SPEAKER_00 (00:00):
Welcome to the
Owning Her Authority podcast,
your go-to place for womenthought leaders ready to amplify
their voice and scale theirimpact.
Here you'll gain the clarity andconfidence to fully step into
your thought leadershipexperience, activate your
vision, and confidently createthe impact you know you're
(00:20):
destined for.
We've been having so much funlearning about cycle syncing and
how to support yourself throughall phases of your cycle.
Awesome.
And here's Susie.
Hello, my dear.
Welcome, welcome.
Hi, thanks for having me.
Hello, everybody.
Thank you so much for beinghere.
So Susie, for anyone who'shopping on and they don't know
(00:41):
who you are, can you just tellus like a little bit about
yourself?
SPEAKER_01 (00:45):
Yeah, absolutely.
Absolutely.
I'm Susie.
I'm the founder of Cycle SistersApothecary.
I made this apothecary for womenlike myself.
I suffered for years from PMDD,which is just a form of severe
PMS.
So really bad mood swings.
And then my period would followand it was like really intense
(01:05):
cramps.
And I'm sure a lot of youlistening can relate to this.
And I just really wanted tocreate a solution that worked.
And that was natural.
I think I think there's a lot ofsynthetic versions out there.
There's a lot of women are inhormonal birth control and that
can cause its own set of issues.
So I really wanted to createsomething natural and
(01:26):
life-affirming that was not onlygoing to solve the PMS and the
period cramp problem, but alsoreally tackle the root cause,
which is hormonal imbalance, which affects so many other
things too, like metabolism andskin and libido.
So I created Cycle SistersApothecary with a naturopathic
doctor.
I'm an herbalist and anentrepreneur.
(01:48):
And what sets us apart is ourapothecary combines cycle
syncing, which is the practiceof aligning your lifestyle with
the four phases of the menstrualcycle with herbal medicine.
So that combination is verypowerful and effective.
And I can tell you fromexperience, it totally works.
SPEAKER_00 (02:08):
Oh, I love it so
much.
And yeah, and I've been takingit for what, like almost two
months now.
And absolutely.
I've actually noticed that myskin has started to clear up,
which is like such a wonderfulside effect.
I know I, I break out.
My boys are always like, well,it's funny because my cheeks
turn pink when I get tired.
But my son the other day waslike, mommy, your cheeks are
less pink.
And I'm like, well, I don'tknow.
(02:29):
I don't think I'm less tired.
I think my skin's clearing up.
SPEAKER_01 (02:33):
That is amazing.
I love hearing the feedback.
I've been, I've been launchedfor about two months now,
actually.
And so I'm just now starting toget all this feedback because
our products really arepreventative.
So they take about two monthsfor hormones to really balance.
So I'm finally getting theflooding in of all the
(02:54):
information, like what you justshared.
And I'm so excited to like getthe positive feedback.
So
SPEAKER_00 (02:59):
great.
I love that so much.
So Susie, what like, so you knowwe're part part of this
community is about owning herauthority and I would love to
know maybe just a little bitabout like what has that been
like for you like stepping intothis role of entrepreneur really
stepping into you know what itis that you do with your
business and the women thatyou're helping what does that
kind of felt like for youpersonally like the empowerment
(03:21):
that you get to share withothers through the work that you
do oh my god it's
SPEAKER_01 (03:26):
It's been so
amazing.
I've always wanted to be anentrepreneur and I always wanted
to do something that was reallygoing to help people and I've
always been drawn to naturalmedicine.
So for me personally, this hasbeen incredible.
With the products themselves,it's helped me step into my
authority because, you know, 85%of women experience PMS.
(03:49):
Of that, 10% are experiencingPMDD.
80% of women are experiencingperiod cramps.
Of that, 10% are experiencingsevere cramps.
And what that equates to is morethan half the month, we're
feeling like we can't own ourauthority and step into our
power as women.
And that foundational piece isso important.
So it's been so rewarding to,one, firsthand experience it and
(04:14):
be able to, I don't think Icould have started this business
if I didn't take care of thisfirst.
And now I get to share that withothers.
And living that intentional lifeand really, yeah, just like
owning your authority, being inyour power is...
Amazing.
And so, yeah, it's been reallygreat.
SPEAKER_00 (04:37):
I love that.
And well, what I love about yourapproach too, because I come
from a holistic health coachingbackground, being a yoga teacher
and just living in that worldfor so long before I became a
podcaster, I love any kind ofapproach that's proactive
instead of reactive, right?
Because so many times it's likewe have a symptom, we react to
it and we treat the symptom.
But I love what you're doing isreally treating more of the root
(04:59):
cause of the hormonalimbalances.
And I just think that that's sobeautiful and that you, that you
approach our full cycle, right?
It's not just this focus on, youknow, the week when we have
cramps or the week that we feellike I, I, when we did our
podcast episode, I said, I havea few days where I feel like a
bear, right?
Like I love this approach oflet's, yeah, like let's approve,
(05:21):
like approach the whole self.
Where did that, where did thatcome from?
Like, was that something thatyou kind of came up with or was
it with your co-collaboratorwhere you're like, wait, let's,
let's look at the full cycle.
Like, where did that come from?
SPEAKER_01 (05:33):
Yeah.
Such a good question.
It definitely was by theguidance of my co-creator for
the company.
He's a naturopathic doctor whospecializes in hormones.
And we wanted to use herbalmedicine because the earth is
amazing and it provides theseincredible plants that give us
(05:54):
medicine.
I'm so sorry.
This is hilarious right now, butmy cat is using the litter box
SPEAKER_00 (05:58):
and you can probably
hear it.
That's okay.
My son is homesick and he'swatching YouTube in the other
room and I'm like, you guysmight hear a little bit of
Minecraft happening in thebackground and that's just life.
SPEAKER_01 (06:08):
That is just life.
Thank you for understanding.
Oh, that's so funny.
The reason we decided to reallyfocus on the four phases of the
menstrual cycle really pointblank is the cycle is not just a
period.
The cycle is every day.
It's the whole month.
(06:28):
We are impacted by it all.
And when you're using herbalmedicine and these natural
modalities Most of them workwhen you take them every day.
So if you're just focusing onwhen the symptoms are striking,
they're probably not going to bevery effective.
I actually was in the camp forthe longest time where I tried
herbal medicine and I felt likeit didn't work.
(06:50):
And it's because I didn'tunderstand the herbal medicine.
I didn't understand that somemedicine takes, you have to take
it every day.
Some is more, so that's likepreventative and root cause
targeting.
And some of the medicine is moresymptom targeting.
So you're going to take it whenyou're feeling these issues.
And so we wanted to take thatwork out of the way for the
(07:14):
people trying our products.
We wanted to kind of put theright herbs with the right
phases and just have that workdone for you.
So all you can do is startfeeling better.
SPEAKER_00 (07:25):
Yeah, and it's
amazing.
(07:55):
and very permission giving in away of being like, no, it's okay
to rest right now.
Like this is part of my cyclewhere I need to rest and I'm
going to enjoy this romanticfantasy book on my couch and
just, you know, enjoy the quiet.
SPEAKER_01 (08:09):
Absolutely.
And it makes so much sense ifyou think about it.
Like we have four phasesthroughout the month.
We have menstruation, follicularovulation and luteal.
And it's like, it's living inalignment with them makes as
much sense as living inalignment with the four seasons.
Like you wouldn't go outside inthe middle of winter in a bikini
because it wouldn't be optimalor comfortable.
(08:30):
And so it's the same thing.
And it is amazing.
Like I love the permission itgives us to rest.
I really took advantage of thatthis last month.
I'm sure a lot of your listenerscan relate to the burnout of
like perfectionism and workingreally hard.
And as an entrepreneur, youknow, I could get in such a
(08:51):
tunnel vision where I forget torest and like take my own
advice.
And there's a cost to that.
So this past month during myluteal phase, I pretty much
like, I still worked, but Ichilled out for a couple of
weeks.
Like I didn't put as much on myplate and it was so rewarding
(09:12):
because then once you enter thefollicular and ovulation phase,
when your body is, primed forcreativity and energy, you can
get so much more done as opposedto just trying to do it all the
whole time.
SPEAKER_00 (09:25):
Exactly.
Because there have definitelybeen times that I felt like I'm
just like hitting a brick walland I'm like, why am I trying to
force this when this isn't theright week for this, right?
And so, yeah, I think it's openmission, right?
And I think a lot of us maybe, speaking for myself at least,
didn't necessarily grow up withfemale role models that that
felt comfortable resting, right?
(09:46):
That felt like they always hadto perform and that gets passed
on to us, right?
The perfectionism you mentioned, the people pleasing, like the
tying of our self-worth to ourproductivity.
And so being able to like syncwith your cycle gives you that
permission to be like, no, it'sokay.
Like I don't have to dosomething productive right now.
I can literally like theproductive thing I'm doing is
(10:08):
allowing my body to rest.
That's so beautiful.
UNKNOWN (10:10):
Yeah.
SPEAKER_01 (10:11):
Totally.
And even like, I feel like aswomen, like that just reminded
me, I was raised by a single momwho was just like moving around,
go, go, go all the time as well.
Never gave herself permission torest.
But also like, I'm rememberinglike the insecurities women feel
like in their bodies whenthey're on their cycles.
Like it's normal and okay to bebloated a little bit for like a
(10:34):
week of each month and like tobe like, okay with that.
And to just, So like being awareof the four phases and what
phase you're in is so good forso many reasons, but that's one
of them.
Like just to be easy on yourselfsometimes.
Yes.
SPEAKER_00 (10:49):
Yes.
We can be so hard on ourselves.
My husband and I were justtalking about this in a slightly
different vein in that we'reboth, I'm coming out of having
had long COVID.
So I'm really leaning back intolike physical activity.
I've got sleep down to ascience, but you know, I'm using
my cycle sister's apothecary.
I'm cycle syncing and I'mgetting back into movement.
And he's also like kind ofrestart a workout routine.
(11:11):
And we were talking about like, how important it is to feel good
in the body you're in right now.
And so we're like, let's go getsome workout clothes that fit
the bodies we're in right now.
Even if we don't use theseclothes for forever because,
like, maybe we lose weight or weget stronger, whatever.
Like, it's so beautiful toaccept yourself where you are
and not feel like you have tokeep forcing it, right?
(11:32):
That self-acceptance, I think,is just so beautiful.
And it's part of what you'redoing and what you're teaching
and what you're sharing.
And I just think that's soawesome.
SPEAKER_01 (11:40):
Oh, yeah.
Well, thank you.
And I think that's awesome whatyou guys are doing.
Like that's inspirational.
SPEAKER_00 (11:47):
Yeah.
Yeah.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
It's so fun.
Well, I'm so glad to have youhere, Susie.
Now we did a whole podcastepisode.
So friends, if you catch thislive and you're like, oh my
gosh, I want to learn like allthe things about cycle syncing,
about how to use like naturalremedies for my health.
Like we go deep in that episode.
Susie is like a serious font ofknowledge.
(12:08):
Like you're going to love thisepisode.
But for anybody who's tuning in,I know you have a really special
offer and I'm actually going topull it up on my screen here.
A special offer for everybodythat's tuning in.
And like you said, you justlaunched recently.
So you get to be part of thislike from the ground level.
And I think there's something sobeautiful about not only
supporting small businesses,small businesses, supporting
(12:29):
businesses that are women ownedand operated and getting to
support yourself in the processis just so beautiful, right?
So can you tell us a little bitabout what you have to offer?
SPEAKER_01 (12:40):
Yes.
So your listeners exclusivelyget 10% off my entire store with
the Live by Design 10 promocode.
I think the better deal, though,is this product right here.
I'm just going to kind of holdit up if that's okay.
Yes, absolutely.
This is the Yes, this is theHormone Reset Starter Kit.
(13:03):
So basically you get 25% off ofit, which is a$42 savings.
And it is the best way to startbecause basically it has a
two-month supply of ourfour-pack, which is our
signature flagship item.
This is something I take everyday.
So it is a four-pack.
(13:26):
It's a tincture for eachmenstrual phase.
So these are menstrualFollicular.
ovulation and luteal.
So there's a two month supply inthere.
This is something you're goingto be taking every day.
This is a preventative medicinalprotocol with herbs.
And so basically it's just goingto prevent PMS and period pain
(13:49):
by targeting the root causes tohormonal imbalance.
And then there's phase specificherbs in each.
So for example, like themenstruation one has cramp bark
in it for cramps and dandelionroot in it to reduce that
bloating.
And they each have cafe specificherbs.
And so there's a two monthsupply in that starter kit.
But what the real gift is that25% off is you get three free
(14:12):
Fast-acting symptom targetingtinctures.
I put those in there for freewith promo code a two-month,
two-five off because I know thatit takes about six to eight
weeks for that four-pack toreally start making a
difference, a noticeabledifference.
Preventative care is not goingto happen overnight, but it is
(14:33):
going to be lasting.
So in the meantime, while youstill might feel like a little
crampy or have some mood swingsor maybe trouble sleeping, and
sleep's really important forthat, hormonal imbalance.
You have this fast acting SOSperiod.
This is great for not onlyperiod cramps, but the digestive
issues we might have during ourperiod.
And remember, these are allfree, these fast acting ones.
(14:57):
This is the calm cycle.
This is my favorite one.
This is for mood swings.
So this is like when you'refeeling like the bear, as you
say,
SPEAKER_00 (15:05):
that like irritable,
anxious, sad.
When you're like, my eye isgoing to start twitching
sometimes.
Yes.
That's what I got.
Like, oh, the bear is comingout.
SPEAKER_01 (15:16):
This is anti-eye
twitch tank shirt.
And then, and then the lunarlullaby.
This is a sleep tank shirt.
This is awesome because you'renot going to wake up feeling
groggy, but you will be able tofall asleep and stay asleep.
This one's awesome.
But the first few times you takeit, you might have some vivid
dreams throwing that out there,but
SPEAKER_00 (15:36):
you want to like
explore what they are.
Yeah.
UNKNOWN (15:40):
Yeah.
Yeah.
SPEAKER_01 (15:42):
So yeah, with the
promo code TWOMONTH25OFF, you'll
get those for free.
That's a$42 value.
It's 25% off.
And it's just a really good wayto reset your hormones in two
months and start feeling betterright away.
SPEAKER_00 (15:56):
Yeah.
And I love this approach becausethe time's going to pass
anyways.
We say that on the podcast allthe time.
So why not spend it taking justa little bit of time, a little
bit of effort each day toproactively start feeling
better, start balancing thosehormones.
And I mean, gosh, I didn'treally even learn about hormones
and imbalances until I startedto have negative side effects in
(16:17):
my life, right?
And so to have something thatcan help those of us who are off
track get back on track, orthose of us who are like, I just
want to be proactive.
I want to keep feeling good, right?
It's a a beautiful way to get todo that.
I actually thought about you theother day because I was
gardening and making like anherbal tea garden.
I was like, I feel like Susiewould very much approve of this.
SPEAKER_01 (16:35):
Yes, I love it.
I mean, that's what I love aboutherbal medicine.
It's like you could supportbusinesses like mine, but you
could grow it yourself.
It really lets you own yourauthority and your agency over
your own body in a way thatpharmaceuticals really can't.
So it's really a beautifulthing.
SPEAKER_00 (16:54):
it gets you like
connected with that.
Like, like you, like you weresaying, like the seasons and the
earth.
And I don't know, I thinkthere's just something really
beautiful about taking the timeto prioritize yourself each day.
And I find like, I teach a loton keystone habits and how if
you have this one keystonehabit, it's kind of like the
biggest domino.
And then as it falls, you startto choose healthier habits
throughout your day as well.
(17:15):
And so taking your cycle sistersapothecary tincture can be like
your keystone habit, right?
You can like take it in thething for myself.
Maybe I'll eat this healthybreakfast that's protein rich or
whatever it is, right?
And you just keep making thesedecisions that are positive.
And so I love being able tolayer something like this in.
And as a busy mom with kids whoare homesick, All the time.
(17:37):
Having different things that Ican do that are so easy is just
like, it's such a no brainer,right?
I don't have to go anywhere.
There's like, I'm not getting ashot or anything.
Like I can do this at home.
And also your packaging isbeautiful.
So like keeping the bottles out, like they make me smile every
time I like see it.
Like they're in this littlesection of my kitchen that's
(17:58):
open because things have to be,I have to see them to remember
to do it.
And I'm like, these are sopretty.
I like keeping them out all thetime.
They're so gorgeous.
SPEAKER_01 (18:06):
That makes me so
happy.
That's so great.
And yeah, it's so true aboutthat, like building of habits.
What's really cool, just likeinnately about the four pack,
because it's a tincture for eachmenstrual phase is you're going
to know what phase you're in.
Like, this is one of the mostprominent feedback I keep
getting.
It's like, I like knowing whatphase I'm in, because then
(18:28):
you're gonna be able to makethat those domino decisions of
how should I eat during thisphase?
How should I rest during thisphase?
Or what opportunities can I takeon?
during this phase.
So it's really letting youconnect with your body more.
And then back to that, likepreventative piece, like the
time's going to pass anyways.
I feel like with preventativecare, like it's just a no
(18:49):
brainer because with if you'rewaiting for a symptom to happen
and then you address thesymptom, you're still feeling
the symptom.
Like it makes much more sense tojust never feel the symptom and
never feel the discomfort.
Right.
So that like preventative careis so much better.
You know, to the point where I'mhearing from women taking these
(19:11):
products, like I didn't have totake ibuprofen this month.
I was able to.
plan a trip that I didn't thinkI could go on because I knew I
would be feeling better or Ididn't experience mood swings
for the first time in 15 years, you know, like, and then just
being able to prevent that, like, what kind of doors is that
(19:32):
going to open?
What kind of opportunities forbetter relationships or better
work opportunities or just beinghappier and just feeling better
in general?
UNKNOWN (19:40):
Yeah.
SPEAKER_00 (19:41):
Yeah, it's so true.
(20:11):
right I love this approach oflike how can how can I go back
to like the heart of this andand take that proactive approach
right so that I don't feel likea bear and I like I am feeling
the effects of it and it's sofun like even my kids will be
like mommy did you take yourtincture this morning or did you
take it today you know I'm likeit's so cute like because
(20:31):
they're like this is great likeand I love that my kids now get
to see like see a parent liketaking their health and making
it a priority is like, I thinkreally beautiful because as they
get older, then like, hopefullythey will get to do the same
thing.
Oh, it's so beautiful.
So Susie, for anybody who'stuning into this and maybe they
just feel a little hesitant, they're like, I've never taken
(20:51):
in like an herbal tincturebefore.
I've never, like, I've neverexplored herbalism.
What would be like the word ofencouragement you would give to
that person that you're like, ohno, like girl, this is it.
What would you tell to her?
Yeah.
SPEAKER_01 (21:04):
I would say, well,
one, it works.
So if you're looking for asolution that actually works, it
does.
If you're taking it correctlyand if you're taking it at the
right dosage, which is the mainthing we've been trying to do
with our products.
I would also say, like, ifyou're nervous about the taste,
like, how do I use a tincture?
(21:24):
Like, there's many ways to doit.
I could show you right now ifyou'd like.
Yeah, absolutely.
Because I haven't taken mine yettoday.
SPEAKER_00 (21:30):
That's great.
And not everyone's as lucky asme and has, like, you to email
to tell, like, oh, put it inyour tea or do this or that, you
know?
So this is amazing, yes.
You can spill all the tea.
SPEAKER_01 (21:42):
Yes, although I am
always available if you want to,
like, DM me or even email me iam here to help anybody that
would like some uh encouragementor a guidance um so essentially
an herbal tincture all it isit's a bunch of dried herbs that
the medicine has been extractedwith a solvent we use vodka
(22:02):
that's what's typically used umand then it's strained and then
it's just like a liquid i'llshow you it's just like like a
liquid um and then Some peoplelike the taste.
I personally love the taste.
I think after a while, a lot ofmy friends and me that are more
seasoned with herbal medicine,we like the taste because we
know it.
(22:22):
what the results are.
Yes.
But a lot of people, it's like alittle off-putting at first.
It tastes like medicine, right?
Like remember when you were akid and you had to take like
liquid medicine?
Sometimes it could taste likethat.
So a lot of people that take myproducts, they mix it in with
their coffee, which masks thetaste.
You're not going to taste it,especially if you do like
creamer.
(22:44):
I personally just like to add itto water.
So a dose is three milliliters.
You'll see here there's on mynewer products that I just put
out.
I actually have the measurementsand that's how it's going to be
from now on.
I'll show you.
I don't know if you can see it.
Yeah.
But you take three milliliters.
You could take it three times aday or you could really all you
(23:06):
need to do is take ninemilliliters a day.
So you can take six in themorning or six at night and then
three in the morning, three atnight if you don't want to like
remember to have to take thatmiddle dose.
So this is one, two, three, Andthen I like to personally add it
to a little water, just likethat, and then that's it.
(23:30):
Love it! Yeah, but you can justgo directly to your mouth, too.
I've added some vanilla and somevegetable glycerin to my
products, so each of them arecut so they're not, like, so
intense with the vodka salt.
SPEAKER_00 (23:44):
Yeah, I actually
really like the flavor of them,
too.
Like, I'm not super experiencedin herbal medicine, but I love
the taste of, like...
Yeah.
(24:22):
I also like it in water.
I think it's just like, I mean,I always have a water bottle
with me.
So my, my thing is that when Iget, I drink my first one in the
morning and when I get down tolike the bottom, like bottom,
like quarter, then I put in mydrops and then I'm just like,
okay.
And that's like my mental way ofremembering it.
Like it's that little habithack, right.
Of like cue action reward.
(24:44):
And so my cue is like, I'm goingto be under my first water
bottle.
The action is the drops.
And then the reward is like, Igot to feel good.
UNKNOWN (24:51):
Yeah.
SPEAKER_01 (24:51):
So smart.
I love that.
That's awesome.
There's other ways to takeherbal medicine too, though.
We are eventually going to beworking on some skincare
products and some salves andthings like that.
Amazing.
Another product we have is our, this is my favorite.
This is the Moonrise Morning.
(25:11):
It's a coffee replacement.
The reason we made a coffeereplacement is caffeine coffee
can really impact PMS and periodpain because it impacts our
hormones and it also exasperatessymptoms of PMS like anxiety.
So we wanted to create somethingthat tasted good, kind of tasted
like coffee.
This tastes somewhat like, if Ihad to, like somebody recently
(25:35):
left a review and they said itkind of tastes like a dirty chai
which is so true yeah it's yummyand the reason that there's like
cinnamon in here and gingerthere's actual vanilla bean in
there like real vanilla beansand yeah and some maple syrup
granules it's all organic butthere's some rhodiola and
(25:57):
damiana in here which are bothgoing to uplift mood they
literally modulate serotonin anddopamine so you're going to feel
better more awake so it's goingto give you that energy without
the jitters and the anxiety andthe hormone disruption of
coffee.
So this is what I also add mypictures to.
But it's been a game changer forso many things.
(26:17):
Like getting off coffee, there'sall kinds of reasons why we do
it.
But if it's going to help ourcramps and period and PMS and
things like that, it's reallyhelpful as well.
SPEAKER_00 (26:28):
Yes, you're going to
make me laugh.
Like your newest convert awayfrom coffee, Susie.
Like I definitely drink morecoffee than I should.
And so I'm like, if I couldreplace an afternoon cup of
coffee with something muchhealthier, that would be so
good.
I'll have to send you
SPEAKER_01 (26:44):
some.
Oh, yeah.
And then the reason I broughtthis up is because this is not a
tincture.
This is powder.
I forgot to bring a spoon over, but you might be able to see.
You just do one tablespoon inhot water and mix.
And you can add cream and sugarif you'd like.
or have it on its own and that'sit.
You don't have to strain it oranything.
At the end, there might be alittle sediment, but some people
(27:05):
toss it.
I like to just take it becausethere's such good things in
there for everything, all kindsof like cognitive function,
circulation, blood sugarregulation, digestion.
It's all good things.
SPEAKER_00 (27:18):
I love it.
That's so much.
We're always trying to teach ourkids like what is healthy for
them in specifically vegetablesand fruit that they eat.
Cause you know, they're little.
So they're like, I just want toeat chicken nuggets all the
time.
We're like, that's great.
But also, and so we're alwaysasking our, I'll say Schmalexa.
So nobody's like start talkingin the background and we'll be
like, tell us the benefits ofbroccoli.
(27:40):
Right.
And it'll list off all thesethings.
And I feel like herbal medicineis the same way where you're
like, what are like the benefitsof X, Y, and Z?
And it's just like, it helpswith your blood.
It your blood sugar regulation.
Like, it's just like, do, do,do.
It's one thing after another.
And when you can, and like yousaid, when you do this regularly
and proactively, it's just sucha beautiful thing.
