Kate House (00:01):
Hey there, friend,
and welcome to the very first
episode of the Owning HerAuthority podcast.
So if you've been a listenerfor a long time, you know that
the show for the last five yearshas been called the Live by
Design podcast, but I have beengoing through a season of
changing and evolving andgrowing and stepping into what I
(00:21):
really feel like is my powerand my strength.
And it's time for the businessand the podcast to reflect those
changes, to reflect the who Iam today, not the woman I was
five years ago when I started mypodcasting journey, but the
woman that I've gotten to growinto in that process.
And she is a wildly differentbeast than she was five years
(00:42):
ago.
I am very excited to bestepping into this new season of
life and to bring you along forthat journey.
So this episode is going to beall about the behind the scenes,
what's been going on in my lifesince my last solo episode
many, many months ago, why therebrand of the podcast and who
this show is for because I knowthat there will be women in the
(01:02):
Live By Design podcast communitythat will absolutely resonate
with the owning her authoritymessage where this podcast is
going in the future.
So I want you to be able tohear me share about the podcast
and be like, yep, Kate isspeaking right to my heart.
And I want you to come along onthis journey with me.
So let's do this.
Thank you so much.
(01:40):
All right, friend, let's diveright into this conversation.
First of all, I just have tosay, it feels so good to be back
behind the mic after so long ofjust being sick.
And that's kind of where thestory begins.
In August of 2024, I got COVID.
(02:03):
And because of that, I ended upwith long COVID.
And in the last, how manymonths is that?
Eight months, I have been supersick.
Both my kids are in school, kindergarten and first grade,
and if you have experiencedthose years of early elementary
school, you know that your kidsare basically sick constantly,
or at least might have been.
And because of my long COVID, Ihave been super susceptible to
(02:26):
all of these colds.
So we have had everything fromneurovirus to two different
kinds of flu.
I had RSV over Christmas.
I've had bronchitis, pneumonia.
I mean, my goodness, the listgoes on.
On top of all of that, I havehad this just lingering chest
congestion and really deepfatigue.
(02:48):
And so I had to take a reallyhard look at my business, my
podcast, my coaching, how I wasshowing up in the world.
this past fall.
And I really had to do thatbecause my energy was so much
lower than it had ever beenbefore.
And I wasn't able to show upconsistently for the commitments
(03:08):
that I had made, my coachingcommitments, my podcasting
commitments.
And if there's anything thatbothers me, it's people who
don't show up when they say thatthey're going to.
Now I know I reschedule podcastepisodes because I get colds,
right?
And those are things that wehave to do.
We have to be flexible, but Iwant to be the kind of person
and the kind of coach thatpeople can count on.
And in that season, I justwasn't able to be that person.
(03:30):
And I had to make theincredibly hard decision after
three years of hosting the Liveby Design Collective, the group
coaching program for women whoreally wanted to lean into
living by design and not bydefault and to do it together,
had to make the incredibly harddecision to stop and end that
program.
Honestly, I will never forgetvoice memoing one of our
(03:50):
founding members who is now anincredibly dear friend.
And I was just like bawling asI was sharing this news about
closing the collective.
And it felt like it was thisgrieving process, this grieving
of letting go of something thatwas really important to me,
letting go of something that hadbecome really beautiful, this
community of women supportingone another, leaning into
(04:13):
personal growth, choosingthemselves again in their lives
was just so beautiful.
And to have to let go of thatwas really hard.
And I share this story becausemaybe there's something in your
life right now that you're like,I need to let go of it.
I need to focus on myself.
I need a season of wintering.
(04:34):
I need a season of nurturingmyself.
And ultimately for me, I justneeded to create some more
capacity and some more time inmy schedule to really heal
physically.
And that was really hard to letgo of emotionally, but it was
absolutely, absolutely, wordsare hard, the right decision.
So I closed the collective inDecember of 2024 after three
(04:55):
years of hosting it.
And my goodness, I love thewomen in there.
I hope to stay connected withthem forever.
I think of them on like a dailybasis, but I knew I needed this
season to kind of slow down.
So When you hear like, what isa season of wintering?
So I love this description Ifound online.
It says that winter oftensymbolizes the end of one cycle
and the beginning of another.
(05:17):
Across cultures, the season istied to themes of renewal and
transformation.
Check, check.
Even as the land lies dormant,it holds the promise of new
growth, making winter a time forrituals that honor hope and
rebirth.
And I read that to you, friend, because I really do feel like I
have gone through this seasonof rebirth.
I have taken really the last, man, like four months, four to
(05:40):
five months to really slow down.
As somebody who's always been ago-getter, like I wake up and
I'm like, let's go.
Let's get the to-do list done.
Let's do the things.
Let's make the impact.
Let's build the things.
Let's support others.
To be in a season where I hadto be like, put on the brakes,
slow down.
was really hard.
And in fact, the very lastmasterclass I taught inside of
(06:03):
the collective was on seven waysto rest that aren't sleep.
So different ways that we canlean into rest and rejuvenation.
For me, I chose creative rest.
So I'm really good at sleeping.
I like I go to bed early, I getvery good sleep, like I've
dialed in like the rest portion.
But while I was in the seasonof wintering, I wanted to lean
(06:24):
into how can I rest in otherways.
So I've been reading a lot, notjust personal growth, but a lot
of romantic fantasy.
If you know, you know.
It is a rabbit hole.
You will fall down.
It is wonderful.
Stay there forever with me.
I, during the season ofwintering, really leaned into
creative pursuits.
So I did some paintings.
I made full-size quilts forboth of my boys' beds.
(06:46):
Just all of these creativethings that I wanted to do,
painting different rooms in ourhome, creative pursuits that I
just wanted to do for theenjoyment of doing it and the
love of giving creative gifts toothers, like giving my boys
their quilts.
You know, now they wrap up andthey're like, this is my special
mommy quilt, right?
And that just feels really goodto get to do for them.
(07:07):
So that's what I really focusedon during this season of
wintering.
And during the season ofwintering, part of my creative
process was actually writing myfirst book.
As I'm recording this, it iswith my editor.
Her name is Laura.
She is amazing.
If you ever write a book andyou need an editor, Shoot me an
email, kate atmisskatehouse.com.
I would 100% recommend her.
And I wrote my book.
(07:28):
So that was another creativeway of wintering.
Like it was work.
Yes, it required dedication.
I had to keep showing upconsistently to get it written,
but it felt really good.
It felt really creative.
And it felt like thisopportunity for me to take what
I had learned over five years ofpodcasting, of coaching
hundreds and thousands of women, through my programs, through my
summits on how to set goalswith soul and how to live by
(07:51):
design and not by default.
And I was able to really takeall of that and turn it into
this book.
I'm so excited to share it withyou later this year.
But after writing the book, Irealized that I've been going
through my own personalevolution.
So Live by Design was what Ineeded five years ago when I had
a two-year-old and aone-year-old, and I was in the
(08:14):
thick of parenting in the middleof a pandemic with no family
nearby for support.
I needed something for myselfthat would keep me accountable
to my personal growth journey, that would keep me motivated,
Thank you so much.
It was what I needed five yearsago.
(08:44):
But now, five years later, Ihave grown as a podcaster.
I have grown as an author.
I've grown as a summit host, asa course creator.
I've grown as somebody whowants to bring women together
and inspire them to embrace thethings that fire them up, that
wants to encourage women to owntheir voices, to go out there
into the world and create animpact.
(09:05):
Good Lord, we are in a seasonof life right now in the world
where we need people to step upand say, this is not okay.
We need people who are willingto be not liked.
We need people who are willingto call out when injustice is
happening, when things are goingon that are just that we can't
let keep going.
(09:25):
And in order to do that, weneed to be able to own our
voice.
We need to be able toconfidently articulate ourselves
and we need to be able to lead.
And so that's really important.
What this shift is all about, Ihad this great coaching program
or this great coaching sessionwith my friend Emily Russell.
She's the host of Gather inGrowth, incredible podcast.
Go subscribe to it.
(09:45):
You will not be disappointed.
Emily not only is a podcastingcollaborator of mine, she's been
in my summits.
We've been on each other'sshows.
She's a personal friend now.
I love the internet.
What a cool way to getconnected with somebody that you
live many states away from, butyou're on a similar journey.
So you get connected, youbecome friends.
And now Emily is also And Emilyand I hopped on a call recently
(10:08):
and I told her, I was like,Emily, I'm just, I'm feeling
really stuck.
I'm feeling uninspired.
Like the content I had beensharing for five years was no
longer lighting me up.
And she was like, Kate, I thinkyou're going through this
season of.
Transformation.
You're going through thisseason of, you know, it's kind
of cliche to say, but, uh, youknow, the Phoenix rising from
(10:28):
the ashes, right?
You have to do a controlledburn to, in order to become this
new version of yourself, toreally step into and embody it.
And that is what I needed.
I needed somebody to give mepermission to say the work that
you have done is beautiful,impactful.
It will continue to stand thetest of time, but it's okay to
also move in a slightlydifferent direction.
(10:50):
It's okay to serve a slightlydifferent community of women.
It's okay to continue tochange.
And it's so funny because I'm amindset coach, but even I had a
couple mindset blocks thatEmily really helped me work
through in terms of someself-limiting beliefs on the
value that I offer and what Ican help create in the world,
(11:14):
how I can help create change, what that looks like in terms of
starting my first mastermindthis year and offering programs
on how to start a podcast tohelp elevate other voices.
I had some blocks with that.
And so I needed somebody to belike, Kate, Cut the BS.
You need to really see thevalue that you have.
(11:36):
You need to step into this nextiteration of yourself because I
was definitely, I felt like ifI continued the way that I was
going, I would have been playingsmall.
I felt like the last five yearshad been this beautiful
culmination of personal learningand growth, of honing of
expertise, but it was time forsomething different.
It was time for something more.
(11:57):
And I felt worried like I wasgoing to be leaving people
behind, people that I love andcare about.
And I felt nervous.
You know, what if I go and dothis new thing and nothing
happens?
What if I go and do this newthing and I fail, right?
And I didn't realize that someof these thoughts wereβ In the
back of my mind, keeping meplaying small.
(12:17):
And so sometimes you need EmilyRushall or you need that person
in your life, maybe I can bethat for you, friend, to tell
you that it is okay that youhave grown and you have changed
and that you get to go a newdirection.
And so really, friends, that iswhat This whole rebrand of the
podcast is about, this is whatthe whole rebrand and changing
(12:38):
of all my offers is about.
It is about empowering women toown their voice, to lead with
confidence, to become thoughtleaders, to share their message
with the world and to own theirimpact and their legacy.
Because ultimately...
That is the woman I have growninto and that is the woman I
want to continue growing into.
And so by making this shift inthe podcast within my business,
(13:00):
it allows me to really embodythat shift within myself.
So I have lived through myseason of living by design and
not by default.
And that started because, youknow, I had that wake up call 10
years ago where I wasdefaulting through life and I
needed to make a change.
I needed to live intentionally.
And then I doubled down on thatwith starting the Lit by Design
podcast when I had those littlebabies at home and I needed
(13:23):
something to really help me liveintentionally and to stay
focused, not just on raisingthese beautiful human beings,
but also to stay focused onmyself, to love myself well.
And through those five years ofgrowth, expansion has happened,
change has happened, and it'stime for this transformation.
New iteration of self.
I like to think of it as like10 years ago, I was like this
(13:45):
little seed that was like juststarting to sprout.
And then for five years, Istarted to grow the stalk of the
flower.
I grew some leaves, like thebud of the flower just started
to blossom and open.
And now I feel like I'm theseason where the flower is fully
opened.
The colors are vibrant.
The stalk is strong.
You And it's time to see whatwe can do.
(14:10):
And it's time to see what wecan do together.
have so much value, but weren'tthe right fit for me now where
(14:30):
I am in my health journey, whereI am as a human, where I am as
a coach and an empower, empower, that's a tough word of other
women.
And so that is why we areshifting from live by design.
Still love that.
There will always be such aspecial place in my heart for
living by design and not bydefault.
Absolutely.
It is still the foundation ofeverything, but that for me,
(14:52):
living by design is very, it'sabout you and and your self-care
and how you approach your dayand your life.
And now that I feel like that'sreally locked in, now I'm in a
season of owning her authority,of owning my authority, of
helping you own your authority,of helping you own your voice,
of helping you step forward withconfidence and clarity, of
(15:15):
helping you be seen and be heardand create an impact in the
world in a positive way andultimately to create a legacy
for yourself, for your kids, foryour family, for the world.
So that's where we're going,friends.
I hope you stay along for theride.
I have so many incredibleguests lined up for us and it's
going to be a really good time.
So I can't wait to see whatthis new version of myself looks
(15:36):
and feels like.
I already feel physicallybetter, but I just feel like
reignited.
Like I feel like this fireinside of me is burning.
I am excited to share it withthe world, with all of you.
I don't know exactly what it'sgoing to look like in the end,
but I am willing to learnthrough doing.
And so that is what thisrebrand is all about.
We are going to be owning herauthority and we're going to get
(15:58):
to do it together, friend.
So thank you for being here.

this new season of life, thisnew part of my journey, but
