L’île de Pâques est l’une des plus isolées du monde : il n’y a rien à trois mille kilomètres à la ronde. D’origine volcanique, elle mesure 170 km². Son nom est associé à de monumentales têtes de pierre dressées appelées moaïs. Qui les a sculptées ? Que représentent-elles ? Quelle technologie a permis leur transport en des temps reculés ? Par ailleurs, une très grande partie de ces statues a été renversée : pourquoi ? Ont-elles été profanées ? On s’interroge aussi sur la disparition de toute végétation sur cette île décrite comme jadis luxuriante : que sont devenus tous ses arbres ? Et ses habitants, les Rapanuis qui n’étaient plus que 111 en 1877 : que leur est-il arrivé ?
