maybe doesn't yet follow youonline, know about your story
and just the incredible workthat you do.
Can you tell us a little bitabout who you are and what

(02:10):
you're all about?

SPEAKER_01 (02:12):
My name is Susie.
I am the founder of CycleSisters.
I'm also the herbalist for it.
We are a cycle-syncing herbalapothecary, which just means
that we combine the practice ofcycle-syncing, which is aligning
your lifestyle with the fourphases of the menstrual cycle,
with the wisdom of herbalmedicine.
My journey...

(02:34):
It kind of goes back about 15years.
I've been working in the healthand wellness world, health food
restaurants, natural medicineclinics, doing all kinds of
roles.
And my mentors and theinspiration for the work I do
today were naturopathic doctorsand traditional Chinese medicine
doctors, acupuncturists.

(02:55):
But what really led me to thiswork is more personal.
I was looking for a solution toa problem I was having that I
think so many women face.
I was struggling with a lot ofsymptoms of hormonal imbalance,
but I didn't even realize theywere symptoms of hormonal
imbalance.
Basically, really bad PMS, PMDDreally, so a severe form of

(03:19):
that.
Period pain that wasdebilitating, mood swings,
weight gain, low libido, all thethings.
And I, like I said, I didn'trealize that these were symptoms
of hormone imbalance.
I was so disconnected from mybody And it was making it really
hard to be in my power and tolive my life on purpose.

(03:41):
And that led to burnout anddepression and anxiety, as it
does for so many of us.
And what was awful, too, is Iwas treating it wrong because I
didn't know the root cause.
Or like so many of us, I justaccepted it as a normal part of
being a woman.
Everything shifted for me andwhere my focus has been for the

(04:02):
last several years is trackingmy cycle to which I was able to
see patterns and those patternsthrough this amazing code that
we all have as women, which isour menstrual cycles.
I could see that this was infact hormonal imbalance.
And so with my background inholistic health and food, as

(04:23):
well as my love for nature, Ideep dived into hormone research
and herbalism.
And along with Dr.
Brendan Witte, he's anaturopathic doctor and a
hormone specialist I co-foundedCycle Sisters and through his
guidance I was able to learnthat the four menstrual cycles
are key to support for theentire prevention of hormonal

(04:47):
imbalance as well as PMS andpainful periods but all the
symptoms that come with it notjust

SPEAKER_02 (04:52):
those

SPEAKER_01 (04:54):
and yeah so we created Cycle Sisters and our
apothecary like I was saying wecombine aligning your lifestyle
with the four phases and herbalmedicine and And now I'm just on
a mission to help womenreconnect with their cycles, to
empower them to treat hormonalimbalance proactively rather
than reactively, and to do thatwith cycle syncing and herbal

(05:18):
medicine.

SPEAKER_00 (05:19):
Oh, I love that so much.
There's so much about what youjust said.
You guys can't see me.
I'm like jotting down notesfuriously because I love this
that, you know, the proactiveapproach, the reconnecting with
self, you know, we can get sodisconnected with ourselves just
trying to survive the day today.
And, you know, we forget thatlike we inhabit this wonderful
body and we get to be connectedwith it.

(05:40):
And I just I love that youtouched on, you know, getting to
the root cause and that we don'tjust have to accept that.
Oh, I'm just going to feel awfulfor these however many days
every single month.
Like that's, I'm 36 now.
Like I still, there's still awhile left of this.
Like I don't just want to acceptit.
And that's actually how Susieand I got connected.

(06:00):
We found each other throughInstagram.
I love the internet.
It's like the coolest placeever.
And I've had PMDD.
So my like PMDD story is I, Incollege, I was on the pill and I
think it actually helps with thePMDD, but you know, it comes
with its all own host of issues.
And once we, my husband and Igot married, a couple of years

(06:21):
later, we decided to start ourfamily.
And when my cycle started afterhaving both of our boys, one
right after the other, I startedfeeling like the way I described
it to my doctor, I was like, Ifeel like a bear.
Like I'm like this angry grizzlybear.
I'm like an I don't want to bethat person.
And she was like, I think youhave PMDD.

(06:41):
And it was wild to me because upuntil that point, I never even
heard of it.
And I was like, what do youmean?
I have this thing I've nevereven heard of.
And she starts explaining it tome.
And I'm like, yeah, no, thatsounds a lot like how I'm
feeling.
And what I love about what youdo, though, is you're taking
this naturopathic type approachto treating the root cause and

(07:02):
helping us I love that yourapproach is, you know, you
really think about the wholecycle, the full month, and not
just like the week when we'rebleeding, the week when we have
our period.
So I'd love for you to kind oftalk about that a little bit.
Like, what does it mean to kindof live in sync with your cycle
for anybody who like maybe isn'tyet familiar with the different

(07:23):
phases that we go through?
And how does actually likeacknowledging and tracking
those, how does that help uslike actually feel good as we
move through our days?

SPEAKER_01 (07:32):
Totally.
Great question.
Yeah.
So tracking our cycle, I think alot of us look at it like, well,
I just want to know when myperiod is so I can avoid going
on vacation that week.
Yeah.
Right.
Or as a form of birth control, which is awesome, too.
There's so much more.
It gives us clues into theoverall picture of what's going

(07:53):
on with us.
And so I I, first of all, I wantto acknowledge that tracking a
cycle could seem like just likeanother thing we have to do in
our lives.
And that can be overwhelming.
But I would argue that livinghormonally in balance, which
most women are, 85% of womensuffer from PMS.

(08:15):
And of that, 10%, I believe, aresuffering from PMDD.
So living not in alignment withour cycle and living hormonally
in balance is actually a lotmore overwhelming and time
consuming.
And so tracking really is key toliving that optimal life.
Let's kind of get into what'snormal and what's not normal,

(08:35):
like what we're looking out forwhen we're tracking our cycle.
And by doing that, what you'rereally looking for is looking at
each phase.
So there's four phases.
We got menstruation.
That's what we're all familiarwith.
That's when we're bleeding, typically days one through five.
What's normal in this phase isfeeling a little low energy and
having mild cramping.

(08:56):
What's not normal is when crampsare so debilitating that you
have to rely on painkillers orheating pads.
Hello, I was totally there.
I understand how that goes.
or feeling so exhausted that youcan't do anything.
So if you're experiencing that, you might have hormonal
imbalance.
Then in the follicular phase, estrogen is gradually rising,

(09:18):
you should feel a little moreenergetic, a little more
confident, a little more happy, have a higher libido.
If you're not experiencing thosethings, you might also have
hormonal imbalance if you'restill in that brain fog.
Population days 11 through 13,estrogen is at its peak.
So you should be feeling yourbest and definitely have a high
libido, high creativity, highconfidence.

(09:39):
So if you're experiencingbloating or moodiness or
cramping, that could be a signin that phase of hormonal
imbalance.
And then in your phase, that ishalf the month, days 14 to 28,
it is normal to feel a littlelower energy or feel a little
sadder.
But when it's so debilitatingthat it's getting in the way of
socialization and living yourbest life, that's a problem.

(10:02):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (10:32):
Absolutely.
Oh, I love this so much.
And the way you break it down isjust so digestible and
approachable.
And, you know, I went through, Idid a thing one month where I
tracked every day and I justtracked like, what does my
energy feel like?
What does like, how does my bodyfeel?
How does my mind feel?
And it was really interestingbecause as you're describing
these, like I'm thinking back towhen I did that exercise with

(10:55):
myself and it was like, I wouldstart to see like, oh yeah, like
on day six, it was hilarious.
Like I woke up and I was like,I'm going to put in a new bed in
the garden, which is likeactually a lot of physical labor
to do.
But I was like, I am woman, hearme, I can do anything today,
right?
But like a week earlier, I waslike, nope, you know?

(11:16):
And it's amazing how when youstart to track these things, you
start to see like, oh no, maybeI'm not feeling, maybe I'm not
totally, you know, feelingdepressed all the time.
Maybe this is part of this cyclewhere I'm just a little bit
lower energy, right?
And it's not that I can't just, push myself harder to do it
there's a reason I feel a littlemore tired I think that's so
powerful

SPEAKER_01 (11:35):
it is and yeah it's so empowering to know like when
now then you're going to live acycle-sinking lifestyle, all
that really is is givingyourself permission to rest when
the cycle demands it and takingadvantage of the benefits when
the cycle is giving it to you, which is awesome because I think

(11:55):
for me, I need permission.
I like when my body says it'stime to slow down and I can say,
okay, I'm in my luteal phase.
I'm not going to...
Ask that person out on a date orask for that raise right now or
try this new project or this newworkout class.
It's time to just calm the mindand take it easy.

(12:17):
And I think we all need thatlittle permission.
I

SPEAKER_00 (12:21):
know so many of us do, right?
So many of us when we...
We feel like our worth is tiedto our productivity.
So when we rest, we feelanxious, we feel guilty.
And being able to give your ownself permission to be like, no,
actually, this is what my bodyneeds.
So my mind needs my heart needs.
And I just feel so abundant.
I just feel so good.

(12:42):
Absolutely.
Yeah.
I love that.

UNKNOWN (12:46):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 (12:46):
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
And that's why I wanted to useherbal medicine in the same
regard that to support that thedifferent needs of each phase.
Yeah, tremendously for me.
I truly I don't I'm happy toreport I really don't experience
PMS or painful periods

SPEAKER_00 (13:03):
anymore.
Yeah, that's incredible.
And Susie was so sweet.
And I've been starting to takeit as well.
It's been a little over a month.
And I've even I know it takeseven longer than that to really
get fully into it, but I'malready starting to notice a
difference, which for me is hugebecause my cramps used to be so
uncomfortable, like not, not tothe point where I couldn't do

(13:23):
the things we had on our, ourplan for the day, like on a
weekend with my kids, right?
Like I was still going to go tothe park, but to the point
though, where I'm like, Heybabe, will you drive so I can
sit in the passenger seat andput on the heated seat and like
Kind of curl up into a ball fora minute, you know, and to be
able to just have that greaterease and movement and like lack

(13:44):
of pain is huge.
Huge

SPEAKER_01 (13:48):
and emotional pain.
Like, yes, for me, that was mybiggest symptom of pain.
this hormonal imbalance and itreally shined through the two
weeks leading up to my periodbut like the emotional ups and
downs and then yes the physicalpain of a period as well it's
not very fun but um and reallywhat that equates to I I think

(14:11):
we all need to understand islike if you're experiencing the
two weeks leading up to yourperiod that you're feeling down
and struggling and then having apainful period that's most of
the month so that's running soas opposed to ourselves, our
higher selves running the show, which is where cycle thinking
and herbal medicine can be sohelpful for that foundation so

(14:32):
we can live our best

SPEAKER_00 (14:33):
lives.
I love that.
And so what would you say to thewoman who's listening to this,
who's like nodding along andshe's like, yeah, no, Susie, I
feel yucky.
Like for like when I'm ovulatingand my little phase and my
menstrual phase, like she onlygets that like five day window,
the follicular phase where she'slike, I actually feel okay for
five days out of the month.
That's bonkers when we thinkabout that.

(14:53):
What do you say to the woman whojust feels so demoralized?
She's like, nope, it's alwaysbeen like this.
It will always be this way.
I've never known anythingdifferent.
What would you say to her toencourage her to try an herbal
remedy and try this approach, which I think is really unique
in terms of In terms of likegiving ourselves goodness

(15:16):
through your tinctures all monthlong and not just for like five
or six days.
Absolutely.
I would say there

SPEAKER_01 (15:24):
is hope.
And I would also say if you'vetried herbs before and you felt
like they didn't work, it'sprobably because you didn't take
it every day of the cycle.
A lot of herbal medicine worksbest when you're taking it every
day.
It's one of those things thatbuilds up over time in the
system and it's supporting likesystems of the body, such as the

(15:46):
endocrine system or the liver orthe nervous system.
And these things are going tohappen overnight.
So to stick with it and it doeswork.
I would also say it's veryempowering and anyone can start
this today to live a cyclesyncing lifestyle.
I believe pairing it with herbalmedicine is the secret sauce and

(16:07):
it works amazing, but anyone cancycle sync today and start right
now.
And really all that comes downto is living a cycle syncing
lifestyle.
Like I was saying, takingadvantage of the good parts of
your cycle, so that follicularovulation time, and then giving
yourself permission to slow downduring menstruation and luteal.
It also means avoiding certainthings throughout the month.

(16:29):
Things like endocrine disruptingchemicals, which I think some of
us are becoming more familiarwith, but these are things like
parabens and phthalates, andthey can be in beauty products
and cleaning supplies.
Avoiding processed foods,avoiding plastics, avoiding
alcohol smoking and excesscaffeine.
And of course, as we all know, these are things best to avoid

(16:49):
for all kinds of things, notjust because it's like annoying
or hard or difficult to avoidcertain things.
One of our missions with cyclesisters is to provide
alternatives that are actuallylife affirming.
So for example, what I'mdrinking right now is our coffee
replacement.
Instead of disrupting hormones,it's actually hormone supporting

(17:11):
and And then besides that, andwhen I get into this cycle
syncing protocol, I'm going tobe referring to our flagship
product quite a bit, which isour full cycle tincture four
pack.
This is a one month supply.
This is what you've been taking.
Make sure for each menstrualphase.
So each tincture supports theunique needs of each phase.

(17:34):
And they all work together withsome of those same herbs in each
one that are going to supportthose systems like I was talking
about for the endocrine system, the liver, and the nervous
system.
And that's really going toprevent PMS and painful periods.
So if you're wanting to live acycle-syncing lifestyle, besides
those things to avoid, like Ijust mentioned, in the

(17:56):
menstruation phase.
Give yourself permission to restand restore.
I say sleep 10 hours if you can.
Obviously, that's not easy forall of us in our busy lives, but
sleep as much as you can.
Try not to take on too much.
It's okay.
Eat iron-rich foods likegrass-fed red meat or organic
lentils.

(18:17):
And then next is follicular.
And this phase is my favorite.
We've This is when you startedyour garden bed.
This is when, yeah, you shouldtake advantage of how great
you're feeling.
So you can maybe ask for a raiseor try something new.
Next is ovulation.

(18:39):
Again, you're also probablyfeeling amazing.
Take advantage of it.
Like I was saying, you can asksomebody out or try a new
workout class.
And then lastly is luteal.
And this is half the month.
And this is days 14 to 28.
It is normal for energy to bedropping because estrogen and
serotonin are both droppinghere.
So give yourself permission, again, to take it easy, not take

(19:02):
on too much.
And in each of these phases, you'll be taking the tinctures
associated from the full cycletincture four-pack.
So for menstruation, you takethe menstruation.
Tincture, follicular, thattincture, ovulation, and so on.

SPEAKER_00 (19:13):
Amazing.
Oh, I love that so much.
I just, I feel so powerful tothink about, like, to just
reframe the conversation aroundour cycles, I think is the best
way to put it, right?
To take it from being this thingthat it's like, oh, no, my
period is coming, right?
And to making it like, okay, no,this is like, I am a...
I am living in this body andthis body has cycles and it is

(19:35):
normal for me to feel one wayduring one and another way
during another.
But I can help myself feel mybest in each part of this cycle
by doing this thing proactively.
And I love how you talk aboutboth proactive and how it's how
with the herbal medicines, it's.
Over time.
Right.
I think so often we're in thislike immediate gratification

(19:56):
world where it's like, well, Iwant to take the medicine and
feel amazing in five minutes.
Right.
Like that's not how life works.
Right.
And so taking these things that, you know, take some time to
allow them to build up in oursystem.
So allow them to support us.
It feels very sustainable.
And I think that's what I reallylove about what you do, too, is
it's so like you've used thewords life affirming.
I just think that's sobeautiful.

(20:17):
What is life affirming?
Like if you had to describe itlike.
How would you define lifeaffirming?

SPEAKER_01 (20:25):
I think that which what gives us vitality and makes
us feel like ourselves.

SPEAKER_00 (20:31):
Yeah.

UNKNOWN (20:32):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (20:32):
I love that so much.
That's so beautiful.

(20:56):
How are they feeling before theystarted, and how do they start
to feel within two to threemonths of starting this kind of
routine and this daily self-carepractice?
Totally.
I

SPEAKER_01 (21:07):
think at first, I'm hearing a lot of women say
that...
That week, especially leading upto their period, they were
feeling super depressed andanxious and felt like they
couldn't accomplish tasks thatthey wanted to.
And then when they would havetheir period, it's debilitating
heating pads and like eightibuprofen throughout the day.

(21:29):
And because of that, they feltlike what I've heard a lot is
like they couldn't socialize alot, a lot of isolation, a lot
of not believing in themselvesor wanting to take on new
projects.
Whereas now what I'm finding isthis new sense of confidence I'm

(21:51):
hearing a lot of.
I'm hearing a lot of women talkabout getting their libido back,
which isn't just about sexdrive, although it is, but it's
also about just energy andvitality and feeling connected.
So a lot women's relationshipsare improving, especially
without all the mood swings, like just coming from a calmer

(22:14):
sense,

SPEAKER_00 (22:15):
feeling more confident in work.
I love that so much.
And you know, in terms of thispodcast, this idea of owning her
authority, it feels like if wecan really focus on our physical
health and wellness, like all ofour listeners know, I've been on
a health journey the last likeeight months of getting over a
long COVID and just getting backto like a baseline of health
that I'm like, okay, this feelsgood.

(22:37):
Like it's very exciting.
And it feels like if we want toown our authority, we want to
step out into the world andcreate impact and change and
lead with a confidence voice, ifour body hurts so much of the
month, if our emotional selfhurts, if our mind is hurting,
it's so hard to do that work.

(22:58):
What connection do you seebetween caring for yourself well
and being able to use your voiceand own your authority?
What does that mean to you?

SPEAKER_01 (23:08):
That's such a good question.
It's really that foundationalpiece.
I always say that Hormonesquestion the idea of free will
to me because they're out ofwhack, they are running the show
and you feel out of control.
So to really have that balanceIt just allows you to be in the

(23:33):
driver's seat.
And I really do believe thatwe're all here to be our 100%
authentic self.
I don't see why else our soulwould have incarnated here.
And so not to get all spiritual, but it's true.
And so if your foundation issolid, you can carry out
whatever mission you have.
Our bodies and our mindsshouldn't be something we're

(23:56):
dragging along, not feelingwell, they should be the vessel
to help

SPEAKER_00 (24:00):
us carry out our mission.
Oh, I love that so much.
Yes, I think there's just somuch good we can do in the world
for ourselves, for our families, for others.
And if we don't have thatvitality, Everything is so much
harder.
I love this so much.
So what would Susie be like yourlast piece of encouragement for
the person who's listening?
And she's like, okay, Susie, I'minterested.

(24:21):
You've got me curious aboutcycle syncing.
Like maybe she tracks her cycle, but she only tracks her period,
not necessarily all four phases.
Where should somebody start withthis process?
Like somebody who's like, okay,I feel seen, I feel heard, but
where do I start?
What would be yourrecommendation for that person?
Totally.

(24:42):
Start journaling.

SPEAKER_01 (24:43):
Journal things like mood, cravings, your sleep
patterns, your relationships, how you're feeling about
friends, partners, family, yourmotivation, your cognitive
functioning, things like that.
Not necessarily your weight, butlike if you're noticing you gain

(25:05):
weight at a certain time, trackthat and track

SPEAKER_00 (25:09):
bloating and digestion as well.
Cool.
And do you have a favorite appthat you recommend people go to?
Do you suggest like just grabone of the 40 unused journals in
your office like I have behindme?
What do you suggest?
I like pen to paper.
Me

SPEAKER_01 (25:26):
too.
But also what you could do isget like a daily planner.
That way you can see like theactual dates and kind of then
you can really

SPEAKER_00 (25:38):
see the pattern because it's in a calendar.
But there's something wonderfulabout being able to look back at
past months and seeing yourcycles, really, things that
happen over and over again.
You're like, oh, right, on thisday, even with my PMDD, I'm
still coming out of that.
And so I still have one day amonth where I'm like a little

(25:58):
bit of that bear cycle.
But it's so nice to be like, oh,no, I'm not crazy today.
Like and it's not that the wholeworld sucks.
It's just that it's this one daywhere things are a little bit
harder.
And like that used to be threedays and now it's one day.
So that's like we're moving theright direction.
But having that information isknowledge.

(26:18):
Like it's so true.

SPEAKER_01 (26:19):
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
Because not being aware of it.
we start labeling ourselves asthings we are not like crazy or
unlovable or these are not true.
It's, it's just, yeah, thecycle.
And also I would say too, foranyone listening, that's like,
I'm just a monster.

(26:40):
I love a bear.
I'm going to totally adopt that.
But yeah, To understand that welive in a pretty highly toxic
world.
So hormonal imbalance is muchmore common today than maybe it
was 50 years ago.
So to be easy on yourself andjust to be aware of that and to

(27:00):
also be empowered by that, wecan make consumer choices to not
have those chemicals as presentin our life or plastics in our
life.

SPEAKER_00 (27:09):
I love that.
I went down the rabbit holerecently of learning how to
reduce our plastic consumption.
So you know, my kids, we allhave like our bamboo
toothbrushes now.
And it's just like, yeah, right, those little shifts that you can
do.
And just like anything is,especially when it comes to
plastics, I find like you can,you can go like what, like swing
the pendulum swings away fromone side to the other.

(27:30):
But like anything, and like whatwe've been talking about today,
it's just about these littlechanges over time.
consistently executed where wecan really start to see those
shifts and even getting moreintentional with the cleaning
products that we use and allthat kind of stuff.
That's been part of this journeyof me getting healthy in the
last year.
I was realizing there's probablysome stuff around me that's not

(27:51):
helping, right?
And how can we just be moreproactive and intentional, which
is so much of what I hear Inwhat you do.
So Susie, for somebody who'slistening and they're like,
okay, I'm in like, get me sometinctures.
How do we do this?
Can you tell them where tostart, where to go, what they,
what they should get, like allthe details.
Absolutely.

SPEAKER_01 (28:13):
So I had mentioned earlier that full cycle tincture
four pack, this is this greatfoundational piece that's going
to prevent PMS, painful periods, but it does take about six to
eight weeks for your endocrinesystem to catch up and balance.
This is very common with rootcause care, it does take time.
I realized this, so I created ahormone reset starter kit.

(28:37):
So it has two months of thatfour pack, but it Also has a
free gift to you.
So it's three free tincturesthat are fast acting to support
you in that two month period.
One helps fast acting for periodcramps and other period
discomforts like digestiveissues, for example, or

(28:58):
bloating.
Another one, my personalfavorite is the calm cycle.
It helps with anxiety andirritability and mood swings.
And it's super fast acting likefive minutes.
That's

SPEAKER_00 (29:09):
amazing.
That's what I do when I'm abear.
I will be

SPEAKER_01 (29:12):
taking that.
Yeah, it's great.
And then the last is our, it'scalled Lunar Lullaby.
It's our sleep tincture.
There is magnesium in it.
So it also helps when you may behaving cramps or to help balance
your hormones while you'resleeping.
And it's amazing.
It helps you fall asleep quick, stay asleep and wake up feeling
rested.

(29:32):
Those are free because I reallydo want to support women in
those two months to get them forfree.
Just go toCycleSistersApothecary.com.
Go to our shop.
You'll see the Hormone ResetStarter Kit.
And there is a promo code inthere to get those off.
So it's actually a$42 savings.
So it's It's a pretty good deal.

SPEAKER_00 (29:59):
That's amazing.
Oh, my goodness.
It's that commitment to yourfuture self.
It's like, you know, the time isgoing to pass anyways.
So I might as well startinvesting in my health and

(30:21):
feeling better in a month ortwo.
Like what a beautiful gift togive yourself.
So yes, go over to the website, get connected.
And Susanna, you're active overon Instagram as well.
Where is the best place forpeople to connect with you
there?
Yeah, it's cycle underscoresisters underscore apothecary on
Instagram.
Amazing.
Oh, my goodness.
Okay, so as we wrap up, Susie,my last question for you is,

(30:44):
what does it mean to youpersonally to own your
authority?
What does that look or feel liketo you?
Oh,

SPEAKER_01 (30:51):
I love this.
I mean, I guess it means kind ofwhat I was talking about
earlier, being 100% myself.
and doing what needs to be doneto nurture the self to carry out
my mission and to live anintentional life.

SPEAKER_00 (31:12):
Yes.
Oh, that's so beautiful.
I'm so grateful that we gotconnected.
I love when like the stars alignor whatever it is.

places and just make thesebeautiful connections.

other women to take someownership of your experience of
life, right?

It's our cycle.
And so really getting to loveyourself through that process.
