(00:00):
Hey everybody.
This is Addison Berry, andyou're listening to the Osio
labs podcast.
The show that explores thequestion, how can we create
sustainable businesses that carefor people and make the world a
better place?
And today's episode.
It's just me.
Going solo today.
This is episode two.
(00:20):
And I wanted to talk a littlebit about.
More about the podcast.
And also about starting apodcast, it's its own special
journey.
And I've hosted podcasts in thepast, but this was the first
time I started one from scratch, sort of from an idea in my head.
And it's been a little bumpierof a road than I anticipated.
(00:44):
Nothing insurmountable we'rehere.
The podcast is out.
But I wanted to talk a littlebit about how it was getting
this podcast started.
Some unexpected twists and turnsand just a little bit more about
what my hope for this podcast inthe future is going to be.
So, I guess just to start, I, Istarted thinking about this
(01:08):
podcast.
Uh, last year back in 2022.
And it came about because I was,Lining up a number of blog posts
that I wanted to write on ourblog.
And I realized that what Ireally wanted from those blog
posts was comments andconversation.
(01:28):
And I thought.
That, maybe having a podcastwhere I can actually talk and
talk with other people, haveguests on the podcast.
And really share ideas, wasactually more what I was after.
And so that's where the, theidea for turning that into a
podcast and what the topic ofthese blog posts was and, and
(01:49):
what the topics on this podcastare going to be.
Relate to.
What does it mean to be abusiness that survives in a
capitalist world?
Yet is human and wants you know,to take care of people, to take
(02:10):
care of the planet, to beresponsible, to be sustainable.
Because classically those twothings don't go together very
well and it can be a frustratingspace.
A lot of business talk is isfrankly just not the way I want
to run my business.
(02:30):
So I wanted to createconversations around the ideas
that interest me and that has todo with things like
sustainability and makingbusinesses that serve people
instead of having people servebusiness.
I have all kinds of topics.
We started the podcast outtalking about values and we have
(02:53):
some book chats coming up wherewe, I read a book with some
other folks from my team, andthen we get on and just sort of
talk about what did we learnfrom that book?
Was it a good book?
Sort of being able to bouncethose ideas around, and then I
just have all kinds of topicsthat have to do with things
like, you know, human schedules,like.
(03:13):
There's a lot of four day workweek conversation.
We have a four-day work week atOsio labs.
But even that like seasonalrhythms what, what is this like,
structure that we're trying toput our work time into?
Things like mental healthmindfulness, uh, diversity,
equity and inclusion for sure.
A lot of big topics to dive intothere.
(03:35):
We are also an open bookscompany where we share financial
information with everybody onthe team.
And I feel like there's a lot tobe explored in terms of applying
this idea of openness andsharing in a business and making
the functioning of a business, acommunity project with the team
(03:57):
instead of a top-downexperience.
And then things likeEnvironmental impact of
businesses in the world.
Post-capitalism regenerativeeconomies, like, are there other
ways that we can have aneconomic system that doesn't
drive us to use up all theresources of the planet and the
(04:20):
people on it?
These are the kinds of things Iwant to talk about.
So, And that's just to give arough overview of sort of things
I'm thinking about.
What I was thinking when Istarted the podcast and where I
would like to go with things.
Mostly, I just want to exploreall this stuff, and I really
want to have conversations withpeople.
(04:41):
So, if you're interested in thisstuff, you should definitely
subscribe and check it out andat the same time, if you have
something you want to talkabout, I would love to have you
on the show to talk about someof these things.
Or if you have suggestions oftopics or books or something
like that that you think wouldfit within this general realm.
I am all ears cause I'm just, Ireally want to explore all of
(05:06):
the angles that we can find onthis.
So that's the rough backgroundon the podcast itself and sort
of where I'm coming from.
And in terms of this specificpodcasts, I decided a podcast
would be great.
And I have hosted podcasts inthe past, but I, I hadn't
actually started them.
So this was brand new.
I had to come up with a name.
(05:27):
And it is called the Osio labspodcast, but it was originally
called business for humans.
Because that felt like that sortof encapsulated where I was
coming from and, and what Iwanted to explore.
I wasn't sure if that was like agood name or not, but you know,
I, at a certain point I had tosettle and I was like, this is
the name I'm going to do it.
(05:48):
And I did a whole bunch oflooking to see what was out
there.
And, there wasn't a whole lot ofstuff.
There certainly weren't anyother podcasts or anything like
that, named that.
So I settled on that.
I created some branding for it.
It took me a little while to getthe first episode recorded.
It's a long story.
We did two, the second one, wedidn't like, we're going to redo
it.
There's a whole bunch of thingsgoing on there.
(06:08):
So it took me a little whilejust to get it together.
We have some other big projectsgoing on at work.
And so I finally got the firstepisode edited, ready to go.
All the branding, all the stuffset up for the, for the podcast
host.
And I published the first oneactually last month, back in
April.
(06:28):
And it turned out that somebodyelse did have a podcast with
that name.
They had started a business forhumans podcast, literally a few
weeks before I published myfirst episode.
So I hadn't seen it from thetime I checked.
And then, you know, Whatever, asix, six to eight weeks of
(06:50):
working on things to get it setup.
And then publishing it.
In that period of time someoneelse published a brand new
podcast called business forhumans.
And I noticed it because I wassearching for ours and this
other one came up and I waslike, oh, so I unpublished the
first episode and went back tothe drawing board to sort of
figure out what to do.
(07:12):
I simplified the naming ofthings by just calling it the
Osio labs podcast.
It doesn't have quite the samezing to it that I wanted, but it
works.
I know it's a name that we canuse and nobody else is going to
take because it's our businessname.
So I just went with that.
Uh, so that I could just keepmoving and get the podcast out,
which is the more importantthing to me than the name of it.
(07:35):
So.
Anyway, that's we ended updelaying getting our podcast out
by a few weeks because somebodyelse came along and took the
name.
Right under my nose.
So we lost the name, but westill have the podcast.
And actually I went and listenedto the business for humans
podcast because I was like, Hey,that's a great name.
(07:57):
I wonder what she's talkingabout.
And she's talking about many ofthe same things.
So, and this is by a woman namedJamie Gennaro and she's got
quite a few episodes out.
She puts hers out once a week,we're going to go every other
week here.
So, if you're interested inthese topics, I also honestly
(08:17):
think maybe you should check outher podcast as well.
Because she's talks about a lotof the same things and has some
interesting guests and such likethat on her podcast.
So, you know, maybe out there inthe future, maybe I can have her
on on our podcast and we cantalk about it, but we'll see how
that goes.
(08:38):
So, this is just a super shortpodcast episode.
To give you the skinny on how wegot things started and where I
think we're going and check outfirst episode, if you haven't
already, where we talk aboutvalues, which is a really fun
discussion.
And then the next episode that'scoming up.
(08:59):
In two weeks from today is goingto be a book chat with one of my
colleagues, Blake.
To talk about the book Wolfpack.
So, anyway, I hope to see youall in the future and please
subscribe and let me know whatyou think.
