We trace how a hidden lie—“I am not loved”—can take root even when life is full of love, and how God gently replaces it with truth. Through journaling, Scripture, breath, and a picture of a Father’s heart, we move from head knowledge to heart knowledge.

• naming I am statements that wound
• pairing each lie with a clear biblical truth
• using Scripture to anchor identity
• breathing practices to embody truth
• recognizing how focus distorts love
• moving truth from mind to heart
• Advent as a call to slow down
• asking God for wisdom with expectancy

“Let me end with this beautiful, simple children’s song sung by my daughter Rachel: Yes, Jesus loves me... The Bible tells me so.”

Nancy Bruscher (00:00):
I am not loved.
A lie I didn't know I evenbelieved.
It seems so silly.
Of course I'm loved.
I'm loved by my husband.
I'm loved by my kids.
I'm loved by many family andfriends.
I know I'm loved by God.
Yet, as I took the time tojournal, that's what came up.

(00:22):
This is a raw story that I'msharing, and honestly, I didn't
want to, especially not yet.
But I had an opening in mypodcast schedule, and the
thought came for me to sharethis.
I quickly dismissed it.
It was too personal, too soon.
But I was at an AdventChristian yoga event and felt
God telling me it's time becauseAdvent is all about hope,

(00:42):
peace, joy, and love.
After all, this is what I askothers to do on my podcast, and
I truly believe when we honestlyshare how God has worked in our
lives, it allows others to seehow God might be working in
their lives.
And one of the devil's greatestlies is that you're alone.
No one else feels like you do.

(01:03):
So here's the story.
I was at a women's retreat andone of the speakers asked us to
take the time to journal liesthat we believe.
They had to be I am statements.
I am not successful.
I am a failure.
I'm not cared for.
This was really hard, but wedidn't stay in the brokenness
and the failures.
We went on to see what God saysabout those things.

(01:25):
I am enough.
I am a child of God.
I am loved.
Then we looked in scripture toactually see what God says about
those lies and truths.
This was super powerful, and Irecommend you do it.
Give yourself time.
I bet you will find somethingyou didn't even know was there.
And that's why I feel so sillyeven sharing this story.

(01:46):
Why in the world would thethought of not being cared for
come up?
This is Christianity 101,right?
There are so many verses abouthow we are loved, and I know I'm
loved by God, and I'm loved byso many people in my life.
But here's how the enemy works.
You can take something that'sso core to you.
I am loved, and switch it justa little.

(02:10):
And if you allow those thoughtsin your head to keep thinking
of those people that don't carefor you, for the people that
said something they shouldn'thave, or didn't say something,
or acted in a negative way, whenyou focus on that, then your
mind does become distorted witha lie.
But I bet I'm not alone.
I bet you felt the same waytoo.
Here's the other thing Ilearned that day.

(02:30):
Sometimes it doesn't matterwhat you know in your head.
It's hard to get that into yourheart.
God seems to see thisconnection.
In Mark 12, 30, it says, Andyou shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, with allyour soul, with all your mind,
and with all your strength.
So after doing this exercise ofwriting down lines, then
writing the truth and writingdown Bible verses, I went into a

(02:53):
Christian yoga session.
Part of it was breathing in andbreathing out truth.
So I would breathe in, I am,breathe out, loved, over and
over throughout the session.
And God gave me a beautifulpicture.
I felt him say in my heart,Nancy, how would you feel if
your kids said I am not loved?
And I knew immediately it wouldbreak my heart.

(03:15):
And I would do everything in mypower to tell them and show
them and remind them that theyare loved by me, by their dad,
by God, and on and on and on.
And I got it.
I really got it.
I understood that I wasbreaking God's heart by allowing
this lie to come into my mindand allowing it to take root.
I felt such peace and knew thiswas a thought I could keep

(03:39):
coming back to.
Because that's the hard thing,right?
When we learn something new, when something shifts, it's
mostly not forever.
It's something we have tocontinue to come back to.
Or if it's not the same lie, adifferent lie.
So this advent, may you takethe time, yes, take the time in
this busy season to root out thelies the devil hopes that you

(04:01):
won't even realize are there.
But the enemy wants you to keepso busy, keep you so focused on
the beautiful traditions andthings that you love to do that
you won't sit and journal.
You won't flush out those liesand then see the truth.
You won't open your Bible andsee what God says about those
lies.
And you won't be silent, youwon't go on a walk, you won't

(04:23):
take a Christian yoga class ortalk with a trusted friend or
however you listen to God,because I know He will answer
you.
He will.
James 1:5 says, if any of youneeds wisdom, you should ask God
for it.
He will give it to you.
He does not want you tocontinue believing the lies that
you've allowed yourself tothink.
Let me end with this beautiful, simple children's song sung by

(04:46):
my daughter Rachel.

Rachel Bruscher (04:48):
Yes, Jesus loves me.
Yes, Jesus loves me.
Yes, Jesus loves me.
The Bible tells me so.
