Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back everyone
to Overopinionated.
We took last week off.
We're a tri-monthly podcast.
We try to do free podcasts amonth right now.
Last time we were here we weretalking about the situation in
Gaza, and after that we're goingto go into the Life of David
series.
It'll be the third part in theLife of David, where we will
(00:35):
discuss 1 Samuel, chapter 18,after the battle with Goliath.
So let's jump into our dailyreading, the Lord's Prayer.
Our Father, which art in heaven.
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom, come thy will bedone as it is in earth, as it is
in heaven.
Give us this day our dailybread and forgive us our
(00:58):
trespasses, as we forgive thosewho trespass against us, and
lead us not into temptation.
Deliver us from evil, fordivine is the kingdom, the power
, power and glory forever andever.
Amen.
Now let's go to the apostlescreed.
The apostles creed I believe ingod, the father almighty,
(01:19):
creator of heaven and earth.
I I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the powerof the Holy Spirit.
He was born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under PontiusPilate.
He was crucified, died and wasburied.
He descended into hell and onthe third day he rose again, he
ascended into heaven and isseated on the right hand of the
(01:44):
Father.
He will come to judge theliving and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the
communion of the saints andforgiveness of sins, the
resurrection of the body andlife.
Everlasting.
Amen Once again, oh, descendantto the dead.
(02:07):
Many people believe that thatmeans just as burial.
When it talks about the HolyCatholic Church, it means the
universal church which allChristians are a part of, not
the Roman Catholic Church.
So now we're going to move intothe scripture and talk about
(02:28):
King David and King Saul.
After well, he wasn't king yetDavid after his defeat, after he
defeated, forgive me, after hebeat Goliath the giant.
1 Samuel 18, verse 1 in the NewInternational Version.
(02:48):
After David had finishedtalking with Saul, jonathan
became one in spirit with Davidand he loved him as his self.
From that day, saul kept Davidwith him and did not let him
return home to his family.
Jonathan made a covenant withDavid because he loved him as
(03:10):
himself.
Jonathan took off the robe hewas wearing and gave it to David
, along with his tunic, and evenhis sword, his bow and his belt
.
I want to talk about Jonathanand David for a little bit.
It's a very clear example ofhaving a good, godly friendship,
(03:32):
and there is a friendshipbetween two men that are very
strong, that can be very strongand it's very good to have these
friendships in the holiness ofGod.
They love each other.
Now many people will say thatKing David and Jonathan had a
(03:54):
homosexual relationship.
This comes from the LGBTmovement, where they are
grasping at straws, desperatelytrying to fit in their sinful
ideology into the Bible.
That's all it is.
It's sad because David andJonathan do love each other.
Two men can love each other infriendship without it being gay.
(04:16):
The left likes to makeeverything gay and we know this.
That's not what this is.
Jonathan has a wife and we knowfrom later on that david likes
women, sometimes a little toomuch.
So, um, this is not that.
This is not sexual.
(04:37):
It is a friendship, it is a.
It is almost a uh, abrotherhood, for lack of a
better term.
It's what some people would saytoday.
He's a brother from anothermother, and that might sound
cringe coming from me, butthat's what this is.
(04:58):
That's what this is.
Let's go to verse 5.
Whatever message Saul sent tohim, david was so successful
that, saul.
Let's go to verse 5.
The Philistines, the women, came out from all of the town of
Israel to meet King Saul, withsinging and dancing, with joyful
(05:29):
songs and the trombles andlyres.
As they danced and sang, saulhas slain his thousands and
David his tens of thousands.
So this is where we see KingSaul's jealousy growing in his
heart, because it wasn't enoughfor him to kill thousands of his
(05:50):
enemies, because King Davidkilled his tens of thousands.
I'm the king.
Gosh, darn it.
How dare you praise someoneelse more than me?
Jealousy man, a jealousy in thehuman heart can kill.
He's still getting praised.
So jealousy in the human heartcan extinguish what you are
(06:12):
called to do, looking uponothers to say how are they so
much better off than me, insteadof just focusing on what you're
called to do, on your mission.
God's still using you.
And listen, the person that youbelieve is having more success
for you.
God is still using them, butwhat they're offering is nothing
(06:36):
compared to what God alreadyhas.
So what you need to say iswhatever I can do for God, may
it be for the glory of God andnot myself.
That's Saul's problem here.
That's Saul's problem here,verse 8.
Saul was very angry andrefrained discipline in him
(06:57):
greatly.
They have credited David withtens of thousands.
He fought, but with me onlythousands.
What more can he get but thekingdom?
He's afraid that David's goingto come from his kingdom.
He's afraid that David this isa paranoia that David's going to
commit a mutiny or something,or the people are going to
(07:20):
demand that David become king.
That's what King Saul is afraidof.
But we see later on, when KingDavid had the opportunity to
take King Saul's life, evenafter Saul had tried to kill him
multiple times, king Daviddidn't do it.
He just cut a piece off of hisrobe to show him that he would
never do it.
So that's not what David wants.
(07:42):
That's not what David's tryingto do accomplish, verse 9.
And from that time Saul kept aclose eye on David.
The next day an evil spirit fromGod came forcefully on Saul.
He was prophesying in his housewhile David was playing the
liar as he usually did.
Saul had a spear in his handand he hurled it, saying to him
(08:07):
I'll pin David to the wall, butDavid eluded him twice.
So let's look at this.
The evil spirit from God hasalways made me think what
exactly this was.
I think it's probablydepression, anxiety, and there's
a concept that I believebelieve in.
It's called judicial hardening, where god will harden your
(08:31):
heart.
God will actively harden yourheart because you have hardened
it, because first and god, as apunishment, will make it harder
on you for you to repent he willharden your heart, he will make
you more, he will make youShoot, more susceptible to the
(08:51):
evil of this world Because yourefuse to do what he asks.
He's letting you to become moreand more evil, which is already
inside of you, and he is notgiving you grace In restraining
that evil that you want tocommit.
I think about um pharaoh, wherepharaoh hardens his heart and
(09:12):
then god hardens his heart andthey go back and forth, which
one says what god hardens heart, pharaoh hardens heart.
And um, I think about Genesis, when Abraham lied and said that
his wife was his sister and theman was going to sleep with
Abraham's wife, but God stoppedhim because he didn't know it
(09:36):
was Abraham's wife.
I mean, god stopped him andthat is an act of God, stopping
us from being as sinful as wecan be.
So that's what God's doing.
God is stopping.
God is no longer stopping Saulfrom the wickedness of his heart
and he is hardening it on topof it.
(09:57):
And then so Saul tries to killDavid.
He throws two spears at DavidVerse 10.
The next day an evil spiritfrom God came forcefully on Saul
.
He was prophesying in the housewhile David was playing the
(10:18):
liar as he usually did.
Saul had a spear in his handand hurdled at it and said to
himself I'll pan David to thewall.
But David eluded him twiceVerse 12,.
Saul was afraid of Davidbecause the Lord was with David
but had departed from Saul.
So he sent David away from himand gave him command over a
(10:42):
thousand men.
And David led the troops intheir campaigns and everything
he did.
He had great success becausethe Lord was with him.
When Saul saw how successful hewas, he was afraid of him
because all Israel and Judealoved David, because he led them
(11:05):
in their campaign.
Saul said to David here is myolder daughter, merab.
Forgive me for mispronouncingher name, it's M-E-R-A-B.
I will give her to you inmarriage.
Only serve me bravely and fightthe battles of the Lord.
Only serve me bravely and fightthe battles of the Lord.
(11:26):
For Saul said to himself I willnot raise you a hand against
him.
Let the Philistines do that.
(11:46):
But David said to Saul who am Iand what is my family or my clan
in Israel?
That I should become the king'sson-in-law?
So he's saying who am I?
I'm just a shepherd boy.
How, uh, the king's son-in-law?
So he's saying who?
Who am I?
I'm just a shepherd boy.
How can I be your son-in-lawafter Saul tried to kill him
twice?
David is still humble, it'samazing.
So when the time came for Amareb, saul's daughter, to be given
oh man, I'm so sorry I hadn'twent over all these words, but
(12:12):
it's A-D-R-I-E-L of Marala,m-e-h-o-l-a-h, verse 20.
Now Saul's daughter I'm justgoing to skip her name was in
love with David and they toldSaul about it.
He was pleased.
I will give her to him.
(12:34):
He thought, so that she may bea snare to him and so that the
hand of the Philistines may beagainst him.
And so that the hand of thePhilistines may be against him.
So Saul said to David Now youhave a second opportunity to
become my son-in-law.
Then Saul ordered hisattendants speak to David
(12:55):
privately and say Look, the kinglikes you and his attendants
all love you and now become hisson-in-law.
They repeated these words toDavid.
But David said do you think itis a small matter to become the
king's son-in-law?
(13:15):
I'm only a poor and littleknown.
When Saul's servant told himwhat David had said, saul
replied saying to David the kingwants no other price for the
bride than a hundred Philistineforeskins to take revenge on his
enemies.
Saul's plan was to have Davidfall by the hands of the
(13:36):
Philistines.
Let's just stop there.
So Saul wants David to die andhe's sending him out in battle
of hopes of him dying um, so hedoesn't no longer have the
problem and David's job is togive him um, to give him a
hundred Philistine foreskins.
(13:57):
I?
Um just to go back.
I think maybe this is a maritalritual, um, except the murder
part.
Maybe we should bring that back.
If, if you want to marry mydaughter, you have to give me
104 skins of my enemies, um,maybe that's how I should have
went to my father-in-law when I?
(14:18):
Um told him I was gonna ask mywife to marry me.
I should should have just beenlike I'm going to ask so and so,
well, I'm going to ask Rachelto marry me.
I think it's fine if it's theirname.
So here's a bag of 104 skins.
Do with them what you will.
Maybe that's a practice we needto bring back.
Well, I just my wife says no,I'm joking, by the way, please
(14:45):
do not give your father-in-law aforeskin.
Okay, let's continue.
Verse 26 when the attendantstold David these things, he was
pleased to become the king'sson-in-law.
So before the allowed timeelapsed, david took his men with
him and went out to kill 200Philistines and brought back
(15:08):
their foreskins.
They continued out the numbersto the king so that David might
become the king's son-in-lawmight become the king's
son-in-law.
Then Saul gave him his daughterEm in marriage.
When Saul realized that theLord was with David and his
(15:29):
daughter Em loved David, saulbecame still more afraid of him
and he remained his enemy therest of his days.
That's sad.
He saw that the Lord was withhim and Saul was afraid of him
and made him his enemy for therest of his days.
That's sad.
And David went above and beyondand doubled the amount of
(15:53):
Philistine foreskins.
So he did more than what he wasexpected.
Um verse 30,.
The Philistine commanderscontinued to go out to battle
and as often as they did, davidmet with more success than the
rest of Saul's officers and hisname became well known.
(16:15):
Just reflect on that chapter Um, well known.
Just reflect on that chapter.
That's where jealousy can getyou.
Jealousy can get you lookingthe wrong way.
Guys, you don't want to do that.
Let's go to chapter.
I thought we would only be ableto do one chapter, but I think
we can probably do two.
So we're going to go to chapter19, verse 1.
(16:36):
Saul told his son, jonathan andall the attendants to kill David
.
But Jonathan had taken a greatlikeness to David and he warned
him my father, saul, is lookingfor a chance to kill you.
Be on your guard moving, gointo the hiding and stay in
there.
So their friendship was sostrong.
(16:57):
He told them about his father'splot.
That man, just a heartbreakingsituation.
Your dad wants to kill someonethat you love, one of your best
friends that has done no wrong.
You're trying to talk him outof it and he's just crazy.
It's like having a familymember Now, this is the example
(17:22):
in the Bible is a much worsecase to be in, but it's like
having a family member that is acomplete conspiracy theorist on
any topic or just a certaintopic.
That will not let it go.
That drives him crazy.
So he drives the entire familycrazy and you're begging him.
Please read verified newssources.
Please look at this, pleaselook at this.
But he's just scrolling ontiktok and looking at stuff he
(17:44):
agrees with on uh, that andfacebook, youtube, and he's
totally convinced.
That's basically whatjonathan's going through, except
his dad wants to kill david hishis dad is so paranoid.
It's's a very similar situation.
Verse 3,.
I will go out and stand with myfather in the field where you
are.
I'll speak to him about you andwill let and will tell you what
(18:08):
I found out.
Jonathan spoke well of David toSaul, his father, and said to
him let not the king do wrong tohis servant, david.
He has not wronged you and whathe has done has benefited you
greatly.
He says Then would you do wrongto an innocent man, david, by
killing him for no reason?
(18:29):
Saul listened to Jonathan andtook his oath.
Surely, as the Lord lives, david will not put you to death.
(18:49):
So Jonathan called David andtold him the whole conversation.
He brought him to Saul andDavid was with Saul and, as
before, once more war broke outand David went out and fought
the Philistines.
He struck them with such aforce that they fled before him.
(19:11):
But an evil spirit from the Lordcame on, saul, and as he was in
the house with his spear in hishand, while David was playing
the lyre by the way, I'm notcalling David a lyre, that is
the instrument he's playing,it's L-Y-R-E.
Okay, just because sometimes Ithink it might sound like I'm
(19:32):
calling him a lyre.
I'm not Verse 10.
Saul tried to pin him to thewall with his spear, but David
eluded him.
As Saul drove the spear intothe wall that night, david made
his escape.
Saul sent men to David's houseto watch him and to kill him in
the morning, but M David's wifewarned him If you don't run for
your life tonight, tomorrow youwill be killed.
(19:54):
So we have two of Saul'schildren looking out for David
because their father has wentcrazy, trying to kill David.
Crazy and in jealousy andparanoia and hardening his heart
and the judicial hardening ofGod's.
This is.
This is someplace you don'twant to be now.
(20:14):
This is something that Solomon, king Solomon, wrote.
Uh, I'm sorry, this is.
Uh, forgive me, this issomething that King's oh, darn
it.
This is something that Solomon, king Solomon, wrote.
I'm sorry, this is.
Forgive me, this is somethingthat King.
Oh, darn it.
This is something that theprophet Samuel once I get it out
.
The prophet Samuel warnedIsrael things would happen like
this, but Israel did not listen.
They said we want to be likethe rest of the world.
(20:35):
Give us a king.
Samuel tried to warn them.
This was their consequenceVerse 12,.
But Em let David down through awindow and he fled and escaped.
Then Em took an idol and laidit on the bed, covering it with
a garment and putting somegoat's hair on the head.
When Saul sent to the men tocapture David, em said he is ill
(20:57):
.
Then Saul sent to the men tocapture David.
M said he is ill.
Then Saul sent to the men backto see David and told him Bring
him up to me in his bed so thatI may kill him.
But when the men entered therewas an idol in the bed and he
heard was some goat hair?
(21:18):
Heard was some goat hair.
Saul said to him why did youdeceive me like this and send my
enemy away so that he escaped?
And told him he said to me, letme get away.
Why should I kill you?
David had fled and his messagehe sent to Samuel at Ramah and
(21:40):
told him all that Saul had doneto him.
Then he and Samuel went to Nothand stayed there.
Word came to Saul.
David is in Noth and Ramah, sohe sent the men to capture him.
But when they saw a group ofprophets prophesying, with
(22:01):
Samuel standing as their leader, the Spirit of the Lord came on
Saul's men and they alsoprophesied.
Saul was talked about and hesent more men and they
prophesied too.
Saul sent men a third time andthey prophesied too.
Saul sent men a third time andthey prophesied.
Finally, he himself left Ramahand went to the great schism at
(22:28):
Sceath.
I'm so sorry, guys, I am havinga hard time with these words,
these biblical names, places andnames of people I definitely
struggle with.
So please forgive me, thank youfor bearing with me and thank
you for hopefully you'refollowing me in your Bible.
And he asked where are Samueland David?
(22:49):
Over at Raph and Ramah.
They said so.
Saul went to Raph and Ramah, but the Spirit of God came even
on him and he walked alongprophesying.
And he came to Raph, hestripped off his garments and he
prophesied in Samuel's presenceand he laid naked all that next
(23:10):
day and all that night.
This is why people say is Saulamong the prophets?
So God stopped Saul from tryingto kill David using his spirit
to make these men prophesy.
He sent three different groupsof men all start prophesying and
(23:35):
stopped him from killing David.
And then that happens to him.
I think we can go one morechapter, and this is a Hopefully
.
There's a lot, guys, the wordsI can't say, of places and
people.
I'm just going to say the firstinitial.
Please follow me and pleaseforgive me for that.
It will make the reading moresmooth.
(23:56):
Verse Chapter 20.
First, samuel, chapter 20,verse 1.
Then David fled from Amadar andwent to Jonathan and asked what
have I done?
What is my crime?
How have I wronged you, yourfather, that he is trying to
kill me?
Never, jonathan replied.
You are not going to die.
(24:17):
Look, my father doesn't doanything great or small without
letting me know.
Why would he hide this from me?
It isn't so.
But David took an oath and saidyour father knows very well
that I have found favor in youreyes.
And he said to himself Jonathanmust not know this or he will
(24:39):
be grieved.
Yet as surely as the Lord livesand as you live, there is only
a strength between me and death.
Jonathan said to David Wheneveryou want me to do, I'll do it
for you.
So David said Look, tomorrow isnew morning feast and I am
(25:00):
supposed to dine with the king, but let me go and hide in the
field until the evening of theday after tomorrow.
If your father misses me at all, tell him.
David earnestly asked mypermission but hurried to
Bethlehem, his hometown, becausean annual sacrifice is being
made there for the whole clan.
(25:21):
If he says very well, then yourservant is safe, but if he
loses his temper, you can assurethat he is determined to harm
you.
As for you, show kindness toyour servant.
You have brought them into acovenant with you before the
(25:43):
lord.
If I am guilty, then kill meyourself.
Why hand me over to your father?
So we've seen david playing withjonathan and jonathan keeps
reassuring david.
I won't let this happen, never.
Jonathan said.
If I had leased the winklingthat my father was determined to
harm you, wouldn't I tell you.
(26:05):
David asked who will tell me ifyour father answers harshly
Come?
Jonathan said let's go out intothe field.
So they went there together.
(26:33):
Then Jonathan said to Davidintends to harm you.
May the lord deal with jonathan.
Be it ever so greatlysurveiller if I do not let you
know and I send you away inpeace.
So jonathan saying may godbasically judge me harshly if I
don't tell you what is going tohappen and jonathan stays true
(26:55):
to his word.
May the lord be with you, as hehas been with my father, but
show me unfailing kindness, likethe Lord's kindness, as long as
I live, so that I may not bekilled.
And do not ever cut off yourkindness from my family, not
even when the Lord has cut offevery one of David's enemies for
(27:17):
the face of the earth.
This is a godly friendship love.
Just like I said earlier, thisis not a homosexual love.
(27:45):
Both of these men are straightand have lives.
Um, but I know the left triesto make everything gay.
Jonathan and David are not gay.
Um, there are other passages inthe Bible of gay characters and
, um, if you'd like to readabout them, you can.
Um, I think you can find one inGenesis, chapter 11.
I'm pretty sure it's Genesis 11of Sodom and Gomorrah.
(28:07):
If you would like to refer toyour gay pride, that would be a
part of it, if you'd like to goto that as a reference.
But other than that, you don'tget Jonathan and David.
Okay, verse 18.
Then Jonathan said to Davidtomorrow is the new moon feast.
(28:27):
You will be missed because yourseat will be empty.
The day after tomorrow towardevening.
Go to the place where you hidewhen his troubles begin and wait
by the stone of E and I willshoot three arrows to the side
of it as though I were shootingat a target.
Then I will send the boy andsay Go, find the arrow.
(28:50):
If it is to him, look, thearrows are on the side of you,
bringing them here.
Then comes because surely asthe Lord lives, you are safe,
there is no danger.
But if I say to the boy, look, the arrows are beyond you, then
(29:10):
you must go because the Lord hassent you away and about the
master you and I discuss, remember the Lord is witness
between you and me forever.
So David hid in the field andwhen the new morning feast came
to day, the king sat down to eat.
He sat in his customary placeby the wall opposite of Jonathan
(29:33):
, and Abed sat next to Saul.
But David's place was empty.
Saul said nothing that day, forhe thought something must have
happened to David to make himceremonially unclean.
Surely he is unclean.
But by the next day, the secondof the month, david's place was
(29:58):
empty again.
Then Saul said to him.
Jonathan said to his son, jonathan, why hasn't the son of
Jesse came to the mill eitheryesterday or today?
Jonathan answered Davidearnestly asked me for
permission to go to Bethlehem.
He said let me go, because ourfather is observing this
(30:20):
sacrifice in the town and mybrother has ordered me to be
there.
If I have found favor in youreyes, let me get away to see my
brothers.
That is why he has not come tothe king's table.
Saul's angle.
Saul's anger flowered up atjonathan and he said to him you
are a son of a perverse andrebellious woman.
Well, isn't that the person you?
(30:42):
You made the kid with saul, butanyway, you're a son of a
perverse and rebellious woman,don Don't?
I know that you have sided withthe son of Jesse, to your own
shame and to the shame of themother who bore you.
As long as the son of Jesselives on this earth, neither you
nor your kingdom will beestablished.
(31:04):
Now send someone to bring himto me, for he must die.
Why should he be put to death?
What has he done?
Jonathan asked his father, butSaul hurled a spear at him to
kill him.
Then Jonathan knew that hisfather's intentions were to kill
David.
So Saul got so mad he tried tokill his own son.
He is a madman.
(31:25):
That man is heartbreaking.
That is heartbreaking, son, heis a mad man.
I mean it's heartbreaking.
It's heartbreaking.
Jonathan got up from the tablein fierce anger on the second
day of the feast.
He did not eat because he wasgrieved at his father's shameful
treatment of david.
In the morning jonathan sentout to the field for the
messenger of david.
(31:46):
He had a small boy with him.
He said to the boy Run and findthe arrows I shot.
As the boy ran, he shot anarrow beyond him.
When the boy came to the placewhere Jonathan's arrow had
fallen, jonathan called afterhim Isn't the arrow beyond you?
Then he shouted Go, hurryquickly, do not stop.
The boy picked up the arrow andreturned to his master.
(32:09):
The boy knew nothing about allthis, only Jonathan and David.
Then Jonathan gave his weaponto the boy and said go, carry
them back to you.
After a boy had gone, david gotup from the south side of the
stone and bowed buried downbefore Jonathan three times with
his face to the ground andkissed each other and wept
(32:31):
together, but David wept themost.
So you have these two men thatlove each other that are so
heartbroken by Jonathan's father, saul.
Even Saul tried to kill him inmass anger.
Verse 42 Jonathan said to Davidgo in peace, for you have sworn
(32:58):
friendship with each other inthe name of the Lord.
The Lord is our witness betweenyou and me and between your
descendants and my descendantsforever.
David fell and Jonathan wentback to his own town.
And we're talking about someheartbreaking verses,
heartbreaking, heartbreakingverses.
(33:19):
And just think about that.
Think about being in thatsituation of David and Jonathan,
close friends, jonathan'sfather Jealous Trying to kill
him, and the lessons we canlearn there of friendship.
And I'm going to give you, guys, the verse of the day.
(33:44):
I'm actually just pulling upthe verse of the day from the
YouVersion.
I think it's good.
His divine power has given useverything we need for a godly
life through our knowledge ofHim, who has called us by His
own glory and goodness.
So God's given us the power tolive a holy life, even in hard

Let's say a prayer and thenI'll let you on your merry way.
Dear God, let jealousy neverhurt us, calling, comparing us
to other people.
Let us never harden our heartsso much that we become cold,
that you will harden our heartas well, that we become cold,
that you will harden our heartas well.
