your life.
I'm not going to tell you whatto do at all, but I will tell
(22:49):
you what you do shows love forother people or disregard for
other people.
That's how you need to makeyour decisions, because that's
grace Loving other people.
Putting them first is humility.
That's how you need to makeyour decisions, because that's
grace Loving other people.
Putting them first is humility.
That's walking in the spirit, not here's the rules.
Don't do them, because I couldeasily just stand up here and
(23:09):
say you know what?
Here's the rule?
Don't ever do this and don'tever do that, and don't let me
see you doing this either, andthen you'll have life.
But if I do that, I'm notwalking in the gospel and the
freedom.
I'm using law to try to growyou and transform you and
protect you, and that's notgoing to work.
(23:30):
So he says beware lest somehowthis liberty of yours becomes a
stumbling block to those who areweak.
So, yes, you are free, but somepeople are weak, which means
they need the temporary supportof some guidelines to grow into
maturity in their confidence inJesus.
So we need to let love be moreimportant to us than our
(23:51):
freedoms.
Instead of mocking them fortheir silly lives and their
silly choices, we should comealongside them to show them that
they are loved and that they'revaluable and that they are free
.
But yet this is how to use ourfreedom is love.
So if you want to handle thetruth, what you do is you love
(24:13):
other people.
So it goes on.
It says for if anyone sees youhave knowledge eating in an
idol's temple, will not theconscience of him, who is weak,
be emboldened to eat thosethings offered to idols?
And because of your knowledgeshall the weak brother perish,
for whom Christ died.
But when you thus sin againstthe brethren and wound their
(24:35):
weak conscience, you sin againstChrist.
Therefore, if food makes mybrother stumble, I will never
again eat meat.
L if food makes my brotherstumble, I will never again eat
meat, lest I make my brotherstumble.
So Paul here gives the personalapplication of how to apply this
principle.
If you know the truth, we arefree because we're loved.
You need to apply that in yourinteraction to others with love.
(24:57):
You can't just know the truthand focus on yourself.
Yes, you're free, but the lovethat loved you now needs to flow
out to other people who areweak and struggling and need to
know how much God loves them.
And that's the wise way to live, is what he's saying.
So you've been loved.
That's how you started yourrelationship with God.
(25:20):
He unconditionally loved youWithout you earning love when
you were still a sinner.
Christ died for you.
That's how your relationshipwith God is based.
That's everything in yourrelationship with God how much
he loved you.
Did you earn any of that?
Did you deserve any of that?
Then don't try to get otherpeople to live as though they
have to earn it or they have todeserve it.
(25:42):
Offer them love, because whatyou do matters.
God was patient with you, so bepatient with others, because
what you do in your life matters.
Your life matters so muchBecause you are the only Bible
that some people will read.
You're the only testimony ofthe love of Christ that some
(26:03):
people will ever hear.
The way you treat them, the wayyou lift them up, the way you
value them, your life matters.
God has placed you in this year, in this state, in this town,
in these people, for you to behis love letter to them, every
(26:25):
single one of you.
That is your purpose, yourdivine purpose, your life
purpose.
Don't be a letter tellingpeople God is more concerned
with their performance thantheir life, their performance of
the law than their hearts.
Your life matters the way youtreat people.
(26:47):
You can cause your brother tostumble by focusing on yourself
instead of how your actionsaffect them, by treating them as
if they're less important, bynot coming alongside them to
teach them the way of freedom, that we are free, and instead
(27:09):
just throwing that freedom intheir face, saying, well, I'm
free to do whatever I want.
Some might say okay, I hearwhat you're saying, but I don't
care, because I don't want mylife to be restricted by
thinking about other peoplefirst because I got to get mine.
I want what's important to me.
I got to take care of myselffirst, because if I'm not taking
(27:32):
care of me, who is?
That's what I've learned inthis world.
It's a cruel world, it's a hardworld.
If I'm not taking care of me,no one else is.
And I'll tell you what's wrongwith that.
God is you don't believe inGod's love for you and that's
why you're such a bitter, angry,self-focused person to other
(27:54):
people, because you think youhave to earn your way.
You think you have to proveyourself.
You think you have to be this, become this, prove this Instead
of understanding what Jesus hasdone for you, instead of
understanding what Jesus hasdone for you.
I don't want my life to berestricted by having to think
(28:16):
about other people's first, butJesus said.
He taught us that you won'tfind life in serving yourself.
You will never find life intrying to take care of your own
needs, in trying to be all aboutyourself, in making yourself
your own priority.
Jesus said that will never leadto life.
In Matthew, chapter 16, 25,.
He said if you try to hang onto your life, if you seek your
(28:40):
life, you will lose it.
But whoever loses his life formy sake will save it.
If you give up your life for mysake, you'll save it.
It doesn't mean you have to layyour life on a train track.
It means stop worrying aboutyour priorities.
Let God bless you with life.
He's promised to do that.
That's literally what Jesussaid.
(29:02):
He said Jesus became.
He was rich, yet for your sakeshe became poor.
That through his poverty youmight become rich, in 2
Corinthians 8, 9.
That through his poverty youmight become rich in 2
Corinthians 8, 9.
And so he says his entiredesire is to transfer his
abundant living life, hisgrace-filled life, his happy
life, his joyful life.
(29:22):
He wants to transfer it and putit inside you.
That's his entire purpose.
But we shortcut it, wedisconnect ourselves from it
when we think about ourselvesfirst.
That's what we do and Jesus islike guys, I love you and just
let me show you.
(29:43):
Do you know that the love ofGod's grace has been lavished on
you?
God's grace has been lavishedon you.
Here's how you can prove whatyou believe Live your life to
love others and lift them up,instead of being self-centered
and pride and self-pleasing.
If you're filled with the truth, let your life show that you
(30:07):
handle his truth with love.
Show that you handle His truthwith love.
The truth is, his love livesthrough us.
His love lives in you.
That's what the Holy Spirit is.
Have you ever heard?
God is love.
The Holy Spirit is God.
(30:29):
So God's love is in you.
In Romans 5.5, it says that thelove of God has been poured out
into our hearts by the Spirit.
So the Holy Spirit is literallyjust doing a constant blood
transfusion into your heart, pumping into your heart a new
(30:50):
blood.
That is His love, just pumpinghis love through your veins at
every moment.
He wants you to know it, livein it, but then also let it live
through you.
So the key word for today islet, let him live through you.
Let him live through you.
In order to do that, you haveto know His love, you have to
(31:16):
believe His love, amen, amen.
That's 1 Corinthians, chapter 8.
You all now know it.
Go and live it.
