Speaker 1 (00:01):
All right, folks, we're back again and back at it.
This is a new story that thatcame up about parents who left a
loaded handgun out and a thirdgrader took it to school and it
went off in the classroom.
This is out of SpotsylvaniaCounty, Virginia.

(00:21):
I want you all to check thisout.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
County, virginia.
I want y'all to check this out.
Well, the parents of a Virginiathird grader are facing child
neglect charges after theirchild brought a handgun to
school.
According to police, the thirdgrader not only brought the
handgun inside the classroom butaccidentally discharged it
Incredibly.
Thankfully, nobody was hurt.
Officers say the student foundthe gun at home and put it in
his book bag.
The child's parents, terrenceCarroll Jr and Ciara Armstead,

(00:47):
were both taken into custody.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
There were rounds in the chamber.
It was not holstered in aholster and it was not secured
in the residence.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
In this case, because it was an accident and it's a
weird accident.
The only thing I can say is Iam extremely grateful that they
have had planning and that theyhave trained for this.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
The child who brought the gun is not being charged.
Parents are police urgingparents to secure their firearms
and keep them away fromchildren.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
All right Now to give you a little bit more context
on that particular story.
According to the SpotsylvaniaCounty Sheriff's Office, the
36-year-old Ciara Armstead and34-year-old Terrence Carroll Jr
were the parents of the thirdgrader who, on Monday's incident
at Lee Hill Elementary, werearrested and charged in the

(01:37):
evening of April 7th.
Both parents are charged withrecklessly leaving a loaded
unsecured firearm in a mannerthat endangered the life or
safety of a child under 14,which is considered a
misdemeanor, and with willfullyor neglectfully permitting the
life of a child in their custodyto be endangered, which is a
felony.

(01:58):
The parents were released on anunsecured bond of $5,000.
In addition, they have anupcoming arraignment date at the
Spotsylvania County JuvenileDomestic Court on April 11th.
These arrests come after ahandgun inside the third
grader's backpack again wasfired in the classroom
accidentally on Monday morningand this prompted the teacher of

(02:19):
the class to quickly evacuateall 26 students from the
classroom and alert the schoolresource officers.
The deputy said both parents ofthe students cooperated with
the investigation afterconsulting with Spotsylvania
County Juvenile Intake and theSpotsylvania Commonwealth's
attorney.
The child involved in theincident, as it was said, was
not being charged.

(02:40):
The investigation determinedthat the child found the
unsecured handgun in a home, putit in his book bag, as they
said.
At some point during the classhe reached into his bag to grab
an item and accidentallydischarged the firearm and, of
course, as we know, thankfully, thank God, that no student or
staff member was hurt as aresult of that.

(03:01):
And it comes to question because, you see, a lot of these
stories are popping up more andmore with the kids and it's, you
know, real.
I don't know if parents arejust like dropping the ball
these days or just not payingattention, I don't know what's
going on.
Like you can't, you know, bethat neglectful to leave a gun

(03:23):
out in your home with a kid tohave access to it.
I was talking to a resourceofficer recently who said that
they take these, you know, takethese type of stories very
seriously, because if they'renot, you know, alerted about
what's going on in the school, especially with elementary

(03:45):
schools, this can become fatal.
As he said, he's seen caseswhere you know kids would get
guns and kill their grandparentsand things like that because
they wouldn't let them watch TV,you know, or something to that
effect.
And it's real, it's real crazyhow these things are going down.
Um, I just wanted to get youropinion on it to see.
What do you think.

(04:05):
Should you know, should theselaws be stiffer for, for for
people like this as they face, should they face jail time or
just get bonds and, you know, bebonded out or whatever?
But, um, thank god, none, nobody in the class was hurt
because this could have been acompletely different story,
whereas Whereas these, you know, parents would have been charged

(04:25):
with a much harsher, harshertype of thing here.
So I just want to get youropinion on this Also.
Also, this is just something Ifound a little bit odd.
They said Barbie announced todaythat LeBron Mattel I should say
the company that makes Barbiedolls has announced that LeBron

(04:46):
James is the first athlete tohave a Ken doll.
According to Mattel, the parentcompany that owns Barbie, they
released photos, which you seethere on your thumbnail, of the

of the NBA legend activist, author and philanthropist,
lebron James.

expand the Ken-bassadors.
Ken is Barbie's longtime bestfriend and a supporter, said
Krista Berger, senior vicepresident of Barbie and global
head of dolls for Mattel.

(05:31):
We are excited to bring fans anew presentation of the Ken doll
that celebrates LeBron as arole model, his icon status,
lasting impact on culture anddedication to setting a positive
example for the next generationto reach their limitless
potential.
And James said that as a childhe was fortunate to have role

(05:52):
models who inspired him andshowed him that hard work and
dedication were important toachieving things in life.
He recognized the release ofhis Kindle as an honor.
This is what he said, and Iquote it's an opportunity to
recognize the powerful impact ofrole models who instill
confidence, inspire dreams andshow kids that they too can

(06:13):
achieve greatness.
Sticking true to James' styleand likeness, his Ken doll is an
inch taller and comes in largerpackaging than the standard Ken
doll, of course, and the Jamesdoll is dressed in a varsity
jacket, a LeBron James FamilyFoundation signature.
We are family T-shirt, nikesneakers, beats, headphones,

(06:36):
sunglasses, a fanny pack, goldwatch and his I promise band.
The doll will go on sale onapril 14th at 1201 pm and is
being sold for 75 flat for youcollectors out there who want to
put this thing on the shelf.
So I've never heard of aambassador.

(06:58):
I'm not versed on all the stuffhere.
I guess it's a new thing thatthey're going to start doing
where they take certain people.
How many people think a Jay-Zis going to get like a doll like
this?
Raise your hand, you know.
I think that you'll see morepeople like this getting dolls
and things that commemorate it,what they do and their
accomplishments, and is it agood thing?

(07:19):
Is it a bad thing?
What do you think?
You know, you guys?
Let me know in the comments onboth stories.
Let me know what you think inthe comments.
Should these parents be chargedmaximum Extended, a law type
deal, or do you think, you know, just give them a bond and let
them show up in court and Idon't think they'll do no time
or anything like that?
Personally, but that was a verysticky situation with the story

(07:41):
with the kid with the gun.
And what do you think about theLeBron James doll?
Will you be collecting this?
